The Stress Control Method of mine design provides enhanced engineering control over the behavior of underground structures in comparison to conventional mine design methods. The same Method can be applied to achieve design control of surface subsidence. The basic mechanism relating undergroued deformation and surface subsidence is disclosed by mine simulations, using the REM (Rheological Element Method) computer code, whose predictions have been validated by field measurements. The key components of the underlying mechanism of surface subsidence have been shown to be the stress envelopes formed in the process of underground excavation. It has also been demonstrated that significant control of surface subsidence can be achieved by designing the geometry and timing of underground excavation to regulate the formation of stress envelopes. A field example is given in this paper to illustrate this application of the Stress Control Method.

"The surface of many concentrate thickeners has traditionally looked like that of a flotation cell. Over the last three years Normandy Golden Grove Concentrator, in partnership with Outokumpu Technology have developed and implemented an innovative breakthrough deaeration technology to address this problem.When installed in the thickener feedline, the system successfully detached air bubbles adhering to the solid particles and removed air bubbles from the feed stream, subsequently presenting a fully deaerated feed to the thickener feedwell.Tests to date have shown an 80% reduction in overflow solids. As a result, costs associated with concentrate loss and measures to recover concentrate that settles in process tanks and ponds have been minimized.MOTIVATIONIt is recognised in mineral processing operations that the entrainment of finely divided air in thickener feeds can cause significant problems in the operation of a thickener. This is particularly the case with thickening of flotation concentrates, in which air bubbles are strongly attached to the mineral particles and are difficult to remove. Such particles attached to fine air bubbles rise to the thickener surface, and hence over the weir and into the thickener overflow. High solids carryover can lead to a direct loss of mineral product, and if the product settles in process water tanks and ponds, the recovery of this product by means of intermittent dredging operations is usually expensive and inconvenient.Many concentrate thickeners are fitted with devices which attempt to alleviate this problem. Froth rings or baffles, skimmers and froth sprays, all play a part in reducing the amount of solids carried over into the overflow. However, many froths are very stable and persist despite these measures. In the worst cases, a thick froth layer forms which builds up to a depth greater than the froth ring, and hence may overflow or pass beneath the ring . Any concentrate that finds its way past the froth ring can also cause blockage of the overflow weir and launder, and has the potential to upset clarification performance by cutting off sections of the overflow handling system. The formation of a froth layer on the thickener also makes it more difficult for the operator to monitor the clarification performance."

"Over the past several years, Svedala has developed a continuous charge monitor (CCM) for tumbling mills. It consists of a strain gauge embedded into a rubber lifter and associated electronics. This paper describes the installation and use of such a device on a SAG mill at the Holt-McDermott Mine. Comparison to measured static volumetric load and bearing pressure and inclusion of the measurement into a control strategy and its potential for condition monitoring is discussed. INTRODUCTIONWhile the measurement of load is very important in all kinds of grinding applications, the biggest benefits are expected from AG and SAG milling. This is what motivated Holt-McDermott to take a closer look at this problem, with a view to optimizing SAG mill performance.In many cases, the SAG mill control problem can be stated as maximizing throughput while avoiding a volumetric overload, with the other constraints (e.g. power, grind size, upstream/downstream equipment constraints, etc.) playing a less important role. This is certainly true at Holt-McDermott where the SAG mill is the production bottleneck about 90% of the time, and anything that can be done to increase SAG mill throughput will have a significant impact on operating profit.Although the goal of maximizing throughput while avoiding volumetric overload is simple to state, it has proven to be much more difficult to achieve. The mineral processing industry has expended a great deal of time and effort to devise control strategies in the pursuit of this objective. While much progress has been made, there is still room for considerable improvement. Across the industry it is probably fair to say that overloads occur relatively infrequently, but the real losses accrue as a result of the tendency to run rather conservatively."

TO THE AMERICAN MINING CONGRESS. AMERICAN INSTITUTE OE MINING ENGINEERS. MINING AND METALLURGICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA. The committee that makes this report was appointed at the meeting of the American Mining Congress, at Denver, Colo., in. November, 1906. The appointment had in view the drafting. of a law for the regulation of quarrying and metalliferous mining under the police laws of the States, with the hope that the uniform adoption of such a law could tend to reduce the number of accidents in mining. Since its. appointment, the committee has had' under serious and continuous consideration the matter with which it was charged. At the meetings 0f the American Mining Congress in 19o7, 1908 and 1909, it reported progress. At the meeting in 1909 it was authorized to present its report not only to the American Mining Congress, but also to the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the. Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, and to present its report in printed form during the interim between meetings of the American Mining Congress. The committee collected from the officials of the States of the Union copies of their mining laws. With the assistance of the Engineering and Mining Journal copies of the laws 0f Great Britain, the Transvaal, New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, Tasmania, New aland, and certain European countries were also obtained. These laws were subjected to careful study. The first publication of the committee was a summary of the more important metalliferous mining laws 0f this country. Upon the basis of the existing laws of the States of the Union, Great Britain, and the English speaking colonies, a tentative draft. was prepared and printed in limited number in 1909, for convenience in securing the advice and criticism of a considerable number 0f persons engaged in the mining industry. In this way valuable suggestions were received. At the request of the chairman of this committee, Mr. Frederick L. Hoffman, statistician of the Prudential Insurance Company, of Newark, N. India is the third largest producer of coal and the fourth largest in terms of coal reserves in the world. However, new research quite ironically projects that despite the continuing growth in domestic coal production, the country’s exploding economic growth will position it to be the biggest coal importer by 2020. India’s inability to meet the domestic coal demand is mainly attributed to low rate of production, increasing stripping ratio, non use of appropriate technology etc. of coal mining operations here. Presently Indian surface mines which have to shoulder the onerous responsibility of augmenting the coal extraction rate at an even brisker pace are mulling bigger, better and more efficient operations ensuring commensurate rise in stripping work as well. This mammoth task can be accomplished only by deploying smart technologies. In this perspective, cast blasting of overburden emerges on the horizon as a promising alternative for enhancement of the production and productivity of Indian open-pit coal mines.

"Feed particle size is an important variable for the primary grinding mill operation. Several commercial vision systems have proven to successfully measure online many types of ores and are used for automatic control. However, due to limitations associated with segmentation algorithms, these systems fail to provide good measurements when the feed is composed of a specific bimodal particle size distribution: very big rocks and a large amount of fine particles. This is typically the case for crushed iron ore. This paper presents a technique to overcome the limitations of existing vision systems by using 3D cameras and appropriate processing methods. It provides online particle size distribution indicators and bulk volume flow rate measurement. It is designed to be very cost-effective, robust, precise, easy to install and to maintain. The 3D system was validated in two iron ore processing plants and the results clearly show that it can be used to optimize primary grinding mill operation where 2D segmentation vision systems fail.INTRODUCTIONFragmentation measurement using digital image processing has successfully been applied in mining and mineral processing operations. Several maintenance and operating applications are already deployed in the industry: Measurement of rock fragmentation after blasting (Maerz, 1999; Palangio, 1999) (Pragyan, 2012) Truck inventory (Palangio, 2005) Monitoring of crusher mantle wear Automatic control of crushers and SAG mills (Bouajila, 2000) (Bartolacci, 2001)Commercial technologies like WipFrag (Maerz, 1999), VisioRock and others proved to be very efficient to precisely measure the particle size distribution of many types of materials. These products are mainly composed of a camera, a lighting system and an image processing system based on a segmentation algorithm. By controlling adequately the lighting conditions and with periodic maintenance on the segmentation algorithm calibration parameters, it is almost always possible to achieve reliable measurements.However, the segmentation algorithm is not adequate when the particle size distribution contains big rocks and a large amount of fine particles. In this case, the area containing the fine particles is accounted as a big rock while big rocks get segmented as multiple smaller sized particles, leading globally to a wrong measurement. This situation prevails for crushed iron ore and coke, among other materials. Figure 1 shows a picture of a material which is typically very difficult to process through segmentation techniques."

Educational campaigns conducted by the manufacturers of explosives, the Bureau of Mines, mining companies, and safety organizations have contributed greatly in reducing accidents caused by explosives arid blasting. Despite these campaigns and the dissemination of information, accidents from explosives and blasting continue to be the direct cause of scores of fatalities and hundreds of nonfatal accidents annually, not only in the mineral industry but essentially wherever explosives are used. The experience of many mining companies and other users of explosives has proved that accidents from explosives can be prevented or averted by the proper training of employees in the handling and using of explosives and by the enforcement of definite rules and instructions for their use. Unfortunately, throughout the years numerous false impressions and ideas have grown up and around the use of explosives. Many of these can be traced back to the manner in which the users of explosives were originally taught, if instructed at all; and as with many types of misinformation in nearly all walks of life, those false ideas are decidedly persistent and being so cause much damage. Many if not most of the users of explosives gained their knowledge of explosives and blasting by watching others and more or less "absorbing" the procedures and thrones of the other fellow, who acted unconsciously as teacher or instructor. A study of explosives accidents reveals the results of such "teachings" when the causes of the accidents are determined, and as might be expected the results very often are far from good. The International Seabed Authority and a number of countries have or are in the process of developing environmental impact assessment guidelines and legislation for seafloor mineral development. The formal decision to grant a project an environmental permit is based on an environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA), culminating in an environmental impact statement (EIS). The EIS needs to be supported by sufficient data upon which an assessment of impacts can be made and mitigation measures developed. Given the remote locations of many seafloor prospects, collection of sufficient environmental data to inform an EIS is often a difficult, expensive and lengthy process.

The introduction of social media platforms has ushered in a new era of interaction and information exchange, which impact business-to-society relationships. Mining companies are closely watching these platforms, as the industry takes a cautious approach to control flows of information. This paper explores the risks, challenges and opportunities of using social media, based on a qualitative mixed methods investigation with stakeholders from the Canadian mining industry. Generational and language barriers, misunderstanding and limited motivation from regulators make implementing social media platforms challenging and risky at an organizational level. The benefits of social media include being able to mobilize communities and share information in real time. Despite the challenges, the study found that 62% of mining stakeholders are incorporating social media tools, mostly in an ad hoc manner. Flexible strategies for transparent communication and public engagement are creating new opportunities for information exchange.

The construction of refineries and gas conservation plants in the general Edmonton area in the early 1950's made available large quantities of by-product liquified petroleum gases (LPG). These gases, together with discovery of increasing reserves of natural gas in the Edmonton area, provided Canadian Chemical Company with two of the necessities for petrochemical production, namely, available and reasonably priced raw materials and fuel. This paper outlines the development of the $83 million Edmonton plant from its origin, together with a brief description of the processes and some of the interesting features involved. Several economic aspects of the petrochemical industry are high-lighted including its importance to the local community and the province. The paper reviews the relationship between the oil and gas industry and petrochemical manufacturing and indicates some of the factors that may affect the future growth of the petro-chemical industry in Wes tern Canada.

Detection and assessment of severe geological anomalies ahead of a longwall face greatly benefits the mining operation. Electromagnetic-based Radio Imaging Method (RIM) is one of the most promising geophysical methods for this task. Based on two decades of development, the latest RIM instrumentation (RIM-IV) has expanded its operational range up to 1,800ft.A site demonstration of the RIM-IV technology was recently conducted within a longwall panel. An extensive ground truth study was performed to evaluate the accuracy of the RIM survey results. This study compared the generated RIM tomograms of attenuation rate with the mapped geological anomalies. Three different approaches have been employed to examine the accuracy of the RIM results and to correlate the measured signal attenuation rates with physical properties of the coal seam. The study shows that the RIM-IV technology is able to identify and delineate those geological features that would severely affect the longwall mining operation.

The increasing demand for pure aluminum and aluminum compounds of industrial quality from kaolinite ore cannot be overemphasized. Nigeria is one of the African countries endowed with abundant solid mineral resources that have not been sufficiently exploited to assist its indigenous industries. A wide array of applications of pure aluminum and its compounds are available, such as paper filling, refractories, adsorbent, catalysis, and paint additives. In this study, the upgrading of a Nigerian biotite-rich kaolinite ore by a hydrometallurgical route was investigated in oxalic acid media. During leaching studies, the effects of parameters including reaction temperature, lixiviant concentration and particle size on the extent of ore dissolution were examined. At optimal conditions (1.0 mol/L C2H2O4, 75 °C), 92.0% of the initial 10 g/L ore was reacted within 120 min. The dissolution curves from the shrinking core model were analyzed and found to conform to the assumption of surface diffusion reaction, and the calculated activation energy of 33.2 kJ/mol supported the proposed model. The unreacted product (~8.0%) analyzed by XRD was found to contain siliceous impurities and could serve as a valuable by-product for certain industries.

Following the blasting fatality on 17 December 2009, Landau Colliery was forced to change from the blasting practices that had been utilized since the start-up of the mine. Since then, attempts have been made to optimize blasting results. The challenge is rooted to the mining environment - during the early life of the mine, mining took place in virgin areas, whereas currently mining is taking place in areas overlying old underground bord and pillar workings. The underground bord and pillar workings aggravate phenomena such as spontaneous combustion, hot holes, and sinkholes. The 2009 fatality was attributed to hot holes causing premature detonation. Landau has been struggling with poor results from their overburden and coal blasts; leading to poor fragmentation of overburden and the PI parting that lies between the No.1 and No.2 coal seams. An extensive literature survey was completed in order to identify possible alternative solutions that could be evaluated for this unique mining environment, which demands a high degree of caution during mining to ensure factors such as dragline stability and personnel safety. The literature survey confirmed that the previous blasting technique, which was mainly characterized by air decking, was indeed the more efficient, although it was deemed unsafe because of the possibility of hot holes and the high sensitivity of detonators. Potential modifications to the blasting technique were modelled in a Microsoft Excel simulation that was available from the mine, and pit visits were conducted in order to determine whether implementation would be a problem. From the model it is evident that results can be improved by changing the current burden and spacing ratio. Visiting the pit revealed that the tie-in pattern and drilling inaccuracies are contributing to problem areas.

The location of a decline shaft portal can have far reaching implications if the geotechnical conditions are not suited for safe and cost effective excavation. Ideally the portal should be positioned in an area where the excavation requires minimal support and the portal can be formed in reasonably competent rock. In many cases, however, the shaft is linked to an underground mining plan and the shaft may have to pass through poor ground conditions. Determining the optimal position at which tunnelling can commence i.e. the portal, is critical and requires a thorough geotechnical investigation. Methods used to acquire information for the assessment of the ground conditions are discussed in this paper. Selection of the appropriate methods is dependent on the anticipated ground conditions, the phase of investigation and restrictions due to site access and budget. Non-invasive techniques are often used during preliminary phases and invasive techniques for the detailed investigation. The methods used during each phase of investigation are discussed. Two case studies are then presented to provide examples of the investigative methods used in two different environments. The first being a flat featureless site with thick soils and deeply weathered bedrock, while the second is a mountainous site with differentially weathered rocky outcrops. Based on these cases, it is clear that an understanding of the geology and geomorphology of the site is vital to the final geotechnical assessment. The Ediacara mineral field is classified as a Mississippi Valley type deposit with stratiform mineralization near the base of the Cambrian beds. Mineral deposition was contemporaneous with sedmentation and reerystallization, and mobilization took place after lithification of the sediments. Several mechanisms of deposition were possible.INTRODUCTIONThe Ediacara mineral field is located in the Mt. James Range approximately 300 miles north of Adelaide, about 12 miles west of Beltana railway siding and 10 miles east of Lake Torrens. It is isolated geographically from similar deposits of equivalent age and environment in the Flinders Range Province (Fig. 1). The climate may be described as semi arid with high summer temperatures and frequent dust storms. Occasional thunder storms are the main source of rain in the summer months.The exact date of discovery is unknown, but is believed to be about middle of the last century. Ulrich (1872) was the first geologist to report on the field. At that time only the southern portion of the field had been prospected (and abandoned). Although the prospects did not appear encouraging Ulrich advised prospecting of the shales and testing beneath the limestone.In 1888, Rosewarne, an Inspector of Mines, visited the Southern Workings and queried whether they were connected with some lode at deeper level or were merely bedded deposits. The first geological map with sections was drawn by H.Y.L. Brown (Brown 1892).Brown recognized three principal rock formations as dolomitic sandstone, kaolinised shales and sandstone, and quartzites and sandstone in descending order. RAILROAD GRANT-MDIERALS. Diatomaceous or infusorial earth when found in such quantity and quality as to render lands containing deposits valuable therefor are mineral lands within the meaning of the mining laws and must be excepted from grants to the Central Pacific Railway Company. RAILROAD GRANT-CLASSIFICATION, If any evidence of minerals is found upon lands within a railroad grant and the showing is sufficient in the opinion of prudent and qualified persons to warrant further exploration and expenditure, with reasonable prospects of success, then the land can not be classified as nonmineral and is not subject to the grant to a railroad company. But where there is no present indication of minerals nor any geological evidence upon which to base a mineral finding, land should not be classified as mineral, or held for further classification and reserved from the railroad's grant, upon the surmise that future prospects might disclose evidences of minerals. INDEMNITY SELECTION BY RAILWAY COMPANY, Under section 3 of the act of July 2, 1864 (13 Stat., 365), and the joint resolution of May 31, 1870 (16 Stat., 378), the Northern Pacific Railway Company could take coal and iron land within its primary or grant limits. It could not base an indemnity selection upon the claim that certain land was coal or iron in ;;haracter, as such land was not lost to it as part of the grant. But the company was authorized to select other lands in lieu of those lost because of their mineral character, but the word "mineral" did not include iron or coal, and, accordingly, the railroad company was entitled to take coal lands under its indemnity selection.

"Sulphide concentrates may exhibit self-heating to various degrees during storage or shipping, the worst cases presenting a serious hazard from fire and SO2 emission. Based on measurements of heating rates on a wide variety of concentrate samples in a special apparatus, combined with field experience, a methodology has been developed which allows concentrates to be rated for their heating potential. This has proven to be very useful in practice, for example, in deciding on the need to take preventive measures. Oxidation under ambient conditions in the presence of moisture initiates heating locally within a stockpile. In the case of highly active materials, such as those that contain abundant pyrrhotite, heating may progress through three stages to temperatures well above 5000C. However, most concentrates show little or no propensity to selfheat. Heating rates were used to estimate values of the heat output, or self-heating capacity (in joules per gram), which sustains the process at each stage. Thermal data from differential scanning calorimetry are also reported. Variables which affect self-heating are discussed and an actual case of heating control on a stockpile by covering is described. A simple apparatus which can be used to simulate stockpiling conditions has been tested successfully and is proposed as a convenient test system.INTRODUCTIONPrevious publications from this laboratory on the evaluation of self-heating in sulphides dealt with tailings backfill (Rosenblum et al. 1982) and waste rock (Rosenblum and Spira 1995). Sulphide concentrates may likewise exhibit self-heating in storage or during shipping. In a comprehensive but dated review, Kirshenbaum (1 968) pointed out the conflicting nature of information on means of controlling the problem, particularly with regard to the application of water and ventilation. Modelling by Simpson (1 97 1) of autogenous heating in stockpiled zinclead concentrate and associated field measurements by Wright et al. (1972) showed that the supply of oxygen by wind and the shape of the piles were the major factors in the development of hot spots. Simpson did not attempt to explain the complex mechanism of self-heating, simply ascribing its onset to oxidation. Pearse (1 980) investigated a potential method of testing for selfheating which consisted of (i) reaction with hydrogen peroxide and (ii) differential thermal anal sis, to characterize the response of concentrates at both ambient and temperatures above 100 C. He found the method sensitive enough to identify the need for careful handling but not to predict ignition. He recommended compacting concentrates and covering stockpiles with plastic sheeting to prevent ingress of air. All these workers recognized the key role played by oxygen and moisture in triggering self-heating."
