"The El Indio roasting facility associated with El Indio Mine in Central Chile has operated since 1981. It is a facility developed to remove arsenic and antimony from gold bearing enargite/pyrite flotation concentrates.The three installed roasters are Nichols Herreschoff units each with 14 hearths and measuring 4.85 metres diameter. Hearths are rabbled by central shaft driven rabble arms. Product is progressively heated to 750°C under neutral to reducing atmospheric conditions to drive off labile sulphur, arsenic and antimony.Ancillary equipment includes skip hoist feed arrangements, water cooled screw conveyors for transporting and cooling calcine, gas cyclones, post combustion chambers, heat exchangers, electrostatic precipitators, bag houses, gas scrubbers and packaging facilities .Operating practices, history, mineralogy and results are reviewed. The improvements to arsenic and antimony extraction, ambiental conditions and environmental achievements are discussed.INTRODUCTIONHistoryThe El Indio property lies in the El Indio belt, a copper, gold and silver area approximately 175 km long by 10 km wide. The property is located in the Andes Mountains of the central part of Chile at latitude 30"" South and 160 km from the sea-side city of La Serena. Plant location is at 3850 meters above sea level.The property currently consists of two underground mines feeding the El Indio plant and an open pit feeding the newer Tambo leach plant. The property has been controlled by a succession of owners (St. Joe Minerals, Fluor, Bond Gold International and Lac Minerals Ltd.) before acquisition by Barrick Gold Corporation in 1994."

"Co-rich ferromanganese crusts (Fe-Mn crusts) distributed on seamounts in the western Pacific are potential economic resources for cobalt, nickel, platinum, and other rare metals in the future. Evaluation and selection of a mining site can be established based on abundance and grade of Fe-Mn crusts in the site as well as topography that should be smooth enough for mining operations. Therefore, acquisition of shipboard echo-sounding and acoustic backscatter data are prerequisite to the selection of potential mine sites in addition to visual and sampling operations. Acoustic backscatter data can be used to locate crust-covered areas on a regional scale with the understanding of acoustic properties of crust through its correlation with visual and sampling data.During an expedition that took place from January to March 2014, KIOST collected geophysical and geologic data to assess the resource potential for Fe-Mn crusts on three seamounts (guyots) in the Western Pacific. In OSM11, one of the three surveyed seamounts, three camera tows were performed to observe the distribution of Fe-Mn crusts on the summit and slopes of the seamount. Although sediments of various thicknesses generally cover most of summit region of OSM11, several regions with high backscatter signals occur on the periphery of the summit. The occurrence of Fe-Mn crusts, observed during the camera tows, on those high backscattered regions suggests that the backscatter signals of shipboard multi-beam sonar can reflect changes in the geology of the seafloor from sediment layer to Fe-Mn crust deposits. The Fe-Mn crust deposited around the summit region is worthy of notice because of its topographic characteristics, including shallow depth, flat or gentle inclined surface, and smooth relief, which are more suitable for mining operation compared to the flanks of seamount."

The economics of a mineral processing circuit is dependent on the numerous sensors that are critical to optimization and control systems. The sheer volume of sensors results in mines not being able to keep the sensors calibrated. When a sensor goes off calibration, it results in errors which can severely impact plant economics. Normally, these errors are not detected until the error grows and becomes a large (“gross”) error. Undetected errors are not remedied until the next calibration, which on average are a year apart Beamex (2019) [1] across all industries. Classical statistical methods that depend on linear relationships between input and response variables are typically used to find gross errors, but are not effective for highly non-linear and non-stationary operations in mining and mineral processing industries. Calibration of sensors is time-consuming and generally requires physical intervention that results in equipment downtimes causing production losses. Therefore, in situ detection methods are warranted that do not require physical removal of sensors to compare with standard measurements or well-calibrated sensors. Data-mining based techniques and algorithms have high success rate in tackling such problems. This paper presents results from a groundbreaking multi-year big data research project whose goal was to develop data-mining-based original techniques in a multi-sensor environment to identify when sensors start to stray, rather than wait for errors to grow. The carbon stripping (gold) circuit in the Pogo Mine of Alaska was selected for this project. Maintaining strip vessel temperatures at optimum levels is crucial for maximizing gold recoveries at Pogo, and hence the focus was on the temperature sensors of the two strip vessels. An automated algorithm to detect errors in strip vessel temperature sensors was developed that exploited data from multiple sensors in the strip circuit. This algorithm was able to detect with a high success rate when bias errors of magnitude as low as ± 2% were artificially induced into strip vessel temperature data streams. The detection times of about 1 month were much less than the industry average calibration frequency of 1 year. Thus, the algorithm helps detect errors early, without stopping the circuit. The algorithm alarms can serve as triggers when calibrations are done. Experimental methodology along with results, limitations of algorithms, and future research are also presented in this paper.

"The large extent of global production and consumption of aggregates from quarries, grabs one´s attention and makes its substantial and essential standpoint in the world today pretty clear. A great amount of aggregates is utilized in civil engineering applications such as road construction, railway industry, concrete production, etc. Considering this fact that igneous rocks display a higher strength and abrasion resistance, this type of rock is preferred in the field of civil engineering. For all these applications, rock quality assurance is a key factor and certainly unavoidable, and it has great influence on the quality of constructions in civil engineering. One of the major problems encountered by both the producers and users of igneous rock is the fact that, with the passage of time, some specific rocks lose their strength, up to a complete loss of structure or in other words, their disintegration and degradation. In the last decades, different methods and procedures such as Glycol test, methylene blue dye test, as well as the Los Angeles test have been introduced to distinguish these rock properties, and to identify these problems. However, as these methods are time consuming, hard to perform, only to be applied to hand-piece samples, requiring special laboratory equipments, and only possible to be accomplished under laboratory conditions, their application has always been limited to some specific cases, and they are neither recommendable nor advantageous. In addition, these methods provide partially different results for the same rock. To address this widespread quality management problem of the quarry industry, a relatively quick, easy and user-friendly approach is necessary. It calls for a systematic solution with a device that can simply be used day to day in a mine for quality control of the quarry´s daily production. This scientific research is concentrated on developing a systematic method for early recognition and diagnosis of rock quality, in order to control and manage the quality of the quarry production in advance. This method was developed, based on the procedure of the magnetic susceptibility measurement. The obtained values can lead to valuable information regarding the quality of the rock and allows the quality control process to be accomplished and performed at the borehole location. This approach has been assessed through extensive field and laboratory studies. A detailed and comprehensive discussion will be made on the results of the experiments. The advantages and impacts of the application of this method, on increasing the reserves and environmental protection are also discussed."

Crushing has proven to be of fundamental importance in mine mill integration at Highland Valley Copper (HVC). Highland Valley Copper has achieved large throughput and good quality control through the gyratory crushers by proper blast design and better gap control. The next step, in optimizing the mine mill relationship, is evaluating the crusher liner wear and its shape influence on performance and product size reduction. To do this a laser measurement device has been developed and data is being recorded on the concave and mantle liner wear. This paper will outline the work to date and indicate specific objectives of the work.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, DC arc furnace, smelting, silicon The technical feasibility of silicon smelting in a DC arc furnace was investigated. A graphite-lined furnace was operated at power levels of 150 to 160 kW, and 40 to 60 V. The average feed rate during the silicon production period was about 30 kg/h. The recipe consisted of pre-mixed batches of 28% petroleum coke and 72% lumpy silica. The target furnace operating temperature was set at 1600°C and then raised to 1700°C. In total, about 1.6 tons of premixed feed materials was processed over 16 feeding?tapping operations. The feed was manually charged into the furnace in sub-batches of 10 to 40 kg at a time. The total batch mass was set at 90 kg during the initial part of the testwork, and increased to about 120 kg for the rest of the campaign.

NIOSH researchers conducted a study to compare seat designs on underground coal mine haulage vehicles. The objective of the study was to support prior findings that NIOSH-designed seats, which incorporated ergonomic design features (e.g., viscoelastic foam padding and low-back support), are improved designs. Based on measured levels of vehicle jarring/jolting and perceived discomfort, researchers evaluated four different designs - two in-use and two NIOSH-developed, ergonomic designs. Researchers collected data using a short questionnaire, a linear, visual analog scale, and accelerometers with a data recorder. Results showed that vehicle operators favored the NIOSH seats with added adjustability, low-back support, and improved seat padding over the existing seats. In addition, the measurements indicated all NIOSH seats performed better than the existing seat, under the no-load (worse of two) conditions, in reducing peak acceleration, crest factor, and RMS acceleration. The authors summarize the data collected and operator preferences for seat designs and different foam padding arrangements.

INTRODUCTION Crude oil reserves in the United States are still very large, even though for many years they have not been sufficient to supply our entire domestic requirements. They are continuously being depleted as oil is pumped from the ground, but new discoveries and improved secondary and tertiary recovery methods are helping to reduce the rate of depletion. It is thus a slowly diminishing resource, but even as it is being consumed, immense reserves of oil are left behind as the so called "un-recoverable" portion of petroleum formations. Most oil fields can only obtain a 15 to 40% recovery of the original reservoir, and it is widely quoted that there are still about 300 billion barrels of this un-recoverable oil still in place (Mauch, 1980, etc.). With the present comparatively high oil prices, and the possibility of even higher future prices and short supply, this oil becomes an interesting potential reserve. Mining the petroleum formation would be one means of recovering at least a portion of this oil. The concept of oil mining is neither new nor limited to conventional oil fields, since the procedure could be equally employed with the otherwise difficult to produce heavy oil deposits, and the solid or semi-solid tar sands and diatomaceous hydrocarbon formations. Estimates place the U.S. tar sand resource at about 30 billion barrels, and heavy oil at 5-10 billion barrels (Unitar, 1982). Figure 1 graphically summarizes the heavy oil reserves based upon formation depth and characteristics, while Figure 2 shows their location. This report is the result of the engineering efforts performed by the Mining Equipment Operations of FMC to develop methods of automating a continuous miner. This work was done as part of modification number three of the contract for the development of a miner/bolter system. As the demand for energy places an ever-increasing pressure on the coal mining industry to produce more coal, methods for underground mining which will increase productivity with a con-current increase in safety are being actively sought. Removing the machine operator from his station on the continuous miner and placing him at a safer location behind the machine while retaining his control functions via an umbilical cable or a radio link was an important first step. However, the problems of poor visibility, no control "feel", and the judgmental problems of controlling the sump distance and the shear limits have not been conducive to the productivity increase that is desired.

In this article an experimental study of axial bearing capacity of half-closed steel pipe pile installed at BKSH dock is presented. In comparison with open and closed end piles, half-closed end pile is considered to have high bearing capacity and good penetration, that is, it not only has a capacity as twice as the same size open end steel pipe pile, but also has blow counts as half as the same size closed end steel pipe pile. It is economic to use half-closed end pile in soft ground without a deep deposit of thick stiff clay. This article also describes a large scale model pile test and preliminarily analyses mechanism of improvement of bearing capacity of half-closed end pile with emphasis on effect of squeezed soil on side friction; an empirical approach is presented in which side friction is related to density of squeezed soil and which is useful for reasonably chosing side friction of different types of piles in design of foundarion.

Three test pile programs were conducted in Charleston, South Carolina to evaluate differences in bearing resistance due to installation methods. The tested piles were installed with impact hammers and vibratory drivers through soft clays and/or loose sands into the Cooper Marl, a stiff calcareous marine clay or silt. Piles driven into the Cooper Marl experience significant capacity gain with time following initial installation due largely to pore pressure dissipation. Pile size and pile type were both known to affect pore pressure generation during installation and subsequently the capacity gain with time. The test programs were primarily conducted to optimize pile design values and construction methods with regard to trestle construction but the results also contribute to the understanding of driven pile behavior. High strain dynamic testing was performed on several open-end pipe and H-piles. The measured difference in long-term bearing capacity of the H-piles as a result of the two installation methods was negligible, while the short-term bearing capacity of the pipe pile was larger when the piles were installed using impact hammers. The lower short-term resistance in the vibratory driven piles is attributed to larger excess pore pressures generated during installation compared to those generated during impact driving.

Peñasquito is Mexico's largest gold producer, consisting of two open pits - Peñasco and Chile Colorado - containing gold, silver, lead and zinc. Over the next three years, mining activities in the pit are expected to be focused on lower grade ore in the upper parts of the Peñasco pit while stripping is emphasized to ensure an economically optimal pit shell design to maximize the net asset value of the operation. By 2019, Peñasquito’s gold production is expected to benefit from an improvement in mined grades as it recommences mining higher grades at the bottom of the Peñasco pit and significantly enhanced metallurgical recoveries with the planned completion of the Pyrite Leach Project ("PLP").

"PURPOSE OF REPORTThe purpose of this report, which is the third of a. series on the coal mines of the Western States, is to give the findings of a study of the causes and methods of prevention of accidents from falls of root and coal in the mines of Lincoln County, Wyo. The three mines covered in this report, referred to as A. B. and C, account- for 9 per cent of the coal production in the county and nearly 9 per cent of the State's total production. For comparative purposes some statistical data are presented bearing upon the relation of injuries to their causes, to tonnage produced, to men employed, to days worked, and to days lost as the result of injuries.FATALITIES IN WYOMINGTo show the necessity for this study, Table 1 given the fatalities that occurred during 1928 in the bituminous—coal mines of the United States, of the State of Wyoming of Lincoln County, and in Mines A, B, and C, followed by a brief description of the Kemmerer coal dis-trict, its coal beds and immediate roof, thickness of cover, dip of coal beds, methods of mining timbering for roof support, roof testing, and supervision. Deposits of rare earth elements (REE) are found in NM, but they have not been important exploration targets in past years because demand has been met elsewhere. However, with the projected increase in demand and potential lack of available production from China, the New Mexico deposits are being re-examined for their potential. REE-Th-U veins are found in the Gallinas, Caballo, Capitan, and Cornudas Mountains and Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills. Past production of bastnaesite has come from the Gallinas Mountains. Carbonatites are found in the Lemitar and Chupadera Mountains, Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills, Lobo Hill, and Monte Largo (Sandia Mountains). Although carbonatites have not been found in the Gallinas Mountains, they are suspected to occur in the subsurface based upon mineralogy/alteration. Disseminated Y-Zr deposits in syenite are found at Pajarito Mountain, Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation near Ruidoso. In 1990, Molycorp, Inc. reported historic resources of 2.7 million short tons grading 0.18% Y2O3 and 1.2% ZrO2 as disseminated eudialyte. Two additional deposit types have potential for REE in New Mexico: Cretaceous heavy mineral, beach-placer sandstone deposits and pegmatites. Exploration is ongoing in the Lemitar, Gallinas, and Cornudas Mountains.

The past decade has brought significant changes in the use of risk-based criteria for safety within the U.S. Department of Defense. The Range Commanders Council (RCC) chartered a working group to develop and define risk acceptance criteria for protecting the general public and mission essential personnel from debris from launch ranges. This working group has continued to develop and update RCC Standard 321 as the needs of the ranges and range users have evolved. A revision to RCC Standard 321 is near finalization and will include casualty criteria, guidelines for assessing risks due to other flight hazards in addition to inert debris, and an overall risk management process for range safety. This paper reports on work in progress and includes several precedents which may prove important to the explosives safety community.

The method of Substance Flow Analysis (SFA) provides a helpful tool for the study of the industrial metabolism of a certain metal within a regional level, such as copper, lead etc. In this paper the flows and inventory of cobalt in China, 2008, were traced with the STAF model, and the situations of production, fabrication and manufacturing, use and waste management in China were introduced. The result revealed that the resource of cobalt in China was so poor that a large amount of cobalt material or cobalt products needed to be imported, and there was lack of recycling of cobalt resources.0

Introduction Since the last decade the iron ore processing industry has undergone drastic changes from supplying screened and natural ores to manufacturing tailored concentrates and pellets. Increased need for the beneficiation of lower grade iron ore deposits and the increased demand for higher grade concentrates necessitate finer grinding of iron ores before concentration. The normal filtration stations used in the past are experiencing difficulties in dewatering the finely ground concentrates to moisture levels acceptable for balling. In addition to finer grinding, applications of complex beneficiation techniques has decreased the filterability of the concentrates and create problems in filtration of iron ore concentrates. An overview of the filtration literature indicates there are few research reports on the dewatering of iron ore concentrate slurries. There exists a need to understand the principles and mechanisms involved in the filtration of iron ore concentrate slurries with a goal of developing more efficient filtration techniques. This paper presents the results from the first phase of our research program that included the development of a reproducible benchscale filtration technique and the investigation of the filtration behavior of eight iron ore concentrates.

Over the last fifty years, the treatment of enargite concentrates has not received much attention primarily because of the availability of other clean concentrates suitable for processing with existing smelting and/or leaching technologies. As traditional copper ores have become scarcer, copper-arsenic ore deposits have garnered more interest. Arsenic release is a significant concern during the treatment of enargite by pyro or hydrometallurgical methods. Enargite is also very refractive in standard leaching procedures. Thus, economical treatment options for enargite concentrates are needed. Preliminary experiments have shown that the acid-bake leach process could be adapted and used for the treatment of enargite concentrates. In this study, low-temperature (100-400 ºC) sulfuric acid baking of an enargite concentrate followed by water-leaching has been evaluated. The results indicate the thermal transformation of enargite to copper sulfate during sulfuric acid baking, with most of the arsenic being released from the concentrate into the gas phase for baking at 400 ºC. The condition for maximum copper extraction (~100%) from the concentrate was found to be 400 ºC, sulfuric acid amount of 0.5 mL/g of concentrate, and 2 h baking time. Part of the arsenic was captured in the form of arsenopyrite (FeAsS). XRD analysis proved the presence of some arsenic in the form of claudetite (As2O3) in the baked concentrate. Acid baking of pure enargite behaved in similar fashion.
