Arguably, one of the most significant technological breakthroughs that had been experienced during the period when British Coal was the major coalmine operating company in the UK, the use of rockbolts as principal support in underground roadways brought with it the need to re-assess the technical knowledge, management controls and legislative frameworks associated with the support of mine workings. Following a major roof fall in a roadway supported principally using rockbolts in which fatalities occurred, the process of the design of rockbolted support and the systems and procedures that had been put in place to control its use in the UK were further reviewed. The paper discusses the outcome of these reviews, and how the incident initiated a major new interest in strata control research in the UK against the background of the fragmentation of the ownership of the mines following the sale of the former British Coal assets at the end of 1994, together with the proposed introduction of new strata control legislation in 1996.

The tailings from beneficiation of Florida phosphate ore contain considerable phosphate values. These tailings are currently discharged into large disposal areas. More than three million tons of P2O5 are discarded with the phosphatic slimes (clays) in Florida each year. These phosphatic clays not only create one of the most difficult disposal problems in the mining industry, but also represent a tremendous loss of P2O5. As the quality and quantity of Florida’s phosphate reserves diminish, recovery of phosphate values from these wastes becomes more vital. This will also significantly lengthen the life of these important phosphate resources. Thus, it is the goal of this study is to recover more than 80% of the phosphate values in phosphatic clays. A systematic study to characterize samples taken from inactive disposal area has been conducted. The data suggest that natural segregation takes place in the settling pond. In other words, coarser particles settle closer to the feeding point of the pond. Flotation tests were conducted using the +325 mesh fraction of samples obtained from sites close to the feeding point (sample# A) and further from that point (sample# B) and (sample# C) which is even further away from the feeding point. The results show the following: Sample# A gives the highest grade and recovery, followed by that of # B and then of # C. There is a great potential to upgrade sample# A where concentrates of high grade (68.9-70.1 % BPL or 31.5- 32.1% P2O5) and recovery (~86.6-95.4 %) can be obtained under the investigated operating conditions (1.0 – 2.0 kg/ton sodium silicate and 1.5—3.0 kg/ton collector mixture of fatty acid and fuel oil). The mineralogical and chemical analysis of all samples is presented in this paper for comparison. Only in this paper, the flotation data of (site # A) are discussed below.

At Copper Refineries Pty. Ltd., Townsville, two reverberatory furnaces of 420 tonnes capacity are used to melt 210000 tonnes/year of copper for subsequent anode casting. When the refinery commenced production in1959, these furnaces were of 300 tonnes capacity. The original furnaces featured a silica brick hearth, magnesite and chrome magnesite side 'walls, and a sprung silica brick roof, but were unsatisfactory because of thelow refractory life and high costs. With continuous expansion in production and the incentive to increase furnace life and capacity the design of these furnaces has changed greatly since that time.The present furnaces feature all basic brick, a flat suspended basic brick roof, very extensive use of watercooled copper sections, and are of substantially increased (420 tonnes) capacity. Particular attention has been concentrated on high wear areas such as the taphole, side walls, and charging door jambs. Each furnace in its 24 h cycle, is charged, the copper melted, impurities skimmed off, metal "poled" prior to casting, and cast.The service condition during each of these operations is important in considering furnace refractory life.The improvements in operating practices and furnace 'construction which enabled the capacity of the furnaces to be increased are discussed. The life between major repairs to side walls has increased from 90 charges to300 charges.The scope for future improvement is considered and areas for development are suggested.

The North Shore Connector Project for the Port Authority of Allegheny County involves TBM mining a pair of subway tunnels through soil and rock under the Allegheny River and a narrow city street. Along the tunnel alignment are a historic building on shallow foundations and modern buildings on deep foundations, one constructed directly over the alignment during the latter phases of design. This paper provides an overview of the general site conditions, and technical basis for excavation support and tunneling decisions. Deformation limits, ground improvement, monitoring and mitigation plans, geotechnical baseline report development, and risk management will also be discussed.

The use of electronic detonators to improve fragmentation is becoming universally accepted. However their use in limiting peak particle vibrations levels is still in its infancy. Most of which is anecdotal, in that few actual scientific studies have been carried and published. This paper details the research work carried out at a limestone quarry in the County of North Yorkshire in Northern England. Here a series of blasts were carried out some used non-electric detonators whilst others used electronic detonators. The majority of blasts were carried out at the same burden, spacing and deck charge weight loadings. Initially, the key variable was the difference in detonator type and then leading on to using the electronic detonators at specific exact different detonator timing intervals. Later the study was extended to include double row as well as single row blasts.

Experimental results are presented for the anode overvoltage as a function of current density for different alumina concentrations in an alumina reduction cell. Voltage changes due to the electrolyte resistance and also the decomposition voltage, have been evaluated as a function of alumina concentration and anode current density. From these values of voltage, changes in the total cell voltage have been derived for changes in alumina concentration for different anode current densities. The results show that for each operating current density there exists a discrete alumina concentration that defines a minimum reduction cell voltage. In 1939, the author made a survey of relative gravity in the Mediterranean-basin, 41° 35,5' to 41° 56.3' northern latitude and 0° 10,3' to 0° 28' longitude, referred to Mt. Mario. Ten stations were covered; 25 other stations had been occupied in the vicinity of Rome and in Albanian mountains during previous years. The new measurements revealed gravity anomalies ranging within the following limits: (1) With a free-air reduction, between + 29 and + 120 mgl., average + 60 mgl.; and (2) with a Bouguer reduction, between + 22 and + 87 mgl., average + 41.5 mgl. - V. "The design of SAG milling circuits for mining projects requires the incorporation of the energy consumption considerations and the evaluation between different flexibility-adding options to absorb the time-dependent variation in the ore lithology. In order to expand the focus of the engineering design, a higher level of deepness and quality in the baseline information must be achieved to elucidate all of the constraints on throughput, energy consumption and product quality generating a design optimization consistent with an integrated vision of the process. This paper presents a review of a collection of typical examples of the copper and gold mining project in the Chilean Andes, in which both process and energy efficiency criteria are considered when the focus is to deliver an integral solution that incorporate those areas in the design. The intensive use of energy in the SAG milling, the process continuity and the quality of the product are a function of the proper design and selection of grinding equipment and plant layout, aligned with the mining plan and associated with projected future expansions and production increases.INTRODUCTION Autogenous and Semiautogenous grinding technology, large diameter and short length mills, begins with the Handsel design. During the decade of 1930’s, Handsel-Hardinge studies led to cascade mill development. Nowadays, 80 years later, continuous improvements in design and technology have been conducted to a completely new generation of gearless SAG mills that have led to an increasing capacity at the concentrator plants. Considering the existing alternatives, SAG mills are the most implemented option for the grinding circuit today. This work presents a review of the SAG mill implementation parameters and circuit considerations and its correlations in the most recent projects in Chile with an ore treatment capacity above 50 ktpd since the decade of the 90’s up to now. From this period, the tendencies will be analyzed using project design data. Based on process design information, the recent SAG mill history in relevant projects related to the new generation of commercial SAG mills, technical associated considerations and performance will be discussed. Circuit selection based on energy utilization will be revised to bring up a more holistic perspective on the SAG mill circuit design concepts. As is now well known, the heart of every concentrator plant are the grinding mills. Higher demands on throughput, availability and power consumption optimizations require not only high performance electrical equipment but also a well selected grinding circuit. The energy efficiency issues associated to the circuits design will be reviewed."

The Bushveld platinum group metal deposits are two distinct, shallow-dipping stratiform tabular orebodies and strike for many hundreds of kilometres. Mining is extensive, with depths ranging from close-to-surface to 2 000 m. The mining method is a variation of planar open stoping. Pillars are widely used to support the openstopes. Little work has been done in the past to determine pillar strength and pillars have been designed using experience and formulae developed for other hard-rock mines. This has led to oversize pillars with consequential loss of ore or undersize pillars resulting in potential collapses or pillar bursts. This paper describes a back-analysis of pillar failures at Impala Platinum, just north of Rustenburg, and provides insights into pillar behaviour. Strength formulae are presented for Merensky Reef pillars at Impala. These formulae may be used cautiously on other platinum mines with similar geotechnical and geomechanical conditions.

Introduction Federal and state laws enacted to regulate coal mining and the accompanying public concern about the adverse effects that mining might have on land use have focused much attention on the subsidence of the land surfaces over underground mines. Some questions asked are: • Will abandoned mines subside in the future even though they have exhibited no surface adjustment to date? • If so, when will subsidence take place? • Can a specific surface area be affected by subsidence more than once? • What surface form will the subsidence feature take? • Is there any way to predict when subsidence will occur and end? An attempt is made here to address these questions insofar as it is possible with available data and experience of evaluation of subcritical extraction conditions. Mining that results in subsidence features can be classified as supercritical, subcritical, and critical with respect to the minimum span lengths of the worked-out rooms (Fig. 1). A complete basin will not develop fully immediately over subcritical conditions because the span lengths of the entries are less than the critical dimension (Wardell, 1983). Passageways, entries, and room-and-pillar panels are all included in the subcritical category. Because of the short span lengths, subcritical mining conditions tend to be stable over the life of the mine unless adverse geologic conditions exist (Gray et al., 1974; Dunrud, 1976). Various roof control and support procedures are employed to maintain entry stability during mining. Little information exists concerning the time factor of subsidence over areas of subcritical extraction. Data that have been collected relate to longwall mines, whereby the cavity sizes are designed large enough to induce caving behind the working faces so that complete subsidence at the surface occurs within a short period of time. The UK's National Coal Board (1975) has reduced the enormous amount of data it has collected to empirical correlations and has published these correlations in its Subsidence Engineers Handbook. The handbook states that "None of the foregoing remarks applies to pillar and stall working," with respect to the section discussing the time factor of subsidence caused by longwall mining (National Coal Board, 1975, p. 40). To understand and evaluate how time relates to subsidence above room-and-pillar mines, one must first recognize how mine cavities deteriorate and fail. The propagation of failure to the surface must then be studied, and, finally, the failures that are manifest at the surface in the form of depressions accompanied by both compressional and tensional movements must be investigated. Failure of mine cavities Any cavity beneath the earth's surface represents a condition of nonequilibrium and tends to close with time. Failure of cavities in a subcritical mine can be classified as failure of the roof, failure of the floor, failure of the supports (pillars, cribs), and elastic rebound of the rock. One mode of failure may dominate, but generally combinations of the four will occur. Also, initial instability of geologic materials and structural features and in situ stress may be unknown factors that can contribute to cavity failure. Roof failure is the most obvious opening stability problem in most operating mines. The bridging capabilities of the roof rock are dependent on the rock's material strength, geologic discontinuities, and reaction to humidity changes in the air of the mine. This type of failure may vary in magnitude from gradual flaking to massive roof falls. Mine floor instability can be manifest in the form of a general heave over a broad area or of individual pillar punching. The weaker and thicker the immediate floor material, the more prone a mine is to experience floor problems. Water seeping into an area can soften the underclay, reduce its bearing capacity, and precipitate failure of support for the overburden.

The methane content of virgin bituminous coalbed can now be measured accurately in the field with exploration core samples from vertical boreholes. The gas content of the coal per unit weight can be used either to design a mine ventilation system or to determine if degasification of the coalbed will be necessary before mining, and to determine the gas resources in the coalbed. The equipment necessary to conduct the test costs less than $50. The gas content of the coal in place in the ground is determined by summing the gas lost from coring, gas measured during desorption, and the residual gas in the coal. Upon removal from the borehole, the core sample is placed in an airtight container and desorbed for several weeks until the desorption rate is below 0.05 cm3/g for 5 consecutive days. The gas lost from the core while it was being cored and the residual gas are estimated by a new graphical method. The amount of gas remaining depends upon whether the coal is friable or blocky. Friability appears to relate to the depth of the sample below the surface, fixed carbon percentage, Hardgrove grindability index, and proximity to tectonic disturbance. Friable coals emit nearly 96 pct of the total gas during desorption whereas a blocky coal emits only 60 pct of its total gas. Coalbeds that are ill defined as to their blocky or friable nature must be tested in the laboratory for unambiguous analysis.

Blasting in the heart of the historic Byward Market District of Canada’s capital, Ottawa, presents a unique set of challenges. The obvious difficulties arising on projects requiring blasting within 3 m (10 ft) of 125 year old buildings in various states of disrepair have been encountered and successfully dealt with countless times before. The complexities increase exponentially when tenuous property boundaries, unknown structural details, litigious histories and the need for encroachment agreements lead to individuals with competing interests all able to impact the same operation. Blasting on three projects in the Market was started in early 2005 after months of negotiation. Ultimately, the potential for the projects to proceed hinged on the ability to successfully disseminate blast data to the various stakeholders. As part of the agreements drawn up, property owners demanded immediate notification of the measured vibration levels with contract provisions including clauses such that any exceedance of the USBM criteria immediately triggered project shut down and complete blasting program redesign, and approval by all parties. With stakeholders located in various cities and, in some instances, on various continents, a conventional attended monitoring strategy would not satisfy the requirements. In response to the critical reporting need, Explotech Engineering Ltd. installed unattended monitoring stations around the sites, all incorporating wireless telemetry. After each blast, data was automatically transferred from the monitoring stations to a web-linked server via the wireless network, where it was immediately available to project stakeholders through a password protected website. The solution required a unique blend of data acquisition, telemetry, database, and security technologies, all married to produce a reliable system that was easy to maintain and use. While these types of systems were originally developed for use as permanent monitoring networks in operating mines and quarries, monitoring professionals are increasingly benefiting from the technology on temporary building projects that have typically been the realm of attended monitoring strategies. Globally, this has emerged as a solution to provide more timely access to data for stakeholders, and to minimize the legal exposure from multiple violations of vibration limits. As this trend is likely to continue, the regulated vibration control industry is likely to see a continued shift in technology development to leverage wireless networks and the Internet to continue to improve data transfer, archiving and distribution.

This report is one of a series prepared by the Bureau of Mines on manganese deposits of the Northwestern States. It describes properties on the Olympic Peninsula, Wash. Exploration by the Federal Bureau of Mines in 1939-40 and 1954-55 on several typical deposits is summarized, and examination data are presented for other manganese deposits on the peninsula. An attempt was made to list all known occurrences; however, some properties are abandoned, and their exact location is unknown.

Flotation collectors for sulfide minerals has been traditionally based on xanthate, thiophosphate, thiophosphinate and thiocarbamate, all derived from sulfur chemistry. Tecflote™ is a new family of patented collectors based on nitrile chemistry which can supplement or replace thiol collectors, depending on the ore types. A steep grade-recovery curve typical of Tecflote™ collectors was observed when using Tecflote™ as the main collector for the rougher and cleaner steps allowing a better recovery compared to current thiol collectors while maintaining the desired grade. Additional recovery increase has also been observed by the addition of scavenger steps using Tecflote™ collector in combination with current thiol-based collector. The selectivity seen in the lab is transferred to full scale trial and is clearly seen in the rough flotation where the increase in the rough concentrate grade of 5% after pumping Tecflote S11 directly into the tank cell. The mechanisms for Tecflote’s selectivity towards sulfides are currently under investigation and will be discussed. Results of TOF-SIMS analysis will be presented, demonstrating the collector’s selective affinity to different mineral surfaces in flotation. INTRODUCTION The history of collectors used today started in 1882 when Zeise first made xanthates. It was first used in flotation in 1925 – Cornelius Keller’s first patent (Fuerstenau, Jameson, Yoon, 2007). Between 1928 and 1930 American Cyanamid filed 7 patents for dithiophosphate, including flotation and chemical synthesis of the reagent, the first of which was filed by Christmann in 1928 (Christmann, 1933). Synthesize of thionocarbamates for mineral flotation was filed in 1954, by Dow Chemical Company (Harris, 1954). Now that the head grades have been declining over the last decades the need to find more selective collectors to extract difficult and complex ores has pushed the industry to look at different chemistries. Thiol collectors standard to the industry rely on the sulfur in the collector molecule to bond to the mineral surface. The electronic property of this group is modified by the adjacent chemical groups, such as additional S, P or N have the effect of changing the selectivity of the collector (Wills & Finch, 2016). In the case of xanthate the length of the hydrophobic group also has an effect on the selectivity with some minerals such that the ethyl xanthate is more selective against pyrite and pyrrhotite than the long chain xanthates (Wills & Finch, 2016).

With access to the World Wide Web, many resources are readily available for improving claim reports. With a little time spent on line, a more thorough report can be created. Claimants will accept the conclusions of a report more readily when they can view support information on their own computer, particularly when the support information is not just from blasting related web sites. Some suggested resources are discussed including aerial pictures, local tax maps, topographical maps and home repair web sites. This paper provides suggestions for tracking down support information on the web and information on how to properly reference this information. Case studies of several claim investigations are presented. These are some examples of how a little time spent online provided clear and convincing evidence to support the conclusions of the investigation.

An existing operation carries with it a history that can present unique opportunities, while a greenfield operation allows for the establishment of a defined culture. Capital investments are distinctly different. The construction of large underground openings through cohesionless or weak cohesive soils and under the water table in particular, often requires a ground improvement to be done from the surface or ahead of the excavation face in tunnelling problems. To this purpose various injection procedures have been used in the past and new outstanding techniques have been developed recently, such as "jet-grouting", extending the feasibility range. The paper presents a review of basic principles and practical design criteria with particular reference to the newest trends of development. Case histories have been selected within the experience of specialist contractor Rodio Co. showing the variety of problems solved by manifold grouting procedures and layouts, in widely different soils ranging from the sandy-gravelly alluvia of Milan to the soft marine clays of Singapore.

Two radioisotope techniques suitable for the rapid laboratory determination of the ash content of coal have been tested ou unwashed coal samples from four Australian coal seams. In one techniqne, measurements of backscattered 238Pu L X-rays and iron K X-rays from finely ground coal samples have been combined to determine ash content in uuwashed coals to ±0.5 weight per ce111 ash (ls) for three seams and 0.9 weight per cent ash for the fourth.The second technique, which involves measurements of the transmission by the coal of narrow beams of 241Am 60 keV and 123Ba 356 keV ? rays, requires less sample preparat ion. The ash was determined to within the range of 0.8 to 2.6 weight per cent for the four seams (unwashed coal). For washed coals, errors are expected to be < ±0.5 weight per cent ash.
