Economic open-pit and surface mining often call for ever increasing volumes of lower grade materials. So it is important, often critical, to develop precise expense and production estimates for the large electric mining shovels now in use. An electric shovel's basic application is to "shovel up" material, starting at ground level with the dipper moving up into a working face or bank. It's impractical to dig below ground level with a shovel, except briefly or in unusual circumstances. The shovel working face is "the bank," whether the material is dug from natural bed or blasted. The shovel's digging attachment, the boom and dipper handle, is built in standard and long range configurations. A standard digging attachment is normally used for loading into haulage equipment. The long range attachment is normally used for side or hack casting to a spoil pile. It is also used fir loading into haulage equipment placed above shovel ground level, as in some coal loading applications. Shovel clipper size and hauler capacity should he matched so that a hauler can he loaded in three to four shovel work cycles. Five cycles is usually the limit of good practice. If fewer than three cycles are required, the hauler is too small. More than five cycles indicates possible excess harder waiting time for loading, or shovel waiting time for too few haulers. Full dipper loads, including the last dipper or ''pass, " are essential for economical shovel and hauler match. Consistent need for a final partly full dipper to fill the hauler shows an improper match between the two.

Planning the development of the Quartz Hill molybdenum open pit mine in Southeast Alaska required a number of special considerations. Located in mountainous glaciated terrain, about 3.8 m (150 in.) of annual precipitation (with annual snowfall over 10.2 m (400 :in.) was a primary consideration. Mine planning included muskeg and snow removal, avalanche control, clearing timber, water quality control, dust control, seismicity, mine schedule, work force and reclamation. Quartz Hill is in an environmentally sensitive area which has required extensive environmental baseline data collection, four Environmental Impact statements (EIS) and a large number of permits.

After being forgotten or ignored for nearly 100 years, the ability of bromine chemistry to extract gold from ore has been rediscovered. While bromine chemistry is similar to chlorine, there are some important differences. Bromine in its elemental form is a dense, fuming, red liquid. Elemental chlorine is a gas and requires a substantial amount of equipment to handle, store and deliver to solution. Bromine has an advantage in its ability to rapidly and completely oxidize heavy metals to water soluble halide salts. The first patent for use of bromine chemistry for gold extraction was issued in 1881 (1). By 1895, work done in Colorado concluded well roasted ores required approximately 1-1/2 lbs/ton of elemental bromine for superior extraction of metals (2)). At that time, bromine was deemed to be cost effective vs. chlorine even though it was more expensive on a pound basis than chlorine. The advent of cyanide technology virtually eliminated both chlorine and bromine from consideration for leaching of ores. Cyanide was so inexpensive that it made deposits requiring unique technologies unattractive for mining. Only since the deregulation of gold price has bromine/chlorine technology been considered for those ores not amenable to cyanide. While chlorine has found its way into the pretreatment steps, bromine is just beginning to realize its niche in the marketplace.

Chemical dewatering aids for mineral slurries generally fall into two classes: surfactants and flocculants, which can be used separately or together. Current industrial use of both types of reagents is summarized for sulfide and non-metallic minerals, as well as uranium and gold leach residues and coal refuse. Laboratory testing for reagent selection is briefly discussed along with reagent preparation. PMET is engaged in the development of reuse operations for process wastes from the natural resources industry. Most of the current remediation practices with mining wastes are concentrated on stabilization techniques. Once stabilized, valuable resources are no longer readily available for recovery and reuse. Additionally, stabilized materials, unless protected from weathering influences, pose lingering liability for the generator.

Land use and access to land are limiting factors in economic development in the Western region of Ghana. Mining uses land during operations and then rehabilitates the land as part of ongoing operations and closure. Golden Star Resources Limited (GSR) aims to contribute to the sustainability of the local economy during its operations and then post-closure. Following a series of alternative livelihood initiatives, GSR reviewed the success of these programs and decided to focus on an oil palm project that uses out-growers to reach the local economy. The project started using small holdings that were individually managed. However, the ongoing effects were limited. Following a review of the options, the Golden Star Oil Palm Project was started using land committed to the pro-gram by the Bogoso Mine. The initial program covered 275 ha with over 40,000 trees with 300 people involved in the development. The Traditional Authorities have committed additional lands to the project to a planned total area of 18,000 ha.

Introduction Many old underground mines have been developed extensively into reserves requiring large numbers of workers to maintain and rehabilitate lengthy track haulages and/or belt conveyor systems. Often, large numbers of fans are required to maintain minimal airflows in areas where poor conditions and huge leakages prevail. Problems that beset one such coal mine and projects undertaken to restore it to potential profitability are presented. Brief history The Vesta No. 5 mine was opened in 1908. Drift development began near the Monongahela River, which was the primary avenue for shipping metallurgical coal to coke ovens in Pittsburgh. Over the ensuing 75 years, the main haulage entries were developed a distance of 16.1 km (10 miles) to the present mining area. Track haulage was used to transport coal from working sections to the river loading facility. As haulage distance and areas of high water influx increased, management decided, in 1973, to construct an underground conveyor belt system. The project spanned 36 months and culminated in a system of 22 flights, ranging from 205.7 to 1767.8 m (675 to 5800 ft) long. Six intake and eight return entries were developed as the mains were advanced. These entries provided adequate ventilating capacity over the years, but as extensive gob areas progressed and roof conditions deteriorated, the entries became inaccessible and more resistant to airflow. By 1981, five fans were being used to circulate 943.9 m3/s (555.5 cfm) of air through the mine. An average of 6440 t (7100 st) were produced from 20.8 continuous miner unit shifts and 2.7 longwall unit shifts each day in 1981. The ratio of support to production personnel was 1.94. To maintain the outby 16.1 km (10 miles) of haulage, 110 personnel were used. The average cost per ton was $43.54 ($39.58 per st), resulting in excessive bottom-line losses. The mine possessed a rather promising reserve, mostly in lease, of good quality, medium-sulfur metallurgical coal, but it also had a number of formidable operating problems. Operating problems Contributing factors toward relatively low productivity and high costs were the conditions of the track haulage, conveyor, and ventilation systems. The MIT tunneling group has developed, over the past decade, a number of decision support tools for the geologist and engineer, planner and designer, owner and contractor involved in underground construction. These computer based tools can be used in the planning and exploration stage of a project, in predesign and design, in construction planning and during construction. Tasks as different as optimizing information collection during exploration and during construction, as selecting major design alternatives in predesign and modifying design during construction, as providing cost and time estimation and considering social and physical environmental constraints, can be handled. Output can be in the form desired by the user ranging from geologic profiles (cross sections) to management reports.

The Muck Valley Hydroelectric Project in Northeastern California required construction of a 3.65 meter tunnel through 6,623 meters of mixed volcanic flow deposits within a critical time frame. As Engineer and Construction Manager for the Project, Morrison-Knudsen Engineers invited bids for both Drill and Blast as well as Tunnel Boring Machine methods, selecting a contractor proposing a TBM designed and built specifically for this project which could excavate a wide variety of materials and maintain acceptable progress rates to complete the work within schedule. Tunnel lining as required included shotcrete with metal fibers and full circle concrete.

To model the zinc pressure leach, equations have been written that describe the rates of individual reactions taking place, including (a) oxygen mass transfer, (b) ferrous oxidation by dissolved oxygen, and (c) ferric reactions with ZnS and other minerals. In the continuous process, at steady-state, these take place at the same rate, and so the equations can be solved simultaneously. Model calculations using simultaneous equations are shown in graphical form to demonstrate the effect of different variables on the leach performance.

The method of conditional simulation is easily implemented on the personal computer when the LU decomposition algorithm of Davis (1987) is employed. This algorithm is fairly compact, yet can generate moderate-sized simulations in a few minutes on a 80286 or 80386-based personal computer. The application of conditional simulation presented here is to generate possible ore inventories from a limited amount of exploration sampling. The simulations can then he examined to decide if the potential inventories are sufficiently attractive to proceed with further exploration. An example showing one application of this approach is presented.

A computer performs all logic and computations customarily done by hand in preparation of engineers' estimates or contractors' bids on tunnel-shaft systems. The program described is based on construction methods, work forces and equipment selections corresponding to the current state-of-the-art of rock, soft ground and cut-and-cover tunneling. The program contains logic to permit estimates of cost of complicated tunnel-shaft systems; it is not necessary to input quantities, as the program calculates those from the tunnel design that is internally generated. In any estimate, the program bases its cost computation on user-input requirements and site conditions, such as tunnel shape and size, shaft depth, ground characteristics, construction methods, and other factors. To provide great flexibility, the user of the program is provided with options for accepting designs built into the program or overriding these designs by his own inputs. An illustrative example is presented.

A detailed investigation of the stability in cyanide solutions of native gold and gold-silver tellurides in a flotation concentrate from the Golden Mile, Kalgoorlie, has been undertaken to assess whether leaching under different conditions can be used to quantify the distribution of Au between native gold and gold-silver tellurides, as suggested by, for example, Chryssoulis and Cabri (1990). The leaching was carried out on +20 µm native gold and gold-silver tellurides separated from a high-grade flotation concentrate and then diluted with barren quartz. The material leached assayed 270 ppm Au and 118 ppm Te and the leach conditions used were:- Stage 1: Leaching in dilute cyanide (0 .1 % ) at pH 9 .5 for 24 hours to dissolve native gold but not gold-silver tel­lurides. Stage 2: Leaching the residue from Stage 1 in strong cyanide (2%) and pH 12.5 for 96 hours to dissolve gold-silver tellurides.

Many Third World African countries are well-endowed with minerals - especially gold and diamonds - while only a few have important base metal deposits. For decades since colonial rule, political and economic conditions discouraged interest by Western capital. Influence from Soviet Bloc countries, however, has declined with the move toward multi-party rule. And the left wing orientation, once widely favored by Third World African countries, has almost disappeared. With International Monetary Fund (IMF) encouragement, these Third World African countries now encourage representational government and solicit western finance to expand their industries. Mining is especially encouraged. The North American mining industry is following the same trail as other capital intensive industries and looking abroad for opportunities. The Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada released figures that show exploration expenditures in that country were halved between 1987 and 1990. Figures for the United States are not so easily found but every indication points to a downward trend. While total annual expenditures on US exploration by corporations as a group are either declining or remaining constant, expenditures away from North America is increasing. Gold exploration expenditures in 1991 by the major companies tracked by Minerals Economics Group were less in the United States than for Latin America and the Southwest Pacific combined. The same study showed as much was spent in the Republic of South Africa and "Other" areas combined as in the United States. Expenditures by major corporations in these "Other" areas amount to only 5.2% of their total budget. Third World Africa is a major component of these "Other" areas.

INTRODUCTION The net smelter return (NSR) calculations made on various smelter-refiner alternatives, is usually done by taking the gross metal value less metal deductions, smelter-refiner charges and transportation-insurance costs. An important further step in the calculations is the financial charges imputed by refining time, transportation delays, to the time gold is returned (if tolled) or paid for if bought by the refiner. Metal that is priced in advance of payment also requires a forward premium that the mine may or may not be getting. This is a hidden cost that is often omitted from the calculations. Segmentation of each of the above costs are vital to see where improvements can be made through negotiations, better choice of metal pricing or transportation alternatives. BASIC NSR CALCULATIONS SMELTER-REFINER CHARGES Payable Metals - Treatment Refining Charges: Since these can vary from one smelter to another, the effect of a $25 per ounce price increase/decrease should be calculated and kept in mind. This effect is compared to differences in refining/treatment charge and a total smelter/refiner cost on a cost per ounce of dore, gold, or a dry ton of concentrate. Transportation - Insurance: Research has to be done on transportation alternatives perhaps with some assistance from the smelters, railroads or trucking companies. For dore, the U.S. postal service is viable and inexpensive. For railroads, deal with the regional office ie., B&N El Paso, if production warrants regular bulk shipments. Spot rates tend to be higher. A small mine producing concentrates usually goes to the nearest smelter due to extremely high transportation costs. Here is where a refiner can help. Insurance-Quotes for rates on dore/ concentrates are easily obtainable, but the mine has to shop for the best rates. Your insurance broker is the best source of this information. Differences between Mine and Smelter/Refiners Metal losses can be caused by the following: - Concentrate dry weight differences caused by moisture determination or faulty scales (often at the mine). - Sample bias by poor preparation practices on either side ie., grinding of the sample removing gold; or a poorly mixed concentrate. Dore bullion has no such difficulties.

Identifying the optimum ultimate height for heap leaching ore requires the consideration of a number of competing factors. A primary limitation is the reduction in the permeability of the ore with increasing heap heights. At low permeabilities the heap can blind off, cause serious ponding and runoff, and become very difficult to rinse at closure. The authors present a laboratory methodology that has been successfully used on several projects to identify the maximum height for controlling heap permeability.

During the last few years, significant advances continue to have been made in aspects of grouting technologies used for ground treatment in advance of tunnelling. In permeation grouting, fundamental researches have continued into improving the penetrability characteristics of cement-based grouts. The twin advantages of field regrinding normal grouts to reduce cement particle sizes, and incorporating special additives into stable grouts, are now being systematically exploited in major soft ground tunnelling projects in Europe. The methodologies of jet grouting continue to be developed with special attention being paid to qa/qc issues, reducing unit production costs, and improving predictive capabilities for subsequent settlements.

Introduction 1300 BC, Egypt. Pharaoh, the god-king, owned all things. He was the only mine operator. As the provider of all things, Pharaoh had great expectations of his officials who gathered the wealth. Pharaoh's official, the mine foreman, was at a gold mine site to see that royal expectations were met. For the official, it could mean a promotion to the good life here and to the godly life hereafter. When he checked the haul for sufficient progress, a lot was at stake. The miner wore a loincloth, perhaps a headband and, if he was a prisoner, ankle manacles. Only an oil lamp helped illuminate the hot, dusty blackness. A fire at the base of the quartz ore face competed for scarce air. The ore so heated crumbled at the prompting of copper wedges. Confined to a crouch, the miner tossed chunks of ore onto a rope-mesh which, when loaded, was drawn up and lugged out. On the surface, the gold was ground to dust. Then it was transported by donkey caravan to the royal depot. There it was weighed, recorded, and distributed to workshops. Many minerals mined Egypt had gold mines to the south in Nubia and to the east in the desert and Sinai. Indeed, gold underwrote Egypt's prosperity. With a constant gold supply, fewer hungry hands robbed burial crypts and tombs. Gold was sacred, "the flesh of the gods." The shiny metal financed the army that policed the desert mining routes and guarded the gold caravans from Bedouin marauders. Gold theft was an offense to the gods. Anyone caught with gold `in his lunchpail,' so to speak, could say goodbye to life, both in this world and the next. In addition to gold, Egypt possessed other mined riches that allowed the Egyptian civilization to flourish. From Sinai and Nubia came copper. So abundant was the red metal that it enabled Egypt to become the supreme power, before the advent of iron. Also mined were amethyst, turquoise, feldspar, jasper, carnelian, and garnet. These were used for the rich inlay work that distinguished Egyptian jewelry and cloisonne. But Egypt's most endurable and awesome material was its stonework - for statues and obelisks and in temples, tombs, and pyramids. Stone quarrying was a vast enterprise. One expedition boasted nearly 10,000 men. These included 5000 laborer soldiers, 130 skilled quarrymen and stonecutters, and - egads! - even 20 scribes. In addition, there were thousands of officials, priests, and officers grooms. There were even fishermen, to provide the multitudes with the catch of the day. Mining methods detailed In 1300 BC, quarrying techniques had changed little since the age of the pyramids some 1300 years before. At that time, in 2600 BC, limestone was locally quarried and fashioned into the blocks of the pyramids. A basic limestone mining method was tunnel quarrying. A ramp was built up to the face of a cliff. A monkey stage was then erected on a ramp. While standing on the stage, quarrymen carved out a rectangular niche in the cliff. The niche was large enough for a quarryman to crawl into. With a wooden mallet, he hammered long copper chisels along the edges of the niche floor to free up the back and sides of the block. The quarryman climbed out of the niche and removed the stage. He then carved out a series of holes in the cliff face for what would be the bottom of the block. The quarryman pounded wooden wedges into the holes. He watered the wedges until they were soaked. The water-logged wedges expanded, splitting the stone along the line of holes. The freed-up block was then levered down from the cliff. On the ground, the blocks were placed on sledges. Men pulled these to nearby water transport. Without block and tackle pulleys, paved roads, and wheels, this was no mean feat. Each block weighed an average of 2.3 t (2.5 st). Whenever possible, the quarrying was done directly from the surface. Cement is used as an established agglomerating agent in gold heap leaching operations to maintain heap permeability and prevent migration of fines. In addition to agglomeration, cement provides protective alkalinity control. However, the amount of cement needed for agglomeration is usually very different from the amount necessary for pH control. As a result, cement is usually added in excess. Overdose of cement can result in reduced gold recovery and/or lengthy detoxification. Betz Laboratories has identified polymeric agents that provide the benefits of cement without negatively impacting gold recovery when used alone or with lime. Independent laboratory tests also strongly suggest that the polymer/lime system can significantly reduce heap detoxification time.
