This paper describes the recent application of gasketed, precast concrete segmental lining design that has improved tunneling productivity and quality. The speci?c segment arrangement includes: six-piece ring with equal 60 degree gasketed segments, juxtaposed key and counter-key segments, trapezoidal and parallelogram shaped segments, inclined and skewed radial joints and plastic circumferential joint connectors. This allows rapid, but accurate ring erection, reducing mine cycle times. The design avoids cruciform joints, minimizes potential gasket damage and eliminates the need for separate left and right ring molds. The implementation on the Los Angeles ECIS and NEIS sewer projects is described.

Reliable prediction of wall pressures in a coal silo demands careful characterization of the stress-strain properties of the coal. This paper describes the results of triaxial compression tests on a typical fine-ground coal used in power generation and describes the fitting of several different constitutive models to the data. The fitted parameters for the constitutive models are well suited to application infinite element analyses. The different models are used to give the reader flexibility in choosing a model and to show the shortcomings of some models. To explore the quality of the fitting process, the fitted results are compared with finite element predictions of the triaxial test itself.

Minproc Engineers has carried out the design construction and commissioning of thirty two process plants in the period 1978-87. Twenty eight are gold silver recovery plants, and of these twenty two were gold alone and six were gold and silver. In most plants carbon was used for gold adsorption. Desorption has been carried out using the USBM Homestake method, the Anglo American Research Laboratories method, and the Micron Methanol method. Electrowinning has utilised steel wool, stainless steel wool, and aluminium cathodes. Electrorefining using polished stainless steel cathodes is practised. "INTRODUCTION The Butte district of Montana is well-known as one of the biggest historic producers of copper in the world. It is also a classic example of a porphyry Cu-Mo system that has been overprinted by zoned, polymetallic (Cu-Zn-Pb-Ag) lode mineralization. After copper, silver was the next most important metal mined from Butte, with over 700 million ounces of total Ag production between 1880 and the present day. Although many papers have been written on the mineralogy of the early porphyry Cu-Mo mineralization and the high-grade Cu-rich lodes in the center of the district, relatively little information exists on the mineralogy of silver in Butte. The purpose of this paper is to summarize past and present silver production trends for the district, and to combine previously published work with new research to examine the mineralogy of silver in the Butte mining district. BUTTE HISTORIC SILVER PRODUCTION According to a recent USGS compilation1, Butte is one of the most Ag-rich porphyry deposits in the world, both in terms of average Ag grade (8.6 g/ton) and total production + reserves (Fig. 1). It is also the 2nd biggest Ag-producing mining district in the U.S. (after the Couer d’Alene district, Idaho). Annual silver and copper production data for the Butte district, compiled from various sources2,3,4, are summarized in Figure 2. Peak production of Ag and Cu was in 1917. While Ag production gradually declined in the ensuing decades, Cu production remained strong until the years leading up to the closure of the Berkeley Pit in 1982. In 1984, mining of the nearby Continental Pit resumed under a different operator, and continues to the present day. The Continental mine produced an average of 35,000 metric tons Cu and 575,000 oz Ag per year between 1984 and 20044. These figures do not take into account a period of mine closure in 2001-2003 due to an unexpected hike in utility prices. The long-term decline in Ag/Cu ratio of ore mined in Butte (Figure 3) is due to several factors, including: 1) changes in metal prices; 2) a downwards decrease in Ag/Cu ratio of most of the lodes with depth below surface; and 3) a shift in mining methods from selective underground mining of high-grade veins to open-pit mining of the bulk rock."

The conditioning of phosphate flotation feed with anionic flotation reagents was identified as a high- priority research topic during a beneficiation work- shop sponsored by the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR). FIPR subsequently solicited research proposals to identify the mechanisms of reagent adsorption, to determine scale-up relationships for conditioner design, and to investigate the effect of conditioning variables on reagent adsorption and flotation performance. The two-year research project was awarded to Jacobs Engineering. Somasundaran, Inc., the University of Florida Mineral Resources Research Center, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines assisted Jacobs. Two mechanisms of anionic collector adsorption were detected by spectrographic analyses and confirmed by microcalorimetric measurements. The mechanisms provided a sound technical basis for the empirical practice of conditioning phosphate flotation feed at a high percent solids. Tests performed in laboratory and pilot-scale agitated tanks indicated that power intensity may be used as a reliable scale-up parameter for anionic conditioning of phosphate slurry. Excessive agitator speed during conditioning was found to be detrimental to anionic flotation performance. Some dimensional ratios of anionic conditioners were found to be consistent with good utilization of agitation energy. Laboratory conditioning and flotation tests demonstrated that adsorption of collector onto phosphate and the subsequent recovery of phosphate in anionic flotation were significantly influenced by the quantity and quality of water used in conditioning. Conversely, the quality of water used in flotation was more influential on the recovery of quartz in the concentrate. A comprehensive survey of anionic conditioners and conditioning practice in the Florida phosphate industry was also performed during this project. The study clearly showed that flotation testing with laboratory conditions typical of scientific research gives different results than laboratory testing with simulated plant conditions. The effects of test conditions on laboratory test results should be carefully considered by investigators planning and conducting applied research.

The methodology involves a framework for structured data collection using questionnaires, statistical analysis, discussion on critical methodological aspects, and interpretation of results focusing on key aspects of interest for designers of KM systems. The paper concludes by summarizing the methodology’s outcome and proposing perspectives for further research.

Problems in new strip mine development is a subject that could require several days to cover adequately. Coupled with the fertile imagination of television writers, we could probably expand it into a series rivaling Gunsmoke in longevity with just as many shootouts at sundown. It would-of course-be subject to a high Neilson Rating. To bring the subject into perspective, we will limit the comments to a general discussion covering western strip coal developments. Stimulated by increased demand for low sulfur coal, surface mineable western coal operations began a shift into high gear approximately four years ago. Then came last year's "energy crisis" that increased the pressure on coal development not only in the west, but nationwide. Several eastern power plants having dual oil and coal burning facilities were directed to discontinue using oil. Also, a number of new south and southwestern power plants scheduled to burn natural gas or of I commenced an ordered conversion to other fuels, namely, coal. The involved utilities with reserve positions accelerated their planning while others began the search for long-term commitments from coal producing companies. In addition, announcements were made for proposed mine mouth coal gasification projects in New Mexico, Wyoming, and North Dakota.

Arsenical ores may be either leached directly, or first smelted to volatilize as much arsenic and sulfur as possible, and the resulting product, called speiss, is then leached. "Tin ore from the southeast of Yunnan in China is a complex polymetallic low-grade ore. Because of the highly disseminated extent ore, cassiterite flotation was applied in industrial production instead of the low efficient gravitational separation. Benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) was widely used as a collector in cassiterite flotation, but the consumption of BHA was large. In this study, the influence of octanol in cassiterite flotation from the southeast of Yunnan using BHA as the collector was investigated. The results indicated that single octanol showed almost no flotation capability to cassiterite without BHA. However a small amount addition of octanol as the auxiliary collector can decrease the consumption of BHA significantly, while did not reduced the recovery of cassiterite obviously. Infrared spectra analysis indicated that the single octanol adsorbed on the surface of cassiterite was unsteady adsorption, and a new entity assembled of BHA and octanol in a well manner was able to adsorb on the surface of cassiterite steadily. The probable self-assembly structure model of BHA and octanol existing on the surface of cassiterite was analyzed. INTRODUCTION Cassiterite is the prime and economic mineral from which tin metal is extracted economically (Qin et al., 2011). The estimated tin metal resources in the world is about 4.9 million tonnes, about 30.5% of which is distributed in China (Mineral commodity summaries, 2013). Cassiterite has many characteristics such as including heavy, hard, and extremely brittle in nature. Hence cassiterite is preferentially concentrated by gravity separators. However, the influence of particle size on gravity concentration is obviously. The separation efficiency is very high for coarse particles while it drops down considerably for fine sizes. (Turner and Hallewell, 1993). Application of flotation and development of selective surfactants have made it possible to recover fine and ultrafine cassiterite from the gravity tailings. A substantial amount of research work on cassiterite flotation has been reported in the past years. The outcome of such research has helped to develop various collector reagents such as cupferron (Vivian, 1927), sodium dodecyl sulfate (Edwards and Ewers, 1951), sodium oleate (Collins et al., 1968), salicyaldehyde (Marabini, 1978), alkyl and aryl arsonic acids (Senior and Poling, 1986), alkyl and aryl phosphonic acids (Gruner and Bilsing, 1992), alkyl sulfosuccinamates (Khangaonkar and Kamarudin, 1994), and alkyl hydroxamates (Sreenivas and Padmanabhan, 2002)."

"Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of an open-pit mine has several challenges. A good quality mesh of the model domain is a pre-requisite for convergence in solution. Good quality tetrahedral meshing and insertion of prism layers in faceted open-pit mine geometry is complicated due to presence of numerous vertices and ridges. Presence of vertices and ridges result in poor quality tetra elements and holes in prism layers, which cause instability in the model. Good quality pit bottom prism mesh elements significantly improve the formation of velocity boundary layer and thermal boundary layer at the pit bottom. This results in an expected temperature dependent micrometeorological buoyancy flow in the pit. Whereas, model geometry without a prism layer, results in abrupt temperature gradient near pit bottom. Buoyancy flow and recirculation have significant effect in lifting mechanism of fugitive dust particles generated near pit bottom. Representative initial and boundary conditions and selection of appropriate turbulence model have significant influences on the simulation results. In this paper, three-dimensional models of open-pit mines are developed using commercial CFD software (CRADLE-CFD). Important constraints and various consequences in modeling complex open-pit geometries are presented. INTRODUCTION Application of Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to model an open-pit mine to predict fugitive dust and pollutant concentrations in and around a mine is relatively new. In former Soviet republic (USSR), Baklanov [1] and Belousov [2, 3] presented numerical models of pollutant transport in open-pit mines in Arctic regions. In recent years, advances in mathematical and computational fields have enabled better modeling of pollutant dispersion phenomenon around mines using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Several CFD software packages have been used by various researchers to model the pollutant transport in open-pit mines. Works by Alvarez et al. [4]; Lowndes et al. [5]; Silvester et al. [6]; Torno et al. [7]; Choudhury and Bandopadhyay [8]; Collingwood et al. [9]; Raj et al. [10] and Flores et al. [11]; are examples of application of various commercial and open source CFD packages (COMSOL, ANSYS, OpenFOAM) to model pollutant transport in open-pit mines. These researches provided a strong background for additional research involving CFD modeling of open-pit mines. Due to the limitations of computational times and capacity, 3D modeling and various aspects of fugitive dust dispersion in open-pit mines remained unexplored."

The Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association (CEMA) specification B105.1 "Welded Steel Conveyor Pulleys" adequately defines pulley assembly standards for light material handling applications. However, most mining applications demand pulleys of higher reliability and load capacity than that offered by CEMA standard pulleys. Various sources have published specifications for "Engineered" conveyor pulleys. Typically, these specifications require T-section type pulleys applicable to operating belt tensions exceeding 439 N/mm (2,500 lb./in.). This paper examines the application of CEMA standard pulleys, T-section pulleys and also a mining duty pulley design. The mining duty pulley fills the void between CEMA standard pulleys and T-section pulleys and can eliminate the high cost and long lead times associated with T-section type pulleys.

At first glance the staid Joralemon background does not seem to equate with the life of adventure that irresistibly called me for over 70 years. But my ancestors had their adventures too. My father's family were Dutch Reformed Protestants who had energy or daring enough to come to America to escape the Catholic persecution that followed the Massacre of St. Bartholemew. The first Joralemon came from Friesland to New Amsterdam m 1636, just after Peter Stuyvesant. My father's mother's family, the Berdans, were French Huguenots who came to northern New Jersey only a little later to escape the Catholic domination in France. Some say that the first Berdan to come to America was given all the land between the Passaic and the Hacken-sack Rivers by King James. Whatever, the Berdan family settled there and was able to make a scanty living by farming and selling their produce in Manhattan. The spirit of adventure in my mother's family was just as tenuous. Gamaliel Beaman was pastor of a shipload of Puritans who came to Massachusetts in 1636. Gamaliel's descendents were peaceful farmers and some ministers in New England and later New York State. They had got all of the adventure out of their systems in the long and dangerous voyage across the Atlantic to escape religious persecution. The Joralemons and the Berdans married into families that had been in America almost as long as they had. On my father's side the Berdans, Doremus, DeGreys, Vanderbeeks, and Varicks showed by their names their Dutch or French Huguenot stock. The only one who achieved any fame was Peter Varick, who was George Washington's military secretary during the American Revolution. After this he was nine times mayor of New York and was one of the founders of Kings College, later Columbia University. He was responsible for one of my few ancestral claims to distinction. The lining of a mine shaft is one of the most important considerations in the planning and operation of an underground mine. Generally, the function of a shaft lining is to preserve the shaft opening in a manner compatible with the expected mine life and -the other shaft operations. Where shafts are the only means of surface access in a mine, they also serve a critical function for the safety of the entire underground operation. Routine repairs and maintenance work on the shaft linings are only possible in stable strata with only minor interruptions to the shaft operations.

A hybrid boundary element-finite element model was formulated to model roof-bolt reinforcement of roof strata with bedding planes. This model was used to analyze the stress distribution around a rectangular opening, with variables such as opening width-height ratio, number of bolts installed, number1 location of bedding planes, in-situ stresses, etc. The most critical areas are identified, and the number and length of roof bolt required are then determined. Two case examples are illustrated.

1.1 Biological Process Description Pintail Systems, Inc. (PSI) has developed and in partnership with their clients in the mining industry has applied biological remediation processes for detoxification of spent ore and process solutions from heap leach operations. Contaminants that are treated to mine closure levels or drinking water standards include cyanides (weak acid dissociable and total cyanides), thiocyanate, nitrates and heavy metals. Biological processes are both site-specific and ore-specific processes. PSI specializes in isolating indigenous microorgan­isms from spent ore and process solutions and augments them in the laboratory for enhanced bio-detoxification in the field. Bioaugmentation in the lab is a key to successful heap bio-detox in the field. In PSI's bioaugmentation processes native microorganisms are isolated from the spent ore environment and are tested for contaminant remediation capacity. A majority of the indigenous microbes will be tolerant of the spent ore environment but will not contribute to contaminant metabolism. Indigenous enrichment or biostimulation of these non-working microbes by adding trace nutrients can competitively inhibit the working microbes. For this reason PSI focuses on the bioaugmentation process where non-working microbes are discarded and the working population is enhanced through stress, mutation and exogenous enrichment before it is re-introduced to the heap and process solutions.

Based on previous investigations of ultrafine comminution in planetary ball mills, a new centrifugal mill has been developed which permits similar high stress conditions. Because this new type of mill is equipped with an immobile chamber, devices for measuring energy, for cooling the milling vessel, as well as, in continuous operation, for material feed and discharge can be more easily attached than to planetary ball mills. Observations of particle behaviour have shown that, in the case of dry grinding, most of the material is found on the mill walls even after short grinding times. Due to the fact that energy dissipation takes place mainly in the zone near the wall, a grinding system which reduces the amount of ball filling required is at an advantage.

INTRODUCTION This paper describes one of several research projects funded by the Advanced Research Projects Agency to extend the technology of rapid underground excavation. This study and field research effort are to investigate alternative means to determine rock and geological conditions in advance of a tunnel boring machine (TBM). Approximately 1 year of a planned 3-year program has resulted in the definition of three candidate drill systems. Hardware has been assembled to field test these candidates and testing has begun. The 3-year objective is to develop a single optimum prototype drill and test it in an active TBM operation.
