The Mantos Blancos copper-silver district is located in northern Chile about 45 kilometers northeast of Antofagasta, as shown in Figure 1. Disseminated and veinlet copper and copper-iron sulfides containing economically significant silver values are hosted by andesitic to rhyolitic volcanic rocks of probable Jurassic age (Chavez, 1983). Field, mineralogical, textural and lithochemical evidence show that three major alteration types may be recognized within the district: (1) district-wide sodium metasomatism, manifested as albitization of feldspars and development of albite veinlets and pore-fillings, (2) local to widespread, incipient to intense addition (chloritization) or removal (bleaching) of magnesium and iron and (3) local to widespread, moderate to intense hematitization, usually spatially associated with bornite-digenite-covellite (as specularite) or digenite-covellite-chalcocite (as red hematite staining with or without specularite) mineralization. Carbonatization, occurring as veins, veinlets, vesicle fillings and irregular patches of calcite, varies in magnitude of development but is widespread. Sericitization of feldspars and groundmass is only locally intense yet is generally present as incipient alteration throughout the district. The district-wide albitization of the Mantos Blancos volcanic sequence has altered what were originally more potassic and calcic, less sodic, rocks to what are now more properly referred to as keratophyres (Battey, 1955; Gilluly, 1935, Hughes, 1975). The petrographic and lithochemical characteristics of the three major alteration types noted above are summarized below.

Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (SIMS) was used to study copper ion adsorption, and its effect on subsequent sulfide collector adsorption, on pyrite and pyroxene minerals under flotation related conditions. Copper was found to adsorb on both of these minerals and cause enhanced sulfide collector adsorption. The distribution and depth profile of copper and collector on these mineral surfaces were obtained by using SIMS in the imaging mode. The results of this study have provided a valuable insight to understanding pyrite and gangue flotation observed frequently in operating plants.

"China is rich in tungsten resource, but they are mainly associated minerals. The similar flotability of scheelite, fluorite, and calcite resulted in the difficult separation by flotation. This work summarized the current situation and the development of flotation reagents, technological process, and mineral processing equipments in China. Fatty acid served as the collector and water glass was the depressant to expand the flotability differences in traditional flotation technology. However the water glass inevitably influenced the flotation of tungsten minerals to a large extend, and the suppressed fluorite was difficult to recover by flotation. Abundant water glass lead to the bad settleability of the tailings and the tail water was difficult to circulate, resulted in serious environmental problems. Recent study proved that the selectivity of benzene armour hydroxyl oxime acid (BAHA) salts was adequate for the separation of tungsten minerals from fluorite, calcite and most silicate minerals without any depressant. By this way, sodium silicate was canceled completely in tungsten flotation, greatly improving the recovery of tungsten and the environmental problems caused by tail water treatment would be solved fundamentally. TUNGSTEN RESOURCES AND DISTRIBUTION IN CHINA China is rich in tungsten resources and the proved reserves accounted for 60% of the world's reserves [1]. However the wolframite has been dried up and the scheelite resources had become the main resource of the tungsten metal. Table 1 showed the most large and superlarge scheelite deposits in China. China has more than 40 large and superlarge scheelite deposits and the total metallic deserves is more than 3 million ton [2]. But most of the deposits were low-grade and the associated relationship was complicated. For example, scheelite was usually associated with wolframite, molybonite, bismuthinite, pyrite, fluorite, and calcite in Shizhuyuan and Yaogangxian mine."

The Empire concentrator currently processes magnetite ore from the Empire pit which is approaching the end of its mine life. Over the past two years plant wide tests have been run to access the plant capability of processing ore from the neighboring sister Magnetite pit. The neighboring pit presents challenges to the Empire plant due to its higher feed grade, finer liberation size and higher percent silica which require additional secondary grinding and concentrating capacity to achieve concentrate grade. In October, November and December, teachers at the National Science Teachers' Association (NSTA) area conventions were lured to visit the Minerals Education Coalition (MEC) booth by the promise of free rocks, video tapes, and literature on earth science topics. Teachers were content to stand in lines that at times took as much as an hour and a half to progress through the exhibit. Adding to their interest was the opportunity to converse with people from the minerals industry who were staffing the booth. The MEC was formed by a group of associations and companies in the minerals industry. They felt the need to educate the public about the current-day minerals industry and how it affects everyone's life. The American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers, Inc. (AIME) underwrote the major expenses of exhibit space and exhibitor services at all three conventions in 1997. SME members have been active in staffing and chairing the NSTA exhibit booth. But they represented only about one-third of the volunteers for the booth. Additional volunteers were drawn from local minerals companies, associations, interested teachers and other support groups. (See donors list on page 64.) In 1997, the conventions were held in Pittsburgh, PA, Denver, CO and Nashville, TN. The local SME GEM Committees chaired Pittsburgh and Denver and The Rogers Group Inc. supplied the chairperson in Nashville. Each exhibit relies on a local committee to plan and run the booth. Support is available from the GEM Projects Coordinator at SME headquarters. Usually the chair of the committee is drawn from the local SME membership. It is easy to see why the MEC booth is so popular. Free literature, videos, posters, workshop packets and rock specimens were handed out to about 5,500 science teachers at the three sites. Feedback from the attending teachers was overwhelmingly positive: "Who do we thank for these great materials?" Some of those great materials included Caterpillar's outstanding donation of Common Ground videos and teacher packets for Pittsburgh, Denver and Nashville for every teacher expected to attend. Placer Dome sent enough What's a Mine coloring books and It Comes from a Mine activity books for teachers at all three sites. Newmont supplied all teachers with an excellent poster describing gold processing. Women in Mining Education Foundation had plenty of its classroom activity handouts. The American Coal Foundation provided a list of its educational materials that are given out free to teachers who request them on school letterhead. The National Mining Association had its Facts About Minerals and Facts About Coal available. US Borax provided the funding to reproduce the NMA black and white posters that were published as inserts in Mining Voice magazine. In addition, each site had other materials chosen by the local committees to round out their selections. At each exhibit site, committees raise between $8,000 and $12,000 in cash donations from industry to support the high overhead of producing this exhibit. Usually, there are between 12 and 18 different rock specimens representing a range of mineral ores from aggregates to the metal ores. The committee arranged to have these donated (along with the freight charges to ship them to the site). Literature is also donated by the industry. It covers a diverse spectrum from basic information on rocks and minerals to posters, flow charts, videos and coloring books. Other donations include storage space before the event, haulage of items to the hall and door prizes. These exhibits could not have been staged without the network of SME Local Sections and the able chairs and committees at each site. At this time, credit should be given to their extensive donation of time and effort.

Disa Technologies Inc. provides innovative, sustainable solutions for mineral processing and remediation through its patented High-Pressure Slurry Ablation (HPSA) technology. HPSA processes solid feed material in slurry form, propelled by high pressure pumps through opposing nozzles that generate impinging jets within a collision housing. This process induces particle-to-particle collisions in a high energy zone, creating intergranular fractures along grain boundaries. In our batch scale and continuous operating testing, we have found that controlling key processing variables such as nozzle velocity, slurry solids percentage, and the number of passes can allow for controlled size reduction and maximum mineral liberation. Since 2018, Disa Technologies has demonstrated the versatility of HPSA by testing it on diverse materials, including phosphate, copper, uranium, vanadium, zinc, rare earth elements, lithium, nickel, mineral sands, gold tailings, and more. The intent of this paper is to present an overview of our test results describing in detail impacts on size reduction, recovery, and grade with a focus on HPSA's adaptability across ore types. Looking forward, it explores the potential to process materials such as DR-grade iron, clay, PGMs, bauxite, and various tailings. Additionally, it examines planned advancements in HPSA technology, including optimized nozzle spacing, higher capacity models, improved tonnage-to-footprint ratios, enhanced maintenance features, and expanded nozzle configurations.

Conventional wisdom in the mineral processing industry leads one to believe that pressure oxidation of refractory carbonaceous (preg-robbing) ores is not a practical approach to process development. Initial acid pressure oxidation testing on carbonaceous sulfide ores at the Twin Creeks Mine supported this conventional wisdom. After testing other refractory process options, including air and oxygen enriched roasting, Santa Fe Pacific Gold decided to take a second look at pressure oxidation, using conditions outside the normal range of conventional practice. A combination of very fine grinding and high operating temperature and pressure resulted in significant increases in gold extraction. This paper details the effect of operating parameters developed for Twin Creeks on gold recovery, sulfur oxidation, carbon oxidation/passivation and preg-robb through the laboratory and pilot plant investigations.

"The overall goal of this study is to develop a suitable flow sheet to extract rare earth elements (REEs) from coal ash. A total of 14 coal samples of different ranks were examined for REE concentration, and an anthracite coal sample with the highest REE concentration of more than 700 ppm in the coal ash was selected for REE extraction tests. This paper reports on the results of the experimental program completed in the first part of the study, which included hightemperature leaching with nitric acid followed by solvent extraction tests using various organic extractants, namely, tributyl phosphate, Cyanex 572, di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) and their combinations. A 4×2×2 experimental design was used to conduct a total of 32 high-temperature leaching tests by varying acid molarity at four levels, solids content at two levels and leaching time at two levels. The highest recovery rates of 90 percent for light rare earth elements (LREEs) and 94 percent for heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) were obtained from the optimum leaching test conditions while maintaining impurity recovery to the leachate at less than 40 percent. D2EHPA was found to be the best extractant in this solvent extraction test series, providing an REE recovery rate of nearly 99 percent.IntroductionGlobal demand for rare earth elements (REEs) and other strategic metals is increasing rapidly due to their use in a variety of advanced technological applications, with more than 100 kt of rare earth oxides used worldwide on an annual basis. The United States has less than 10 percent of the world reserves of REE mineral deposits, and in 2013 imported more than 60 percent of its rare earth oxides from other countries, mainly China (United States Geological Survey, 2017). China’s institution of export quotas has significantly reduced supply to the United States, raising the urgency of finding new ways of producing REEs and/ or substitutes. Coal combustion byproducts, which are usually discarded as waste materials, are known to contain REEs in low concentrations that could be extracted with a suitable process flow sheet. This may be a worthwhile route to pursue, considering the short supply of rare earth minerals and the abundance of coal ash in thousands of ash ponds in the United States. More than 110 Mt of coal combustion byproducts are produced annually in the process of satisfying the country’s need for electricity (American Coal Ash Association, 2016), and less than 50 percent of these byproducts are being successfully used in various applications, with the remainder dumped as waste materials in landfills and ash ponds."

Introduction Autogenous, semi-autogenous, and conventional grinding circuits are used to process ores. Current emphasis, though, is towards the use of the first two systems. The reason is the generally lower initial investment required for an autogenous or semi-autogenous circuit as compared to a conventional comminution circuit. However, the effect of operating costs that will significantly affect overall comminution economics is not considered in this evaluation. About 70% of the energy in a mineral processing plant is used in the comminution circuit. Until the 1974 oil embargo, energy was relatively inexpensive. Since that time, the cost of energy has escalated 40-fold. As a result, energy cost now forms a significant portion of operating costs in comminution. According to a survey conducted by General Electric Co. (Powers, 1982), the price of electricity will continue to rise 15% to 20% per year, in spite of the current oil glut. Both autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding circuits consume more energy than the conventional comminution circuit. Higher consumption ranging from 16% to 35% has been reported in the literature (Bassarear, 1982; Gjerdrum. 1979; Betts, 1982; and Christie, 1979). Consequently, even a small increase in energy costs is likely to have a significant impact on operating costs. Therefore, the economic decision of selecting an optimal comminution circuit is important. More than ever before, it is now critical to include in the evaluation of communition circuits not only the capital costs, but also the operating costs; in particular, the expected energy cost over the life of the operation. Failure to do this may lead to a less than optimal comminution circuit. Design A comminution system should be designed only after bench-scale or pilot plant testing of a representative sample. Conventional crushing and grinding circuits can be designed on the basis of the Bond Work Index (Rowland and Kjos, 1980). Over the years, sizing of full-scale rod and ball mills from Bond Work Index data has become well established. Autogenous and semi-autogenous mills cannot be sized based on bench-scale tests. Pilot plant tests are necessary to determine the amenability of the ore, critical size buildup, and power requirements. For this study, conventional and semi-autogenous grinding circuits were designed for ore throughput of 12, 24, 36, 48, 72, and 90 kt/d (13,200, 26,400, 39,600, 52,000, 79,200, and 99,000 stpd). Rod and ball mills were scaled up on the basis of the Bond Work Index. A two-stage semi-autogenous grinding circuit was designed on the basis of pilot plant test results. This paper considers mining ventures occurring in rural communities in Galicia, Spain and Western Australia, Australia. It compares and contrasts the communities where mining is taking precedence over other industries, examining the potential land use conflicts and the future of both the communities and the mines currently operating there. The Galician case study, Trevinca, is located 200 km inland and was once a primary producing area, notable for its scenic alpine landscapes, which have since been developed for small scale tourism purposes. The Australian case study, Boddington is located 100 km inland in what has been a highly productive farming area. Mining was a marginal industry in the case study areas but due to the comparative devaluing of agriculture and tourism and the increased value of mining outputs, mining has increased in scale and economic importance. This paper will consider the environmental, social and economic impacts that have occurred in both the case study localities. Where there have been land use conflicts, strategies for minimising the adverse outcomes will be considered.

The existence of water is one of the most effective factors in deterioration of natural building stones. In the process of deterioration, capillary water absorption is the most significant procedure of water penetration into the building stones. Pyroclastic rocks have been widely utilized as building stone especially in historical buildings and monuments since ancient times in the Central Anatolia in Turkey. Nowadays, this type of rocks is used in the restoration of historical buildings as well as in the construction of modern buildings. Pyroclastic rocks are highly susceptible to deterioration process. Capillary rise has a significant influence on water penetration into building stones. Therefore, it is quite important to identify the factors affecting the values of capillarity, capillary rising speed, and capillary rise that define capillary water absorption in these rocks. To this end, pyroclastic rock samples in different textures were compiled from the Cappadocia region, in Central Anatolia. First, petrographic, mineralogical, geochemical, physical, and pore diameter distribution properties of the samples were determined in the laboratory. Then, capillarity values with capillary rise and capillary rise speeds dependent on time were established. Based on the data obtained, correlation coefficients between matrix percentage and capillary water absorption rate and capillary rise values of pyroclastic rocks were calculated and found to be as 0.850 and 0.891, respectively. Thus, the article proposes a new empirical equation to practically calculate the capillary rise value depending on the matrix percentage (MP) and median pore diameter (MPD) values.

The control of quartz levels in the respirable dust requires an approach different from that used to control respirable coal dust. The unique physical properties of quartz have to be utilized when developing quartz dust control systems. Also, techniques that modify the surface properties of quartz dust so that conventional dust control measures are effective should be explored. For instance, the wetting characteristics of quartz can be modified so that the capture efficiency of the quartz dust can be improved. Foam sprays assist in modifying surface wetting characteristics. This paper summarizes the results of a study that was conducted in an operating mine to evaluate the effectiveness of a compressed air foam spray system installed under the boom of a continuous miner and directed so as to cover the pan and the gathering arm. The objectives of the study were to evaluate the effect of the foam underboom sprays on (1) the respirable dust concentration in the ambient air, (2) the quartz concentration in the respirable dust. The engineering design of the foam generation and delivery system is described in the paper, followed by a description of the mine and the dust sampling strategy. The data were analyzed to study the effect of foam on respirable dust and quartz concentrations at the miner cab, face return and the intake. The results of the data analyses and costs are presented in the paper.

Due to a tight ash constraint on the clean coal product and difficult middlings washability characteristics, a considerable amount of coal was being lost in the jig middlings at the Monterey No. 2 Mine. An investigation was conducted into circuitry to recover this lost coal with minimal effect on the total clean coal ash. A reverse two-stage hydrocyclone system cleaning at low specific gravities was selected. This system is currently recovering approximately 5.8 kg/s (23 tph) of 11.5% to 12.5% ash coal. The specific gravity of separation for the system is about 1.5 and the probable error is 0.13.

Cyanidation has established itself as the main process for extracting gold from ores in this century. However, many ores exhibit refractoriness to the conventional cyanidation process. The main cause of the refractoriness is generally the presence of carbon, tellurium, and sulfides, particularly those of antimony, arsenic, and iron. The problem is usually solved by either modifying the cyanidation conditions or providing an oxidation pretreatment. This paper presents results from studies that help in understanding the causes of refractoriness of various gold ores. This is followed by a discussion of many processes that have been developed to solve the problem such as intensive cyanidation, pressure cyanidation, carbon-in-leach cyanidation, and pretreatment processes such as roasting, chemical oxidation, autoclave oxidation, and bacterial oxidation.

A 1989 FIPR characterization study of the future phosphate resources in Florida showed that MgO would be a problem with both the pebble and concentrate as phosphate mining moves deeper. Since the ratio of concentrate to pebble will become higher and higher in the future, reducing Mg content in the concentrate by a small margin would allow blending of a large portion of the high-dolomite pebble. This research was conducted based on that logic. The following six approaches were tested for reducing MgO content in the flotation concentrate: (1) Adding a dolomite depressant in the rougher flotation step; (2) Dolomite flotation on the rougher concentrate with and without grinding; (3) Dolomite flotation on the cleaner concentrate with and without grinding; (4) Scrubbing the flotation feed; (5) Scrubbing the rougher concentrate; (6) Scrubbing the cleaner concentrate. Successful methods include adding a dolomite depressant in the rougher flotation, dolomite flotation on the cleaner concentrate with grinding, and scrubbing the cleaner concentrate in quartz sand. These techniques could reduce MgO content in the final concentrate by 20-40%. The flotation process could achieve a concentrate with the lowest MgO content, but it is the most expensive approach. Adding a dolomite is inexpensive and easy, but the effect is limited. Overall, scrubbing may be the most promising technology for this purpose.

The present study has investigated the bioleachability of low-grade and high-grade pyritic gold ores and the extraction of gold from the leach residues of bioleaching with thiourea solutions. Final gold extractions as high as 96% were obtained from the high-grade ore and above 93% from the low-grade ore. The gold extraction was found to follow the extent of pyrite biooxidation. Using a cyclic voltammetric technique and carbon-paste-FeS2 electrode it was found that the semiconductor pyrite oxidation involves many intermediate electrochemical reactions. Furthermore, the oxidation is solid-state diffusion controlled as suggested by chronoamperometric and chronopotentiometric measurements.Using Sand's approach, the activation energy of solid-state diffusion biooxidation of pyrite was determined to be AEa=22.4 kJ. A generalized model for the mechanisms of pyrite oxidation has been presented.

"In coal and mineral processing, several numeric parameters are used to quantify the separation performance of unit operations. For density-based separations, the partition curve is used as the starting point for many stages of diagnostic analyses. The curve is often quantified by its midpoint slope sharpness, and this single value is subsequently used for technical evaluation, benchmarking, and comparison. While this analytical approach does depict misplacement by relative density class, it inherently prioritizes middling separation and does not consider process economics or the micro-price value of individual classes. Alternatively, the organic efficiency parameter does consider process economics; however, it does not reveal information on the root cause of lost revenue or misplacement. In this paper, a new analytical approach is introduced which reconciles the technical misplacement data derived from the partition curve with the economic data derived from micro-pricing. The result is a new analytical procedure which reflects a better use of performance data. INTRODUCTION Partition curves are commonly used in the characterization, evaluation, and simulation of various physical separators. In mineral processing, partition curve analysis is routinely applied to hydrocyclones, screens, and density separators. Graphically, the partition curve depicts the recovery of particles as a function of a physical property on which the separation is based (e.g. particle density, size, magnetic susceptibility, etc.). Given the probabilistic nature of many real separators, the partition curve often exhibits a characteristic “S” shape (Fig. 1), similar to a cumulative normal distribution. Other geometric features of the curve are also depicted in Fig. 1, including the high and low closeout (or bypass) values, the midpoint slope, and the separation cut point (property value with 50% recovery). Partition curve analysis was originally proposed to evaluate coal washability (Tromp, 1937). Given the limited computational resources at the time, the analytical methods relied heavily on graphical construction and interpretation of the curve. Owing to the simplicity of the calculation and interpretation, many of these graphical approaches are still widely used for performance analysis today. The most common calculations are based on the slope of the partition curve at the midpoint. Increased slopes correspond to enhanced separation performance, since a perfect separation exhibits a stepwise transition from 0 to 1 at the desired cut point (i.e. an infinitely large slope). One common formulation of this slope, the Ecart Probable (Ep), is derived by evaluating the slope between the 25% and 75% recovery points:"

Business planning in the coal' industry revolves around the production and quality forecast. It is difficult to accurately estimate costs and revenues until the production forecast is made. At mines where production comes from multiple sections, quality is tied to each section's production. Blending becomes a part of the planning process. In order to respond to rapidly changing business climate, a reliable program is needed to accurately forecast the effects of changes in key parameters affecting the production. This paper discusses an efficient, intuitive, and economical approach to underground coal mine planning program which uses a PC-based relational database as the programming platform to forecast production and quality. The program was developed at a major coal company. The relational nature of the production planning data, the programming algorithm, and the underlying principles are discussed in this paper.

An automated method of microscopy for determining the pyrite size distribution on two base coals that were crushed to 28 mesh x 0 has been developed. Polished epoxy-bound coal pellets were prepared and examined by a Zeiss IBAS image analyzer utilizing a program developed from provided software. Pyrite size distribution determination is considered a necessary first step in pyrite characterization that could lead to successful predictions, by microscopy, of a coal's theoretical pyritic sulfur removal. Our research efforts to date have indicated that the IBP-S can be a reliable instrument for determining pyrite size distribution in crushed coal. A program was also developed to convert pyrite size data to a weight basis for comparisons to the results from chemical analyses. The problems encountered in our research and their solutions will be presented in the discussion.

Over the past several years, the combination of higher energy and steel costs and the recent commercial deployment of high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) technology in hard rock mining have led many multinational mining companies to evaluate the suitability of HPGR technology for their particular comminution circuits. HPGR technology is perceived to require a higher capital investment while delivering lower long-term operating costs. This paper undertakes a critical evaluation of this perception. By evaluating the capital and life-of-mine operating costs of competing circuit designs for soft, medium and hard ores, the HPGR break-even point can be identified, at which the incremental capital cost of an HPGR circuit is equivalent to the net present value of the projected operating cost reductions. For ores with hardness parameters above the break-even point, HPGR circuits could offer economic benefits, while for softer ores, SAG mill/ball mill/pebble crushing (SABC) circuits are likely to be more economical and energy efficient. This evaluation considers both an SABC reference circuit and a traditional stage crushing configuration. Other influential factors are also discussed.
