Dynatec Mining Ltd. contracted to sink a 1500-m (4920 ft) concrete-lined shaft for Falconbridge Nickel Mines in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. The shaft has an inside diameter of 6.3 m (20.5 ft) and is equipped with steel furnishings. Dynatec used the owner-supplied, 4.6-m (15.1 ft) diam, double-drum hoist to sink the shaft. For muck removal, 12.5¬t (13.8-st) buckets were used. The capacity of the concrete-¬placement buckets was 4.6 m3 (162.4 ft3). One of the unique features of the shaft sinking operation was the use of a two-¬boom, electric-hydraulic drill jumbo permanently mounted in the shaft sinking stage. An in-the-hole (ITH) drill was used to drill a 200-mm (8-in.) cut hole for the 4.8-m (16 ft), full face rounds. This paper describes the performance obtained with the electric-hydraulic drilling equipment and the high-capacity muck removal and concreting equipment.

Over the past few years, the use of fully grouted bolts to support the roof of underground openings has increased dramatically. While conventionally anchored bolts effectively reinforce the strata of over 80 percent of mine workings, the use of resin grouted bolts in areas of severe roof conditions has resulted in a substantial reduction in roof falls and an overall improvement in both safety and production. The Roof Control Group of Pittsburgh Technical Support Center, Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration, has conducted numerous field and laboratory investigations to isolate parameters which contribute to the effectiveness of both conventional and resin bolting systems. Specially developed strain-gamed resin bolts, compression pads and differential sag stations installed during the mining cycle have generated data reflecting the loading characteristics and resulting roof stability associated with each type of support. Additional investigations have produced optimum installation parameters of the two systems including the effectiveness of thrust/torque controls for conventional bolts and various bolt/ hole diameter combinations for fully grouted rods. Theoretical analyses, coupled with the actual field and laboratory findings and numerous installation observations have facilitated basic comparisons of the working mechanisms and failure modes of both resin and conventional systems.

BART Facilities Standards (BFS) Structural Criteria is a living document that governs planning, design, and construction of all BART projects. Since its development, the document undergoes incremental changes and updates to reflect policy changes, changes in local, State, or national design codes and guidelines, advancements in engineering and technology, or based on the performance of past built infrastructure. In 2020, the BFS-Structural Criteria underwent a comprehensive update and was released with BFS version 3.2. This paper summarizes the updates to the Tunnels and Underground Structures Section of the Structural Criteria, and provides insights to the basis and logic of the requirements.

As will be seen, the initial investigation of the properties of the guanidine functionality in the solvent form for gold recovery lead to some significant metallurgical developments of their own but, the foremost objective was, and remains, the development of a resin for gold recovery. As a part of this development project, Henkel has entered into association with Mintek, South Africa, and this ongoing association has the potential to develop RIP/RIS technology for the gold industry. More details on Henkel's gold recovery technology and Mintek's role in this programme are given in (1). an The application of ion exchange resins to gold recovery is not new and many reviews have been published on the advantages of this process, and on the current state of the art of gold recovery by ion exchange resins. (2)(3)(4) Widespread application of ion exchange resin based processes for gold recovery has, however, not occurred to date. Fleming and Cromberge (5), described some significant pilot plant RIP trials in South Africa and the partial success of these pilot plant trials held out the tantalising possibility of a breakthrough in gold recovery based on RIP technology. Despite this pioneering work, only two really significant applications of RIP technology for gold recovery exist today. These are the Golden Jubilee Plant in the Eastern Transvaal South Africa and the widespread, although in some respects technically backward, use of ion exchange for gold recovery in the former USSR. There are two main reasons for the current scarcity of RIP and RIS plants used for gold recovery. These are: 1. 2. The perceived problems of engineering RIP plants The lack of a resin having suitable chemistry for both gold loading and gold elution The problems of engineering RIP plants have been largely overcome in the last 25 years. Much of the development in RIP plant design took place in the uranium industry during the rapid expansion of that industry in the mid 1970's. In addition, the development of CIP engineering systems has lead to the development of in-pulp solid extractant based metallurgical plant designs which can, with limited modification, be adopted to RIP. The lack of a resin having suitable chemical properties has almost certainly been the main reason for RIP/RIS not being introduced into the gold industry over the past decade. "The Colorado School of Mines has used the Edgar Mine in Idaho Springs as an experimental mine to teach students since 1921. Since the school acquired the former gold, silver, lead and zinc mine, countless students have received hands-on engineering lessons on their way to earning mining engineering degrees. On Dec. 14, the House Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources held a historic field hearing about the future of mining education in the United States in a classroom about 300 m (1,000 ft) inside the Edgar Mine. Representatives Doug Lamborn (R-CO), Rob Bishop (R-UT), Cresent Hardy (R-NV) and Ed Perlmutter (D-CO) were on hand for the first ever congressional hearing held in a mine where they heard testimony supporting the Mining School Enhancement Act, which was introduced to Congress by Hardy and Perlmutter on Oct. 9, 2015. The act, which is part of a larger mining development and reclamation reform package, seeks to address the absence of a viable pipeline necessary to replenish current faculty vacancies in United States Mining Schools. “What better place to hold a hearing to discuss the need for future mining engineering experts,” Subcommittee Chair Lamborn said in his opening statement. “It is a need felt by industry, states, the federal government as well as nonprofits.” The Mining School Enhancement Act would redirect millions of dollars in fees that are being collected from active mining operations to fund the research and educational programs at engineering schools with mining programs. Those fees now are being used in the form of grants awarded by the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMRCA)."

"Construction projects involve a great many risks. The risk that material prices will increase during construction or that the work under construction will be destroyed by fire, storm or some other act of God are just a few examples. In tunneling or other underground projects, one of the most significant risks is that the subsurface conditions encountered during construction will differ from what is expected. Each of these risks must be accounted for, managed and, ultimately, the duty of one party or the other to bear. The primary tool used to allocate the risks among the parties is the construction contract.How construction contracts allocate the risk that subsurface conditions will differ have changed substantially over the past century. Today, construction contracts typically allocate the risk through a series of provisions. The first is the differing site condition or changed condition clause. That clause, when included, typically provides that the owner bears the risk that the subsurface conditions will differ from what is indicated in the contract documents or what is reasonably expected. The second clause is one that provides that the contractor must conduct a reasonable site investigation and bear the risk of any conditions that such an investigation would reveal. The third provision includes disclaimers that are often included in geotechnical data provided by the owner (or the owner’s engineer) to the contractor which attempts to limit the information on which the contractor can rely. Because these risk-allocating devices seem to be somewhat conflicting, a brief discussion of each provides critical insight in understanding how the modern construction contract allocates the risk of differing site conditions.At the start of the 20th century, construction contracts looked substantially different than they do today. For example, one contract for the construction of a public water tunnel in Chicago, IL, drafted around 1895 contained the following clause:The contractor must take the work entirely at his own risk. No extra allowance will be made for quicksand, hardpan or boulders."

Open pit blasting can be a low cost routine or a high cost bottleneck depending on geology, environment and the operator's ability to master site conditions. Because blasting is a repetitive operation, there should be ample opportunity to optimize the process; but ordinarily this optimization is rarely achieved and then only if conditions remain consistent and predictable. Often, however, and particularly with porphyry coppers, hidden differences in rock characteristics nullify the operator's best efforts. At a porphyry copper deposit being mined by Kennecott Copper Corporation, there are all of the following rock types: oxidized and fresh porphyry, altered and silicified limestone, explosion breccia, rhyolite, sandstone, shale and several others. The units can cover large areas or be limited to a few tens of feet in maximum dimension. They are rarely visible on the bench surface and often do not show up in the bench slope. Even though the blastability of these rocks varies substantially, a generally-uniform blasting pattern was formerly used with disappointing results. Secondary blasting was often required and high bottoms occurred frequently; overblasting wasted drilling time, and explosives caused excessive throw. Several possible methods for improving the blast design were considered and a geophysical method was chosen for testing. There had been reports in the journals that seismic methods were being used in Europe as aids for blasting design. A literature search turned up work by Haxby 1/ on use of a refraction seismograph for measuring pit bench rock strength. Using his work as a springboard, equipment was purchased and a program was planned and carried out for developing, evaluating and implementing the seismic method for routine mine use. Quantitative methods are, by now, a standard tool of the mining industry, and are commonly used by Research Departments in their evaluation of production methods and schedules, and their associated costs. Indeed, much sophisticated computer work has been devoted to such evaluation of controllable costs and capital requirements. These data are an important input into the project evaluation formula, which is probably the most important single calculation per formed by a mining company, since the result decides whether a particular project is viable. It is instructive to summarize the broad principles of project evaluation, since they are crucial to the remaining sections of this paper. PROJECT EVALUATION The most widely used method of appraising projects is known as Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) method. Two main variants are used; they are known as the 'not present value' (NPV) approach and the 'internal rate of return' (IRR) approach respectively. The difference between the two is that the former takes the firm's interest rate as given and uses this knowledge to calculate the present value of the project; whereas the latter calculates the highest interest rate the project could tolerate and still just breaks even. The technique is more simply discussed in terms of the first method (NPV).

Asarco has been using computer-aided open-pit mine design since 1966. The in-house developed program package includes drill-hole analysis programs, interpolation routines, and three-dimensional open-pit design programs. The financial analysis step after pit design required that a reasonably accurate schedule be produced so that a good cash flow model could assess the feasibility of a project. The manual method of scheduling was too time-consuming for feasibility work, so a computerized scheduler was required. Since no computerized mine scheduling programs existed, we requested proposals from consulting firms to develop such a program. The selection of a consulting firm, the formulation of the contract and design specifications required about three years to accomplish. The consulting firm, Systems Control Inc. (SCI), of Palo Alto, spent over one year doing the programming and testing alone. The details of the program development were reported in "Computerized Year-by-Year Open-Pit Mine Scheduling," SME-AIME Transactions, December 1974. In June of 1973 the program, which SCI dubbed Optimum Resource Extraction or ORE, was installed. Version 1 of ORE was utilized successfully on three separate properties over a period of two years. During this time it became obvious that some of the original design specifications were restrictive, and certain modifications were required. The ORE program was submitted for modification, and after one year version 2 was operational in May of 1976. The program now consists of approximately 20,000 lines of FORTRAN source statements grouped into 190 subprograms, and runs in a 450K region of Asarco's 370/148 in Cranford, NJ. The Tucson com¬puter (370/115) is tied to the Cranford computer via a 9600 baud leased T.P. line, for running mine scheduling and other large mine planning programs.

The development and scale up of hydrothermal synthesis processes for manufacture of high performance materials is discussed. Traditional hydrometallurgical processes are reviewed, leading into a discussion of process development concerns for manufacture of modern materials. Three case studies are presented, including a piezoelectric ceramic, barium titanate for multiyear capacitors, and high purity chromium metal. Factors for selection of reactor design are presented, as well as results of scale-up studies on the three products.

Lack of visibility from large, open-pit haulage truck cabs has become a serious safety problem. Anaconda conducted a research program to develop a low cost system to alert haulage truck operators to small vehicles present in blind areas. Several systems were developed and tested. As open-pit haulage truck size has increased, so has the size of the blind areas. Mine utility vehicles, pickup trucks, and cars are concealed within these blind areas and become safety hazards. Figure 1 shows the typical blind areas of a 136 t (150-ton) haulage truck. The areas of greatest concern are at the rear center and front right corner of the truck. In these "no visibility" areas many small vehicles have been crushed by large haulage trucks at various mine sites. In most instances, the occupants escaped the vehicle before it was destroyed. But injuries and death have occurred. In most cases, the accidents were attributed to negligence or carelessness by the small vehicle driver. The limited visibility problem still exists, though, and a solution is needed. Initial Solution The usual plane mirror on the driver's side and the convex mirror on the right front of the haulage truck allow only limited rear visibility. The typical, right side convex mirror is generally small and difficult to locate at a glance. This convex mirror also presents an image that distorts distance perception. These mirrors are of¬ten broken and immediate replacement not demanded or made. The US Bureau of Mines, in a contract with M.B. Associates, San Ramon, CA, developed an improved visibility system. It consisted of a larger, left view mirror and unique, blind area viewer. The large 230 x 690 mm (9 x 27 in.) left mirror has a small convex spot mirror near the bottom. The entire unit can be quickly replaced if broken. The large size provides a full view of driver orientation features such as the rear tire and the top of the load bed. The right 300 x 410 mm (12 x 16 in.) mirror has a convex surface and is quite rugged. The 510 mm (20 in.) spherical radius presents the operator with some distance distortion, but objects in its view are easily seen. The "blind area viewer" consists of a modified fresnel lens that allows the driver to "look around the corner." Installation of three of these lenses on the front of each haulage truck is rec¬ommended for adequate blind area coverage. This system significantly increases an operator's field of view and allows viewing of objects within about 3 m (9.8 ft of the truck. Many open-pit mines are nor mounting on smaller vehicles a long whip with a flag and lamp or both. This increases vehicle visibility to haulage truck operators. The whip is permanently attached to the mine vehicle. It can also be magnetically attached to transient vehicles. The whip system. though, is inadequate for visibility in the critical rear and right front blind areas. Alternate Solutions All of these visibility aids as¬sume an attentive driver. In addi¬tion, areas such as the rear blinc, area are not covered. Based on the inadequacy of existing visibility systems, Anaconda made a com mitment to further the truck de¬tection technology. The best ap¬proach was considered to be ar active system. It would notify the haulage truck operator that an en¬croaching vehicle is present. Sev¬eral systems were considered, in¬cluding ultrasonics and elec¬tromagnetics. For the ultrasonic system, com mercial and in-house design were looked at. Designing an( building transducers with the spe cific beam shape to match the haulage truck blind spots re¬quired a major technological breakthrough. False alarms ap¬peared difficult to prevent en¬tirely. They were caused by pass¬ing, trailing, or leading vehicles a., well as nonthreatening objects. Foreword Sir William Halcrow and Partners are responsible for the design of the Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel as Sub-contractor to the Contractor, Osmac, a joint venture formed by the Arab Contractors, Osman Ahmed Osman and Company of Cairo, and Tarmac International of London. Throughout the paper the term "Client" refers to the Employer, the Ministry of Housing and Reconstruction, which latterly became the Ministry of Development and New Communities of the Arab Republic of Egypt. At the time of writing of this paper only a few hundred metres of the tunnel have been driven, but the design is substantially complete. Introduction The Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel, which is at present under construction, will be a two-lane tunnel crossing beneath the Suez Canal approximately 15 km north of the town of Suez at El Shallufa. It will become the first permanent connection across the Canal since 1967 and is visualised by the Egyptian Government as an early step in the development of the Sinai Desert along the eastern bank. The tunnel will carry pipelines for treated water and electric power cables to assist in this development. The tunnel, which will be 1640 m in length, is being driven through hard clay and mudstone using a tunnel shield fitted with hydraulic excavators. The primary lining is being constructed with precast, bolted reinforced concrete segments with an internal diameter of 10.4 m. The road deck structure and the walls of the air supply ducts beneath it are formed with precast, reinforced concrete units erected immediately behind the shield.

INTRODUCTION Denmark is a small country with a population of about 5.5 million in the north of Europe. A substantial part of Denmark consists of islands, and the Danes have been familiar with ferry links between their islands for ages. However, their wish for fixed links has resulted in the con¬struction of bridges between most of Denmark's islands in this century. (Fig. 1) A fixed link across the Store Belt or Great Belt, Denmark's most important waterway bet¬ween the island of Fyn and main island of Sjaelland, on which the capital of Copenhagen is situated, has remained to be constructed hitherto. In 1987, the Danish government decided that the Great Belt should be crossed by a fixed link, incorporating a two-track railway line and four-lane motorway. The Storebaelt Forbindelsen AS, a joint stock company in the sole ownership of the Dan¬ish state, has been established for the purpose of planning, constructing and operating the Great Belt Link. The company will refinance the construction project by charging toll to the motorway users and fees to the state railway. Here it should be mentioned that Denmark and Sweden are about to jointly realize the fixed rail and road link across the Øresund or The Sound between Denmark and Sweden on the basis of the realization model of the Great Belt link. At present, the project is at the com¬petitive tendering or contract awarding stage. In the near future, also the third fixed link of comparable extent, that is the crossing of the Fehmarn Belt between Denmark and Germany, will go into the decisive projecting stage prob¬ably in conformity with the aforementioned pattern. Going back to the Great Belt, it should be noted that this fixed link involves three exten¬sive sections and has been under construction since December 1988.

The mining industry has recognized the importance of engineering controls as a primary means of preventing hearing loss. The noise control treatments most commonly observed on drills and bolters during this study were windshields, sound absorbing material, and hydraulic motor covers. These controls were evaluated on machines at underground metal mines to determine the amount of noise reduction achieved by each control. The results indicate that absorbing material has very little effect on the noise level. The noise reduction attributable to the motor covers was dependent on the material used to create the cover. Properly installed windshields were the most consistent control.

The rocks and minerals of the moon will be included among the raw materials used to construct a lunar base. The lunar regolith, the fragmental material present on the surface of the Moon, is composed mostly of disaggregated rocks and minerals, but also includes glassy fragments fused together by meteorite impacts. The finer fraction (i.e., < lcm) of the regolith, the soil, is probably the most important portion of the regolith for use at a lunar base. For example, soil can be used in bulk as insulation against cosmic rays, for lunar ceramic and abodes, or for growing plants. However, beneficiation of the soil can provide other feedstocks. For example, the soil contains abundant solar-wind implanted elements, as we1 1 as various minerals, particularly oxide phases, which are of potential economic importance. These components of the soil are sources of oxygen and hydrogen for water and rocket fuel, helium for nuclear energy, and metals such as Fe, Ni, Al, Si, and Ti. The uses of the lunar materials only await a fertile imagination.

The processing strategy for the effective separation of bitumen from low grade (< 10 weight percent bitumen) Utah tar sands by a hot water process differs significantly from that used for the processing of high grade (> 10 weight percent bitumen) Utah tar sands. Excellent separations (coefficient of separation = 0.9) can be achieved for high grade Utah tar sands by intense hot water digestion followed by a modified froth flotation step. Such a technique is ineffective for low grade tar sands. In order to change the characteristics of the low grade tar sand an attempt was made to enrich the bitumen content of the feed to greater than 10 weight percent by recycle of bitumen concentrate to the digestion stage. However the quality of the separation was not improved under these circumstances. Similarly feed enrichment by heat treating the low grade feed with recycled concentrate prior to digestion did not improve the separation. More successful separations of low grade Utah tar sands were finally achieved by modification of the viscosity of the low grade bitumen with controlled addition of diluent. These results of the hot water separation tests and variations in the quality of separation are interpreted in terms of the physical properties of the bitumen and the surface bonding forces operative at the bitumen-sand interface.

Windborne dust from alkaline salt flats and mining-related tailings ponds is especially prone to threaten applicable ambient air quality standards. Sodium carbonate crystals, typically present, weather to an exceedingly fine, non-cohesive dust, causing air quality problems for miles downwind. Recently developed specialized polymers react with alkaline dust to form sturdy, wind-resistant crusts with good longevity. An on-going demonstration project at a major trona facility has developed techniques for cost-effective application of these polymers over large areas of soft tailings or sediments in a wide variety of situations. Recently treated areas on the order of 80 acres show effective suppression of dust.

Economic pressures to increase production to profitable levels reduced the Homestake&apos;s gravity recovery and overall recovery to un-acceptable levels. The operation of the Home-stake gravity gold circuit has increased gravity gold recovery to over 50%, improved overall recovery and increased mill availability for increased tonnage. The gravity circuit consists of three gravity gold recovery stages. The Circuit has four (4) duplex jigs, four (4) belt concentrating strakes and four (4) concentrating tables.
