Allis-Chalmers has combined a new heat transfer device, called the ROLLER GRATE, with a unique processing scheme, resulting in the ROLLER GRATE Oil Shale Processing System of Allis-Chalmers. In order to test both the process and the equipment, a batch Process Development Unit (PDU) ROLLER GRATE retort was designed and built. This unit vas designed with the flexibility to process shale over a wide range of test conditions in order to demonstrate the attributes of the oil-shale processing system. Instrumentation on the PDU and extensive sampling of the effluent streams permitted the PDU test data to be used in the design and scale-up of the process. Over 30 tests have been conducted with Colorado shale, and over 25 tests have been run with an Indiana shale. In addition, rests have been run with California and Utah tar sands.

This paper focuses on the selection of AC induction motors for gyratory crusher, cone crusher, and grinding mill applications. The criteria for motor selection includes: proper enclosure, driven equipment torque requirements, bearing life, temperature rise, starting requirements, ambient temperature, altitude and accessory requirements.

The environmental liabilities of coal waste disposal sites can have a major impact on a mining project's economic viability. Developing a waste disposal site is no longer simply an exercise in completing paperwork to obtain a permit, with the proliferation of environmental regulations in recent years, managing disposal sites now requires design creativity, short term and long term planning and detailed monitoring to maximize the benefits to the mining company. Operating costs and future capital costs for expansion of existing sites, new site development and regulatory compliance should be reviewed periodically and considered in the overall management plan. This paper discusses various management methods that are being employed in the industry to improve waste disposal operations both environmentally and profitably.

Acid-activated montmorillonite is used worldwide as a catalyst and as a sorbent for the enhancement and purification of petroleum products as well as vegetable and animal-based fats. The solid-acid character of the activated montmorillonite is imparted by the manufacturing process, giving it unique properties that are exploited in these industries. Several international companies and a multitude of local clay producers are focusing on improving the efficiency of their standard and specialized products. This paper will describe the use of acid-activated montmorillonite in traditional sorbent applications, as a solid acid catalyst, and other new uses.

High pressure grinding rolls have been utilized in various operations during the past four decades, simply due to their inherent mode of breakage that offers metallurgical benefits with pronounced energy reduction. For every new application, wear and in particular roll surface wear protection has always been the focal point of HPGR trade-off studies. Wear remains an important issue throughout a mine’s life given inevitable variations in the ore deposits properties. Hence, the capability of continuous scanning of rolls provides ample information about any deviations in the design values as well as their effect on the wear pattern. In part I of this manuscript, we present the feasibility of in-line scanning of roll surface in a 200 × 100 mm lab-scale HPGR. First, the in-line scanning was developed in a mock-up roll and then the scanner was moved to the laboratory-scale HPGR. We present the choice of scanners and the methods adopted to achieve high-level accuracy of determining wear. Even though we planned for micron-level precision of scanning, the inherent variability in shaft rotation was higher than the variability in the roll diameter due to wear. The hundred-kilogram mass processed in the HPGR was not sufficient to create enough wear that is discernible to the in-line scanner. Yet, the method tested is a promising avenue for inline scanning of HPGR rolls.

Introduction Occurrences of platinum group minerals (PGM) in mafic and ultramafic rocks in association with Cu-Ni mineralization are well known. Yet for the Duluth Complex, a large body of dominantly mafic igneous rocks in northeastern Minnesota with significant Cu-Ni mineralization (Bonnichsen, 1972; Boucher, 1975; Watowich, 1978; Weiblen and Morey, 1980), little has been published concerning its platinum group element (PGE) contents and mineralogy. In a previous study of massive sulfide rock, sperrylite (PtAs2) was found in nickel arsenide and recovery of arsenide minerals by flotation has been investigated (Iwasaki et al., 1986; Ryan and Weiblen, 1984). Recently, an announcement was made of the discovery of significant quantities of platinum and palladium [peak assay values of 9 g/t (0.27 oz per st)] in an interval of a drill core with disseminated sulfide mineralization 16 km (10 miles) southeast of Ely, MN (Anon, 1985; Sabelin, 1985). This paper describes PGM from the Pt-Pd-enriched zone and evaluates their potential for concentration. Geologic setting The Pt-Pd zone occurs in the South Kawishiwi in¬trusion near its basal contact at 734 to 737 m (2408 to 2418 ft) depth. The South Kawishiwi is one of several minor mafic intrusions that constitute the western margin of the Duluth Complex near Ely, MN (Fig. 1). It is com¬prised of a 70.1- to 350.5-m (230- to 1150-ft) thick sul¬fide-bearing basal unit of troctolite with minor amounts of anorthosite, norite, picrite, and oxide layers overlain by a troctolite unit with interlayered anorthosite (Bonnichsen et al., 1980; Foose, 1984; and Foose and Weiblen, 1986). The basal unit, in which the Pt-Pd zone is found, is markedly heterogeneous in rock type, lacking any coherent internal stratigraphy, and shows evidence of both pre- and post-consolidation faulting (Foose and Weiblen, 1986). Geochemistry Chemical analyses were made on 0.3-m (1-ft) intervals of crushed drill core material (1/4 core, BX size) at 731.5 to 740.7 m (2400 to 2430 ft) depth and the results are presented in Fig. 2. The analytical techniques used were atomic absorption spectrometry for silver, chromium, copper, and nickel; a coulometric titration method for sulfur; and a combined fire assay-DC plasma technique for gold, palladium, and platinum. Figure 2 shows the significant enrichment of platinum and palladium at 734 to 737 m (2408 to 2418 ft) depth; it corresponds to a stratigraphic interval rich in oxide minerals. Average values for platinum and palladium contents over the 3-m (10-ft) interval are 2520 and 2580 ppb, respectively, or 5.1 g/t (0.15 oz per st) platinum plus palladium. Platinum plus palladium contents from individual 0.3-m (1-ft) intervals are as high as 9120 ppb or 9.1 g/t (0.27 oz per st) and average 7.4 g/t (0.22 oz per st) in a 1.5-m (5-ft) interval in the richest part of the zone. The Pt-to-Pd ratio is nearly 1:1 over the entire 9.1-m (30-ft) interval and the platinum and palladium correlate closely with chromium, which ranges from 1.9% to 5.3%. Copper, nickel, and sulfur contents for the drill core interval are also given in Fig. 2. In¬terestingly, the Pt-Pd high corresponds to a depletion in copper, nickel, and sulfur. A critical component of implementing autonomous systems is the ability to use information from a robust sensory and information system to make sound, predictable, and repeatable decisions to assure safety. This means that any such system would need to evaluate what objects (people, equipment, boulders, etc.) of interest exist in that environment (with relevant data about identity, trajectory, characteristics, etc.), project a future continuum of those objects (including considerations for variabilities), and make control intervention choices to minimize risk due to exposures in the present operational area. The components of an overall system would include: a) sensor and data fusion, b) probability projection of future states, c) generation and evaluation of alternate futures, and d) implementation of best course of action to reduce risk. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) is studying this framework for applications for autonomous mining equipment. This paper focuses on using information from the sensor fusion engine to generate a continuous projection of future and alternate states (b and c above) incorporating the factors of confidence, accuracy, tolerance, and other variabilities. We refer to this as Machine Situational Awareness (MSA).

An integrated suite of environmental methods was used to characterize the hydrogeological, geological and tectonic regimes of the study area, to determine the geometry of the landfill (depth and spatial extent of electrically conductive anomalies), to define the anisotropy caused by bedrock fabric fractures and to locate potential zones of electrically conductive contamination. The study area which covers an area of about 0.08 Km2 is a municipal solid waste site (MSW), located 20Km West of Herakleion in the central part of Crete (S. Greece). The landfill is located in a northwest oriented valley with highlands to the northeast and southwest. The combination of geophysical methods and chemical analysis are commonly implemented for characterization and management of land-fills. At the particular site, geophysical methods were focused on studying the electrical insolating properties of the materials, electrical con-ducting properties of fluids (leachates) and electromagnetic properties of the disturbed regolith materials in the burial zones. Three different types of geophysical surveys were performed: 1) 2D electrical tomography (ERT), 2) electro-magnetic measurements using very low frequencies (VLF) and 3) electromagnetic conductivity (EM31). Furthermore, in order to calibrate the geophysical methods dielectric spectrometry measurements are conducted. To evaluate the environmental degradation of the area, soil and liquids samples were collected.

Mines are filled with a mixture of gases, some of which are toxic, flammable, or explosive. Others serve as early reporters of impending problems. Mines monitor these gases in order to ensure the safe, efficient operation of the facility and avoid losses or disasters. Two different approaches to monitor these gases have historically been taken. One kind of device measures the amount of each gas present by using selective detectors (e.g. handhelds and spectrometers). Another kind separates the mixture of gases into the individual constituents, then measures the amount of each gas present (e.g. gas chromatographs). Handheld units are the most widely used, but gas chromatographs are the most powerful yet underutilized units available to enhance mining operations. There are many misconceptions about the nature, applicability and proper use of each type of device, and little data is available. Up to this point, many people had only the manufacturers? claims to guide them. This study was undertaken to clarify the range of applicability, important characteristics, and value in use of these units in real-world situations. An additional goal of the study was to provide ways to evaluate comparative data, and thus aid mining operations in choosing the most beneficial and reasonable ways to use such devices in various situations and contexts.

The bulk materials handling industry has served silently for years as the skeleton structure and often the central system of nerves and nourishment for the body of basic production industries. During the past two decades, this body has undergone substantial growth and mutation to meet the surging demands of our national economy for more and better products. The steel industry has been prominent in this phenomena and plants of the sixties are as unlike the second war vintage as our current crop of basketball players differ from their fathers. Steel has kept pace with spiralling demand by innovation which has resulted in new processes and improved designs which generally yield greater production from fewer units. The supporting industry of materials handling has likewise improved its techniques and currently has a new stronger generation of equipment to perform its necessary supporting function. It has been my fortunate experience to have been instrumental in the creative stages of several new steel mills which are currently in conceptual design or actual construction. Drawing upon exerpts from this experience, this paper will describe a basic approach to the selection and application of modern bulk materials handling systems to an entirely new steel plant. Specific details of past work are not available for publication, therefore, the plant described herein is a composite of ideas and will be the new plant of the Hypothetical Steel Corporation which will be located on the lower shores of the Great Lakes.

Power draw of the mill has been accepted as an indicator of the performance of the mill, yet the problem of predicting power under a given set of mill operating conditions still remains to be solved. In the literature, this problem of predicting power is attributed to a lack of knowledge with regard to the motion of the charge. Here a DEM based model is used to analyze the motion of the charge. The resulting information is used to predict the power draw of the mill. A 16-ft diameter mill is simulated. A factorial design study of the variables-mill speed, lifter configuration and ball size distribution-as independent variables is taken up. The power draw as a response variable is analyzed to establish the best operating condition of the mill.

Mixing is a common unit operation in the mining industry. Mixers are often used in agitated leach, bio-oxidation, and pressure oxidation. In all of these cases it is important to understand the application and what it requires from a mixer in order to be opti­mized. In the mining industJy, it is obviously important to suspend solids. However, the shear level of each of these three applications is ve1y different. In acid leaching, the mixer needs to suspend solids and produce a good degree of blending. In pressure oxida­tion, the agitator must also disperse air or oxygen by creating fine bubbles. Because of the presence of microorganisms, bio-oxida­tion requires less shear than the other two processes, but the agita­tor must be able to suspend the solids, provide excellent blend­ing/heat tJ·ansfer and distribute the air. Thus, in the mining indus­tiy there is an application spectJ·um that requires different impellers to perfotm different jobs. Specifically, these jobs are blending, solids suspension, gas dispersion, mass transfer and heat transfer. It is important to determine whether the process is mass transfer or kinetic rate limited. Mixers affect a mass transfer limitation but have no affect on the kinetics.

As part of its program to conserve domestic mineral resources through advancing mineral resources technology, the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, conducted investigations to determine the feasibility of recovering high-grade barite concentrates, suitable for use as well-drilling mud, from current and old waste pond materials and materials bypassed in present mining operations. Flotation studies of waste pond samples from Missouri and Nevada yielded barite concentrates containing over 95 percent BaSO4 with recoveries of 86 percent and 96 percent, respectively, of the barite in the flotation feed. Flotation studies of a hard-rock sample from Georgia, currently bypassed in mining, yielded a barite concentrate containing 97 percent BaSO4 with an attendant recovery of 97 percent of the barite.

A booster fan is an underground ventilation device installed in the main airstream to handle the total quantity of air circulated to one or more working districts. It is installed in a permanent stopping and equipped with airlock doors, a monitoring system and interlocking devices between the main fan and the booster fan. When adequately installed, a booster fan can be used to reduce the main fan pressure, reduce leakage and decrease the power consumption. However, an inadequate installation can increase the likelihood of mine fies and recirculation of air contaminants. This study identifies hazards associated with the operation and maintenance of booster fans. It analyzes the accompanying risks and recommends control measures to reduce those risks to acceptable levels. The ventilation network of an existing coal mine was updated to include a booster fan. The hazards associated with the operation of this fan were identified, the risks analyzed and the esponse to each failure mode established.

A mixed-integer formulation of the mine scheduling problem is discussed and applied for the purpose of optimizing both the mine production sequencing and the mill blending and processing problems simultaneously. Previous attempts at solving these problems separately, although successful, fail to take into account the interrelationships between these problems. Project structure serves as the outline of this paper, which is directed towards a mining engineering audience. Generalized in its organization, this concept is useful for long, intermediate and short range scheduling. Actual applications are mentioned which show that the concept is also applicable to mining a variety of ores.

This paper presents the results of an application of the PSU/USBM Open Pit Materials Handling Simulator (1) to a large stripping mine in the Southwestern Coalfield. The specific objective of the study was to demonstrate the application of the simulator to a complex multi-pit operation, with emphasis on simulating short term and long term production plans recommended for the mine by Theodore Barry Associates (2). Mine Description The mine is located in the Southwestern Coalfield, which encompasses parts of the states of Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. The lease area presently covers 121500 x 103 m2 (30000 acres) in a strip 37.007 x 103 m (23 miles) from north to south and up to 1609 m (1 mile) in width, located at an elevation above 1525 m (5000 ft). Three gently dipping coal seams are present, of which the upper seam (#3) averages 0-5.5 m (0-18 ft); the intermediate seam (#2) averages 0-1.2 m (0-4 ft); and the lower seam (#1) averages 0-2.4 m (0-8 ft). Overburden is mixed sand, gravel, calcareous clay, caliche and sandstone, with calcareous shale and sandstone burden between seams. Where the seams are covered by less than 6.1 m (20 ft) of overburden, they are generally weathered and oxidized and are not extracted. Stripping ratios have ranged from 3.5 to 6.0 with an average of 5.4. All future plans were based on a stripping ratio of 5.3.

The process of treating granular activated carbon for return to service in the recovery of gold in Carbon in Pulp and Carbon in Leach circuits has been investigated. Carbons from four U.S.A. mines, one Canadian mine and one South African mine were characterized before and after regeneration. The use of thermal gravimetric analyses demonstrated the presence of inorganic compounds on the surface of the carbon. Thermal regeneration was investigated using factorial' analysis to determine the effect or interaction of furnace temperature, retention time and the use of supplemental steam. The operation of acid leaching prior to or after gold elution was investigated. The effect of water quenching, regenerated carbon was also studied. From the data obtained in this investigation, guidelines are given for effective regeneration operation.

INTRODUCTION Shotcrete can be defined as spray-applied concrete with a maximum size aggregate in excess of 9.5 mm (0.375 in.). The concept evolved from guniting, which uses smaller aggregate and generally produces concrete with poorer physical properties. The larger aggregate used in shotcrete requires less water in the mix, while offering larger bonding surfaces, thus imparting greater tensile and compressive strengths. TYPES OF MACHINES Two basic designs of shotcrete machines in general use are the wet or prehydrated zero slump and low slump type, and the dry or nozzle hydrated machines. Fig. 1 shows a typical zero-slump machine in a con¬figuration commonly used for small-volume require¬ments. The prehydrated zero-slump machine mixes exactly proportioned batches in a sealed pressurized chamber. "Slugs" of hydrated shotcrete mix and com¬pressed air are sent through a distribution hose to the nozzle where the wet mix emerges as a spray. The spray is directed onto the rock surface by the nozzle operator. The low-slump machine is similar, except that a thick slurry mix of aggregate is delivered throughout the distribution hose to the nozzle. Fig. 2 shows a typical low-slump shotcrete machine used in moderate-volume applications. The nozzle-hydrated shotcrete machine accepts a premixed "dry" (4 to 6% moisture) batch of aggregate and cement. A constant feed of this mix is directed by compressed air through the distribution hose to the nozzle. At the nozzle, water for hydration is introduced into the emerging spray. The hydrated mixture is di¬rected onto the rock surface by the nozzle operator. Fig. 3 shows a typical dry-mix machine. The major difference between the two basic machine designs is the consistency of the shotcrete quality. Pre¬hydrated machines have high degrees of consistency and produce high-strength concrete, resulting from their ability to produce exact mixtures of zero or low-slump concrete within the machine. Nozzle-hydrated machines tend to produce poorer quality concrete because of the difficulty in controlling the water content at the nozzle. Water input essentially is an art. The Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) investigated ways to increase mine airflow to underground metal/nonmetal (M/NM) mine working areas to improve miners? health and safety. One of those areas is controlled recirculation. Because the quantity of mine air often cannot be increased, reusing part of the ventilating air can be an effective alternative, if implemented properly, until the capacity of the present system is improved. The additional airflow can be used to provide effective dilution of contaminants and higher flow velocities in the underground mine environment. Most applications of controlled recirculation involve taking a portion of the return air and passing it back into the intake to increase the air volume delivered to the desired work areas. OMSHR investigated a Nevada gold mine where shaft rehabilitation was in progress and one of the two main fans was shut down to allow reduced air velocity for safe shaft work. Underground booster fan operating pressures were kept constant to maintain airflow to work areas, inducing controlled recirculation in one work zone. Investigation into system behavior and the effects of recirculation on the working area during times of reduced primary ventilation system airflow would provide additional information on implementation of controlled recirculation into the system and how these events affect M/NM ventilation systems. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health monitored the ventilation district when both main fans were operating and another scenario with one of the units turned off for maintenance. Airflow and contaminants were measured to determine the exposure effects of induced recirculation on miner health. Surveys showed that 19% controlled recirculation created no change in the overall district airflow distribution and a small reduction in district fresh air intake. Total dust levels increased only modestly and respirable dust levels were also low. Diesel particulate matter (DPM) levels showed a high increase in district intake mass flow, but minor increases in exposure levels related to the recirculation percentage. Utilization of DPM mass flow rates allows input into ventilation modeling programs to better understand and plan for ventilation changes and district recirculation effects on miners? health.
