"The Chilean minerals industry faces a shortage of 27.000 new skilled professional by 2023. Enhancing the integration of women into the workforce is a possible solution. This study analyzes the state of women in the mining workforce over the past decade. Several key indicators are presented: percent in the workforce, salaries, career profiles, presence at management level, and participation in academia are studied. The study also analyzes the strategies used by government, industry, and universities to recruit and retain women for the minerals industry. The main results show that women represent 7.4% of the mining workforce in Chile and less than 1% of senior positions with a salary gap of approximately 30%. Systematically, women prefer professional programs in geology, chemistry, and environmental areas. The Chilean statistics are compared to data from the United States mining industry. INTRODUCTION The Chilean mining industry faces a significant shortage of professionals for the next decade which compromises competitiveness and productivity. The demand for human capital in mining depends on several factors. First, the age structure of workforce, which determines future retirement needs. Second, minerals market considerations, determining the amount and size of mining projects entering production in the coming years. Third, the evolution, positive or negative, of productivity, mainly driven by technology and innovation, and negatively affected by the declining ore grades. Finally, negative trends in lead times to production of mining projects, due to social opposition, changing regulations and other project contingencies, negatively affecting the demand for human capital. Regarding the supply of human capital, the fast increase in the technology level of the minerals industry and hence, the increase of technical qualification requirements of the human capital generates a rise in the time required for trade and university education of mining professionals, which may cause imbalances in the labor market. According to (Consejo Minero, 2014) human capital gap in Chile by 2023 will be around 27.000 workers for extractive, processing and maintenance jobs, which represents 14% of the current workforce (Figure 1)."

The use of a 25.4 mm diameter water-only hydrocyclone for separating fine-size (-150 µm), high-density (>4.5 g/cc) particles from similar-size, lower-density (2.65 glee) particles was investigated. It was found that a single-stage separation recovered nearly 90% of the heavy minerals (7.0 g/cc), while achieving a volume reduction of about 70%. The use of dense medium in a single stage improved volume reductions to 90% at similar heavy mineral recoveries. In addition, computer simulations of a three-stage circuit were performed, which showed that recoveries approaching 97% with volume reductions of 95% were possible.

Attrition milling, once employed exclusively for the dispersion of pigments, has in recent years found a host of new applications in the area of mineral processing and mineral-pigment production. Broadly categorized, attrition milling is divided into two classes, as defined by the machinery's function, vibratory milling and rotational milling. Each mill type has been defined as a variation on ball milling and the terms, "vibratory ball mill" and stirred ball mill" appear in the literature. The primary design differences between attrition and ball mills are: (1) a stationary canister (or shell) (2) smaller grinding media (3) grinder energy is motor limited rather than gravity limited (4) strong media/feed size dependance.

The lack of metrics to assess clamshell formation dredgeability limits the ability of engineers to predict the dredgeability of compact material and increases the risks associated with clamshell selection. Research is needed to develop metrics for predicting clamshell dredgeability. The objective of this paper is to evaluate possible metrics to predict the dredgeability of compact aggregates by hydraulically actuated clamshell dredges. Data on cylinder pressures and displacements, motor current, bucket tilt and cycle time (CT) were collected from a dredge. Work done and motor energy, potential metrics, were computed and their suitability in predicting dredgeability evaluated. Data analysis shows that; there is no correlation between tilt angle and work done or motor energy; a low correlation between CT and work done, and a strong correlation between CT and motor energy. Work done is a better measure of formation dredgeability, than motor energy, as it shows lower variability. However, in difficult digging conditions, work done alone does not accurately predict dredgeability. This work shows that, it is feasible to use cylinder pressures and motor signals data to predict dredgeability.

In this paper, we present design and implementation details of a fuzzy-behavior-based controller for an automated excavator. This robotic excavator must be equipped with sensors, actuators and an embedded control system. The excavator controller uses neural-networks to interpret forces and torques gathered from bucket mounted force sensors during the excavation process. Implementation details and experimental results using the fuzzy behavior based excavation controller are given for several excavation tasks. These excavation tasks demonstrate some of the complex skills that are essential for an autonomous mining excavator controller.

Since the petroleum crisis in 1973, charcoal1 is being considered one of the most important fuel for the Brazilian consumers, mainly for pellet's producers. In replacing fuel by charcoal mixed up with ore, obviously one of the first thing to be investigated is its influence in the product's quality. Special attention has been given to the metallurgical characteristics. This paper infocus the effect of increasing dosings of charcoal to the pellet's porosity and how other physical and metallurgical characteristics will be affected accordingly. This work was carried out using two different finesses of charcoal and dosing varied from 0.5 to 2.0%.

"Understanding ground control problems continues to remain a focus of the mining engineering community. To aid mine operators and engineers in identifying and responding to ground control issues, the Ground Observation System (GOS) is being developed. The GOS is an integrated, web-based graphical user interface that displays ground response data collected wirelessly from an underground mine. It presents data in an intuitive manner to assist mine personnel, who are on- or off-site, in quickly identifying hazardous areas. Geotechnical instrumentation will be connected to wireless transmitters that will relay data in real-time to a surface computer that stores the information in a database. The GOS website will then display the geotechnical data in graphical and tabular forms, as well as in conditionally formatted mine maps. Data from each measurement device will be able to be viewed in its entirety or within a time interval, and can be downloaded for further analysis. The ability of the GOS to quickly interpret and communicate mine hazards to personnel of varying technical ability should prove to be a useful tool in understanding ground control and thus improving mine safety.INTRODUCTION Computer-based data information centers that convey operating parameters and conditions are prevalent in modern underground mines. Today’s systems are popular in showing ventilation controls and monitoring equipment performance (Jyothi & Meena 2013). In ground control monitoring, Conover, Ross, and Bigby, 2010 have installed a wired telltale roof monitoring system that sends roof displacement data every ten minutes to a computer on the surface. The computer receives, stores, and displays the data in real time. Data can also be viewed remotely through a password protected internet connection. Additionally, an internet connection allowed for remote updates to the system which streamlined software development and maintenance by eliminating travel (Conover et al., 2010). Currently, no such system beyond Conover et al.’s design has been accomplished. The Ground Observation System (GOS) is being developed to fill the void of real-time geotechnical monitoring in underground mines. A wide array of data will be transmitted wirelessly and broadcasted to on- and off-site mine personnel through the internet. The GOS will incorporate geotechnical data from roof deformation, borehole scratch testing, photogrammetry, and seismic monitoring into one interface, all while achieving permissibility for the use in gaseous mines. As a result, a comprehensive view of rock movement due to mining will be available. The overall purpose of the GOS is to deliver warnings; to ensure reliable data is relayed to personnel for the identification of potential ground failures, provide mine engineers information to design more stable mines, and assist with further geotechnical research."

The oxide fraction of industrial zinc ash was characterized in terms of chemical and phase composition, leaching behavior in sulfuric acid solutions, and leaching thermal effect. The waste product contained about 68 percent zinc (Zn), 7 percent chlorine (Cl), 2 percent aluminum (Al) and less than 1 percent other metals, such as iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), calcium (Ca) and silicon (Si). It consisted mainly of zinc oxide contaminated with metallic zinc and zinc hydroxide chloride. The dissolution of metals from the zinc ash was determined for solid-to-liquid ratios ranging from 100 to 500 kg/m3, acid concentrations of 10 and 20 percent, and temperatures of 20 and 40 °C. Stirred ball mill feed used for ultra-fine grinding application requires fine size separation step in order to avoid over-grinding. This paper presents the selectivity curves obtained for oil shale and complex sulfide are using 460 mesh (30 micron) Derrick vibrating screen. Interestingly, the selectivity curves generated from the experimental data were monotonic increasing selectivity for oil shale but not monotonic increasing for sulfide ore. These non-monotonic increasing selectivity curves were similar to the mechanical air separator fishhook selectivity curves described by Luckie and Austin. A 2 stage classification in series model describing the fishhook selectivity curve has been used in proposing the classification mechanism for fine vibrating screens when heterogeneous multicomponent sulfide are undergoes size separation.

Dredging can be traced to early times where it may have been derived by the Phoenicians prior to the 4th century B.C. The first tangible design drawings of a bucket ladder (BL) dredge can be found in the collections of Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), which he produced when he was attempting to create better methods of channel and port dredging. The perfection of the system did not commence until after the invention of the steam engine in the early 1800's; providing the impetus to progress from man-powered mud mills, horse drawn along polders or dikes in the Netherlands, England, France and Germany, to steam-driven. In the 1860's following the various gold rushes in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Siberia and South America, with placers in particular, efforts were begun to apply mechanization to achieve deeper digging. There is a recording of a dredge being installed to mine gold in Montana in the 1860's but did not include a processing system. Then in the 1880's in New Zealand, some practical engineers developed a system that is said to be the first bucket ladder mining (BL/M) dredge for mining gold placers. In studies of the New Zealand gold dredging experience, it is estimated that some 500 dredges were built to mine gold between the 1880's and 1942. This paper summarizes results from an investigation into possibly the largest coal pillar failure in the USA. The newly opened coal mine worked an 3.35 m (11 ft) seam under overburden depth that ranged from 91 to 671m (300 to 2200 ft) . The mine main entries, and the enclosed pillars, experienced a massive slow squeeze. The squeeze could not be controlled and the mains were lost. A new set of mains were driven. Entry convergence (closure) measurements were carried out behind the advancing face to monitor stability. Pillar stresses were also measured under four different depths of overburden: 229.433, 472.579 m (750,1420,1550, and 1900 ft). The strength of pillars in the new mains was calculated from the loads that triggered the failure in the old mains, using three pillar strength formulas. The stress measurements showed that the new pillars supported more load than their predicted strength, indicating that current strength formulas are inadequate under deep conditions.

Recent scientific studies by researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) presented the worst-case explosion pressures that can develop if a methane-air mixture of a certain composition and dimension accumulates and ignites within a sealed area of a mine. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) issued its final rule on sealing of abandoned areas which considers potential explosion pressures and the risk of achieving the necessary conditions. The new MSHA seals regulation has increased the pressure design criteria an order of magnitude beyond the old standard of 140 kPa (20 psi) to 800 kPa (120 psi). However, there still are major knowledge gaps pertaining to seals and sealed areas including: (1) the composition of the sealed area atmosphere and how it changes in time and space, (2) explosion pressures that might actually develop within sealed areas, (3) engineering procedures to follow when designing seals and seal installations, and (4) guidelines to manage the atmosphere within sealed areas with monitoring or inertization. NIOSH has initiated a seals research program with collaborators from Safety in Mines Testing and Research Station (SIMTARS) in Australia, West Virginia University (WVU), the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), and USACE. Highlights of progress so far include: (1) construction of a gas explosion tube at Lake Lynn Laboratory for studying large methane-air explosions, (2) computer simulation of the fluid dynamics of high pressure methane-air explosions, (3) development of seal analysis methods considering construction materials, reinforcement and the seal foundation, and (4) development and testing of innovative seal designs that utilize inexpensive, readily-available rock rubble to resist high explosion pressures. NIOSH researchers aim to provide sound engineering guidelines to better address the new MSHA seal regulations. The phosphorus journey begins with the extraction of primary phosphorus in the form of phosphate in apatite through openpit mining and, in some rare cases, underground mining methods. The ores are processed in beneficiation plants to remove impurities before the phosphate rock concentrate is either sold on the open market or converted into phosphoric acid in downstream chemical production facilities by the wet acid process or thermal phosphorus routes. These can in turn be converted into fertilizers, as well as used in the food and electronic industries. The advent of the EV battery has given rise to a new use for purified phosphoric acid in the production of lithium ferro phosphorus (LFP) cathode material for EV battery cathode assemblies. The production of LFP relies on raw materials such as lithium carbonate, lithium hydroxides, iron salts and purified phosphoric acid.

The economics of a mineral-processing circuit is dependent on the numerous sensors that are critical to optimization and control systems. When a sensor goes off calibration, it results in errors that can have a severe impact on plant economics. Classical statistical approaches fail to detect when errors are “subtle,” unless they grow and become large enough to be “gross,” whereas methods based on signal processing and artificial intelligence fail in dealing with the complexity of process fluctuations. Due to the sheer volume of sensors, undetected errors are not remedied until the next calibration, which on average are a year apart across all industries [1]. This research aims to detect such subtle errors (2 percent bias) in shorter time spans of about a month — rather than wait for errors to grow — using innovative data-mining techniques and algorithms.

Interwest Mining Company has been collecting geologic data within the last decade in preparation for underground mining of extensive coal reserves in its Bridger Coal property in southwestern Wyoming. During a preliminary data collection program in 2000, Interwest Mining completed geologic investigations, including surface mapping, drilling, aerial photography, rock testing, and limited groundwater investigations. Core from 12 exploration boreholes in the area of interest was tested to determine the mechanical properties of the coal seam and the immediate roof and floor for evaluation of the feasibility of underground mining. Geologic investigations identified the presence of one 7-to-17-ft-thick coal seam throughout the reserve under 1400 ft of cover. During a geotechnical feasibility study in 2002, the authors reviewed available data while completing comparative analyses identifying critical deficiencies in these data. The study projected moderate-to-difficult mining conditions, considering the weak nature of near-seam strata and depth of cover, and thus recommended limiting the longwall reserves to an overburden depth of less than 900 ft. These shallow remaining reserves were located at depths within regional mining experience to justify longwall mining methods. Based on a critical examination of available data, Bridger proceeded with more detailed data collection to improve understanding of the depositional and structural setting of the reserve, hydrogeologic conditions, overburden strength, and premining stress conditions. Additional data was collected during 2003 and 2004 field programs. Since 2003, Bridger has had the opportunity to observe ground behavior in a series of up to 1200-1600-ft- long rectangular openings created during highwall mining. These narrow unsupported openings remained stable in the short term in large areas but the overburden subsided locally in the long-term depending on geologic and panel layout designs. These localized subsidence events allowed an examination of in-situ coal strength based on back analyses of stress. The unextracted highwall areas near Ramp 17 provided an ideal location to access the underground reserves using a 6-entry set of mains. The existing north-south oriented longwall layout for the Bridger Coal was selected by Bridger to maximize resource recovery from the D41 reserves while considering operational and geotechnical constraints. At 45-degrees deviation from preexisting joints and mild horizontal stress field, this orientation was considered beneficial for overall stability while using both sets of joints for facilitating the caving process. The present layout utilizes pillars on 80- to 90- by 200-ft centers, 17-ft entry spans and 750-ft wide longwall panels (Figure 1). Gate pillars are on wide spacings and are intended to act as abutment-abutment pillars to limit strata deformation over the gateroads during longwall mining.

"Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating the unique pillar stability issues associated with room-and-pillar mining in dipping underground stone mines. The objective of this paper is to study the post-blast impact in and around a pillar, using microseismic monitoring. To accomplish this, a microseismic monitoring system has been installed at a dipping underground stone mine in central Pennsylvania. The microseismic system is comprised of 18 uniaxial accelerometers; 12 sensors are installed in a single pillar and 6 sensors are installed in the surrounding area. More than 4,400 microseismic events have been located near the study pillar following the blasts. The number of triggers increased significantly following the blast, and the trigger rate in the first five minutes was 60 triggers per minute and three triggers per minute over the next three hours. The processing of high-quality triggers indicated a large number of low magnitude microseismic events near the blasting face. The event locations were identified more accurately by using a 3D-velocity model, with an average 9 m expected location accuracy for this array calculated using the system data. Seismicity was absent from the core of the pillar, but significant numbers of events were found following cutter roof along a crosscut as it was developed as well as in the location of a rib failure event. Additionally, the events were located in the roof, showing high number of microseismic events within 0–10 m of the roof line compared to 10–30 m above the roof line.INTRODUCTIONGround control stability is essential to any mining operation for ensuring mineworker safety and health and preventing catastrophic failures of underground structures. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted research in stone pillar design and has established fundamental pillar design guidelines for the underground stone industry, which resulted in the development of the S-Pillar program (Esterhuizen et al., 2011; Esterhuizen and Murphy, 2018). However, the data that makes up the S-Pillar database consists of shallow depth, flat-lying, single-level mining operations. Therefore, to expand this dataset and to develop guidelines for challenging conditions such as dipping and multi-level mines, NIOSH is currently conducting detailed pillar response investigations at mines with these characteristics. The study is being conducted using multiple research approaches, including seismic modeling and tomography, numerical modeling (Sears et al., 2019), stress monitoring, and LiDAR-based laser scanning (Slaker, Murphy, and Winfield, 2019). This paper discusses the findings from the microseismic monitoring system installed at the Pleasant Gap Mine, a steeply dipping underground limestone mine in central Pennsylvania."

Based on the research background of 1303 working face return air roadway in Jinyuan Zhaoxian Mine, Shaanxi Province, a method of determining the reasonable spacing of boreholes is proposed based on the stress transfer degree of coal above and between boreholes, combined with the law of plastic zone and energy evolution by theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. After drilling pressure relief, the average daily energy of microseismic events decreased by 70%, and those with microseismic energy greater than 104 J decreased by 99.2%. The research has a strong guiding significance and research value for determining the reasonable distance of borehole pressure relief.

The calculation of the liberation spectrum in the product from continuous milling operations is a problem of considerable importance and is difficult to solve because the population balance equation must be integrated in two-dimensional space. Complete solutions require the estimation of a large number of parameters unless a structural model of the ore texture can be used. A very simplified textural model based on the use of the modified Andrews-Mika diagram and the PARGEN simulation of multi-phase particles has been formulated and is used to simulate the behavior of a continuously operating laboratory ball mill. A sensitivity analysis for this mill has been done to show the likely effect of model approximations on the predicted liberation spectrum which will be measured.

Considerable potential for metallic mineral resources in the lower Proterozoic rock of the Lake Superior region exists (Mudrey and Kalliokoski, in press). Most of the identified resources occur within a 2.0- to 1.9-b.y.-old lithotectonic assemblage characterized by extensive sedimentary strata in the north and thick volcanic se- quences in the south, all deposited on a two-terrane, composite basement of Archean age (DeMattis, 1989). Since the late 1960s, measured resources of nearly 90 Mt (100 million st) of typical volcanogenic massive sulfide at eight localities in Wisconsin have been discovered. The largest of these, near Crandon, contains about 61 Mt (67 million st) of ore averaging 5.6% zinc, 1.1 % copper, and 0.5% lead. Although none of these properties are in production, estimates by Mudrey (1978) suggest that Wisconsin could become a major contributor of newly mined zinc and copper in the United States. These discoveries and uranium and gold discoveries in the Canadian Precambrian are what have led to in- creased metallic mineral exploration throughout the northern half of Wisconsin (Fig. 1). In this chapter, we discuss the geology and legal framework in which the Proterozoic volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits were found. Exploration activities for other metals have generally been negative, and have been background noise for the legislative activities related to the massive sulfide discoveries. Uranium exploration has been consistently negative, although several different environments have been assessed. Other metal discoveries. such as titanium/vanadium, have been subeconomic.
