INTRODUCTION The $1.1 billion Bajo la Alumbrera Project, started up in 1997 by Minera Alumbrera Limited in the Catamarca Province of Northwestern Argentina, is the first large scale modern mining project to be developed in Argentina. Like many modern Andean mining projects, existing infrastructure was not available to economically transport the 875,000 tonnes of product per year. A variety of alternatives were investigated, including upgrading of existing roads and railroads, slurry pipelines, and combinations of these systems. The final system selected was to combine a 312 km slurry pipeline with an 820 km rail haul to a ship loading facility near Rosario. The concentrate pipeline crosses divergent terrain between the minesite at 2400 m elevation and the filter plant at 400 m elevation. The system selected represented the lowest net present cost alternative by a significant margin. BACKGROUND The Bajo Alumbrera deposit was discovered in 1947 by Professor Cetioni from the University of Tucuman. It is a large (>750 million tonnes) medium-grade (0.6%) copper deposit with high gold values (0.5 g/t*). The deposit outcrops, making it very suitable to modern, large scale, open pit mining techniques using 218 t trucks and 43 m3 shovels. Advances in gravity concentration of the gold helped to demonstrate the feasibility of the project in a study prepared by Fluor Daniel for Minera Alumbrera in 1994. The initial concentrator is the largest green-field concentrator ever constructed, rated at 85,000 t/d. Production will peak at 190,000 tonnes of copper metal and 710,000 troy ounces of gold per year, one of the top 10 copper and top 15 gold producers in the world. * Throughout this paper, the word tonne and abbreviation refer to the metric ton of 1000 kg.

Studies have been carried out to optimize the VCR's mining sys- tem on the basis of synthetic analysis at Fankou Pb-Zn mine in Southern China. The synthetic e- valuation method is proposed for selection of mining alternatives and stope dimension optimization techniques. Theoretic calculation and computer optimization of the fragmentation of rock blasted by multispherical explosive charges are discussed. The mathematical and optimal fragmentation models are built. The optimum model is built for the main mining operations such as drilling, blasting and haulage. Lt can be used to evaluate VCR?s mining projects, select mining parameters and provide design fundations. From the point of view of system research on the geomechanical process, stoping technological process and benefit, the complex method of optimization is proposed for VCR's mining. Using computer simulation, based on this model, the optimal parameters are established and analysed. An effective approach is provided for research on the mining method optimization and getting better economical benefits from the application and improvement of VCR's method.

The Floridan aquifer, which underlies all of Florida, yields water with a sulfate content of less than 50 parts per million in the north-western part and throughout most of the center of the State. In the southern part of Florida and along the most of the east coast, the sulfate concentration generally exceeds 100 parts per million and is as much as 1,700 parts per million. The sulfate concentration tends to be higher in the deeper zones of the aquifer. This map shows the sulfate concentration in the upper part of the aquifer. Sulfate is found in almost all natural water. Sulfate in rainwater is dissolved from impurities and gases in the atmosphere. Rankama and Sahama (1955, p. 314) report that the average sulfate content of rainwater is two parts per million; however, concentrations have been as high as 283 parts per million. Much of the sulfate in rainwater comes from hydrogen sulfide gas which is generated in shallow water on the continental shelves. The combustion of bituminous coal used for heating and industrial purposes seems to be an important local source of sulfate.

A previous investigation showed that corrosion currents estimated from polarization curves for the pyrrhotite-grinding media system under abrasion correlated well with corrosion currents estimated from marked ball wear test data by applying the Faraday's Law. Freshly abraded metal debris were magnetically attracted to pyrrhotite and lowered the rest potentials of the mineral particles, thereby affecting the corrosive wear. The investigation was extended to explore the interactions between a nonmagnetic sulfide mineral, pyrite, and abraded metal debris and their effects on the corrosive wear mechanism. The electrochemical behavior of a three-electrode system involving pyrrhotite, pyrite and grinding media was also investigated as a first step towards elucidating the nature of interactions that occur in the grinding of complex sulfide ores.

The Piedmont province of the southern Appalachians is becoming the focus of interest for many exploration geologists. In the past, only those deposits with significant surface exposure have been exploited. Thus, few deposits have been found and relatively little exploration has been conducted in recent years. Modern geochemical and geophysical techniques can alleviate this problem of concentrating on exposed ore bodies by allowing us to "look through" the soil and saprolite to detect the presence of significant mineralization at depth. This paper will attempt to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of several geo¬chemical exploration techniques in the Piedmont, of Cabarrus and Stanly Counties, North Carolina. The area chosen for the study is shown in Figure 1, lying almost wholly within the Mt. Pleasant quadrangle, North Carolina. The area is on the eastern boundary between the Charlotte belt, a zone of plutonic and intermediate grade metamorphic rocks, and the Carolina Slate belt, a series of complexly interbedded volcanic and sedimentary rocks of predominantly low grade metamorphism. The area is now considered to be a 500 million year old active, continental margin.1 As is typical of most of the piedmont, outcrop is sparse. Figure 2 is a sketch map of the general geology of the area under study, showing the Charlotte belt rocks in the northwestern quadrant and slate belt rocks, to the east. Within the area are a number of old mines and prospects, the most famous of which are the Furniss and the Phoenix mines in Cabarrus County. All are reported to have contained Au and Cu. Ag and Pb were reported from some. A summary of the deposits is given in Table 1. Data used in this study are from three Master's theses conducted at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. 3,3,6 In separate studies, well waters5, B-zone soils3, and vein and float quartz6 from the area described were sampled and analyzed. Each study concluded separately that geochemical anomalies in the vicinity of the ores justify use of that specific sample type in a geo-chemical exploration program. The Don River & Central Waterfront Coxwell Sanitary Bypass Tunnel (CBT) Project in Toronto will extend approximately 10.5 km from Ashbridges Bay Treatment Plant west under Lake Shore Boulevard, north under Bayview Avenue and east through the Don River park area to the Coxwell Ravine Park. The tunnel is currently being mined by using a shielded dual-mode tunnel boring machine (open and close) capable of operating in EPB mode and lined by using a precast concrete segmental tunnel linear with an internal diameter of 6,300 mm and external diameter of 6,900 mm. The CBT is expected to be excavated mainly through shale bedrock of the Georgian Bay Formation, at approximately 50 meters deep. The tunnel crosses a buried bedrock valley in two locations, in the southern portion of the alignment, adjacent to the Don River, and at the northern portion of the alignment approaching the CX-1 shaft. In these two locations, the bedrock cover is expected to be less than 6 meters. The risk of encountering weathered bedrock, significant ground water inflows or surficial soil deposits through these buried valleys was identified during the design phase. The contract required the TBM to be designed with the ability to probe drill ahead of the TBM and convert to EPB mode if necessary, to cross this area. This paper will discuss the additional exploration that was performed by the contractor to identify the extent of this buried valley, the plan going into the zone of potential weathered shale, and the actual conditions encountered.

A research program is currently in progress at the University of British Columbia to determine the potential of composite cable bolt reinforcement in Canadian mines. Several prototypes of glass fibre cable bolts have been tested. Their evaluation consisted of lab testing at the University of British Columbia, United States Bureau of Mines (Spokane) and trial installations at Detour Lake, Winston Lake, and Myra Falls Mines. A market analysis of cable bolts within the Canadian mining industry has been completed. Fibre reinforced polymer composites have a high potential as cable bolt reinforcement in mining applications. They prove to be a viable alternative to steel cable bolting.

Murer Company, Andermatt, Switzerland, can claim to have done pioneer work in the construction of inclined shafts. This happened in 1968/69, when we decided to bore with a Wirth tunnel borer an inclined shaft, 1100 m in length, 3.0 m in diameter, and with a grade of 65%, in the 2400 kilo pascall per sq. cm granite of the Montblanc Massive. The whole excavation was accomplished in ten months which, at least for European conditions, can be claimed as a record. It was, at least to our knowledge, the first inclined shaft to be bored full-face (Fig. 1). Encouraged by the experiences and performances attained at Châtelard, we approached other projects of the same kind. We were awarded, together with Hochtief Ltd., Essen, a contract from Schluchseewerke, Freiburg, Germany, in December 1969, for the construction of a penstock for the Hornbergstufe at Wehr, Germany, with a diameter of 6.3 m. This inclined shaft with a grade of 55% is located in Schwarzwalder granite with a compressive strength of up to 2000 kilo pascall per sq. cm, about 31,000 psi. As no exact geological data were available about the rock to be worked, and a fault zone from 80 to 150 m long had to be faced, as well as a few individual fissures of varying thickness, it was decided to use the multi-stage method. The 3-m diam tunnelling machine which had driven the oblique shaft at Châtelard had now finished work, and an immediate beginning was made with driving the pilot staft. This was very welcome to the contractor, since exact information about the type of rock present and the inflows of water was required immediately and before the final borehole diameter was fixed, for the purpose of dimensioning the supports to be subsequently installed.

"Since 1984, the date of the first recorded fatality involving a remote controlled continuous mining machine, 38 miners in the United States have been killed when they were struck by a continuous mining machine. Proximity detection is a valuable tool for preventing fatalities, and the use of these systems is expected to significantly improve safety. Proximity detection provides a means to prevent accidents like these. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a series of underground tests to evaluate the accuracy and repeatability of proximity detection systems under a number of conditions such as varying the orientation and height of the personal wearable device (PWD), moving the PWD close to the trailing cable, and activating the machine’s mining mode. At the 2014 SME Annual Meeting, results from tests on first-generation proximity detection systems were presented. This paper will provide results from the similar tests performed with second-generation systems. The results show that performance has improved. For example, the negative impact of PWD orientation and the trailing cable has been reduced. However, some inconsistencies remain. Notably, performance changes dramatically when mining mode is activated. INTRODUCTION Since 1984 there have been 38 fatalities involving striking and pinning of the operator and other workers by the continuous mining machine (CMM) [1]. In August 2011, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) published a proposed regulation that would require proximity detection systems on all continuous mining machines except full-face machines [2]. Proximity detection systems are designed to stop machine motion to protect miners from striking/pinning hazards. Several MSHA-approved proximity detection systems are commercially available. MSHA estimates that of the 38 fatal striking and pinning accidents that have occurred since 1984 involving CMMs, the use of proximity detection could have been a preventative factor in at least 28 cases [1]. Furthermore, MSHA estimates that proximity detection could prevent 20% of all deaths throughout the industry [3]. NIOSH researchers have been involved in the development and testing of proximity detection technology since creating the HASARD system [4] and have recently conducted research intended to develop more advanced proximity detection technology for CMMs [5,6,7,8]. In addition, NIOSH has also conducted research investigating how the signals of a proximity detection system propagate [9,10] and have developed a novel method for determining the location of a personal wearable device (PWD) relative to the magnetic field generators [11,12]."

A good understanding of the hardness of ore being handled and processed in a mining operation can significantly improve operational efficiencies by providing valuable data to support decision-making through the mining value chain (drilling, blasting, comminution). This study presents the results from the application of Machine Learning (ML) to predict rock hardness using various geophysical and geochemical features. Core samples from a mine site were logged using a multi-sensor core logging system. Measurements including ultrasonic p-wave and s-wave velocity, elemental concentration via portable XRF, and Leeb Hardness, were measured every 2 cm along the length of the core. The ML model was set up to predict the Leeb Hardness using the elemental concentrations and ultrasonic velocities as predictors. The Leeb Hardness values were grouped into three bins and used as a classification target for the ML models. Various ML models, including linear regression, support vector machines, decision tree, XGBoost, Random Forest, K-Nearest Neighbors, and Naïve Bayes were tested. The model performance demonstrated that the Random Forest and XGBoost models produced the highest accuracy of 74-91%. Random forest and XGBoost were then selected to perform regression models to estimate a Leeb hardness value rather than a hardness class. These models were able to estimate the Leeb hardness value by 4.57-4.87 % error.

This paper will describe the benefits of utilizing the decision support system, DSS to support the methodology of structured decision-making in the mining environment. Expressing plan verse performance across mining phases and functions compared with the actual and trends to evaluate performance. b. Creating alternate courses of action and the implications up and downstream. 3. It will review the current condition were although a multitude of technologies resolve multi variable issues they do not interact in a way that assists decision makers throughout the organization in making high-quality decisions that will push the overall performance envelope. 4. The paper will show the benefits of integrating military methodologies to resolve multi variable complexed issues (operational, financial and other), operating in changing environments in order to meet time sensitive objectives with restricted resources. This is achieved by creating a shared situational awareness thru incorporating information from a multitude of data generating agents, creating COA, selecting the appropriate and turning it into a plan. The paper will discuss the implementation and suggest a path.

To gain insight into the current status of pillar design practice in the underground coal mines of United States, a survey has been undertaken in the late 1993 and early 1994. A total of 552 room-and-pillar mines and 75 longwall mines have been surveyed to collect general, geological and mine plan information. The collected information are critically analyzed with special emphasis on the pillar design criteria adopted in these mines. A safety factor analysis has also been carried out for the pillars in room-and -pillar mines.

The electrochemical oxidation of chalcopyrite in the absence of-a chemical oxidant was studied in ammonia/ammonium sulfate solutions by anodically polarizing electrodes prepared from massive chalcopyrite. The effects of pH, cupric and ammonia ion concentration were systematically evaluated. Kinetic parameters were obtained from the anodic charge-transfer regions of the anodic polarization curves. Increasing ammonia and hydroxyl ion concentrations increased the rate of oxidation. A mechanism is proposed which explains the first order dependence of (NH3) and (OR) associated with a single electron transfer process. An empirical relationship which accurately describes the dependence of the rest potential (i.e. zero current potential) on solution composition is also given.

"INTRODUCTION “Sampling is the process of taking a small portion of an article such that the consistency of the portion shall be representative of the whole” (Baxter and Parks, 1939) “An orebody is a mixture of minerals in proportions that vary in different parts of the mass. As a consequence the proportion of contained metals also varies from place to place. Therefore, a single sample taken in any particular place would not contain the same proportion of metals as does the orebody as a whole except by a highly improbable coincidence. The probable error, which would be very large if only one sample were taken, decreases with the number of samples, but it never disappears completely unless the samples are so numerous and so large that their aggregate is equal to the orebody itself, in which case the orebody would be completely used up in the process of sampling. Since carrying sampling to such an extreme would defeat its own purpose, some probable error is always present in actual cases and the practical objective is to reduce this probable error to allowable limits. This means balancing the number of samples against the desired accuracy; if there are not enough samples the result is unreliable; if there are too many, the time and expense of taking them is excessive.” (McKinstry, et al., 1948). In an actual orebody, the accuracy of sampling depends not alone on the number of samples but also on proper distribution of them throughout the orebody, for it would obviously be incorrect to take all of the samples either in a rich part or a lean part. Therefore it is important to select the places in such a way that all parts of the orebody will be represented. “For those who cultivate land which is alike arid, heavy , and barren, and in which they sow seeds, do not make so great a harvest as those who cultivate a fertile and mellow soil and sow their grain in that. A comparison of gold, platinum and sulfide ion selective electrodes was made in this investigation for determination of Eh in solutions containing sulfide ions as a model system. The comparison was made in terms of the accuracy of the measured response, response time, pH dependence, and reproducibility of measurement. In addition, the sensitivity of each electrode towards changes in sulfide ion concentration was measured in terms of the change in measured Eh per decade change in concentration of sulfide ions. On the basis of a detailed investigation of the electrode processes occurring at the surface of gold and platinum electrodes, it was postulated that within the pH range investigated these electrodes respond to changes in the hydrosulfide ion, HS-, concentration in solution. In comparison, the sulfide ion selective electrode is known to respond to changes in the sulfide ion, S-, activity in solution. Although the potentials measured with gold and platinum electrodes were mixed potentials, pretreatment procedures can be used to obtain a signal suitable for process control. For control of sulfide ions in flotation pulps, the use of a gold electrode pretreated at 1.0 V with respect to a standard hydrogen electrode is recommended.

Natural graphite has been known for many centuries, having first been reported as a distinct mineral form by Gessner in 1565. At that time, graphite was used extensively as pencil "lead" because of the ease with which it marks paper. It is a black, unctuous material found as flakes, lumps, or needles in scattered locations throughout the world. The less crystalline, or "amorphous", natural graphites are thought to have been formed from coal under conditions of high temperature and pressure. The more crystalline varieties, such as those mined in Ceylon, probably were precipitated from molten solutions or were pyrolyzed from gaseous carbon compounds. Recognition of the good thermal and electrical conductivity of graphite, together with its highly refractory nature, led to an increasing number of appli¬cations for this material. Clay and pitch bonded natural graphite has been used in crucibles, refractories, foundry facings, and other high-temperature appli¬cations. These forms constitute the most important current uses for natural graphite in the United States. Other products containing natural graphite include batteries, lubricants, pencils, brake linings, etc.

"Around Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota, the local geology includes the St. Peter Sandstone, which is easily minable and has facilitated construction of interceptor tunnels for storm water and sanitary tunnels since the 1800s. The elevation of the geologic units allowed gravity-driven flows from the downtown areas all the way to the Mississippi River. Through many years of service, some of these tunnels have experienced degradation and require maintenance. Additionally, increased stormwater surface runoff can result in internal pressurization of the tunnels, accelerating degradation. Because structural failure or collapse of any of these interceptor tunnels would create a significant repair challenge, the city of Minneapolis has been inspecting and designating tunnels in its system for periodic review and repair. One of these, the St. Mary’s/Hiawatha tunnel, was rehabilitated using a grouting program. A hydrologic model was also used to improve understanding of pressurization events during some storms, leading to construction of a near-surface pressure dissipation chamber to provide increased hydraulic capacity. BACKGROUND The St. Mary’s/Hiawatha tunnel in Minneapolis has three segments; the first two were constructed in 1942 and the third was added in 1987 (Figure 1). Segment 1 is approximately 4,700 feet in length and outlets to the Mississippi River. Segment 2 intersects Segment 1 approximately 3,500 feet upstream of the river outlet and continues for approximately 2,500 feet in a southeasterly direction. The third and newest segment is approximately 500 feet long. There are four different cross sections of tunnel along the entire system.Originally, tunnel construction often consisted of mining the St. Peter sandstone with a pressurized water lance and constructing wood lagging support (Payne, 1967). An underdrain was generally installed below the invert during construction; this resulted in localized dewatering and provided groundwater control during construction. Non-reinforced concrete liner sections were cast in place. Often void space existed between the tunnel liner and the native sandstone bedrock. These voids, particularly in the crown, prevent direct contact between the liner and the bedrock."

The sedimentation and dewatering characteristics of flocculated slurries are determined by the size and density of the flocs. Studies of the formation and growth of flocs reveal that floc size is limited by breakage of the agglomerates due to shear in the suspension. Floc density measurements indicate that there is an inverse relationship between size and density. This relationship appears to be determined primarily by the nature of the solid particles, especially the size distribution, but it appears that agitation of the suspension can lead to some densification of the flocs, in addition to breakage. It follows that both size and density can be controlled to a significant extent by regulating the physical conditions (agitation, method of flocculant addition etc.) during flocculation. The use of physical floc conditioning to control the sedimentation and dewatering (filtration) behavior of flocculated, fine-particle suspensions is evaluated in terms of its effects on floc size end density.

Today many small diameter tunnels are being constructed in Metropolitan areas and towns as transmission holes for utilities such as water, electricity, natural gas and sewage, to name a few. These tunnels function as utilities beneath the streets, highways, railways, and other structures where open-cut techniques are impractical for any one of a number of reasons. Many such bores range in diameter from 15 to 72 inches and in lengths from 100 to 500 feet. Auger drills with auger type heads have long been used to bore these "road crossings" as they are usually termed; however, many such crossings must be bored in rock with rock-boring heads. Rock with a compressive strength of 15,000 p.s.i. and higher seems to present the greatest challenge for the contractor. These rocks include most igneous and metamorphic rocks and some sedimentary rocks. In general, this grasps most granites, basalts, gneisses, slates, schists, quartzites, limestones, and cherts. In the past ten years boring machines have been developed and used to excavate road crossings through hard rock. Many crossings have been successfully excavated using these machines, and the degree of success has increased substantially in the last few years. A variety of machines have been built and manufactured to bore most rock in a range of diameters up to 72 inches. The machines vary in capabilities, size ranges, and designs but all perform the same basic task and function of boring horizontally. Incidently, here the term horizontal implies horizontal or within five degrees of horizontal. "1. INTRODUCTIONTunnel face stability is one of the most important consideration in New Austrian Tunneling Method. In general, if all of the material properties of ground can be obtained through the field investigations, the tunnel face behavior can be predicted using numerical simulation prior to tunnel construction. However, estimating the safety of a tunnel face is difficult, especially in cases where the ground is very weak such as in an urban area.In this study, numerical analyses of tunnel excavation in very weak ground conditions, such as a low cohesion and low internal friction angle, were carried out. The relationship between the average shear strain distribution on the tunnel face and the overburden was analyzed. This relationship estimates the shear strain of the tunnel face relative to the critical shear strain obtained by the ground properties. The critical shear strain was defined as an allowable value for the maximum shear strain. We proposed the allowable overburden as tunnel face stability index (TFI) that satisfies the critical shear strain criterion of ground. Finally, a design chart of the allowable overburden for various cohesion values and friction angles of ground was created. This chart is useful in the preliminary tunnel design stage to judge the necessity of additional counter measures against normal tunnel support design.2. WEAK GROUND MODELING AND ANALYSIS PROCEDURE2.1 Setting material propertiesWith reference to a past study1), the material properties were adopted on the basis of material properties in the standard worst rock classification case called “DII”2) for standard support pattern of weak ground in Japan. The typical material properties for “DII” are listed in Table 1. In addition, Fig.1 shows the distribution of the representative weak ground according to cohesion and internal friction angle. When the internal friction angle is relatively high and the cohesion is weak, the ground is categorized as sandy ground. Furthermore, when the internal friction angle is low and the cohesion is strong, the ground is categorized as clayey ground."
