In 2003, MSHA initiated a survey of the 11 Coal Mine Safety and Health Districts to develop a database for the implementation of Atmospheric Monitoring Systems (AMS) in underground coal mines. Mine operators continue to realize the benefits of improved fire detection capabilities, as the number of mines using the systems, as well as the percentage of mines, continues to increase. Fire detection data and new technology implemented in underground coal mines is discussed as well as regulatory compliance, diesel exhaust considerations and hydrogen interference in carbon monoxide detection.

On account of geological characteristics, Brazil is a country of large deposits of high quality kaolin, with the larger ones being located in its northern region. In the last years, kaolin beneficiation and production area is receiving great investments, aiming at a high quality kaolin production to be used in the paper industry, mainly intended for the foreign market. After the conclusion of expan- sion programs and with the advent of new production areas, Brazil is very soon expected to come in second place in the kaolin world production ranking.

This paper provides a summary of a two-day conference held in New Orleans in March 1980, entitled "Tunnel Instrumentation: Benefits and Implementation." The conference addressed two major questions: First, what are the benefits of using instrumentation during tunnel construction? Second, what contractual relations should be established for conducting instrumentation programs during tunnel construction? Each session consisted of brief formal presentations and extensive panel discussions with participation from attendees. Attendees included owners, designers, contractors, and instrumentation specialists. This paper presents a consensus of views expressed during the conference.

The New Celebration Gold Mine is located 32 km south of the regional mining centre of Kalgoorlie. The current mill throughput is 1.7 million tonnes per annum with a gold production of around 120,000 ounces per year. The main source of ore for the mill comes from the Hampton Boulder and Pernatty pits. Over the last two years the oxide reserves from these pits have been depleted and the harder primary sulphide ores are now being processed. This change has led to a decrease in cyanide extractable gold.

1. Introduction In Sayreville, New Jersey, the Middlesex County Utilities Authority put the construction of a 1041 m long sewer outlet to tender in June 1989. It had an internal diameter of 3,36 m and was part of a sewage treatment works project for county Middlesex. The contract was awarded to the Lodigiani Company, USA, who employed Hochtief Incorporated as subcontractor to drive the sewer outfall. 2. Accurate estimation of resources is one of the major challenges in mineral project evaluation. Contemporary mineral resource estimation practice calls for contribution from several disciplines and execution of several interdependent tasks. 3D estimation domain modelling is obviously one of the most essential components of such a substantial process which forms the basis of this research. The study constitutes a comparative analysis of four major domain modelling techniques; (i) explicit modelling, (ii) implicit modelling, (iii) indicator kriging, and (iv) conditional simulation. It involves comparison of outcomes for alternative scenarios to assess the implications of the modelling decision on resource estimates of a polymetallic massive sulfide deposit located in western Turkey. Thus, identical grade estimation method and parameters are considered to identify the discrepancies arising only from the choice of the domain modelling approach and underlying assumptions. Economic implications are demonstrated in the form of range of outcomes for the extends of the ultimate pit, ore tonnages (min:37.0 Mt, max: 46.7Mt), waste tonnages (min:201.2 Mt, max: 251.2 Mt), stripping ratios (min:5.18, max: 5.71), and total pit values (min: $1.05B, max: $1.45B). Examination of solid models as well as cross-sections revealed that major discrepancies are observed beyond outlying drillholes. Therefore, it has been proposed that assumptions regarding extrapolation distance is the main source of mentioned dissimilarities. Key words: Domain modelling, explicit modelling, implicit modelling, indicator kriging, conditional simulation INTRODUCTION Resource estimation is apparently a challenging process calling for extensive expertise and input from several sources, each of which introducing its related uncertainties. In the last decades, substantial role of quantitative analysis of several forms of risk and uncertainty in evaluating projects’ upside potential and downside risks has been realized. Studies indicated that mining companies have been severely impacted because of not meeting project expectations. As noted by Vallee (2000) “… in the first year of operation after start-up, 60% of mines surveyed had an average rate of production less than 70% of designed capacity”. Several other studies on mining projects also revealed that uncertainties related with the resource model are one of the major contributors of mentioned shortfalls. In this perspective, quantification of uncertainties associated with each component of estimation process is critical. 3D estimation domain models capturing major mineralization controls are the fundamental components of contemporary mineral resource estimation. Domain models are key guiding tools for estimation and are products of a complex process involving many unknowns and assumptions. There exists a number of 3D modelling alternatives which are distinct with respect to complexity, time and effort involved. Acknowledging potential influences on downstream mining practices and relavent economic implications, risks and uncertainties associated with 3D domain modelling are critical yet poorly studied aspects.

Natural stones are extensively used for construction purposes since the dawn of human civilization, due to their unique aesthetical and technical characteristics. Their production and consumption has been continuously increasing over the past twenty years worldwide at an annual rate of 8.8%. European countries lead the race of per capita consumption, with Switzerland being in the first place with a consumption of 144.7 m2 per hundred inhabitants followed by Greece, Spain, Portugal, Belgium and Italy. On the other hand, during the period 2001-2002 the generated stone wastes were 110 million tones according to EU data, from which only about 5 million tones were recycled or re-used mainly in the construction industry. These stone wastes the non-natural wastes such as oils or chemicals coming from the equipment and machinery employed for stone extraction and processing, are disposed in the environment, posing serious environmental threat. To achieve sustainable development of the stone sector appropriate methods that will prevent or reduce waste generation and disposal have to be identified and applied. In this work an extensive study of the stone waste management techniques applied in Europe is carried out, in order to identify the Best Available Techniques (BAT) that can be used according to the type of generated wastes and the waste management hierarchy: Waste minimisation, Re-use, Recycling and Disposal. The identification of BAT was performed based on 14 Sustainable Development Indicators (SDI), which were grouped into three categories: environmental, economic and social. The developed final list of BAT includes waste minimisation techniques, eco-management schemes, in-situ treatment and appropriate storage and selection.

Under a Cooperative Agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) and the Mining Industry of the Future Program, CQ Inc. is demonstrating the GranuFlow™ process for improving the recovery of fine-sized coal in commercial coal preparation facilities. The State of Pennsylvania’s Energy Harvest Grant Program is also providing funding for this project. The GranuFlow technology involves the addition of an asphalt emulsion to a slurry of fine-sized coal (<100 mesh or 0.15 mm, typically froth flotation concentrate) before mechanical dewatering in screen-bowl centrifuges. The emulsion selectively agglomerates the carbon-rich particles, resulting in increased particle size and improved recovery of the coal fines during the dewatering process. This paper summarizes the test conditions and current results for both bench-scale investigations and full-scale commercial plant demonstrations.

Heat and humidity buildup withn refuge alternatives (RAs) may expose occupants to physiological hazards such as heat stress. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations require RAs in underground coal mines to provide a lifesustaining environment for miners trapped underground when escape is impossible. RAs are required to sustain life for 96 h while maintaining an apparent temperature (AT) below 95 °F (35 °C). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) tested a 10-person tent-type RA, a 23-person tent-type RA, and a 6-person metal-type RA in its underground coal mine facilities to investigate the thermal environment over a 96-h period. The test results showed that mine air and mine strata temperatures surrounding an RA occupied by simulated miners (SMs) increased over the 96-h test period. The test results suggest that RA manufacturers should consider this increase in temperatures when calculating and evaluating RA components during surface and laboratory tests. The findings can equip stakeholders with additional considerations for calculating the interior heat and humidity temperature profiles for occupied RAs not tested in situ.

It was anticipated that settlement would occur when tunnels were excavated in weak organic soils with high groundwater levels in downtown Milwaukee. Because of the potential for damage to adjacent buildings, an approach was devised during the design to address this issue. In order to do so effectively, estimates of settlement trough geometry were made; buildings identified which were potentially at risk; the means of settlement measurement designed; and threshold limits of settlement and courses of action specified. Bid items were provided for underpinning the critical structures. The approach addresses the design issues and delineates the sharing of risk between the owner and contractor. The predicted and actual performance experienced are also discussed.

"Climax Molybdenum Company’s Henderson Mine, owned by Freeport McMoRan Inc., is a panel caving molybdenum mine located 69 km west of Denver, Colorado. The mine utilizes long interconnected ore passes as part of the ore flow system. Knowing the approximate level of ore in these ore passes is beneficial for preventing increased dust concentrations in various production areas, as well as scheduling truck loading operations. Level monitoring has been achieved by using a strain gauge placed on the steel structure of the truck chute, an amplifier and a Programmable Logic Controller. This paper explains the concepts and limitations associated with using strain gauges for ore pass monitoring as well as applying proactive dust prevention and level monitoring interfaces. INTRODUCTION The Henderson Mine, located 69 km west of Denver, Colorado, is an underground molybdenum mine which uses a panel caving process to produce 18,000 tonnes per day currently. This process involves dumping ore down a series of interconnected ore passes leading to truck chutes. Trucks use these chutes to load ore and deliver this ore to an underground crusher. If ore is pulled below the lowest intercept of these ore passes, a ventilation pressure imbalance occurs which generates a large amount of dust on the levels where ore is being loaded into the tops of the ore pass. When a dust event occurs, work must be stopped until the dust settles. Once the dust settles the ore passes must be filled significantly before trucks can start pulling from the corresponding chute. This downtime and unplanned work due to dust can be avoided if the approximate ore pass levels are known. Strain gauges have been installed and tested on a truck chute at the Henderson Mine and the results of these tests have led to a series of concepts in using strain gauges to monitor ore pass levels. This paper explores these concepts and corresponding limitations and explains how the application of ore pass monitoring can be achieved with the use of strain gauges. Ore Pass and Ventilation Pressure Imbalance Overview At the Henderson Mine, there are typically two or four ore passes in different drifts that combine into one bin to create an ore pass complex as shown in Figure 1. When the level of ore is at or below the 7210 intercept (I82W), four drifts have a ventilation connection to each other and the 7655 exhaust level. A “piston effect” is created each time a bucket of muck is dumped down the ore pass. Figure 2 illustrates this phenomenon: as the loader in 621 dumps a bucket down the ore pass, the muck pushes the air in the ore pass down the 82A leg and back up the 82B leg which generates a large amount of dust. The bin regulators on 7655 cannot be opened enough to allow for this surge of air to be relieved onto the exhaust level and the dust ends up exhausting into the 625 and 627 drifts."

The Eufaula bauxite-kaolin district in southeastern Alabama is an important source of raw material for the refractory industries in the United States. At the present time, five companies are mining and processing bauxite and kaolin from this district and a sixth company is holding substantial reserves. Mining operations are expanding, but finding new ore reserves is a major problem. The Geological Survey of Alabama sponsored geologic research in the Eufaula district to: 1) investigate the utilization of sandy kaolinS and other clays associated with bauxite-kaolin deposits; 2) find limits of the bauxite district, looking for possible extensions; and 3) study the geology of the district, looking for patterns or trends that may aid in finding new ore reserves. This work was done with the full cooperation of mining companies operating in the district and property owners. Research was aided by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama. The investigation included detailed geologic mapping of mines, drilling in selected areas, and making mineral analyses of bauxite and clays. The mapping was performed primarily by pace and compass because of the complexity of the deposits studied, but aerial photographs were used to a limited extent. Drilling included both auger and core drilling. The auger drilling was limited to 100 feet, but core holes were drilled as deep as 200 feet. The term &apos;bauxite,&apos; as used here, indicates a mixture of minerals containing more than 50 percent gibbsite. Bauxitic clay is a mixture of gibbsite and kaolinite that contains more kaolinite than gibbsite. The term "kaolin" indicates a clay composed of predominantly kaolinite. Other clays in the Eufaula district are composed of kaolinite, illite, quartz, mica, and goethite or hematite.

Attapulgite and sepiolite are the clay minerals used to thicken ionically contaminated watzrs in the preparation of drilling fluids. They are nonsweliing clays that can be dispersed and reflocculated by mechanical means to increase the viscosity of fresh water and salt and gypsum contaminated waters. Those gelled in fresh water do not become excessively thick when contaminated with high salt concentrations or polyvalent cations encountered during drilling. Gels formed exhibit thixotropy and yield pseudoplastic rheological behavior due to the particle interactions and mechanical interferences of the flocculated gel structure.

A typical case study of a coal washery of capacity 500 t/h raw coal input has been presented and discussed with particular reference to the techno-economics for flotation column vis-a-vis the conventional flotation cells, keeping parameters like input capacity and product ash same. The results presented indicate that substitution of flotation cells by columns in a coal washery results in advantages of increased fine coal recovery, better quality of concentrates, lower capital and production costs etc.,. The effect of increasing the specific capacity of the column by design modifications on the cost benefit is also analysed.

Equations are derived to allow for different mean velocities of axial flow for different sizes of particles in fully mixed ball mills. The equations are modified to allow for the exit classification that occurs in grate-discharge autogenous and semiautogenous tumbling mills. An approximate treatment is given that applies for other forms of residence time distribution, provided that the mill contents are close to fully mixed.

The Code for Environmental Management of Marine Mining (the Code) was adopted in 2001 by the International Marine Minerals Society (IMMS) following extensive and wide-ranging consultation, and updated in 2002. The Code provides a framework and benchmarks for development and implementation of an environmental program for a marine exploration or extraction site by marine mining companies, and for stakeholders in governments, NGOs and communities in evaluating actual and proposed applications of environmental programs at marine mining sites. The Code provides for its review by IMMS after five years, with a focus toward possible modifications based on experience with its implementation and in light of developments in the field of marine mining and associated environmental practices, in consultation with the marine mining industry and with other stakeholders at marine mining operations. As the review of the Code is now due, to begin the process, this paper will present an analysis of the Code and initial suggestions for its modification. Extensive soil conditioning was required to allow Earth Pressure Balance(EPB) tunneling on the South Bay Ocean Outfall tunnel project in San Diego, California, near the Mexican border. This tunnel extends 19,000 feet out under the Pacific Ocean and was mined through soil formations including silts, sands, gravels, cobbles, and boulders. EPB pressures ranged from 3.0 to 7.0 bar, with the maximum pressures required when mining through the highly permeable granular formations.
