Epithermal Ag-Au deposits form at low to moderate temperatures in near-surface environments. Historically, these deposits have been the source of high-grade ores. Increases in the market prices for gold and silver make lower-grade ores economically viable when available in large tonnages. Both the high-grade and bulk-tonnage ores are a consequence of the same processes, and general models of epithermal systems can be useful in the search for new precious-metal resources. A detailed study of deposits at Round Mountain, Nevada; Balei, Russia; Creede, Colorado; Guanajuato, Mexico; and Chanarcillo, Chile, indicates that the hydrodynamics of the fluid systems as determined by fracture geometries, the permeability, and composition of the host rocks are the key factors in the creation of both high-grade and bulk-tonnage epithermal deposits. End-member models that explain the range of observed deposit characteristics are: (1) the hot-springs deposition model; (2) the stacked-cell convection model (where mineral deposition occurs laterally along the interface of two partially separated fluid reservoirs); and, (3) the closed-cell convection model (where deposition occurs in vertical zones due to the relatively unimpeded vertical flow of hydrothermal fluids). Boiling and fluid mixing appear to be agents of precious-metal deposition with the self-sealing of the hydrothermal system being an important adjunct to boiling. Imaginative application of model concepts in exploration has led and can lead to the discovery of new high-grade and/or bulk-tonnage precious-metal deposits.

Exposure to hand-arm vibration (HAV) among the labor force in the mining industry can result in permanent vibration diseases such as behavioral disorders, visual impairment, osteoporosis, pain (mostly in the hands, wrists, and shoulders), circulatory system disorders, and malnutrition. In this study, the vibration exposure of excavator operators working regularly in 25 different natural stone quarries was measured. In addition, the relationship between vibration exposure and rock properties was investigated. Gloved and ungloved vibration measurements were performed and revealed that antivibration gloves reduce excavator operators’ vibration exposure by 7.10–25.95%. Samples from each quarry were characterized with rock mechanics tests. The correlations between the hand-arm vibration measurements and the natural stone physical–mechanical properties (uniaxial compressive strength, Shore hardness, Knoop hardness, apparent density and total porosity) were determined to be over 70%. One finding of the study was that the health risk in excavators cannot be reduced sufficiently by the sole use of antivibration gloves. Furthermore, the excavation of any rock with a Knoop hardness above 121 is associated with an 81% risk of HAV. To increase awareness of the danger of vibration exposure for natural stone miners, training programs should be provided, and technical and operational changes should be implemented.

The economics of open pit mine design are dictated by three basic elements: cut-off grade, stripping ratio and slope angle. Although these elements are functions of a number of independent parameters, they are interrelated through their influence on the overall economics. The optimum slope angle is the most uncertain element to determine, because rock mass properties are difficult to obtain. However, for preliminary estimation, the slope angle can be determined from the relationship between the probability of failure and the safety factor. The economics of the slope selected will depend on a profit versus risk judgment. In this paper, the author will present an actual case of application of this postulate.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating a systems approach to metals recovery from leach liquors produced by in situ leach mining techniques. A successful in situ leaching process requires a thorough under-standing of the complex interrelationships that exist between leaching chemistry and metals recovery. Laboratory research is addressing these interrelationships in the solution mining of a copper oxide deposit. Laboratory tests have been conducted to gather baseline data related to the design and operation of continuous leaching-solvent extraction-electrowinning circuits. This paper addresses the findings of the baseline studies. Specific results include the characterization of simulated in situ leach liquors produced by leaching chrysocolla and chrysocolla-atacamite-bearing copper ores. Metal recovery procedures, utilizing four commercial solvent extraction reagents, are also characterized, and potentially troublesome leach liquor contaminants that may complicate waste management procedures are identified.

Major scientific discoveries cannot be programmed. New or frontier technology, however, can and should be planned. It is the vital force underlying the business strategy of a vigorous and profitable mining and metals company. Generally, a radical departure from existing technology is required to 1) Enhance the competitive value of ore reserves, i.e., to turn low grade or marginal reserves into competitive reserves. 2) To increase yield and decrease costs. 3) To decrease investment. 4) To increase mine life. 5) To improve product quality to meet market demands. The very definition of frontier technology implies that it is so different that the old plant, if already in use, will not be directly suitable to use the new technology. Therefore, a priori, we know that the commercialization of frontier technology would very likely involve new investment. The recommended technique of economic and technical analyses, I propose to call "Success Analysis.'' Simply stated, it forces us, by step- by-step procedure, to ask "what is needed to succeed in this particular project." Therefore, the first step is to identify what is meant by "success." The definition of "success" requires an agreement with top management or sponsors of the project as to what constitutes "success" in their minds as contrast to the technical people perception of "success." In general, top management would define success as meeting: 1) The technical objectives, i.e., technology being developed would produce the desired product at the acceptable quality. 2) Financial objectives, i.e., when commercialized, the project's capital cost, operating costs and return on investment are better than the projects they would normally fund. The return has to be better because new technology is inherently riskier. 3) Marketing objectives in that the project will produce product of acceptable quality in timely manner, i.e., scale-up to commercial plant would not cause undue delays in start-up and that large fix-up expenditure would not be required to protect the projected return on the investment. Many projects are started in the laboratory to develop "Frontier Technology" in mineral processing. Most of these efforts are never commercialized. There are many causes of these failures. The major causes are listed below: 1) Inadequate communication with the sponsors of the project so that project objectives are defined and agreed to by all. 2) Ill-defined technical problems. 3) Incomplete development of technology. This has two major components: a. Incorrect scale-up and engineering. b. Inadequate start-up and maintenance planning. 4) Incomplete and over-optimistic process economics. 5) Lack of understanding of the future behavior of the marketplace. 6) Failure to complete R&D effort by the time it is needed. 7) Incorrect projections of human resources required; that is, technical, managerial and operating. 8) Lack of realistic forecast of the expenditures required for commercialization of the R&D effort. These pitfalls can be avoided by comprehensive planning and the use of success analysis technique. The major elements in "Success Analysis" are: 1) Identification of the "need" for new technology. 2) Unbiased and complete scale-up engineering. 3) Acceptable economic feasibility with enough margin of error in the sale prices and operating costs to justify the inherent risks in frontier technology. 4) Timing for availability of investment capital and markets. Many failures in the development of frontier technology are preordained because the initial selection of the research project has been without adequate attention to the needs of the industry. Many very innovative hydrometallurgical processes for recovery of copper from concentrates were developed in the past twenty years. They have not adapted except to a very minor extent because they did not satisfy the success analysis criteria. "Diesel particulate matter (DPM) has been regulated by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration since 2002 in underground metal and nonmetal mines. To demonstrate regulatory compliance, DPM samples must be collected and later analyzed by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) 5040 standard method, but the FLIR Airtec DPM monitor can serve as a complementary engineering tool. The monitor is a handheld instrument that offers near-real-time measurements of elemental carbon (EC), which is a primary constituent of DPM. As part of an ongoing field study, the monitor was used to survey EC in an underground stone mine. This effort was aimed at determining spatial and temporal DPM variations in several key locations. The results of prolonged area monitoring—that is, lasting several hours — revealed that DPM concentrations were diluted substantially as air moved away from the primary production zone, but that concentrations could vary quite a bit in a single location from day to day and between seasons. DPM concentrations were generally lower in winter than in summer, which is consistent with increased natural ventilation airflows during winter. Using a modified sampling cassette, an attempt was also made to sensitize the Airtec monitor to allow for “spot-checking” of EC concentrations — that is, measurements made in several minutes. Preliminary field data showed that the sensitive cassette performed well in terms of providing accurate data that could be useful for rapid assessment of DPM. IntroductionDiesel particulate matter (DPM) is the solid fraction of the exhaust emissions from a diesel engine. It largely consists of elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) (Birch, 2003). The World Health Organization International Agency for Research on Cancer classified diesel exhaust, including DPM, as a carcinogen (World Health Organization, 2012). It is believed to cause and/or exacerbate respiratory illness upon inhalation, deposition and retention in lung tissue. Because DPM exists in both the micro- and nanoparticulate ranges, it can bypass typical autoimmune defense mechanisms that keep larger particles out of the respiratory system (Ristovski et al., 2012)."

I will not attempt to forecast either the future price of copper or the future growth of the copper industry; rather I would like to discuss the current trends experienced in the smelting and refining terms and conditions for sales and/or purchases of copper concentrates. A brief review of contract language and terms, together with a review of the common jargon, I believe, would be helpful. To accomplish this review, I will first list what I consider the four basic parts or sections of a basic ore contract and then illustrate basic terms with calculations.

Spectroscopic techniques are becoming increasingly popular for characterizing the interior of adsorbed layers of surfactants and polymers at solid- liquid interface as well as in the identification of com- pounds on mineral surfaces. This review encompasses the application of fluorescence and ESR spectroscopic techniques to reveal the microscopic environment of the adsorbed layers of surfactants and polymers on minerals with a special reference to the adsorption of anionic surfactants (e.g., sodium dodecyl sulfate) and polyelectrolytes (e.g., polyacrylic acid) at positively charged mineral (e.g., alumina) - water interfaces. Finally, the utility of XPS and auger techniques to identify the surface elemental composition of different mineral species has been related to their flotation efficiency.

All life on Earth relies on the ocean and yet the ocean is 95 percent unexplored, unknown and unseen by human eyes,? said Paula Keener, director of education programs for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration?s (NOAA) Office of Ocean Exploration and Research. ?To better understand, manage and protect the ocean and its resources, NOAA believes it is critical to use the best technology to explore, discover, inform, educate and motivate? (MTS, newsletter, January 2011). In the last few decades, our understanding of the global mineral resource base has been drastically changed by some surprising new developments. The potential for commercial minerals per unit area in the oceans and seabed appears to be similar to that of the terrestrial lands. Thus, almost three-fourths of the global mineral resources are in, or under, the sea and are virtually undeveloped. The area of the Pacific seabeds alone is greater than the total area of the global lands. Half of the global seabed minerals are now controlled by nation states within their Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ). The other half is controlled by the United Nations (UN) through the International Seabed Authority (ISA) within the ?areas beyond national jurisdiction? known as The Area. Thus, the Law of the Sea, ratified in 1994, has resulted in the largest transfer of control of natural resources in the history of mankind. This paper was prepared by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) Committee on the Offshore Technology Conference for the SME Board of Directors and other interested parties. As the premier professional society for the mining and mineral community in the United States, with a history dating back to the 19th century, SME?s mission is to encourage and support young men and women engineers in the minerals industry, provide the services they need, improve the image of the industry, strengthen the networking among global industry professionals and engage in proactive collaboration among industry, government, academia and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). The accomplishment of this mission can be strongly advanced by highlighting what is probably now the most significant development in the history of the modern minerals industry - the exploration of the marine environment and the understanding of the potential for the development of the minerals therein.

"The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been researching refuge alternatives (RAs) since 2007. RAs typically have built-in pressure relief valves (PRVs) to prevent the unit from reaching unsafe pressures. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration requires that these valves vent the chamber at a maximum pressure of 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi, 5.0 in. H2O), or as specified by the manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure in the RA. To facilitate PRV testing, an instrumented benchtop test fixture was developed using an off-the-shelf centrifugal blower and ductwork. Relief pressures and flow characteristics were measured for three units: (1) a modified polyvinyl chloride check valve, (2) an off-the-shelf brass/cast-iron butterfly check valve and (3) a commercially available valve that was designed specifically for one manufacturer’s steel prefabricated RAs and had been adapted for use in one mine operator’s built-in-place RA. PRVs used in tent-style RAs were not investigated. The units were tested with different modifications and configurations in order to check compliance with Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations, or 30 CFR, regulations. The commercially available relief valve did not meet the 30 CFR relief pressure specification but may meet the manufacturer’s specification. Alternative valve designs were modified to meet the 30 CFR relief pressure specification, but all valve designs will need further design research to examine survivability in the event of a 103 kPa (15.0 psi) impulse overpressure during a disaster. BackgroundThe Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006, known as the Miner Act (U.S. Department of Labor, 2006), was enacted in the wake of three mine accidents involving explosions or fire that claimed 19 lives that year. Intended to help improve underground coal mine accident preparedness, the Miner Act includes provisions that target mine safety issues in areas such as emergency response planning; adoption of new technology; training and education; and mine safety standards enforcement. Section 13 of the Miner Act specifically directed the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to provide for research into the effectiveness and viability of refuge alternatives (RAs) for underground coal mines, and the U.S. Department of Labor to act on the results of such research, as appropriate. These mandates culminated in the 2009 adoption of changes to the Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations, or 30 CFR, mining health and safety regulations (U.S. Department of Labor, 2008), requiring underground coal mines to supply mine emergency RAs and associated components so as to provide a life-sustaining environment for persons trapped underground. Such RAs can be either selfcontained mobile units or built-in-place facilities. The regulatory changes also include provisions establishing requirements for the approval of RAs and their components by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), among which are numerous criteria for providing a safe breathable atmosphere under positive pressure within the RAs. One criterion for maintaining a safe RA atmosphere is the inclusion of an air pressure relief valve that will activate at a maximum of 1.25 kPa (specified as 0.18 psi, or approximately 5.0 in. H2O), or as specified by the RA manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure in the RA (U.S. Department of Labor, 2008)."

An advanced coal preparation plant has been built at Homer City, Pennsylvania, by Pennsylvania Electric Company, a subsidiary of General Public Utilities Corporation, and New York State Electric and Gas Corporation, as an alternative to utilizing flue gas desulfurization technology to meet the Federal Environmental Protection Agency and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources air quality emission regulations of 4.0 lb S02/106BTU for the two (2) existing coal-fired generating station Units No. 1 and No. 2, and a 1.2 lb S02/106BTU for the new Unit No. 3. The coal preparation plant is designed to process 5,200,000 tons of run of the mine coal annually and has a design capability to process 1,200 tons per hour via two (2) equal capacity 600 tons per hour preparation circuits.- The plant is designed to produce multi-product coal streams consisting of a middling product of medium ash and medium sulphur content, which is environmentally compatible to support operation of the two (2) existing generating Units I and 2, and a deep cleaned, low ash, low sulphur coal product capable of environmentally supporting the ambient air quality requirements of the new Unit 3 generating facility. The waste product from the process consists of high ash, high sulphur reject material. The process has the acronym MCCS (Multi-Stream Coal Cleaning System).

"Roof bolting has long been used in underground mines across the world to provide ground support. Modern roof bolts are cheap and easy to install with the use of specialized machines as a part of the production cycle. Lhoist North America’s Crab Orchard Mine is an underground room and pillar limestone mine that uses mechanically anchored roof bolts for ground support. The mine currently employs two different roof bolting patterns: a standard 5 × 5 foot pattern, and a 2.5 × 2.5 foot pattern for use in areas with particularly hazardous roof conditions. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relative effectiveness of each bolting pattern.A series of numerical models were created using RocScience’s RS2. The models were based on a symmetrical section of the mine at its deepest point, and were modeled using Generalized Hoek-Brown failure criterion along with a discrete fracture network. A series of sensitivity analyses were performed on the models by varying parameters such as joint friction angle, crack persistence, joint randomization, and tensile strength of the limestone. Based on the results of the original models and sensitivity analyses, it appears that the standard bolting pattern provides sufficient roof support capacity under almost all the expected conditions at the mine, since factors of safety below the design value of 1.5 were only found for individual bolts in a few of the worst test cases considered. These results can help improve the Mine’s productivity and reduce operating costs without compromising safety.INTRODUCTION AND CASE STUDY DESCRIPTIONLhoist North America’s Crab Orchard Mine is an underground limestone mine located in Crab Orchard, Tennessee. The mine is located under an 800-foot-high mountain, and outcrops on three sides. The mine is accessed through three separate portals and has two main levels, along with a partially developed third level. Extraction is accomplished by the room and pillar method using 50 × 50 feet pillars and 50 × 50 feet rooms. The mining height is limited to 50 feet to keep the pillar width to height ratio around 1.0. Each heading is excavated in a two-stage process that consists of a 30-foot-tall top heading and a 20-foot-tall bench. A distance of at least 30 feet is maintained between the two levels at all times (Crab Orchard Mine Technical Staff, 2017)."

America's bulk commodity transportation systems have taken on a new look in the 1970's and 1980's. Railroad systems, barge lines providing inland and intra- coastal waterway transportation, and Great Lakes carriers have undergone substantial changes through mergers and acquisitions, consolidations of ownership and control, and construction of modern intermodal transportation facilities linking railroads and water carriers. The new look has generated some concerns and opportunities with regard to producers and shippers of bulk commodities which are characterized by the necessity of moving large quantities of heavy materials long distances. Clearly such transportation requirements call for efficient railroad and water carrier services. Shippers of commodities like coal, grain, .chemicals, minerals, ores, forest products, petroleum products, and heavy manufactured goods find reductions in transportation competition lead to concerns that rates charged by carriers will not be sufficiently constrained by market forces. At the same time, new policies on contracting for railroad services can lead to greater efficiencies, a rewarding opportunity for carriers which should be shared with shippers and consumers of bulk commodities. Then, of course, there's a related problem that in the absence of effective competition, the benefits of increased carrier efficiency will not be passed on, in part, to shippers and consumers, causing losses in markets for producers.

Bleeder entries are critically important to longwall mining for the moving of supplies, personnel, and the dilution of mine air contaminants. By design, these entries must stay open for many years for ventilation. Standing supports in moderate cover bleeder entries were observed, numerically modeled, and instrumented by researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The measurements of the installed borehole pressure cells (BPCs), standing support load cells and convergence meters, and roof extensometers are presented in this paper in addition to the numerical modeling results and visual observations made by the NIOSH researchers in the bleeder entries. The results include the effects of multiple panels being extracted in close proximity to the instrumented site as well as over one and a half years of aging. As expected, standing supports closer to the longwall gob showed the greatest load and convergence. The roof sag appeared generally independent of the proximity to the longwall gob. The BPC readings were driven by both the proximity to the gob and the depth into the pillar. The results of this study demonstrated that the entry roof can respond independently of the pillar and standing support loading. In addition, the rear abutment stress experienced by this bleeder entry design was minimal. The closer the mine development, pillar, or supports are to the gob, the greater the applied load due to rear abutment stress.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a U.S. Department of Energy research and development facility designed to demonstrate the permanent, safe disposal of U.S. defense-generated transuranic waste. The waste storage horizon is 655 m (2150 ft) below surface in bedded salt. To date the WIPP project has not emplaced any waste. There are three intake shafts used to supply air to the underground. All air is exhausted though a single return shaft. The total design airflow during normal operations is 200 m3/s (424,000 cfm). The ventilation system is designed to provide separate air splits to construction, experimental, and storage activities. Separation is achieved by isolating the storage circuit from the construction or experimental circuits with bulkheads. Any air leakage must be towards the storage area of the facility. Field studies have shown that the pressure differential necessary to maintain the correct leakage direction is susceptible to the effects of natural ventilation; therefore, extensive studies and analyses have been conducted to quantity the natural ventilation effects on the WIPP underground airflow system. A component of this work is a monitoring system designed to measure the air properties necessary for calculation of the natural ventilation pressure (NVP). This monitoring system consists of measuring dry bulb temperature, relative humidity, and barometric pressure at strategic locations on surface and underground. The psychrometric parameters of the air are measured every fifteen minutes. From these data, trends can be determined showing the impact of NVP on the ventilation system during diurnal variations in surface climate. Both summer and winter conditions have been studied. To the author's knowledge this is the first reported instance of automatic and continuous production of time and temperature variant NVPs. This paper describes the results of the initial monitoring study. INTRODUCTION The ventilation system at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in Carlsbad, New Mexico, is designed to perform two distinct functions. First, it supports normal mine ventilation requirements complying with all state and federal mine regulations. Second, the system is designed to prevent an uncontrolled release of radioactive contaminants from the storage and transportation areas of the facility. Although a nuclear radiation release in the facility is considered unlikely, many special features are implemented in the ventilation system to prevent the possible spread of contamination. The facility is constructed with the waste transportation and storage areas separated from the mining and non-radioactive experimental areas. The ventilation system is designed such that air leakage is from the mining and experimental areas to the storage areas. Furthermore, radiation detectors are located throughout the storage and waste transportation areas underground and an exhaust filtration building is installed on surface to prevent the possible release of radiation to the environment. For over two years the underground ventilation system has been rigorously tested and balanced. It was during this period that the adverse effects of NVP were noticed and subsequently quantified. From extensive field studies and computer models, several mitigating features were designed and constructed and special operational procedures were implemented to control the impacts of NVP. To quantify more accurately the NVP at the WIPP, a continuous monitoring system was installed. This monitoring system consists of measuring dry bulb temperature, relative humidity, and barometric pressure every fifteen minutes at strategic locations on surface and underground. From this psychrometric data, the NVP is calculated. Fan operating pressures and flows and strategic differential pressures are recorded from the site Continuous Monitoring System (CMS). The monitoring system provides a means of evaluating how the ventilation system behaves in regard to climatic conditions and to judge the efficacy of the mitigating features and operational procedures. To the author's knowledge, continuous calculation of NVP as a function of time and surface temperature has not been previously reported. Overview of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant The U.S. Department of Energy determined that the plastic nature of bedded salt may provide the best solution to isolate transuranic (TRU) waste from the biosphere. Initial evaluations at the WIPP site began in 1974. In 1979, the United States Congress enacted Public Law 96-164 for the construction and development of the WIPP project. The mission of the WIPP is to demonstrate the safe, long-term disposal of TRU waste generated by the national defense programs of the United States. TRU waste is classified as a low to medium level waste. The waste is stored in drums and does not produce significant heat (not greater than 1 W per drum). The WIPP site is located approximately 47 km (29 miles) east of Carlsbad, New Mexico in the Chihuahuan Desert. The repository is located in the 630 m (2000 ft) thick Salado Formation. This Permian Basin salt deposit is about 225 million years old and appears to have been minimally disturbed by earthquake, faulting, and ground water activity since it was deposited. The 1.1 Ga Midcontinent rift of North America has many similarities to the geology of the Voisey's Bay region in Labrador and the geology of the Noril'sk region in Siberia. These similarities include the hosting of large volumes of sulfur- undersaturated and trace-element-enriched basalt, having igneous centers characterized by crustal contamination, being characterized by metal depletions in some mafic units (an indication of prior sulfide segregation) and having known occurrences of Ni-Cu sulfide mineralization. These similarities along with new geophysical data and refined models for Ni-Cu sulfide deposits suggest that the Midcontinent rift probably contains undiscovered Cu-Ni [±] PGE sulfide deposits, some of which could be the size and grade of a Voisey's Bay or Noril'sk deposit. In particular, intrusions and related feeder systems that occur in northern Michigan and Wisconsin, as well as to the southwest along the rift margin, deserve serious examination.

"Mine monitoring through various sensors is a vital component of successful miner safety and health programs. Data from environmental, geotechnical, infrastructure, and other types of sensors are increasingly being used to discover and mitigate health and safety concerns in underground mines. In many smaller underground mines, as well as in new development headings of larger underground mines, leaky feeder communication systems may be the only available means to transport crucial monitoring data. In addition, data transport is increasingly being delivered using Internet Protocol (IP) while older forms of serial communication are being retired. This paper presents the selection, configuration, and testing methodologies that were employed by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to integrate commercially available land mobile data radios into an existing leaky feeder communication system to provide Internet Protocol data transport. INTRODUCTION To enhance the health and safety of their mining workforce, mine owners and operators are increasingly installing environmental monitoring and control systems in underground mines. Real-time, mine-wide monitoring is becoming a reality with the implementation of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) into the underground mining industry [1]. However, not all underground mines, especially smaller mines and new development headings in larger mines, have the information technology (IT) infrastructure in place to handle the data transport requirements for the newer IP-based technologies that are part of IIoT. This was the case with a mine in the Western United States; it lacked the infrastructure to perform critical monitoring in remote headings. The mine partnered with the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH’s) Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) to develop and evaluate a cost-effective solution for real-time monitoring of geotechnical conditions in relatively remote sections of the mine. This paper describes SMRD’s solution to leverage the mine’s existing leaky feeder system to achieve IP data transport using commercially available land mobile data radios. DATA RADIO SELECTION The primary selection criteria for the data radios were network data format, modulation type, and radio channel spacing. The network data format decided upon was Internet Protocol. This format allowed for straightforward integration between the IP-enabled data acquisition system located in a remote heading and the network switch located in the control room. It also eliminated the added complexity of additional network hardware such as Ethernet to Serial converters. IP additionally provided a direct path to integration into higher bandwidth networks, such as fiber optic, should they become available."

P.T. Freeport Indonesia operates a mining complex located in the highlands of Papua, Indonesia. This district consists of both underground and surface operations. The East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS) is one of the major orebodies in this district. Subsurface caving of the EESS has been carried out in a systematic series of mining lifts dating back almost 30 years. Present production is from the third lift (Deep Ore Zone), which is scheduled to peak at 80,000 mtpd during 2009, with this rate sustained through 2015. The orebody is proven below the existing caving level, with the next vertical block called the Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ). This paper presents an overview of the DMLZ Mine based on recent feasibility level study. The mine is being designed for a peak production rate of 29.2 million mtpy, with 1,803 total ore draw points spread over a panel caving footprint of about 1.3km by 375m. The present reserves for this mine total 501 million tonnes. Located 1,400-1,800m below the original surface, the DMLZ will be one of the deepest caving operations in the world. Production is scheduled to commence in 2015. Discussion is provided on most design aspects including; caving methodology and layouts, geotechnical predictions and risks, ore handling systems, ventilation design and associated infrastructure, high-lift pumping system, cost estimation and expenditure scheduling.
