The corrosion behaviour of 304L stainless steel laser-cladded with various amounts of ruthenium (Ru) was evaluated in solutions of sulphuric acid and sulphuric acid plus sodium chloride at 25°C and 45°C by open-circuit potential and cyclic potentiodynamic polarization tests. In general, the addition of Ru to the stainless steel increased its corrosion resistance in 1 M H2SO4, as well as in 1 M H2SO4 plus 1 wt% NaCl. This was observed for a number of parameters such as corrosion rate, corrosion potential, open-circuit potential, and current density. However, increasing the amount of Ru added beyond a certain level did not result in further improvement in corrosion protection. For each environment there is an optimal Ru concentration for the best corrosion protection. For example, in 1 M H2SO4 at 25°C, 2.44 wt% Ru shows the least active surface in terms of corrosion. Further research into ruthenium coatings on stainless steels is recommended.

(Spokane Meeting, September, 1909.) DURING. the summer of 1905 I was employed by the U. S. Geological Survey to investigate the geology, Mining, and preparation of barite in most. of the fields of the United States. The Eastern districts have been more or less completely described ; the Virginia field in detail by Thomas L. Watson, in his paper, Geology of the Virginia Barite-Deposits,' and other fields in abstract., including statistics of production and references to current literature, by various authors .2 There have also been published a few details of the occurrence of barite in the lead-mines of Washington county, Mo.3 The other accounts of this district are erroneous and meager, and since this field is the most important one in the United States at the present time, a detailed description of the local geology seems doubly desirable. Barite-deposits are scattered over nearly the whole of Washington and adjoining counties, but. the product, is all mined from the areas indicated upon the sketch-map, Fig. 1, and is shipped from the stations of the St. Louis, Iron Mountain &. Southern railway, between Blackwell and Potosi, from 45 to 60 miles SW. of St.. Louis. The topography is for the most part gently rolling, with slightly graded streams, usually less than 200 ft. below the higher hill-tops. "The environmental impact of the Rabbit Lake project is presented. Baseline data for fish, water, air and radon collected in 1973, 1975, 1980and 1986, are compared with post-development environmental monitoring data. Predicted environmental impacts for the developed Rabbit Lake and B-zone deposits are compared to the actual impacts. INTRODUCTIONThe environmental impact of the Rabbit Lake project has been documented through the years in several submissions to the government agencies. In 1972, the environmental baseline study for the Rabbit Lake area was completed prior to any mining activity at the Rabbit Lake pit (Fig. 1).Sampling concentrated on Hidden Bay and Pow Bay, which received the treated effluent and the waters drained from Rabbit Lake respectively.A second baseline study was done on the Collins Bay area in 1980(Fig. I) in preparation for the mining of the B-zone pit. The detail in this study was considerably greater than the detail in the previous study. Collins Bay and Harrison Peninsula were the areas sampled. The B-zone deposit is being mined at present.With the discovery of the A-zone, D-zone and Eagle Point deposits, it was decided in 1986 to begin proceedings to obtain approval from Saskatchewan's Department of the Environment, and from the Atomic Energy Control Board to develop these deposits.In preparation, a third baseline study of both the Rabbit Lake and Collins Bay areas was done in 1986 and 1987. The emphasis was to establish the baseline at the three new deposits, to quantify the actual impacts of the existing Rabbit Lake operations and to confirm the Collins Bay B-zone (1980) impact predictions. The new deposits will allow us to continue to produce uranium into the future. In January 1988, Saskatchewan approval was received.Since 1975 in the Rabbit Lake area and 1980 in the Collins Bay area, routine environmental monitoring has been done. This has resulted in one of the largest and most comprehensive environmental data bases in North America in mining. By the time the Eagle Point deposit is mined to completion, there will have been data collected for approximately 40 years.Further discussions follow which describe the impacts of the past (1972 to 1984), the present (1985 to 1987) and the future. In addition, the past and present performances and the future plans of the .waste management systems will be discussed."

As natural gas is a waning resource in many places, increased interest has attached to the use of gas for the manufacture of carbon black. Because of a large number of requests for information on the subject, the Bureau of Mines has undertaken a detailed study of the carbon-black industry, covering the mechanical details of commercial methods, with the purpose of increasing the recovery of carbon black by such processes. A study has been undertaken of the economic factors governing the carbon-black industry, the uses and properties of carbon black, the dE)velopment of more Itccurate methods of testing carbon black, microscopic examination of different grades of black, physicochemical study of methods' of mQ.nufacture now in use, and research on new methods of manufacture. Part I of this paper covers the engineering and economic side of the industry; the other phases of the investigation which have been under the direction of G. St. J. Perrott, of the Pittsburgh station.of the United States Bureau of Mines, are discussed in Part II.

"SYNOPSISA discussion of the importance of flotation rate in the analysis of mineral flotation is presented. In particular, the highly interactive nature of the flotation ""system"" is emphasized where there are components of chemistry, equipment, and operating conditions simultaneously involved. It is further shown that: 1) flotation rate must be measured in order to economically optimize the performance of an industrial flotation circuit, 2) that consistent patterns exist in both flotation rate and equilibrium recovery when changing various settings of the system components, 3) that knowledge of these patterns is necessary in order to avoid making system changes that are either self-compensating or dramatically re-enforcing in some particular aspect of performance, and 4) the rate related role of the chemistry component (e.g.frothers and collectors) is often much bigger than is sometimes realized (especially in a negative sense involving overdosing of reagents). INTRODUCTIONFroth flotation is widely usedl-6 in mineral beneficiation processes as a method for separating different types of finely divided solids present in a liquid (usually aqueous) suspension. The approach is based on the contacting of solids with upward moving air bubbles in an agitated vessel where the solids are exposed to chemicals (collectors) which create a condition favoring the attachment of a certain portion of the solids to the air bubbles. This selected portion is then removed in a froth stabilized by chemicals (frothers) and subsequently recovered from the flotation vessel. Depending on the settings of the various components of the flotation ""system"" (see Figure 1) it is possible to achieve a wide range of flotation performance."

Today, with the necessity of timely, on-budget and high quality completion of projects, proper use of construction equipment is essential to ensure project success. Construction equipment places a large monetary burden on the project and if not utilized efficiently, it can result in economic losses. Cranes are one of the most important and expensive operational devices on construction sites. They play a central role, and often activities that rely on crane services fall on the project?s critical path. Currently, material-handling scheduling is done by the crane operator or by an on-duty superintendent using his/hers personal judgment, making the process manual and timeconsuming. Thus, developing an optimal schedule, which considers different dynamic constraints in construction job site, may not be possible based on the current practice. This leads to longer operation times and a negative impact on project cost. This paper presents the latest results of an ongoing study, which aims to design and implement a nearreal time crane operation decision support system to be utilized directly by the crane operator or as an aid for the superintendent in scheduling optimal operation services. This system has several advantages such as maximizing the efficiency of crane operations, guaranteeing the best operation possible to reduce the crane?s travel time, reducing crews and equipment idle time, and minimizing the dependence on subjective human judgments.

The project to rebuild the smelting furnaces at the Anglo American - Barro Alto ferronickel smelter, located in Goias, Brasil, was initiated in September 2013. To optimize the capital cost, while maximizing furnace integrity and robustness, a design basis giving flexibility to ore composition variation was developed in order to ensure sustained nameplate production. The resulting capital efficient, fasttracked project execution was accomplished through the creation of an integrated project team of Anglo American and Hatch through FEL 3 and FEL 4 phases of the project. The integrated team addressed the project challenges through a cooperative and versatile approach, created by access to knowledge, experience and systems in both Anglo American and Hatch. The team could operate at an optimized speed of execution, as demonstrated in the FEL 3 and FEL 4 completion durations, as well as efficiently mitigating any risks of increasing cost or delaying schedule by utilizing lessons learned and team knowledge from Anglo American on the original green-field project and Platinum smelters and Hatch on similar reference ferronickel furnace rebuilds. Other critical drivers of project cost minimization and revenue loss/generation (considering production revenue of each furnace) are scheduled durations for construction, commissioning and ramp-up. The integrated team commenced construction, commission and ramp-up planning almost one year in advance of the shutdown and this paper will discuss the strategies developed to reduce risks and optimize the construction schedule to mitigate revenue loss and optimize ramp-up time to sustained operation at nameplate capacity.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines funded a project which addressed objectives concerning irrigation of native plants and inoculation of native plants with vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi. The specific irrigation objectives were 1) to demonstrate the performance capabilities of solid-set irrigation for reclaimed mineland conditions, and 2) to demonstrate and evaluate three irrigation concepts under two separate water supply conditions. The VAM inoculations were to assess irrigation benefits in establishing VAM relationships for transplanted native species. Following the seasonal demonstration (May to September 1983) at 3 separate mine sites, conclusions were made that apply to the 6 state Western mining industry. The demonstration sites were located in Montana, Wyoming, and New Mexico. Positive conclusions were reached for 1) the use of soil moisture sampling with or without irrigation, and 2) the selection of solid-set sprinklers as the irrigation method. The conclusions about the irrigation concepts and strategy were mixed, due to the short-term (1 season) nature of the project. No conclusions could be reached for the VAM inoculations because the study time was too short.

Application of dynamic simulation for a base metal processing plant is discussed. The plant receives ore of variable quality from two pits and blending had to be applied to maximise recovery. The plant employs multiple stage crushing, screening, dense media separation, two-stage milling, flotation and further filtration. Stockpiles and bunkers are used in the plant to cater for breakdowns and operating delays, the latter being appropriately incorporated in the model. A detail dynamic simulation model was constructed from the rock face to the filtration plant to assist the plant design, notably with definition of the ore blending method, sizing storage capacity and in-plant conveyors. The plant model was broken down to capital equipment items and various feed types and mass balances were tested to ensure that the production target is met. The dynamic simulation tested the proposed blending method, identified bottlenecks, produced risk profiles for all strategic storage facilities and overall helped minimise the project risks and improve confidence in the plant design. The International Society of Explosives Engineers (ISEE) Standards Committee has recently updated both the Field Practice Guidelines for Blasting Seismographs and the Performance Specifications for Blasting Seismographs. The revisions are the result of public and industry input along with recommendations of the ISEE Blast Vibration and Seismograph Section. The committee is comprised of blasting seismograph manufacturers, users and general interest personnel. On an as needed basis, subject matter experts are enlisted to advise the committee. Three phases of activities are necessary for each revision cycle: request for comment on the existing standard, first draft revision of the standard based on public input, and final draft approval by the ISEE Board of Directors. The ISEE standards revision process will be explained and each standard will be discussed along with the significant revisions from the latest revision cycle.

Since its inception, in 1987, the Copper-Cobre series of conferences has established itself as the prime world forum for discussing advances in copper process metallurgy, in particular copper sulfide smelting, copper recovery by leaching and electrowinning and copper electrorefining. All copper producing countries have actively participated in the pyrometallurgy symposia held in the framework of these conferences. In 1999 and 2003, the close to 100 pyrometallurgy papers that were presented had to be accommodated in two volumes. In the present paper, the authors firstly provide a brief historical sketch of the Copper-Cobre conferences and then focus on providing a retrospective look at the dramatic changes that have taken place in copper smelting in the last few decades, primarily as discussed in the Copper-Cobre and precursor conferences pyrometallurgy proceedings. Topics include: the development of autogenous, increasingly more intensive, environmentally sound and energy efficient smelting processes; significant improvements in Peirce-Smith converting practice and at the same time the commercialization of alternative continuous converting routes; the consequent expansion and modernization of smelters; the increasing compliance with strict government environmental regulations in most copper producing regions of the world; the realignment of the copper smelting industry throughout the world; and trends in copper smelting R&D. A look at the future closes these reflections on the contribution of the Copper-Cobre conferences to the advancement of copper smelting technology.

"Rare earth resources usually contain minor amounts of radioactive elements. The most widely recognised sources of radioactivity are associated with thorium and uranium. However, also present in the resources are isotopes of rare earth elements (REE) that are themselves radioactive, including lanthanum (La-138), lutetium (Lu-176) and samarium (Sm-147). These radioisotopes, as well as remnants of the natural thorium (Th-232) and uranium (U-238, U-235) decay series, can contribute to significant levels of radioactivity in mixed REE concentrates and in separated products. Levels such as these can present challenges for transport, transboundary movement, product storage, workers’ health and safety, as well as waste management issues at the facilities that separate out the individual REE’s. These are discussed in this paper. A particularly challenging radioactive isotope is Ac-227 (a decay product in the U-235 decay series). Actinium behaves chemically similar to lanthanides and hence normally concentrates with REE multi-element composites. Reliable analysis of Ac-227 is not widely available and the methodology required to deal with this challenge is briefly described. A principle reason for minimization of radioactive content throughout REE processing is restrictive specifications by concentrate purchasers in order to reduce waste management challenges. Approaches to the minimization of radioisotope content in REE concentrates and separated products are outlined in this paper."

Over the past year or so, a number of mining companies have been meeting to examine the role of research in surface mining and, in particular, how to establish a collaborative research effort for the surface mining industry. A review has been completed which has identified the topics that are of interest to the surface mining companies for undertaking collaborative research. This has identified key subject areas such as Operations & Equipment; Maintenance; Environment & Reclamation; and Stability. Specific research projects for the initial research effort have been selected which include Wireless Data Communications, Analysis and Management; Application of GPS in Mining; and Tires for Heavy Haulers. In addition, attention has also been focussed on finding a suitable low cost, but effective, organization to coordinate and manage the collaborative research. The recently formed CONRAD Organization (Canadian Oilsands Network for Research and Development) appears to be a suitable candidate and discussions are ongoing with that group. This paper provides a summary of the review of surface mining research needs and of the status of the establishment of a collaborative research body for surface mining.

The state-of-the-art in cave seismic monitoring is reviewed, with the latest developments in active seismic monitoring included. Seismic monitoring systems are routinely used by most of the world’s block and panel caving mines to track the cave initiation and progression. The current best practice is to use the cloud of seismic event locations as a proxy for cave growth somewhere below. Problems with event location reliability due to seismic ray bending around the (unknown) cave are side-stepped by using sensors installed above the cave. However, the aseismic gap – the (unknown) distance between actual cave back and seismic event cloud – currently hinders reliable estimation of cave geometry.Velocity inversions using the passive seismic data are inexpensive and should be undertaken more routinely. The straight-ray methods should be used with caution, as the underlying assumptions are invalid in caving environments. The double-difference method is more correct for the caving situation, and there have been some promising results published. Constrained geometric inversions make a lot of sense, but have yet to be demonstrated successfully.Two active seismic source have recently been developed for use in the caving environment: a piezoelectric source for ranges up to a few hundred metres and a pneumatically-powered source for ranges up to a kilometre. These sources produce signals on standard mine seismic sensors that can be used to measure seismic velocity variations down to 0.01 per cent resolution. This allows the cave progression to be monitored by measuring tiny changes to seismic velocities as the rock above the cave is fractured and destressed.CITATION:Lynch, R A, 2016. "In early 2000, CANMET-MMSL was engaged by the Ontario Ministry of Labour (OMOL) to conduct an international study of the practices, in several key mining jurisdictions, of determining the criteria that are used to decide when the wire ropes used in mine hoisting are to be retired from service. Subsequently, the author visited key officials and institutions in Canada, the United States, the Republic of South Africa, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Poland. Material from the Australian province of New South Wales and Hungary was also included.The report that resulted included, among other sections: (1) the history of wire ropes and trends in manufacturing technology; (2) a review of mine hoisting practices; (3) the requirements regarding safety factors; (4) a review of the various operations and their potential future development; (5) the criteria for rope replacement; (6) potential future developments that could take place in both hoisting and rope inspection practices in Canada; and (7) recommendations.Subsequently, the report was issued by OMOL, and as a CD-ROM by CANMETMMSL. In this paper the author presents the key findings and the recommendations made in the study."

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report reviews major developments in continuous haulage technology for underground coal mines. Haulage systems, both in use and under development, were investigated through a comprehensive literature search and visits to mines and manufacturers. The systems include flexible conveyor train, mobile conveyor, monorail bridge conveyor, multiple-unit continuous haulage, extensible, and belt turning systems. Strengths and weaknesses of the systems are assessed in light of their operating under remote control and their application to the computer-assisted continuous mining machine research being conducted by the Bureau. Through mining scenarios, candidate haulage systems are conceptualized to be consistent with the capabilities of the mining machine.
