After two disappointing years where most industrial minerals posted decreasing production, 1981 saw an increase in production over 1980, or at least in status quo. Several commodities did, however, post significant gains. For example, bromine posted a 14% increase; fluorspar production dropped 21% in 1980, but gained 24% in 1981; and sulfur production increased. However, perlite was off 13% and manufactured sodium sulfate off 18% in 1981, while natural sodium sulfate production remained almost even with 1980. In fact, many industrial minerals production either remained constant, increased, or decreased only slightly over 1980. Increasing energy costs had their impact on industrial minerals in 1981. Hopefully, the recent downward trend in energy costs, at least gasoline, will financially help some of the more marginal plants. The 1979 shortage of rail cars that did not carry through 1980 also did not carry through in 1981. Rail rates increased 12.8% over-all last year, while average freight rates for industrial minerals increased 15.5%, according to Neil Johnson, consultant. Also, the trucking industry posted a 5-6% decrease in rates due to deregulation. All in all, we in the industrial minerals section seem to be holding our own at least. Stanley J. In early March 2011, a 6.2 m (20.3 ft) diameter Rob-bins Double Shield tunnel boring machine (TBM) crossed the finish line in Sochi, Russia. The machine completed a 4.5-km- (2.8-mile-) long section of tunnel that will ultimately become part of the transportation infrastructure for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. The TBM advanced through difficult ground at aver-age rates of 100 to 120 m/week (330 to 390 ftpw) for contractor OJSC Bamtonnelstroy, a division of the SK Most Company. The section of tunnel will ultimately become a service tunnel for Complex #3 - a section of Sochi?s transportation infrastructure under construction, which includes road and rail tunnels. A second, 10 m (32.8 ft) diameter Robbins Double Shield TBM is currently excavating the parallel 4.6-km- (2.9-mile-) long main railway tunnel using a continuous conveyor system for efficient muck removal. A 13.2 m (43.3 ft) diameter highway tunnel is also under construction. The 6.2 m (20.3 ft) Robbins TBM achieved high rates despite difficult conditions. The tunnels run through mixed ground including massive to completely fractured limestone with clay seams. Some sedimentary rock including sandstone and siltstone is present, along with fault zones consisting of breccias and conglomerates. In May 2010, the machine was stopped after encountering a significant fault zone consisting of broken rock and running soft ground. Field service personnel and crew successfully freed the machine by excavating a bypass tunnel around the TBM, freeing the cutterhead. Following the restart, a combination of continuous probe drilling and ground treatment with cement silicate and foam kept the machine moving forward.

INTRODUCTION In most uranium mines the concentration of uranium in the ore is low enough that inhalation of dust does not present a radiological problem. Conversely in the mills there is a potential inhalation hazard from inhaled uranium in concentrated form, namely "yellowcake" and other compounds intermediate between the ore and the final product of the mill. It was generally assumed that the solubility of yellowcake placed it in the category of Class D materials. This plus the fact that the uranium is non-enriched led health physicists to assume that the potential health hazards were a result of the uranium's chemical properties rather than its radiological properties. Bioassay programs have thus been limited to routine urine sampling at a weekly or monthly frequency. In most cases when a high reading was obtained, subsequent sampling within one or two days showed a rapid return to low levels, therefore tending to confirm the class D nature of the material. Two developments over the last few years have however suggested that modifications to this simple bioassay program may be necessary and practical. Firstly, a number of studies on the solubility of uranium mill products, from ore to yellow cake, in simulated lung fluid (Eidson A.F., Mewhinney J.A., 1980) have shown that some of the material is not class D, but class W or even Y. This raised the possibility that, while the urine levels rapidly decreased, indicating rapid excretion of the class D component, the W and Y components remained in the lung. Thus an unsuspected lung burden could have been accumulated. The second development, the ready availability of [in vivo] counting facilities with which to make direct measurements of uranium lung burdens, offered a means of confirming the hypothesis of unsuspected lung burdens. A study was therefore initiated to correlate lung burdens with urinary excretion. METHOD A total of 79 subjects from 3 uranium mills participated in the study. They were brought to the Ottawa laboratories of the Radiation Protection Bureau in groups of 4 or 6, over a period of several months. In Ottawa, [in vivo] thorax measurements were performed, and a urine sample collected. Each subject also brought with him a urine sample that had been collected the previous day. All samples were split, for analysis by both R.P.B. and the mill laboratory. [Concentrations of Uranium Dust] Results obtained by mills A, B and C for concentrations of uranium in air at various locations are given in table 1. Samples taken at mill B were obtained using continuous sampling with a midget impinger over a six hour period. Samples taken at mills A and C were 5-minute gravimetric samples. [Subject Selection] The subjects were selected to represent a wide range of work history in terms of both length of employment and type and location of job, as shown in table 2.

A longwall coal mine in southwestern Virginia mining the Pocahontas #3 Coal Seam experienced a history of mining-related seismic events. The events were never large enough to cause concern until three major events occurred recording 3.4, 4.3, and 3.4 ML in 2005, 2006, and 2007 respectively. Two of the seismic events generated an air blast which damaged stoppings which fueled a mine fire in 2005 and 2007. The mine responded to the events by narrowing the longwall widths, changing ventilation controls, installing a 7-sensor seismic system around the active panel, and creating a mining hazard map to avoid similar geology in the future. All of the actions taken have prevented seismic activity from impacting mining operations, but it did not prevent other large seismic events from occurring (Van Dyke et al., 2018). In 2016, another large seismic event, measured at 3.7 ML, occurred in the gob that was reported by the local media and recorded by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). While the event did not directly impact mining operations, mine management wanted to know where and under what conditions could large seismic events occur in the future. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) became involved to help understand what conditions precipitated these events so that future mine design could more accurately assess seismic hazards and reduce the risk to mine worker safety. Researchers at NIOSH and mine management created a seismic forecasting map that combined three factors: (1) overburden thickness, (2) sandstone thickness, and (3) the expected caving height of the gob. The criteria were developed based on the geologic data the mine collected from core drilling, e-log analysis, and fiberscope observations. The forecast map was able to provide an accuracy of 72%–85% of events 1.5 ML or greater and 100% accuracy of events that were 3.0 ML or greater based on historical data. The seismic forecasting map was applied to the entire future mining area to show areas where seismic potential could be the greatest based on current mine design planning, ultimately improving the ability of the mine operator to assess the seismic hazards surrounding active and future mining areas (Van Dyke et al. 2018). Following this research, the seismic forecasting map was implemented into the mine’s hazard recognition program and is continuously updated and evaluated prior to mining each longwall panel. This paper will cover in more detail how the seismic and lithologic data was processed and how the mine implemented a new seismic mitigation program based on the forecasting results.

The reclamation of surface land areas disturbed during the course of coal recovery became a major, universal consideration upon the implementation of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977. This legislation not only established reclamation as an absolute requirement, but also presented guidelines for reclamation standards and required bond-posting procedures to assure completion of the reclamation process. The Office of Surface Mining was established to enforce the provisions of the Congressional mandate by promulgating specifically detailed regulations and supervising the State participation in this regulatory process. The major operational consequences of the reclamation-related provisions of the Act and the OSM regulations are the increased costs and complex procedures necessary to accommodate the regulatory authorities. It is anticipated that many of these costs and procedures have not been adequately evaluated by either the coal operators or the regulatory bodies. It is, therefore, necessary to proceed with an examination of the general reclamation processes, the effect of these processes on product costs, and the methods, if any, which may be utilized to minimize their impact on the overall operation.

The PMott MacDonaldlane Train Tunnel West Extension (PTTWE) Project at HartsfieldJackson Atlanta International Airport includes the extension of the existing automated people mover system and terminal renovations at the baggage claim station. To assist with design, pricing, and assessment of risk on this progressive design-build project, 3D design models were prepared to increase visibility into realities of construction. This paper will focus on the original intent of the models and explore the additional, unforeseen value they provided throughout the design and construction process.

It is a great pleasure for me to speak-before such a prestigious group as the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers. The substance of my talk today is the handling of coal and petroleum coke: their characteristics and environmental problems, and how we were able to correct the problems, prescribe the cure and enjoy the benefits. When coke first became a by-product derived from the oil refineries everyone would have been very happy if someone had offered to take this pro- duct off their hands. Unfortunately, there was no market at that time, and no one seemed interested. Soon thereafter, it became a sellable product and began to be shipped to many countries in the world. This was when all of the pollution problems began. I will be talking briefly about some of these problems and showing a short film on this subject afterwards.

A metallurgical complex to recover gold from highly refractory arsenical ore was recently commissioned by Sao Bento Mineraco. The plant, with a nominal capacity of 20 000 tonnes per month, is situated in the Minas Gerais province of Brazil. The process consists of run-of-mine milling, flotation, pressure oxidation of the concentrate, carbon-in-leach, elution and electrowinning, and effluent disposal. The paper provides an account of the investigations that resulted in the decision to install the pressure oxidation circuit, process and engineering design and plant start up. A comparison is made between the results achieved during the first two years of production and the design parameters.

The Williams Mine mines and mills 6000 t/d (6600 stp’d) of gold ore using SAG/ball milling, leaching and CIP, electrowinning and refining. Electrowinning, high-pressure cathode washing, filtering, retorting and refining are based around the use of knitted stainless steel mesh cathodes. Their primary advantage over conventional steel wool cathodes is that electrowon gold can be washed off and the cathode can then be reused. Typically, the knitted cathodes have a useful life of up to 15 months. Gold production of up to15 t/month (50,000 oz/month) is easily processed with this system. Presented is a description of this operation, including a review of the equipment and performance data.

The pandemic emergency is forcing transit agencies to define strategies allowing social distancing, which are more challenging in underground interchange stations in crowded downtown cores. Toronto Transit Commission’s (TTC’s) Bloor-Yonge Station Capacity Improvement Project in Toronto was approved to meet increasing demand and represents an opportunity to fight COVID-19. This paper discusses cost-effective solutions in expanding the cut-and-cover station box over the existing Toronto Subway Line 2 and connecting it through ventilation openings in the cast-iron tunnel liner. Potential uplift risks and structural damage due to minimal vertical clearance were analyzed via three-dimensional finite element analyses with advanced constitutive laws to simulate the multi-stage construction process. Based on the simulation results, a series of countermeasures, including excavation support systems, king posts, ground-consolidations, and liner reinforcements were integrated into comprehensive design options to ensure the serviceability and structural integrity of the subway tunnels.

Centromin is a Mining Company owned by the peruvian government. It's considered as one of the major mining and metallurgical center in Latin America. The main operations of the Company are: Mining, Concentration, Smelting and Refining of several metals (Figure 1). At present, dentromin operates with six mining units: Cerro de Pasco, Morococha, Casapalca, San Cristobal, Yauricocha and Cobriza; which are located in the Central part of the country between 2 100 m and up to 4 800 m above sea level. The installed capacity of concentration all together ranges about 14 000 tons per day. There's also a metallurgical plant in La Oroya with a production capacity of 220 000 tons per year of refined metal. The production of the Company is diversified in twenty two (22) final pro- ducts, whose major productions are : copper, lead, zinc, silver, gold, tungg ten and bismuth. The minor products are: arsenic, antimony, cadmiun, teluriun, sulphuric acid, indium, selenium, etc.

Reviewing the development of resin-in-pulp (RIP) technology for the extraction of gold in the world, especially in South Africa and USSR, and the chemistry of interaction between aurocyanide ions and anion-exchange resins. RIP benchtest and pilot plant investigations show that the resin of the weak-base and strong-base can absorb gold in the cyanide pulp and gold can be eluted from the strong-base resin by electro-elution. The possibility of future application of RIP technology in China fa also briefly discussed.

Sixty years ago, underground coal mining was the most hazardous job in the United States. Roof falls killed about 100 miners every year, more than all other causes put together. Fast forward half a century to 2016, and the first year ever with zero roof fall fatalities. Just three miners were killed by roof falls during the following six years. To understand how this historic goal was achieved, this study analyzed hundreds of roof fall fatality reports covering five decades. It found that the immediate effect of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (Coal Act) was to reduce the riskiest activities, like needlessly going under unsupported roof. Other hazards, like large roof falls, required technological developments before they were brought under control. Roof control plans, which the U.S. Bureau of Mines had been advocating since the 1920s, fostered the necessary improvements in both the safety culture and the mining technology.

Selective adsorption and surface modification of minerals by surfactants is the primary step in the process of separating certain minerals with similar physical and chemical characteristics in the flotation process. In this study, microorgan- isms are used as surface modifiers for francolite and dolomite. Results of adsorption experiments with francolite and dolomite show that the microbes selectively adsorb to one of the minerals under specific operating conditions. In preliminary flotation experiments, it is found that the microorganisms enhance or depress flotation of the minerals leading to an increase in the efficiency of separation between the francolite and dolomite. The conditions leading to selective adsorption (surface modification) and subsequently to possible efficient separation of these two minerals are discussed in this paper.

In the paper presented by F.W. Brackebusch on the "Basics of paste backfill systems," paste fill was presented as a backfill process that offers many advantages over other alternatives such as hydraulic fill and rock fill. It was observed, however, that the mechanics of paste-fill transportation in pipelines is not fully understood and that the success of its implementation in practice depends on the precise control of the proportions of fines, aggregates and water in the mixture. The author emphasized the necessity for laboratory and full-scale testing to determine the suitability of a material to be used as paste fill. Although experimental testing is definitely an important operation in the design of a reliable paste fill, advances in the understanding of the fundamental laws that govern paste flow in pipelines are equally relevant. Ideally, the results of such efforts would provide predictive models for the rheology of the paste and the corresponding pumping-energy requirements. In an attempt to achieve this objective, an ongoing research program has been active at McGill University's Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering. Preliminary results showed that the underlying mechanics of paste-fill flow in pipelines may be described in terms of what is known as "plug flow," as depicted in Fig. 1. Although this flow mechanism has been known qualitatively for many years, few attempts managed to offer a comprehensive model (Gandhi, 1987; Duckworth, 1986). In our model, it is assumed that coarse aggregates present in the mixture form a porous core, which is filled with paste (fines and water) and is surrounded by an annular non-Newtonian (Bingham-plastic) lubrication layer, which enables the mixture to flow with pressure losses that are easily overcome by common positive-displacement pumps. In summary, our model predicts the thickness of the annular lubricating layer, which controls the magnitude of the pressure losses. This is done either by collecting data on the apparent viscosity of the Theologically-active fine fraction and using an analytical equation (Bouzaiene, 1994), or is done by measuring the void content of the coarse aggregates and deducing the thickness as a function of the fine- to coarse (weight or volume) fraction ratio in the mixture for a given pipe diameter and solids concentration. Our model predictions showed good agreement with data from Duckworth et al. (1986), as shown in Fig. 2.? Rail access to Ontario International Airport (ONT) has long been a goal of San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) to increase public transit options to ONT and provide incoming ONT passengers improved access to San Bernardino County and the greater Southern California region. This paper describes the planning for the Design-Build-Operate-Maintain (DBOM) delivery of an emerging technology tunnel connection between the Rancho Cucamonga Metrolink station and ONT. The paper discusses key technical considerations, challenges, and opportunities; conceptual configuration development; and construction planning and establishment of the footprint for the underground connection.

The flotation behavior of a -28 mesh Pittsburgh No. 8 coal sample is investigated through the use of Scanning Electron Microscopy in conjunction with Image Analysis. Release analysis is used to generate the flotation products, which are then characterized to provide the particulate composition in terms of pyrite, mineral matter and carbonaceous material. The results of this investigation indicate that the material recovered in the first stage of release analysis tends to be well-liberated carbonaceous material. This is followed by an increase in the recovery of middlings and fines in the later stages of the process. Any free carbonaceous material remaining in the tailings from the release analysis test tends to be associated with the very fine sizes (-400 mesh). Pyrite recovery is attributed to the hydrophobicity provided by small inclusions of carbonaceous material, since the amount of truly liberated pyrite particles (i.e., 100% pyrite) present in the sample is found to be negligible.

Gypsum is the crystalline chemical compound CaS04?2H20. A close chemical relation - and frequently occurring with Gypsum ? is Anhydrite which is Cask. Gypsun has wide commercial use because relatively simple heat processing reduces it to Plaster of Paris. While Anhydrite can be converted to Gypsum and thence to Plaster of Paris, the procedure is not simple and is quite costly. Anhydrite, however does have use in the agricultural field and in the Portland Cement industry. Occurrence of Gypsum in the earth structure is usually near or at the surface. Most underground mining is at 60 to 100 feet although one mine in southwest Virginia reaches a depth of 1300 feet. Gypsum is one of our softest minerals, rating only 2.0 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Specific gravity is 2.3 to 2.4. It is soluble in water but only slightly so. Interestingly, it is more soluble in cold water than in hot. For example, one part Gypsum dissolves in 370 parts water at 106° Fahrenheit while at 212°F. the water requirement is 452 parts. Compressive strength of massive Gypsum runs about 3000 lbs. per square inch. Color ranges from grey and brownish-grey to white.

INTRODUCTION With the world media full of predictions that the price of gold will quadruple in three years (Maybury, R.J., 1988), and with financial forecasters and strategists touting opportunities to make 400% in gold (Skousen, M., 1988), explorationists and entrepreneurs are scurrying to find enough gold to feed the global gold fever created. At the same time, gold deposits in the United States and other developed and intermediate countries are becoming less attractive because of environmental restrictions, radical reductions in tax incentives, and depleting reserves, causing people in the mining industry to begin looking at opportunities for foreign investment in gold mining concessions in lesser developed countries (LDCs). Meanwhile, LDCs are responding with chamber-of-commerce aplomb in marketing their opportunities. In the face of all this frenzy and hype, targeting gold mining concessions in LDCs for foreign investment may be done more objectively by employing a systematic approach. For this paper the SHOP rating system (Corbin, R.K., 1987), which considers factors of the LDC's stability, hospitability, ore occurrence, and profitability potential is used. The result is that a tiny banana-growing republic in Central America, first discovered by Columbus and named the "Rich Coast'' because of the many gold adornments worn by its Indians, has been rediscovered and emerges as a classic LDC gold target.
