Rapidly rising gas and oil prices and the falling quality of coal is forcing energy users in many parts of the world to consider the application of low grade fuel, particularly coal, for steam raising and power generation. However, the use of such low grade coal is normally resisted by the consumer because of operational problems associated with high ash content, sulfur emission and, in some instances, slagging problems caused by low melting temperature constituents in the ash. Recently developed technology involving 'fluidized bed combustion' offers a potential solution to these operational problems. Much of the early work was conducted in Britain, where rig tests were commenced during the early 1960's. This has led on to the successful conversion and operation of a fluidized bed fired industrial boiler at the Renfrew works of Babcock & Wilcox Ltd. Orders for the first commercial boilers incorporating this technology have recently been announced. Significant development work on fluidized combustion is now being undertaken in various parts of the world, in particular North America, Germany and Japan, and the first large scale units are under construction or being commissioned. This paper concentrates on the development of the technology in Britain, outlines the reasons for applying fluidized bed combustion and de-scribes its application at atmospheric pressure for steam raising and at elevated pressure for power generation . Coal Processing Consultants is a Partnership between the National Coal Board and Babcock & Wilcox Ltd. of Britain and has been established in order to provide technical advice and economic evaluations on all aspects of coal processing and utilization. The study investigates the effectiveness of the canopy air curtain (CAC) in reducing respirable dust exposure for shuttle car and ramcar operators in underground coal mining. Field testing showed that the CAC reduced dust exposure by 11-34% overall and by 57-65% during ramcar loading by the continuous miner. These results demonstrate the CAC’s potential as a significant dust control device.

An alternate development drilling strategy to the one currently in use at the nine was investigated using geostatistics for a portion of the pit. The study area consisted of 4,000' x 5,000' in plan and 1,080' in elevation. The massive orebody, the three-dimensional nature of the problem, and the location of ultimate pit limit in the study area all created some unique problems in devising the development drilling strategy, as compared to the two-dimensional tabular deposits such as coal deposits. Rather than using the confidence interval of the global reserve estimate as the main criterion for development drilling, the confidence interval of short and medium range mine planning blocks was used as the objective. Based on somewhat arbitrarily selected level of confidence, the results from this study showed that a total of 50 DDHs rather than the planned 62 DDHs is sufficient in the study area, if the selected confidence levels are acceptable to the management. This paper also emphasizes the importance of the particular objectives being used in development drilling and how they influence the "optimai" place- ment of the development drill holes.

"Phosphate beneficiation in Florida generates more than one tonne of phosphatic clay, or slime, per tonne of phosphate rock produced. Since the start of the practice of large-scale washing and desliming for phosphate beneficiation, more than 2 Gt of slime has accumulated, containing approximately 600 Mt of phosphate rock, 600 kt of rare earth elements (REEs) and 80 million kilograms of uranium. The recovery of these valuable elements from the phosphatic clay is one of the most challenging endeavors in mineral processing, because the clay is extremely dilute, with an average solids concentration of 3 percent, and fine in size, with more than 50 percent having particle size smaller than 2 µm, and it contains nearly 50 percent clay minerals as well as large amounts of magnesium, iron and aluminum. With industry support and under funding from the Critical Materials Institute, the Florida Industrial and Phosphate Research Institute in conjunction with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory undertook the task to recover phosphorus, rare earths and uranium from Florida phosphatic clay. This paper presents the results from the preliminary testing of two approaches. The first approach involves three-stage cycloning using cyclones with diameters of 12.4 cm (5 in.), 5.08 cm (2 in.) and 2.54 cm (1 in.), respectively, to remove clay minerals followed by flotation and leaching. The second approach is a two-step leaching process. In the first step, selective leaching was conducted to remove magnesium, thus allowing the production of phosphoric acid suitable for the manufacture of diammonium phosphate (DAP) in the second leaching step. The results showed that multistage cycloning with small cyclones is necessary to remove clay minerals. Selective leaching at about pH 3.2 using sulfuric acid was found to be effective for removing more than 80 percent of magnesium from the feed with minimal loss of phosphorus.IntroductionFlorida phosphate ore, or “matrix,” as it is called locally, contains three different mineral groups that have to be separated from each other: (1) phosphate minerals, (2) clay minerals and (3) quartz, or sand. As mined, the phosphate and sand particles are embedded in compacted mud, or clay-balls. Before separation can begin, all of the particles must be liberated from the matrix of mud. The very first unit operation in the beneficiation process is to disaggregate the various particles. This actually starts while the matrix is flowing through the multimile pipeline from the mine to the beneficiation plant. While in the pipeline, the matrix is exposed to shear forces as it passes through the various centrifugal pumps along the pipeline. These intense shear forces cause a significant percentage of the sand and phosphate particles to be liberated from the clay-balls by the time they arrive at the plant. Once they reach the plant, the first goal is to finish disaggregating the clay, and follow that by making a size separation at 1 mm. This processing is conducted in the washer, consisting of a large rotating trammel screen and a few stages of log washer, screens and hydrocyclones. In all of the currently operating beneficiation plants, the washer is a large structure that receives the matrix, screens it and then discharges a pebble phosphate product sized larger than 1.0 mm and a slurry of liberated clay, sand and phosphate particles that are smaller than 1.0 mm."

The City of New Haven is planning to construct the Downtown Storm Sewer Infrastructure Improvement project to mitigate on-going stormwater flooding in the Long Wharf District. The proposed project includes a 685 cubic feet per second (cfs) stormwater pump station and a 3,200 linear feet (975 meter) long tunnel segment with an internal diameter of 120-inches (3.05 meters). This paper presents the aspects of the final design and the use of the cloud-based data management software to make better data-informed decisions. The software was used to create a spatially aware database of the subsurface conditions, as well as improve visualization and analysis of the soil properties.

Every underground coal mine in the United States must deploy and operate a wireless communication and tracking system. This paper addresses the reliability and availability of an installed tracking system and the communications infrastructure that supports it. A particular interest is the requirements for the systems to operate continuously without failure after a mine disaster for 96 hours, and the requirements in the MINER Act for the tracking systems to be ?calculated to be serviceable? and the communications systems ?redundancy?. These requirements imply a certain reliability and availability. This paper describes a quantitative way to assess these systems requirements, using the tools that are available and commonly used by the Reliability, Maintainability, & Availability community.

Introduction A longwall mining demonstration currently in progress in the Herrin (No.6) Coal Member near Benton, Illinois, involves the extraction of three adjacent panels by the longwall method. The first panel was completed in May, 1977. The Illinois State Geological Survey is involved in this project for two reasons: (1) to detail the geology of the roof and relate the geologic features to the behavior of the roof during mining operations, and (2) to study the nature and occurrence of coal balls (carbonate petrifactions of peat) encountered during this demonstration. General Geology of Area The stratigraphic sequence of beds immediately above the No. 6 Coal in this area, ranging from oldest to youngest, is: gray shale (Energy Shale Member), black carbonaceous shale (Anna Shale Member), and argillaceous limestone (Brereton Limestone Member) (figure 1). In some areas of the mine, where one of these units may rest directly on the coal, one or more of the members is absent from the stratigraphic sequence. The nature of roof for the area is shown in figure 2. It is greatly exaggerated in the vertical direction. The Walshville Channel, 11.3 km west of this mine, was a river at least in part deposited at the same time as the coal. The gray shale wedge on top of the coal, which thins away from the channel, is thought to represent an overbank deposit of mud from the channel. The next layer deposited on top of the gray shale, and on the coal not covered by gray shale, is the black carbonaceous shale, believed to represent a mud deposited in a brackish environment. "The mining of tabular deposits accounts for a significant portion of modern production in both underground hard rock and especially, soft rock mining. There is a large discrepancy between the availability of tabular reserves and the amount of development of these deposits, particularly when the deposit has a dip of around 25-50 degrees. This project studied the technical and practical barriers to the mining of these deposits through modern and historical case studies. The primary technical barriers to the development of these deposits are material movement and roof support. The study of historical attempts overcome these barriers and why they failed allowed us to research the possibility of implementing modern technology on previously unsuccessful methods. By modifying some common mining methods, some of these deposits can be mined at only a marginal increase in cost and using readily available equipment. These modified mining methods could make previously underdeveloped deposits to become viable. INTRODUCTION Tabular deposits are defined as orebodies that extend at least hundreds of meters along two dimensions, and a substantially smaller amount along another [1]. Moderately bedded tabular deposits are mined less often than their more horizontal counterparts due to the technical issues they present. These issues often cause lower productivity, higher cost, and more frequent accidents. Moderate dip is a less well defined term; but in this case, it will refer to any deposit which has a dip of at least 20°. This paper will focus on deposits that dip around 25°-50° and are deep enough to require underground excavation methods. These deposits are too steep for most conventional methods yet not steep enough for gravity fed methods to work efficiently. In some cases, this dip range is also referred to as intermediate or steeply dipping. The types of deposits most likely to fall into this category are sedimentary bedded deposits such as coal, trona, evaporates, placers, and other alluvial deposits. Some other types of deposits can fall into this category as well. These include some of the metal reefs such as the Bushveld Complex in South Africa, which was deposited by lava flows, but is tabular. Some areas have dips that fall into the moderately inclined category. There are also some metamorphic deposits such as slate or marble that can have dips of more than 20°. The dip angle of these deposits can cause several challenges. Ore movement becomes more difficult as the exceeds the limits of conventional conveyors, rubber-tired, or tracked vehicles. At the same time the dip is below the angle of repose of the material. This prevents gravity assisted haulage, as the ore and waste will not run downhill by itself. Another common problem in moderately inclined underground mines is roof support. The dip angle can increase the risk of pillar and support failure. This is due to slippage between rock layers, non-perpendicular support of the vertical stresses, and slippage of standing supports. The inclination leads to stresses that are not usually found in typical horizontally bedded deposits. These stresses may require larger pillars that may reduce ore recovery below profitable levels."

Geosensing is used in oilfield drilling in conjunction with geophysical tools to support characterization of rock properties, geology, and reservoir conditions. This technology is now available to the mining industry and has been successfully applied to underground in-seam directional drilling in Australian coal mines for geologic exploration and methane drainage. The system utilizes a range of drill rig and wellhead mounted sensors which, combined with analytical software, produce real-time data from which 3D spatial features can be accurately modelled significantly in advance of mining. This innovation greatly expands on the information obtained from current in-seam directional drilling practices and provides for improved characterization of coal seams, including soft and weak zones, locations of geologic discontinuities, and analysis of formation flow. This paper provides a description of the geosensing system and the interpretation of actual data from long in-seam directionally drilled methane drainage boreholes at mines in Australia, and discusses how this system increases the value of directional drilling as an exploration tool for the coal mining sector, and the evaporite and hard-rock mining sectors where directional drilling is also applied.

INTRODUCTION The work described here refers to the Genesee River Interceptor Southeast Project. This project is a part of the Combined Sewer Overflow Abatement Program, Phase I, for the Rochester Pure Water District, Rochester, New York. Our contract required the design of a 13,200-feet long main tunnel, 14 feet finished diameter, approximately 100-120 Feet below ground; drop shafts and diversion tunnels to deliver surface flow to the main tunnel; a gate chamber whereby the main tunnel is dropped 35 feet, and provision made for connection to the future tunnel in Phase II, as well as a host of other surface structures. Cross sectional dimensions for the structures involved varied from 16 feet circular to a 20'x50' horseshoe, in a competent rock formation consisting of Lockport Dolomite and Rochester Shale. In the construction of a rock tunnel, the problems of the tunnel designers are as follows: 1. To evaluate stresses in the rock as a result of excavation. 2. Design a temporary support system to prevent any rock failure during the period of construction. Design of this temporary support system is empirical. Design loads given by empirical relations are dependent upon the rock quality and size of opening. Temporary support system may either be steel frames closely spaced along the length of tunnel and tied together, in the case of poor rock, or, an even spacing of rock bolts in the case of competent rock. 3. Design a final lining for the service loads. Service loads, in our case of a water-carrying tunnel, are hydrostatic pressure due to ground water, deadweight of lining) pressure of contained water and time dependent rock loading. The constitutive properties of the rock are extremely complex because of discontinuities, pre-existing stresses due to overburden, material symmetries and changes of initial state associated with the process of excavation. The changes of initial state may be changes of stress fields along with the consequent yield of the material or the extension of existing discontinuities.

Since 1976 CVRD is carrying out tests to develop a type of pellet made with organic binder. One binder that showed good possibility to be used in industrial plants is Peridur. An extensive framework of tests was run in CVRD's pilot plant. The results are presented in this paper. Finally, the decision was taken to carry out an industrial production of 50.000 t of pellets. It was scheduled for March '81. The results are shown in this pager. It was not observed any detrimental effect of the peridur neither in the process nor in the product quality.

In the time period from the early 1980's to the present, longwall roof support technology has evolved tremendously. Chock supports and caliper shields were replaced by 2-leg or 4-leg lemniscate shields. The lemniscate linkage for which the support is named offers numerous advantages to the sup-port both as a fabricated structure and to its performance in the mining application. The hydraulic system, which is the dynamic element of the roof support, was essentially unchanged in early lemniscate shields with the exception of the complexity of additional hydraulic circuits to power a canopy tilt cylinder and canopy side-seals. The control of these fluid-powered functions was provided by direct manual control of valves energizing individual functions onboard the roof-support or the adjacent roof-support. This control valve-gear was comprised of multiple individual valves arranged in a "bank" or integrated into a single hydraulic distribution block with a single operating handle to select any independent function.

The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) uses light-scattering real-time dust monitors (nephelometers) in its research to develop dust controls to reduce respirable silica dust overexposures in miners. Recently, the model 1500-pDR, an active nephelometer (i.e., with cyclone and pump configuration), was introduced by Thermo Scientific. Testing was completed to ensure compatibility with the metal/nonmetal mine dust personal sampling unit (M/NMDPSU). Results of testing demonstrated that gravimetric concentrations measured from the 1500-pDR are comparable to the gravimetric concentrations measured using the M/NMDPSU, without need for correction, under commonly observed dust loading conditions.

The adsorption of gold onto activated carbon in iodide solutions has been studied. The adsorption rates were determined as a function of temperature, salt concentration and pH as well as activated carbon concentration. A kinetic model was also developed for the adsorption. The adsorption rate was believed to be controlled by a mixed mechanism of film diffusion and pore diffusion, but the film diffusion had a major contribution to the overall rate. Experimental findings were in good agreement with the model developed. The apparent activation energy was found to be 14.9 kJ/mol.

The device called "Dynastat" which is described in this paper provides in situ borehole measurements of dynamic and static parameters for use in a wide range of design applications. In the dynamic mode, the Oynastat allows measurement of shear and compressional wave velocities. From these velocities in situ dynamic Young's modulus and other dynamic elastic parameters can be calculated. In the static mode, the device allows measurement of load versus deformation from which in situ static Young's modulus can be determined. Information on in situ horizontal stress fields can also be estimated from the load deformation curves. In both mining and civil engineering applications, in situ measurements of material properties are indispensable for accurate evaluation of design problems. Laboratory dynamic and static test measurements in comparison to in situ measurements are often misleading due to difficulties in obtaining undisturbed samples and in accounting for effects of discontinuities, etc., for mass properties. The authors contend that among in situ borehole measurements, the method employed with the Dynastat is the most accurate and detailed technique of measurement. The Dynastat employs the crosshole method of shear and compressional wave velocity measurements and also performs as a borehole jack to obtain load-deformation relationships of materials at exactly the same location at depth in boreholes.

The potential of the coal reserves in the western United States for meeting future energy needs has been recognized for quite some time. However, two of the major constraints which have tended to limit the development of these reserves which can only be deep-mined are the great thicknesses of the coal seams encountered and their high pitch. Although new mining methods may need to be developed to recover these reserves, at least in the short- term the industry has to incorporate presently available equipment which were not originally designed for thick-seam mining. The purpose of this paper is to present an analysis of the various equipment that are in use today and their possible application to thick-seam mining. The paper also addresses the various ground control and safety considerations that are unique to thick-seam extraction.

In order to overcome some of the deficiencies associated with conventional fine coal cleaning methods, a novel process known as microbubble column flotation (MICROCEL?) was developed at Virginia Tech. This article provides an overview of recent commercialization efforts and in-plant testing of this technology. The results of the in-plant test work indicate that the MICROCEL technology offers several advantages for the upgrading of difficult to clean coals. The test data have also been used to develop guidelines for the design of coal flotation columns and to validate existing scale-up procedures.

Increased emphasis on industrial pollution control has intensified investigation of waste treatment technology for methods of reducing the amount of pollutants discharged by industry. The mining and mineral processing industry can point to a record of considerable accomplishment in the field of wastewater treatment and reclamation because these operations are so frequently an integral part of the entire operation of an ore dressing facility. This is amply demonstrated by metal producers in the arid regions of the Southwest where water shortages require maximum use of available water. For example, the copper industry in Arizona during 1960 employed an estimated 184 billion gallons of water of which 87% was reused water. (1) Only 0.0003% was discharged to streams and the remainder was consumed by evaporation (8%) and seepage (5%). The most severe pollution problem facing the mining and ore processing industry today is that resulting from acid mine drainage. This problem is largely associated with the mining of coal although it occurs to a lesser degree with the mining of other materials. The degradation of streams by acid mine drainage in the vicinity' of the Appalachian coal fields has been widely publicized and a major effort is underway to determine the best means of correcting this situation. Other forms of pollution from mining operations are less well-known, but it is anticipated that improved or advanced waste treatment techniques will be required for segments of the industry to comply with new pollution control regulations. The current emphasis on redefining hazardous levels for heavy metals and various chemicals with regard to the total environment will in all likelihood lead to tighter discharge controls in some cases. Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag’s (LKAB) Konsuln iron ore mine, located just south of the famous Kiruna iron ore mine in Malmfälten in northern Sweden inside the Arctic Circle, was developed as a test mine between 2018 and 2020 for the Sustainable Underground Mining (SUM) project [1]. Besides functioning as a test mine, Konsuln also contributes to ore production. The existing mine ventilation system was designed for the current production rate of 0.8 Mtpa using conventional diesel machines. The design was created by Kiruna mine ventilation team, Stina Klemo and Joakim Jonasson, in cooperation with a consultant, Tomas Bolsöy from EOL Vent Mining AB. There is a plan to increase this rate to between 1.8 and 3 Mtpa in the future, and this requires the primary fans to be upgraded. Therefore, a study was carried out to determine whether using ventilation on demand (VOD) could avoid this fan upgrade and reduce Konsuln’s ventilation and heating power costs in the future. The study also investigated whether using battery electric vehicles (BEVs) along with VOD or as a standalone strategy could further reduce these power costs. In addition, the study analyzed the suitability of heating power reduction strategies presently or previously used in Nordic countries and Canada to investigate potential additional strategies to reduce heating power cost, the largest portion of Konsuln’s ventilation and heating power costs.
