Glass sands fall into that extremely select category of mineral deposits that requires a fantastic degree of natural concentration (95% +) of a single component before they can even be considered as ores suitable for further refinement. The combination of geological factors that has produced such an environment of "mineralogical single-mindedness" has appeared only rarely. Factors that require consideration in the economic evaluation of a potential glass-sand deposit can be grouped into three categories: 1) geological (e.g., size, shape, structure); 2) petrographic (e.g., grain size, accessory minerals, nature of iron contaminants); 3) geographic - political (e.g., proximity to consumer, size of market, zoning restrictions). Of particular con ern is the nature of the iron contamination. Iron-bearing species appear as 1) accessory mineral grains, either detrital or authigenic, 2) cements, 3) grain coatings, and 4) quartz-grain inclusions. Selection of the cheapest form of beneficiation requires precise information on the mineralogy of the iron species and their detailed petrography. Because of the antipathetic relationships, in many parts of the United States and Canada between the geographical locations of glass plants and the geological distribution of glass sands, the selection of ac suitable source for a particular glass plant may be dichotomous. One may seek either an exceedingly pure "classic" type glass sand that is relatively distant and whose cost includes a major transportation charge or a relatively proximate and somewhat "impure" source whose cost includes a substantial fee for beneficiation.

"INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES Long rail tunnels require in most cases powerful mechanical ventilations. Besides requirements related to normal operation and maintenance, operational safety always requires a high level of smoke management. Identifying the optimum ventilation concept is essential for achieving proper performance and safety while keeping investment and operational cost at a reasonable level. For the purpose of the present paper, long tunnels have a length of typically 20 km or more. This is related to the European classification of trains (TSI 1303/2014), where the maximum distance from the portals to a firefighting point and between firefighting points is limited to 20 km (only category B passenger rolling stock allowed) or 5 km (general case). From TSI 1303/2014 it can be concluded, that tunnels over 20 km require in any case emergency stations with complex mechanical ventilations. Based on the experience arising from a number of recent projects in the European area, including in particular Gotthard (GBT), Lötschberg, Lyon-Tourin (LTF), Brenner (BBT) and Gibraltar, safety-relevant issues related to the ventilation of long railways tunnels are reviewed in this paper. Amberg Engineering is directly involved in these challenging design tasks and can provide first-hand experience and know-how. As a particular highlight, special attention is devoted to the longest tunnel worldwide, the 57 km long Gotthard Base Tunnel, which will be commissioned in 2016. THE GOTTHARD BASE TUNNEL Overview The Gotthard Base Tunnel will be commissioned in 2016 (official inauguration on the 1st of June and beginning of regular operation on the 11th of December) and will be the worldwide longest tunnel. Its complex and powerful ventilation system is very representative for many other long tunnels and is used as reference in this paper. Therefore, a few key characteristics of the Gotthard Base Tunnel and its ventilation system will be described in some detail in this initial chapter. The Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) consists of two single-track tunnel tubes with connecting galleries every 312 meters. Two so-called multi-functional stations (MFS), located at roughly 1/3 and 2/3 of the tunnel length, host the key equipment for normal and for emergency operation. At these locations, double crossovers allow trains to switch from one tunnel tube to the other. An emergency station is located in each multifunctional station, allowing trains to stop in case of emergency. The general layout of the GBT is presented in Figure 1."

Tunnel segmental lining design constitutes a significant iterative process where modeling and numerical analysis are factors in deciding the number of segments, their dimensions, gasket placements, as well as the locations of dowels and bolts. Consequently, these modifications lead to revisions in the final drawing details. However, the current tunnel engineering practices lack systematic solutions that effectively bridge the gap between the iterative design process and efficient visualization of completed drawings due to the time- consuming nature of redrawing. This paper presents a pioneering application of AI-driven solutions including using Autodesk's API, for the Northside Interceptor Tunnel (NSIT) Project. It showcases the automation of drawing design and the real-time visualization of modifications, thereby streamlining the drawing process.

The Mina Santa Rosa mine in Panama was the victim of a mine closure 24 years ago that left the community in dire straits. The mine showed the potential resources of greater than 1M ounces of gold and 4.5M ounces of silver. Veragold Mining Company decided to reopen the mine and address all the issues that were involved in the startup of an historic mine. This paper provides methods to restore the community trust, provide a transparent process, and develop an environmentally sound flowsheet. Immense scrutiny surrounded the Tailings Storage Facility, and the company developed a plan focused on paste thickening and surface stacking to eliminate the need for a conventional tailings’ facility. Paste thickener principles and benefits are also provided.

One of the key operations in any milling circuit is grinding. Over the last two decades, large diameter Semi-Autogenous Grinding (SAG) mills have become the preferred primary grinding mills. The drive systems became more complex as the size of the mills became larger, during which time operating and design experience for SAG mill accumulated. Considerable reliance is now placed in power electronics to provide flexibility in SAG mill operation to meet the demands of lower operating costs. Whereas earlier most SAG mills were designed to operate at fixed speeds, present day SAG mills can operate at a fixed speed or variable speed through the use of an AC synchronous motor or DC motor. However, this flexibility comes with an increase in capital and operating costs. Since the capital and operating costs of a project directly affect the project's rate of return, the selection of a SAG mill and its drive system should depend, in part, on the impact that the extra cost makes on the project. This impact can be measured by performing an economic analysis based on Net Present Cost (NPC) calculations. Although the NPC calculation is an important factor in the grinding mill selection, other factors such as reliability of mill drives and power source are important elements in the decision making process. This paper examines how the NPC calculation, plus reliability and power source, influence SAG mill selection.

"Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR), a satellite-based remote sensing technique, has application for monitoring subsidence with high resolution over short periods. DInSAR uses radar images to measure centimeter-level surface displacements. In the images, ground resolution can be relatively high, with each data point (pixel) representing the average displacement over an area of several square meters. The image data are acquired regularly which allows subsidence to be monitored sequentially over short periods; imaging periods typically range from weeks to months.Monitoring subsidence over short periods with high spatial resolution has potential to provide insight into the dynamics of subsidence and into relationships between mine advance and subsidence. In this study, for three longwall mines in the western United States, initial subsidence occurring at the start of longwall advance is quantified over short periods (12 to 72 days). C-band interferometric wide swath Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images from the Sentinel satellites are used to quantify the subsidence. Overall, the data show initial development of subsidence, expansion of the subsidence trough, and the advance of subsidence in the direction of mining.INTRODUCTIONApplied Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR)Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR) is a satellite-based remote sensing technique that can be used to quantify small displacements of the Earth’s surface. Using data from the Seasat satellite, which was launched in 1978 (Jet Propulsion Laboratory, 2018), studies by Goldstein, Zebker, and Werner (1988) and by Gabriel, Goldstein, and Zebker (1989) applied Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) interferometry to topographic mapping and displacement monitoring. These studies established the potential for broader applications of radar interferometry. Studies by Foxall, Sweeney, and Walter (1998), Wright and Stow (1999), and Carnec and Delacourt (2000) represent some of the earliest evaluations of DInSAR for mine subsidence monitoring. All three of the studies demonstrated the application of DInSAR for quantifying mine subsidence. They also demonstrated difficulty accurately measuring subsidence over long periods due to data decorrelation. DInSAR continues to be evaluated as a tool to quantify surface deformation related to active and historic mining. For example, see Vervoort and Declercq (2018), Wempen and McCarter (2017a), Chen et al. (2013), and Liu et al. (2013). Technologies associated with SAR interferometry continue to develop. Recently launched satellites have relatively high spatial and temporal resolutions, and data processing methods and data accessibility are improving."

"Fatigue presents several challenges for the mining industry. Depending on the specific occupation, daily work or operational setup on any given mine site, mining jobs can have a fair amount of labor-intensive tasks mixed with monotonous and repetitive duties. Combined with the long working hours and shift-work schedules of mining work, the prevalence of fatigue in mine workers may seem rather unsurprising.Mining is certainly not alone in facing the challenge of addressing worker fatigue. Indeed, many of the characteristics above mirror the similarities of fatigue in other industries, such as health care, aviation and security. To the extent that fatigue in mining acts like fatigue in any other industry, then any fatigue management applications, trainings, or interventions in existence can be borrowed from other industries and applied to mining in a cookie-cutter approach. However, some have argued that mining in particular is especially susceptible to increases in the prevalence of fatigue beyond the characteristics listed above due to the multifaceted combination of factors in mining environments associated with fatigue: dim lighting; limited visual acuity; hot temperatures; loud noise; highly repetitive, sustained, and monotonous tasks; shiftwork; long work hours; long commute times due to mine site remoteness; early morning awakenings; and generally poor sleep habits (Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, 2012; Legault, 2011). Legault (2011) in particular argues that it is the combination of these factors simultaneously that can make mineworkers particularly susceptible to sleep deprivation and fatigue in comparison to other industries where these factors are often not present all together. If fatigue looks and acts different in mining, as others have argued, more research is needed to determine if, how, and why worker fatigue might need to be managed differently in mining.While the burden of fatigue on the mining population has not yet been evaluated thoroughly, methods and measures of fatigue management remain a popular point of discussion. Many commercial suppliers and consultancy groups have begun to develop technologically based fatigue monitoring systems (McMillian, 2013). Some technologies can monitor vehicle operators for indicators of wakefulness, such as percent eyelid"

The leaching kinetic of mechanically activated sphalerite with acid FeCl3 solution was investigated. The result has shown that mechanical pre-treatment has greatly enhanced the leaching process. Comparing with the original concentrate, the activated one can be leached more completely at relatively lower temperature with diluter FeCl3 concentration within a shorter leaching time. The activation energy for the activated concentrate is 27 KJ/mol, while for the original one is 52 KJ/mol.

During the past several years, more frequent reference to Wollastonite has appeared in print, both in this country and abroad. The reason for this is the apparent growing interest in this mineral as it approaches commercial maturity. Twelve years ago, wollastonite was available in only limited commercial quantity. In 1933, a deposit in California was worked for a short time to provide a calcium silicate raw .material for the manufacture of mineral wool* It was not until the spring of 1953 that Cabot Corporation put into operation a modem commercial plant to produce this material in a variety of grades. These grades covered both a range of particle size and of particle shape. At that time, applications for wollastonite were largely speculative, although a few commercial applications in glass frits and welding fluxes did exist, For all practical purposes, it was a new material for which few commercial uses had been fully proven.

The world's biomass with its species-specific ability to concentrate metallic elements must provide one of the dominant concentration and transport systems for such elements. Given that about thirty elements are now considered bio-essential, for all these biomass may control their environmental behavior. Life appears to be present in almost all places where liquid water is present at temperatures near 100°C or below. In the surface environment a very large array of simple minerals are produced in living cells and such processes can lead to economic concentrations. Because of the specific nature of bioconcentration of elements, in all environments where biomaterials accumulate, interesting metal concentrations may occur or the molecular fragments from bio-degradation may allow specific metal transport and concentration. The scale of biological-inorganic interactions on our planetary surface is still inadequately appreciated.

Adsorption of sodium dodecylsulfonate (SDS) and dodecylaminium hydrochloride (DAH) on Buller seam coal, New Zealand, have been studied. Both surfactants adsorb effectively on the coal below pH 8, and the adsorption isotherms established at pH 4 are essentially the same at lower concentrations. These findings suggest that the adsorption of these two ionic surfactants on coal is controlled by a hydrophobic bonding mechanism. However, the results of calorimetric studies suggest that coulombic attraction also plays a part in the adsorption mechanisms. It has also been found that both the SDS and DAH adsorbed in the first monolayer are not removed by lowering the surfactant concentrations in the bulk solution.

In deep strip mines the job of moving overburden may be so much bigger, and more costly than the removal of coal or ore that the operation is often called dirt mining. Constant improvement in stripping machines and techniques of using them is needed to offset rising costs and to increase production in mines that are now operating, and to make it economically possible to work deeper or thinner deposits.

A 1 t/d continuous elution pilot plan is being operated by General Mining at their Grootvlei Gold Mine using the technology developed at the Anglo American Research Laboratories. Flowsheet design and plant erection was carried out by Van Eck & Lurie and completed in December 1989. Following the conclusion of six test runs designed to optimise reagent additions, it was shown that elution efficiencies of 98-99% could be achieved using reagent additions as· low as 16 kg/ton of carbon NaCN and 28 kg/ton NaOH while consistently producing eluted carbon containing less than 50 g/t gold. Significant savings were indicated when compared and power were indicated when com­pared with the traditional batch AARL, Zadra and Micron alcohol elution procedures.

INTRODUCTION Radon-222 is an inert, radioactive gas formed by the radioactive decay of radium-226, a long-lived member of the uranium-238 decay chain. Radium is present in varying amounts in virtually all soils and, on the average, about 36,000 pCi (1330 Bq) of radon per square meter of soil diffuse into the atmosphere each day (UN 1977). Radon decays with a half-life of 3.6 days through four short-lived daughters to lead210 and it is these short-lived daughters[ [Ra A, (218Po, t, = 3.0 min) , Ra B, (214 Pb, t;, = 27 min), Ra C, (214Bi, t] = 20 min) and Ra C1 (214Po, t] = 2.5 x 10-6 min)] ]which cause the major health hazard associated with radon (Bale 1951). Atoms of these daughters, either unattached or attached to the ever-present particles in air, are deposited on the surfaces of the respiratory tract; alpha particles emitted in their decay can result in large doses to the cells of the bronchial epithelium lining the respiratory tract. These daughters will be present in air in varying relative concentrations depending on the "age" of the air (time since radon emanated into it) and on the amount of mixing of radon and radon daughter contaminated air with clean air. [The practical unit developed to quantify the amount of radon daughters in air is the Working Level (WL). This unit was historically related to the equilibrium concentration of 100 pCi (3.7 Bq) of the short-lived daughters of radon in one liter of air (cf. Holaday 1969) and is defined as any mixture of the short-lived daughters in a liter of air that have a-potential alpha energy of 1.3 x 105 Mev (2.08 x 10-5J) in their decay to lead-210. The working level month (WLM) was developed along with the WL, and was defined as an exposure to one WL for a working month (170 h). This is equivalent to 2.2 x 107 MeV•h•L-1 (3.54 x 10-3 J.h.m-3). If the average breathing rate is taken as 1.2 m3.h•1 (ICRP 1975), then one WLM is equivalent to inhalation of 4.24 mJ of potential alpha energy.] It is now generally agreed that the inhalation of radon daughters is the major potential radiation hazard in uranium mining, and contributes a substantial fraction to the natural radiation exposure of the general population due to the accumulation of radon and radon daughters from natural sources in buildings. Radon daughter concentrations in modern mines are controlled by ventilation, and by blocking off old working areas (cf. Simpson, 1959). However, before the hazard from radon daughters was recognized, considerably higher concentrations of radon daughters were present in some uranium and non-uranium mines. These high radon daughter concentrations resulted in an increase in lung cancers in the mining population, and it is these results that are our main source of information on the risk of inhaling radon daughters. HISTORICAL REVIEW Many excellent reviews of the history of understanding the health effects of inhalation of radon daughters are available (see, for example, Hueper 1942, Lorenz 1944, Sikl 1950, Stewart 1964, Holaday 1969, Lundin 1971, Cross 1979) but a brief summary of some of the highlights in this area may be of interest. [a] 1556: Agricola describes an unusual and fatal chest disease occurring among underground miners in the region of Schneeberg and Joachimsthal (Jachymov) in the Erz mountains in Central Europe. (It is of some historical interest to note that Agricola's book was translated from Latin into English by a mining engineer and his wife; the engineer later became President of the U.S.A.) [b] 1879: Haerting and Hesse indicated that the majority of deaths among Schneeberg miners were due to lung cancer; the lung cancers in these miners (who were incidentally not cigarette smokers) were observed twenty to fifty years after they began working in the mines. [c] 1896: Discovery of natural radioactivity by Becquerel, followed by discovery of radon by Dorn in 1900. [d] 1924: Ludewig and Lorenser report high concentrations (400 - 15000 pCi or 15 - 570 Bq per liter) of radon in the air in the Schneeberg mines and suggest that radon could be responsible for the high rate of lung cancer among miners. However, the reason why radon should cause lung cancer specifically was still not really understood up to twenty years later (Lorenz 1944). High concentrations of radon in the air in the Joachimsthal mines were reported by Behounek in 1927 and a high incidence of lung cancer among Joachimsthal miners (similar to that among miners at Schneeberg, which is only some 30 km distant but in a different political district) was noted at about the same time (Sikl 1930; cf. Sikl 1950). It is estimated that about half of the Joachimsthal miners died from lung cancer and about half from silicosis and tuberculosis (Sikl 1950). [e] 1930's and 1940's: Radioactive ores are deliberately mined in the U.S.A., Canada and other countries primarily as a source of radium for medical purposes and for luminescent dials; other radioactive ores are mined as a source of several non-radioactive minerals, while extensive uranium mining did not begin until the late 1940's. [f] 1940: Based on crude epidemiology and dose calculations, Evans and Goodman propose 10 pCi L-1 as a maximum permissible concentration of radon in continued human exposure. This is the first known recommended maximum permissible concentration for radon. This recommendation was adopted by the U.S. National Bureau of Standards in 1941 and reconfirmed in 1953. It would be most difficult to place a date on the beginning of the revolution in analytical techniques that we have witnessed in recent years; but there is no question that the period since the end of World War II has seen a major change in thinking with respect to control and accounting analyses. For reasons relating to competition, much of this change was brought about in the chemical industries and only more recently has begun to affect directly the mineral industries. In considering the subject outlined in the title of this paper, one might well be tempted to discuss solely the more exotic methods of control and automation which have come into being in the past short while. In this paper, however, an attempt will be made to take a broader view and consider not only the application of newer purely physical methods of control but also those phases of chemical plus physical analyses that have bearing on our industry.

The world has seen unprecedented economic changes in recent years, starting with the stock market collapse of 2008 and the great recession that followed. With these changes, the mining industry, like others, has been forced to find ways to adapt to the shifting and sometimes volatile conditions. It has been a bumpy ride that has not been easy. Prices for most commodities have been in a decline in the past several quarters ? albeit still well above the average prices of 10 years ago ? as the costs of production have been on a steady incline for the past 10 years. Adding to the concern was the report in April that China, which had grown at an average pace of 10 percent/year, for the past decade, slowed to less than 8 percent gross domestic product (GDP) growth this year, catching many off guard. Even gold, once the safe haven for investors during rocky times, stumbled in April of this year, losing 7 percent of its value in two days. So what?s an investor to do ? and how can companies still attract financing? For the first time in 10 years, SME, in conjunction with the New York Local Section of SME, attempted to clear the waters of the mining finance sector with a conference focused on ?Current Trends in Mining Finance.? Held at City University of New York, Graduate Center, April 29-30, the two-day conference attracted 148 attendees and was intended for senior executives and mining industry specialists, covering a range of important topics and trends through 17 panels with about 50 speakers. The presentations came from representatives from some of the most influential companies in the mining and financial sectors, including Citi, Nomura, Societe Generale, Caterpillar, Newmont Mining Corp., Ernst & Young, Export Development Canada (EDC), KPMG, HSBC, Tocqueville Asset Management, BNP Paribas, Revett Minerals, Royal Gold, Environ and ERM.

Natural ochres, umbers, hematites, and magnetites were once used in their crude or semi-processed state for their pigment value in construction products and low-end coatings applications, while yielding, in recent years, to synthetically produced iron oxides for more sophisticated products. Today, through innovative mining, processing, and marketing techniques, natural iron oxide pigments are once again gaining strong inroads into products and markets requiring precise chemical and physical characteristics. With our focus on environmental consciousness and resource conservation, value added natural iron oxides provide an economical and responsible alternative to our color needs.

The concept of mobile crushers is not new. Since their introduction about twenty-five years ago, mobile crushers have continued to gain widespread attention. Mobile crushers reduce minerals in the open pit mine to sizes which can be transported by belt conveyors thereby reducing or eliminating the need for truck haulage. Truck haulage is costly, often representing as much as 50% of the total mining cost. More than 80% of the cost of truck haulage is for fuel and lubricants, tire replacements, and operators' wages, and it can be anticipated that the cost of these items will continue to increase at a steady pace. Compared to truck haulage, transportation by belt conveyor is more energy-efficient, less labor-intensive, and less subject to inflation. Therefore, mobile crushers, used in conjunction with belt conveyor systems, offer one of the most effective available methods of reducing energy consumption and mining costs,

The current economic downturn has been at the center of media attention for several years. Today, the mining and mineral sectors are being impacted by highly fluctuating supply-and-demand conditions, extreme price volatility and tremendous market uncertainty on a world-wide basis. There have been numerous plant closings, project cancellations and employee layoffs. In this gloomy economic environment, it is easy to forget that the world?s gross domestic product (GDP) has more than doubled in real terms during the last 30 years. While current market turbulence may continue for some time, the long-term trend is unmistakably upward. Living standards are rising all over the world, thereby creating demand for food, clothing, transportation and housing. This translates into tremendous demand for the mining and mineral sectors. In the future, new capacity and plant expansions will be necessary to meet this need. These investments, which typically have a life span of 30-plus years, will have to be based on long-term economic considerations rather than current market conditions.

The traditional approach to safety clearance monitoring and proper PPE usage in underground mines is time-consuming, costly, and susceptible to negligence. However, automated real-time monitoring can be implemented using computer vision-based approaches. This study aims to develop a system that provides timely information based on the automatic detection of proper PPE use and safety clearance in underground mines. Deep learning and a decentralized computing structure between the cloud and sensing devices (fog technology) are used. We hypothesize that a camera-based system can provide near real-time assessment of proper PPE use and verified clearance to access restricted areas in underground mines.
