Hindered-bed separators are often used in the minerals processing industry to classify particles according to size and density. A new technology, known as the Eriez CrossFlow, was recently developed to overcome some of the limitations associated with hydraulic separators. The innovative feature of this unit is a novel feed presentation system that improves separation efficiency and capacity. In the present work, a detailed process engineering evaluation was conducted to determine the basis for the improved performance of this unit. The evaluation included controlled separation tests using well-characterized feeds, particle and liquid tracer experiments and mathematical modeling studies. Data obtained from this work show that the new separator is capable of maintaining good separation efficiencies at higher solid feed rates than traditional designs due to improved hydrodynamics in the separation zone. This paper reviews the operating principle of the Eriez CrossFlow separator, discusses the results of the tracer experiments and modeling studies and presents test data obtained from recent laboratory and plant trials. Model-Based Expert Control systems (MBEC) are on-line supervisory dynamic optimization systems which combine the ability of a phenomenological model to generate a large amount of information about the state of the process and predict its evolution, with the flexibility of a rules-based approach to take plant constraints into account and apply a complex control strategy. For its new concentrator started in 1995 in Kiruna (Sweden), LKAB has implemented a progressive grinding flowsheet with closed-circuit autogenous grinding followed by closed-circuit pebble grinding with ore pebbles. The standard for instrumentation in this new plant is very high. The control hardware consists of a Distributed Control System (DCS) through which the operators interact with the plant, supplemented by a site-level Management Information System (MIS). A state-of-the-art MBEC system was imbedded in the MIS by the authors before plant start-up. It consists of several modeling and expertise software modules: a phenomenological process model and a Kalman filter estimate continuously the state of the process, an optimizer calculates an optimum feedrate, while rules-based modules establish production targets and key process set-points. The decision to install the MBEC system as an integral part of the new plant before start-up illustrates the current maturity of the technology, i.e., enough know-how was accumulated through former projects to design and develop the system to a large extent without accessing the plant. The feasibility and the power of dynamic optimization systems were previously demonstrated in Kiruna pre-existing concentrator by the authors. First, a MBEC system was installed on the three existing pebble mill circuits, providing both an increase in quality (stabilised size distribution) and a 10% increase in capacity. An on-line expert control system with limited modeling capabilities was also installed in the existing flotation plant, with the aim of stabilizing phosphorous content in the concentrate and optimizing collector additions. When considering alternative equipment choices in mill or process flowsheets, it is important to determine both capital and operating costs of such equipment as well as other possible savings related to downstream operations. This paper presents a few case studies and shows cursory guidelines for the selection of equipment for new installations or in the retrofitting of existing plants. Based upon recent plant experience, suggestions are given to improve the operation of clarifiers, thickeners and vacuum filters.

Restricted fields of vision are a common problem with underground mining equipment. Also, when lighting systems are provided, they may be positioned where they cause glare. This restricts the visibility around the machines even further. To help address these problems, the US Bureau of Mines has developed a PC-based software package to aid in the analysis of certain human engineering aspects of mining equipment design. The software is available for use by equipment manufacturers and mining companies for design work on new machines, as well as for evaluating proposed modifications to existing machines.

During the last few years there has been a rapid increase in the development of the community or junior college throughout the United States, Some factors behind this development include the need for more college facilities to service the growing number of high school graduates, the desire of the public to provide some post high school education at reasonable costs, and the need to provide post high school educational opportunities not now provided by most of the universities and colleges. Many of the new community colleges provide at least three educational services including local opportunity to provide the first two years of a four year college program, two year technical-vocational programs of a terminal nature, and adult educational opportunities. The community college has the advantage of not being saddled with years of academic tradition which prevent it from changing to suit the educational needs of the community It serves. The flexibility of the community college in developing new programs, particularly in the technical areas, is going to provide industry with many of the badly needed technicians it is now unable to secure.

The most important event affecting the United States coal industry in 1993 was the strike by the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA). This was a series of selective strikes, beginning with a strike against four Peabody Holding affiliates on Feb. 2, following unsuccessful contract negotiations between the UMWA and the Bituminous Coal Operators' Association (BCOA). Although that strike ended on March 3, the failure to reach a new contract agreement led to walkouts at several Midwestern mines on May 10. During the summer, the strike expanded to include mines of 13 companies in seven states including Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Virginia and West Virginia. About 17,000 miners were idled during the strike. As the prospects for a settlement diminished, the Secretary of Labor appointed a federal mediator. The mediation resulted in a five-year contract. In addition to increases in wages and pensions, it was agreed that 60% of new job openings would be filled by laid off and active UMWA miners. In return, companies won the right to establish more flexible work rules and scheduling of miners. While some health care benefits were expanded, the agreement established a new health care system that was designed to reduce costs. Preliminary Energy Information Administration (EIA) data indicate that US coal production fell by 5% in 1993, to 859 Mt (947 million st) (Table 1). The strike was one of the primary causes of the decline in production. Another significant cause was a 27% decline in coal exports. Also, a very small displacement of domestic coal production resulted from a rise in coal imports.

Coal waste materials inhibit the direct establishment of vegetation due to adverse physical and chemical properties, particularly low water retention and high potential acidity. The Moss #1 coal refuse pile is located in Dickenson County, Virginia, and was idled in the late 1980s with little topsoil resources available for final closure. The refuse was acidic (Total S = 0.38%; pH = 3.6), black in color and high (70%) in coarse fragments. The refuse also had a low water-holding capacity (4.5% in < 2.0-mm fraction). A small plot experiment was established on the refuse pile to evaluate the effects of liming rates (50% and 100% of lime requirements) and topsoil thickness (15, 30 and 60 cm) on vegetative growth and leachate quality. Liming and topsoil amendment increased the surface soil pH from <4.0 to >6.0 over a two-year period, which resulted in greater vegetative cover and biomass than the control plots. All topsoil treatments resulted in greater vegetative cover and biomass than plots treated with lime only. This was due to improved surface soil physical and chemical properties. A topsoil treatment of 60 cm gave the thickest vegetative cover and biomass yield. Such a treatment, however, would be cost-prohibitive at this location. Applica¬tion of 27Mg ha`1 of lime to the refuse surface along with 15 cm of topsoil produced acceptable two-year vegetative cover and biomass, and this appeared to be the optimal treatment for this particular situation. Both liming and topsoil had no affect on leachate pH and the electrical conductivity of leachates collected below the plots. This suggests that surface revegetation will have little effect on the quality of water draining through the pile. Therefore, long-term water-treatment requirements may not be reduced by successfully revegetating the pile surface.

The use o f cyanide to extract gold from ores is widespread. In the process of extracting gold, cyanide may form metal cyanide complexes with a variety of other metals present in the ore. This study was carried out to investigate the biodegradation of the Cu(I)-cyanide complex and tetracyanonickelate under varying pH and nutrient additions. Detailed studies using shake flask cultures and bioreactors showed that naturally occurring bacteria residing on gold-leach-pad ore uti¬lized the Cu(I)-cyanide complex (CuCN) and tetracyano-nickelate, Na2(NiCN4), as carbon and/or nitrogen sources. Ammonium-nitrogen (NH4+-N) and/or cyanate (CNO-) accumulated in solution as the metal cyanide complexes were degraded. The accumulation of cyanate as a product is a concern due to its toxicity. Degradation rates were increased if a growth substrate (peptone, 0.1%) was added to the medium or if bioreactors were primed with peptone before addition of the metal-cyanide complex. Tetracyanonickelate was degraded at pH 8 without added peptone, but it was not degraded at pH 10. The addition of peptone was required for degradation of the Cu(I)-cyanide complex at pH 8 and pH 10. At pH 8, the addition of peptone resulted in the accumulation of cyanate, whereas, at pH 10, cyanate was not detected in the cultures. Biodegradation of metal-cyanide complexes was faster (approximately 1.5 to ten times faster) in bioreactors than in shake flask cultures. The addition of peptone was not required for degradation of metal-cyanide complexes in bioreactors. However, priming the bioreaetor with peptone resulted in higher metal-cyanide degradation rates over multiple cycles.

The lawyer&apos;s role in underground construction, certainly for the past 20 years, has been principally that of the advocate in disputes resolution. Disputes in underground construction have been steadily increasing, making the lawyer a more prominent participant in the underground construction process. It is widely believed, however, that this is not a salutory state of affairs. It is our thesis that lawyers ought not be eliminated from the process, but rather that their role should be changed. They should function as prophylactics rather than as swords, i.e., they should be used to prevent or reduce disputes rather than, after the fact, to champion their clients&apos; causes. a. Mr. Rubin is a partner in the New York law firm of Postner & Rubin. He has litigated and arbitrated numerous complex construction disputes. He has also participated in efforts to improve contracting practices on committees of ASCE and the National Academy of Engineering. b. A majority of the chemical process industry uses lime in either a powder or liquid form. Engineering and maintenance personnel often face a long and potentially expensive trial-and-error period in order to find the best process equipment to handle lime. Limestone is mined from a quarry in the form of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Then, it is crushed and fed into a kiln at approximately 1,093° C (2,000° F), where the carbon dioxide is burned off (calcining) to make calcium oxide (CaO).

Although Disputes Review Boards have been used for some time, they had not received wide publicity at the time Monroe County first used one. Public owners frequently resist adopting new contracting practices. This paper discusses an owner&apos;s experience with Dispute Review Boards, from learning about them to their use on two (2) projects. The experiences of potential and actual contractor claims are compared to a claim on an earlier contract and the ensuing litigation. Suggestions for possible use for Owner-Engineer disputes and recommendations for use are provided.

More than 100,000 residents of Springfield and surrounding communities live on karst (sinkhole) terrain on the Springfield Plateau in southwestern Missouri. The city occupier much of the headwaters area of Wilson Creek basin, which is underlain by the Burlington Limestone (Mississippian), a cavernous, massively bedded formation averaging 150 feet in thickness. Sinkholes, some as deep as 75 feet, pock-mark the uplands. Stony red residual clay mantles the pinnacled limestone bedrock. Surface water lost to sinkholes and losing reaches of upstream areas resurges in springs and estevellas (reversible sinkholes) in the lower reaches of Wilson Creek. The Springfield Southwest Treatment Plant, an activated sludge process sewage treatment facility, situated about mid-basin at the confluence of Wilson Creek and a tributary, South Creek, serves the entire city. Effluent from the treatment plant together with industrial, street-wash and other waste from the-headwaters of the basin have degraded both surface and ground water quality in much of the Wilson Creek watershed. The area affected includes Wilson&apos;s Creek Battlefield National Park and recreational reaches of James River below the mouth of Wilson Creek.

A brittle solid broken by crushing or impact, results in a mass size distribution curve having a straight line segment when plotted on log-log paper. Depending on the mineral, the slope of this straight line segment ranges from a maximum of one for materials like glass and quartz to values of one half or less. Theoretical derivations of the size distribution, such as the Gaudin-Meloy model, yield a slope of one and only one. When the Gaudin-Meloy model is modified to assume that not all cracks terminate on a preexisting surface, the new model predicts that size distribution slopes, depending on the type of brittle solid, will be less than one. There is a measurable physical parameter that will predict the slope. In addition the model predicts that particles from such a size distributions will have negative corners and peaks - indentations. Moreover the model predicts that particle shape will systematically change with decreasing particle size. Finally, this new physical model of comminution may be experimentally tested.

Groundwater remediation is growing in occurrence in the western United States. Groundwater remediation programs are regulated by state water quality statutes. The remedial action plans implemented under these statutes may conflict with well-established existing rights to withdraw groundwater for beneficial use. This paper discusses how the states of Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico administer conflicts between the need to withdraw and remediate groundwater with the existing rights of others to withdraw groundwater for beneficial purposes.

The concept of microorganisms as chemical reagents (flocculants, flotation modifiers and flotation collectors) is quite new. Potential uses for microorganisms include their use in place of certain conventional flotation reagents and as flocculating agents in minerals engineering processes. In addition, in some studies micro-organisms have been used to modify mineral surfaces and, thus, the flotation or flocculation of the minerals.

Conventional underground mapping methods and diamond drilling are being applied in a study to determine the nature of the copper ore occurrences near the footwall of the Osceola lava flow top, commonly referred to as the Osceola Amygdaloid. Our work to date suggests that structures formed by relatively impermeable barriers, created by flowage and injection of still-molten lava from the interior of the flow into the solidified, brecciated crust, acted as the ore receptacles. Ascending hydrothermal fluids traveling near the footwall contact were trapped and confined in these barriers which retarded the direct upward movement of the ore fluids and caused deposition of copper. Oreshoots located near the footwall appear to have been formed spatially&apos; independently from the hanging-wall oreshoots by fluids traveling simultaneously, but along different channelways. The barrier concept as advanced by earlier writers to explain the concentration of the ore-bearing, fluids into broad shoots con¬stituting entire ore bodies is found to be equally as applicable for the localization of smaller oreshoots within the Osceola ore body.

Douglas W. Fuerstenau (DWF) grew up on a farm and in several small communities in rural South Dakota during the depression years, where he learned the value of hard work. Working hard can produce results but being clever and hardworking will give you a bright future. In his later school years, Fuerstenau’s family moved to Rapid City where his intellectual curiosity and capacity helped him graduate with a B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 1949. His technical interests led to graduate studies and completion of a master’s degree from the Montana School of Mines in 1950 and Sc.D. degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1953.

"Ten years ago," said a mining industry personnel manager, "we used to wine and dine new mining engineering graduates. Now I can pick and choose among men with 10 years of experience." Comments like that are common throughout the industry today. During the 1970s, the US and Canada did indeed suffer from a severe shortage of mining engineers, especially experienced ones. Moreover, it seemed likely this North American shortage would worsen. Increased production of minerals and coal was pushing demand for mining engineers upwards, and there appeared to be substantial new employment prospects for them in the nascent synfuels industry. The oil majors entering the mining industry were pushing for an increased professionalization of mining management, heralding a trend towards higher intensity in the use of mining engineers. In response to the shortage, mining schools expanded their programs dramatically. By 1982, American schools were churning out more than 600 new mining engineers per year, compared to barely 200 in 1970 (Table 1). The timing of the explosion in the number of mining engineers could not have been worse. The downturn in the economy and the resulting slump in the mining industry coincided almost exactly with peak output of mining engineers. The market for mining engineers shifted from shortage to surplus with startling rapidity. The new crop of engineers, no longer courted by the mining companies, struggled to find any mining jobs. At the same time, experienced mining engineers found themselves thrown into the job market, some for the first time in decades. The current oversupply of mining engineers is assumed to be a temporary phenomenon. As the economy recovers, the demand for mining engineers is expected to pick up at least enough to absorb today&apos;s surplus. Not so, according to a recent study by Fenvessy and Schwab, a general management consulting and executive recruiting firm. In 1979, Fenvessy and Schwab was commissioned by a group of major mining companies to conduct a worldwide study of supply and demand for mining engineers to the year 2000*. The study began at the height of the North American shortage. One major objective of the study was "to identify means by which business and educational institutions may cope with and alleviate a future shortage of mining engineering talent." The findings, however, ran directly counter to expectations. The current oversupply will not disappear with economic recovery, the study concluded. In fact, the US and Canada are facing a massive oversupply that will probably last until the end of the century, unless enrollments in schools are reduced. Study Method Fenvessy and Schwab&apos;s conclusions are based on supply and demand models for mining engineers that it developed in the course of the study. Specifically, predictions for the supply of mining engineers are based on a survey of the 54 mining schools that account for about 90% of the world&apos;s annual output of mining engineering graduates. This survey asked for data on historical and projected number of graduates, obstacles to further expansion, changing trends in the use of mining engineers, and graduate career patterns. Fenvessy and Schwab developed three mining engineering supply scenarios from the survey data. The high case, considered unlikely for most of the industrialized world, is based on a continuation of the 1970&apos;s soaring growth rates. The middle case was established from the mining schools&apos; own estimates of future growth in the number of graduating mining engineers. Finally, a "low growth" case for the US and Canada assumed that the number of graduating engineers will remain at current levels.
