In spite of the large annual expenditures and the vast field of activity covered, it cannot be said that many new grinding machines have actually come to light and modified the existing market for more than half a century. Manufacturers have mainly made advances in increasing machine sizes, efficiency and reliability, and in machine automation. The relatively recent emergence of roller presses is the only exception to this homogenisation of machine ranges. The development of roller presses in pregrinding has shown the advantages of compression grinding over the ball mill from the power consumption point of view. But classical roller presses still have maintenance problems due to the high grinding pressure. The FCB Research Centre has carried out much work in this field and in particular has studied the advantages of this process in pregrinding and integral grinding. These researches lead to the development of two new compression grinding machines. The first one, HOROMILL®, presented for the first time on the 8th European symposium on comminution at Stockholm, finds its application in the field of fine to very fine grinding in dry process. The second one, RHODAX®, presented at INTERMAT in Paris, covers the field of secondary and tertiary crushing and the first stage of grinding for most of the minerals in dry or wet process. Its high reduction factor permits to do with only one machine the work realised today with two or three crushing/milling stages. These two complementary machines offer a wide range of combination summarised on [Figure 1].

Introduction A major uncertainty in assessing the potential for heap-and dump-leach projects is how to determine the extraction-rate curve for the recovery of the mineral values from coarse ore. Such material could either be run-of-mine (ROM) or primary crushed ore. The problem with field testing coarse ore, especially for new projects, is the large scale and extended leach times needed to accurately determine the final extraction-rate curve. At least 5 x 103 to 5 x 104 t of representative ROM ore are typically required for a copper test heap, and much more is often used. Kennecott, for example, recently constructed a 0.9 Mt (1 million st) ROM test heap at the Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah. In such coarse ore operations, the ultimate level of extraction will require a leach cycle that can extend from several months to a few years. Quite often, project development schedules do not provide the luxury of mining such large quantities of material or running such long tests. Instead, test data are usually limited to results from column leach studies on relatively fine ore, often with a top size that does not exceed 25 mm. Maximum leach times are also short, typically less than a year before an initial decision is needed on project viability. Proposed method One approach to estimating the recovery from a coarse ore leach is to assume that the leach solution will have some ultimate penetration distance into the rock. Then, the final level of mineral extraction in this "leached rim" will equal the ultimate level of extraction identified in various testing programs. Obviously, if the radius of a given rock fragment is less than the penetration distance, that fragment will be fully leached at the end of the operation. With larger rock sizes, the percent recovery will fall off as the size increases and the fraction of unpenetrated rock mass increases. Such an approach sounds simple but is likely to be complex when applied to a real project. For example, the penetration distance will be a function of both the rock characteristics and the effective length of the leach cycle. The important rock characteristics include rock porosity, the degree of internal fracturing and the mode of mineral occurrence. With regard to the latter, penetration is likely to be greater if the leachable mineralization occurs on fracture surfaces or in veinlets, as opposed to fine grains uniformly disseminated throughout the rock mass. An estimate of penetration distance may be derived from column or heap tests by noting the depth of solution penetration into the larger rock fragments after three, six and 12 months of leaching. While the penetration rate is ore specific, something on the order of 10 to 20 mm/y may be appropriate for competent, primary copper (chalcopyrite) ore. For gold in tight quartz, the rate may be about the same. Copper oxide ores and gold that is hosted in a more porous rock matrix are likely to have penetration rates that are at least two to three times higher, and an even higher rate should be appropriate for uranium hosted in sandstone. As noted above, the length of the effective leach cycle is likely to be measured in years. On this basis, the ultimate penetration distance (dp) would vary from less than 50 to several 100 mm when a particular ore is leached to exhaustion. Several sets of mathematical manipulations are necessary to convert a rock size distribution and corresponding value of dp into an estimated extraction-rate curve. The first step is to break the ROM size distribution down into intervals and then calculate the radius for the mean rock size in each interval. This is shown in Table 1 for rock sizes up to 1.75 m (about 6 ft) in diameter. The next step is to calculate the volume of unleached core and the fraction of rock that is leached. This is done for the following three values of dp: 25, 100 and 250 mm. Results are shown in Table 2. The third step is to select the ultimate level of recovery that will be achieved in the fraction of material that is effectively leached, i.e., the outer zone that is penetrated by the leach solution. M.S. Azun The article unfortunately has some serious flaws negating the usefulness of the paper. The authors claim that kriging (linear kriging) is superior to other methods such as polygon. This is not the case. The deterministic methods (referring to polygon, ID, IDS, etc.) should not be compared with the statistical methods (linear kriging, disjunctive kriging, etc.) because they differ not only in their assumptions, but also their tools used in estimation. Thus, they give different results. By comparing the results of deterministic methods and linear kriging, the authors conclude that polygon, IDS, and linear kriging give an average thickness close to the value obtained from realizations. Besides, they argue that linear kriging gives less variance than the others (Fig. 2). The first conclusion is expected, due to the well-known central limit theorem. The second is the result of the statistical properties of different estimators. Thus, the comparison presented in the paper is rather meaningless because the authors have failed to follow basic statistical procedures. The numerical results of different approaches to an estimation problem cannot be generalized. In conclusion, the paper is not a meaningful contribution, and sadly, quite erroneous. Reply by E.Y. Baafi and Y.C. Kim The two key contentions made by M.S. Azun regarding the paper are: deterministic methods should not be compared with statistical methods and, hence, the results are erroneous; and the paper does not make a meaningful contribution. The first contention is an academic one. Most practitioners in ore reserve estimation could care less whether the tool they are using falls under a deterministic or a probabilistic method, so long as it gives the desired answers. It is probably for this reason that, whenever any new tool such as linear kriging is introduced to practioners in the mining industry, they would like to see a comparison test performed between the existing and the more familiar tools with a new and "strange" tool. Only when a new tool passes such a test, the generally conservative mining community would begin to utilize the new tool to its advantage. The second contention, is a subjective one. The final judgment should be left up to the readers within the mining community. If kriging is accepted more among practitioners, partly due to the paper, then the paper makes a practical contribution to the state-of-the art in ore reserve estimation. Finally, M.S. Azun entirely missed two main points in the paper. The first is that any comparative study of kriging vs. Polygonal or IDS should be performed for local estimation and not for global estimation. In the past, kriging was frequently compared with other existing tools in its performance on global estimation. Such results were nearly identical due to the central limit theorem effect, which further prevented the acceptance of kriging by practitioners. The second point is that a single case study using an existing property, as it was frequently performed in the past, is not sufficient because results depend not only on the tool itself, but also on the nature of the mineralization.

INTRODUCTION This presentation will address changing trade patterns in lead and zinc from the mid 1980's to the early 1990's. Lead and zinc deposits are developed where they are found in many parts of the world. As many are not in major consuming areas, there is significant international trade in both lead and zinc concentrates and in refined metal. Forecasts of mine production have been analyzed, primary and secondary refining capacity and future consumption levels have been estimated, to arrive at the changes in trade patterns expected during the next half decade. This paper will first address concentrate and metal trade patterns for lead, then for zinc, and finally some remarks will be made on captive mine/smelter agreements, on regional trade agreements, and on barriers to trade. I would like to note that. there is only a small international trade in semi-fabricated products such as zinc die-cast alloy, zinc oxide, lead oxide or rolled lead and zinc. Most of the world's zinc and lead trade is in concentrates or refined metal. LEAD TRADE PATTERNS Lead Concentrates Six countries are exporters of lead concentrates. Three countries are in the Americas - Canada, Mexico and Peru, with two in Africa - Morocco and South Africa (including Namibia), and Australia. Due to the limited growth in lead consumption and consequent minimum investment in new production facilities expected, mine and metal production levels and future consumption levels are not forecast to change much between now and 1990. Accordingly, the tonnage of lead concentrates exported will remain essentially unchanged from these six countries. In total they have exports of 480,000 metric tonnes (metal content)* and by 1990 this figure is forecast to rise only slightly with the only increase taking place in Mexico. The concentrates are exported mainly to Western Europe & Japan. Apart from these six main lead concentrate exporting nations, a significant change is expected in the United States. A 1.89 km-long, 4.5 m-I.D. tunnel was successfully constructed through saturated hard clay, and highly abrasive dense sand and gravel, with groundwater heads ranging from 10 to 20 m. In order to address these conditions, a Lovat earth pressure balance TBM was used, with soil conditioning by foam, water and various polymers. Support was provided by a single-pass segmented concrete lining. Groundwater inflows of 400to 1,600 lpm at times created challenges for changing cutting tools. Surface settlements were generally less than measurement thresholds, except under very low cover at startup. This project provides a pivotal case study of the successful application of EPBM technology in saturated, abrasive glacial soils and the successful application of soil conditioners.

INTRODUCTION Hydraulic fracturing was applied in horizontal drill- holes in the Salado salt formation near Carlsbad, New Mexico. Tests were performed approximately 650 m be- low surface to validate the design of a Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) for the disposal of radioactive waste from defense activities of the United States. Hydraulic fracturing was performed primarily to determine whether the virgin in situ stress state at the WIPP site is isotropic and whether the magnitude of the virgin in situ stresses corresponds to the weight of the overburden. Beyond these limited objectives, however, measurements are now being reviewed to evaluate the usefulness of hydraulic fracturing in salt formations in general. Such measurements are desirable to determine stresses induced by mining and to monitor time-dependent stress changes around underground excavations in salt masses. Hydraulic fracturing was chosen because it is the only technique that can be readily applied in virgin ground far from existing mine openings. The method also appeared to yield directly the magnitude of the least compressive principal stress, regardless of the mechanical properties of the rock mass. A knowledge of the least principal compression was deemed sufficient to establish the isotropic character of the virgin in situ stress field under two conditions: (1) the Salado formation was mechanically isotropic, i.e., the fracture toughness did not vary normal and parallel to bedding so as to permit preferred fracture paths, and (2) pressure measurements were combined with determinations of the orientations of hydraulic fractures and, more generally, with observations of the characteristic hydraulic fracture patterns. The latter was possible by locating the drillholes for hydraulic fracturing along the axes of drifts that were mined several months later. The success of general stress measurements by hy- draulic fracturing of salt subjected to anisotropic stress conditions was and remains less certain. While the smallest in situ compressive stresses should still be equal to instantaneous shut-in pressures, there may not exist any unique relationships between the greatest and intermediate in situ principal stresses on one hand and the primary breakdown and fracture reopening pressures on the other. This problem would be a consequence of stress relaxation due to salt creep around any drillhole in which hydraulic fracturing tests are conducted. Moreover, lab- oratory measurements suggest that creep and stress relaxation could be so rapid that it might not be possible to interpret the measurements for anisotropic stress conditions even if hydraulic fracturing were performed as soon after drilling as possible. The primary objectives of the stress measurements in the WIPP were met by combining hydraulic fracturing tests with finite element analyses of the effects of salt creep, observations of hydraulically induced fracture pat- terns, and laboratory hydraulic fracturing tests on oriented core. In situ hydraulic fracturing tests in long drillholes were preceded by several trial tests to establish the best test methods and to demonstrate that salt could be fractured. The resolution of anisotropic stresses and special problems, e.g., in the identification of instantaneous shut-in pressures, are currently being addressed in hydraulic fracturing tests in a mine pillar, in tests following different delays between drilling and fracturing, and in tests with different frac fluids. This paper will review the main results of the analyses above and of one group of hydraulic fracturing tests at different distances from existing excavations. The paper will conclude with a brief description of the geometry of the hydraulically induced fracture patterns. Because of space limitations, it will be assumed that the reader is familiar with hydraulic fracturing or will first consult other sources (e.g., Cleary, 1980; Gronseth and Detournay, 1979; Zoback and Haimson, 1983; Nemat-Nasser et al., 1983; Kim et al., 1984)

Air-fall tuffs have been altered to zeolite via reaction of volcanic glass with local pore solutions at the six localities discussed in this paper. These are in the southern Basin and Range Province of Arizona and New Mexico, and in the Trans-Pecos and Coastal Plain regions of Texas. Zeolitization occurred in either closed- hydrologic, open-hydrologic, or hydrothermal groundwater systems. The tripping Spring Valley (DSV) chabazite in Arizona and the Buckhorn clinoptilolite in New Mexico originated in a late Cenozoic network of closed-hydrologic, lacustrine basins extending from southeast Arizona into southwest New Mexico. At DSV, two potentially commercial chabazite-rich tuffs are interbedded with lacustine mudstone. The main zeolite tuft contains up to 90 percent chabazite. The upper zeolite tuff averages approximately 67 precent chabazite. At the Buckhorn deposit, two clinoptilolite-rich tuffs are interbedded with lacustrine m udstone in the upper part of the Gila Conglomerate. The lower zeolite tuff contains up to 90 percent clinoptilolite. The upper zeolite tuff contains over 60 percent clinoptilolite. The Casa Piedra clinoptilolite is in the Trans-Pecos region of Texas. It formed during the Tertiary in a closed basin containing a playa lake. The Casa Piedra tuff averages about 60 percent clinoptilolite. Air-fall tuffs of the Cuchillo Negro, New Mexico and Tilden, Texas clinoptilolite deposits were zeolitically altered by either percolating ground waters in open-hydrologic systems or locally by ponded, saline, alkaline solutions. Cuchillo Negro tuffs are Tertiary and average approximately 50 percent clinoptilolite. Clinoptilolite-rich tuffs of Ebcene age have been mined from four quarries at the Tilden deposits. Tufts from the Kuykendall and Buck Martin quarries contain approximately 50 to 60 percent clinoptilolite. Low temperature, SiO2 - rich, hydrothermal solutions altered air-fall tuff to clinoptilolite and chabazite in the Foster Canyon area of the Tertiary Cedar Hills and Seldon Hills volcanic-vent zone in southcentral New Mexico. Poster Canyon tuffs contain up to 60 percent zeolite and average 40 to 50 percent clinoptilolite. The dominant mineral in the zeolite tufts at the six deposits studied is generally microcrystalline and either chabazite or clinoptilolite. Lithic fragments, unaltered volcanic glass, other zeolites, quartz, calcite, opal-CT, cristobalite, feldspar, evaporites, clays, and mafic minerals are also constituents of the tufts.

INTRODUCTION The placement of concrete by means of pumping is one of the fastest growing practices in the construction industry and is widely used in mining applications. In¬troduced in the United States in 1933, this method has been adapted to many aspects of the industry, especially where space for equipment is either limited or inaccessi¬ble. Concrete pumping offers many advantages over other methods of placement. Using pumping equipment, the concrete mixture can be transported in a single operation from a central mixing site to numerous forms in many remote locations, eliminating the need for rehandling the mixture and reducing the labor costs to a minimum. Pressurized pumping provides an extra mix¬ing and blending step, resulting in concrete of improved uniformity and greater density. In turn, this produces high compressive strength and increased durability. Various placement defects can be reduced or pre¬vented by pumping. The steady and even flow of the concrete minimizes the form distortion and delays caused by vibration problems that are common to fast dumping of the concrete mixes. Segregation, planes of weakness, bleeding, and surface faults are diminished considerably. Perhaps the greatest advantages of concrete pump¬ing are the distances and volumes that can be handled. Depending upon the equipment used, pumping rates of from 8 to 115 m'j/h (10 to 150 cu yd per hr) can be achieved, with a horizontal range of up to 460 m (1500 ft) and a vertical range of up to 140 m (450 ft). Theoretically, almost any concrete mixture could be pumped. However, consistency is an important consid¬eration for efficient operation. Mixes that are too wet, too dry, too hard, or poorly graded can cause difficulties that increase the costs. Similarly, mixes containing aggregate material that is over the maximum size or that is porous and highly absorptive can also result in diffi¬culties and increased costs. For the best efficiency, the mix formulation must have a well-graded sand and aggregate combination, with enough fines to provide flowability. If additional water is required for pumping, additional cement must be used to meet the design criteria of the structure. Each pump manufacturer can provide recommended mix formulations for the specific equipment furnished. Since the 1950s, many improvements have been made in pumping technology. Originally, only rigid steel pipe of 168 to 245 mm (6.625 to 9.625 in.) diam was used; today, both rigid steel pipe and flexible conduit are available in diameters of from 76 to 203 mm (3.0 to 8.0 in.). Improved pumps have been developed, and the introduction of power-coordinated booms has in¬creased the versatility of concrete pumping. The older and more conventional placement methods can no longer compete with the flexibility, efficiency, and econ¬omy of the pumping method, and continued research and development can only improve the system and expand its use throughout the mining industry. PUMPING EQUIPMENT The three major types of concrete pumping units currently available are the piston pumps, the pneumatic pumps, and the squeeze-type pumps. Table I provides a comparison of capacities, horizontal ranges, and vertical ranges for pumps of all three types. INTRODUCTION Main mine fan installations at underground coal mines must be designed to comply with the requirements outlined in 30 CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) Part 75. However, very little emphasis is typically placed on the aerodynamic optimization of shaft collar designs, ductwork configurations, and the selection of a fan isolation, or "closing door," system. Field testing has shown that poorly designed systems may produce large pressure losses between the shaft and fan inlet, as well as air turbulence problems which adversely impact fan efficiency and sometimes fan structural integrity. This paper analyzes each component of a surface exhaust fan system for an underground coal mine: • The shaft collar arrangement, • The 45 or 90-degree turning duct that isolates the fan motor from the return airstream, • Alternative ductwork arrangements for parallel fan installations, • The self-closing doors or dampers that are required for multiple fans, and • Horizontal and vertical evas6 arrangements on the discharge side of the fan. While discussion is limited to axial fan installations at shaft mines, most of the recommendations would also apply to centrifugal fan installations and to main mine fans for drift mines. FEDERAL REGULATIONS The mandatory safety standards for underground coal mines that apply to the installation of main mine fans are listed in 30 CFR Part 75.310. Stipulations which impact the design of the fan sys- tem arrangement are contained in paragraphs (a)(l), (a)(5), (a)(6),(d), and (1) of 75.31 0: • Each main mine fan shall be installed on the surface in an incombustible housing; • Each main mine fan shall be protected by weak walls or explosion doors in direct line with possible explosive forces; • Explosion doors or weak walls shall have a cross-sectional area at least equal to the area of the return air shaft or drift opening through which the pressure from an underground explosion would be relieved; • Each main mine fan shall be offset by at least 4.57 m (15 feet) from the nearest side of the mine or shaft opening; • Automatic closing doors shall be provided to prevent possible air reversals through the fans in mines ventilated by multiple main mine fans. The installation of main mine fans underground is prohibited by 30 CFR Part 75.310, (a)(l). Providing explosion doors or weak walls in line with a possible underground explosion and offsetting the fan 4.57 m (1 5 feet) from the edge of the shaft preclude the installation of the fan directly over the shaft. In addition, 30 CFR Part 75.507-1 specifies that all electrical equipment used in return air courses be permissible, which requires locating the fan motor outside of the airstream exhausted through the fan. To comply with the Part 75.310 regulations, explosion doors are typically located directly over the shaft as part of the shaft cover or 'bonnet." A sufficiently long section of ductwork placed between the shaft enclosure and fan, equipped with a 45 or 90- degree turn, enables the fan to be offset at least 4.57 m (1 5 feet) from the shaft and the motor to be isolated from the airstream. The need for the turn in the ductwork can be eliminated by driving the fan from the discharge side, instead of from the inlet side, and providing for a 90-degree bend in the evas6. For multiple main mine fan systems, self-closing doors can be located on the inlet or discharge side of the fan. FAN SYSTEM COMPONENTS A poorly designed exhaust fan arrangement will produce turbulent conditions at the fan inlet and significant pressure losses between the shaft and fan. Field tests have shown that pressure losses through inlet ductwork at some installations may constitute as much as 30 percent of the total mine head. Unfavorable flow conditions may cause a change in the operating point on the fan performance curve, resulting in reduced fan efficiency and pres- sure generation capability. In some instances, poor airflow distribution through the fan may create mechanical stresses that lead to fan blade or fan housing fatigue failures. The objective in designing an air duct arrangement for a fan system is to provide a low cost duct that will move the air from the shaft to the fan in a uniform air distribution and with minimum energy requirements. The optimum solution is a compromise between technical and economic factors. Aerodynamic design considerations for the shaft collar and cover, fan inlet ductwork for both single and parallel fans, self-closing doors, and evas6 are discussed in the sections below. Shaft Collar/Cover To prevent excessive turbulence and non-uniform air distribution through the fan, a smooth transition for the change in direction of airflow at the top of the shaft must be provided. However, the concrete lining of the shaft is abruptly terminated at the surface at many coal mine installations (see Figure I), creating a sharp 90-degree bend. A variety of approaches have been used in the recent literature for the estimation of pre-mining (or natural background) metal concentrations in areas affected by mining. The following is a list of some of these approaches: (1) historical and anecdotal data, (2) remote analogues (other similarly mineralized areas), (3) proximal analogues (nearby mineralized areas), (4) sediment sampling (streambeds, lakes, estuaries, floodplain deposits, and soil profiles), (5) stable isotopes (hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur, and carbon), (6) geochemical modeling (forward, equilibrium-based), (7) geochemical modeling (forward, kinetic- and transport-based, and inverse), (8) statistical analyses, (9) mass balance on oxygen flux, (10) mass balance with age determination of weathered material. Examples of each approach are described, and the strengths and limitations of each approach are discussed.

Mining is most vital to our civilization. The current model of extraction technologies was designed without an expiration date and therefore generates environmental effects that are severe. Mining results-effects have been traditionally accepted and promoted around the world since Agricola described mining. Mining’s extractive technology is outmoded and standardized and inflicts negative results-effects on nature. Those results are liabilities dimensioned in legacy and type of nature able to provide to the next generation. In order to design, build, and transform mining effectively we must ask: What is the vision of mining? Mining has exhausted its antiquated mindset of over 200 years. Now it merely pilots us into crisis. The challenge today is to resolve the socio-environmental conflicts globally with a radical transformation of the mining business at its core. This paper illustrates that old mindsets must be radically updated or the concept of mining will continue to be trapped. Changing the mindset will enable discourse toward a new destiny. These changes will change mining for the better. We are able to evolve and get different results than in the past by pursuing a new legacy to live in harmony with nature for many more years. INTRODUCTION Minerals are supported by the law of conservation of mass. They have the unique characteristics of being finite, exhaustible, unsustainable, and have an unlimited recycling. Minerals are also hard to find because we have explored and virtually exhausted the whole crust of this planet. Orebodies that used to be considered world class are almost exhausted. In the short-term, it would be almost impossible to find new world class orebodies unless they could be extracted from the ocean, the moon or other planets like Mars. Mining is designed to extract minerals for profit and to keep civilizations functioning. Subsequently, mining has a social issue that is an economic issue. Thus, mining must be seen as a real and urgent subject matter that must be protected in thought and in fact. The actual mining extractive technologies produce disequilibrium in nature that has unknowable effects in the course of time. History is filled with the negative consequences to nature due to the model of mining. The evidence of these effects from mining’s model is apparent in repetitive liabilities around the world. The effects negatively impact nature without any consideration to how these impacts will manifest themselves in the future. This model of mining is widespread and extolled in every corner of the planet because it is old and familiar and although wasteful and outdated, we do not want to expend financial resources from profit or elsewhere to explore newer ideas, methods, or technologies that would help us keep a sustainable harmony between extraction and nature. We need a new vision for mining today and to explore in what way academia can and must play a social role in the teaching of mining methods. We need to question why we continue to support the old model of mining and to ask ourselves what prevents us from updating and modernizing the method of mining to meet the current needs not just of civilization but the urgent needs to undo some of the damage to the earth. This paper hopes to develop a method to change our minds about how we conduct the business of mining in order to control the destiny of it.

Concrete pump is commonly used to transport paste and high-density backfill over relatively long horizontal distances. However, since the investment in concrete-pump and its operating cost are quite high, the application of paste backfill is limited in China. For seeking an alternative paste backfill technology, squeezed-transport technique and equipment has been developed. The new technology has been adopted at Tonglushan Copper Mine of Daye Nonferrous Metals Corp for overcoming a difficulty of long-distance transportation of high-density cemented tailings fill. It proved to be an alternative paste backfill method with simple backfill system, saving investment and low operating costs.

This work describes the effect of process parameters on the acidulation of Moroccan phosphate rock using nitric acid, i.e., the nitro-phosphate process. A series of bench scale experiments were conducted, using a stirred tank reactor (STR) system, to investigate the chemical reactions involved and optimum conditions for the formation of nitro-phosphate fertilizer. The effect of reaction time, temperature, mixing speed, acidulation ratio, and acid concentration were investigated, and were found to have an effect on the dissolution of P2O5 from the phosphate rock, using nitric acid. An increase in nitric acid concentration resulted in an increase in P2O5 dissolution, however, the dissolution was also found to be a function of acidulation ratio. A nitric acid phosphate rock ratio of 4:l ensured 90% dissolution for nitric acid concentration > 30%.

Geoenvironmental models are compilations of geologic, geochemical, and hydrologic information that describe both the pre- and post-mining environmental signatures of mineral deposits. The environmental behavior of seafloor massive sulfide deposits varies according to deposit type. This study has divided massive sulfide deposits into six categories: (1) Noranda-type, (2) Kuroko-type, (3) Cyprus- type, (4) Bathurst-type, (5) Besshi-type, and (6) sedimentary-exhalative deposits. In addition to Fe and Al, the heavy metals most commonly associated with drainage from these deposits are Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, and As. Metal ratios of mine drainage and natural background waters tend to reflect the primary character of the ores. Variations in pyrite and pyrrhotite contents are reflected in lower pH values associated with pyrite-rich deposit types.

Experiments conducted with a 75-mm-diem hydroryclone have shown it is possible to obtain an iron ore concentrate containing 60% Fe. 2.65% SiO2, and 4.0% Al2O3 from Barsua iron-ore washing-plant slimes. About 60% of the iron values are recovered from slimes containing approximately 49% Fe, 8.9% A1203 and 11% SiO2. The obtained products can be used in the sinter feed for iron and steel making. The key to achieving process success lies in establishing the correct cut point (d50) of the hydrocyclone through the manipulation of operating and design variables, such as spigot and vortex finder diameter, solids concentration and operating pressure. The cyclone efficiency is represented by the partition curve. The cyclone performance, evaluated mathematically from the reduced efficiency curve, is represented by the equation Y = 100[1 -exp(-axb)], where: •X = did 50, •Y = corrected of efficiency (%) and •a and b are constants.

Magnetic fluids are commonly composed of ultrafine submicron particles of magnetite (Fe3O4) dispersed in either a kerosene or a water carrier medium with oleic acid as a protective colloid. The unique property of these fluids is that when the magnetic particles are attracted to a magnet the carrier medium moves along with the particles so that the liquid also appears magnetic. The availability of a fluid whose gross behavior changes sharply in a magnetic field without affecting its rheologic characteristics is becoming critical for many technologic applications. About two gener¬ations ago suspensions of relatively large, micron-sized ferromagnetic particles in oil proved useful in clutches, brakes, and dashpots. These were called magnetic clutch materials, and their viscosities were highly dependent upon the applied magnetic field, in contrast to true mag¬netic fluids which retain their fluidic characteristics under all applied fields and field gradients. While the term "ferrofluid" was used by Rosensweig and Kaiser&apos; to designate a magnetic colloid composed of a dispersed magnetic ferrous material, the more general term, "mag¬netic fluid," is preferred. This is because these fluids may contain ferro- or ferrimagnetic substances, such as cobalt, nickel, gadolinium, dysprosium, or magnetic ferrites in carrier liquids, such as hydrocar¬bons (kerosene), silicones, water, fluorocarbons, etc. Preparation of Magnetic Fluids Magnetic fluids were first prepared by Papell and Faber, at the NASA Lewis Research Center, Cleveland, Ohio, by tumbling ferrite materials for several weeks in a carrier medium (such as kerosene) and a dispersing agent (such as oleic acid) with steel balls. Rosensweig et al.1 compared the stability of their ferrofluids obtained from both metallic iron and the magnetic oxides of iron, Fe3O4 and yFe2O3. They found that, although the saturation magnetization of iron is 3.5 times greater than that of magnetite, its colloidal solutions deterio¬rated much more rapidly. The iron particles were undoubtedly rapidly oxidized to a nonmagnetic state due to the enormous surface area of these colloidal particles. Because the properties of these fluids are highly dependent on particle size and may acquire opposite characteristics by small incre¬ments in that size, more controllable methods of preparation have been developed recently by Khalafalla and Reimers.6 In one method metastabilized pyrophoric wiistite is ground to colloidal size in a kerosene oleic acid mixture, and then it is disproportionated to colloi¬dal magnetite and iron at temperatures just below the eutectoidal temperature of wüstite stability (570°C); thus, t < 570°C 4 FeO t > 570°C Fe + Fe30, (1) Because of its antiferromagnetic characteristics, the precursor wüstite is much easier to grind than magnetite. Another method3 avoids grinding entirely and utilizes a peptiza¬tion technique from ferrous materials in the molecular state of aggrega¬tion. This latter procedure has resulted in preparation of strong fluids at considerable savings in cost.

The construction of a large span, high-walled underground opening in a low strength shale rock is unprecedented. The feasibility of constructing a pumped storage project with several tunnels and a large underground powerhouse in low strength shale rested largely on the feasibility of building stable openings large enough to accommodate the required equipment. Because of the lack of experience with large openings in shale, the decision was made to excavate a test adit and test chamber and conduct a multi-faceted geotechnical evaluation program designed to yield pertinent in-situ data on the ability of the shale to accommodate a large underground opening. Factors considered in the shape, size, orientation, and location of the test chamber were: (1) similarity to the anticipated powerhouse chamber, (2) nature of the most important data to be obtained, (3) feasibility of construction, and (4) economics.

Cyanidation of gold and silver ores by conventional mining and milling techniques has been practiced for over a century. During the past decade, heap leaching has emerged as a viable process for treating certain gold and silver ores. (1) The rapid development of heap leaching for gold and silver ores is largely a result of lower capital and operating costs and faster start-up time than that offered by conventional mining and milling. In general, these features make heap leaching an ideal approach for exploiting either small or large low-grade disseminated deposits of gold and silver considered to be uneconomic by conventional methods. The development of heap leaching technology has evolved from the operations initiated in the western United States. The basic components of a typical heap leaching operation are depicted in Figure 1. Run-of-mine or crushed ore (usually 1 to 5 ppm gold) is delivered to specifically prepared impervious pads. Alkaline cyanide solution is applied to the surface of the heap and allowed to percolate through the heap (typically 10-30 ft high). Pregnant leach solution which drains from the heap is collected and stored in tanks of sufficient size or in collection reservoirs. Gold and silver are recovered from the pregnant solution and the barren solution is recirculated back to the heaps after reagent make-up.
