"R.E. Janes Gravel Co. is an aggregates producer is located along a paleo-channel of the Ogallala formation (locally known as the Slaton Channel) approximately 48.3 km (30 miles) southeast of Lubbock, TX. In an attempt to beneficiate the 25.4-mm (1-in.) concrete aggregate product, a log washer was installed in the processing line to liberate and remove fines (clay) from the finished product. The introduction of this extra cleaning step increased fines in the finished product, exacerbating the original problem. Several other processing options were investigated before a geological analysis was undertaken to try and define the lithology of the formation and formation characteristics in an attempt to alleviate this problem.Initial assessmentsThe mined resources are mid-Miocene to early Pliocene (16-4 mya) in age and is the eastern exposure of the Ogallala formation of the Southern High Plains escarpment. The Ogallala formation consists of coarse-grained alluvial sediments in paleovalley channel ways from the Rocky Mountains with fine Aeolian and paleosol deposition on the uplands across the High Plains region of the United States. Locally, these Rocky Mountain sediments from New Mexico were transported and deposited in a paleochannel that is approximately 0.805 km (0.5 miles) wide and 15.25 to 18.3 m (50 to 60 ft) in depth. As this channel cut across the Southern High Plains it eroded local rock sources of Late Cretaceous limestones and Triassic sandstones and mudstones incorporating them into the younger Ogallala depositional sequence.Depositional historyThe channel currently being mined is a nontypical Ogallala deposit. The Ogallala in the panhandle of Texas is divided into two units, the Couch and the Bridwell. The Couch is the older of the two and exhibits alluvial sedimentation of thicker and larger gravel (up to 76.2 mm or 3 in.) deposits fining upward to Aeolian sedimentation and thick friable caliche deposits. The Bridwell overlies the Couch and is characterized by alluvial sedimentation, a distinctive red tint and smaller gravel components (typically no larger than 25.4 mm or 1 in.) fining upward to Aeolian sedimentation and thick, well-indurated caliche cap. The Slaton Channel divides these two units and shares lithologic components of both, yet is lithologically distinct due to its Cretaceous Age limestone gravels that can be < 3.66 m (12 ft) in size. Caliche/calcrete is a calcareous (CaCO3) deposit that forms in the B horizon of soils as a rain water leachate of CaCO3 from the upper A horizon."

In August, 1977, the Federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act was signed into law [I]. It stated that: "The Congress finds and declares that because of the diversity in terrain ... and other physical conditions in areas subject to min ing operations, the primary governmental res- ponsibility for developing, authorizing, issuing, and enforcing regulations for-surface mining and reclamation operations subject to the Act should rest with the States." Section 516 of Title V (Control of the Environ mental Impacts of Surface Coal Mining) of the Act deals with the surface effects of underground coal mining operations. "Each permit issued under any approved State or Federal program pursuant to this Act and relating to underground coal mining shall re quire tfieoperator to adopt izeasures consist ent with known technology in order to prevent subsidence, causing material damage, to the extent technologically and economically feasible, maximize mine stability, and main tain the value and reasonable foreseeable use of such surface lands, except in those instances vhere the mining technology used requires planned subsidence in a predictable and controlled manner: Provided, that nothing in this subsection shall be construed to prohibit the standard method of room and pillar mining. "

INTRODUCTION The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority is responsible for the planned 166 kilometer (103 mile) Metro rapid rail transit system in Washington, D.C. Some 117 kilometers (72.8 miles) of this system is in operation and contains 30.6 route-kilometers (19 miles) of rock tunneling. To complete the planned system an additional 1.6 kilometers (1.0 miles) of single track tunnels in rock are planned and additional contracts will consist of 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) of twin tunnel, resulting in 8 additional linear kilometers (5 miles) of single track tunnel contracts yet to be offered in soft ground. Three recent contracts in soft ground included the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), along with conventional tunneling, as a bid option. Section E5a, Fort Totten Station and Tunnels, was the only one of the three to be constructed using the NATM option. This is the first application of the New Austrian Tunneling Method in soft ground in the United States. This paper will concentrate on the Fort Totten Station chamber NATM design, construction, and the instrumentation readings and evaluations which lead to an engineering back analysis which allowed a refinement of the bid design, resulting in a faster, more efficient construction. Design of the Fort Totten Station and Lines was done by Sheladia Associates. The design team included Greiner Engineering and Jenny Engineering with Mayreder-Consult of Austria, who was responsible for NATM design and NATM construction consultation.

The Chinese city of Shanghai is one of the fastest growing in the world. To keep up with the growth, two tunnels, three-lanes each, are being built beneath the Yangtze River to connect Shanghai with the Changxing River Island. To complete such a large project, Herrenknecht Tunneling Systems was brought in to construct the largest tunnel boring machine (TBM) in the world. The first Herrenknecht S-317 Mixshield has a diameter of 15.43 m (50.62 ft). It was built to construct one of the two 7.2-km (4.5-mile) tunnels. The tunnels are part of the Changjiang Under River Tunnel Project and will be at depths of up to 65 m (213 ft) beneath the Yangtze River in Shanghai-Pudong. These two tunnels are to be opened to traffic in April 2010, in time for Shanghai to host the World Expo. More than 20 million people live in the Shanghai area. The area itself has been growing at an extremely rapid pace for more than a decade and is in need of more space. The search extended beyond the natural limits of the Yangtze River Delta. As part of its incredible growth, 500 new vehicles are registered every day. The new tunnels will connect the Changxing River Island, with a population of approximately 600,000 people to the road traffic network. A bridge construction will also provide a traffic link between Changxing Island and the large island of Chongming.

The ldaho Cobalt Belt represents a unique geologic environment containing some of the largest known reserves of cobalt in the United States. Stratabound cobalt-copper-gold deposits formed within a sedimentary basin that was generated by the rifting of an Archean cratonic block. Host rocks for these deposits are the Early to Middle Proterozoic Yellowjacket Formation comprising a suite of clastic sediments, volcaniclastics, and mafic tuffs that accumulated in the intracratonic rift basin about 1.7 b.y. ago. Rifting was probably initiated during a regional heating and doming event that may date back to 1.8 b.y. ago. During this time, other rift basins were likely to have formed in the region. They probably represent the precursors of a much larger depositional environment having characteristics of an Atlantic- type or passive continental margin where younger formations of the Belt Supergroup were deposited. The Yellowjacket Formation has been subdivided in the Idaho Cobalt Belt into three genetic units representing various subenvironments of a deepwater clastic fan complex. A northwest- trending deep-basin structural trough accumulated fine-grained muddy sediments that were periodically interrupted by distal turbidites of the subaqueous fans. Subsequent progradation caused the deposition of coarser-grained clastics of the more proximal portions of the fan complexes. Submarine fan lobes were built across northwest-trending tectonically active basin growth faults. These in-basin structures caused a great deal of penecontemporaneous deformation within the Yellowjacket sequence. Northeast-trending fault zones formed an orthogonal set of fractures that controlled the shape and size of sub-basins, and were also an influence on lateral migration of dominantly fine-grained clastic material. The eruption of mafic tuffs at about 1.7 b.y. ago added a new component to the Yellowjacket sedimentary sequence. Around the Blackbird mine area these tuffs commonly occur either near the base or within some of the sandier sequences. Since most of the sand influxes were largely controlled by basinal tectonism, the tuffs were probably erupted during tectonically active periods of basin development. The dynamic nature of the sedimentary environment probably caused much of the tuffaceous component to be mixed with other clastics and even resedimented as volcaniclastic material. In time, the change to a higher energy sedimentation regime resulted in such a dramatic clastic dilution of the tuffs that they could not survive in the areas of the vents, and, if present, they must have been distributed elsewhere in the basin.

Reclamation of surface mined lands has two basic objectives: (1) the elimination or abatement of undesirable environmental conditions, and (2) the restoration of mined land to its former or more productive uses. This paper addresses some of the planning concepts and site factors that influence the selection of suitable land uses for surface mined lands. Three planning concepts included in the discussion are: (1) mine land planning, (2) comprehensive land use planning, and (3) environmental site planning. The site factors that will influence the selection of an appropriate land use have been grouped into three categories: (1) legal, (2) geographic, and (3) natural. The natural factors are further subdivided into three groupings: geomorphology, soils, and climate.

The rapid decay and disfiguring of stone monuments in urban and desert rural areas has challenged conservators to protect stone surfaces from premature decay. They attempt to halt the natural process of stone decay and possibly to restore the original strength lost mostly by chemical weathering and the loss of binding cement. Ageneral solution is not possible because the physical and chemical characteristics must be considered for different stone types. The failures of stone preservation and restoration are greater in number than the cures. The need for repair of stone decay goes back to evidence of Roman replacement of decaying stone. The presence of excess water in buildings has long been recognized. Moisture tends to enter masonry from air in humid climates, a most important but often underrated factor (Fig. 1) suggesting that sealing should be the answer. Undesirable staining and efflorescence result in accelerated scaling. Today, the great variety of chemicals available to the modem conservator for sealing. consolidating, or hardening stone fall into two very different categories: surface sealers and penetrating stone consolidants, or a combination of both. SEALERS Sealers develop a tight, impervious skin which prevents access of moisture. Surface sealing has saved monuments from decay by eliminating the access of atmospheric humidity. Pressure tends to develop behind the stone surface by moisture escape. Efflorescence, crystal growth action, and freezing can cause considerable spalling (Anderegg, 1949). Flaking results when moisture is trapped behind the sealed surface. Yellowing and blotchiness are also frequently observed. The following sealants are in common use today: linseed oil, paraffin, silicone, urethane, acrylate, and animal blood on stone and adobe. Extensive cracking and yellowing has resulted soon after application. In the past many such treatments have created more problems than cures: 1. Linseed oil and paraffin have been in use for centuries. Embrittlement and yellowing occur rapidly because these are readily attacked by solar ultraviolet radiation. 2. Animal blood as paint has temporarily waterproofed adobe mud and stone masonry. The origin of blood paint has a religious background rooted in the Phoenician and Hebrew cultures. Instant water soluble dried blood can substitute for fresh blood. Winkler (1956) described the history and technique of the use of blood. 3. Silicones have proven very effective and are long lasting. In contrast, acrylates, urethane, and styrene are generally rapidly attacked by UV radiation (Clark et al., 1975). Sealing of Different Rock Types Granitic rocks have a natural porosity traced to 4.5% contraction of quartz, during cooling of the parent magma, compared with only 2% contraction of all other minerals; protection against the hygric forces may require waterproofing of granite in some in- stances. The Egyptian granite obelisk in London is an example. Soon after its relocation from Egypt to London, Cleopatra&apos;s Needle was treated, in 1879, with a mixture of Damar resin and wax dissolved in clear petroleum spirit; surface scaling became evident after half a year of exposure to the humid London atmosphere. The treatment of the ancient granite monument from Egypt has denied access of high relative humidity (RH) in London to the trapped salts inherited from the Egyptian desert and has protected the monument from decay (Burgess and Schaffer, 1952). The sister obelisk set up in Central Park, New York City, has fared less favorably because similar treatment was done too late, only after the salts hydrated and hundreds of kilograms of scalings disfigured the obelisk surface (Winkler, 1980). Surface coating of other common stones may be needed. Crystalline marble absorbs moisture from high RH atmospheres: dilation may ensue when curtain panels bow as the moisture starts to expand during daily heating-cooling cycles. A good sealer may prevent the moisture influx provided that no moisture can enter from the inside of the building. Limestones, dolomites and all carbonate rocks are subject to dissolution attack by rainwater, especially in areas where acid rain prevails (Fig. 2). The interaction of sulfates in the atmosphere with the stone can be halted by waterproofing to avoid the formation of soft and more soluble gypsum. The stone surface attack can be diminished if nearly insoluble Ca-sulfite crusts can form, instead of Ca-sulfate. Replacement of fluorite or barium compounds at the stone surface acts as a hardener, rather than a sealant. Sandstones have generally high porosity and rapid water travel can occur along unexpected routes and from any direction. Any surface sealing may do more damage by scaling and bursting than if the stone is left without treatment. Sealing of sandstones is therefore not advised at any time. Testing the efficiency of sealants: Several authors discuss waterproofing materials, silicones, urethanes, acrylates and stearates, as to their water absorption, spreading rates of water on the treated surface, water vapor transmission, resistance to efflorescence, and general appearance (Clark et al., 1975). De Castro (1983) measured the angle of contact of a microdrop (0.004 cm3) on a stone surface as characteristic of the wettability. A computerized heuristic model for an efficient and economic design of belt haulage networks in underground coal mines is discussed. The model is versatile, easy to use, and is valid for all mining methods singly or in combination. It may be used to design new networks or to analyze existing networks. The input data required are 1. maximum production rates from a section, 2. probabilities of production rates, 3. equipment costs, and 4. data necessary for network coding to represent different cases. The objective function is the "expected minimum cost per ton of coal hauled" while meeting production requirements. The output includes belt width, motor horsepower, bin size etc. and also values of operating parameters for each belt such as belt speed, effective tension, power consumption etc. A detailed account of the cost involved is also provided for each unit as well as for the entire network. Description of the model and an example of the design of a belt network in a mine with two longwall and four development sections are presented.

With the world’s ever-expanding push to expand technological capabilities, the need for specialized materials including rare earth elements has exploded. One source found in the USA is bastnaesite, a rare earth bearing fluorocarbonate mineral, currently mined at the Mountain Pass Mine in California. To increase production, it is essential to optimize existing processes and create new ones to better utilize current resources. Therefore, a US Department of Energy Critical Materials Institute sponsored research program was carried out at the Kroll Institute for Extractive Metallurgy to expand the fundamental understanding of the industrial bastnaesite concentrate leaching system. With the help of prior knowledge, thermodynamic calculations and design of experimentation based lab testing, a novel single-stage hydrochloric leach system was created to optimize the rare earth extraction from bastnaesite. Historically, the existing industrial process has utilized a two-stage leach system involving a high-temperature hydrochloric acid leach with liquid solid separations followed by a caustic crack stage of the leach residues. A series of single-stage leach experiments were run by reacting locked cycle flotation concentrates with hydrochloric acid to test common leaching parameters. The results of these patent pending single-stage tests have shown rare earth recoveries significantly higher than reported recoveries of historic two-stage caustic crack processes, all while decreasing the equipment required and the type and amount of reagents needed.

This paper describes an integrated computer facility supporting the functions and responsibilities of shift operations, scheduling, maintenance and management using real-time interactive techniques. The functions and responsibilities as related to coal export terminals are specifically addressed, although these functions would be equally applicable to other terminal configurations and other commodities. A discussion of the resulting benefits are presented: - throughput efficiency - long-term planning and scheduling, using simulation - operations monitoring and protection - demurrage/despatch optimization - preventative maintenance - operational productivity

In the minerals industry today, the ?low hanging fruit? that once existed to debottleneck production and improve recovery, while meeting market needs for quality in mineral processing operations, are more and more difficult to find. Systematic methods for establishing plant mass flow, recovery, operational efficiency and control strategy in context with customer specifications provides the necessary insight and confidence for plant operators to prioritize improvement projects in order to maximize return on investment (ROI) for the site. The evaluation of aggregate and industrial mineral processing plants requires the following steps when projecting cost saving opportunities: collecting background data, conducting a base-line evaluation, analyzing specific unit-operation performance, defining investment options, prioritizing the selected improvement opportunities and the implementing process changes. The following paper describes the approach and challenges of developing an improvement plan for a dry and wet mineral processing operation.

Much has been published concerning the subject of coal preparation as related to electric power generation however it is always a most vital topic for both utilities and coal producers, It also constitutes a field of study that is never finished since new concepts and changing demands continually require altered perspectives. One graphic illustration that has been used to emphasize the rapidity with which times are changing is the fact that during World War I, a station that consumed 1000 tons per day was looked upon as a large central station, while today some single generators require 1500 tons during the same period, For further emphasis, at that time a 20,000 horsepower turbo-generator was a mighty large machine; today, a unit of this size is planned for driving the boiler water feed pump required for a single large main unit. During the past ten years alone, electric utilities have more than doubled their percentage of coal consumed as compared to the total market. They now account for approximately 40% of the United States consumption and one-third of all production including export, Conversely, approximately 70% of all U. S. steam electric generation is by coal and this percentage is expected to increase. It is further predicted that utility consumption will increase from the current 160,000,000 tons per year to between 400 and 500 million tons in 1975 which is approximately equal to todays total production

The limited effectiveness of the original hot water process for recovery of bitumen from certain Utah tar sands containing bitumen of higher viscosity (e.g. Sunnyside, Tar Sand Triangle)1,2 indicated that bitumen viscosity strongly&apos; influences the separation efficiency. In this regard, there should exist a critical value of bitumen viscosity above which the effectiveness of the hot water process decreases significantly. Apparently certain tar sands contain bitumen of such high viscosity that even a digestion temperature of nearly 100°C is insufficient to lower the viscosity below the critical value. In addition it seems that differences in physico-chemical forces which act between sand and bitumen are negligible in comparison to the difference in visco-mechanical forces. Predominantly mechanical forces hold viscous bitumen on the rough surface and in the pores of sand particles, resulting in strong adhesion. This phenomenon is a critical feature in the phase disengagment of oil-wetted domestic tar sands with viscosity control by temperature. Besides increasing the temperature for viscosity control the effectiveness of the original hot water process could be enhanced by control of bitumen viscosity with diluent additions. Strictly speaking this appraoch is the only possibility for heavy bitumen for which the high temperature of digestion does not lower the viscosity sufficiently. As a result of viscosity control by diluent addition the digestion temperature can be lowered which is important from an industrial standpoint. Another important consideration is that effective phase disengagement occurs only when the entire bitumen phase has the same viscosity. This means that some time (penetration time) is necessary for complete and uniform dilution of the bitumen. If the viscosity of bitumen, which is a function of temperature, diluent addition and penetration time, controls the separation efficiency, hot water processing of many different kinds of tar sands should be possible, assuming that the sand phase consists primarily of quartz-type minerals.

From the earliest use of crushed and broken stone as landfill for eroded gullies in trails and roads, to the mixing of sand and gravel with cement to make concrete, men and women have found mineral aggregates to be useful materials in satisfying human wants. Crushed stone, sand and gravel, volcanic cinders, pumice, manufactured lightweight aggregates, slag, cinders, expanded perlite and vermiculite, and a great array of recycled materials such as grog (broken or crushed brick) and fly ash have served as mineral aggregates. These materials have provided bulk and strength in portland cement concrete, bituminous concrete, road base, fill, concrete block, and plaster and stucco finishes. Mineral aggregates provide many special characteristics such as compressive and tensile strength, surface textures, weight and density, thermal and acoustical insulation, abrasion resistance, and impermeability to various concrete products and mixes. While most materials used as mineral aggregates are consumed on the basis of their low unit values, the large volumes extracted in the United States each year make them one of the most valuable mineral resources in current production. In 1960, US production of construction aggregate was just over a billion tons per year (Meyer and Zelnick, 1991). Two decades of accelerated interstate highway, residential, and commercial construction brought the total annual production of mineral aggregates to roughly 1.4 Gtpy by 1970 and just over 1.6 Gtpy by the late 1970s. General economic and related construction slowdowns in the early 1980s saw annual US production of aggregates fall to below 1.1 Gt in 1982, and then rise to just over 1.7 Gtpy in 1990, a new peak in mineral aggregate production and use. Per capita annual consumption of mineral aggregates was approximately 5.68 t/capita in 1960, 6.89 t/capita in 1970, rose to a high of 7.25 t/capita in 1979, and has since settled to just under 7 tpy for every man, woman, and child counted in the United States Census of 1990. The value of these materials came to approximately $9 billion in 1990. During the period 1960-1990, roughly half of all mineral aggregates were used in the construction of residential, commercial, and industrial structures, and the remainder was consumed in highways, bridges, and other transportation facilities such as railway roadbeds, airports, and water-related projects (Meyer and Zelnick, 1991). During the period 1988-1992, public works (highways, waterway projects, road maintenance, etc.) represented closer to 60% of annual mineral aggregate demand with residential and non-residential construction approximately 40%. The growing market share of public works projects has been mostly due to the dramatic slowdown in residential, commercial, and industrial construction during the 1988-1992 period.

Artificial Intelligence has a long history but is currently coming strongly into focus with new advancements. This leads to questions many people are asking: what exactly is AI, how can it be used effectively in mining operations, and what foundation is required to make AI implementations successful? In mining, many AI applications exist, from drill pattern optimization to predictive maintenance. However, many implementations struggle due to data integration challenges. Mining operations generate large amounts of data from many sources, such as fleet management systems, drill sensors, process control systems, and laboratory results. Unfortunately, this data often exists in silos where it’s difficult to get it out, making AI applications unable to leverage it. Worse still, tools that use AI don’t always provide their data back to the system, creating even further data silos. All these problems make it hard to take advantage of the data at the mine, slowing down and reducing the effectiveness of AI. This paper presents a comprehensive approach to organizing mining data using an AI-ready knowledge graph system. We will first explore the evolution of AI in mining, from early expert systems to modern machine learning applications. Then, we will detail how a knowledge graph can integrate business context, operational data, and AI models into a cohesive system that enables more effective AI implementations across mining operations. The proposed method has been developed considering both the unique data challenges faced by the mining industry, while also considering best practices learned from the AI field at large. By following this approach, it’s possible to better utilize existing data, getting higher quality and more complete results faster, and in a way that’s reusable and composable.

The Otjikoto Gold Mill was commissioned during November–December 2014 as Namibia’s first new gold producer in 30 years. Its operations consist of surface mining with a modern gravity/carbon-in-pulp mill for ore treatment and gold recovery. The initial mill design capacity was 2.5 Mt/a. Its capacity was expanded after nine months of operation to 3.1 Mt/a, and process performance has significantly surpassed design expectations. After startup, the Otjikoto Mill’s throughput and gold recovery ramped up quickly, with both parameters exceeding design after only two months of operation. The robust process performance continued into 2019, with key performance indicators (KPIs) eclipsing design values in almost every aspect of mill operation. The Otjikoto Mill’s gold recovery is exceptionally high, exceeding 98 percent every year following startup, especially considering the low-grade nature of the deposit.

The study analyzes the impact of the Continuous Personal Dust Monitor (CPDM) on reducing overexposures to coal mine dust. It compares compliance sampling data before and after the implementation of the CPDM and the 2014 MSHA dust rule. The results indicate a significant reduction in the percentage of samples exceeding the dust standard for various mining occupations, highlighting the effectiveness of the CPDM in improving miners’ health and safety.

A new generation of hydraulic efficient pumper and auxiliary impeller designs is the result of an extensive research program focused on improving the overall performance of optimized SX/EW plants. Combined with the proper scale-up, these optimized designs will greatly reduce aqueous and organic entrainment losses, reduce or eliminate air entrainment and crud formation, enhance mass-transfer and maximize the overall copper yield. Currently, these new pumper and auxiliary impellers are installed full-scale in numerous plants ranging in flow rates from 90 to 15000 G.P.M. and developed heads up to 51 inches. Operational results reported by the independent metallurgist at each processing plant are reporting the lowest entrainment results in the industry. Further R&D has just been completed on a new mixing configuration that separates the systems mixing and pumping requirements. Results from the system pilot test document further improvements in reduction of both chemical entrainment and crud formation, while keeping mass transfer stage efficiencies.

The use of finite element programs for evaluating large grinding mill shells is becoming increasingly popular. However, large scale, detailed analysis can become a burdensome task when one is required to manually prepare the necessary data to be entered into the program, while evaluating the voluminous results is even more devastating. Although available computerized finite element analyses can reduce computation time from years to months or even weeks, additional pre and post processors can reduce the time for data preparation and result evaluation to hours, while simultaneously reducing the probability of human error. Examples of the uses of these processors are presented as well as typical modeling techniques.
