Introduction Newmont Mining Corp.'s Carlin Gold Mining Co. mines gold ore and waste material from four open-pit mines in Northeastern Nevada. Combined production rate is 24.5 Mt/a (27 million stpy). The company is producing gold bullion from the 2.4 kt/d (2600 stpd) Carlin Mill No. 1. and the 2.3 kt/d (2600 stpd) Maggie Creek heap leaching plant. In August 1985, the 6.3 kt/d (7000 stpd) Carlin Mill No. 2 at Gold Quarry came on-line. The total combined throughput of 11.2 kt/d (12,000 stpd) will make Carlin Gold Mining one of the largest US gold producers. Feasibility studies are underway to increase the total gold out-put from Gold Quarry. This will be done by adding a continuous dump-leaching process that will recover gold from lower grade ore. History In 1961, Newmont exploration geologists located claims in the Lynn Creek mining district near Carlin, NV. An exploration drilling program revealed significant gold mineralization. A stepped-up drilling program revealed an ore body with an estimated 10 Mt (11 million st) of ore containing 109 t (3.5 million oz) of gold. Test results in 1963 allowed metallurgists to develop the flowsheet and design for a 1.8-kt/d (2000-stpd) countercurrent decantation (CCD) cyanide plant. Carlin Gold Mining Co. was formed to operate the property. Carlin purchased its first mining equipment in 1965. This consisted of two Bucyrus-Erie 2.7 m3 (3.5 cu yd) shovels and nine 27.2 t (30 st) Wabco Haulpak trucks, two Inger¬soll-Rand track-mounted drills, one Chicago Pneumatic T-650 rotary drill, one rubber tired Michigan 280 dozer, one Caterpillar D-8 36A track dozer, one Caterpillar 16 motor grader, and the necessary ancillary equipment. The fleet was capable of mining 3.2 Mt/a (3.5 mil¬lion stpy) working two eight-hour shifts, five days a week. In 1967, one P&H 1500 3.8 m3(5 cu yd) diesel electrical shovel and three 59 t (65 st) Dart trucks were added to the fleet, along with a Chicago Pneumatic rubber tire mounted rotary drill. This equipment addition increased the mining capabilities to 5.7 Mt/a (6.3 million stpy). Three separate pits, the Main, East, and West, within a 1.6-km (1-mile) radius of the Carlin mill were being mined. The crew consisted of 46 hourly men and three supervisors. This equals 497 t/ total hourly manshift (548 st) or 407 t/total manshift (515 st). Rising gold prices in the early 1970s allowed lower grade deposits to be mined at greater distances from the mill. The Boot-strap pit, 19.3 km (12 miles) north of Carlin, was started in 1973. Dunsmuir Ventures? Nanuq diamond project is located approximately 250 km northeast of Baker Lake and 170 km north of Chesterfield Inlet. It occurs at the intersection of the Wager Bay shear zone with the Keewatin Arch, a major long-lived crustal uplift. The newly discovered diamondiferous kimberlites at Rankin Inlet, Repulse Bay and on Melville Peninsula also occur along this arch. Kimberlite indicator mineral (KIM) sampling has outlined a distinct KIM train more than 35 km long and 6 km wide. Geomorphological studies, boulder displacements and dispersion of magnetite in tills suggest that glacial transport distances were on the order of 4 to 6 kms only. The presence of multiple sources within the main Nanuq indicator train would account for its length and breadth. A second train has been located on the west central part of the property and anomalous concentrations of KIM occur elsewhere. Pyrope garnets (G9?s and G10?s), diamond inclusion field (DI) eclogitic garnets and DI chromites were confirmed by microprobe analyses. Clinopyroxene thermobarometry indicates a cool geotherm, approximately 35 mW/m2, and that mantle within the diamond stability field was tapped. An aeromagnetic survey has identified a number of anomalies. Those with down ice KIM support will have ground geophysical follow-up and will be tested in a spring 2004 drill program. Dunsmuir is optimistic that this will lead to the discovery of a new kimberlite cluster on the Nanuq property.

A numerical approach has been implemented to assess the settlements of pile groups bearing in clay. A three-dimensional finite element program has been utilized to model a vertically loaded spread footing, a single pile and a pile group. The soil-pile interaction was modeled with elastoplastic soil and interface elements. The model has been calibrated using a full scale load test results of the spread footing. The load transfer between the pile cap and the piles was assessed and compared with the measured load transfer. The predicted settlements for the pile group were compared with the settlements measured in the load test. Two analytical methods were adopted to predict the pile group settlements and they were compared with the measured values. The group effect determined from the analysis and load tests was compared with the interaction factor approach. It was shown that three-dimensional finite element approach can be successfully utilized to assess the soil-structure interaction and hence the load transfer between the piles and pile cap. Also, it was shown that the interaction factors method and equivalent footing method work well in the working stress range, however they underpredict the settlements at larger loads. INTRODUCTION The settlement and stress distribution of pile groups have been traditionally estimated based on load test results of single piles and accounting for the group effect using various approaches. The most widely used approaches are group interaction factor method, equivalent footing method and equivalent pier method. These approximate solutions are used very commonly in practice as full-scale load tests on pile groups are very expensive and time consuming. These approximate solutions are also adopted in design guidelines such as AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Guidelines (2014) and FHWA Design and Construction of Driven Pile Foundations (2016). In this paper, a full-scale foundation load tests performed by Nagai et al. (1961) and reported by Koizumi and Ito (1967) is modelled using a three-dimensional numerical method. The settlements and the stress distribution on foundations were then compared with the traditional equivalent footing method and interaction factor methods.

INTRODUCTION The design/build (D/B) philosophy of contract delivery is neither new nor unusual when it comes to at-grade, elevated or high-rise structures. But when it comes to constructing underground facilities, there were no examples to be followed in early 90sin the continental United States or its territories. When DMJM+HARRIS was selected as general architectural and engineering consultant for the Tren Urbano (TU) project in Puerto Rico, one of the requirements of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) for funding commitment was to use TU as a demonstration project utilizing design/build contract delivery method. Now fifteen years later, New York City Transit (NYCT) has instituted a similar requirement for their first Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) contract for the Second Avenue Subway. As with most construction mega-projects, lots of things have happened and there were several lessons learned from the TU experience that are now being applied to Second Avenue. Both of these projects require building tunnels and underground transit facilities in heavily traveled corridors of an urban city, in the vicinity of active business and commercial enterprises. To enhance the challenge, there are noise and vibration sensitive and historic urban receptors either over or along both the transit corridors. Column free Tren Urbano station caverns over18 m (60 ft.) wide were built in soft ground conditions within 3.6 m (12 ft.) of the surface under an aging heavy utility corridor, while NYCT tunnels with station structures stretching the limits of rock caverns to 34.8 m (100 ft.), were planned in rocky geology with the presence of shear and fault zones and some mixed face conditions. BACKGROUND During the early period of design/build experimentation, the speed with which the contract procurement packages could be put together enabled the owners to take advantage of the major efforts underway to rebuild the infrastructure that was suffering from post-World War II neglect. In September 2004, Gale Norton, U.S. Secretary of the Interior, presented the Manhattan Mine with a U.S. Bureau of Land Management’s 2004 Hardrock Mineral Environmental Award. The Manhattan Mine is a sustainable development showcase. The reclamation accomplishments at this Nevada gold mine demonstrate how modern reclamation techniques can restore an old mining district into an aesthetically pleasing landscape that can support multiple and sustainable uses. In a collaborative effort that relied on substantial community involvement, Round Mountain Gold Corp.(RMGC) has improved the environment and eliminated a number of public hazards associated with old, unsafe mining features. RMGC’s community collaboration, innovative engineering, creative reclamation design and corporate commitment to environmental excellence show what Secretary Norton’s 4 Cs Initiative looks like on the ground and inaction.

How did you get into mining; were you from a mining town or mining family? Not at all. I grew up in northwest Kansas. I liked to hunt and fish, so I thought it would be fun to work for a company that made knives or guns. It seemed like metallurgical engineers would be something those companies could use, so I started in physical metallurgy. I got a summer job at the great Climax molybdenum mine near Leadville, CO shoveling muck onto conveyors. I was hooked. I loved everything about mining, so in the fall, I changed majors from physical metallurgy to mineral processing. For many years you actually discouraged young people from studying the mining disciplines. Could that be right? That’s true.

Background The resources of the Gippsland Basin include not only the coal and oil for which it is well known, but also the tourism resource and the quality of life which it offers its residents and visitors. To manage this group of resources requires an understanding and ability to predict the consequences of possible developments. The water of the streams and estuaries as a key component as it is both a resource and the means for transporting wastes from one area to another. To aid in the resource planning process there is a need for models of the estuarine hydraulic processes. This paper describes an appropriate modelling technique. Resource use conflicts may arise from developments in the catchment upstream of the estuarine reach. For example the diversion of water for domestic and industrial use will change the velocity and salinity structure of the downstream estuary. In turn these changes will affect sediment distribution and deposition patterns and may impose stress on the biological communities and ultimately on the fisheries resources and water quality. The manager of an estuarine system may have expertise in ecology, hydraulics or another of the specialist disciplines involved, but commonly will not. The manager will identify needs for resource and development and the broad options required to satisfy them. The manager will use these studies as the basis for his/her selection of the option for execution. Thus a model for'use by the manager of an estuarine system must have the following properties: (i) The model must be sufficiently accurate to throw up all the likely options. (ii) The model must be capable of being run by the manager, interactively, to answer `what if' questions. This requirement implies a simple code andhardware limited to a personal computer or possibly a desk top work station. (iii) The model must be robust so that unrealistic input oes not generate apparently useful output, and no output is generated for cases where the model is not designed to give results. (iv) The model must be capable of being used as part of a modelling system comprising models of all the geographic and demographic components

The Coffee Creek lode gold discoveries are located in the White Gold district (Dawson Range), west-central Yukon, 130 km south of Dawson City and 30 km south of the Golden Saddle gold deposit (Figure 1). Extensive structurally-controlled gold mineralization has been discovered during the 2010 and 2011 exploration drilling campaigns, highlighting this part of the Dawson Range as a significant emerging gold district. [ ] In this contribution we review the geological framework and describe the mineralization styles and metal signatures observed to date on the Coffee project. The main Coffee area is underlain by a 15 km by 4 km geochemical footprint, characterized by discrete linear gold-in-soil anomalies that correspond to various mineralized corridors. Of several mineralized areas tested in the past two drill seasons by diamond core and reverse-circulation (RC) drilling, we focus on the Supremo, Double Double, Latte and Kona zones; areas with the most information obtained from drilling thus far (Table 1; Figure 2).

The Liaoning Dahuofang Reservoir Water Transfer Project is an important development for the Department of Water Resources of Liaoning Province in northeastern China. The 85.3 km water conduit will transport water from the Hun River downstream of the Huanren Reservoir to the outlet on the Suzi River leading to the Dahuofang Reservoir. The additional water is required to sustain the growing cities of Fushun, Shen-yang, Liaoyang, Anshan, Panjin and Yingkou. The project is divided into seven contracts. Three TBM contracts comprise almost 75% of the work and the others are drill and shoot. The focus of this paper is about the creditable TBM performances achieved and some of the problems encountered by Chinese contractors; notably two having had no previous TBM experience.

A combined reflection seismic and magnetic survey off the south coast of New South Wales has revealed six distinct reflection horizons within the Lower Triassic-Upper Permian sequence, and has enabled the upper part of the lllawarra Coal Measures to be mapped in considerable detail. Large magnetic anomalies in the eastern half of the survey area appear to originate in the Gerringong Volcanic Sequence which forms the magnetic basement in the survey. Small residual anomalies in the western half of the area can be correlated with small scale faulting and folding in the upper part of the llawarra Coal Measures, as revealed by the seismic reflection survey.A synclinal axis striking at approximately 55° has been mapped near the western margin of the survey area, and areas of faulting and folding have been outlined by combined analysis of seismic and magnetic results.

Automatic data acquisition and recording systems were installed to monitor the variation of the temperatures in the soil during the freezing intervention in order to control the behaviour and the efficacy of the treatment.IntroductionThe Sophia rail tunnel is a bored tunnel with a length of 4.24 km, comprising two separate parallel tubes with an outside diameter of 9.45 m. The twin tunnels were excavated by a TBM equipped with hydroshield. Seven service shafts, approximately 30 m deep, were constructed in between the tunnels. From each shaft two cross passages were constructed connecting the shaft with both tubes, for a total of 14 cross passages.The Artificial Ground Freezing technique utilizing both the Brine and Liquid Nitrogen methods was used for temporary waterproofing and soil support to allow the excavation of the cross passages. The natural soil to be frozen was consisting in loose sand and clay under a hydrostatic pressure up to 250 kPa.For the measurement of the ground temperature. Automatic data acquisition and recording systems were installed to monitor the variation of the temperatures in the soil and at the contact with the tunnel lining. Furthermore, a comprehensive computerized system of sensors and cryogenic valves was designed and implemented in order to manage the whole Nitrogen process.Soil Main CharacteristicsThe soil stratigraphy is generally consisting in Clay (Holocene) from ground level to -15 m depth, followed by Pleistocenic Sand, from -15 to -25 m, and Clay below -25 m."

The paper presents an approach to design a multi level room and pillar layout in a 40m thick seam overlain by a major aquifer. The design was required to maximise extraction with due consideration of the general stability of the workings, the potential water hazards, and spontaneous combustion risks due to air leakage between horizons. The approach utilised was a combination of empirical pillar sizing for water hazard control with numerical modelling to assess potential interactions between horizons. The numerical modelling allowed the size of interleaves, and the appropriate staggers to be optimised in terms of stress distribution. The stress distribution allows both the general stability of the openings and more importantly the permeability changes around the openings to be determined. The permeability of coal is sensitive to stress, and an empirical stress to permeability relationship, and theoretical permeability to flow leakage relationship has been applied to interpreting the relative spontaneous combustion risk associated with each of the proposed layouts. The final proposed design is a compromise between maximum exploitation of reserves and consideration of water hazards and of spontaneous combustion risk. Further more detailed design will be required as more comprehensive data on the geotechnical properties of the coal and overburden become available.

China has abundant magnesite resource, but the low-grade and powder ores have always been rejected, which influences the comprehensive utilization of resource and often causes circumstance problems. The present work investigated the preparation of magnesia whisker using magnesite tailings as starting materials by preparation magnesium carbonate whisker as precursor firstly in the route of calcination, hydration, carbonation and pyrolysis, follows by second calcination of the precursor. The influence of pyrolysis conditions and additives on morphology of magnesium carbonate crystal as well as the influence of calcination conditions on morphology of magnesia whisker was investigated. The results showed that thermal decomposition products was MgCO3?3H2O. Magnesium carbonate whisker with length of 10~60 µm and the length-to-diameter ratio of 10~20 was prepared when soluble magnesium salt was added. While temperature was elevated at 1°C?min-1, magnesia whisker with length of 10~60µm was obtained.

The following minerals found in the residual black sands from gold mining in El Bagre Antioquia (Colombia) were identified as having major economic interest: Ilmenite (FeTiO3), with an average of 49% of TiO2, frequently altered presenting crowns; lamellaes of rutile and alteration textures; titanomagnetite with up to 25% of TiO2; magnetite (Fe3O4) in individual grains or associated with others minerals as hematite and ferromagnesian silicates rutile (TiO2) with considerable quantities of Nb2O5(0.1-3.7%Wt); zircon (ZrSiO4) with 66%Wt of ZrO2 and monazite with an average of 63.43%Wt of REE, this frequently associated to xenotime and thorite forming textures as little drops. Analysis in EPMA and SEM/EDS showed percentages of minor elements and traces, thereby clearly establishing the applications of these minerals in diverse industries. Furthermore, a detailed granumetric study of the different minerals and textural relationships among them also allowed for establishing the basis for possible processing and exploitation.

Sandstone, a widely distributed siliceous sedimentary rock, is the third most popular building stone in the United States. It is formed by the breaking down of preexisting rocks by weathering, subsequent segregation of the detrital quartz grains into discrete deposits by the sorting action of water or wind, and finally cementation of the quartz sand into a coherent rock. The homogeneity and resistance to weathering of the resultant sandstone make it suitable for exterior construction. Its excellent wearing properties explain its popularity for flagging and stair treads. However, quarrying and dressing methods and costs are adversely affected by the abrasiveness and hardness of sandstone especially as compared to limestone.

Multiple seam underground coal mining is ubiquitous in Appalachia. Many coal properties have from two to ten or more economically mineable coal seams. Because of the ability to penetrate 600-feet to 1,000-feet or deeper into the mountainside leaving panels of web pillars separated by barrier pillars, highwall mining is a hybrid between surface and underground mining. As a result, many of the ground control problems commonly associated with multiple seam underground mining exist with multiple seam highwall mining. These include: i) superjacent mines, subsidence and caving propagating to overlying seams and ii) mines, pooled water and the potential for inundation resulting from a iii) breakthrough between an active highwall mine and abandoned underground mines in the same or superjacent seams, the presence of overlying or underlying mine workings where iv) pillar columnization in the active mine is not possible, and v) the question of whether to mine ?top-down? or ?bottom-up.? Case histories are presented from southeast Ohio where the Middle Kittanning No. 6 and Lower Kittanning No. 5 seams are successfully highwall mined with 20-feet to 40-feet of largely shale interburden. A highwall miner was caught in a highwall collapse in the Middle Kittanning No. 6 seam when it was overmining auger workings in the Lower Kittanning No. 5 seam. Multiple seam interaction caused by the overmining transferred overburden stress onto the Lower Kittanning No. 5 seam. The overburden concentrated through web pillars initiated auger web pillar failure, resulting in roof collapse and subsidence in the Lower Kittanning No. 5 seam that propagated up to the Middle Kittanning No. 6 seam. A second case history involves multiple seam highwall mining in southeast Kentucky. The A3 Rider, A3, B2, and C1 seams are being highwall mined around abandoned underground mines in the A3 and B2 seams and augering in the A3 Rider. Because of spoil storage constraints for the surface contour mines, the highwall miner follows the active pits in each seam so a standard sequence of ?top-down? or ?bottom-up mining does not exist. The planning and engineering design considerations associated with each case history is presented along with geotechnical information. In the case of the highwall collapse a back analysis is presented of the stability and safety factors for the auger webs, highwall miner web pillars, and barrier pillars.

Around the world, mining has been done for thousands of years for the benefit of humankind. The winning process in mining operations ends with the depletion of the deposit or its closure if the operation becomes economically unprofitable. After that, a period of post-mining follows which may last for a very long time and which is generally regarded as a period of hazards, risk and high cost. In the USA alone, approximately 500,000 abandoned mines do exist; worldwide, there are millions. In Germany, too, we have had to deal with abandoned mines for a considerable period of time now.

"The traditional metallurgical scale-up techniques for flotation plants are based on lumped flotation rate constants, dimensionless hydrodynamic numbers and the use of safety factors. Once the plant has been designed, the flotation principles that govern scale-up play almost no role in the optimisation of the circuit to meet its metallurgical targets. This deficiency can potentially lead to a plant design incapable of meeting its targets, especially when circuits incorporate large flotation cells. This paper demonstrates the application of the k = PSbRf model in providing a suitable framework for flotation modelling, scale-up and circuit optimisation, thus presenting an integrated approach to the problem. Studies were conducted at Teck Cominco’s Red Dog concentrator to characterise cell hydrodynamics, gas dispersion properties, fioth flow behaviour, entrainment and ore floatability to obtain the key data necessary to develop a model for the flotation circuit. The findings of these studies are presented in this paper, which provide valuable insights into the modelling and optimisation of the Red Dog flotation circuit.INTRODUCTIONThe traditional methodology for flotation scale-up and plant design is based on the rule-of-thumb with safety factors, dimensionless hydrodynamic group similitude considerations, etc. With the recent trend towards larger flotation cells with volumes of 150 m3 and greater in concentrators, the problem of scale-up has become even more acute. The scale-up factors that may have been tolerated on smaller cells are not applicable to larger cells. The transportation of froth in these large cells adds further complexity to the problem. Arbiter et al. (1980) foresaw this problem and pointed out that if scale-up were attempted by rule-of-thumb and trial-and-error, then the probability of failure would increase with scale. This problem is confounded by the fact that the design and scale-up considerations used for a new flotation circuit play almost no role in optimisation of the circuit to meet its metallurgical target. This results in a plant design incapable of meeting its metallurgical targets. There have been several instances where new concentrators have required significant circuit modifications and additional capacity to achieve design targets."
