The centre of the mining operations of the International Nickel Company, Ontario Division is Sudbury, a city of 160,000 population located 240 miles northwest of Toronto (Fig. 1). Within thirty miles of this city and located around the rim of the geological formation known as the Sudbury Basin are the ten underground mines and one open pit operated by the Company (Fig. 2). There are also four developing mines, three in the Sudbury area and one at Shebandowan, near the city of Thunder Bay, Ontario and approximately 150 miles north east of Duluth, Minnesota. In 1971 the mines produced 22,800,000 tons, 20,600,000 tons from underground and the balance from open pits. Also located in the Sudbury District are facilities to extract and refine the metals contained in the ore. There is a nickel refinery located at Port Colborne on Lake Erie. An additional nickel refinery is under construction near Sudbury. Fifteen elements are recovered from the Sudbury ores, nickel, copper, iron, sulphur, gold, silver, cobalt, tellurium and the six platinum group metals, platinum, palladium, iridium, rhodium, ruthenium and osmium. The productivity of the underground driller has increased 500-600% during the past 20 years. This increase is not due so much to improved percussion drills as it is to improved drill support equipment and modernization of mining methods, Efforts to mechanize drilling in mining operations were made as early as the late 1800's; and, patents on rock drill manipulating machinery date back to 1906. However, the great rush to mechanization began in the 1950's when the development of trackless mining methods gave mining engineers and equipment designers their first opportunity to create improved operating conditions for the equipment and to match the equipment with these conditions. Accordingly, this paper will summarize the developments of the past 20 years and will attempt a forecast of developments that can be expected during the next few years.

One of the steps in an ore reserve estimate is customarily a rigorous calculation of the in situ grade of the orebody itself. The result of this calculation is usually reduced by some purely arbitrary factor to force the calculation to agree with the observed grade of ore actually mined. The failure of the calculation to realistically depict the grade of ore actually extracted is in many instances not the result of either an incorrect calculation procedure or of sloppy mining practice, but is a direct consequence of unsuspected irregularities in the contact between the orebody and the surrounding wall rock. A pattern of holes spaced at 1.5-3.Om foot intervals, drilled as part of a pre-development program, will often reveal that a presumed "regular' ore/waste contact is, in fact, so highly irregular that it will be next to impossible to separate ore from waste during mining. In such an instance, 'fingers' of waste projecting into the mining block will substitute for equal volumes of ore left outside the mining limits. As a result, the grade of material actually mined will be less than the grade envisioned for the orebody. The volume of waste substituting for ore in the mining block is about 0.4X, where X = the average error in projecting the ore/waste contact between alternate holes in the test pattern, and is expressed in units of volume per unit of area of the contact surface.

Water occupies a dual role in our industrial society. It is the indispensable raw material, essential to life itself. It is equally an industrial nuisance, interfering with the production of industrial minerals, making construction difficult, flooding valuable land, and generally producing problems because it is in the wrong place at the critical time. The legal position of water as a nuisance, and the counter measures to be taken, have been well established procedures for determining the responsibility for damage caused by water, and the organization of drainage districts and flood control and levee districts have been legally tested many times. Thus there is rather adequate legal doctrine concerning water, the common enemy. But recently efforts have been made to regularize the position of water as a useful, industrial, commodity. Such laws are not new to the West, where the doctrine of appropriation for beneficial use is slowly becoming the water law. Elsewhere the University of Michigan has produced a "model" water law and efforts are being made to induce all of the states to use this law, or a slight variation of it, as the basis for legislation. There are many serious criticisms of the proposed "model"-law, and the writer strongly opposes many of the provisions. But the fact remains that water is, in itself, so useful and essential that laws have been, and will be, passed to insure the orderly development of our water resources and to prevent waste. The, most important aspect of these "water-use" laws is that, wise or unwise, the existing laws and the proposed laws have been "water oriented". "Water oriented" means that it has been tacitly assumed that the beneficial use of water, either surface water or ground water, is the overriding consideration.

In this paper, autogenous grinding is defined as the combined crushing and grinder of a run-of-mine ore or the product from a primary crusher, in a single stage grinding mill. This is in contrast to pebble milling where pebbles are substituted for steel balls to grind a ball mill size feed. The autogenous mill to compete in efficiency with normal methods of crushing and grinding must not use greater power, must use less labor and steel, and must produce an equivalent product.

The results obtained for the selective flocculation or flotation of natural ores do not usually agree with the corresponding properties of the constituent minerals when present alone. This is mainly due to the presence of dissolved mineral species which can interact in many ways with other components in the system and alter their behavior. In this paper, the effect of dissolved species on the flocculation and electrokinetic properties of sulfide minerals is disscussed. Dissolved Fe, Cu and Ni species are found to affect the properties of chalcopyrite, pentlandite, millerite, pyrrhotite and covellite in certain pH range. These effects are interpreted in terms of species adsorption leading to activation or depression of reagents, surface precipitation and complexation of species, etc.

The advent of Nuclear Energy has caused a phenomenal growth in the uranium mining industry. To keep abreast of this surge the mining industry has located many ore bodies, determined the best types of mining adaptable to this particular type of ore and developed a highly specialized type of operation. But, has the mining industry gone far enough in the planning? Has ?built-in? safety been included in the efficient methods of operation? Preplanning safety in the mining industry, as in all industries, takes engineering and ingenuity combined with the experience and cooperation of all concerned. A system of mining can be planned on a map and it will look good. However, when the actual mining takes place, conditions may be such that deviations from the original plans may be required because of excessive water faults or other conditions encountered. With safety we may also be required to change, to conform to the characteristics of a particular operation. People in the mining industry are well aware that loose back has killed miners each year. This condition occurred in practically all types of mines. The condition is not new to us. It is also known that explosives, haulage, machinery and conditions common to all types of mining have taken a heavy toll of human life in mining. In addition to these hazards in the uranium mines, the hazard of radon is also present, Radon is a radioactive gas liberated from ores containing radium. This gas is released into the active workings by the blasting or breaking up of the ore. Sometimes it is caused by radium contaminated water seepage from abandoned workings or from the ore body itself. Until the action of this gas on the human was known, many miners were affected. Un- less adequate precuations are taken to protect the people in these mines,, they may be exposed to this hazard, Health researchers made a study of this substance to determine how it would affect the health of the men, They also studied men who had worked in previous years, in mines known to have contained radioactive materials. All of this research contributed to the present knowledge of radon and its daughter products. It is not flammable nor explosive, but, if allowed to enter the body through the respiratory organs it can cause serious damage. Mines have been operated in the past and are still being operated, which were known to contain explosive and noxious gases, indicating that this problem can be controlled. Several states have instituted laws that make it mandatory to provide adequate ventilation and use of monitoring devices to limit radon and its daughter products to a maximum of 300 micro-microcuries per liter of air. This is considered a safe limit for sustained periods of human exposure. While the findings of research do not prove conclusively that the inhalation of excessive radon or its daugher products cause lung cancer, indications point to this as a possibility, particularly radium A and radium C1 of the daughter products. The threshold limits set by law in most uranium producing states are believed to be safe. In a few years, when tests and data now in the process of collection by interested state officials and laboratories is complete, these limits may be found to be ready for revision. Studies such as these take time. At present, the limits that are used are based upon estimates. The permissible limits of exposure to radon and daughter products include a large safety factor. It is considered that a good supply of fresh air delivered to the working places, adequate dust control, the sealing of unused or abandoned workings, the removal of mine water which is generally contaminated and a safe waiting period after blasting, will hold to a minimum the dangers from this source. There are, of course, problems accompanying each of these procedures. For example, the ventilating of untimbered raises and bringing fresh, uncontaminated air to the working places may be a problem. However, a good mining man can solve these problems as they apply in each particular operation. From the information available at the present time, the daughter products containing polonium and emitting alpha radiation, may be a health hazard. Fortunately, the half life of most of the daughter products is short, however, radium D has a half life of 22 years and presents a problem of contamination in the storage of old tailings. So we can see that failure to comply with the accepted good mining practices may have harmful effects on the health of miners. It is gratifying to note the interest in this potential hazard by the officials in the uranium ore producing states, who are making extensive studies and keeping records of the men who work in this type of mining. This all provide information necessary for preplanning safety. By contrast, little has been accomplished to control the injuries and deaths from some other factors connected with most underground mining operations. This paper describes research and development efforts leading to a wet process for the beneficiation of Western talc ores in which the values are primarily present as soft, platy talc mineral. The mineralogy of the ore, as it relates to the logic of utilizing an uncomplicated, attrition-scrubbing sedimentation process is described. Bench-scale laboratory testwork and a pilot-plant test program are described. The pilot-plant program included production of several tons of products. The thickened talc slurries were very difficult to dewater prior to the drying step. Dewatering difficulties were overcome by use of a high-speed centrifuge. The centrifuge cake was dried either by tray, flash or spray drying. The successful use of one high-grade talc product as titanium dioxide extender in paper is discussed. The talc product has extremely low abrasion values, an important characteristic for minerals used in paper manufacture. It is concluded that this wet process for soft talc ores is capable of producing high-purity talc products for paint, paper, cosmetics and other industrial uses re-quiring very pure soft talc.

The installed world steel capacity remains 20% above the present world steel demand. Energy costs have risen enormously in recent years, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2. The role of the sinter plant is becoming more exacting as it becomes vital to minimize energy consumption. Continuous grate sintering, although pioneered in the United States, has always been the second grade burden preparation route, due to the predominance of easily up- graded ores which were more readily agglomerated by pelletizing. To achieve blast furnace performance up to best world standards, sinter of consistent high quality must be produced with virtually no atmospheric pollution. The plants must be capable of achieving this demanding level of quality whilst utilizing high proportions of revert materials, iron ore concentrates and fluxes . However, with the present difficult economic climate in the iron and steel industry, the economic production of sinter and ultimately steel is becoming increasingly important. The iron and steel industry is looking closely at costs and is identifying the need for sinter plants that will cope with a wide range of sintering materials to give the cheapest blend at varying output levels dependent upon demand. In order to meet these requirements, sinter plant builders are designing plants with particular attention on flexibility.

The growing role of Colombia as a major supplier of internationally traded steam coal has been widely discussed in the industry. Although Colombian coal has been produced and exported in small quantities for a number of years, Colombia's position as a major coal exporter began in earnest in 1985 with the first commercial exports from the Cerrejon North Block Project. By way of background: ? The mine is located on the Guajira peninsula in Northeast Colombia, about 90 miles from the coast, as shown in Figure 1. ? In addition to the mine itself, the project involves construction of a dedicated railroad and port, which form a modern, efficient and integrated system. ? The Project is embodied in a 50/50 Association Contract between International Colombia Resources (Intercor), a wholly owned subsidiary of Exxon, and Carbocol, the Colombian state coal company. Intercor and Carbocol share investment and operating expenses equally and Intercor has the additional responsibility of managing operations on behalf of both partners. Each partner is entitled to 50% of the coal produced, and each markets its share separately. ? The project is a multi-seam, truck and shovel operation, based on large reserves (2-3 billion tonnes') of high quality bituminous coal. ? Exports began in the first quarter of 1985 at modest levels through what we call Early Coal Facilities, designed and constructed apart from the permanent coal handling system. ? Production will increase rapidly in each of the next few years, reaching the design capacity of 15 Mt per year in 1939. Based on available resources, however, the resource will support expansion, and continued growth n production into the 1990s appears feasible.

An attempt was made to extract niobium oxide from ~98.5% Nb2O5 using solvent extraction processes. Nb2O5 is used as the feed material in carbothermic reduction processes aimed at producing high-homogeneity, super-conductor-grade niobium on a laboratory scale. The Nb metal used for superconductor applications requires a residual resistivity ratio (RRR) > 300, which in turn needs a stringent purity of Nb and allows impurities (substitutional and interstitial) in ppm levels only. In this paper, solvent extraction of niobium was studied under various experimental conditions, such as effect of different extractants, concentration of methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) in the organic phase and concentration of various acids. The concentrate was digested with hydrofluoric acid, with ammonium fluoride (NH4F) as a stripping agent. The extraction of niobium from low hydrofluoric- (HF-) bearing solution was found to be low. Thus, various concentrations of hydrofluoric acid and sulfuric acid, as well as hydrofluoric acid and hydrochloric acid, were investigated towards obtaining a maximum amount of niobium in the filtrate and a minimum amount of niobium in the residue. A McCabe - Thiele plot for extraction of niobium from the aqueous phase, HF-bearing solution using HCl with 85% MIBK in kerosene has been constructed to determine the O:A ratio and the number of stages of the process.

Recycling of such municipal solid wastes as glass containers, metal cans, and newspapers has received increasing attention recently. However, municipal solid wastes account for only 1% of the total solid waste stream in the United States. The remainder includes hazardous and non-hazardous industrial wastes. Generators of industrial wastes are facing higher landfill costs. Future liability potential, and public image concerns which are forcing them to seek innovative and often profitable solutions to minimize, reuse, and recycle their waste streams. Opportunities for the mining industry in industrial recycling include recovery of mining wastes and by-products, and utilization of mineral products for treating waste streams.

Techniques useful in operations, analysis are applied to the problem of planning an exploration program. The model used treats mineral exploration as a Markov process, and maximization of gain is the criteria determining the optimum program. The mathematical description of the model and the optimization are first worked out. Application of the mathematics to several simple examples is given. Finally, comparison of the data necessary to use this operations analysis with the available data shows that the method can only be a guide to planning an exploration program.

Eldorado Gold Corporation of Vancouver, B.C. owns and operates three gold mines. The Sao Bento underground gold mine in Minas Gerais State, Brazil produced 105,907 ounces in 1997. The La Colorada and La Trinidad open pit, heap leach mines in Mexico produced over 83,000 ounces in 1997. With a deteriorating gold market plaguing the industry throughout 1997 Eldorado had to take critical measures at each mine to enhance gold production while lowering cash operating costs. Each mine had its own unique problems to confront. This case study will discuss three distinct courses of action taken at the three mine sites.

The Wharton No. 2 Mine of Eastern Gas and Fuel Associates is located about 60 miles south of Charleston, West Virginia in Boone County. Daily production is 6,000 T.P.D. on a two-shift basis. The Hernshaw Seam is mined by conventional equipment with one continuous miner in areas where conditions are suitable. The plant is on Cow Creek .Branch of Pond Fork, which in turn flows into the Little Coal River at Madison, West Virginia. When the mine was opened in 1948, plans were developed to build a dual Baum jig plant complete with mechanical and thermal drying, and because full production would not be reached for several years, it was decided to install only one Baum jig setup although the complete structure was erected. This phase of the plant was placed into operation early in 1949, The rated capacity was about 300 T.P.H. of 5" x 0 raw feed to the jig. Being a drift mine, the 10-ton mine cars are dumped at the Headhouse, crushed to 8" in a double roll crusher, conveyed 780 feet downhill to the picking .house where the +5" slate is removed by pickers. All coal is crushed to 5" and 5" x 0 is conveyed 150 feet to the cleaning plant. Further describing the plant growth, the second jig setup was installed in 1954 to clean the increased production. During this operating period, exhaustive tests had ,been run on the plant bleed which was an overflow from the large sludge tank located inside the plant, When the second jig addition was undertaken, 5-14' diameter and 12-8" diameter cyclones with a 9-disc filter were installed for the solids recovery and water clarification system, However, the circuit was not closed and a bleed of part of the overflows from the 8" diameter cyclones was still necessary, To comply with the State Water Commission regulations on stream pollution abatement, four pumps in series were installed to discharge the waste water behind the refuse pile.
