This paper will present the results of an analysis of several abandoned coal mine projects and includes field data for over a dozen different reclamation projects recently completed in the state of West Virginia. The analysis was performed with the objective of summarizing and or classification of the environmental consequences with reference to the characteristics of the mining facilities (surface, underground, etc.). The analysis also addressed the itemized cost of remediation with respect to procedures, environmental concerns and time. The results of the analysis are that each abandoned coal mine site in West Virginia have/had many unique features and in most cases include a combination of environmental concerns that complicate comparisons. The study also revealed that the abandoned mine land program for mines abandoned prior to 1977, that is being financed by a tax on the production of coal, has produced many benefits for the state of West Virginia. This grant program administered by the Office of Surface Mining, has resulted in a high quality methodology of remediation that has been successful for many years in greatly minimizing and/or eliminating environmental concerns from abandoned coal mines.

When pumping abrasive slurry mixtures, special attention must be given to pump design and construction. The second article in this two-part series describes some design features to consider when selecting centrifugal slurry pumps. Hydraulic Design Most centrifugal pumps are conventionally designed to achieve the desired hydraulic performance at the highest efficiency and lowest cost when handling clear fluids in reasonably clean environments. Manufacturing limitations are not imposed on the configuration of the pump, since conventional materials such as cast iron, bronze, and stainless steel are used. Manufacturers and buyers usually select the highest specific speed commensurate with the lowest cost attainable. Part life is almost infinite. When a centrifugal pump is designed for slurry service, the important factors in pump design are wear and materials of construction; size and efficiency assume lesser importance. The pump must operate at low rotational speed and the impeller has to be a truly radial flow design. These factors immediately determine that the pump must be of a low specific speed design in the range of 600 to 1800. The specific speed is a type number that is constant for all geometrically similar pumps; it designates the geometry of the impeller and casing. [ ] where n = rpm, Q = flow (US gpm), H = total head (ft), and Ns = specific speed. Since wear is a function of velocity it can be shown that for a given head and capacity, wear will increase with increased Ns. Centrifugal Pump Casing The casing has a profound effect on performance. If designed incorrectly it can destroy a large part of the energy given to the flow by the impeller, resulting in low efficiency, high hydraulic forces, and excessive wear on both the casing and impeller. In a conventional spiral volute, the static pressure around the impeller is uniform only when there is a free vortex velocity distribution in the volute, i.e., when the spiral flow from the impeller coincides with that of the volute spiral. This occurs only at the best efficiency point (BEP), between the pump's best operating zone and over capacity zone. Departure from the free vortex velocity distribution in the volute at partial or over capacities produces circumferential pressure gradients at the impeller periphery, which is directly proportional to the specific gravity of the mixture being pumped. At partial or over capacities, the flow will not tolerate the abrupt deflection at the tongue and severe energy losses and wear are created near the casing throat and on the impeller. Concentric and semi-concentric volute designs produce uniform static pressures at the impeller periphery and make the pump, much less sensitive to "off"' BEP operation. Hydraulic forces and wear are considerably reduced-eliminating the tongue prevents abrupt deflection of the flow, turbulence is minimized, and the velocity in the casing volute and throat is reduced. Good efficiency is sustained over a wider operating hand. Casings of this design are easy to cast. • Spiral volute (conventional)-Radius to the outer periphery of the casing and the volute area constantly increases. • Semi-concentric casing-Radius to the outer periphery of the casing and volute area remain constant within a certain angle. • Concentric casing-Radius to the outer periphery of the casing and volute area remain constant through 360°. The degree of concentricity must be reconciled with efficiency, hydraulic radial load, and wear for each specific speed chosen. Up to 1200 Ns the casings can be fully concentric without sacrificing too much efficiency. Above 1200 Ns, the casings can be semi-concentric. The angle of concentricity

The Appalachian coalfield, located in eastern Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia, has been one of the most productive in the United States. Total production from the Appalachian coalfield during 1994 was 340.8 Mt (375.4 million st), or 37% of the 929 Mt (1 billion st) produced in the United States that year. This region contains various coal types from high- to mid-sulfur coal in Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia to low-sulfur, compliance steam coal and premium-grade metallurgical coal in eastern Kentucky, Virginia and southern West Virginia. The region's product is in high demand in domestic and export markets. Productivity continues to improve, resulting in the primary coal operators solidifying their market positions.

Asbestos fibers are highly fibrous silicate fibers that are distinguished by having a large aspect (length to diameter) ratio and are crystallized in an asbestiform habit that causes them to separate into very thin fibers or fibrils. These fibers are distinct from nonasbestiform cleavage fragments and may appear as thick, short fibers which break along cleavage planes without the high strength and flexibility of asbestiform fibers. Since cleavage fragments of respirable dimensions have generally proven nonpathogenic in animal studies, little data exists on assessing well-characterized preparations of cleavage fragments in in vitro models. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) issued Program Information Bulletin P09-03in April of 2008, providing formal guidance on using programs that model the redistribution of stress during underground mining of coal. A key part of this guidance is visual observation and mapping of ground conditions. If a correlation between ground conditions and model output can be established, the model is considered to be verified, and can be used to guide mine design in similar ground. A simple scale is recommended for ranking observed roof, rib, and floor conditions. This paper discusses optimization and implementation of a ground condition rating scheme in the gateroads of a deep underground longwall coal mine. Roughly 80% of each gateroad length deteriorated in a fairly uniform manner. However, this manner varied between gateroads, as did pillar size. The implementation of a ground condition mapping program, similar to that recommended in PIB 09-03, was successful in characterizing the ground response to mining in gateroads of a longwall coal mine.

The exploitation of the underground is currently undergoing a major transformation process. Besides mining, alternative ways of utilization are playing an increasingly important role. These alternative utilizations include the storage of gases, the disposal of radioactive wastes and the implementation of geothermal storage facilities. In addition, more and more mining operations are being shut down, like the German hard coal mining industry in 2018. But the integrity of closed mines must be ensured in the post-mining phase.

Although once fairly common as a method of coal preparation in the United States, dry cleaning has virtually disappeared. Low-rank coals used for power generation in the western U.S. are suited for dry cleaning because water has limited availability in the American west. Surface moisture added through wet cleaning offsets energy improvement achieved from mineral matter reduction. Information will be presented on the commercial application of dry cleaning in North America, the historic development and current status of the technology, and the introduction of modern processing theory and control technology to the design of dry cleaning equipment and plants.

A study of the application of mine tailings as precast construction materials through alkali activation has been carried out, focusing on efficiently activating mine tailings, reducing alkali consumption, decreasing curing time and improving compressive strength. Firstly, the effect of temperature on the alkali activation of mine tailings was studied. Secondly, the impact of additives, i.e., calcium hydroxide and aluminum oxide, on the compressive strength of samples was investigated. Thirdly, the impact of forming pressure on sample strength was studied. Test results showed that unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of 40 MPa was achieved with the geopolymerization products through optimization. Finally, to elucidate the geopolymerization mechanism of mine tailings, microscopic and spectroscopic techniques including SEM/EDX, XRD, and FTIR spectroscopy were used to investigate the microstructure and the elemental and phase composition of the geopolymerization products. The findings of the present work provide a practical method for applying mine tailings as precast construction materials through alkali activation.

Toronto as a geographical area provides an exceptionally wide variety of subsoil stratiphication. Tunneling consequently required a very wide range of adaptabilities to meet its changing conditions. This discussion will provide a summary of work performed in both earth and rock formation using three of our recent works to describe a Contractor's experience. The general subsoil stratigraphy is known to consist of deposits laid down during the Illionian Glaciation followed by the Samgamon Interglacial Stage and finally the Wisconsin Glaciation. All these deposits are underlain by shale bedrock of the Dundas formation. As a whole the Dundas formation is predominantly a greyish blue, thinly bedded shale. The engineering characteristics of the shale vary considerably, however, between a blue clay (argillaceous) shale and a much lighter (in colour) silty and sometimes sandy (arenaceous) shale, and occasional limestone layers. The Illionian deposits are usually found to be layers of pebbly clay till and an overlaying layer of contorted varved-clay. These glacial deposits can be overlain by a thick layer of sandy silt to silty sand which is identified as the Samgamon Interglacial sediments. Because of the action of erosion the Wisconsin till sheets, many times separated by interstadial sands, can vary greatly in their number of layers from zero to three or more.

Worldwide minerals exploration slipped in 1992 from 1991 levels. Although industrial production figures showed the US economy emerging from recession in early 1992, it was not until February 1993 that the lagging indicator of unemployment dropped to 7%. Most other industrialized countries are still in recession. Preliminary data for 1992 showed industrial production dropping in Japan (5%), Germany (1.4%), the United Kingdom (0.5%) and France (1.4%). The slowdown in industrial production led to reduced mineral demand. This resulted in lean cash flows from mining operations, which squeezed exploration funding. Although mineral prices were steady during most of 1992, some mineral commodity prices began falling in late 1992 and early this year. Exploration 1991-1992 According to Metals Economics Group (MEG), planned 1992 exploration expenditures were down by about 5%. Geographically, the leading exploration target was the United States with 21 % of the expenditures, followed by Australia (19%), Canada (18%), Latin America (15%), South Africa (9%) and the western Pacific (7.5%). The remaining 10% was split between Europe and Africa. There were absolute increases in exploration expenditures in the United States and Latin America. Latin America showed the largest increase. The change in the Mexican mining law allowing foreign ownership of mines should result in the inflow of direct foreign investment in Mexico's mining industry.

Nowadays, most grinding mills driven by a wrap-around ring motor are operating successfully. Some of the earlier problems could be attributed to the lateral stiffness and stability of their bearings. As a result, modifications to the bearings included the rearrangement of the shoes, or the addition of more shoes, closer to the horizontal centerline. This technical paper reports a study of the effects of bearings on the lateral stiffness of grinding mills driven by a wrap-around ring motor. The discussions cover the design of the four shoe trunnion bearings and examine the effects of the angular location of the shoes.

Safety is the No. 1 concern of any drill contractor or mine operator. Everyone in the industry knows a safe site helps stabilize operational costs and enables higher productivity. When it comes to exploration drilling, research has proven a majority of injuries are caused by the mishandling of coring rods. A driller helper will typically handle up to 50 rods per shift or up to 15,000 rods per year. With an annual 340 t (750,000 lb) in rods managed by hand, the risk of serious injury is extremely high. Indicator Kriging (IK) is being commonly applied to mineral resource assessment problems. More recently, indicator simulation has also been used for sensitivity analysis and difficult change of support problems. The essential theory underlying indicator geostatistics has not changed since its introduction 10 years ago; however, the last decade has produced many important developments in its implementation. The objective of this paper is to consider some of the more important implementation details. Examples from the Porgera gold deposit in Papua New Guinea are used to illustrate the steps in an indicator geostatistical study and the importance of various implementation decisions. Specifically, in many precious metals deposits the continuity of the grades is typically quite anisotropic. This anisotropy varies in both magnitude and direction throughout the deposit. Building a model of this anisotropy can considerably improve the local kriged or simulated points. One approach to build this model is presented. In addition, there is typically more than one mineralization style and geological rock type; the spatial character of the mineralization can be quite different within each geological rock type. The rational treatment of anisotropy and geological subdivisions is common to all mineral resource assessment procedures; the importance of this qualitative geological information is not diminished with more sophisticated techniques such as indicator kriging. This paper presents an overdue comprehensive look at the practical aspects of indicator methodology. Many of the techniques and procedures documented in this paper have been developed during the course of detailed mine feasibility studies.

The Chambers Creek Interceptor Sewer Tunnel project consisted of 2-1/2 miles (4 kilometres) of nominal 9-foot (2.7-metre) O.D. tunnel driven through predominantly glacially overridden soils. Mole-Collucio Construction Company initially elected to drive the entire tunnel with a Lovat TBM. However, this machine could not control the fast raveling ground conditions which developed when the TBM encountered sands overlying very dense, hard glacial till or boulders. As a result, a shield and digger machine was brought in for a 1700-foot (518-metre) long segment. Pumped wells spaced roughly 50 to 125 feet (15 to 38 metres) apart were utilized to dewater about two-thirds of the alignment during construction. Initial support consisted of steel ribs and wood lagging, with a final lining comprised of pre-cast concrete pipe segments grouted in place.

It is uncommon these days to read a business magazine or newspaper without finding a reference to Knowledge Management (KM), and its critical importance to corporate success. One definition of KM is: “getting the right knowledge to the right people at the right time and helping them to put information into action in such ways that strive to improve organizational performance.” In the minerals processing industry we could assert that we have been practicing this for years through effective operator training. In most cases we would probably be wrong. Training has certainly filled the need of addressing safety and basic operational issues, but we must collectively focus on education (learning), and the difference, as measured in outcomes, is not at all subtle. This paper briefly examines the history of training and education in the mining industry, and looks in more detail at the impact of one company’s approach to empower its workforce, while keeping the ultimate goal clearly in mind: “The great end of knowledge is not knowledge, but action.” (T.H. Edmonton South LRT is the latest expansion of the Subway system in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada: Consisting of twin 5.8m segmental lined tunnels, 280m long, driven by a Lovat EPB machine. The key challenges were as follows. A 6% downhill grade. Tight radius curves of 250m.Overlying structures within 3m of the tunnel. Strata consisting of sand above the water table, glacial tills and bed rock below the water table. Located within The University of Alberta Campus and adjacent to a hospital. Northern Alberta climate with winter temperatures routinely falling below—minus 30 degrees Celsius. This paper provides a case history and outlines the challenges involved in completing this project.

The 30th annual short course ?Grouting Fundamentals and Current Practice? was held at the Colorado School of Mines, June 22-26, 2009. The field demonstration portion of the course was conducted June 25, at Hayward Baker, Inc.?s yard in Broomfield, CO. The full-scale field demonstration annually presents many different types of drilling equipment being operated as well as various grouting methods being performed under different field conditions. As part of the field demonstration, the class is shown the proportioning, mixing, testing and injection of various cement grout mixes into sand columns under controlled and measured conditions. These sand column demonstrations have been conducted under controlled and measured conditions each year since 1999 as part of the short course. The sand column demonstrations were conducted prior to 1999, but with less quality control and minimal record keeping of the proportioning, mixing, testing, injection pressures and the final permeation results. The goal of the sand column demonstration is to show the students the effect of the water cement ratio and the use of admixture as well as the fineness of the cement, portland versus ultrafine, used has on the engineering properties of the grout and the grout?s vertical permeation through the sand. Test results for the demonstrations conducted in 1999 and for two separate demonstrations, one at the grout course and one at Geo Denver, conducted in 2000 were published in the 2001 proceedings of the Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) (Henn et al. 2001). The test results for the 2002 and the 2003 demonstrations were published in the 2005 proceeding of the RETC (Henn et al. 2005).

Exploration activities in 1980 felt the effects of unstable economic conditions and oscillating metal prices. In the cyclical, boom-or-bust precious metals and uranium markets, precious metals activity flourished and uranium was definitely in a slump. By November last year, the price for vellowcake was down nearly $20 from two years earlier. Many mining and milling operations closed, particularly in Wyoming, New Mexico, and Colorado. Decreasing emphasis on nuclear power continued to impact the market, as did the Three Mile Island accident of 1979. Earlier forecasts estimated that 10 to 12 reactors would be ordered per year by US utilities throughout the 1980s, but current forecasts suggest that it may be 1983 or 1984, or even later, before any new US plants are ordered, according to Thomas A. Boyden, vice president of Nuclear Exchange Corp. "Without those new plants, the consumption loss to industry is 4 to 5 million pounds (1.8-2.3 kt) of uranium per year. The cumulative loss to the industry is currently estimated at 25 to 30 million pounds (11.3-13.6 kt)," Boyden said in a May 1980 presenta¬tion. Despite the plunging market, there were a few notable uranium explora¬tion programs: •Exxon expanded uranium exploration in New Mexico, where the company reportedly took preliminary steps toward acquiring mineral rights to a 22-km2 prospect, 19 km south of Santa Fe. • Mountain States Resources began the second phase of an exploratory drilling program on its Sinbad/ Solo prospect in Utah. • Also in Utah, Cotter Corp. drilled its first exploratory hole in the Dirty Devil River district. Exploration for precious metals in 1980, however, appeared to tend toward the opposite extreme. High prices sparked near feverish searches in Alaska, California, Colorado, and Nevada. Numerous mines abandoned years ago were revived with some signs of success. Significant gold finds were reported in California and Nevada: • Homestake Mining Co. announced a gold discovery in California estimated to contain over 5 Mt with an average grade of about 5.8 g/t. Because the deposit consists of finely disseminated particles not visible to the eye, many speculate that prospectors bypassed the area during the 1849 California gold rush. • Newmont Mining Corp. discovered two gold ore bodies-Maggie Creek and Gold Quarry. Maggie Creek reportedly contains an estimated 13.7 t of gold in 4.3 Mt of ore, and Gold Quarry contains about 31.1 t of gold in 9 Mt of low grade ore and 2.3 Mt of higher grade ore. Highlights of this year's exploration review include articles on the modest growth recorded in geophysical activity, technical developments in exploration geochemistry, the variety of new instruments being tested or made available for exploration, and a state-by-state exploration review for the year.

Recent advances in GPS, machine guidance technology and telemetry allow an unprecedented level of control of surface mining operations. GPS technology can now locate the bucket of a shovel or the blade of a dozer within 50mm (2 inches).Some of the outcomes possible are: precise selective mining – even when the ore is visually indistinguishable from waste: tracking grade and tonnage of every ore parcel through the mine: real time productivity monitoring: detailed post accident safety analysis: tracking the movements of every piece of equipment. This paper will consider the contribution that GPS based machine control systems can make to ensuring that surface mining projects deliver the outcomes promised in the feasibility studies. Case studies of installations are presented.
