Nonlinear seismic deformation analyses using the finite difference program FLAC were performed for a wastewater treatment plant to estimate foundation displacement and performance of two proposed trickling filters during the 2475-year event design earthquake. The effective stress based constitutive model UBCSAND, which captures the cyclic behavior of both the “sand-like” and “clay-like” materials, was used to model the dynamic response of the soil strata. Dynamic analyses of the site indicated that in absence of ground improvement or deep foundations beneath the proposed trickling filters, those structures would undergo horizontal displacements in excess of 1 m and short-term differential settlement gradient of about 400 mm over 50 m as a result of seismic and post-seismic settlements. Three mitigation options were considered for limiting the seismic displacements and differential settlement gradients of the proposed trickling filters. These alternatives include vibro-replacement stone columns, vibro-replacement stone columns plus supplementary cutter soil mixing (CSM) configurations, and pile foundations. Various layouts for each mitigation option were considered including the lateral extent of the ground improvement, CSM walls and pile spacing. Seismic horizontal and vertical displacements of the proposed structures as well as post-earthquake consolidation settlements due to dissipation of excess pore water pressures in soil layers were assessed in all the analysis alternatives. The analyses indicate that all the alternatives considered have the potential to provide a comparable level of seismic and post-seismic performance. However, for similar performance levels, the ground improvement options need to extend well beyond the edges of the proposed structures, while the piles can be limited to just beneath the footprint of the structures. INTRODUCTION Annacis Island Wastewater Treatment Plant (AIWWTP) is owned and operated by Greater Vancouver Sewerage and Drainage District and services a population of approximately 1 million people in Vancouver, British Columbia. Wastewater is generated by residential, commercial, and industrial sectors and the treated effluent is discharged to Annieville Channel of Fraser River on the south side of Annacis Island. AIWWTP is located on a 51-hectare site and was commissioned in 1975 as a primary treatment plant, but has had two major expansions to meet the population growth needs, and to improve the treatment process efficiency through the provision of secondary treatment of the liquid stream. The current expansion includes construction of additional solids contact tanks and secondary clarifiers. Future expansions include the construction of proposed additional trickling filters. New expansion structures are required to be designed for post-seismic operation after the 2475-year event design earthquake.

"The economic and strategic importance of PGE bearing deposits is fuelling renewed exploration and development efforts in the precious metals mining sector.This paper presents a review of the various techniques used in the processing of PGE bearing ores, from primary benificiation to processing routes for the different flowsheets that have been developed amongst current producers. Recent innovations such as preconcentration of ore using gravity separation, recent trends in flotation circuit design and the development of hydrometallurgical routes for the direct treatment of flotation concentrates without the need for smelting will be discussed. Data from recent projects will be presented to illustrate common characteristics of PGE ores and concentrates.INTRODUCTIONThe six platinum-group elements (PGE): ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium and platinum, together with gold and silver, are considered to be ""precious"" metals. The recent spike in platinum and palladium prices coupled with the projected increase in demand for the metals has fuelled a spate of exploration and new projects in the PGE sector. Historically primary producers of PGE metals have controlled the flow of information relating to the mining and processing of these ores into the public domain. Very little published information relating to individual operations and processes is available in comparison to the abundant literature relating to other metals.The purpose of this paper is to provide a general overview of the issues relating to the processing of PGE ores. Each topic discussed could easily be the topic of a paper or book and so in many cases only the surface of the topic will be scratched. An attempt has therefore been made to provide as many references as possible.This paper discusses the classification and location of PGE ores, the mineralogical factors that affect recovery of PGE's, methods currently used for recovering PGE's and process trends in PGE metallurgy."

When the Mining Bill came before the Victorian Legislature not so many months ago, the question arose whether mining managers required education, and to what extent. Some members of the House expressed themselves in a way which appeared to leave the impression that mining managers would be all the better if they were not brought up in a scientific school.To try and prove what we owe to science I will give a short history of colonial mining from the earlier period to the present time and compare results.I believe I am right in saying that South Australia is the pioneer colony in mining and to her belongs the credit of not dnly being the first mining colony, but also that her beginning turned out so successful, as the history of the Burra Burra copper mine will testify. At about the same time a little galena mining was carried on nearer to Adelaide, but as this did not prove a success and was only worked by tributing parties, little notice was taken of it.

Dust emission from blast demolition and other construction activities can be a nuisance; it is widely recognized that fine particles less than 10 µm in equivalent diameter (called PM10) may cause health problems. Mist spray systems, such as rain guns, sprinklers, water/surfactant sprays (or foams) etc., are some of the most effective dust suppression methods. A large amount of research has showed that when water droplets are produced in an equal amount to that of dust particles, the airborne dust is suppressed by the agglomeration of dust and mist particles. A method for generating micro-sized mist from water, achieved by the detonation of explosives in the water tube, was suggested and is called the ‘detonationdriven water bag burst system’. There are many experimentally observed limitations of the explosioninduced water break-up process. The water bag explosion tests were simulated using the AUTODYN software, in order to investigate the aerosolization mechanisms of the detonation-driven water and water break-up process into micron-sized droplets. As a result of the numerical analyses, the diffusion direction of water when detonating in the central interior part of water tube was radioactive and significantly stronger than when detonating in the bottom exterior part; this is due to the compressive flow of the volume change inside of the water tube, which resulted from the blasting wave inside of the tube, as well as the reflected pressure on the ground. Blast tests of full-scaled reinforced concrete columns were conducted to verify the effectiveness of the suggested detonation-driven water bag burst system. The water breakdown and dispersion that occurred while blasting the reinforced concrete columns were observed using a high-speed camera, and dust generation was monitored using four density detectors. The suggested detonation-driven water bag burst system showed that the average dust density decreased by up to 7 mg/m3.

This study aimed to produce magnesium oxide (MgO) particles with different properties from dolomite ore using an experimental procedure comprising four stages: sample preparation (S1), HCl leaching (S2), precipitation (S3), and calcination (S4). Three different base sources (NaOH, KOH, and NH4OH) were used as precipitant in the third stage to obtain magnesium hydroxide [Mg(OH)2] from a leachate solution, which was obtained in the second stage. Next, Mg(OH)2 particles generated by different alkali sources were calcined at various temperatures from 600–1000 °C for different durations (1–5 h). The effect of these base types on the properties of each product was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and wet chemical analyses. The experimental results indicated that each product was identified as periclase (MgO) mineral, which was produced with a specific surface area (SSA) of 4.49–44.54 m2 /g depending on the production conditions. The surface roughness of the MgO particles increased with increasing calcination temperature. SEM analyses showed that MgO particles produced at a temperature of 600 or 800 °C were amorphous, indicating that the process was not influenced by the base type, but MgO crystals were smooth when the calcination temperature was 1000 °C. Finally, it was determined from all experimental findings that MgO particles produced via the addition of NaOH have superior properties (such as higher SSA and lower surface roughness) compared with MgO particles produced with KOH or NH4OH as the alkali source. These properties led to great improvement of its usability in industry.

A post grouted drilled shaft foundation system was successfully used in place of the specified driven pile foundation system as a Value Engineering Cost Proposal (VECP) for the new PGA Boulevard Grade Separation Project. Pressure grouting the cohesionless sandy soils at the drilled shaft base significantly increased the end bearing capacity and stiffness allowing drilled shafts to be the more cost effective foundation system. The post grouted drilled shaft option also provided other benefits including reducing owners risk normally associated with pile driving vibrations and offered a high level of quality assurance for the drilled shafts. This paper discusses the implementation of post grouted drilled shafts from design to completion of construction. A design procedure for post grouted drilled shafts developed by the University of South Florida was used for initial VECP evaluation. Prior to construction, two instrumented test shafts were installed and load tested, one of which was post grouted. Therein, the design procedure was calibrated, tip elevations for production shafts were refined, drilled shaft construction and grouting procedures were demonstrated, and a grouting criteria was developed for the project.

The last 25 years have seen rapid expansion in the use of helical screw pile foundations and tiebacks for new and retrofit construction of buildings and earth retention structures. An estimated $100 million was spent in 2002 on helical foundations and tiebacks in the United States alone. While design information is available in the literature, information regarding quality control, inspection and performance monitoring is lacking. Recognition of at least one manufacturer's helical foundation material by the Uniform Building Code, Standard Building Code, and BOCA (all three codes now combined into the ICC International Building Code) has given added urgency to the dissemination of reliable and practical quality control, inspection and performance monitoring procedures. This paper describes a set of such procedures that have been followed for 17 years by engineers experienced in the industry who have directly installed or been involved in the installation of over 140,000 helical foundations and tiebacks in divers soil conditions for various types of structures, including earth retention structures. Topics covered include design responsibility, building code listings and requirements, manufacturer ISO certification, manufacturing process, material and installation specifications, installation contractor certification, field placement, installation procedures, field inspection, building code inspection and performance monitoring. The paper concludes with a step by step example of practical quality control, inspection and performance monitoring procedures on a typical helical foundation project.

During recent years there has been a marked increase in the use of explosives in Queensland coal mines. Delay detonators have been introduced and their use has extended with the wider application of mechanised methods of mining.The need for careful study of the characteristics of delay detonators is stressed so that the advantages of simultaneous firing, from the points of view of safety and efficiency, may be obtained. With their use new potential hazards are introduced. These hazardsare considered and means whereby the overall safety may be improved are discussed.The increase in the number of misfires since the introduction of delay detonators is shown and the examination of misfired detonators is described. Australia has a long history of underground mining. Even withadvances in open cut mining equipment, techniques andeconomics, many orebodies are still best mined by undergroundmeans. In addition, modern exploration tools are æuncoveringÆorebodies that are at increasing depths. South African mines arecurrently producing from below 3 km, and developing down to5 km depths û it is likely that Australian mines will also becomemuch deeper over the next 20 years. One of the most significanttechnical challenges in deep mines is the problem of heat.Community expectations and legislated standards continue todrive operations towards improving the working conditions inmines. The hazards and costs associated with chronic hotworking conditions (heat illness, poor safety, poor productivity,higher operating costs and poor morale) are also becomingincreasingly recognised (Brake, Donoghue and Bates, 1998). Theexposure of miners to many other occupational hazards has beenreduced over the past 50 years. However, despite air-conditionedcabins greatly reducing the heat stress on mobile plant operators,there are still many Australian mine workers subject to levels ofthermal stress that existed a century ago. There are severalreasons for this, including a frequently-poor understanding of thephysiology of working in heat by mine management, no agreedmining code of practice for working in heat, the lack of a robust,practical-sized instrument to measure heat stress, the costpressures on the industry and, to some extent, deep-seatedtraditional management and worker practices. Howeversignificant progress has been made in many of these areas (Brakeand Bates, in press), with the net result that there is likely to be a trend towards installation of refrigeration of some form in manyAustralian mines in the future. This will add directly to the costof operation, but will also have direct and indirect benefits,including cost benefits. It should also be noted that Australia isnot at the forefront of adopting practices to manage temperaturesin the workplace: South African metal mines usually haverefrigerated cooling, and Canadian mines spend large sums onheating, with heating costs (averaged over a full year) of up to$A1 per tonne mined (Bandopadhyay et al, 1997). The history of mine refrigeration dates back to 1919 when thefirst plant was installed at Morro Velho, Brazil. By 1965, the totalinstalled capacity (worldwide) reached about 100 MW(R)i. Since 1965 the growth in mine refrigeration capacity has beenexponential, with a doubling every six or seven years (Howes andNixon, 1997). South Africa is by far the largest user of minerefrigeration, with over 300 refrigeration machines installed. This paper discusses the key design issues associated with theapplication of refrigeration in underground metal or coal mines.Whilst the emphasis is on large, surface plants, small, surface orunderground refrigeration plants can also be very effective in thecorrect application and many of the principles of design andoperation are the same.

An extensive laboratory grinding study was carried out on a magnetite ore in order to assess the grinding behaviour of magnetic concentrate and tail from low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS).The test work involved Bond ball mill testing, rod milling, low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS), and batch ball milling down to product sizes of around P80~25 microns. A total of 18 Bond tests and over 150 batch grinding tests and sieve sizing were carried out. Throughout the grinding tests, power draw was continuously monitored. The relationship between the grinding energy and product size was analysed using the conventional energy-size concepts. It was found that the Rittinger equation fits the experimental data well. However, Bond?s equation does not fit the experimental data well, and therefore a modified Bond equation was developed. Differences in grinding properties between the magnetic and non-magnetic component were analysed and compared to the bulk ore. It was found that grinding properties differ significantly and therefore separate grinding test work may be required for each grinding step in the magnetite ore beneficiation flowsheet. "The smoke nuisance, like many other undesirable and longstanding features in our present civilization, is still with us. On reviewing the situation we are astonished to find no authentic record of a major smoke-abatement campaign that has succeeded in eliminating a smoke nuisance, in spite of the fact that the problem has been with us since the use of bituminous coal began. We might well ask ourselves where the trouble lies; is the problem impossible of solution? We can not blame the average citizen for harboring this thought as a conviction. He has been urged for so long but sees so little evidence of progress. He has repeatedly been assured by the scientist and the engineer in most convincing terms that smoke. is unnecessary, that it can be avoided; small wonder is it that he is beginning to distrust so-called authority on the subject.On the other hand, the scientist and engineer are entirely within their rights. We all know that even high-volatile coal can be and is now being burned with no visible smoke. We know that even small domestic heating furnaces, with favorable conditions and with proper care, can be fired by hand without producing much smoke. And we know that when such equipment is fitted with suitable stoking devices, little or no smoke results. What, then, is the answer?Perhaps we may learn something from a critical examination of a typical smoke-abatement problem. Probably one of the most enlightening campaigns that has been waged in the United States is that of Salt Lake City, Utah; therefore, the purpose of this paper is to discuss the important aspects of this particular case."

This paper presents a case history of an engineered, monitored, and tested program that provided an effective and satisfactory basis for the completion of pile foundations for Twin Dolphins 1 at La Peninsula Condominiums located in the Isles of Capri in southwest Florida, U.S.A. An 8-story building (withl-story parking underneath) along with recreational facilities (such as a swimming pool and tennis courts) had been planned for final construction. Following an evaluation of various foundation alternatives, a precast prestressed concrete (PPC) pile-supported system was selected. The building foundations were designed for pile capacities of 445kN (50 tons) and 890kN (100 tons) in compression and 133kN (15 tons) in uplift. A test pile program was performed to provide site-specific pile driving data, verify design assumptions, determine production pile lengths, and evaluate pile driving criteria. A total of 24, 356 mm (14-in.) square, 19.8 m (65 ft) PPC concrete piles were driven and dynamically load tested utilizing a Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) within the building limits. Dynamic monitoring during probe pile installation and restriking was performed to estimate the ultimate capacity of the piles and to evaluate driving stresses during installation. CAPWAP analyses were preformed on PDA data to better estimate pile capacity, resistance distribution, and predict pile freeze (increase in pile resistance with time) and thus optimized the production pile lengths. Upon completion of probe pile installation, 12 of the probe piles were tested using the Pile Echo Tester (PET) function of the Pile Integrity Sonic Analyzer (PISA). PET testing was performed to evaluate the integrity of piles which had exhibited high driving stresses during PDA testing. Information gathered during the probe pile driving program was effectively utilized as part of the overall quality control program to install a total of 539 PPC piles (including 24 probe piles) within the building limits at the project site to depths ranging from 9.1 to 19.8 m (30 to 65 ft) below the existing ground elevation as part of the foundation support system. Prior to installation of probe or production piles, a termination criterion was established using 1-dimensional wave equation analyses in addition to the design pile embedment requirement. The predicted pile capacities compared very well with the capacities from the CAPWAP analysis for probe piles. Use of geotechnical instrumentation and PDA assisted technology enabled each foundation support element to be constructed to its optimum capacity and at optimum cost. Furthermore, by using PDA the consultant was able to quantify a difficult to measure geotechnical phenomenon termed "pile freeze" which eliminated costly overdriving and unnecessary splicing of piles.

A research effort has been undertaken, under Workplace Safety and Insurance Board of Ontario (WSIB) sponsorship, to characterize the support capabilities of conventional and innovative spray-on lining materials for mitigating dynamic failure effects created by simulated rockbursts. Conventional spray support media, such as shotcrete and fibrecrete linings, and a variety of new spray-on lining materials [thin, spray-on liners (TSLs)], typically polymer-type thin coatings, were subjected to simulated rockburst influence. For baseline comparison, conventional rockbolt and bolt-and-mesh support products were also evaluated. Observation of lining performance was undertaken through completion of field-scale support and rock detonation trials. Controlled blasting tests were conducted at the Queen’s University Explosives Laboratory to examine the effectiveness of the variety of surface coating agents for modifying dynamic rock spalling processes. All tests were performed upon largely undisturbed and homogeneous rock materials in highly repeatable fashion. All blasts were observed seismically and photographically to provide detailed information concerning rock motion, surface fracturing, ejected fragment motion and support liner survivability characteristics. These material comparison trials were performed to assess the relative effectiveness of a wide range of currently available area support techniques for suppressing hazards associated with dynamic rock ejection. The results of this study validate that thin, spray-on linings may be equally as effective, and often better, than conventional support materials at mitigating rockburst or like damage in highly stressed mine environments.
