WHEN gold was discovered in California, and San Francisco grew almost over night from a handful of people to many thousands, one of the first difficulties experienced was the lack of money. Gold dust in considerable quantities was rushed into the city from the various mining camps but there was no money. Purchases were paid for by weighing out dust in hand scales. We can appreciate' the difficulty of paying for a drink or buying a postage stamp under these conditions. All this gold was in the form of dust from placer workings and the first metallurgists were the assayers' who melted and refined this gold, casting it into bars which were weighed, assayed, stamped with fineness; value, and the name of the assayer. Many .of these plants were of considerable size, handling shipments that were accumulated by banks and express companies throughout the "Diggings" and sent to San Francisco to be shipped by water to the eastern states. WHILE mining engineers have been searching in far corners of the country and of the world for hidden wealth there has grown up around us in nearly every city great wealth-producing mines calling for the investment of hundreds of millions of dollars and yielding products now sold for over half a billion dollars yearly-largely unknown and almost wholly neglected by mining engineers. But this neglect is explainable and excusable. They are industries of very recent origin-practically the growth of the last 25 years. They are in a very large measure the result of tremendous developments in engineering construction and the rapidly expanding use of portland cement concrete for structures of every description. Concrete as a material of construction is going through an evolution very much as did cast iron and other metals used in engineering; and this phase of the industry should appeal to the imagination of metallurgical engineers. At first iron was iron-a material of uncertain properties, owing both to small differences in chemical composition and in methods of manufacture. By successive steps iron was studied and knowledge of its properties developed-the striking effects of very small percentages of other minerals and of various heat-treatments.

Over the past half-century, researchers have commented on the complexities of ion-exchange processes, but have been forced to use gross assumptions to simplify the associated mathematics sufficiently for mathematical models to be of practical use, given the available computational power. This paper reviews the development of increasingly complex models as computational power has increased over the past half-century, from the direct application of Fick's Law in 1947, through to today's models requiring finiteelement methods. The assumptions required for and the associated limitations of the various models are presented and the associated computational complexities are discussed. A case study is presented in which a continuous loss of capacity in an acid resin was observed over about sixty cycles of loading and elution. Resin poisoning does not explain this observation. This paper presents the capacity loss data, speculates on possible causes of the phenomenon, discusses why conventional kinetic and equilibrium mechanisms cannot explain it and concludes that the need to develop a more rigorous model is apparent. The significance of this observation is that standard tests done for a new resin application could significantly overestimate the commercial performance of the resin concerned, highlighting the importance of computer simulation in this field of process engineering.

From the initial planning phases to the closing of a mine, mining is an industry where high attention, care, and sensitivity are needed in every step of the mine life. Since mining projects have a long-life span, exceeding a decade sometimes, managing a whole mine project is challenging, especially when challenges faced due to generational differences are considered, such as tracking and logging data, or the usage of different engineering solutions change over time. Along with the overall hardship caused by the time put into a mining project, the present-time operations are very costly where each minute counts. In present-time operations, every decision made, and every minute used during planning and operations has an impact on the efficiency, safety, and economics of the project. Having extremely harsh conditions in both the excavation and mineral processing operations not only slows down the processes but creates very dangerous environments that need to be handled with precise safety measurements. To support the already established processes, we could implement new technologies and use them to our advantage. Virtual reality (VR) is one of these technologies that we could implement in the mining industry. VR is a technology that emerged in the 1960s creating virtual environments and platforms. The user experiences these virtual environments from head- mounted headsets to rooms with 360 screens, all with different levels of immersion. These higher levels of immersion, create a higher level of presencemaking the users more engaged in the activity they are trying to accomplish. These two factors of immersion and presence are what make VR unique and beneficial. VR has some applications and case studies in the industry along with some research being conducted in universities. Unfortunately, there has not been a comprehensive literature review or analysis regarding only VR and its implementations for the mining industry in the last 5 years. This paper aims to describe what VR is and its relation to the mining industry, in the most recent years. The paper first gives a brief background on what VR is and its key concepts. Secondly, it will give information on how the initial stages of the literature review were conducted and the findings along with discussions. The paper will finish with the conclusion drawn from the discussion and potential future work.

CONTINUED expansion of gold mining in 1935 led to further developments in treatment methods. In base metals and non-metallics progress is also noted, coincident with greater activity. Statistics are not available yet for 1935 but the trend is shown by 1934 when nonferrous ore mined in the United States was 35,840,737 tons, or 45 per cent more than in 1933. The amount concentrated was 27,167,530 tons or 75.80 per cent of the ore mined, and flotation was used in whole or part on over 96 per cent of the ore subjected to concentration. In the crushing field a new model of the Fahrenwald crusher is promised soon. The Symons fine-reduction cone crusher and Traylor secondary crusher continue to gain as intermediate crushers. A new book entitled "Crushers for Stone and Ore" by William T. W. Miller appeared. Reference should be made to the Index.A Brief History of Royalties1In the early days of mining in Canada, the tendency was to sell a claim for cash and to move on, using the stake to look for and stake more prospects. As prospectors became more sophisticated and Canada’s North opened up, the market for properties and the number of mining properties available increased dramatically. Speculation and the practice of consolidating several small properties into one large holding entity became common. In “hot” areas, the speculators2 could far outnumber the prospectors, many of the former having little or no prospecting expertise but lots of market and promotional savvy. However, to consolidate a number of small parcels into one large project can be expensive, and many of the parcel owners became interested in keeping a share in the project, rather than giving up everything. Speculators who were trying to consolidate small parcels wanted to minimize cash payments to parcel holders (usually they did not have much cash and preferred it flowing in their direction rather than away from them). Accordingly, non-cash transactions were developed to meet the aspirations of both owners and speculators."

? THE man is always greater than his work.? The training of the men who are to develop the mineral resources of the world is the most important problem connected with mining engineering. It becomes ever more important to civilization as the mineral wealth of the earth approaches exhaustion. I have therefore decided to consider a few of the more important problems arising in the training of the mining engineer, and especially those arising in America. THE PECULIAR NATURE OF MINERAL WEALTH. Mining and Agriculture are the two fundamental arts. Without the latter our existence would be precarious; without the former, our civilization impossible. Agriculture furnishes that regular supply of food and raiment which leads to the growth of large communities in which cultivated leisure first becomes possible; while raining furnishes the metallic thread from which is woven that complex fabric we call civilization. But in these two arts the conditions for success are widely different. Most of the crops that the farmer reaps may be harvested year after year, and the proper fertilizers being added, he may continue the annual harvest indefinitely, while, as a result of cultivation, his farm becomes yearly more valuable. But the crop the miner reaps can be harvested but once in the history of the race. Our mineral wealth has taken unknown ages to mature in the bosom of the earth. Effects of a mechnochemical treatment to oxide Ni ores have been investigated to enhance the extractive ratio of Ni from them in acid leaching process. High intensity grinding by a planetary boll mill showed strong effect to enhance the extractive ratio of Ni, for example , 10% of extractive ratio of Ni in sulfuric acid leaching(0.05mo1/1,at room temperature) increased to more than 90% with 60min. of planetary boll milling. Effects of additives(sulfur and some oxidants) on the mechnochemical treatment have also studied. Sulfur showed almost no effect to enhance the total Ni extractive ratio but increases the selectivity of Ni extraction. More than a half of Ni could be extracted by water when Ni ore was grinded at addition of Na2S207 in the milling treatment. Some effects of mechnocemical treatments to Ni ore are summarized in this paper.

Since the introduction of water cooled test rings the operation of cupelling retort bullion has not alone been sImplified, but has also been the means of concentrating the bullion for the fining test in a much shorter time.The first water cooled test ring which I used was rectangular in shape, inside dimensions 5 ft. 3 in. x 2 ft. IQ in., and made of i in. mild steel plates, with a water space of 9i in. x 3t in. However, it was found that as soon as the filling commenced to wear and the litharge came in contact with the jacket, the plate was gradually affected on the lines of the wash, caused by the blast. After a while the inside steel plate went beyond the factor of safety, and was then substituted on the sides and the front of the test ring by a tin copper plate, which has stood now for the last five years without showing the least signs of wear or leakage.The test remains in use as long as the bottom is regarded as safe, and toward the end of the life of the test the litharge is allowed to work against the copper plate.

The major purpose of this bulletin, as indicated in the preface by Dr. John W. Finch, Director of the Bureau of Mines, is to give a critical review of the coal-mining methods used in the principal producing countries of Europe, to describe the reasons underlying the adoption of these methods, and to contrast them with coal-mining methods employed in the United States. The report includes discussions of various subjects intimately related to coal mining, such as geology of the principal coal fields; production and resources of the several countries; mine safety and health research; Government mining regulations; mine inspection and rescue procedure; safety lamps; fixed lighting methods under-ground; testing electric motors, mining machines, and mining explosives for permissibility; and special mining hazards, such as explosions of gas and coal dust, mine fires, instantaneous gas outbursts, ground movement and surface subsidence, and bumps. Commercial, economic, and labor problems of European coal mining, including miners' output, wages, and social-insurance schemes, as well as cost of mining, prices of coal, etc., are briefly described. It will be noted that data on most subjects are not given for Russia, which has become an important coal-producing country, owing to the lack of reliable published information concerning Russian coal mining.

"INTRODUCTION The mines in the eastern part of the now active region of the Tri-State zinc district of Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma have unusually acid water, which during periods of moderate or no rainfall is used in the mills to replace losses from evaporation, seepage, and tailings disposal. Its use has caused difficulties by corrosion of equipment and by interference with flotation.The growing importance of flotation, which requires good water, and the increasing troubles caused by the corrosion of the milling equipment have prompted the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Mo., to investigate the action of the waters on flotation and to undertake to develop means of obviating their harmful effects.The work was under the immediate direction of W. T. Schrenk, consulting chemist, United States Bureau of Mines, and professor of chemistry, Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, and Will H. Coghill, supervising engineer of the ore dressing section of the United States Bureau of Mines.ORIGIN OF ACID MINE WATERSRain water, carrying oxygen and carbon dioxide in solution, finds its way into the pores and crevices of the earth's crust and percolates downward through the rocks. This water and its dissolved gases exert a solvent action on many minerals, the extent of which depends upon the nature of the associated minerals.The iron sulphides are the chief sources of the 'trouble with sulphates and sulphuric acid because they oxidize so freely and contain more sulphur than is required to satisfy the iron when ferrous sulphate is formed. The U.S. economy continued to expand during 1986, although at the slowest pace since 1982 when the current business expansion began. Real gross national product (GNP) grew about 2.6%, slightly below 1985 growth but significantly below that of 1984. The continuing expansion was fueled predominantly by rising personal consumption expenditures as well as growing government purchases of goods and services. Fixed investment, although positive, failed to grow at the rate of the overall economy. The trade deficit, which increased more than 30% over the record 1985 level, continued to depress economic growth despite significant declines in the price of petroleum and the value of the dollar. On a more positive note, domestic employment continued to grow--increasing over 2 million from the 1985 level--and inflation and interest rates declined. The unemployment rate dropped slightly to 7.0%. Of direct importance to the minerals-producing industries, expenditures for consumer and producer durables as well as investment in residential construction each grew faster than the overall economy, but investment in nonresidential structures fell more than 10% from the 1985 level. The low level of real capital spending declined about 3% in 1986, following strong gains in 1985 and in 1984. Capital expenditures for new plant and equipment bottomed out in the second quarter and expanded in the third and fourth quarters. The decline in the first half of the year was partially attributed to uncertainty arising from the then-proposed tax bill. Also, there was little impetus for corporations to invest in new capacity since factories were operating at less than 80% of capacity during most of the year, in part because of continued competition from imports.

"In 2015, the estimated value of nonfuel mineral production in the United States decreased by 3 percent from that in 2014 (Table 1), mainly as a result of decreased metal and metallic mineral prices, especially iron ore, copper and precious metals. Lower metal prices were attributed to decreased consumption, especially in China and increased global inventories. Several U.S. metal mines were idled in 2015, including the only U.S. rare earths mine at Mountain Pass, CA. Downstream processors also were affected, with smelters and refiners either shutting down or idling production lines. Increases, however, took place in the value and quantity of production of industrial minerals, especially those used in the construction sector, including cement, construction sand and gravel and crushed stone. Trends in mineral-related sectors of the domestic economy, except for iron and steel manufacturing, aluminum manufacturing, coal mining and metals mining, all experienced growth (Table 2).Discussion of mine production is frequently segmented according to the type of materials produced within the broad categories of metals and industrial minerals (also known as nonmetallic minerals). Industrial minerals can be further subdivided as construction aggregates and other industrial minerals. Metals tend to have higher unit values but very low production quantities compared with those of industrial minerals, which have higher production quantities but are lower-valued materials, such as crushed stone or construction sand and gravel. Therefore, for discussion and analysis of the performance of the nonfuel minerals industry, the value of production is used rather than the tonnage produced. Tonnages of construction aggregates are orders of magnitude larger than those for most other mineral commodities thus making direct comparisons based on weight meaningless (Fig. 1).Mineral industry performanceThe estimated value of domestic nonfuel mineral production, including metals ($26.6 billion) and industrial minerals ($51.7 billion), in 2015 declined to a total of $78.3 billion, from $80.8 billion in 2014 (Table 1). However, as shown in Fig. 2, minerals remained fundamental to the United States economy, contributing to the real gross domestic product at several levels, including mining, processing and manufacturing finished products. Net exports of mineral raw materials and old scrap were $14.4 billion. Domestic raw materials, along with domestically recycled materials, were used to produce mineral materials worth $630 billion. These mineral materials, including aluminum, brick, copper, fertilizers and steel, and net imports of processed materials (worth about $32 billion) were, in turn, consumed by downstream industries with a value added to the gross domestic product estimated to be $2,490 billion."

Ordinary portland cement (OPC) is the key pozzalonic component of the concrete mix widely used as a construction material worldwide. B illions of tons of OPC are used in the construction industry each year. However, calcinations of limestone and silica that produce OPC also produce almost an equal amount of C O2 during the cement manufacturing process. Thus, OPC production accounts for nearly 7% of all anthropogenic C O2 emissions each year. The main objective of this study was to develop a geopolymer-based composite to be used as a substitute for OPC in concrete application to significantly lower the carbon footprint of the construction industry. A waste material produced during the coal combustion process was used as the main raw material for the geopolymer-based composite. It was mostly the nonmetallic content of the F-type fly ash produced from the combustion of bituminous coal. The authors envisioned extracting some of the valuable metal oxides from fly ash prior to using the major nonmetallic portion of the fly ash for geopolymer concrete application. The results obtained from this study showed that the compressive strength of geopolymer concrete compares favorably with that of conventional concrete prepared using OPC.

The rapid development of transportation facilities in Japan focused the attention of this country on the possibility of converting the existing coal resources (of which there was an abundance) into liquid fuels, for which there was a constantly increasing demand. Previous work had indicated that this could be accomplished by utilizing one of two processes - the Bergius process, in which high temperatures and high pressures were employed to effect direct liquefaction of the coal, and the Fischer-Tropsch process, in which an indirect liquefaction of coal was accomplished by the production of liquid hydro-carbons from hydrogen-carbon monoxide mixtures. This report describes some investigations into the latter process, which was first developed by Fischer and his colleagues in the Coal Laboratory in Muhlheim, Germany, in 1923. By 1932, these investigators had achieved a 60-percent theoretical yield (152 ml. of liquid hydrocarbons per cubic meter of 2H2:ICO synthesis gas) by using a precipitated Co-Th02 catalyst.3/ At the same time (1932), Dr. Kita of Kyoto Imperial University and Messrs. Fujimura and Tsuneoka obtained 145 ml. of gasoline (C5+) per cubic meter of synthetic gas by using a Co-Cu-Th-U catalyst. 4/ This report is a description of the experimental results subsequently obtained at the Fuel Research Institute, Kawaguchi City, Saitama, up to 1935.

Bolting the mine roof is one of the noisiest underground mining operations. The main contribution to the noise is the drilling of the roof bolt holes, especially drilling in hard rock. Previous research shows that the specific energy consumed in drilling bolt holes is inversely proportional to the bite depth (i.e., penetration per drill revolution). Less specific energy at a reasonably high bite depth means less energy is wasted in the drilling process for producing heat, bit wear and noise. Therefore, proper control of the drilling operation to achieve a reasonably higher bite depth can reduce drilling noise from its sources as a proactive noise control approach. In order to explore the feasibility and develop the proactive technology for reducing drilling noise, drilling tests have been conducted in laboratory settings. The preliminary results show that significant reduction in noise dose can be achieved by drilling in medium hard rock with uniaxial compressive strength of about 276 bars (4,000 psi) and at a reasonably high bite depth of about 4.6 mm/rev (0.18 in./rev). This paper presents the findings from laboratory experimental studies.
