All aspects of precious metals processing were featured at a symposium held Oct. 3-6, 2007, at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson, AZ. Although billed as "Precious Metals Processing: Advances in Primary and Secondary Operations," the symposium also looked at economic, regulatory and environmental issues affecting the precious metals industry. The symposium was sponsored by SME; The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS); and the International Precious Metals Institute (IPMI). It included workshops, technical presentations, guest speakers and social activities. Mining industry management, process engineers, equipment manufacturers, consultants, metals marketers, academics and others involved in the precious metals industry attended the conference. Needless to say, with gold nearing $25.721g ($800/oz) and platinum pushing $41.801g ($1,300/oz) at the time of the meeting, the mood among the attendees could not have been more positive. The symposium was privileged to have Father Ernest S. Sweeney, professor of Latin American History at Loyola Marymount University, as a guest speaker. Sweeney, a Jesuit priest, provided a colorful account of the history of mining in Arizona and the surrounding region of North America (Fig. 1). He described the importance of the mining industry and said, "To go down into the bowels of the earth to extract its riches for the benefit of all of us is an awesome task deserving our sincere respect and gratitude." However, he warned the industry that: "The ever increasing de¬mands on the mining community for the protection of the environment calls for endless efforts to maintain ethical standards in a business filled with risk, uncertainty and frustrations." Sweeney noted that the Spanish conquest of the Americas was driven by the three fundamental motives of "God, glory and gold." He noted that gold was the basic, most powerful driving force of the conquest and occupation of the Spanish empire. The first European to explore Arizona was the Franciscan missionary Marcos de Niza. He came to Arizona in 1539 in search of the fabled Seven Golden Cities of Cíbola. Sweeny noted that Spanish explorers were consumed, as Cortes himself described it, "with a burning fever that only gold could cure." Sweeney told the story of some of these early explorers, including Francisco Vázquez de Coronado who "mounted an expedition in pursuit of gold and rich empires to conquer." Coronado passed through Arizona and discovered the Grand Canyon. "Coronado returned to Mexico exhausted, bankrupt and disillusioned, but with a wealth of new knowledge of the borderlands of the Spanish empire," said Sweeney. He then described the colorful history of early gold, silver and copper exploration and mining in Arizona, including the famous tale of the Lost Dutchman's Mine. "For mining operations globally, the scale and criticality of the grinding mill drive has meant that selection of the correct mill drive technology is paramount. With so much depending on the successful implementation of the electrical drive system— safety operation, timely installation, availability, energy efficiency, minimum maintenance and extend its use as tool to assist during mill liner exchange—customers are justified in their scrutiny and slow adoption of new drive technology. From the first installation of low, fixed speed synchronous motors to the introduction of the current source and further voltage source variable frequency drive, innovations require long periods of time and mining customers willing to push the industry forward. In recent years, the variable frequency drive has been the stepping stone for a new generation of mill drive technology. In use for decades in other heavy industrial applications, the drives allow for system optimization in a myriad of ways. The most dramatic of changes is in the design of the motor. Where in the past motor design was bound by line frequency, today the designer can optimize machine size and, more importantly, eliminate the need entirely for the synchronous motor. Induction motor design has now progressed to the point where low speed operation is possible at efficiency levels nearing those of the synchronous design. Moreover, the simplicity of the squirrel cage design means that availability, reliability and spare part requirements are greatly improved. As the next step in the evolution of large pinion driven grinding mills, the low speed induction drive offers a new reliable and robust system to the market.IntroductionAs deposit grades continue to decline, new ways of processing ever greater concentrator throughputs have been required to maintain throughput efficient and profitable operations. Furthermore, the high risk nature of mining developments requires a constant search for safer, higher availability and more efficient equipment design. Limitation of downtime is a key factor in ensuring mining operations can be sustained through volatile market conditions. Often processing the entire mine throughput through just 1 or 2 lines, the crushing and grinding circuits are of particular criticality to the uptime and, thus, profitability of any mining operation."

For many years, sulfuric acid producers all over the world have been forced to meet ever more strict environmental regulations to reduce SO2 emissions. The sulfuric acid industry has implemented new solutions in order to comply with the new lower SO2 emissions target. Haldor Topsoe (Topsoe) has responded to this challenge by continuously improving the range of VK sulfuric acid catalysts and providing tailor-made catalyst solutions to meet the demands of the sulfuric acid producers for lower SO2 emissions. Reducing emissions through catalysis: requires less capital than installing a scrubber, requires no additional process chemicals, generates no waste or by-product to dispose of. In 1996 Topsoe introduced VK69, a cesium-promoted vanadium catalyst, designed for operation in the pass(es) after the intermediate absorption tower in double absorption plants. The high activity of VK69 allows for a more than 50% reduction in SO2 emissions from existing double-absorption plants. Topsoe currently has more than 110 installations of VK69. To comply with the still more stringent regulations being placed on the sulfuric acid industry to lower SO2 emissions, Topsoe has developed a new sulfuric acid catalyst designated VK-701 LEAP5™. This catalyst was introduced to the market in 2010. VK-701 LEAP5™ is based on a novel technology which circumvents the internal transport deficiencies of existing commercial sulfuric acid catalysts and thereby offers exceptionally high activity in strong, SO3 rich gases. Sulfuric acid plants have used this catalyst to meet emissions requirements lower than previously believed possible with a catalyst only solution. This paper will present examples on how to reduce emissions by implementing a tailor-made catalyst solution using VK69 and VK-701 LEAP5™.

Por ello, el presente trabajo, describe los efectos de esta expansión de la explotación minera a través de la Unidad Minera Antapaccay que utiliza las instalaciones de Tintaya, manteniendo los planes de inversión social y el desarrollo económico local y regional.

For Fe-Mn alloy production, two reactions are responsible for this process: the MnO reduction in the slag and the carbon dissolution in the bath. The smelting-reduction process has been studied as alternative route to be used to produce alloy so as steel. This technical paper presents some initial studies to be used to determine the main ways that one can have for the mechanisms for this reaction. The limited factors like mass transport or chemical reaction were analysed. The Mn content in the bath were varied and it was concluded that by increasing the former, dissolution of Mn into the bath was increased, so as a reduction of MnO in the slag. For carbon dissolution, it was used a experiment with a stationary bar, this one was added into the bath, after ten minutes probes were catched, by temperature 1600¦C, for the dissolution of MnO, one graphite crucible was employed, after 45 min the slag and alloy were analysed. After the experimental part, some curves were plotted against time, based on these graphics, and kinetic analysis was made.

The properties of some heavy liquids which can be used in sink-float separations are discussed with major emphasis being given to the halogenated hydrocarbons. Data are presented on density, viscosity, thermal characteristics and the effects of moisture and temperature on the corrosiveness of the liquids towards various materials of construction. The toxicity of these materials, the hazards involved in handling them, and the procedures for handling them safely are also discussed. True liquids have certain advantages over colloidal suspensions for sink-float separation of minerals which makes their use especially advantageous when close separations, fine particle sizes or water-soluble minerals are to be treated. For best separating results, the medium should have an easily controlled, uniform, stable density. Here, true liquids have the advantages of allowing closer control of density and of not requiring agitation to maintain a uniform den- sity in the equipment. Low viscosities are desired in a separating liquid so that rapid separations of fine material can be made. Many liquids have lower viscosities than the colloidal suspensions at operating gravities of 1.4 to 5.0. For economic reasons and to prevent contamination of the product, the separating medium must be easily and completely removed from the ore. Normally, true liquids must be more completely removed than the cheaper suspensions and thus cause more problems in this area. The fact that the medium should not react with the minerals, air, water or the common materials of construction limits the choice of liquids which can be used, but many are available which are sufficiently stable. A more serious objection to the use of true liquids is that many of them present a toxic hazard to operating personnel and users of the product. Most true liquids are toxic to some extent, but modem knowledge of toxicity allows us to recognize the hazards inherent in handling them and enables us to design around them. Three types of true liquids are available for this use: 1) Halogenated hydrocarbons cover the gravity range from 1.2 to 3.3. They are generally more volatile and less viscous than the other liquids.

Experimental animal studies comparing asbestos and non-asbestos varieties of tremolite indicate tremolite asbestos is markedly more carcinogenic. By direct analogy, the differences in carcinogenicity between tremolite asbestos and non-asbestos prismatic tremolite should be the same for the other types of amphibole that also crystallize in the asbestos and non-asbestos habits. The earliest of the experiment animal studies, done more than 25 years ago, have design limitations by modern standards including the use of injection or surgical implantation as the route of administration rather than the more relevant route of inhalation. However, the differences in the carcinogenicity of amphibole asbestos and non-asbestos amphiboles are sufficiently large to be clearly discernable even with the study limitations. Together with later studies on these and related minerals, there is strong evidence of a much lower hazard associated with the shorter, thicker fibers of the non-asbestos amphiboles, than is found for the asbestos analogues of the same mineral. It is possible that the non-asbestos amphiboles are no more hazardous than other silicate minerals widely considered nuisance dusts. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. The reduction of geological risk for planning of high production longwall faces is essential. Geological and geophysical techniques applied at Huntly West Mine before 1989 were unable to reduce the geological risk to an acceptable level. The success of a trial long-hole directional drilling programme at Huntly West Mine (Fowke et al, 1989) has encouraged the Coal Corporation of New Zealand to use the technology long-term, for seam definition. Initial drilling in 1989 completed a total of 3543 metres, with the longest borehole length being 369 metres (limited by number of rods available). A major re-interpretation of seam structure resulted from the drilling, which was able to fill in seam details between surface exploration boreholes. The undulating thick seam conditions at the mine require a refinement of drilling strategies used overseas. Long-hole directional drilling also displays potential for inseam gas drainage. Gas flows of the order of 1000 L/min were initially indicated in individual boreholes. Other gas parameters of the seam have been studied by Beamish et al (1991), and highlight the significance of the natural gas resource in the Huntly Coalfield.   The continued development of drilling technology will be of major benefit sustainable development, particularly in policy.

THE Bureau of Mines has received many requests for Information concerning the methods its laboratories use for analyzing coal and coke and determining their heating value. The fuel investigations now conducted by the Bureau of Mines are an outgrowth of the work undertaken at the Government coal-testing plant erected in 1904 at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, and the methods for proximate and ultimate analysis of coal used by the Bureau of Mines are based on those originally adopted by the chemists of the coal-testing plant and followed in the subsequent chemical work of the Government fuel-testing plants at St. Louis, Mo., Norfolk, Va., and Pittsburgh, Pa. The many valuable suggestions and criticisms received from N. W. Lord, director of the School of Mines, and from E. E. Somermeier, professor of metallurgy, of Ohio State University, at that time, are greatly appreciated; development of many of the methods for the proximate and ultimate analysis of coal now used by the Bureau of Mines is chiefly clue to these men.

Jet grouting was first introduced into North America in the late 1970's, soon after the conception of the system in Japan. However, it was not until the mid-1980's that the technique began to gain acceptance through the renewed interest and efforts of specialist U.S. geotechnical contractors. Since this time, innovations by both American users and other users worldwide have further advanced the technology, with a corresponding increase in the range of practical applications. This paper discusses the evolution of jet grouting in North America, from simple single-fluid methods to more complex triple-fluid methods, to the energy-intensive double-fluid and SuperJet methods. Case histories, illustrating a variety of jet grouting methods and applications, are cited to support the newest United States applications.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's Wheaton Station and tunnel design was completed and offered for bid in the Spring of 1983. The format was unique to the Authority: a four part, four fiscal year contract developed in response to funding limitations with construction divided into four stages allowing the maximum amount of work to be done each year for the funds available. The bid was based on the entire contract, but was orginally awarded for only the first year's work. Each year's work had a maximum funding limitation thus safe guarding the Authority from a grossly unbalanced bid. The Authority's estimate for this work was $83,871,524. The low bid came in at 61% of this for a total low bid of $51,512,058. The low bidder was ILBAU America Corporation whose home offices are in Austria. Following receipt of the bids (and resolution of objections cited by other bidders who felt that the job could not be done for the $51 Million dollar figure), a Notice-To-Proceed was given on October 5, 1983. The construction contract allows a Value Engineering Change Proposal, called a VECP which is initiated and developed by the contractor to change the drawings, specifications or other requirements of the contract. Among other things the VECP should decrease the contract price while maintaining the service life, reliability, ease of maintenance, and standardized features and appearance and not require an unacceptable extension of the contract time. "IntroductionThe SABREX Blast Modelling Program was developed jointly by the companies of the ICI Explosives Group, of which C-I-L Inc. is a member. SABREX (Scientific Approach to Breaking Rock with Explosives) is a modular computer program which incorporates new technology with a number of tested programs that have been in use world wide.SABREX predicts the performance of blasts in terms of (I) fragment size and distribution; (2) muckpile profile and face velocity; (3) grade fracture; (4) collar breakage; (5) a rupture envelope which depicts crack penetration behind and beneath blastholes; and (6) a complete cost analysis including explosives, drilling and accessory costs. The predicted blast results are displayed as dynamic colour graphics and in tabular form.SABREX uses data on the detailed geometry of the drilled and loaded pattern, detonation characteristics of the explosives and the dynamic properties of the rock to generate blast predictions. SABREX blasting calculations take into account the effects that shock and quasi-static pressures exert on the rock around the blastholes. While physical effects occur very rapidly in rock blasting, it is possible to view and model the sequence of events as discrete sections.The program can be run on a microcomputer and is currently operated by C-I-L technical service staff in Canada for the use of drilling and blasting operators.Figure I is a diagram representing the modules of the program and associated technology that is used to complement the program.Any, or all, of the modules may be used in a particular study or blast optimization. Because the BOBCAT module of the SABREX program has been described in previous papers(7.8.9), this discussion will concentrate on the newer modules: CRACK, HEAVE, RUPTURE ENVELOPE and to a limited extent, KUZ-RAM, which present a more detailed picture of the blasting process.Each of these modules is discussed in terms of the information they offer the operator in analyzing the blast. Specific examples of recent usage in Canadian mining situations are included to illustrate the ability of the model to produce practical results that can assist in optimizing actual blasting operations or solving problems that do exist."

Copper ores are widespread through the Lachlan Geosyncline in New South Wales, but the size of the orebodies is generally small. The largest deposits occur in the Cobar district where an iron-rich copper ore type has been developed in Silurian sediments. Similar de- . posits to the south in the Nymagee-Mt. Hope-Melrose districts are related to quartz feldspar porphyries of probable Upper Silurian age. Deposits to the east in the Tottenham-Girilambone districts are less complex mineralogically and are possibly related to an ultra-basic source.Copper mineralization in the Highlands further to the east is often developed in Ordovician andesite or MiddleUpper Silurian acid volcanic sequences. The deposits in andesite contain considerably less galena than those in the acid extrusives; a small proportion of the mineralization in the latter has texture, mineralogy, and geologic setting analogous to the Captain's Flat copper-Iead-zinc deposit, for which both syngenetic and epigenetic origins have been proposed. Very little copper mineralization occurs within granitic material, even though rocks of this type ranging from Silurian to Carboniferous in age crop out through much of the geosyncline, and the extent of the metal contribution from plutons to the deposits in volcanics is open to question. Numerous deposits are known in the contact zone around Mid-Devonian and Mid-Carboniferous granites, however, and the formation of these orebodies has undoubtedly been influenced by plutonic activity. Small occurrences of copper with associated minor nickel sulphides are developed in a narrow serpentinite belt of possible Lower-Middle Devonian age in the southern section of the Highlands.

In 1953, Dr. N. H. Fisher of the Bureau of Mineral Resources, acting on behalf of the Society of Economic Geologists, which is considering the sponsoring of a uniform system of nomenclature for ore reserves, enquired from the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy whether it had ever considered this subject and particularly whether it had ever set up any standard definitions or specifications with regard to ore reserves.As this had not been done, but was thought to be desirable, the Council of the Institute appointed a Committee consisting of H. H. Dunkin, Associate, Professor of Mining Engineering, University of Melbourne (Convenor), E. A. Rudd, Professor of Economic Geology, University of Adelaide, I. N. Campbell, Chief Geologist of Western Mining Corporation; and the writer to consider and report on this supject.In December 1953, the Committee submitted its first report to the council and this report (reproduced here as an Appendix) was widely circulated among member companies, and engineers, with an invitation to comment on the proposal. A large number of, replies was received and studied.After studying the replies the Committee issued a second report in part as follows:-From these replies we have learned that the suggestions made in the first teport of the Committee are unacceptable to most of those interested, on one or all, of the following grounds;-(a) number of categories,(b) definition of categories;(c) nomenclature.

Underground Mine Drainage may be conveniently divided into two operations:(a) Collecting and transporting drainage water to the pump eastern.(b) Elevating water to the surfacc by pumping.This short paper describes a system which automatically performs operation "a" and which has been developed on the South mine at Broken Hill, under the supervision of the mine foreman, Mr. F. McDonell. The contour method can be used to estimate the mineral resources of a mineralized body. It relies on geological interpretation and allows the geologist to determine the plunge of a mineralized ore shoot along the dipping plane of the mineralized body. The technique is best applied to estimate tonnage and average grade of relatively planar bodies, i.e., where the two dimensions of the mineralized body are much greater than the third dimension, such as Archean lode gold vein deposits or mantos of massive sulphide mineralization, based on exploration drilling. For these types of deposits, the contour method can provide a clear view of the “mineralization landscape” with “peaks” and “valleys” along the plane of the mineralized vein. The technique also reduces the “nugget effect” of local high values commonly present in gold deposits. With sufficient drill hole information, the contour method may be used to estimate the tonnage and average grade of individual blocks within a mineral deposit. General procedures for the contour method are described in this paper, along with examples and explanatory notes.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is not just a catch-cry. It is an essential component of every-day life in many professions, including accountancy, law and public administration. Without realising it, many other professions are undertaking CPD activities in an un-structured way, including mining, metallurgy and geology. Examples include Annual and technical conferences of The Institute, Branch-level technical meetings and in-company training and development programmes and technical exchanges. Whilst approaches to date have undoubtedly helped keep the Australian mining industry at the forefront of mining technology, one cannot presume that technological development will stand still. To meet this challenge, human resource development must keep pace, not only to optimize utilization of technological developments, but more importantly to develop firm bases from which new products, processes and technologies can be developed within Australia.
