Overlying the sulfide mineralization at Anamax Mining Company's Twin Buttes Mine is an oxidized zone up to one hundred meters in thickness. The principal copper minerals in this zone are chryso-colla, tenorite, cuprite, native copper and copper-manganese-iron wad. This ox¬idized zone also contains minor amounts of uranium ranging in concentration from 0.002 to 0.010 percent. Since pit development through 1980, some 38 million tonnes of oxide ore with copper contents greater than 0.6 percent have been brought to the surface. Copper in the oxide ore is extracted at Twin Buttes in, an agitated sulfuric acid leach plant followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning producing 90 tonnes per day of copper cathode. During leaching of the oxide ores small amounts of uranium are solubilized along with the copper values. This is not limited to Twin Buttes as most acidic copper bearing leach solutions throughout the southwestern United States contain small amounts of uranium.1

A decanter centrifuge of novel design was developed for the dewatering of fine-solids slurries having micrometer-range particles that form pastelike, flowable, hard-to-dewater cakes. The design combines a compound beach with a cake flow control structure that allows expressed liquid, from the cake in the dry beach region to be returned to the liquid pool while maintaining a high-solids throughput. To provide optimal performance with various operating parameters (i.e., feed rate, centrifugal gravity, pool, differential speed, concentration of feed solids and slurry type), the cake flow control is adjustable. The second part of the beach is preferably at a zero angle. Tests showed that the new design allows increases in solids dryness and solids throughput. Flotation is the primary method for copper minerals separation from porphyry ores. The need to process difficult-to-float porphyry copper ores presents challenges to engineers and scientists in several areas. This paper is concerned with summarizing generalized problems faced in the processing of porphyry ores and treatment methods to overcome the specific problems. Though some of the problems are interrelated the problems have been classified into three broad catagories. The case studies of some of the successful applications of innovative methods to solve problems related to ore mineralogy, metallurgical aspects of ore treatment and process variables show that quite often the problems are solvable by a judicious choice of flotation variables.

At the request of the Mine Safety and Health Administration, a quantitative assessment of the risk of lung cancer associated with occupational exposures to diesel exhaust was performed. This assessment was primarily based upon the results from a study of the effects of chronic inhalation exposure to diesel exhaust in Fischer-344 rats (previously reported by Mauderly et al., 1987). An adaptation of the Armitage-Doll multistage model, which allows for an age-dependent effect of exposure, was used to model the tumor response data. This model was fitted to all tumors (benign and malignant), and to malignant neoplasms alone. Estimates of unit risk (potency) were derived based upon a linear approximation to the results from the multistage model. A biologically equivalent dose was developed to scale the results from airborne exposure in rats to humans, which was adjusted for differences in weight, ventilation rate, deposition fraction, and the percentage of time actually exposed. Comparisons are made with risk estimates derived from modeling other rat inhalation bioassays and from applying different models to the study by Mauderly et al. (1987). We emphasize that our risk estimates are based upon a series of assumptions and carry a great deal of uncertainty. In particular, uncertainties regarding the effects of exposure on lung clearance mechanisms, the deposition rates in humans, and the relevance of our exposure index limit our confidence in these risk estimates. Most of the production of copper in the United States comes from a few large companies. Often overlooked, however, are the more numerous small mining operations, which collectively produce a significant portion of the nation's copper. The objective of this paper is to describe the operations of a small mining company - Ranchers Exploration and Development Corporation - how it views its place in this industry of giants, how it exploits the advantages offered by its relatively small size, and how it protects itself from the hazards being small introduces. Environment is, of course, a critical factor for such a company because it does not have the resources which help large companies weather periods of financial stress. Ideally, this environment is characterized by a heal thy economy, strong product demand, relatively stable prices , adequate grades and tonnages of ore commensurate with depth and over-burden, ready access to utilities, a dependable labor pool, and suitable technical "know how". When the environment is right, properties which were previously uneconomical to operate attract the attention of companies whose primary interest is a return on investment commensurate with risk over a reasonable period of time. Naturally, the amount of the investment and the duration of operation determines the size of the company which would be interested in such a venture. Such is the case with Ranchers Bluebird Mine at Miami, Arizona - a small property operated by a small company in a favorable economic environment.

High purity MgO is widely used in various fields as an important magnesiumcompound. The separation of Mg and Ca is of great importance for the preparation of high purity MgO from dolomite. In this study, the key effects of carbonization temperature and nano-calcium carbonate agglomeration on the separation mechanism of calcium and magnesium have been investigated. The results indicated that the reaction in the carbonization process was stepwise. Precise control of the carbonization temperature was essential for the formation of Mg(HCO3)2 due to its low reaction efficiency at lower temperatures or decomposition markedly at higher temperatures. Meanwhile, there was a common-ion effect in solutions containing Mg2+ and Ca2+. Nano-CaCO3 particles were formed during carbonization and agglomerated with the prolongation of static time. A product with a purity of 99.56% MgO and 0.16% CaO was obtained under the optimized conditions: ratio of liquid–solid 30 L/g, carbonization temperature 22–25 °C, carbonization time 1 h, and refining time 4 h. This work has important guiding significance for the preparation of high purity magnesium oxide from dolomite.

The mine development decision is made on completion of exploration to determine whether or not a mineral deposit should be developed to production and, if so, how. This involves the selection of an optimum mine development alternative from a number of technically feasible alternatives and the comparison of this optimum with those of other available investment opportunities. If the optimum is sufficiently attractive, the deposit is developed to production. The selection process is carried out within a framework of corporate objectives and resources. The mine development decision is based on the balancing of two parameters - - rate of production as reflected in plant capacity and cut-off grade. On the basis of available information and experience, detailed revenue and cost 'estimates are made for each feasible combination of plant capacity and cut-off grade. What economic evaluation techniques should be applied to these estimates to reduce each alternative to economic indicators that will enable meaningful comparisons and an informed investment decision? This is the essence of the paper. The determination of optimum plant capacity and cut-off grade has been the subject of intensive research efforts by economists and mining engineers (1-7). Their studies are based on marginal analysis and assume that, at the time of decision, certainty conditions prevail with respect to ore reserves, mining costs and mineral markets. The optimum mine development alternative is defined as that which maximizes profitability.

Federal regulations require that refuge alternatives (RAs) be located within 305 m (1,000 ft) of the working face and spaced at one-hour travel distances in the outby area in underground coal mines, in the event that miners cannot escape during a disaster. The Mine Safety and Health Administration mandates that RAs provide safe shelter and livable conditions for a minimum of 96 hours while maintaining the apparent temperature below 35 °C (95 °F). The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health used a validated thermal simulation model to examine the mechanisms of heat loss from an RA to the ambient mine and the effect of mine strata composition on the final internal dry bulb temperature (DBT) for a mobile tent-type RA. The results of these studies show that 51 percent of the heat loss from the RA to the ambient mine is due to radiation and 31 percent to conduction. Three mine width and height configurations and four mine strata compositions were examined. The final DBT inside the RA after 96 hours varied by less than 1 °C (1.8 °F) for the three mine width/height configurations and by less than 2 °C (3.6 °F) for the four mine strata compositions.

A comparison of the mine site before and after mining is made to demonstrate the ""best practice"" in modern mining.Sustainability in Mineral Resource Development Extraction of mineral resources and other natural resources on the Earth has been and will continue to be an essential activity necessary to support human’s life. We live on the planet and depend on the available resources to survive. The extracted materials form the base to support modern life. However, we must be aware of the fact that mineral resources are limited on the Earth and may not last forever. Every time we extract one ton of materials, there is one ton less. They are not able to regenerate or regrow. One can ask a simple question: How long will they last? Or, is there anything left for our great grandchildren and many generations to come? The answer is not simple. Some minerals have become scarce or about to deplete. Some minerals may last longer. The reserve of a type of minerals depends on what we have discovered and the minable amount depends on accessibility and technology we have. Even if there are minerals in the deep ground, we may be limited by our technological capability. At the same time, we also need to understand the action of mineral extraction from the ground and the consequences of that action. Mineral extraction is a very hard work. We must break the ground to extract the ore, either through surface mining or underground mining. This action means disturbance of the land where we live. The disturbance is much more visible in surface mining than underground mining. The disturbed land, if not properly reclaimed after mining, is not going to be reusable. The very purpose of extracting minerals from the ground is to support our life but the action has a negative impact on our life. How can we reduce and limit disturbance of land from the action of minerals extraction? How can we make the disturbed land reusable? These issues must be properly addressed and a balance achieved."

The paper gives a short resumé of the findings of the joint US - Swedish "Mechanical Boring (MB) or Drill and Blast Tunneling (DB) ? Workshop" in Stockholm December 1976. New developments and trends in both MB and DB techniques in Europe since 1976 are described, and information is given on some interesting new projects. Differences in contracting principles between the US and Europe lead to different practices for preinvestigations, design, excavation and arbitration and legal affairs. It is shown that this often leads to a higher cost in the US than in Europe for similar excavation jobs. A typical US tunnel job also has more men on the site than a similar job in Europe. This adds to the cost difference and is only partly balanced by a slightly higher rate of excavation in the US. A comparison is made between two quantitative methods of predicting MB penetration rates. These are in reasonable agreement. A probable future development in machine design is an increase in cutter load towards perhaps 25 tons per disc where the tunnel diameter is large enough to house the machine size dictated by the size of the very large electric motors required. Recent European developments in drill and blast technique include improved methods for cautious blasting, precision hydraulic drilling of small diameter holes, and non-electric interval blasting techniques. These developments still keep the drill and blast method ahead of mechanical boring costwise for tunnels in igneous rock whereas for most sedimentary materials mechanical boring has a lead, particularly for long tunnels.

The Lime Creek* ore body in northwestern British Columbia is one of the few commercial primary stockwork-type molybdenite deposits in North America. Others include the Climax, Urad-Henderson, Questa, and Endako ore bodies. They are mined on a low grade-high tonnage basis, and are open pit operations except for Climax and Urad-Henderson. Much recent geochemical research on both porphyry copper and stockwork MoS2 deposits has been concerned with dating of micas related to the mineralization and associated igneous rocks. The results appear to show that mineralization and the predominant magmatic events of the deposit are indistinguishable in age (1-5), except where dating has been in sufficient detail to resolve the analytical overlap (6). At Lime Creek, geologic information shows that the Main granodiorite, the major intrusive and dominant host rock for MoS2 mineralization, was emplaced and had solidified sometime prior to the introduction of MoS2. The first MoS2 episode is intimately related to localized bodies of kalialaskite which clearly intrude the older stock. K-Ar dating was undertaken to clarify the age relations between Lime Creek plutonism and the apparently younger hydrothermal event that began with kalialaskite.

In this article, the cementation of major impurities from zinc sulphate leach solution by the addition of zinc dust was studied by considering different parameters including time, mesh size, and percentage of excess zinc dust. The output obtained from various experiments was utilized for the design of experiments. A multi-level categorical factorial design with a quadratic model was employed during this study. Results were predicted to minimize the concentration of impurity metals in the solution by altering the parameters. Furthermore, these predicted results were validated by performing another experiment. Successfully, it showed that the predicted and experimental data values were close to each other. The predicted optimized values were 40 min, 100% excess zinc dust, and 300 mesh size for copper; 42 min, 100% excess zinc dust, and 300 mesh size for cobalt; 37 min, 100% excess zinc dust, and 300 mesh size for cadmium; and 34 min, 100% excess zinc dust, and 300 mesh size zinc dust for nickel. At these optimized values, the experimental results showed 99.99%, 55.7%, 99.6%, and 76.6% cementation efficiencies for copper, cobalt, cadmium, and nickel respectively. The statistical design of experiments for the effective cementation of impurities corroborates the economic feasibility of optimizing parameters for the proposed process.

During the past ten years, the US coal industry has experimented with various ways to extract methane from coal seams. Drilling long horizontal boreholes in solid coal from mine workings and vertical gob degas boreholes are becoming standard techniques for methane recovery from coal seams. Prime motivations for such work have always been safety and productivity in mines, but the commercial value of gas so produced is encouraging utilization. The paper reviews various ways to produce methane from coal seams and discusses some utilization projects extant in the industry.

Concentrating plants, in common with other types of industrial plants, cannot operate without lectric power. The elctric distribution system and utilization equipment; therefore, must be carefully considered in all phases of plant design. Two important aspects of proper distribution and usage of electric power are the selection of voltage levels and the methods of system grounding. These are not necessarily the most important design considerations, but are perhaps more controversial than other major points, Modern plants demand increasing amounts of power which, since electric power is the product of voltage and current means higher voltages or currents. Higher voltages require more insulation, higher currents more conductor. The equipment designer?s problem is to obtain in his transformer, cable, switchgear, controller, motor, etc a balance of insulation and conductor to obtain a satisfactory design at lowest cost. To provide the most economical system, both in initial and operating costs requires the system designer to select the proper voltage level. Adequate voltage also permits expansion to meet future requirements, and results in better operation of utilization equipment, Relatively little advancement has been made in recent years in improving conductors; however, great progress has been made in improving insulation. Thus modern plants, in general, now find it more economical to use higher voltages than they did previously. For example plants which only a few years ago would have used 2400 volts as a system voltage often find nowdays that 4160 volts is their proper choice. If the plant requires 10,000 kva br more, then an even higher voltage, such as 13,800 volts, will prove economical. However, for the average concentration plant, with less than 10,000 kva demand, the choice of distribution voltages is between 2400 and 4160 volts, and 480 volts will be used for the low voltage utilization system.

The European Commission published its Communication of the Thematic Strategy on the sustainable use of natural resources ("Resource Strategy") on 21 December 2005. The Resource Strategy aims at reducing environmental impacts associated with resource use - called decoupling - in a growing European economy and worldwide. The impacts of unsustainable resource use include e.g. climate change due to fossil fuel use, land use and environmental degradation due to mineral extraction and processing, or overexploitation of soil and fish stocks. To decouple environmental impacts from economic growth, a life-cycle approach is adopted. It means that the environmental impacts are taking into account at each stage of the life cycle of a resource, avoiding that negative impacts are shifted to other environmental media, to other stages of the life cycle, or to other countries. Key to achieving decoupling are three factors: - More value - creating more value while using fewer resources (?resource productivity?); - Less impact - reducing overall environmental impact per unit of resources used (through ?cleaner? technologies and consumption pat-terns); - Better alternatives - substituting currently used resources with better alternatives. The paper focuses on the implementation actions of the Resource Strategy in particular related to the minerals industry: 1. The Data Centre on natural resources; 2. Indicators to measure progress; 3. The involvement of economic sectors to take concrete actions; 4. EU Member States involvement, focusing on resource uses with the most significant impacts; 5. The International Panel on the sustainable use of natural resources, set up together with UNEP. With its 25 years time horizon and its wide approach the Resource Strategy will have a co-ordinating function to ensure enhanced coherence and efficiency. The challenge will be to integrate this approach into all policies and decision-making.

Today, the two major operating costs of rubber tired off-road equipment are diesel fuel and tires. Mine Management has minimal control over the ever accelerating diesel fuel costs. However, they can exercise control over abnormal tire costs. Fortunately, with available technology and cost analysis methods, experience shows us the outlook for controlling tire costs is encouraging. Most earthmoving operations using off-road, rubber tired haulage and support equipment have abnormally high total tire costs. These costs, utilizing Tire Information Management, have been reduced more than 30%; 20% can often be guaranteed. Management Apathy on the subject of tires in a complex mining operation perhaps can be understood, but management apathy applied to an abnormally high operating cost, of which tires are, begs for a solution.' Tires have been professionally neglected for many years in most mine operations. This is exemplified in the January, 1982 issue of Mining Engineering by Charlie Son in his article Reducing Earthmoving Tire Costs. He compared the efforts to improve diesel engine costs to the same efforts given to earthmover tires.

With new mineral deposits found in areas of difficult terrain, and annual production capacity increasing in mines over the last decade, the aerial ropeway is proving to be a viable, economic method of transportation from mine to processing plant. Of the more conventional designs, a bicable ropeway is more suited to difficult country than the simpler monocable. The bicable, however, does have limitations in the difference in levels it can accommodate in one section at a given capacity. This is noticeable where hilly terrain and high capacity imposes a limit on the length of each section. Increasing the number of sections for a relatively short conveying distance tends, in the case of conventional bicable, to unbalance the normally favorable economics of the ropeway. In addition to analyzing hauling rope stresses, other areas have to be considered when looking at high capacity ropeways. Bucket capacity, speed, and the wheel load on track ropes are examples. These and other factors led British Ropeway Engineering Co., of Sevenoaks, Kent, UK, to produce the twin-track system. Using twin track ropes, larger capacity buckets, and, if the height differential warrants, the installation of twin hauling ropes, BRECO produced a ropeway design for areas of hilly terrain and at higher capacities than had been considered suitable for aerial ropeways. Designs have been produced for systems handling 1.5 kt/h (1,650 stph), and the potential exists for expansion to above 2 kt/h (2,200 stph). The arrangement of ropes provides high stability of the cars and is especially suited to areas where high winds occur during normal operation. This development allows the aerial ropeway to be applied economically in difficult areas and at the increasingly high capacities demanded by engineers. Ropeway Transports Limestone to Sudan Cement Plant Maspio Cement Corp. of Atbara, Sudan, will soon use an aerial ropeway to deliver its entire limestone requirement 20 km (12 miles) from quarry to plant. The Atbara plant is located north of Khartoum, near the east bank of the Nile River. The quarry is west of the river, in hills rising from flat desert country. The original transport system was a 24-km (15-mile) railway from the quarry to the west bank and a monocable ropeway that crossed the Nile and continued to the fac¬tory, a distance of about 2.5 km (1.5 miles). The geology and early history of the discovery of potash in Saskatchewan as described by Heber Cole (1) and R. V. Thompkins (2) has dealt with the distribution of the salt beds and their potash content. From the many bore holes through the Prairie Evaporites the outlines and contours of the series have been well established. The thickest section of the salt beds lies to the north of the "barren" area and forms a belt running easterly to a point west of Yorkton. The "barren" area is a region where the salt has been redissolved and the strata have slumped down, to fill the voids. This area is of interest from the standpoint of rock mechanics. The potash-rich beds extend both east and west of the region. mentioned and the top of the Prairie Evaporite is at a depth below 3200 feet from the surface near Saskatoon and dips southerly at an average rate of about five feet to ten feet per mile.

It is well known that the major fractures and lineaments presently recorded in Western North America are preferentially oriented along a general northwest direction (Figure 1). There are other features, however, more subtle, more elusive as a rule and which can only be inferred, occurring at right angle to this broad NW direction. It is intended a) to examine some of these NE or transverse trends, b) to compare these regional NE breaks to similar ones that transversally cut through the eastern part of the European Tethys, more specifically in Iran and Turkey, and c) to study their potential relationship to mineralization in both areas.
