Abstract The consumption of barytes in certain paints polyurethane foams, seamless, flooring, glass, brake linings, plastisol caskets for food containers and in fluids used for gastrointestinal X-ray examinations rely on tie unique properties of barium sulfate, There are no readily available mineral substitutes. Barytes are also the essential raw material for the manufacture of industrially important barium chemicals. High quality barite ore has become scarce throughout the world. Processing ore into quality end products is both capital and energy intensive. These factors have tended to limit availability and increase prices which have encouraged the use of alternates and restricted market growth.

The measurement principle of the Coulter Counter for particle size analyses is described. The application of the Coulter Counter to cement particle content and size analysis and to the size distribution of clinker from standard grindability tests are described. Methods of calibration, sample preparation and data reduction are presented. The results of the analyses obtained are compared with characteristics associated with performance showing both concordance and non-concordance of test data., Future uses of the Coulter Counter for particle size analysis in research and plant control adaptations are indicated.

Digital camera and computer technologies can be used to monitor mine slopes and provide real-time warning of rock falls. NIOSH researchers assembled a surveillance system using low-cost video cameras and computer software from the security industry to test its effectiveness. The system is designed to signal an alarm when motion is detected and to record images of the scene. Masking can restrict motion detection to specific areas within the camera view; sensitivity is adjustable. The time-stamped images provide a record that can help reconstruct and quantify an event. Video motion detection can augment standard monitoring methods to increase safety in surface mines.

"The electrokinetic and flotation behaviors of ilmenite using lead ions as the activator and sodium oleate as the collector were studied. The results of microflotation show that the flotability of ilmenite can be improved by lead ions obviously. The isoelectric point of ilmenite increases from 5.32 to 7.7 after the addition of lead ions because of the adsorption of Pb2+ and Pb(OH)+. The results of zeta potential measurements and the collector adsorption density calculation show that the adsorption of sodium oleate on the ilmenite surface via chemisorptions in addition to electrostatic interactions. Besides, the adsorption density calculation results show that as the addition of lead ions as the activator, the adsorption amounts of collector are greater than those without activation which is in aggrement with the flotation behaviors. INTRODUCTION Ilmenite, as an oxide mineral of formula FeTiO3, is usually used as the main resource of the extraction of titanium (Bulatovic and Wyslouzil, 1999). There are many researches showing that the conventional methods, such as gravity separation, magnetic separation and flotation, do not work efficiently as expected (Mehdilo et al., 2015; Zhu et al., 2011). Nowadays, to produce ilmenite concentration feasibly and efficiently, these separation methods above are combined for a reason that the raw ilmenite ores are characteristic of poor, fine and complicated. Moreover, surface modification, such as surface dissolution method, microwave irradiation and oxidation roasting, is applied to improve the flotability of ilmenite currently (Welham and Llewellyn, 1998; Zhang and Ostrovski, 2002). Generally, fatty acid salts are used as the collector for the flotation of oxide minerals and sodium oleate is usually used as the collector for the flotation of imenite ores (Fuerstenau and Pradip, 2005). The mechanism, such as individual ion electrostatic adsorption, chemical adsorption, ion–molecule dimeric complex adsorption, and the coadsorption of ion and molecule, have not been discussed systematically using sodium oleate as the collector in the flotation of ilmenite (Somasundaran, 1983). Under the activation circumstance using the lead ion as the activator and sodium oleate as the collector, the interaction mechanism seems to be still unclear. In the present study, the interaction mechanism between ilmenite and sodium oleate using lead ion as the activator are studied by microflotation, zeta potential measurements and adsorption density calculation. EXPERIMENTAL Materials and reagents Pure ilmenite minerals were obtained from Panzhihua, Sichuan province, China. The minerals were ground in a porcelain mill with an agate ball. Following that, the prosucts were sieved, and the samples of -0.074+0.038 mm size fraction were used for the microflotation experiments. The results of XRF show that the content of titanium element is 30.58%, showing that the purity of ilmenite is above 90%. On the basis of the results of XRF, it is determined that the purity of ilmenite is very high and meets the needs of microflotation"

For most geologists and miners the term "asbestos" refers to a group of highly fibrous silicate minerals that readily separate into long, thin, strong fibers of sufficient flexibility to be woven, are heat resistant and chemically inert, and possess a high electric insulation and therefore are suitable for? uses where incombustible, nonconductive or chemically resistant material is required. The United States Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) specifically refers to the naturally occurring minerals chrysotile. amosite, crocidolite, termolite asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, and actinolite asbestos as "asbestos" if the individual crystal fragments have the following dimensions; length -greater than 5 micrometers, maximum diameter -less than 5 micrometers, and a length to diameter ratio of 3 or greater. Since asbestos has been identified as one of the ten most carcinogenic substances (a cancer causing agent) it has become, for many government regulatory agencies, a major issue concerning banning emissions to the environment.

When dry, powdery materials and liquid materials are being conveyed, there are enclosed transport methods such as flow, case, air-slider and pipe line. In addition to features of the belt conveyor, a system employing a pipe line to transport dry powdery and liquid materials has always been considered an ideal method. The demand or consumption of fluorspar has been somewhat taken for granted in recent years, except for the specific interest of those that produce, market, and/or consume the commodity. A tradition was established of thinking that as the steel and aluminum industry goes, so goes fluorspar. This is much less true today than in the past. The industry is becoming more dependent on chemical industries that feed primarily off hydrofluoric acid (HF) production. The Bureau of Mines recently published an assessment of world fluorspar reserves and resources that created a foundation of valuable data that can be used to monitor fluorspar availability. Celebrations were held this year commemorating the 100th anniversary of the isolation of fluorine. The United States and other countries continue to struggle with the controversy of ozone depletion and the effect of fluorocarbons on the atmosphere. The goals for the U.S. Government's strategic stockpile are being reevaluated. The market for fluorine chemicals is changing and diversifying, making it a challenge to assess and forecast fluorspar/fluorine demand. This paper reviews the recent past of fluorspar and helps set the stage for a more detailed assessment of this critical commodity.

In tunnel condition assessment, the trend is towards comprehensive 3D measurement combined with high quality image texture to document and quantify damages to the tunnel surface and to create a cohesive data base of the structural conditions throughout its lifespan. The faster such measurements can be made on site, the less it impacts traffic conditions of the highly sophisticated subway systems. The Dibit high-speed 3D scanning system which is based on Photogrammetry and LiDAR technology enables data acquisition in tunnels at a speed of up to 60 mph. Given the high rate of speed the system can operate, tunnel shutdowns can be drastically reduced, and tunnel safety increased. The photorealistic texturing of the 3D-model allows the identification and analysis of smallest material damage (e.g., cracks ≥0.3 mm wide). The publication illustrates technical details and 3D results of the innovative system from measurements that were performed in the subway tunnels of the Bay Area Rapid Transit System in San Francisco, CA (total length 66.23 km).

INTRODUCTION The authors, by means of this paper, will attempt to show the role of Induced Polarization and Resistivity surveys in the discovery of the orebodies of Gibraltar Mines Limited (N.P.L.). In this paper, we will also attempt to show the importance of conducting large enough surveys in order to properly evaluate the results obtained from these surveys. LOCATION The orebodies of Gibraltar Mines Limited (N.P.L.) are located on the western slope of Granite Mountain, central British Columbia (52°30' north, 122°16' west) (See Fig. 1). The property lies approximately 28 miles north of Williams Lake, B.C. and can be reached by way of 10 miles of newly improved road from McLeese Lake, on the Cariboo Highway. The area in and around Gibraltar Mines has a moderate topographic relief with elevations between 3,500 and 4,100 feet. {EARLY HISTORY AND GEOLOGY The present Gibraltar Mines property before amalgamation consisted of the Pollyanna property (Duval-Canex) and the Gibraltar property (original Gibraltar Mines) as well as some Coast Silver and McLeese Lake Copper claims (See Fig. 2). The Pollyanna property was first described in the 1917 B.C. Minister of Mines Report which referred to it as the "Rainbow Group". The development at that time consisted of several open-cuts on copper bearing quartz veins.

When a large area of open gob collapses suddenly, a windblast is produced that can cause considerable damage throughout the infrastructure of a mine. In a few cases, the windblast has been accompanied by ignitions of methane and/or coal dust. This paper describes the conduct and results of laboratory tests involving the compression of mixtures of air, methane and coal dust under a falling weight and while allowing controlled escape of the mixture. The transient responses on pressure and temperature sensors were recorded. In addition to an analysis of those records, the paper highlights those conditions in which ignitions occurred.

INTRODUCTION "Most people would probably agree that some degree of government control and regulation is essential in modern society, and it will likely continue as an important part of our social organization for the foreseeable future. But most of us tend to be ambivalent about it. In one situation or another we are likely to see government commitment to social benefit programs or regulatory devices either as an expanding encroachment on the freedom of the individual or as an undue interference with private enterprise or with the rules of the market place. But even where there is agreement as to the desirability of government initiatives, either in general or in a particular context, it by no means follows that there will be approval of the mechanisms or procedures used or the means of carrying them out." The above statement is taken from a 1980 Working Paper of the Law Reform Commission of Canada prepared in connection with its study of the exercise of administrative law in Canada and the practices and procedures of administrative tribunals. The Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB) is one such administrative tribunal, and as the federal nuclear regulatory authority, it is responsible for licensing the production, possession and use of nuclear materials, equipment and facilities and enforcing compliance with licence conditions governing the health, safety, security and environmental aspects of the activities involved. Although the AECB was established 35 years ago with the passage in August 1946 of the Atomic Energy Control Act, like many administrative tribunals its role and functions and the regulatory process which it applies have evolved significantly during this period. The changes which have taken place over the years reflect not only the vast scientific and technological developments which have occurred but also the marked differences between contemporary society and the social milieu of the mid-1940s. However, the basic philosophy of nuclear regulation in Canada and the underlying principles of the regulatory process have changed very little. Certainly, the process is far more open in terms of the general public, it has become appreciably more comprehensive and systematic in terms of the depth and extent of both the pre- and post-licensing technical evaluations which are conducted and the ensuing compliance program. Furthermore, it now applies to the whole of the nuclear fuel cycle as well as the industrial, agricultural and medical applications of radionuclides. Nevertheless the following fundamental principles remain unchanged: a. primary responsibility for achieving high standards of nuclear safety and environmental protection in the design, construction, commissioning and operation of nuclear facilities resides with the licensee; b. the credibility of the nuclear regulatory process depends not only upon its technical correctness and practicability, but also upon acceptance by the public-at-large of its perceived effectiveness and efficiency; c. regulatory criteria and principles should be concise, clearly stated and understandable; d. regulatory decision-making should be based upon stated criteria and principles taking into account pertinent scientific and technical facts only; e. fairness and impartiality must characterize all regulatory decision-making; f. the regulatory process should be subject to a comprehensive periodic review and evaluation to ensure that it continues to produce the desired results at justified costs. EXPLANATORY NOTES The mere statement of a set of principles is a relatively simple task. Far more difficult is the explanation of what these principles mean in practical terms. To stipulate that a licensee bears the primary responsibility for achieving and maintaining high standards of nuclear safety and environmental protection may be regarded by some as an attempt by the regulatory agency to evade the responsibilities assigned to it. However, this is not the case. It is unrealistic for anyone to claim that a licensee only complies with accepted norms of public and occupational health and safety and of environmental protection because of the fear of prosecution. INTRODUCTION The Harrison Western Corporation, a leading Denver based mine contracting and engineering concern, is presently engaged in sinking two 1,006 m (3,300 ft) shafts for the Phillips Uranium Corporation at their Nose Rock Project, approximately 13 miles northeast of the small community of Crownpoint in McKinley County, New Mexico. The Nose Rock Project is the first attempt by the Phillips Uranium Corporation to tap the deep uranium reserves in what has become known as the Grants Mineral Belt. (See Figure 1) Project Description Phillips Uranium Corporation's plan for the large 2700 metric ton per day (2950 tons/day) mining facility calls for a series of deep access and ventilation shafts ranging from 4.27 m (14 ft) to 5.49 m (18 ft) in diameter to approximate depths of 1,006 m (3,300 ft). The initial pair of shafts consists of one production shaft and one ventilation shaft separated by a distance of 91 m (300 ft). The interbedded layers of sedimentary sandstones and shales to be penetrated by the shafts contain several major water producing aquifers, the deepest being the mineralized zone called the Westwater Canyon Member of the Morrison Formation.

Many factors, some of which are not easily defined or described, must be considered in the design of a hydraulic backfill system. After participating in the design of several plants, I have a conviction that future refinements in sandfill systems must come in large part, from the merging of good design ideas and information from existing operating plants. It is important then, that we document and publish information on existing plant designs and their operating characteristics. This information will then be available for use by our successors and later innovators in hydraulic fill placement. The Mayflower hydraulic sandfill system is similar to other plants. The intent of this paper is to describe only this system's unique design and operating characteristics. I will not describe in any detail, the familiar elements of the system. I will document some of the observed hydraulic characteristics of the system, elaborate on some of the design situations that had to be solved, and will discuss operating factors that are not generally described in our technical literature.

High-pressure grinding rolls subject the feed material to pressures of 200 N/mm? During this process considerable size reduction and the Formation of flakes occur. This paper describes the basic consideration For design and operating of this type of mill. It is also shown that the particle size distribution resulting from this process is typical for grinding processes but untypical for crushing processes. High pressure grinding rolls are designed in size of up to 2.8 m roll diameter allowing feed material top sizes of 250 mm. The rigid frame, bearing and drive - train design allows a broad application of the high-pressure grinding rolls operating the machine in open or semi-closed and closed circuit for dry and moist feed materials. Operating results show that capacity increases of up to 100 % can be accomplished with this technology. The high-pressure grinding roll also, allows for lower operating and maintenance costs due to energy savings of up to 20 L and reduction of wear to less than 1 76 for dry and less than 0.1 5 for wet grinding. Other advantages of the high-pressure grinding rolls are smaller equipment sizes than a ball or SAG-mill for a given capacity resulting in lower building sizes with reduced capital in- vestment costs.

The long hole open stoping (LHOS) method is widely used in underground mining. While methods to predict stable stope geometries are well established, the ability to maintain a stable back often assumes effective ground support across the full stope span. The efficacy of the support strategy is dependent on rock jointing, quality, density, top cut width and height, and the type, amount, and orientations of bolts installed. However, it is becoming increasingly common for operators to assume narrow top cuts in service of wider stope spans with minimal bolting coverage. Failure to account for the required top cut drift size and support requirements can ultimately lead to raveling type instabilities along stope shoulders that result in back collapse. A new method has been developed to evaluate the minimum top cut dimension necessary to accommodate wider stope spans with various rock bolting configurations. Due to the economic impacts of top cut development and support, this is a critical consideration in the accurate costing and scheduling of a LHOS operation. Tables 1 lists the acronyms are used throughout this paper.

If it was all so clear I would not have been "asked" to write this article. For those of us on the contractors’ side of the fence, joint venture business relationships have been a part of life for a long time. But even for contractors, there can be a bit of confusion, and it normally begins on bid day.How often have you received bid results and wondered (out loud, usually), "Who the hell are the Lake Mead Intake Constructors"? or the "Regional Connector Constructors"? Once you get past the name, you see that there is nothing behind Oz’s curtain other than a couple of contractors bidding and building work in an attempt to make a profit. So take a few minutes to read the rest of this, and I’ll do my best to dispel a few mythWhat is a joint venture?In some form or fashion, joint ventures are as old as industry itself. In the United States, some of the earliest (and largest) joint ventures involved the railroads and oil companies in the late 1800s. In the United States’ underground construction industry, joint venture names such as, Healy-Greenfield, Green and Winston, Gates & Fox and Walsh, Shea-Ball, Kenny-Paschen and S&M-Traylor bring back memories of successful joint ventures that operated over many projects.There are nearly as many definitions for joint ventures (JVs) as there are attorneys. A short and simple definition is, "an association of two or more companies engaged in a singular, for-profit business enterprise without actual partnership or incorporation." That’s it. Two or more contractors decide to partner up for one or more projects. One benefit of the JV relationship is that the partners typically do not need to file incorporation documents, or articles of organization within the state where they intend to operate. So it is a relatively easy business arrangement to pull together. Other benefits of the JV arrangement include: • Oportunities to gain new expertise and capacity.• The ability for firms to move into new geographic markets.• JV agreements are not long-term commitments.• Sharing of financial support for a project.• Sharing of financial risks within a project. between the partners.• Can complicate dispute resolutions with the owner and between partners"

Paraphrasing the poetic repetition of Gertrude Stein - "Research is research, is research, is research --- ad infinitum." But research takes many forms and involves many facets. Perhaps the most simple of definitions is that attributed to the late "Boss" Kettering of General Motors who in advising a young trainee said, "Research is an intelligent effort to satisfy the curiosity of the human mind." Reclamation research is complex and requires a diversity of scientific knowledge. The overall aim of land reclamation research is directed to finding practical ways to develop efficient methods to restore mined lands to productive use, compatible with use of adjacent lands, as soon after mining as possible; and, finding practical ways to reduce or prevent damage to surrounding resource areas, which may be affected by the mining process. Research in the field of mined land reclamation is not entirely new, although in some respects we are exploring new areas each day.

Dimension stone on the other hand has been utilized by man to glorify conquests - both in the battlefield and corporate arena. Both commodities are important, but dimension stone has an additional use in that the survival lessons learned by the domestic industry can be applied to other contemporary industrial minerals, Specialization in the market place and customer service have allowed domestic producers to survive: subsidized foreign competition, obsolete equipment, and lack of capital.
