The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study to evaluate the effectiveness of automatic water sprinkler systems in the extinguishment of incipient conveyor belt fires under ventilated conditions. Large-scale experiments were conducted using a double strand conveyor belt configuration. Standard response, pendent-type sprinklers, with activation temperatures of 100°C, were installed above and between the two strands of belting, in accordance with Federal standards for sprinkler system installations in belt drive areas. Experiments at airflows of 1.1 and 4.6 m/s showed that the sprinklers activated later, the peak heat release rate was larger, and more betting was consumed at the higher airflow. In experiments with 74°C, fast response, directional sprinklers, the sprinklers activated at the same heat release rate for both high and low airflows, but the peak heat release rate and amount of bett consumed was slightly higher at the lower airflow. Experiments were also conducted with 100 °C, standard pendent sprinklers installed above the top belt, in accordance with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 123 for sprinkler system installations in conveyor belt drive areas in underground coal mines. In these experiments, the heat release rate and amount of betting consumed was larger at the higher airflow.

High-purity gypsum of Permian age crops out in three major gypsum districts of western Oklahoma. The northwest and southwest districts have important reserves in the Blaine Formation, whereas reserves of the west-central district are in the Cloud Chief Formation. Gypsum beds of the Blaine Formation typically are 10 to 30 feet thick, 95 to 99 percent pure, and interbedded with shales that are 2 to 30 feet thick. The base of the Cloud Chief Formation consists of a massive bed of gypsum that typically is 20 to 100 feet thick and is 92 to 97 percent pure. Anhydrite is present in the sulfate beds, beneath 20 to 100 feet of overburden, at a number of places in all three districts. Total gypsum reserves in the three districts are estimated at 48 billion short tons. These reserves are well suited for open-pit mining or quarrying, because gypsum typically forms hills in the semiarid climate of western Oklahoma, and the gypsum layers are nearly flat lying, without folds or faults. Seven companies currently mine a total of 1.0 to 1.4 million tons of Oklahoma gypsum each year for wallboard, for plaster, as a retarder in portland cement, and as a soil conditioner.

A principal long-term goal of this laboratory is to achieve a detailed understanding at the molecular level of the microbial-dependent solubilization of minerals. Three recent advances in this research are summarized. (i) An in situ electrolytic procedure is described whereby large quantities of autotrophic iron-oxidizing organisms may be achieved for fundamental or applied studies. Over 600 grams wet weight of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans were harvested from a single 55-gallon growth vessel. (ii) A basis is presented for classifying some 70 different iron-oxidizing bacteria into one of 4 categories, depending on the type of redox-active electron transport proteins expressed during aerobic respiration on reduced iron. Comparative spectroscopic analyses indicated that different electron transport mechanisms exist in different genera and species of acidophilic bacteria that respire on iron. (iii) A method is introduced to investigate the binding interaction between bacteria and minerals, based on changes in the electrokinetic properties of the two species. Preliminary experiments indicated that the electrophoretic mobilities of pyrite and Thiobacillus ferrooxidans were both altered when the two colloid particles were mixed prior to the actual electrokinetic measurement. The need for more basic information regarding all aspects of the microbial-dependent solubilization of minerals is evident.

Although production generally satisfies demand for rare earths, new markets may make undeveloped resources, particularly those rich in yttrium, more interesting. A Precambrian carbonalite orebody at Mountain Pass, California, has been the world's largest rare earth producer. Minor rare earth production comes from titanium placer mining in Florida and uranium mining in Canada. Prior to operations at Mountain Pass, North American production was mostly from placer deposits that constitute large, low-grade rare earth resources. Newly discovered North American rare metal resources in peralkaline igneous rocks are potential yttrium producers. Most of these resources are in a continent-wide belt of anorogenic magmatic rocks approximately coeval with mineralization at Mountain Pass. Other untapped rare each resources in North America are generally light rare earth-dominated and small or of low grade.

Pull-off forces were measured for 8-9 pm diameter polystyrene (PSI particles on smooth spin- coated polystyrene films and hexadecanethiol (HDT) self-assemble monolayer surfaces using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Three parameters were controlled during experimentation: (i) the maximum applied load pressing the particle onto the substrate was varied from 50 to 4,000 nN, (ii) loading/unloading rate for the particle to attach and separate from the substrate varied from 0.01 to 9.3 Hz, and (iii) contact time for particle to reside on the substrate surface before retracting the particle to separate it from the surface changed from I µsecond to 200 seconds. the pull-off forces increased with increasing applied loading, increasing loading/unloading rate, and increasing contact time for the PS particle on PS film and on HDT monolayer. The PS particles experience elastic and plastic deformations duringpull-08 force measurements. Plastic deformation is primarily associated with flattening of surface irregularities. The results obtained in this research suggest that the particle-substrate contact areas of the magnitude comparable to those predicted by the JKR contact mechanical model can be reached in the AFM experiments by using high applied loads and long particle-substrate contact times. This result re-opens the prospect of' using AFM for studying surface energies of deformable micro-particles, even if the micro-particles have small irregularities on the surface.

INTRODUCTION For the past 25 years, tunnel support requirements have frequently been determined, at least in North American practice, by classifying the rock according to the system proposed by Terzaghi (1), using one or more of the 8 Rock Conditions which he defined, the rock load then being selected within the range given for each Condition. However, there is a lack of published data comparing Terzaghi loads with actual measured rock loads, and it would appear that the degree of conservatism, or otherwise, of the Terzaghi approach is very often unknown. Excavation of 4 large diameter tunnels at the Tarbela Dam Project in Pakistan afforded an opportunity to compare Terzaghi and measured loads, through instrumentation of the steel ribs installed for temporary support, and by classification of the geology exposed during the tunnelling operations. In addition, the deformation of the rock surrounding the tunnels was monitored during excavation by means of borehole extensometers installed prior to the start of tunnelling. This paper describes the tunnel instrumentation and the results obtained therefrom, and relates these results to the Terzaghi load coefficients. The stability of underground openings for deep mines is critical, since incorrect orientation or geometry of shaft, stope, and accessways often results in the failure of openings due to high stress concentrations. Current state-of-the-art procedures for the design of underground openings are largely based on rules of thumb, experience, and trial and error. Rules of thumb are invariably based on the past experience of the designer and may not remain optimal as the depth and complexity of mine workings increase. Often, as conditions change, and as the interaction between geology, in-situ stress conditions, and mine openings grows more complex, the cost of maintaining structural integrity becomes prohibitive. Existing design procedures for deep mines are rapidly becoming inadequate as mines are worked at greater depths. For example, in the Coeur d' Alene Mining District, several million dollars are spent for inspection, repair, and maintenance on a regular schedule, largely as a result of inadequate design. In these types of situations, it is of critical importance that a new design methodology be developed for the layout and design of underground openings.

Mineral processing plant operators are faced with the necessity to choose between many different possibilities for plant improvement. Only a few such possibilities, however, can be tested on the industrial site. Steady-state simulators make it possible to assess the effects of several different flowsheet modifications in a few days, thus helping the process engineer to make his choice implement the solution that seems the most appropriate and check it. The example described here is the crushing and grinding circuit of the Shila Gold Mine, jointly owned by CEDIMIN SA and BUENAVENTURA SA, in Peru. Several possible modifications for the purpose of increasing capacity have been simulated and the results assessed in terms of technical quality, investment costs and energy consumption. The best solution indicated by the USIM PAC simulator was implemented and gave a 20% increase in capacity with a pay-back time of two months.

The first recorded discovery of diamonds in Australia was in 1851 from New South Wales. Subsequent prospecting has shown alluvial occurrences of diamond to be relatively widespread through much of the Tasman Fold Belts of Eastern Australia and production to date is estimated to be some 500 000 carats from a number of 'small alluvial fields. Despite extensive exploration though, no primary rock source carrying significant diamond contents has ever been confirmed in Eastern Australia. Conversely, diamond exploration of the older Western and Central Cratons of Australia over the past 30 years has discovered 12 fields containing 360 kimberlites, lamproites and lamprophyric volcanic pipes, dykes and other intrusives, of which 180 have been confirmed to be diamondiferous. Only one pipe however, the 1200 Ma high grade Argyle lamproite and associated near-by alluvials, has proved to be economically exploitable with current annual production of 40 million carats valued at approximately US$400 million. Production from the open-pit will be sustainable until at least 2003. This paper briefly summarizes the history of diamond discovery in Australia, principal diamondiferous provinces and deposits, current exploration activities and the potential for future discoveries.

INTRODUCTION The Newtown Creek Pollution Control Project (P.W. 53) is a major system of facilities designed to collect wastewater from large areas of the Boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, then channel it to a treatment plant where the wastewater is processed and discharged. The North Branch interceptor collects wastewater along the east side of Manhattan and transports it downstream to a Junction Chamber at Avenue "D" near East 13th Street. The South Branch interceptor similarly collects wastewater from the southern part of Manhattan Island on both east and west sides of Manhattan and transports it to the same Junction Chamber from where both flows are delivered to the adjacent Manhattan Pumping Station which pumps the wastewater under the East River to a treatment plant in Brooklyn. This system is shown in Figure 1. Construction of the Manhattan Pumping Station began in the Summer of 1966 and was delayed by a number of mishaps. In the vicinity of the North and South Interceptors, approximately 3,060 cubic meters (4,000 cubic yards) of soil flowed into the excavation: 765 cubic meters (1,000 cubic yards) at the North Branch Interceptor, and approximately 2,300 cubic meters (3,000 cubic yards) at the South Interceptor. These movements were accompanied by surface subsidence, collapse, or both. On June 4, 1973, while pumping station construction was underway, approximately five to seven cubic yards of sand entered the junction chamber through a temporary bulkhead valve in the North Branch Interceptor.

INTRODUCTION The tailing dam is part of the SOHIO L-Bar Uranium Mine and Mill located about 70.8 kilometers (44 miles) west of Albuquerque in northwestern New Mexico. The dam location is shown on Figure 1. The tailing dam is one of the last upstream method dams permitted in the industry. Design and construction aspects of the project, as well as operation and maintenance considerations, are reviewed herein. Since initial construction, SOHIO Western Mining Company and Woodward-Clyde Consultants have developed several modifications and improvements in the dam's operating and monitoring procedures. This work has been done in coordination with the New Mexico State Engineer's Office and in accordance with recommendations in a report done for the Corps of Engineer's Phase I Dam Inspection Report. Modifications and improvements described should be of particular interest to owners and operators of other tailing dams utilizing the upstream method of deposition. The tailing facility was designed for a 10-year life to provide an ultimate storage capacity of 6 1/2 billion kilograms (7 1/2 million short tons) in an area of about 180 acres. A plan view of the tailing dam is shown on Figure 2. The tailing consists of approximately 75% sand size material and 25% fines (material passing the No. 200 sieve). The tailing dam includes a small earth starter dam with raises of the dam accomplished using tailing deposited by upstream method techniques. The starter dam is a homogeneous embankment about 610 meters (2000 feet) long, a maximum height of 12 meters (40 feet) and 2 1/2:1 (horizontal to vertical) upstream and downstream slopes. The starter dam contains an internal drainage system which includes a near vertical chimney drain connected to horizontal finger drains. The University of Idaho, Department of Metallurgical and Mining Engineering, through the Generic Mineral Technology Center, has been engaged in mine design research at the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, Idaho. The purpose of the research is to develop and implement the longwall underhand cut-and-fill mining method for conditions at the Mine. The longwall underhand cut-and-fill mining method involves backfilling mined stopes with a compacted tailings-cement mix. After the backfill has been allowed to cure, mining is resumed from underneath. Horizontal stresses in the Lucky Friday Mine are exceptionally high and rock bursts are a common problem. Beus and Chan (1980) have reported a 2:1 horizontal to vertical stress ratio at the mine with a 65-MPa (9,500-psi) maximum horizontal stress at the 1,295-m (4,250-ft) level. Using this mining method under these stress conditions, it is desirable to have a backfill material that has sufficient strength to safely carry the high horizontal wall loads while minimizing external steel supports.

The Bulagidun copper-gold system occurs in Tertiary andesitic volcanic rocks. It is located (figure 1, from Curless, 1991) ca. two days walk from the coast in an isolated area on the northerly slope of the main range of mountains, in steep terrain dissected by erosion. Detailed and district-scale exploration from 1988 to 1991 by BHP Minerals defined a small, sub-economic resource of gold and copper. One preliminary estimate of the resource in bedrock suggests 14.4 million tons at 0.68 grams / Tonne Au and 0.61% Cu, in multiple small bodies.

"BACKGROUND In the event of an explosion or fire in an underground mine, workers can be exposed to a deficiency of oxygen, an excess of carbon monoxide, or both. These threats can occur as separate conditions or simultaneously. A lack of oxygen in the breathing air can only be addressed via the use of a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) acting as a source of oxygen. An excess of carbon monoxide can also be addressed via the use of an SCBA, but if the threat occurs in isolation (that is, the atmosphere still contains sufficient oxygen to support life) and the concentration of the threat gas is not extreme (< 2%) then the carbon monoxide threat can also be addressed by the use of a filter self-rescuer (FSR). Used together, the SCBA and FSR offer a far more efficient and universally capable life support system than when used in isolation. However, the SCBA does not take advantage of the fact that the surrounding atmosphere likely contains some level of useable oxygen; i.e., the SCBA always supplies the total required oxygen from its limited supply, resulting in a ceiling on its useful life regardless of the level of oxygen in the surrounding air. To address this technology gap, what is needed is a ""smart"" SCBA that provides filtration and catalytic protection against threat gasses and has an extended duration life-sustaining oxygen inhale stream independent of the threat content and oxygen deficiency of the surrounding atmosphere. DEVELOPMENT Developed under contract with NIOSH the Smart Escape SCBA is comprised of three major components including; 1) oxygen supply, 2) oxygen sensing & dosing electronics and, 3) a CO catalyst and carbon bed broad spectrum FSR. The SCBA is designed as a hybrid system that provides non-toxic breathing air by using an approved Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear filter self-rescuer and a catalyst to convert high levels of carbon monoxide to harmless carbon dioxide (CBRN FSR/CO). In addition, the Oxygen Sensing & Dosing Electronics (OSDE) package adds sufficient oxygen to make up for deficiencies detected in the ambient air (Figure 1). By making use of the ambient oxygen, less oxygen is required for a one-hour unit life. This means that the Smart Escape SCBA fits in a smaller and lighter package than a similar-duration conventional Self-Contained Self-Rescuers (SCSR). Alternatively, taking advantage of available ambient oxygen could offer a significant increase in working duration in a unit with the same size as current SCSRs. The research performed under this NIOSH contract involved numerous tasks including: (1) definition of performance and system requirements for the Smart Escape SCBA, including keeping environmental stressors within acceptable ranges, providing at least one hour of breathable oxygen supply, and using a mask or hood that allows high-quality voice communication; (2) designing, building, and evaluating prototype units to support extensive bench top testing at Avon Protection and third party labs to demonstrate the device’s capabilities; (3) building sufficient quantity of Smart Escape SCBAs designed to be intrinsically safe (per MSHA criteria); (4) testing and evaluation by the National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL)."

Underground mining has the potential to be one of the more dangerous industries in the United States and the world. Following recent disasters in Sago, WV; Darby, KY, and Crandall Canyon, UT, the mining industry was reminded of the need for a system to allow trapped miners awaiting rescue to survive following a disaster. To address this need, Battelle has developed a Mine Barrier Survival System (MBSS) that surpasses all current technologies and sets a new standard for keeping miners alive in the event of a fire, flood, explosion or collapse. The MBSS creates a temporary refuge for miners who cannot escape by using inflatable barriers and a post-fire atmosphere scrubbing system to define the ?safe haven? and remove CO2 and CO while replacing oxygen and providing heat. Current personal-protective systems in use are designed to provide breathing air for only a few hours when, realistically, it may take days for rescue teams to reach trapped miners. Battelle?s MBSS is designed to aid up to 15 miners for four days.

Over the past decade, a substantial effort has been made to improve the air quality inside enclosed cabs of both underground and surface mobile mining equipment to reduce respirable dust exposures by the equipment operators. As part of this effort, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, (NIOSH) completed a comprehensive laboratory study that determined the significant factors for cab filtration and pressurization systems. From this information, a major underground mining equipment manufacturer designed a filtration and pressurization system that was incorporated into the enclosed cabs of its equipment. A long-term evaluation was performed on the effectiveness of this filtration and pressurization system to improve the air quality in the enclosed cabs of two different pieces of equipment, a face drill and a roof-bolter machine, at an underground limestone mine. This long-term evaluation demonstrated a significant reduction in dust levels between outside-to-inside cab respirable dust concentrations. During this evaluation, a modification to remove one of the filters on the roof-bolter machine simplified the design without sacrificing the system’s efficiency. Tests using particle count instruments performed during nonproduction time periods on both pieces of equipment indicated protection factors greater than 100 when comparing respirable-sized dust particles inside the enclosed cab relative to outside.

Rare-earth elements have some unique properties that are used in many common applications, such as TV screens and lighters. In the 1970&apos;s, rare-earths began to be used in a new generation of magnetic materials that have very unique characteristics. Not only were these stronger in the sense of attraction force between a magnet and mild steel (high induction, B), the coercivity (He) is extremely high. This property makes the magnetization of the magnet body composed of a rare-earth element alloy very stable, i.e., it cannot easily be demagnetized.

In 1986, a subsidiary of Echo Bay Mines Ltd. purchased the McCoy property, 55 km (35 miles) southwest of Battle Mountain, NV. Echo Bay then launched a two-year, $1 15-mil lion capital program to build a mill to extract gold and silver from high-grade ore mined in two open pits - the original McCoy pit and a more recent discovery, the Cove. Engineering on a new mill began in 1987 with the facility coming on line in 1989. It was comprised of a semiautogenous (SAG) mill and ball mill grinding, leaching, flotation, counter current decantation (CCD) and Merrill-Crowe processes. The mill started up on McCoy ore, a rocky material that settled very well in the new CCD thickener system. Production levels were maintained at about 7.2 kt/d (8000 stpd). The situation changed as the McCoy ore played out and increasing amounts of material from the Cove pit-with its oxide, sulfide and carbonaceous ore - were fed to the mill. The problem was the high clay content of the Cove ore. The new ore immediately created production problems, mainly loss of control on the CCD thickeners. With the McCoy pit slated to be shut down in early 1991, it was essential to find a way to efficiently process the Cove ore. Initially, the only way to regain control of the thickeners was to slow down the processing rate and increase flocculant usage, thereby getting the solids to settle in the thickeners. But this had its cost. Production dropped to about 5.9 kt/d (6500 stpd), additional operators were needed and flocculant costs, on occasion, would reach an unacceptable $80,000 per month. The Bacterial Oxidation (BIOX®) process for the pre-treatment of refractory ores for gold recovery developed by Genmin, the mining division of Gencor, has been operating successfully at the Fairview mine since October 1986. The continuous operation of a pilot plant at Genmin Process Research has resulted in further process developments to improve plant operating efficiencies. These new developments which include a higher solids content of the pulp feed to BIOX®, lower retention times, higher operating temperatures, lower power utilization for oxygen dispersion .and reduced nutrient addition have all been successfully implemented on the Fairview plant.lt has furthermore been confirmed that the arsenic precipitate formed in the neutralization of effluent solutions complies to the United States of America EPA standards. Continuous cyanidation pilot plant work conducted on BIOX® product has indicated that cyanide consumption can be drastically decreased if a continuous flowsheet is implemented in preference to a batch leaching system.

In 1959, The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (Aus. I.M.M.) was asked by the Federal Government of Australia and the State Government of South Australia to join in the formation and management of a new contract research organization which was subsequently named The Australian Mineral Development Laboratories (Arndel) ? This body was formerly the Research and Development Branch of the South Australian Department of Mines which had been set up to develop the Radium Hill uranium deposit. It had then gone into contract R&D and the State felt that it would be more appropriate for the Branch to become a separate national organization. The Aus. I.M.M. decided that a professional institute could not participate directly in Arndel and, as there was no other suitable industry group to do so, it formed the. Australian Mineral Industries Research Association Limited (AMIRA). AMIRA held its first Annual General Meeting in September 1959 when the first Council was elected and the Memorandum and Articles of Association were adopted. The initial task of AMIRA was to raise guarantees of work or cash from its members to underwrite Arndel for the first five years of operation. The Federal and State Governments also provided guarantees and Arndel commenced operations in January 1960.
