"Tests were conducted to determine properties of four foam agents for their potential use in longwall mining dust control. Foam has been tried in underground mining in the past for dust control and is currently being reconsidered for use in underground coal longwall operations in order to help those operations comply with the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s lower coal mine respirable dust standard of 1.5 mg/m3. Foams were generated using two different methods. One method used compressed air and water pressure to generate foam, while the other method used low-pressure air generated by a blower and water pressure using a foam generator developed by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Foam property tests, consisting of a foam expansion ratio test and a water drainage test, were conducted to classify foams. Compressed-air-generated foams tended to have low expansion ratios, from 10 to 19, with high water drainage. Blower-air-generated foams had higher foam expansion ratios, from 30 to 60, with lower water drainage. Foams produced within these ranges of expansion ratios are stable and potentially suitable for dust control. The test results eliminated two foam agents for future testing because they had poor expansion ratios. The remaining two foam agents seem to have properties adequate for dust control. These material property tests can be used to classify foams for their potential use in longwall mining dust control. IntroductionAbout one-half of U.S. underground coal is produced by longwall mining, which allows for mining high volumes of coal but generates significant amounts of coal mine dust. This can lead to overexposures for longwall miners and possibly occupational respiratory diseases, including black lung and silicosis, which have no cure and can be disabling or fatal. The only method to avoid these occupational illnesses is through elimination of exposure to respirable coal mine dust and crystalline silica (quartz). The current occupational exposure limit for respirable coal mine dust is 1.5 mg/m3 during each shift that a miner is exposed in the active workings of the mine or in mine facilities (Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), 2015a). When respirable quartz is present, the mine must maintain average concentrations at or below 0.1 mg/m3. If the mine exceeds the 0.1 mg/m3 respirable quartz dust concentration, then the applicable respirable dust standard is reduced, calculated as 10 divided by the percent quartz present (MSHA, 2015b)."

The United States potash industry had its beginning in the early Colonial days. Potash was initially manufactured by leaching of hardwood ashes in large iron pots. Production of potash was recorded as early as 1631 in New Hampshire, and in Maine a few years later. According to the census of 1850, the production of potash was America's most thriving chemical industry and, at that time, 569 plants were reported producing potash from wood ashes. Interest in potash was so great prior to the 1800's that the very first United States patent, signed by George Washing- ton, was granted for the production of potash on July 31, 1790. A new era for the production of potash began when potash was discovered by the analysis from a brine well in 1839 near Stassfurt, Germany while exploring for salt. The predominant use of potash at that time was in the chemical industry rather than agriculture. The discovery, by Justice von Liebig in about 1858, that potash salt contributed greatly to the essential plant food in soil opened up an enormous potential market for a suitable potash material.

A tectonically disturbed sequence of Mississippian age evaporites expressing a 5 milligal negative gravity anomaly near Sussex in southeastern New Brunswick, Canada, was investigated by a program of drilling, geologic and geophysical work over the past 27 months. Seventeen of twenty-one drill holes have penetrated 10 to 140 feet of potash mineralization in a salt sequence underlying 2 000 to 3 000 feet of arenaceous, conformable red beds, also of Mississippian age. Bromine and borate studies, lithological characteristics and geophysics, have facilitated improved understanding of the salt structure. The salt sequence has been affected by f1owage which has resulted in both major and minor folding. In the more disturbed areas, the potash interval was extensively subterraneally eroded at the upper anhydrite-salt contact.

The reliable performance of the coal reclaim system is essential to the continued availability of a coal-fired electric generating unit. The control of fugitive coal dust within the areas housing the reclaiming equipment is necessary not only to minimize maintenance and clean-up costs, but is also a safety and health consideration. This paper describes the reclaim system control and dust suppression systems as initially installed, the shortcomings of these systems and the steps eventually taken to correct these shortcomings.

In a flotation froth (and foam), air bubbles become larger due to coalescence, causing less hydrophobic particles to drop off. A bubble-coarsening model has been developed by calculating the changes in Plateau border area as a function of the initial bubble size at the base of a foam, liquid fraction, and foam height and then relating the predicted Plateau border area to the critical rupture thickness of lamellae film. The model predicts that bubble coarsens with increasing froth height, decreasing frother dosage, and decreasing aeration rate. The model predictions are in good agreement with actual bubble size measurements.

Particle processing is a key to using solid particles in fuel cell applications. Selectivity with regard to reactivity, impurities, etc. is important feature and the treatment of particle surfaces could greatly impact the performance of direct carbon fuel cells. Solid fuel particles will become increasingly important in the future. Present energy conversion systems for solid fuels are too inefficient. New energy conversion systems for solid fuels with higher energy conversion efficiencies are possible. Fuel cell technology is a key-technology in these new conversion systems. The direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC) operates on carbon particles obtained from a variety of solid fuel feedstocks. The DCFC is the only fuel cell designed to directly oxidize carbon particles in a special anode chamber. The particles are generally graphite structure with high purity. The electrolyte used is the high temperature solid oxide, molten carbonate or hydroxide electrolyte. Since a pure stream of CO2 is produced the stream can easily be sequestered and disposed. Pure carbon dioxide produced as a by-product would also have a market in many industries. A well-defined technology roadmap identifying key research and development (R&D) issues is necessary to provide a framework for the development of these systems and to prevent entrenchment in inherently inefficient technologies. This review paper describes the direct carbon fuel cell and its system, how it works, the developmental status, the characteristics of the carbon particles needed, and the research and development issues for the technology. INTRODUCTION The DCFC has been under development for many years. It was researched as early as 18961), but an intense research and development is necessary to realize its potential. William W Jacques, a US electrical engineer and chemist, described a DCFC in 1896 in US Patent 555511 for a “Method of converting potential energy of carbon into electrical energy”. Jacques used coke electrodes in a molten NaOH electrolyte. Molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC), solid oxide (SOFC) or hydroxide electrolyte (AFC) technologies can be used as the basis for the DCFC technology. A schematic of the direct carbon fuel cell in the MCFC mode is shown in Figure 1. The molten carbonate fuel cell operates at approximately 650°C (1200°F). The high operating temperature is needed to achievesufficient conductivity of the carbonate electrolyte, yet allow the use of low-cost metal cell components. A benefit associated with this high temperature is that noble metal catalysts are not required for the cell electrochemical oxidation and reduction processes. With complex component, higher salt content, low biodegradability, DSD acid oxidation wastewater could not be efficiently dealt with traditional methods. It is pointed that the coal water slurry could be made with DSD acid oxidation wastewater of different concentration and the density of coal water slurry could be up to 70%, while its viscosity is only 850~930 mPa?s. The coal water slurry could be perfectly jetted and burnt under different conditions. The higher density the DSD acid oxidation wastewater has, the better properties the coal water slurry have. The pollution components and characteristic group of DSD acid oxidation wastewater are similar to the additives of coal water slurry, so it could be used as a kind of usable additive of water coal slurry. It is so reasonable and feasible to make coal water slurry with DSD acid oxidation wastewater that the pollution of DSD acid oxidation wastewater can be solved completely.

Wet ground and dry muscovite mica continued to be the most commercially significant types of mica in the US. Canada's phlogopite mica and some US deposits of sericite mica have also contributed to the overall application of mica in a variety of industries. Mica's major end uses are paint, rubber, and construction material. Its value was about $30 million last year. The southern Appalachian Mountains weathered granitic bodies and pegmatites continued to be the primary US muscovite mica source. North Carolina production of mica as a coproduct of feldspar, kaolin, and lithium processing accounted for more than 60% of the total output. New Mexico, South Carolina, South Dakota, Georgia, and Connecticut accounted for the rest. Flake mica was also produced from mica schists in North Carolina and South Dakota. It is also being investigated in Ontario, Canada. Wet ground mica Wet ground mica was produced by four companies: KMG Minerals, Franklin Mineral Products, J.M. Huber Corp., and Concord Mica. KMG and Franklin Mineral Products accounted for more than 80% of the production. Wet ground mica is a highly delaminated platey powder used to reinforce solvent and aqueous system paints for increased weatherability, durability, and greater resistance to moisture and corrosive atmospheres. In plastics, it is an excellent filler and reinforcing agent, providing better dielectric properties, heat resistance, and added tensile and flexural strength. In the rubber industry, wet ground mica is used as a mold lubricant to manufacture molded rubber products, such as tires. It also acts as an inert filler that reduces gas permeability. Miscellaneous uses include additives to caulking compounds, foundry applications, lubricants, greases, silicone release agents, and dry powder fire extinguishers. Wet ground mica prices range from $353 to $496/t ($320 to $450 per st) fob plant. Specialty products may be higher, depending on customer requirements. Dry ground muscovite mica Dry ground mica was produced by nine companies: KMG Minerals, Unimin, US Gypsum, Mineral Industrial Commodities of America, Spartan Minerals Corp., Asheville Mica Corp., Deneen Mica Co., Pacer Corp., and J.M. Huber Corp. Dry ground mica's primary market is wallboard joint compound. Here, it is a functional extender that improves the physical properties and finishing characteristics of the mud. It is also used in various grades as a filler in asphalt products, enamels, mastics, cements, plastics, adhesives, texture paints, and plaster. Dry ground mica became popular as an additive in oil well drilling fluids, where the mica flakes platey nature helps seal the well bore, preventing circulating fluid loss. But oil's dramatic price drop and consequent curtailing of well drilling brought this once booming market to a virtual halt. Forecasters predict that this business will gradually pick up during the next few years and most current dry ground mica producers will again produce the oil well drilling material. Dry ground mica prices range from $110 to $420/t ($100 to $380 per st) fob plant. High quality sericite mica, sometimes referred to as an altered muscovite, was mainly produced by two US companies. Mineral Industrial Commodities of America and Mineral Mining Corp. have equivalent capacities of about 27 kt/a (30,000 stpy). The majority of the material produced was consumed by the joint compound industry. Minor uses are in paint and oil well drilling. The lack of ground sericite penetration into the traditional ground muscovite markets is attributed to high silica content, typically in excess of 20%, and a bulk density. Prices range from $88 to $187/t ($80 to $170 per st) fob plant. Phlogopite mica is a dark colored, magnesium bearing mica rarely found in the US. Suzorite Mica Corp., a division of Lacana Petroleum, mines a deposit in Quebec that is 80% to 90% phlogopite. The dark color has prevented the material's entry into the traditional paint markets. But the physical properties and high purity make it useful as a low-cost reinforcing filler in many plastics and several asphalt applications. Phlogopite mica is ground to several grades and may be treated with various surface coatings for use in plastics or coated with nickel for EMI/RFI shielding applications. Prices for phlogopite products range from $144 to $580/t ($104 to $580 per st) fob plant. As in recent years, production of domestic muscovite sheet - block, film, and splittings - remained insignificant. These resources are limited and uneconomic due to the high cost of hand labor required to process sheet mica in the US. Imports from India and Brazil were the primary sources of the estimated 1 kt (2.4 million lbs) valued at $2.5 million consumed by US electronic and electrical equipment manufacturers in 1986. "Search Amazon.com using the keyword “leadership,” and you are rewarded with a list of over 144,000 titles. There is no shortage of books and articles, many of them well written, with excellent ideas. So why is there still a constant cry for effective leadership in organizations? Often, the person in charge has personal blinders that prevent them from seeing or understanding how to implement the newest leadership idea or method. Either deliberately or subliminally, there is a disconnect from learning about leadership, and actually modelling and implementing what has been learned. Some current research in leadership theory can provide insight and tools to address this issue. INTRODUCTION Let’s start with a discussion of terms. Pseudo is defined by Webster (2015) as “Being apparently rather actually as stated.” Synonyms include affected, assumed, contrived, fake, false, phony, pretended, and artificial. Antonyms for pseudo provide additional clarity, especially when we consider terms normally associated with effective leadership: genuine, natural, unaffected, unforced. A similar type from my world of academia is a pseudointellectual, “A person exhibiting intellectual pretentions that have no basis in sound scholarship” (Dictionary.com, 2015). This is a person pretending to have an interest in intellectual activities for status; a fraudulent intellectuality. The thought of applying the term pseudo to leadership first occurred to me while reading Power and Innocence by Rollo May (1972). In discussing the dynamics of power, and how the innocent are often victims of the exercise of power, especially the more aggressive and destructive types of power, he saw two types of innocence. The first he called authentic innocence, which he described as a childlike clarity that carried into adulthood. The second type he called pseudoinnocence, a type of naïveté that makes a virtue of powerlessness, weakness, and helplessness; being more childish than childlike (p. 48-50). Just as there is the potential for pseudoinnocence and pseudointellectuals, it is also possible to experience pseudo leadership. (I hope the gentle reader is not troubled by my decision to use pseudo leadership as two separate words, in contrast to the use of compound words for pseudoinnocence and pseudointellectual cited above. Since there is no official definition of pseudo leadership, I have exercised my author’s prerogative to treat it as two words, both because I think in this particular application this makes the most sense, and also I think it is easier to read). As we will see, there are numerous theories applied to leadership. What is so troubling to many of us in organizations, there are a myriad of “leaders” in companies espousing pet theories, but very few instances where the actions of these individuals match their words. This is a particularly important problem when we look at the effect this has on the day to day operations of a mine, and where effective leadership (or its absence) can have a profound impact on both productivity and safety."

Thunder Basin Coal Company has two mines located in the southern portion of the Powder River Basin. 60-90 km southeast of Gillette, Wyoming. The mines are principally located on federal coal leases acquired in the late-1960's. Development plans for the Black Thunder Mine focused on dragline stripping, but environmental considerations during the mid-1970's made truck-shovel stripping the method of choice when the mine opened in 1976. In 1981, the Coal Creek Mine opened as the first dragline mine in the Gillette area of the Powder River Basin. The regional terrain is flat-lying with occasional clinker-capped hills. The mines are located on the Wasatch and Fort Union Formation contact. The coals are Paleocene in age and the deposits are structurally simple, dipping gently to the west. The seams are thick and are classified as sub-bituminous-C. The Black Thunder Mine, with its 21 m thick seam, is strategically located in the center of the highest heat value mining area of the southern Powder River Basin.

This study examines a process for the recovery of precious metals from difficult minerals that exhibit refractory characteristics to cyanidation: low extraction of metals and high consumption of leaching reagent. A mineral sample from Monte del Favor Mine, located in Hostotipaquillo, Jalisco, Mexico, was physically and chemically characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), fire assay and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Two stages of leaching were carried out, first to eliminate manganese from the sample using sodium sulfite (Na2SO3) as a reductive reagent along with sulfuric acid (H2SO4), and second to dissolve gold and silver with hydrochloric acid (HCl) and sodium hypochlorite (NaClO). The results show extractions of around 96 percent for manganese (Mn), 98.73 percent for silver (Ag) and 83 percent for gold (Au). The usefulness of high acidity and Na2SO3 to obtain better results in Mn and Ag leaching are discussed along with the roles that HCl and NaClO play in Ag and Au dissolution values.

Dynamic permeability is a significant hydrologic condition associated with in-situ leaching at the Cyprus Casa Grande operations. Several factors contribute to changes in the permeability conditions. They are: 1) hydraulically induced fracture development, 2) geochemical changes during leaching in the rock matrix, and 3) changes in the relative degree of saturation of the deposit. Dynamic permeability conditions were evaluated using available pressure and flow rates from the 58 injection and recovery wells obtained over one year period. A finite element, 2-D hydrologic model called INVERT which is designed to estimate aquifer parameters under transient and steady state flow conditions was used for the investigation. The permeability conditions during 7 different steady state intervals throughout the one year time frame were determined. The results confirm that big changes in permeability occur as a function of time as well as a function of injection pressure condition.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PaDEP) has been issuing surface mining permits since 1984 that authorize remining in areas that will affect preexisting pollutional discharges. These permits require the mine operator to employ best management practices to reduce pollution loading from abandoned mine discharges. A total of 110 completed mining operations with 233 discharges were evaluated to determine the impact to water quality. Overall, acid loading from these discharges was reduced by 7, 200 kg (15, 900 lbs) per day or 61%. Metal loadings were also reduced. For acidity, 49% of discharges improved or were eliminated, 52% showed no significant change and fewer than 1 % got worse. Loading reductions resulted from a combination of reduced concentrations and lower flows.

Exposure to hand-arm vibration (HAV) among the labor force in the mining industry can result in permanent vibration diseases such as behavioral disorders, visual impairment, osteoporosis, pain (mostly in the hands, wrists, and shoulders), circulatory system disorders, and malnutrition. In this study, the vibration exposure of excavator operators working regularly in 25 different natural stone quarries was measured. In addition, the relationship between vibration exposure and rock properties was investigated. Gloved and ungloved vibration measurements were performed and revealed that antivibration gloves reduce excavator operators’ vibration exposure by 7.10–25.95%. Samples from each quarry were characterized with rock mechanics tests. The correlations between the hand-arm vibration measurements and the natural stone physical–mechanical properties (uniaxial compressive strength, Shore hardness, Knoop hardness, apparent density and total porosity) were determined to be over 70%. One finding of the study was that the health risk in excavators cannot be reduced sufficiently by the sole use of antivibration gloves. Furthermore, the excavation of any rock with a Knoop hardness above 121 is associated with an 81% risk of HAV. To increase awareness of the danger of vibration exposure for natural stone miners, training programs should be provided, and technical and operational changes should be implemented.

The basic story at Bear Swamp was how to excavate an underground chamber 79 feet wide by 227 feet long and 150 feet high, along with the related access, tarbrace, leads, power tunnels and shafts, do it under cost and ahead of schedule and still have just about everybody love you. The isometric sketch of the overall project follows. I won't go into any of the details of the physical scope at this point. Instead, we'll bring out the sizes, grades, particular problems of the different areas as we cover them. First of all, let's establish that Bear Swamp was a Target Estimate - Fee with Incentives type of contract. Gates and Fox's contract was with the project's general contractor, J. A. Jones. We were one of three contractors who submitted proposals and estimates to Jones. After much negotiation and many submittals, Gates and Fox was notified we had been selected to do the underground excavation on April 12, 1971. We had our first people back on site in two days, set up a temporary office, made our first steel order for jumbo erection, pacing our jumbo construction to meet the date when J. A. Jones would have the access portal ready for us. The shops, yards, dry house, compressor building were all erected as sites were designated for our use. At last, on Thursday, June 3, we trimmed the face and moved our 9-machine Euclid jumbo up a hastily constructed haul road and started our portal preparation of the access tunnel.

Data used to build geostatistical models come from a wide variety of sources with potentially differing sample errors and volume supports. Typically all available sample measurements are pooled together for statistical analysis irrespective of the quality of the data. The sample data is used to assess spatial continuity, make local estimates and assess uncertainty. A new methodology is proposed to simplify accounting for samples of differing quality. The result is improved estimates with higher weights assigned to high-quality samples, while low-quality samples receive less influence in resource estimation. A new dimension, d, is introduced and calibrated to account for sample error and/or volume during estimation. The addition of an extra dimension can be easily incorporated in existing kriging or inverse distance workflows. The only additional parameters required are the sample error and volume for each datum. The methodology is demonstrated and the improvement in local accuracy is documented. Extending the dimensionality of the domain to four (three spatial dimensions and the additional d dimension) requires a valid 4D variogram model; therefore, the spherical variogram model is generalized to arbitrary n-dimensions.

In discussing so-called "volume rates" for the movement of coal, I start from one basic premise: That it is the job of the railroads to devise rates which will move the traffic, while at the same time assuring a fair return on their investment. No matter how reasonable and nondiscriminatory freight rates may be, if they fail to attract and hold traffic to the rails, they are utterly useless - both to the carriers and the shipping public. And it will be my purpose here to show that under certain circumstances the use of volume rates by the railroads enables them. to hold traffic which would otherwise be lost, and to avoid needless dissipation of revenues, Properly employed, volume rates should benefit both the coal industry and the railroads, I do not, however, advocate the discarding of the carload as the basic rate-making unit. Far from it. Sound operating reasons dictate the making of rates based on car- loads, and the tradition of carload rates has a firm foundation in railroad operating costs, many of which vary directly with cars handled. In short, the carload was, Is and, in my opinion, will continue to be the basis for most rail rates on coal, as well as on other commodities. But change is an inevitable result of progress, and we should not be so bound by tradition that we are unwilling to try novel methods of ate making, should the circumstances require, The modern rate maker must, now and then, run the risk of being called an iconoclast if he is to keep up with the times. As T will point out, volume rates were for many years rejected by both the Interstate Commerce Commission and the railroads, But now both the Commission and the carriers have come to recognize that under proper circumstances and conditions volume rates are a powerful and effective tool.

A new method of slaking lime has been developed by DENVER EQUIPMENT DIVISION of Joy Industrial Equipment Company and patented under U. S. Patent 4,261,953. The new method utilizes an attrition machine, commonly used in mineral processing circuits as a sand scrubbing device, to slake lime. The scrubbing effect of the attrition slaker continuously produces a fresh reactive surface so that further slaking may occur. This process allows for utilization of slaking all grades of burnt lime and most grades of dolomite lime. Testing indicates that poor grades of water usually not considered for this service can now be tolerated using the attrition slaker. The slaked lime produced is of higher quality, faster reacting and much less apt to produce scaling problems than previously experienced. The attrition slaker can be combined with a spiral classifier and ball mill to eliminate any need for grit handling or grit removal. The attrition slaker can be designed for all burnt lime tonnages up to the limit of 175 tph and 1" pebble lime size. Control can be maintained easily with minimal operator assistance. The equipment, the principals of process metallurgy, and the above topics will be presented.

The Cross City Tunnel comprises 2km of a new underground traffic route in Sydney, Australia. The route is very complex, involving some six separate tunnels and three underground Y-junctions. For almost 200m the six tunnels run parallel at different level sunder William Street, Sydney. Almost all of the route runs adjacent to the City Business District of Sydney and adjacent to or below many major buildings and services. The planning and design of this project is described. The geometric arrangement is achieved with a strong dependence on 3D road design packages. Road alignment constraints include land acquisition and proximity to existing tunnels and basements as well as maintaining separation from the other tunnels in the scheme. Geotechnical and hydrogeological studies are described. Findings discussed include the high horizontal stress field in the Sydney area and investigation of incised palaeochannels on the route. Methods of design for the tunnels and Y-junctions are described, as well as methods of settlement prediction for the buildings and services. The latter includes the settlement assessment for more than 200 buildings, many in excess of 20 storeys, as well as services including all of the city railway lines in Sydney.

Florida Power and Light is the fifth largest investor-owned electric utility in the country. It has a service territory that covers 35 counties, or 28,000 square miles, 2.5 million customers, and serves 5.6 million people. The total installed capacity is 13,470 MW, generated by four nuclear units, 36 oil and/or gas fired units, and 48 gas turbine units. Traditionally, FPL has been an oil-based utility. In 1979, this dependency on oil became obvious when 42 million barrels of oil were burned during the year. At that time, it was also projected that, based on the current estimates of customer growth and available generation capacity through 1990, FPL's residual fuel oil consumption would increase from the 1979 level of 42 million barrels (6.7 million m3) per year to approximately 55 million barrels (8.7 million m3) per year by the mid-1990's. Concern over this was further aggravated by the fact that it was difficult to estimate both the price and quantity of fuel oil that would be available over the next decade since changes in the world market, decisions by oil producers and refiners, and international political developments would all affect the availability of oil. Also, at that time, the price of residual fuel oil had increased drastically, and there was no reason to think that these prices would soon stabilize. Thus, oil back-out became a primary objective of FPL and since then, FPL has been actively investigating ways to decrease fuel oil consumption.
