A micro-scale investigation was carried out by applying atomic force microscopy (AFM) to study in situ the adsorption of various collectors, i.e., oleic acid, octanohydroxamic acid (HA), and salicylhydroxamic acid (SHA), on bastnaesite in aqueous solutions. The obtained AFM images show that the surface morphology of bastnaesite changes greatly after it comes into contact with the solutions of the collectors, suggesting that all these collectors can effectively adsorb onto bastnaesite. Increasing temperature can facilitate the adsorption of oleic acid onto bastnaesite. Results from attenuated total reflectance–Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (ATR-FTIR) also show that all of these collectors adsorb strongly onto bastnaesite, with strong absorbance spectra being detected. The ATR-FTIR results confirm those obtained by AFM. In general, hydroxamic acid collectors (HA and SHA) adsorb onto bastnaesite mainly in the form of insoluble metal hydroxamate. This specific adsorption mechanism explains that a high selectivity with a moderate collectivity will be achieved with a hydroxamic acid collector for the flotation of bastnaesite.

Minerals Appraisers/Valuers often find great difficulty or failure in attempting to employ the Sales Comparison Approach to the Market Value Appraisal of development and operating stage mineral properties. An important factor generally overlooked is a comparison of net operating income (NOI) margins on a per-unit-of-production basis between mineral properties, whether these be demonstrated or forecast margins. NOI margins can vary greatly between mines or quarries that are producing similar products. Ultimately, the expected NOI margin determines what a buyer is willing to pay for an income producing property. Common criticisms of the sales comparison approach by minerals appraisers are introduced. These are counterbalanced by raising some issues in the way the inputs for the Income Approach are usually derived by minerals appraisers, and by review of some conspicuous examples of the much too common misuse or abuse of the income approach in market value minerals appraisals. Example transaction analyses and sales comparison analyses are used to demonstrate the author?s methodology for adjusting units of resource in his transaction adjustment tables (see APPENDIX). The examples are used as the basis for discussion of ways to employ adjustments for operating economics and many other factors, while cautioning about the potential for double counting. The conclusions include a recommendation that minerals appraisers attempt to apply at least two of the three valuation approaches when appraising the market or fair value of development and operating stage mineral properties, the two being the sales comparison and income approaches.

The use of column flotation was considered for the ?reverse flotation? of iron ore, where the gangue (quartz) was recovered in the froth product. This use of the froth for carrying the gangue mineral rather than carrying the valuable concentrate significantly changes the operational requirements of the column. The objective of this work was to determine which of several column flotation technologies would be most suitable for this type of flotation operation. Studies were carried out using both the Jameson column and the Deister column. Comparative results are presented that show the capabilities of both column types in this application relative to conventional Wemco flotation cells. Columns were demonstrated to have grade-recovery performance superior to what could be achieved with conventional cells. Two-stage flotation with the columns could produce a concentrate that was up to 70.2% Fe at 87.5% iron recovery, compared to 70.4% Fe at only 77.7% iron recovery for four stages of flotation in conventional cells. It was shown to be particularly important to operate the columns to recover a maximum of the quartz gangue into the froth. It was noted that there are often problems in scale-up of laboratory columns to plant scale, because the increase in height and the decrease in the ratio of height to diameter at the larger scale allows more axial mixing and bubble coalescence, both of which degrade the column performance. Horizontal baffling was shown to improve column performance by reducing axial mixing and breaking up large bubbles, and so the use of such baffles in the reverse flotation application was investigated.

R.K. Leininger, N.R. Hasenmueller, and D.D. Carr The content of the paper by V. Rajaram does not fulfill the expectations of the title. But Rajaram submitted the article in October 1983, and he could not have foreseen the numerous developments that would occur before his paper was published more than two years later. Nevertheless, Rajaram failed to mention the interest in oil shale development in southern Indiana beginning in late 1979 and continuing through the present as a result of special financial encouragement of three oil shale projects in May and August 1984 by the Indiana Energy Development Board and the Indiana Corp. for Science and Technology. A session at the 1985 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium in Lexington, KY, Nov. 18-20, 1985, gave the current status of oil shale developments in the eastern United States. Speakers at this session reported on the three Indiana projects. First, Gary D. Aho, Cliffs Engineering Inc., spoke on a feasibility study by Cliffs Engineering and Allis Chalmers for a site-specific pilot plant using the Allis Chalmers process. The plant site is in Clark County, IN, on property of the Midwest Energy Resources Co. The project is funded by $240,908 each from the Indiana Energy Development Board/Corp. for Science and Technology (EDB/CST) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) and $120,454 from the corporate sponsors (total $602,270). Completion is scheduled for mid-1986. Next, Edwin M. Piper, Stone and Webster Engineering Corp., discussed the American Syn-Crude/Indiana Oil Shale Project. This effort followed the completion of two smaller projects funded by the Indiana EDB/ CST: "Testing of Indiana Oil Shale in a Petrosix Pilot Plant" (total funding by EDB/CST at $50,000) and "Assessment of the Petrosix Process for an Indiana Shale Oil Plant" (total funding by EDB/CST at $100,000). The status at the time of the report at the Oil Shale Symposium was that a request for an extension of time for securing nonfederal support had been submitted to the US Synfuels Corp. The proposal included building an 11-m (36-ft) diam retort in southeastern Indiana to process the New Albany Shale and to produce 366 m3 (2300 bbl) of shale oil per day by the PETROSIX process. The Indiana EDB/CST had contracted with Stone and Webster at $401,100 from EDB/CST and $245,835 from Stone and Webster for activities to advance the project in the negotiations with Synfuels Corp. At the time of the report, this project was the only eastern oil shale proposal that was still on the agenda of the Synfuels Corp. As a result of Congressional action in late December 1985, federal support from the Synfuels Corp. is no longer possible. Finally, Victor H. Carr, Eastern Shale Research Corp., described his firm's project, which is jointly supported by DOE ($227,749) and the Indiana EDB/ CST ($73,850) and is entitled "Feasibility Study to Determine Suitability of an In-Situ Process to Recover Hydrocarbons from Eastern Shale." An area in Scott County, IN, had been chosen, but not a specific 9 x 15-m (30 x 50-ft) site. One burn of a small in situ retort is contemplated as part of the project. Besides these three projects, several reports on shale research were presented. Joseph Damukaitis, American Syn-Crude Corp., reported that a pilot plant using the hydrogenation-extraction (H-E) process (described at the 1984 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium) was 94% built and would go through shakedown with oil shale but would then shift mechanical devices to process coal mine waste. Current status of research on the HYTORT process was then presented by Raymond C. Rex, Jr. Oil shale beneficiation research at the University of Alabama/Minerals Research Institute was reported by R. Bruce Tippin. Scott D. Carter discussed continued research on fluidized-bed retort¬ing of shale at the Kentucky Center for Energy Research Laboratory. Carl E. Roosmagi of DOE, Morgantown, reported on the oil shale research at the Morgantown Energy Technology Center (METC) laboratory. Henry J. Gomberg, Ann Arbor Nuclear Inc., discussed "Radiation Combined with Donor Solvents for Extraction and Up-Grading of Kerogen." Aurora M. Rubel and coauthor Eileen Davis presented results of research at the Kentucky Center for Energy Research Laboratory under the title "The Effect of Shale Particle Size on the Products from the Bench Scale Fixed Bed Steam Pyrolysis of Kentucky Sunbury Shale." Lastly, Maria Rockwell, Technical University of Nova Scotia, presented "Processing and Up-Grading of Low Grade Nova Scotia Oil Shale for Potential Use." A review of shale oil prospects by Gerald Parkinson in Chemical Engineering for Feb. 3, 1986, covers both western and eastern projects and includes a report that the US DOE is funding a few relatively small projects; most of the fiscal 1986 budget of $12 million for shale oil is for fundamental research. Projects include a $3.2 million three-year contract with Hycrude Corp. (Chicago) for development of the HYTORT process and a $1.2 million three-year contract with the University of Alabama's Mineral Resources Institute on beneficiation of eastern oil shale by froth flotation. The report incorrectly states that current projects include a total investment of $466 million in a pair of 18-month technical and economic feasibility studies for proposed projects in southern Indiana. The concept of using fluid dense media to separate heavy ore constituents from the lighter gangue dates back to 1858, when it was patented by Sir Henry Bessemer. Its use in coal did not begin until after 1917, however, when Chance invented a process (which bears his name) in which lighter coal floats in a suspension of fine sand in water while heavier refuse sinks. Conklin used fine magnetite in suspension as a medium for floating anthracite in 1922, DuPont designed a plant employing organic liquids in 1936, and Belknap used a solution of calcium chloride (which Bessemer had suggested, among other media) in 1937. Separation of magnetic media by magnetic separators from the suspensions in which they were carried was introduced in a Butler Brothers ore concentrator pilot plant in 1937. The media first used were crushed steel and various grades of ferrosilicon. Since 1940, when American Cyanamid used magnetic separators to recover and clean magnetite in a coal washing circuit, virtually all heavy medium circuits have been of that type. As long as static baths are employed, as they are in the processes above, coal smaller than 9.5 mm or 6.4 mm cannot be cleaned economically in heavy medium. The settling velocities of the fine material are very low, and consequently the time required to separate the lighter coal from the heavier refuse becomes excessive. In addition, stray currents in the vessel and the upward velocities induced to keep media solids in suspension affect the finer solids to the degree that physical size becomes a more important factor than specific gravity.

Recently the operating philosophy at concentrators processing platinum bearing ores has started to move from a recovery dominated system to one in which the production of high grade concentrates at the expense of some recovery would provide greater benefits in the further upgrading of the platinum group minerals (PGM). The low grades usually obtained are associated with the presence of naturally floatable talcaceous gangue minerals in all PGM ores. Polysaccharide depressants such as guar gum and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) are used to improve the grades of the concentrates. Recent testwork has shown that the use of high depressant concentrations can prevent any naturally floatable gangue from reporting to the concentrate. The only gangue present in the concentrates would be due to its entrainment in the froth. Under these conditions much higher grades can be achieved. The sulphide minerals themselves, however, become susceptible to depression at high depressant concentrations. This work examines how the recovery of sulphide minerals in two Merensky ores was affected by the type and concentration of the collector in the presence of high depressant concentration (500 g/t) and that the response of the sulphide minerals was also dependent on the type of depressant used (guar or CMC).

In this study, the cyclonic static microbubble flotation column (FCSMC) was investigated for fluorite beneficiation. The structure and principle of the specially designed column are described. Fluorite samples from the tungsten separation tailings of the Shizhuyuan Mine, Chenzhou, Hunan Province, P.R. China, were tested using a small-scale continuous flotation test unit, and concentrates with a fluorite grade higher than 98% were obtained. One rougher and three cleaner stages in the FCSMC achieved the same separation performance as one rougher and eight cleaners in conventional flotation cells. This greatly simplified the flotation circuit and reduced operating costs.

The Peñasquito deposit in Mexico is one of the largest grassroots precious metal discoveries to be developed in recent years. Goldcorp Inc. acquired the gold-silver-lead-zinc property with the acquisition of Glamis in 2006. The company has since committed US$1.5 billion to construct the mine, mill and associated facilities. The first of two 50-kt/d (55,000-stpd) mill and flotation lines is currently being commissioned while engineering and construction continues on the second line. A high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR) will ultimately take total throughput to 130 kt/d (142,000 stpd). The Peñasquito property is located in the northeast corner of Zacatecas state, Mexico. The elevation of the property averages 1,900 m (6,200 ft) above sea level and it is situated in a wide east-west valley. Except for one small outcrop (Peñasquito), the area is covered by up to 30 m (98 ft) of alluvium.

Magnetic liners can improve the performance of ball mills by increasing grinding efficiency, extending service life, and reducing maintenance costs. Despite their importance, the fundamental understanding and the quantitative investigation on the effects of the magnetic liners has not been addressed in the literature. This paper addresses this gap by studying charge motion, and how the use of a magnetic liner affects the breakage mechanism of the mill, using discrete element method (DEM) modeling and the Hertz-Mindlin contact model with relative velocity dependent (RVD) rolling friction. Charge motion was modeled under different mill speeds. Compared to conventional steel and rubber liners, the charge motion in the magnetic liner mill was predominantly cascading. Quantitative analysis of the energy dissipation within the mill was conducted to investigate mill breakage. Regardless of speed, over 50% of the total energy dissipation in the magnetic liner mill was in the form of abrasion and attrition. The results highlighted the appeal of magnetic liners in secondary and regrinding application, where abrasion and attrition are considered more efficient in the fine material breakage, and where impact is ideally minimized to reduce mill wear. A number of experiments were conducted to assess the effect of different model parameters on the performance of the magnetic liner mill. The highest abrasion/attrition intensity was observed with high values of the model parameters namely the restitution coefficient, static friction coefficient, and rolling friction coefficient.

Primary cementing is the process of placing cement in the annulus between the casing and the formations exposed to the wellbore. Portland cement was first used in 1903 in the Lopoc Field in California for well cementing. Since then, the major objective of primary cementing has always been to provide zonal isolation in oil, gas and water wells, i.e. to exclude fluid(s) in one zone from another zone in the well. To achieve this objective a hydraulic seal must be created between the casing and cement and between the cement and the formations, while at the same time preventing fluid channels in the cement sheath. This requirement makes primary cementing the most important operation performed on a well. Without complete isolation in the wellbore, the well may never reach its full producing potential. The industry knowledge on cements relies heavily on empirical data, but the chemistry, physics and structure of cement are not fully understood yet. The strength of concrete can be increased essentially by reducing its porosity through optimizing the size distribution of its components and filling the residual porosity of the hydrated cement phase with inorganic fillers. This approach has successfully utilized in different ways and several technologies for placing high performance oil and gas well cements have been developed over the last few decades. There are reasons to believe that the next source of improvement will lie in the fine-tuning of the hydrates themselves and of the different parameters that drive short (ionic?covalent bonding) and long (ionic correlation) interactions.

To gather additional field data from the western United States, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) installed an array of field instrumentation at a longwall coal mine in Central Utah. The purpose of this field site was to monitor ground movement and changes in pressure during mining where conditions include massive, stiff overburden and relatively deep cover. To accomplish this, field instrumentation was installed in the two-entry gate road between the fifth and sixth longwall panel in the current mining district.

INTRODUCTION Mica Dam is located on the Columbia River just downstream of the "big bend" of the Columbia, where it leaves the Rocky Mountain Trench and begins to flow southwards, approximately 85 miles north of Revelstoke, B.C. (Fig.l). The dam was built as one of three Columbia River Treaty dams in British Columbia which regulate the flow of the river and provide flood control downstream in Washington and Oregon. In addition, the three Canadian dams make possible greatly increased power generation at existing power plants in the United States and further development along the Columbia and its tributaries in British Columbia. History Mica Dam, constructed during the period 1967 to 1973, is a zoned earthfill embankment 650 feet high, which has 12,000,000 acre feet of live storage and an available head of 550 feet. Power intakes which would serve either a six-unit surface or underground plant were incorporated into the design and construction of the right abutment of the dam (Fig. 2). Prior to 1971 alternative 2500 MW capacity surface and underground powerplant arrangements were studied. Cost estimates for the two alternatives were the same within the limits of estimating procedures. However, it was believed there was a certain continuing risk in locating a surface plant at the toe of a steep canyon wall. Resource estimation for the West Leeville deposit is prepared using a conventional explicit approach. The geologic model is developed using interpretive methods based on visual logging. Grade shells are then prepared at low and high grade cutoffs. The low grade shell includes material of interest (Au > 0.010opt), while the high grade shell is developed slightly below the economic cutoff grade for mining. Grade estimates are made within these boundaries. This paper documents a conditional simulation study to evaluate the uncertainty contributed by both the grade shells and grade estimates. Multiple realizations are generated for the grade shells and the grades. The full combinatorial of realizations are merged to assess the uncertainty and the relative contribution of the grade shell and grades.

Collaboration between education providers is the key to long-term sustainability and improved quality in mining education. The mining industry is now, more than ever, an industry doing business on a global basis. Staff are recruited by global mining companies in many different countries and can find themselves deployed anywhere in the world. The mining engineer of tomorrow must be willing to take on this international challenge, and must be educated to a level where he or she has a comprehensive grounding in technical aspects of mining engineering, but also a well-founded appreciation of management, social, environmental and cultural issues which may be encountered around the world. In order to deliver such an education, academic providers must collaborate at both a national and international level. This paper provides an overview of progress that has been made in Australia through the national joint venture ? Mining Education Australia (MEA). Supported by the mining industry in Australia, through the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA), MEA has now been operational since 2007 and is seeing the development of a range of innovative courses and delivery methods, together with a high level of staff co-operation across the country. MEA has also now commenced some international teaching initiatives which are seen as a catalyst for a far greater degree of international collaboration in the future. Such activity is not only to the benefit of the students who are taught by experts from around the world, but it also ensures that individual university programs remain viable in terms of staffing numbers and financial performance. The paper also presents some statistics on recent upward trends in mining engineering student numbers from around the world, in response to the global shortage of mining engineers.

Introduction Elevated zinc concentrations are observed in groundwater within alluvium adjacent to Silver Creek east of Park City, Utah. The study area is located in a small valley one and one-half miles northeast of Park City, Utah in Summit County, Utah (Figure 1). Although surface water concentrations in Silver Creek are typically less than 1 mg/l, groundwater concentrations have been measured as high as 85 mg/l in a near neutral pH environment. The elevated zinc concentrations in groundwater result from several factors including: (1) dissolution of zinc from tailings exposed at the surface and within the alluvium, (2) oxidizing conditions created by surface/ground-water exchange, and (3) ideal geochemical conditions for the dissolution of zinc-containing minerals. These ideal conditions include readily soluble minerals, available anions for complexation, and lack of available surface adsorption sites.

Flotation separation and recovery of value minerals from ores containing fibrous silicate minerals are known to be quite challenging. Earlier studies have established that the metallurgical challenges (poor selectivity and recovery, high energy consumption, etc.) arise from the impact of the fibrous minerals (with high aspect ratio) on pulp rheology, which was found be rather complex. The complex rheological behavior of ore suspensions containing particles with high aspect ratio and its influence on flotation outcome are investigated in this study. Flotation tests and rheological measurements were carried out with both ores (containing fibrous minerals) and a model system comprising nylon fibers (chemically inert) added to a copper ore that had no fibrous mineral. These studies allowed the determination of contributions of physical properties of the fiber to pulp rheological behavior. Optical microscopy images of the fiber pulp indicated that the fibers entangled to form two levels of microstructures: two-dimensional (2D) aggregates under semi-dilute (< 20% solids) conditions and three-dimensional (3D) microstructures at concentrations > 30% solids. The yield stress (σ) values determined for the fiber pulp were logarithmically related to the volume fraction of the 2D/3D structures. The relationships developed here for different ARs showed that the yield stress of a flotation pulp changes with respect to shape, size, and the concentrations of the microstructures. Implications to the effects of such entangle networks on selectivity of flotation separation are discussed.

On the 2nd of June 2007 SELI S.p.A. started the excavation of Beles Tailrace Tunnel (Ethiopia). The new 8,07 m diameter DS Universal TBM utilized for the tunnel excavation was manufactured by SELI S.p.A. and allowed the installation of 30 cm thick concrete lining, contemporaneously with the excavation of 7,200 m of tunnel. The greatest part of the tunnel alignment was excavated in hard and sound basal-tic rocks. The paper describes the main steps of the tunnelling operations which led to a remarkably rapid excavation, with a peak production of 36 m / day and a final break-through achieved 46 days ahead of the contractual deadline. Furthermore the paper describes the work and logistic organization that was set up to efficiently perform the mechanized excavation in the very remote area of the project.
