The caissons are 5 m to 8 m in diameter and 40 m to 100 m deep, excavated either by hand or mechanised excavators or by drilling and blasting. Performance of the 50 storey DBS Building is described.

Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) has re-emerged as a major concern in the Australian coal mining industry. Harmful effects from coal dust inhalation have been well documented, but the underlying causes and mechanisms of CWP are still debatable. Research conducted in the USA has proposed a plausible link between the presence of pyrite in coal and the prevalence of CWP. Reactive pyrite in coal oxidises under ambient mine conditions to produce various iron sulfate minerals such as melanterite, rozenite, roemerite and szomolnokite. Rapid reaction rates are promoted by the form (size and morphology) of the reactive pyrite present, which provides both increased surface area and increased porosity for easy air access to reaction sites. The products formed from reactive pyrite oxidation are often needle-like crystals with thicknesses in the order of 1–2 µm (eg melanterite and rozenite) and prismatic crystals with thicknesses less than 5 µm (eg roemerite) have been recorded. The densities of these minerals are significantly less than quartz, which makes them prone to becoming airborne with the normal coal dust. In fact, the mix of these mineral salts is commonly referred to as ‘fairy dust’ by mine workers due to the way they can become entrained and sparkle in the mine ventilation air, particularly if they occur in the upper part of a seam that is forming a coal roof. Examples are presented of the various products of reactive pyrite oxidation found in three Australian coal samples, which provide evidence of the physical and chemical mechanisms that would support the USA findings, particularly in terms of a source of bioavailable iron leading to increased inflammatory stress response.CITATION:Beamish, B B, Ward, C R and Chalmers, D, 2017. "The Highland Uranium Project (HUP) is located approximately sixty miles northeast of Casper, Wyoming and is owned and operated by Power Resources, Inc. (PRI). With an annual production of680 tonnes (1.5 million lbs) U308, HUP is one of the largest uranium producers by in-situ leach (ISL) in the western world. Uranium is currently produced from four wellfields with a total flow rate of approximately 1,135 m3/hr (5,000 gpm). The carbonate leach solutions are processed by anion ion exchange at two satellite facilities located in close proximity to the wellfields. The loaded resin is transported by truck to a central processing facility for elution of the uranium. Uranium in the pregnant eluant is precipitated and washed prior to calcining.Wastewater from the satellite facilities is treated and used for irrigation at a Land Application Facility. The wastewater generated at the central processing facility is injected into a 2,750 m (9,000 ft) deep waste disposal well.When economical mining of the orebodies is complete, restoration of the groundwater is initiated. There are currently two wellfields at HUP undergoing ground water restoration. Phase I restoration consists of removal of the carbonate leach solution from the ore body. Phase II includes treating the withdrawn fluid with reverse osmosis and reinjection of the permeate into perimeter wells.Future plans include construction of additional satellite facilities at the Gas Hills Project and other economical deposits located within 240 km (150 mi) of HUP. The capacity of the central processing facility will be increased to 1,815 tonnes (4 million lbs) U308 per year by late 1999."

Previous legislation did not cover all work places, many areas were excluded from coverage, and there were at least 14 different acts and dozens of sets of regulations dealing with various aspects of health and safety.

Although the De Beers group has a long history of placer mining on land, the group only became actively involved in deep water marine diamond exploration and mining in 1983 with the formation of DeBeers Marine. Full-scale commercial mining commenced around1991. Since then, the group marine mining capability has grown into a formidable fleet of 8 large deep water (>70 m) mining vessels, as well as other special purpose geosurvey platforms. Marine diamond production by the group is expected to be just short of 1 million carats in 2006. De Beers operates across the entire value-chain spectrum from geology and geosurvey, through sampling to mining, and finally ore processing into high value concentrate. Supporting these operations involves significant service activities such as maintenance, security, logistics and environmental management. Specific challenges exist in terms of developing or acquiring appropriate technology for marine mining. These challenges have resulted in De Beers operating extensive in-house R&D and projects departments, as well as drawing extensively from technology partners. An array of computational and test facilities is also available to support R&D and projects activities. Hydrotransport in various guises is key to the current approaches to marine mining and ore processing. Use is made of airlift and centrifugal pumping for hydraulic hoisting of very coarse gravel, while splitters, launders, dewatering, elutriators, jet pumps, centrifugal pumps, dense medium circuits, pipeline systems, and instrumentation for coarse abrasive particles are used extensively in the ore processing plant.

At the inception of the gold-mining industry at Kalgoorlie the small supply of firewood required for steaming purposes was naturally all drawn from the limited local areas, which promised soon to become denuded. With the advent of the railway toKalgoorlie came the ever increasing machinery and steam power, and the accompanying demand for firewood so increased that the fuel contractors began their operations, by following the timber belts along the Yilgarn railway line, and graduallygetting further westward, until at present we find them as far as Woolgangie, 63 miles from Kalgoorlie, and with the regular railway rates, I0. per ton per mile, this maybe considered the limit of payable timber at current rates. Although in the early days the reserve of timber along the railway line must have appeared as incalculable and inexhaustible as that of coal did in Europe a couple of centurys ago, the day is now near us when even this source will fail to meet the demands made upon it, for, although a good two years' supply is available or the areas under the axe, yet it is time to look ahead and find from whence the future supplies are to be drawn. Along the railways we find the zone of felling operations limited for want ofcommunication, and only such portions of the forests as are within six or seven miles of the railway come under the axe at present while virgin forests to the rear remain practically unexploited. It is only in the course of the past sixteen months that the firewood industry has developed...

The urban environment and geology create unique challenges for design and construction of deep foundations. The effect of these is prominently experienced in New York City. Three such project case histories are presented in this paper. The first project is a multi-use development. Relatively unusual glacial geology was observed at the site during the subsurface investigation phase. This played an important role in the selection of deep foundations as well as during construction. The design and construction aspects of the pile foundations, settlement estimates, a pile drive test program during design, piling equipment and production pile installation are discussed herein. A relatively smaller project is the second case history. A combination of drilled and driven deep foundations was employed in one area of the project due to its unique conditions. In another area of the project, an addition to a structure required the use of supplemental foundations to resist new additional loading. Tight space and load sharing with the existing foundations were important considerations in the design and construction. Finite element modeling of the existing and completed structure was performed which was an interesting aspect of the project. The third project case history involves a very large multi-billion dollar project in which various different types of deep foundation elements were used. The aspects requiring the use of such a variety of types and sizes of deep foundation elements included: geologic conditions, re-use of existing foundations, protection of adjacent infrastructure, construction staging, restricted space, loads, deep excavations, cost and schedule.

Behaviour studies of metal dusting processes and associated filamentous carbon formation were undertaken on Alloys 600, 601, and 800 using a simulated metal dusting environment of 25C0-70H2-5H20 (vol.%) at 650°C. These samples were studied visually and by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), transmission electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (TEM-EDX) and x-ray diffraction (XRD). Visual examination and SEM surface observation showed that Alloy 800 suffered metal dusting attack at an early exposure reaction period. The coke deposit amounts increased significantly with reaction time from 168 hours to 336 hours in Alloys 600, 601, and 800. Alloy 800 showed pitting after 168 hours' exposure, and the degree of pitting increased after 336 hours. XRD showed all these alloys had a common austenitic phase, with Alloy 800 also having ferritic metal particles. Alloy 800 after 168 hours' exposure had a complex phase mixture on the surface, consisting of ferritic Fe and austenitic FeNi phases. For coke deposit, there were also Fe304, Fe3C and graphitic carbon. The existence of Fe, Ni, and Cr metal particles, and also graphitic carbon in coke deposits, was confirmed by EDX analyses.

The Jollyville Transmission Main will be a 10.5-km- (6.5-mile)-long, 213-cm (84-in.) diameter rock tunnel. The tunnel will pass beneath the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve, which was established to protect two endangered bird species, six endangered cave invertebrates and a threatened salamander. To address the sensitive habitat that the transmission main is to pass through, the city of Austin developed an environmental commissioning (EC) process that brought together environmental engineers and scientists, the city?s project management team and the designer team to work collaboratively to meet the city?s goals of producing a cost-effective design while also protecting the environment. This paper describes the environmental commissioning process and the benefits it brought to the project and environment through some unique environmental mitigation measures to protect this sensitive area.

A series of gas inrush events occurred during development at Grosvenor mine resulting in exposure to elevated levels of methane at the production face. A total of 22 gas inrush events occurred releasing between 15 and 130 m3 of methane during each event. The presence of an undrained seam in the immediate floor, geotechnical characteristics of the floor, and the stress environment all contributed to these dynamic floor events, while the geological characteristics of the seam below, such as the seam thickness and ash content of 75%, prevented effective pre-drainage. However, events only occurred in headings mined parallel to the principal horizontal stress direction. In cut-throughs (C/Ts) perpendicular to the principal stress direction, no events occurred, and higher methane levels were observed at the production face.

"PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATIONOf more than 300 bituminous mines examined by Crichton 5 and his assistants in connection with litigation in Indian Creek Valley, Payette County, Pa., only four were found to have alkaline water. That work and many observations from of the authors have shown the general prevalence or acid drainage from bituminous coal mines. Reactions between metal and slag are of decisive importance for metallurgical processing. In the continuous casting process, where metal solidifies at the metal-slag interface, reaction products can cause surface defects, with quality damages of the cast products as a consequence. These investigations are focused on the contact area between casting flux and metal. The samples were taken from the mould during the casting process. The results show that layers up to approximately 300 nm from the slag/metal interface represent a specific reaction space. Sodium in this layer on the slag side plays a specific role, which is explained on the basis of experimental results. The transport of oxygen near the interface and the charge transfer is explained on the basis of the ionic character of the slag. The mass transfer rate of oxygen crossing the interface is calculated from measured data, and conclusions concerning the stability of the interfacial tension are made. THE flotation plant at Mount Lyell was erected, primarily, for the treatment of ore from the Lyell Comstock mine. These workings are situated over a mile in a direct line north of the North Mount Lyell mine, and are connected with the Reduction Work at Queenstown by a 2-ft. gauge steel tramway via the Queen River valley a distance of 7 miles. The property was purchased from the Mount Lyell Comstock Copper Co. After the disastrous fire in the North Mount Lyell mine in October, 1912, steps were immediately taken to make Lyell Comstock ore available for treatment, in order to relieve distress caused by any prolonged stoppage of work, and subsequently 13,032 tons of ore, averaging 3.38 %copper, 0.28 oz. silver, and 0.034 oz. gold; were smelted. When operations were resumed at the North Mount Lyell mine, it was evident that there was no economic advantage in smelting Lyell Comstock ore as compared with the higher value North Mount Lyell ore, which was also a better flux for the Mount Lyell pyrites, and that the future of the Lyell Comstock ore depended upon cheap mining and successful concentration of the ore. Therefore, extensive trenching and diamond-drilling was carried out, and a sufficiently large quantity of ore proved available for cheap extraction by open-cut methods. At the same time bulk tests by flotation were carried out at the Minerals Separation testing plant in Melbourne on different classes of ore from the Mount Lyell Comstock mine proper, followed by laboratory tests at Queenstown on all classes of ore available. All these tests demonstrated that the ore was amenable to the process, provided that it was ground finely enough. Perhaps the most significant development in coal mine ground control during the last century was the introduction of roof bolting during the late 1940’s and 1950’s. From an engineering standpoint, roof bolts are inherently more effective than the wood timbers they replaced. Roof bolts promised to dramatically reduce the number of roof fall accidents, which then claimed hundreds of lives each year, and they were initially hailed as “one of the great social advances of our time.” Roof bolting also emerged at a time of rapid technologic transformation of the coal industry, and greatly accelerated the transition to trackless, rubber-tired face haulage. The U.S. Bureau of Mines quickly became the new roof support’s strongest advocate. Some state agencies and miners were skeptical at first, but nearly everyone was soon won over. Case histories were reported showing that roof falls could be largely eliminated while productivity increased dramatically. Little wonder that, in the words of one contemporary observer, “roof bolting has been adopted more rapidly than any other new technology in the history of coal mine mechanization.” Yet by the end of the 1950’s, it was clear that roof fall fatality incidence rates had actually increased. It would be another decade before the superior ground support provided by roof bolts would clearly save lives. The story of how roof bolting was implemented by the mining industry, but took so long to live up to its promise, is a fascinating example of the interaction between economics, technology, regulation, and science. It still has important lessons for today.

The mining industry has had three difficult years. Commodity prices have remained low and investor confidence in the industry has been shaken. And even though the Asian economy appears to be improving, it will be some time before this improvement will translate into better commodity price conditions for mining. In addition, increased environmental and social restrictions that have been placed on the industry in developed and developing countries have made mining a more difficult proposition. And, if that is not enough, the global mining industry has found itself in fierce competition with Internet businesses for investor capital. Despite that gloomy picture, more than 10,500 mining industry professionals from about 70 countries gathered in Toronto, Ontario March 5-10, 2000 for the Mining Millennium 2000 conference. This meeting was a joint effort between the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum(CIM) and the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC).The joint meeting also featured two trade exhibitions and more than 150speakers. PDAC’s trade show attracted about 400 exhibitors and an additional 200 in the concurrent Investors’ Exchange. CIM’s exhibition attracted about 600 equipment and service companies.

The development and use of rock mass classification tools have been a key component for improving stope design over the past 4 years at the Xstrata Zinc George Fisher Mine in northern Queensland, Australia. In 2003, stope extraction data from 3 years of open-stope mining provided an excellent situation to review the assumptions in the feasibility study. Extracted stope profile information, drillhole geotechnical data, underground observations, and oral and written communication were used to develop a thorough stope reconciliation performance database. With-out collecting the back analysis data and presenting the data in a usable format, engineers are left to debate opinion instead of engineered judgment. This can lead to biased and uninformed design parameter choices with the potential to repeat poor design. This paper demonstrates some effective, practical examples of empirical data collection where rock mass classifications tools were developed and used to create improved confidence in predicting stope stability and failure profiles. The work contributed to design changes that resulted in a reduction in stope hangingwall dilution and an increase in head grade while continuing to ramp up production from 2003–2005.

The Bismark Mine is located in northern Chihuahua, Mexico, 150 km (95 miles) southwest of Ciudad Juarez (Fig.1). The ore deposit was discovered in 1979 and was placed in production in 1992. The production rate is about 2.4 kt/d (2650 stpd) from an ore reserve of 8.5 Mt (9.3 million st). Grades currently average about 8% zinc, 0.5% lead, 0.2% copper and 50 g/t (1.46 oz/st) silver. Substantial inflows of water into the underground mine complicate the operation. Complex metallurgy poses another challenge for the operators. Bismark is a joint venture with 90% participation by Minas Penoles, SA de CR of Mexico City and 10% participation by Promociones Industriales Banamex, S A de C V (PIB S A) of Mexico City. Anew company, Minera Bismark, SA de CV was formed to operate the property. Cyprus Minerals was a 40% participant in the joint venture but, in early 1993, sold its share to Minas Penoles. The Bismark Mine is one of the largest new underground mining projects built in Mexico during the last 10 years. It is the country's fifth largest underground metal mine and provides about 1 % of the world's zinc supply at about 50 t/a (55,000 stpy). Bismark is a trackless operation with overall productivities of 7.6 t/manshift (8.4 st/manshift). The 2.4-kt/d (2650-stpd) concentrator started up in March 1992.

In 2003, Independence Group NL purchased the Long Shaft Nickel Mine complex (Long) in Kambalda, Western Australia. Lightning Nickel, the nickel operating arm of Independence Group, faced considerable challenges operating the mine, with the most significant challenge being able to prove that the remnant ore at Long and the associated orebodies could be mined safely and efficiently. Given the seismic history at Long, the magnitude of these challenges could not be underestimated. In an effort to achieve 100 per cent extraction of the flatter orebodies, traditional methods such as room and pillar were dismissed. A method consisting of transverse sills, butting into each other was proposed. To stop fill material from the first sill rilling into the adjoining sill, it was proposed to backfill the sills with pumped cement fill. The capital cost of the fill plant was estimated to be in excess of $1.5 million and the cost for cement alone was $1.0 million per annum. Shotcrete was already an extremely useful tool in dealing with the widely variable stress environment, but was to be used in an innovative manner that would enable the full extraction of a tabular section of the Victor South orebody. A layer of shotcrete, approximately 100 mm thick, was to be sprayed on the up dip wall of the initial development sill. The sill was to be backfilled with ænormalÆ development waste and ætoppedÆ with sand backfill. The next sill, ie slightly up dip and alongside, was to be mined along the shotcrete boundary wall. With respect to wall stability, the premise was that the shotcrete wall would stay in place and prevent the backfill (development waste and sand) from rilling into the adjoining development. It was also proposed that any breaches of the shotcrete wall would be repaired using shotcrete before substantial inflow of backfill into the ænewÆ development. This paper describes the development and implementation of this mining method, as well as some of the associated financial aspects.

A computerized data bank containing over 19,000 pieces of coal mine equipment in use in 1976 was prepared with a data retrieval program. Operator protective structure technology is reviewed; field problems experienced with ROPS are discussed.

Grunerite asbestos (amosite) has been shown in epidemiological and experimental animal studies to cause lung cancer, mesothelioma and pulmonary fibrosis commonly referred to as asbestosis. An overview of the human and experimental animal studies describing the health hazards of grunerite asbestos (amosite) is presented. Of the many human studies describing the health hazards of asbestos, only three factories using mainly, if not exclusively, grunerite asbestos (amosite) have been studied. The first is a series of reports on a cohort of 820 workers from a plant located in Paterson, NJ. Among this cohort, 18.7% died of lung cancer and 17 mesotheliomas occurred. The Paterson factory closed in 1954 and moved to Tyler, Texas where it operated until 1972. Among the 1130 former workers in the Tyler plant 6 mesotheliomas were reported with 15.8% lung cancer mortality. The third grunerite asbestos (amosite) exposed cohort was an insulation board manufacturing facility in Uxbridge, United Kingdom. Here 17.1% of the workers died of lung cancer and 5 mesotheliomas occurred. The lung content from 48 Uxbridge workers was analyzed by analytical transmission electron microscopy for mineral fibers. The relationship between grunerite asbestos (amosite) concentrations in the lung correlated with grades of fibrosis and asbestos bodies and was lower than the concentration found in the cases with malignant tumors. The lung cancer cases contained more grunerite asbestos (amosite) than mesothelioma cases, and in the cases of non-alignant disease the concentrations were still lower. In both types of malignancies the concentration of grunerite asbestos (amosite) was very high-over a billion fibers per gram of dried lung tissue. Occupational exposure to airborne concentrations of between 14 and 100 fibers of grunerite asbestos (amosite) per milliliter after 20 year latency causes marked increases in lung cancer, mesothelioma and pulmonary fibrosis (asbestosis). © 2007 Elsevier Inc.
