The consumption of grinding media forms a significant part of the operating cost of a mineral processing plant. An estimated half billion pounds of steel in the USA and over one billion pounds in the world are consumed each year in wet grinding alone. However, there is some conjecture as to the interacting roles of abrasion and corrosion. In order to provide a more complete picture of the conjoint action of abrasion and corrosion, marked ball tests were conducted on different grinding ball compositions in a laboratory ball mill and the metal losses were measured on varying the conditions, i.e., pH, PO2, in wet grinding a Cu-Ni gabbroic rock and compared with taconite grinding. Ball wear rates ere discussed with respect to ball composition and microstructure and the varying conditions used in the grinding tests.

Under normal circumstances, methane released along a longwall face represents only 10%-20% of the total me- thane emitted from the entire longwall panel. However, there might be a sudden surge of methane at the face which may cause a potential problem because the friction from shearer cutting, support movement, and scraper conveyor dragging can be ready ignition sources. Therefore, to predict the distribution of methane will be critical to prevent possible explosions. In this paper, methane dispersion patterns along a lognwall face are simulated under normal and abnormal conditions. With the simulation of methane released from the face, around shearer drum, and from the broken coal on the conveyor, places with possible high methane content can be identified by different phases of working process and shearer positions. Local ventilation measures are evaluated so precautionary measures can be planned ahead.

The 2014 George A. Fox Conference at the Graduate Center, City University of New York in New York City was presented under the theme, ?21st Century Challenges for the Tunneling Industry. Bruce Grewcock, chief executive officer and president of Peter Kiewit Sons? Inc., opened the conference with a keynote address in which he set the tone for the rest of the day by touching on the many challenges the industry is facing, which are plentiful and complex. Covering the breadth of the industry, he spoke about everything from the technical challenges that come from working beneath the streets of some of the most densely populated regions in the world to the challenges that come from working with the people who live in those areas. ?My observation is that we, as an industry, are being asked to put structures in places where they are needed, but are complex environments to work in,? said Grewcock. ?We work in an industry that relies on some of the most technically challenging engineering in the world, and when we are done with a project, we cover it up and no one ever sees it.? Despite these issues, Grewcock said that, in his opinion, the biggest challenge the industry is facing is that of people; more precisely, where to find the next batch of people. Looking out at the conference-record crowd of more than 400 registered attendees, Grewcock quipped that he saw plenty of gray beards and asked aloud, ?Where will we find, educate and train the people to tackle the issues that this industry will face in the future??

However, for each of these; education, training, technique, and experience are necessary for a long, continuous, successful relationship. Success, no matter how obtained, is easier to defend than almost success, regardless of the education or the degree of refinement of the seeker. Similarly, investment dollars are more readily available to a successful, uneducated and unscientific practitioner than to his beginning or unlucky professional counterpart.

"INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES The operational safety of long and very long rail tunnels represents a key issue in all development stages, including design, construction, commissioning and operation. The spectrum of potential threats is very broad and challenging. These issues can only be mastered by means of a proper combination of a number of safety measures at various levels. This paper focuses on the specific safety issues and the extremely challenging conditions characterizing very long and deep tunnels. They include a significantly increased risk during operation that the incident train cannot exit the tunnel by its own means, long self-rescue and rescue distances, the presence of a number of trains, possibly mixed traffic as well as significant thermal issues. Amberg Engineering is strongly involved in the design and construction of most long and very long rail tunnels in Europe, including in particular the Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT), Lyon-Turin Base Tunnel (LTF) and the Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT). The combined experience arising from these tunnels forms an invaluable body of expertise, which is summarized in this paper. The focus is on shared issues with practical relevant examples and project-specific solutions. Special attention will be devoted to the 57 km long Gotthard Base Tunnel, which will be operational by mid-2016 and will be the longest infrastructure tunnel worldwide. VERY LONG TUNNELS IN EUROPE Overview From the point of view of safety, tunnels in excess of about 20 km exhibit a significantly increased risk that incident trains could stop within the tunnel. This is related to the European Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI) on rolling stock, to be discussed in the chapter on rescue stations. This paper will specifically focus on the following longest tunnels in construction or operation, listed in Table 1."

The role of microorganisms in the leaching of metal sulfides is well established (Torma, 1977; Murr, 1980). However, this established knowledge applies mostly to chemolithotropic microorganisms such as Thiobacillus ferrooxidans which function optimally in leaching catalysis between 25-35° C, and in a pH range of 2-2.5. Although leaching with thermophilic microorganisms capable of extending the range of catalytic viability beyond 35° C is also documented, there are few if any attempts to optimize or extend sulfide concentrate leaching with thermophilic microorganisms. When mixed metal sulfides or other materials having different rest potentials (referenced to the standard hydrogen electrode, SHE, in the electromotive series) make contact in a conducting, aqueous medium, the contacting members will act as an electrochemical cell, with the member having the higher rest potential assuming the role of an electrical cathode. In leaching reactions involving such galvanic couples, the cathode becomes passivated, while the anodic member reacts vigorously due to the electro- chemical reaction which occurs (Hiskey and Wads- worth, 1975). Serry, eta1 (1978) observed that when chalcopyrite and pyrite were in intimate contact in natural ores, the chalcopyrite reacted vigorously by galvanic conversion as a result of the higher rest potential (~ 0.63 V) as compared to the chalcopyrite (~ 0.53 V). In addition, it was postulated that because of the elemental sulfur which can form on the anodic chalcopyrite in this galvanic conversion process, reactions in acid-bacterial medium would be expected to have accelerated copper extraction because of the conversion of any sulfur product layer on the chalcopyrite anode to sulfuric acid according to the following general reactions: [MS?M2+ + S° + 2e- (1) and 2S° + 302 + 2H20 bacteria?-2H2SO 4 (2)] where M in reaction (1) designates the metal (or metals in the specific case of chalcopyrite) to be released to solution by galvanic conversion.

Virtually no two mines operate with the same geographic, geologic, and mining conditions. It follows chat problems vary with the conditions from mine to mine or often from one section to another in the same mine. Actual situations are described, and a technique of "stacking" maps to predict hazards is presented. Two case histories of the use of multiple overlays are de- scribed. The first deals with a property that was examined before the start of mining. The second is a property in which severe ground control problems were encountered and the relationship between the problem areas and known conditions were found to be related.

The problem of the freezing of moist raw materials, such as concentrates, in railroad cars during winter shipment has been a continuing source of both economic and operational trouble to the industry and to the railroad companies. The difficulties center around the discharging of frozen cargoes into the plant materials handling system. Because of cargo freezing, appreciable delays in car-dumping schedules occur each winter and cause additional expense for demurrage charges and for slowdown of plant operations. In one plant during one winter, a car dumper rated at 40 cars per day could dump only 3 cars per day in bad weather. Delays became so serious one winter, that 500 cars held in the yard became so badly frozen, that they were sent to the southern part of the United States to thaw after they accumulated an average of two months demurrage charges. These delays in car unloading become critical if unit or integral train concept is applied to the movement of raw materials. Anticipated savings in transportation costs through better equipment utilization are largely based on rapid loading and unloading cycles of whole trainloads. If freezing problems cannot be adequately solved, unit train operations cannot be operated to achieve the potentially large reductions in transportation costs. The freezing problem may tend to become even greater in the years ahead, because the unit train concept will allow the trains to run faster and consequently the heat loss will be accelerated due to the larger heat transfer coefficient. A compensating factor, however, will be the shorter travel time. Further, the sources of raw materials being mined are located farther north than before and the ambient temperatures during transit are going to be lower.

Capstone Copper’s Pinto Valley Mine faced challenges in recovering rock and ore on final walls because of geotechnical constraints that require restrictions on methods for loading blastholes adjacent to the pit boundaries to preserve wall stability. The operation had been using the same drill and blast designs for years. With changing geology, such as harder rock, as mining progressed, material was being left unmined in final walls because of poor breakage. The amount of unrecovered, unprocessed ore was estimated at approximately 380,000 tons a year generated from an average of 60 final wall blasts performed annually. The engineering team from Capstone and Dyno Nobel engaged to minimize the amount of material left on the final pit walls. This paper presents how we collected data, reviewed design standards, and found opportunities to improve ore recovery from pit final walls without increasing drilling and blasting costs. The results collected from implementing the new design on two benches showed the potential for extra revenue of approximately $3.6 million generated annually from reducing final wall unrecoverable underbreak by nearly 71% on the mine’s highwalls.

INTRODUCTION The Endako deposit was first explored in 1926, but development waited until the early nineteen sixties. It first came under the control of Placer Development in 1963, and early in 1964 a decision to bring it into production was reached. The deposit is located near the geographic center of British Columbia, and is served by an east-west communication system including a paved highway, mainline railway and good telephone, teletype, and computer facilities. The plant area is shown in Figure 1. The operation is known as the Endako Mines Division of Canex Placer Limited of Vancouver. First production was achieved in June, 1965, at a nominal rate of 10,000 tons per day, but it soon was closer to 15,000 tons per day. In 1967, two new grinding and flotation sections brought capacity to the present rate of approximately 27,000 tons per day. With mill heads of around 0.15 percent MoS2, production is about 14,000,000 pounds of molybdenum per year. A flowsheet of the operation is given in Figure 2. A legend for this flowsheet is given in Table 1. Published ore reserves are estimated at 214,500,000 tons at an average grade of 0.143 percent MoS2. Many Latin American countries are facing a scarcity of water. As such, infrastructure decisions are quite different from those made in parts of the world that experience a positive water balance. In the latter case, the water treatment approach tends to be ?treat and discharge.? For Latin American regions facing the challenges that go with a negative water balance, the focus is on resource optimization and reuse. Historically, the water challenge has had a significant impact on economic development in Latin America, especially in sectors such as mining, where water usage is high. At the same time, countries such as Chile and Brazil are major development targets for mining and oil and gas operations. Given the water supply challenge, industry is increasingly turning to technologies and processes that maximize water recovery and reuse. With sulfide precipitation and ion exchange water treatment processes for example, it is possible to treat and recover more than 99 percent of water for reuse onsite. These technologies have been applied successfully in other regions of the world where water conservation practices are essential to economic survival.

Approximately 7 billion tons of soil, rock and ore are currently being excavated in open pit mines and quarries on the North American continent at the present time. As the depth of excavation increases and the grade of ore being mined reduces, the safety and economy of the stability of the pit slopes becomes increasingly important. The magnitude of the potential influence on economics can be appreciated from the results of recent full scale field studies by Kennecott Copper Corporation at the Kimbley pit near Ely Nevada (Merrill, 1968). This pit was originally excavated with an average wall slope of 45°. Based on detailed studies it appeared that a slope of 610 would be stable. Subsequent excavation to this slope proved the original pit could have been steepened by 16° during production.

Pillars are used as the primary support structures for underground mining to maintain stability by supporting the over laying strata. In the case of horizontal seams, the pillars are typically subjected to axial loading due to the weight of the overburden and/or abutment stresses, while in the case of inclined seams they are subjected to oblique loading due to both the vertical and horizontal in-situ stress.

This paper presents the results of an investigation of the application of thermal fragmentation in Australian hard-rock, underground, narrow-vein mining. Two geologically similar samples from an underground, narrow-vein, hard-rock gold mine were collected to obtain a measure of the technology’s ability to recover ore by the creation of large thermal openings to assess the applicability of the thermal method.

The identification of the major subsidence areas in the Western Kentucky Coal Field has been made to distinguish the subsidence phenomena on the basis of geographical location Further, this identification process is based upon selected critical geological, topographical, and mining features in the coal fields. The proposed identification of the regions is derived from a comparison of the subsidence potential in a particular area. The most likely severe subsidence areas are compared to those with the probable low subsidence severity. The combination of certain geological and mining parameters involved allows for the derivation of a classification of the subsidence potential. It is recommended that further site specific studies should be performed on this area.

Recently, the North American mining industry experienced a severe recession, forcing managers to take dramatic steps to cut costs and compete in the difficult international market. Some of these steps were closing mines, reducing work forces, renegotiating wage agreements, and purchasing the most productive equipment. Managers are now looking beyond these traditional avenues and are focusing more on advanced technology. In the present environment, it is essential that mine operators obtain the maximum use of capital expended on equipment. However, mine workers do not obtain maximum efficiency or productivity from equipment because the adverse and hazardous mine environment impedes human performance. Also, the efficient use of large, complex machines calls for levels of precision that many times are beyond the capability of even highly trained miners. A possible solution to this problem is a machine that mines without operators - autonomous mining machines. However, numerous problems confront researchers who are attempting to develop such equipment. Some mining tasks are not always composed of a series of cyclic motions readily performed by factory floor robots. In addition, mining takes place in the geological environment where conditions are highly variable and unpredictable. As a result, these machines must be able to sense and adapt to variations in operating tasks and environment. Considerable autonomous vehicle research has been completed, especially for defense. However, autonomous vehicle (AV) technology has not advanced to practical application yet (King, 1988) and mining research is necessary in areas: representing mining specific knowledge; •analyzing and reasoning about sensor data in the mining environment; and •discovering completely new mining methods or new approaches to existing methods that become apparent when we remove the constraints imposed by the necessity of human operators. A specific machine, the LHD, can be used to show the problems for researchers who are attempting to develop autonomous machines for mining. This author chose the LHD because it can borrow concepts developed for autonomous navigation by military programs. But considerable mining research is also required. Furthermore, studies done at the Henderson mine, in Colorado, show autonomous LHD 's promise cost and safety benefits (King, 1988). At Henderson, LHDs load ore from draw points, tram to an ore pass, dump and return, or switch to another draw point. An autonomous LHD must sense vehicle position along the route, relate sensor data to stored-map information, to determine location, follow drift center lines, plan paths between dump position and initiate appropriate control commands, sense vehicle operating status and vehicle health, key on features or targets for special tasks like high speed turns, perform end of travel tasks (loading and dumping), and detect and avoid obstacles. These goals are similar to those for shuttle cars, trucks, and front-end loaders. Therefore, much of the technology is transferable. Each Henderson LHD extracts six to 40 dippers from each of a series of draw points. The LHD transports the ore to an ore pass within 55 m (180 ft) of the draw point, making the longest round trip 110 m (360 ft). The LHDs have very fast hydraulic dumping and loading systems that reduce the round trip cycle to less than one minute. Even though the LHD is capable of 500 trips per shift, the average production is 300 dippers. Man trip and lunch reduce available operating time to 6.5 hours per shift. Mucking difficulties (setting large boulders aside), operator breaks for activities like talking shop, and cleaning and smoothing roads further reduce operating time. Supervised autonomy can reduce the number of operating units by increasing operating time per shift since computer controlled machines can operate during lunch and between shifts and reduce operator errors. If dippers per shift increase from 300 to 350 (long-range goals are 500 dippers per shift), constant production requires only 10 operating LHDs and two spares. Manpower requirements drop from 24 to four by controlling five machines from one workstation. A review of technology available from the Autonomous Land Vehicle, the Advanced Ground Vehicle Technology, the Ground Surveillance Robot, and other programs, show the following differences between others work and mining industry needs: •If we focus initially on mobile haulage vehicles, we can navigate from a map. We do not need to explore. •We can modify the environment to reduce the navigation requirements. •We have a harsher environment than any of the research programs have encountered. •Our equipment must operate faster and more precisely than present AVs. •Our equipment must operate reliably over long periods of time. •We must have better onboard machine health monitoring and diagnostics. •The AV programs do not address geosensing. •The major AV programs are not cost-effective. For example, we cannot afford the computer power for robust image processing, yet. To computer control an LHD, we must replace the guidance and monitoring skills of experienced operators with sensors, computing hardware, interfaces, and several software mod¬ules. The world-famous Sang Dong Mine in the Republic of Korea has long been one of the world's greatest tungsten ore deposits. Over the years, the development of the Sang Dong deposit has steadily increased to a point where it now exerts a great influence on the world tungsten market. The mine is located in the mountains of the province of Kang Won Do, approximately 150 miles by road due east of Seoul, the capital of the Republic of Korea. In recent years the transportation system in Korea has greatly improved and the mine is now serviced by an excellent secondary type road from the new railroad line which is 20 miles away. The Sang Dong operation is made up of the underground mining, beneficiation mill, chemical refinery, tungsten metal plant, bismuth refinery, acid plant, foundry and machine shops. The bismuthinite production from the Sang Dong Mine is also of considerable importance, The output accounts for nearly 10 per cent of the world production of bismuth. A small amount of molybdenite concentrate is also recovered from the flotation operation.

Since the 1981 record of 54 mm tons of US fertilizer consumption, grain surpluses in the US have brought about massive acreage reduction programs, decreased fertilizer consumption, and resulting price pressures caused by excess capacity. The strong US dollar that reduced export sales of both grain and fertilizer, and new offshore manufacturing capacity using US engineering/contracting know-how have combined to put US producers of phosphate fertilizers in uncompetitive postures. While recent events suggest the industry may be growing out of this capacity problem, the cost of US phosphates will continue to be disadvantaged by such external factors as taxes, environ- mental regulations, and high power costs. There is no reason to expect help from the government in the form of reduced environmental regulation and taxation. In order to survive, phosphate fertilizer producers will have to develop technologies and adopt strategies that result in world competitive production costs. Current responses to the need to reduce costs include reduced energy costs through cogeneration, innovative reclamation techniques that create valuable land, and in- creased raw material recovery achieved by operator proficiency. While new technology offers long-term benefits for the producer, present efforts are concentrated on more mundane management efforts to reduce costs. Major attention is being given to the problems of labor utilization and productivity. Raw materials suppliers are being asked to renegotiate contracts which more appropriately reflect conditions in an industry operating at about 50% of capacity. Achievements in these and other areas will allow the producers to continue operating until longer term benefits materialize. `

Heap leaching has become one of the prime technologies used for the recovery of precious metals from low-grade ores over the past ten years. The recovery process involves mining and stacking the ore on engineered leach pads, with or without crushing and/or agglomeration, followed by leaching with a low concentration sodium cyanide solution. The metal-bearing, pregnant solution is then processed by zinc precipitation or activated carbon absorption to extract the precious metals. The leaching process continues until all economic metal values are removed at which time the spent heap leach pads, the leached materials and excess process solutions require decommissioning. The management of these solutions may present a potential challenge for successful and environmentally sound decommissioning due to their composition, volume or continuity of generation from the spent ore even though active leaching has been terminated. The principal objectives of solution management in decommissioning spent heap leach pads are to meet all operative environmental regulations in a cost-effective manner and to leave the pads in a condition where they do not present a long-term liability either to the operator or to the environment. This involves the reduction in volume of the residual process solutions and/or treatment of these solutions to where they meet applicable water quality criteria. In the past, the environmental and economic aspects of decommissioning and solution management have been overlooked or under-estimated during the planning of mining operations. As a result, there is a potential for long-term liabilities and costs to be recognized only at the end of active leaching, a time at which operating revenues and cash-flow are minimal. Therefore, the decommissioning process requires addressing at the mine planning stage and agencies now require that a plan for solution management after the cessation of operations be submitted prior to initiation of mining. This paper discusses aspects of process solution management during decommissioning, both in terms of quantity and quality, and how potential issues may be recognized and planned for in the initial stages of heap leach design.

Currently, there are several methodologies to assess ground vibrations from blasting. Of all available methodologies, one that is becoming more important is the waveform superposition or signature hole technique. This technique is based on a signature waveform assigned to each hole to build the complete waveform for the whole production blast, using the convolution between the time initiation sequence and the signature hole waveform. In the basic methodology of the signature hole technique, the waveform hole-to-hole is assumed to be the same. Several studies and field tests have proven that the waveform hole-to-hole, even in ideal rock mass conditions (rock mass with little or no joint system), changes. In addition to distance or confinement, other factors that could change the waveform hole-to-hole include different geologic paths from the source to the monitoring point and a different energy output of each hole, due to hole loading, explosive composition and/or contamination, priming, etc. These factors result in varying waveforms generated for each hole, making the waveform produced by each hole a somewhat random process. There is available in the literature some proposals to include variability in the waveform hole-to-hole, but the parameters involved are complex and difficult to estimate. In this paper, the variability in the signature waveform hole-to-hole in a blast event was recorded through a field test, and a proposal to include signature waveform variability to develop an equation based on the Fourier series is presented. This methodology is the basis for a future signature hole analysis using a Monte Carlo scheme, taking into account the variation of the amplitude and the frequency content of the waveform hole-to-hole in a production blast event.
