A parametric study was conducted using FLAC3D numerical models to examine the impact of oblique loading on the strength and yield pattern of a stone pillar using two simplified geometry types. In type-1 the side walls of the pillars were assumed to be perpendicular to the roof and the floor, while in type-2 the side walls were assumed to be vertical. These two geometries are frequently used to simplify/model the creation of pillars in dipping mines. Results from the numerical modeling indicate that dipping pillars have reduced strength compared to horizontal pillars, and they are at an elevated risk of failure. Also, an asymmetric failure propagation pattern could be obtained depending on the interaction between the pillar width/height (W/H) ratio, seam dip, in situ stresses and pillar geometry.

Chemical and physical properties of thiol collectors are reexamined to compare the prospects of heavy metal-thiolate or disulphide surface reaction products acting as actual collector species. Recent evidences for the existence and importance of each of these types of adsorbed species on sulphide minerals are also discussed. A conclusion is reached that partial coverage by chemisorbed heavy metal thiolate is often sufficient to confer practical levels of hydrophobicity and floatability. Only on a few highly conducting and "noble" sulphides does adsorbed disulphide-type collector oxidation product appear to be significant.

There is no such thing as an industrial minerals industry. There are, however, many industries operating in the general field of industrial minerals. And although we use the phrase "industrial minerals industry" out of sheer convenience, the only common denominator among, say, the potash mining and processing industry, the sulphur-sulphuric acid industry and the granite industry is, in fact, that they each are exploiting an industrial mineral resource. May I quote the person whom I consider to be the reigning Mr. Industrial Minerals, Robert L. Bates, who in the 4th edition, 1975, of Industrial Minerals and Rocks states: "An industry is considered to belong to the industrial minerals field if its operations consist of extraction and processing, but not manufacturing. Thus the mining and beneficiation of feldspar is a mineral industry, but the manufacture of ceramic products is not. In the cement and lime industries, processing merges into manufacture, and the line is less distinct. It disappears altogether in a plant that extracts salt as artificial brines, and makes sodium and chlorine chemicals, all under the same roof."

During wet grinding the electrochemical interactions between grinding media and pyrrhotite not only accelerate the media wear but also adversely affect the flotation response of the sulfide mineral. A possibility of remedying the adverse effect on its floatability by applying electric potentials to grinding media was examined. Flotation tests, Auger electron spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to study the surface properties of pyrrhotite. Although anodic polarization of the steels increased the metal loss by corrosion, the flotation recovery of pyrrhotite was increased. In the case of cathodic polarization, the flotation recovery improved in a narrow range of overpotentials. At higher cathodic overpotentials, however, the floatability of the mineral was progressively lowered although the corrosive wear of grinding media might be reduced.

Shortly after Asarco Inc. purchased the Ray Mines Division from Kennecott in 1986, the company began an expansion program to increase copper production. The Bechtel Corp. oversaw engineering procurement and construction management for a new in-pit crusher, overland conveyor system and concentrator facility. Construction started in May 1990 on these facets of the expansion project. The concentrator was commissioned in February 1992. The Ray concentrator uses a single-line, semiautogenous grinding circuit (SAG) with a design through¬put of 27 kt/d (30,000 stpd). In the early 1960s, Kennecott conducted pilot plant grind tests of Ray mine ores to determine their amenability to SAG and autogenous grinding methods. Those tests, though, were not followed up. During 1973 and 1982, Kennecott conducted additional pilot testing on some of the softer ore types. In 1989, Asarco ran a final series of SAG pilot grinding tests at Lakefield Research, which became the basis of the new Ray concentrator grinding circuit. Even though pilot test work demonstrated that some of the Ray ores gave satisfactory results during the autogenous grinding tests, the SAG option was selected for the primary comminution device. Due to the wide range of mineralogies encountered in the Ray ore body, selective mining and blending of these ores would be required to achieve the necessary production efficiencies and throughput rates using an autogenous grinding circuit.

The minerals industry trend toward very flotation machines, exceeding 10 m3, began in the late 1960's and responds to the continuing desire to achieve better plant economics through improved plant floor-space utilization, power requirements, and operational /maintenance manpower heeds. In general, as process design tonnage increases, the benefits of the larger flotation machine becomes more evident. The development of the larger flotation machine can be distingushed from earlier, smaller, machines in demanding a rational "scale-up" procedure to guide the basic design, thereby producing a machine prototype capable of satisfactory-operational evaluation at minimum cost. Proven flotation machine "hydrodynamic" scale-up consideration, successfully applied in the development of both the WEMCO No. 164 (28.3 m3) and No. 190 (42.5 m3) machine will be reviewed, and the resulting economic benefits of large flotation machines in high tonnage applications will be summarized.

Assessments of the stability performance of open pit highwalls have traditionally been based on consideration of surface movement rates. Although generally accepted in industry, this approach presents challenges for establishing appropriate threshold values to allow for safe mining operations and does not address the issue of total strain. Surface movement monitoring data from a limited number of open pit mining operations in North and South America has been evaluated in terms of highwall strain, rock mass quality and inferred mechanism of instability. Threshold strain levels for key stages of highwall stability proposed from previous work have been reviewed and are generally endorsed based on evaluation of additional data. An empirical highwall strain criteria for the assessment of highwall stability performance is postulated based on the observed trends in highwall strain data from the case histories presented.

Knowledge of local coal mine roof geology is critical to the design of a safe and suitable mine structure. An automated drill control and data collection system has been designed for a J.H. Fletcher twin-head roof bolter. Drilling parameters collected during the drilling process can be used to interpret geologic features intercepted in the mine roof. The drill and data collection system have been tested in both laboratory and underground settings. Visualization of certain drilling data has shown good correlation with geology drilled. A quantitative prediction model was developed using drilling parameters examined with data visualization. The quantitative model was tested using laboratory drilling data.

Introduction Rod mills are horizontal, cylindrical, rotating, tumbling mills in which steel rods, that are usually about 6 in. shorter than the length of the grinding chamber, are used for grinding media. Fig. 33 shows a cutaway view of a rod mill. Rod mills were first used around 1910 because of their ability to grind in open circuit, consistently produce a uniformly sized prod¬uct, give greater continuous availability, and give lower maintenance costs. They have basically replaced roll crushers and coarse grinding ball mills in comminution flowsheets. The present 20-ft limit on rod length, based on rod manufacturing methods, and the pulp flow char¬acteristics, that influence mill capacity, have established the maximum rod mill sizes' of 15 x 21 Vs ft using 20-ft rods and drawing from 2,200 to 2,300 hp. Rod Mill Uses. The principal uses for rod mills are: preparing feed for ball or pebble mills, grinding gravel or aggregates to the size analysis required for making concrete sand, preparing coarse agitator feed for leaching operations, and for primary grinding circuits, particularly in industrial mineral applications. Wet grinding is the most frequently used grinding process for rod milling. There are a few special cases where dry rod milling is used. Preparing feed for ball or pebble mills is the most common use for rod mills. In ferrous and nonferrous ore concentrators, wet open-circuit grinding is used to prepare ball-mill feed. Figs. 34 thru 37 show the four basic grinding circuits used in these concentrators. In rod mill-ball mill grinding circuits, where the rod-mill discharge contains 25% or more of the grinding circuit product-size material, the rod-mill discharge can be fed to the ball- or pebble-mill classifier as shown in Fig. 34. This is the most frequently used rod mill-ball mill circuit in the nonferrous ore concentrators. In a few concentrators such as Anaconda's Weed concentrator,55 the rod mill discharges to one classification stage which makes the same or a slightly coarser particle-size cut as the classifiers used to close the ball- or pebble¬mill circuits, as shown in Fig. 35. In concentrators where rod mill-ball mill circuits are used to grind low grade magnetic iron ores such as Reserve Mining Co., Silver Bay, Minn.; Erie Mining Co., Hoyt Lakes, Minn.; Eveleth Taconite Co., Forbes, Minn.; US Steel, Mt. Iron, Minn. and Atlantic City, Wyo.; Inland Steel-Jackson County Iron Co., Black River Falls, Wis.; and The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., Adams mine, Kirkland Lake, Ont., the rod mills discharge to rougher magnetic separators (cobbers), the concentrates from which are fed to a ball milling stage as shown in Fig. 36. The same basic circuit is also used with gravity concentra¬tion methods such as spirals (Hanna Mining Co., Groveland, Mich.), tables (St. Joe Minerals, Bonne Terre, Mo.), and jigs. When the rod-mill discharge contains less than 25% of the grind¬ing circuit product size, this indicates an ore that does not readily produce the fines needed to help carry the coarse feed into the ball charge. When this occurs, the fines in the rod-mill discharge are needed in the ball mill or pebble mill so the rod-mill discharge flows direct to the second-stage mills as shown in Fig. 37. Rod mills are used to make feed for open-circuit ball mills such as those used in wet grinding cement raw material (American Cement, Brennan Ave¬nue plant, Detroit, Mich., and Port Huron, Mich., plant, and at the South Dakota State Cement plant, Rapid City, S. Dak.). Grinding gravel or aggregates to the size analysis required for making concrete sand is used in areas where natural sand of the proper particle size gradation required to make concrete is not availa¬ble. Three-quarter inch crushed aggregate is ground to 4 mesh using center peripheral-discharge rod mills (Fig. 38) operating in open circuit. US Corps of Engineers specifications state that the sand product be 93-100% passing 4 mesh and contain no more than 3-7% passing 200 mesh. It may be necessary to classify the rod-mill discharge to remove any excess -200 mesh sand produced in the rod mill. Particu¬larly when processing aggregate with high abrasion indices, center peripheral-discharge rod mills are used instead of hammer mills, fine bowl crushers, and crushing rolls for the production of specification sand. The Doan Valley Storage Tunnel Project in Cleveland Ohio was constructed to control Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs). It is a complex system of three tunnels ranging from 8.5 to 18 feet in diameter with a total length of about 2.3 miles that was put into operation in mid-2021. The project lies within and below the cultural, educational, and medical hub of Cleveland, which presented unique design and construction challenges. This paper provides a case history of the design and construction, with particular attention given to lessons learned in devising a large tunnel system that can carry both dry and wet weather flows constructed in rock with limited cover, within a flood plain area and vibrant urban center

Prior to April, 1961, the coal charge to Clairtonts coke oven batteries was 3" x 0" mine waslied coal having approximately 6.0% to 7.0% moisture. Even at this size and moisture content, the arching, rat-holing and hang-up was excessive and the effective live storage of coal was only 60% to 70% of the rated capacity of the coal bunkers, depending upon the moisture of the coal. In addition, many production delays were encountered in the time and methods required to fill the larry cars. The need for an improved metallurgical coke led to the introduction of pulverized coal to a portion of the plant in 196 1. When the full potential of the pulverizing equipment was realized, we were able to serve seven batteries in our second unit of batteries with pulverized coal through two coal bunkers. The discharge hoppers of these bunkers were equipped with air vibrators to assist the flow of pulverized coal into the larry cars. The vibrators were helpful in this respect but required considerable maintenance and caused damage to the bin plates.

The application of an open-pit Materials Handling Simulator (OPMHS) to analyze mine planning and scheduling problems in large surface mines is discussed. The mine chosen for this application employed a large stripping dragline working in tandem with a shovel-truck haulback system for removing overburden. Large bottom-dump trucks were employed behind a coal loading shovel to transport the exposed coal out of the pit. Specifically, the current operations and the recommendations for short term and long term improvements were simulated on OPMHS. The effects of changing the operating parameters of the equipment on the total system were evaluated. Several alternatives were also studied for the best use of the existing equipment if the current operating parameters could not be improved upon. The results of the application are discussed.

The cobalt plant was successfully commissioned in mid-1983. It is located within the company's nickel - copper re finery situated in Springs, South Africa. Plant design, which began in 1981, made provision for the corrosive process environment, stringent environmental standards, and the latest noise abatement requirements. In addition, the process flowsheet for the primary recovery of the cobalt byproduct and the purging of six impurity metals (nickel, iron, copper, manganese, lead, and arsenic) was designed with simplicity as a primary objective. High purity cobalt powder has been produced since commissioning.

One of the challenges of mining is the concentration of heavy metals it releases into the environment through a phenomenon called Acid Mine Drainage. Freiberg is no exception due to its long mining activities. The European Union proposes that all rivers and streams must be in a good ecological status by the year 2027 but this would be difficult for large water sources as it would be economically unviable. Consequently, the approach of treating these waters at point sources would be of immense help and hence this column experiment on mine water treatment with carbon sorbents to remove zinc form the Rothschönberger Stolln. For this experiment three resins namely, APTsorb, activated coke, charred fermentation residues (which was produced by the Freiberg University of Mining and Technology) were analyzed through a simple column experiment to determine their sorption capacities. Through their sorption capacity as this experiment seeks to ascertain: we are able to make suggestions scientifically on the best material among the three for the future design of a treatment plant for the RSS. After the experiment whereby a 10 ml peri glass column was used, material A: APTsorb showed the least adsorption capacity (0.01 meq/g) and this could be attributed to the fact that the resin works well under pre-determined parameters such as pH and surface area. Material B: Activated coke showed a better sorption capacity (0.53 meq/g) in comparison to the basis value used for this experiment. Material C: charred fermentation residue which was produced by the University showed the most efficient capacity of (1.69 meq/g). This in comparison with the value used as the basis for this experiment showed that material C (charred fermentation residue) is very efficient for zinc sorption. pH values measured at the effluent of all the experiment were slightly higher than the pH measured in the initiating water.

During 1982 Ash Grove Cement Company contracted with Wagester, Walker, Thornton & Company to convert a Calcimatic rotating hearth kiln at its Portland, Oregon lime plant from gas/oil to coal firing. Increasing costs of natural gas and No. 6 fuel oil made this conversion mandatory if the plant was to remain competitive. Unique features of this project are 1) the distributors of pulverized coal to eighteen small burners around the inner and outer perimeters of the doughnut-shaped kiln, and 2) the attrition-dryer-pulverizer mill. Ash Grove, a century-old lime and cement producer headquartered in Overland Park, Kansas (Kansas City area), looked at various schemes for multiple burner firing before employing Wagester, Walker, Thornton & Company. W.W.T. of Pitts- burgh, Pennsylvania was formed in 1980 by acquiring the Solid Fuels Division of the Pullman Swindell Corporation. This division had been active in developing solid fuel firing for brick tunnel kilns, principally in the Southeast. They continue to supply such systems firing wood waste as well as coal to the brick industry and have also converted two Calcimatic lime kilns for Dixie Lime, Sumterville, Florida, a fluid bed calciner for Texas Gulf in Aurora, North Carolina, and a chrome concentrate kiln for Diamond Chemicals at Castle Hayne, North Carolina. Testing and a proposal have been made for INMETCO, Elwood City, Pennsylvania, on an annular hearth furnace for direct reduction of iron ore to metallic iron.

Demands on available lands will continue to increase due to the projected increase in population and industrial expansion. Though there is an upper limit on the available lands, the multi-use nature of the lands will make it possible to meet these demands. However, this will not happen without adequate planning. Land uses can be broadly categorized as non-renewable and renewable. Lands with mineable resources can be dedicated at some point in time to the extraction of resources. Such a dedication, however long-term, is only temporary because of the non-renewable nature of the mineable resources. Implied here is that the land will be available before and after mining for other uses. Planning for such lands must have the objective that, as far as practicable, no non-renewable uses are pre-empted and no renewable uses are permanently destroyed. The primary aspects of this planning process will be addressed in this paper, These aspects include a discussion of planning responsibility, data needs and availability, the integration of mine planning and post-mining land use planning and a long-term plan for resource conservation and utilization. Minerals, together with agriculture and forestry products, are the primary sources of wealth. Therefore, to avoid land development that may pre-empt future mineral resource utilization, the local planning groups must be aware of the mineralization and mining potential. Much work needs to be done to identify and characterize the mineral resources. Even more work is needed in land use planning for lands with mineral deposits.

Introduction The Utah Copper Division of Kennecott Copper Corporation will present its contribution to the A. M. Gaudin Flotation Symposium in four parts. The first two segments will discuss briefly the historical development of the Utah Copper Division and describe the ore body. The third segment will review the facilities and operating procedures for the Utah Copper Division's newest plant, the Bonneville Concentrator. The fourth segment describes flotation process circuitry, including molybdenite recovery procedures, at the Arthur and Magna concentrators. (The Bonneville concentrator is a crushing and grinding unit and does not have its own flotation plant). 1. Historical Development Progress through change has been the key to the successful operation of the Utah Copper Division for more than 70 years. As the original low-grade copper operation, the pressures to remain competitive and profitable have dictated the timing and extent of each change. Much of the change has occurred through technological and economic advancements in the area of ore concentration. The Utah Copper Division of Kennecott Copper Corporation had its origin June 4, 1903, when the Utah Copper Company was organized. The initial mill of 300 tpd (tons per day) capacity was built at Copperton a few miles below the present Bingham Canyon mine site. From 1904 to 1910, the Copperton mill was expanded to a capacity of 1,000 tpd, and all of the known apparatus for gravity concentration were evaluated.

The Ortiz Mine is operated by Gold Fields Mining Corporation, a subsidiary of Consolidated Gold Fields Ltd., one of the world's major gold producers. The Ortiz Mine is Gold Fields only heap leaching facility as well as being their first operating mine in the U.S.A. The hydrometallurgical processes utilized for recovery of gold and silver at Ortiz are discussed along with the several practical changes in operation adopted since start-up. Included are heap leaching by cyanidation, concentration of values on activated carbon, desorption, and the final electrowinning steps prior to shipment. Construction costs and pertinent technical data are shown.

Because of the competitive nature of the iron ore pelletizing industry, commodities required for the production of pellets are continually being scrutinized to minimize their usage and offset rapidly escalating costs. In the Tilden pellet plant, the usage of one commodity, bentonite, has been reduced from over twenty-four pounds per long ton of pellets to as low as eight pounds per long ton. The evolution of bentonite usage from plant start-up to the present time is described.
