The Walnut Creek Mine was developed in 1989 to supply lignite to the Texas-New Mexico Power TNP-ONE power plant. Being new, we had the opportunity to start from scratch and rethink many of the traditional methods of managing a mine operation. We had the opportunity to create a team environment, encouraging people to get involved and make decisions. The founding philosophy of the mine, "A Quality Product by Quality People", acknowledged that the key to a productive, quality operation was the people. This paper will explore methods employed by Walnut Creek in selection of team members, building the team and the relative success of these methods.

This paper presents the results of test work performed with a Pacific Electric Motors (PEM) high intensity magnetic separator (20 kilogauss) , a unit capable of separating weakly, as well as strongly, magnetic minerals in the particle size range of sands to clays. Tests were performed on some 40 industrial minerals. With some minerals excellent separations were attained and with others intermediate and poor separations were accomplished. This study is a preliminary survey and many of the intermediate and poor results can be improved as separation problems are worked out with additional test work. It is demonstrated that with a number of industrial minerals high intensity magnetic separation is a viable beneficiation technique that is economic ally feasible.

RADON EXPOSURE AND CARCINOGENIC CELL TRANSFORMATION The highest radiation burden to miners is due to inhalation of radon and its short-lived decay products. The quantification of the risk associated with this radiation burden is complicated by modeldependent lung dosimetry, insufficient accuracy of past human exposure data as well as lacking knowledge about potential synergism of various carcinogens. Nevertheless, it is evident from epidemiological studies of miners that inhalation of elevated levels of radon daughters is correlated with increased lung cancer incidence (UNSCEAR, 1977). The situation is further complicated by the lack of reliable data on the biological variability of the latency period for the development of lung tumor under varying exposure conditions. At present information on variation with age is scarce, however, it is indicated that the excess lung cancer rate for workers exposed to high radon levels is considerably higher, if exposure occurs at ages over 40 years as compared to under 30 years of age (Sevc, Kunz, Placek, 1976). Furthermore, latency period is shorter by 6 - 7 years for smokers exposed to elevated radon levels than for non-smokers (Fry, 1976). Analysis of US- and CSR-uranium miner data revealed that the mean latency period is in the order of about 15 years (Jacobi, 1973). These uncertainties, together with medical diagnostic shortcomings, lead to the dissatisfying situation that at present the detection of radon induced injury of mining personal is primarily the assessment of the endpoint, i.e. radiation induced cancerous transformation of lung cells with typically less than 10% chance for recovery. Therefore it would be advantageous to develop practically applicable diagnostic aids to indicate already early precancerogenic changes of cell characteristics. This would permit the identification of specific population groups at increased risk for the development of lung cancer, thereby increasing the chances of more successful medical treatment. Despite continuous improvements in the reliability of test methods for the diagnosis of cancer cells there is still need for techniques, which enable the detection of transformed cells before the onset of invasion of the host organism. It is generally recognized that the transformation of a cell into a malignant state leads to a change of the cell surface, indicating a correlation between membrane-specific immunological properties and loss of growth control. Surface alterations on cells appear to be responsible in part for the malignant state and are not simply secondary effects of the transformation (Schnebli and Burger, 1973). Furthermore, membranes of cancer cells differ significantly from those of normal cells, particularly, in permeability properties (Rastogi, 1976). In dying cells, proteins, glycoproteins, peptides, aminoacids and their breakdown products are released, which block the permeation of the membrane itself. A mammalian cell can be considered as a 3-phase system (interior, boundary, environment) with the membrane forming a heterogeneous barrier between two subsystems. Under normal circumstances a difference of chemical potential is maintained on both sides of the membrane, causing an ion gradient across and fixed surface charges on the membrane. This results in a membrane resting potential (MRP) between cytoplasm and the bulk medium. It has been shown that MRP is a highly sensitive indicator for cellular reactions due to physical, chemical and biological agents, particularly whenever phenomena of transport and ion gradients as well as permeability are involved (Redmann, 1980). The primary interaction of the agent "ionizing radiation" with any form of living matter occurs at the cellular level. The component with the highest hit probability is the cell membrane. In the study presented MRP-changes of human cells were investigated with simultaneous measurements during irradiation and post-irradiation intervals up to six days. Furthermore, the suitability of MRP-measurements of human cells was tested as an indicator for early changes of cellular properties prior to the histological confirmation of carcinogenic transformation. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Lung cells The biological specimen used were cultured human lung cells and human lung biopsy samples. Monolayers of lung fibroblasts (W138) were grown in petridishes using conventional culture techniques. In addition, transformed lung cells (W138SV13, subline 2RA) were used applying similar culture methods. All petridishes were incubated at 37°C and only cells in logarithmic growth phase were used. Freshly excised lung biopsy samples were obtained from randomly selected male and female patients (20 cases), where suspected or unclear malignancies were indicated by clinical or X-ray observations. At the time of sampling 80 % of the patients were or had been smokers in the past. The samples were taken by means of a stiff bronchoscope introduced into the trachea under local anasthesia with 1 % Novesinsolution (preparation with Atropin and Pantopen). This permitted the observation of both main bronchi down to the segmental bronchials. From each patient two tissue samples were excised from the mucusepithelial layer under visual control with fiber optics and transferred immediately into 1 % NaClsolution. Scan electron micrographs, SEM's, will be shown of representative refractory clays from Missouri deposits, with counterparts from other localities. The story is in the pictures, ("1000 words in each picture"), but clay types include the following. Plastic, semi-plastic, and semi-flint "fire clays" of Missouri have textures which appear to retain certain relic texture of ball clay. Flint clay is composed of tightly interlocking packets, sheaves, and books of kaolinite. Diaspore and boehmite mineral textures characterize those "clays". Surface-boulder diaspore shows very pronounced recrystallization and crystal enlargement from original, unexposed first-grade diaspore.

In the past decade, there have been several incidents of massive ground collapses in underground stone mines in the eastern United States. Fortunately, these events have not resulted in any fatalities. However, three mine workers were injured and many others were at risk due to the hazard from the fall of ground and/or the airblast associated with these massive collapses. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) initiated a project to better understand the causes of these massive ground collapses to help prevent their future occurrence. The main objective of this study is to investigate the main factor(s)that initiated one of these massive ground collapses. The authors relied on several tools including three-dimensional (3-D) LiDAR scans for the surface subsidence feature and the underground mine workings around the collapsed area, borescope data at multiple locations around the collapse, S-Pillar analysis for average and unfavorable conditions, and numerical models. The emphasis has been placed on the impact of the following limestone pillar stability parameters: pillar width-to-height (W/H) ratio, benching, the existence of karst features, weak roof, and geological discontinuities. 3-D LiDAR scans were utilized to show the shape and the extent of karst cavities observed within stable pillars around the perimeter of the collapsed area. Together, this coupling of field measurements and observations and modeled systems suggests the potential causes of the collapse.

"As underground mining continues to operate at deeper depths and in more complex geologic and geometric conditions, there has been an increased demand for mine designs to better reflect site-specific conditions, measurements, and observations with respect to ground control safety and stability. During the past 20 years, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed, validated and distributed a number of free software packages (ALPS, ARMPS, AMSS, ARBS, etc.) specifically aimed at providing the industry with ground control design tools for the evaluation of underground stability in coal mines. While these programs were initially developed as stand-alone software packages where all data reside on an individual or workgroup computer, modern day web applications have begun to migrate toward a “multiple-tier” architecture, allowing multiple users to access an application by means of an Internet connection.This article introduces a new Web-based platform for ground control software applications, webGroundControl (webGC). webGC provides users with a platform through which one can access NIOSH and other ground control design software utilizing a Webbased, multiple-tier architecture. This provides users with easy access to ground control designs, the ability to perform on-demand calculations, as well as increase online collaboration between operational personnel and engineers through a web server. The basic framework and, more specifically, the user-interface of webGC are defined and outlined within this paper. It is expected that the mining industry will rapidly embrace this new product and webGroundControl will be a new paradigm for mining engineering computer applications. Platform architectureAs Web-based computing technologies continue to advance and cloud computing gains momentum, web-based platforms for software applications are growing in popularity across all industries due to ease of product accessibility and distribution as well as data security. With the expansion of Internet connectivity on the surface and underground, there is an industry need to develop Internet-based applications for mine and ground control design (Barczak et al., 2016). Cloud-based products are already available for many industries and are slowly being developed for the mining and geotechnical industry. A notable example is the drillysis package, which is a cloud-based borehole logging database (Geosysta, 2017) or the Dynonobel package for on the fly blasting calculations (Dyno Nobel, 2013)."

Spalding DeDecker Associates, Inc. (SDA) designed a tunnel project that fulfilled the Sustainability Objectives of Social Equity, Environment, and Economics. The project translated the principles of Sustainable Development into actions that lessened the impacts of construction on environment, lives of residents, businesses, traffic, and other social systems (i.e., shopping, recreational, and educational). The project involved the construction of a 16,108 feet of 84 inch diameter sanitary sewer interceptor by tunneling 40 feet beneath the ground surface through difficult geological and hydrogeological settings. An effective public information and stakeholders relationship program was developed to achieve the stated objectives of sustainability.

"INTRODUCTIONDouble Shield TBMs were introduced in the market in the early seventies with three main targets:• Increase the TBM performances in term of advance per day thanks to the ability to erect a segmental lining simultaneously with the excavation phase.• Be able to advance through unstable and disturbed rocks under the protection of the shields• Provide a finished tunnel by installing a precast lining as the TBM advance.In 2003 SELI developed the design of the Double Shield Universal (DSU) TBM as an evolution of the original Double Shield TBM design.This new TBM design was targeted to improve: the TBM capability to advance through squeezing/converging rock formations under high cover, the telescopic joint design (allowing by such to operate the machine in double shield mode in very weak rock), the capability of the TBM to investigate and treat the ground around and ahead of the tunnel face.In the same lapse of time Single Shield TBMs, originally utilized for soft ground tunnelling, extended progressively their range of application to mix rocks and finally to hard rock tunnelling with increasing performances.This also thanks to the substantial reduction in the installation time of the segmental lining ring that contributed to minimize the TBM stand by time between two consecutive boring strokes.Today the choice between the two types of TBMs needs to be carefully evaluated project by project since one type of TBM may “prevail” in certain geologies and diameters and vice versa.THE VISHNUGAD PIPALKOTI TUNNELThe Vishnugad Pipalkoti Tunnel is part of the 444 MW Vishnugad Pipalkoti Hydro Electric Project (VPHEP) on Alaknanda river in Uttarakhand (India).The Owner is the Indian electric company “Tehry Hydro Development Corporation” (THDC) and the World Bank finances the project.The Headrace Tunnel total length is 13.4 Km and a section of about 12,3km will be excavated by TBM by SELI Overseas (Italy) in subcontract to HCC (India) the General Contractor for the project. The TBM will be delivered ex workshop in March 2016 and it is foreseen to start boring in the second half of 2016.Figure 1 below shows the location of the project and the following Table 1 summarizes the geometrical characteristics of the TBM tunnel."

"The serpentinite massifs of Hitura are located in the municipality of Nivala in Central Finland. The most important sulfide minerals in the ore are pentlandite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite. The ore body consists of amphibolite rocks in contact with serpentinite against mica gneiss. The mean Ni grade of the ore is about 0.7%, and the highest Ni grades have been encountered in close contact. In general, the inner parts of the ore are strongly serpentinized ultramafite and some sulfides have been converted to mackinawite and valleriite. The degree of alteration varies considerably within the ore body and, correspondingly, the grain size of the sulfides varies as well. In this study, flotation tests were done with samples from different zones of the ore body. The flotation test results on the bench scale and plant scale are discussed in terms of the mineralogical features of the ore. Ores in the North Hitura zone differ from those in the South Hitura zone.IntroductionThe Hitura nickel mine, like the entire Nivala area, is part of the Bothnian Svecokarelian schist zone, where numerous Ni-Cu boulders have been discovered since the early 1930s. The Nivala area has therefore been the subject of exploration activities by the Geological Survey of Finland (GSF) and mining companies. The first period of exploration started in 1936, and the Makola nickel deposit, located 3 km south of the Hitura mine, was discovered by GSF in 1937. About 415,000 tonnes of ore were mined at Makola between 1941 and 1954. In 1937, during the exploration and development stage of the Makola mine, boulder tracing and a geophysical survey revealed a significant ultramafic body with some lowgrade Ni-Cu occurrences in the South Hitura zone.In 1961, GSF continued the exploration program in the area and discovered the North Hitura ultramafic complex and its allied Ni-Cu occurrences. In 1964, Outokumpu Oy bought the property and, after underground exploration, comprehensive mineralogical studies, process research and a feasibility study, production started in 1970 (Isohanni et al., 1985)."

Two types of airflow splitting methods for improving longwall dust control were investigated by NIOSH's Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. These methods included a translucent mesh barrier and a staged spray barrier system to confine the shearer-generated dust to the coal extraction side of the long wall face while maintaining a cleaner split of airflow on the opposing worker walkway side of the longwall face. The translucent mesh barrier was shown to provide notable dust control effectiveness up to 60 m downstream of the shearer in both the laboratory experiments and a long wall field evaluation, provided the mesh barrier remains relatively parallel to the airflow. The staged spray barrier system showed marginal dust control effectiveness in the laboratory and subsequently was not field tested.

Mini-projects studying the flotation chemistry of paper de-inking were incorporated to an educational program at Michigan Technological University with support from the paper recycling industry. Interfacial activity of frothing agents, surfactants and polymers in de-inking flotation systems has been studied through flotation, atomic force microscopy, zeta potential, contact angle, surface tension, and froth stability measurements. These fundamental studies were developed to understand microscopic and molecular effects occurring in flotation of ink particles that may lead to improved designs in de-¬inking flotation processes. Fundamental studies indicate that ethoxylated alcohols are efficient frothing agents in flotation and can be used to clean the recovered paper from hydrophobic ink particles. Next, it was further supported in this research that the fatty acids activated by calcium ions act as collectors in flotation of ink particles. Finally, improvements in de-inking flotation are reported in laboratory tests involving aqueous solutions of polymeric flocculants.

El Abra has the world's largest leach, solvent extraction and electrowinning facility, The crushing plant capacity is 120,000 metric tonnes per day and the cathode production capacity is 225,000 metric tonnes per year. The El Abra mine and plant are located in the Province of El Loa, in Region I1 of Chile, 55 km. north of the city of Calama. The ore deposit outcrops on the southern slope of Cerro Pajonal at an altitude of 3,900 to 4,100 meters above sea level. The processing plant and camp facilities are located at a lower 3,300 meter elevation on an alluvial slope, 15 km southeast of the deposit. The operating company, Sociedad Contractual Minera El Abra, is 51% owned by Cyprus Arnax Minerals Company through the Cyprus Climax Metals Company subsidiary and 49% owned by Corporaci6n Nacional del Cobre de Chile (Codelco). The present paper describes the ore reserves, mine operations, crushing, leaching, solvent extraction, electrowinning and infrastructure facilities.

"The Port Mann Main Water Supply Tunnel project provides a critical water main crossing of the Fraser River for the owner, Greater Vancouver Water District (Metro Vancouver). The project consists of two 60-metre-deep slurry panel shafts and a 1-kilometre-long, 3.5-metre excavated diameter tunnel located near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The initial tunnel lining is a precast concrete steel fiber reinforced gasketed segmental lining. The final lining is a 2.1-metre-diameter welded steel pipe. This paper describes the challenges encountered during tunnel construction and the solutions implemented. Key challenges include earth pressure balance tunnelling at up to 6 bar pressure—the highest to date in Canada—a water-crossing without surface access for the majority of the tunnel drive, ground freezing from a river platform for a critical TBM intervention, and boring through cobbles and boulders in dense glacial till. INTRODUCTION Metro Vancouver supplies drinking water to 18 municipalities, one electoral district and one treaty first nation, serving a population of more than 2.4 million residents. Water is collected in three mountainous watersheds to the north of the Greater Vancouver area, in southwestern British Columbia, Canada. To supply the growing demands of Metro Vancouver’s customers, treated water must be conveyed across two significant water bodies: the Burrard Inlet and the Fraser River. The existing Port Mann water main is one of several key links between the watersheds north of Vancouver and the municipalities south of the Fraser River. The Port Mann Main Water Supply Tunnel (PMMWST) is the first of a series of upgrades, to increase capacity, enhance scour protection, and improve seismic resilience. The new tunnel is 3.5 metres (11.5 ft) in diameter and 1 kilometre (0.6 mi) long. When completed, it will contain a new 2.1 metre (7 ft) diameter steel water main that will help ensure the continued, reliable delivery of drinking water to these municipalities, and will more than double the capacity of the existing 1.2 metre diameter main."

During 1981 the Florida phosphate industry produced more than 43 million metric tons of phosphate rock - about one-third of the entire world production and also generated nearly an equal amount of waste clay and waste clay-sized product that requires dewatering and disposal. The material balance of solids and water for a typical Florida phosphate mining operation is shown in Figure 1. Historically, the industry has impounded clay waste (about 60% below ground and 40% above ground) in earthen dams, often as large as 800 acres and occasionally greater than 60 ft. high. The dams have served the triple purpose of: 1. Dewatering initial 3% solid waste clay for process water re-use. 2. A reservoir system to minimize water discharge from the mining area and to capture and store rainwater thus minimizing deep well pumping requirements. 3. The ultimate densification and storage of waste clay.

During the last 30 years, a dramatic increase in the supply of byproduct sulfur substantially reduced the share of the market held by Frasch-mined (non-by-product) sulfur in North America. Even though Canadian sulfur production is not discretionary, the geographic remoteness from the large US markets and the high transportation costs associated with delivering sulfur to those markets has meant that Canadian producers act like discretionary producers in many important ways. They have effectively replaced the US Frasch producers as the cost-marginal sulfur source to large US markets. Implications of this change in market structure include more volatile sulfur prices and longer sulfur price recessions.

New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland dominate Australian black coal production and exports. NSW produced 86 Mt (95 million st) of saleable coal in 1994, a doubling of output since 1980. Asian demand for thermal and coking coal has driven this growth. This high Asian demand is expected to continue and NSW will seek to secure its share. History The history of the New South Wales (NSW) coal industry can be traced to 1797 when coal was first taken from Newcastle to Sydney (Ellis, 1969). At that time, NSW was a British colony, independent from the other colonies, such as Victoria and Queensland. Australia, as a federation of colonies, did not exist until 1901. The Newcastle coal industry grew through the 1800s in line with the growth of the colonies. Several events spurred demand for Newcastle coal. These included: ? The NSW and Victorian gold rushes of the 1850s and associated population growth. ? The development of steamship traffic at the expense of sail. ? The development of railways and town gas supplies. By 1900, Australia was producing 6.4 Mt (7 million st) of coal, most of it from NSW. By then, NSW had established strong export markets in Indonesia, China, Japan and New Zealand. The history of energy consumption is marked by continual competition, changing intensity of use and substitution. From 1900 to 1940, the Queensland, Victorian and Indonesian coal industries developed at the expense of NSW exports. Similarly, New Zealand developed its hydroelectric industry and thus declined as the largest customer for NSW coal. Oil replaced steam in the shipping and railway markets and electricity replaced gas for lighting. Industrial efficiencies also affected coal. Between 1928 and 1938, coal consumed in generating power fell from by 17% on a kilowatt hour basis and, during the same period, the amount of gas produced per ton of coal rose by 18% (Shaw and Bruno). Faced with these pressures, production and exports stagnated. By 1941, Australian black coal production was 14.2 Mt (15.6 million st). NSW's production was 11.7 Mt (12 million st), up only 19% from 1912. Exports had virtually ceased (Fig. 1). In such circumstances, the industry had lost focus. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) conducted a study of mining industry electrical injuries reported to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for the years 2000 to 2009. The findings of that study are detailed in this paper, and serve to characterize the circumstances surrounding electrical injuries and identify causal factors. The study included three tasks: 1) a direct review of mining industry occupational injury data compiled by MSHA, 2) interpretation of the narrative descriptions available for the injuries (from MSHA data) and 3) a separate examination of fatal electrical injuries. Eight-hundred sixty-five electrical injuries were reported during the 10-year period studied, with 39 of those being fatalities. This makes electrical injuries disproportionately fatal with respect to most other types of injuries in mining. Electrical injury rates were higher in coal mining than noncoal mining and, within the coal sector, rates were higher in underground operations than in surface operations. Of the 865 total cases, electrical and machine maintenance or repair activities were involved in 580 (69%), and electricians and mechanics were injured in 362 cases (42%). Of the 39 fatal electrical injuries, 27 (69%) involved electrical maintenance or repair work, and in 21 of these 27 cases, the failure to de-energize, lock-out and tag the circuit was the cause or a contributing factor. Also, contractor employees had a much greater chance of an electrical injury being fatal than did mine operator employees. The top three root causes for fatal electrical injuries were 1) no or inadequate lock-out and tagging, 2) failure of power system components and 3) contact of overhead electrical power lines by mobile equipment.

Acid rain legislation as proposed by President Bush [1], if enacted, will immediately refocus current thinking on the economic decision-making as related to coal preparation facilities. Unit operations currently ignored because of their costs, will become mandatory to coal plant designers and operators to ensure maximum energy recovery and sulfur reduction in the entire coal stream. In anticipation of this need, the U.S. Department of Energy, The Ohio Coal Development Office, EPRI and others are sponsoring research in several areas of coal preparation, and coal plant designers are beginning to consider more innovative techniques as they configure their flowsheets for plants of the future. A new database application for long term production scheduling has been developed for LKAB's Kiruna mine. The scheduler uses a new block data structure whereby the monthly production data for three raw ore products are predetermined on a month-by-month basis for each production area that could be mined within the schedule time horizon. The production schedule is created by assigning the starting dates to the each production area subject to various mining operational constraints such that that the monthly deviations for the production targets are minimized. The system is well integrated into the mine's overall computerized mine planning system.
