INTRODUCTION The term "dewatering" refers to removal of water from coal. Water associated with coal can be categorized as "free or surface" and "inherent or chemically bound" moisture.' The free moisture is found on the surface of coal, in capillaries and small spaces between two or more particles. The inherent or chemically bound water is found in the interior of the coal and as part of coal structure. A significant amount of free moisture can be removed by mechanical dewatering techniques. However, inherent moisture can only be removed by applying energy intensive techniques, e.g., direct or indirect heating. Moisture in the coal offsets some of the benefits of coal cleaning. Extra water in clean coal adds to extra cost in transportation, heat lost during vaporization, and plugging of chutes. From a utility perspective, a 1 % increase in moisture can offset a 4.5% decrease in ash.2 Mechanical dewatering can be classified into two major process categories according to the principles involved, namely, 1. Sedimentation-liquid is constrained and particles move freely. 2. Filtration-particles are constrained by a medium and the liquid flows through. Each of the process categories is composed of various separation techniques shown in Fig. Equipment currently being used by the mechanical dewatering of coal of varying size ranges and final moisture content is illustrated in Fig. 8-2. This figure indicates that sizes larger than 13/, in. (37.5 mm) present no particular dewatering problem. Shaker screens of the very crudest types and designs are capable of producing these sizes at low surface moistures. High-speed vibrators are used for the intermediate sizes and can be used for smaller sizes down to 0.02 in. (0.5 mm) if high moistures (15% surface moisture or greater) can be tolerated in the product. Usually, however, the vibrator is not used below 3/, to 3/, in. (9.5 to 6.3 mm) because of the moisture associated with these fine sizes. At this level, centrifugal force is usually employed to aid dewatering. A system of models which simulate surface coal mining operations has been developed for use in mine planning and economic evaluations. Micromodels simulate individual mine operations for equipment selection and mine planning. Macromodels simulate all operations in the complete mine for economic evaluation of reserves. A cash flow analysis model makes a complete discounted cash flow analysis to deter-mine a required coal sales price or return on investment for evaluation of any mining project.

As surface minable coal is depleted, many operators look to high-wall mining to extend reserve life. Recent advances in highwall mining equipment have greatly improved productivity, clean coal recovery, and attainable penetration beneath the highwall. Somewhat lagging have been systematic design approaches for ensuring web pillar and overall highwall stability. This paper presents an overview of the design, planning, and field performance of a multiple-seam highwall mining application in southwest Wyoming. The safety and efficiency obtained to date is attributable to the careful geotechnical and operational planning described herein. Field confirmation of performance and suggestions for improvement are also discussed.

Over 100 saprolite samples from Turkey Hill Gold Mine, Lumpkin County, Georgia, were analyzed (-80 mesh) for As, Au, and Sb. Maximum values are 16.2 ppm As, 7.9 ppm Au, and 29.1 ppm Sb. Results show trace element content of saprolite varies with topography: ridge top samples show a pronounced decrease in Au and Sb, and to a lesser degree in As, whereas, slope and valley samples have anomalous Au and Sb concentrations, with no discernable pattern for As. Statistical analysis shows strong correlation between Au and Sb and none between Au and As. This study will serve as a model for gold exploration in deeply weathered terrains with variable relief.

Aqueous solutions of Na2Cr04 can be reduced with CO to produce hydrous Cr203 and NaHCO3/Na2CO3. CH3OH, HCOO and HCHO in the presence of CO2 also reduce Cr 6+ and yield similar products. It is shown that the rate of Cr6+ reduction can be represented by the expression -d[Cr6+]/dt=k[Cr6+)1/2[R] where [R] is the aqueous phase concentration of CH3OH, HCOO- or CO. With these three reductants, the activation energies for the reduction processes are comparable and are of the order of 100 kJ/mole. Rapid reduction rates are attained at temperatures in excess of 220°C and, with these three reductants, a green acid-insoluble readily filterable hydrous Cr203 is formed. With HCHO significant reduction of Cr6+ occurs at about 80-100°C and an acid-soluble violet modification of hydrous Cr2O3 is formed. The reduction process is reasonably selective: solutions of Na2CrO4 contaminated with Mo6+ and W6+ can be reduced to yield a Cr2O3 product with significantly reduced contaminant levels. These findings are utilized as a basis for a process for recovering chromium from secondary source materials.

Several issues deserve further attention to improve subsidence prediction accuracy. These include: subsidence initiation and development over a setup entry area; subsidence development after face stop; and subsidence over chain pillar. An intensive subsidence monitoring program has been carried out over several longwall panels. A large amount of subsidence data has been collected, analyzed and solution techniques developed. In this paper, some of the measured data. data analysis techniques and the developed prediction methods are presented.

Zinc ferrite is considered an integral phase of zinc residues as their presence can render the processing of zinc and critical metals difficult. It is a refractory phase, formed at high temperature in the presence of zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe) during oxidative roasting in zinc processing plants. Because it is refractory to efficient leaching, unreacted zinc ferrite gets concentrated in the final zinc residue, making it a viable source of zinc and indium extraction. The refractory nature of zinc ferrite makes the extraction of associated critical metals difficult. In order to explore a potential economic and carbon-neutral zinc ferrite processing technique, our previous study proposed the partial reduction of zinc ferrite followed by sulfuric acid leaching of the roasting product [1-3]. As demonstrated in our previous studies, partial reduction of zinc ferrite results in a mixture of ZnO, Fe3O4 and FeO, which can be further subjected to leaching for efficient extraction of zinc and critical metals such as gallium and indium.

Geological, hydrological, and geochemical information synthesized in a Geographical Information System (GIS) for water and rock surrounding South and Middle Forks of Mineral Creek, northwest of Silverton Colorado, was analyzed to distinguish between the natural and the mining-related sources of metals to dace waters in the watershed An important natural source of metals to surface water emanates from a porphyry molybdenum deposit south and upslope from the Middle Fork of Mineral Creek. Interaction of surface and ground water with fractured, altered rocks and permeable, Quatemay-age surficial deposits produces downstream water quality that does not meet current State of Colorado water quality standards for metals and pH. GIS site characterization and three-dimensional modeling distinguish surficial deposits as volumetrically substantial, significant sources of naturally occurring metals that strongly influence water quality and complicate ongoing mine-site mitigation efforts. Our findings indicate that regional hydrologic and geologic information needs to be evaluated before realistic water quality guidelines are established and mitigation recommendations are confidently implemented.

Mill scale is an oxide waste product of the steel mills, which contains around 70% iron and other allied impurities. In the present context, a dynamic prototype counter current reactor (CCR) has been used for experimentation and simulation of particle bed by using discrete element method (DEM). Mill scale was pulverized to ASTM mesh range 140 (106 μm)/ + 270 (53 μm), and then it was oxidized in CCR to make single oxide Fe2O3 phase by maintaining required thermodynamic conditions such as pure oxygen at 1100 °C. Then this oxidized powder was subjected to reduction reaction in CCR having gas mixture ( H2:N2) ratio of 1:4 at 875 ± 5 °C for filling degree (fd) and reactor revolution (ω) ranging from 5.38 to 16.14% and 2 to 5 rpm, respectively. A creeping fluid flow condition (Re ˂ 1) and natural heat convection (Gr/Re2 ˃˃ 1) has been maintained while undergoing solid–gas reaction. Besides particle bed behavior has been quantified by Froude number (Fr) for the optimum operating window. The simulation was validated by the experimental results of reactor reaction product by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. Prevailing heat transfer mechanism and reduction reaction mechanism has been established for solid–gas counter current conditions.

A stochastic discrete fracture network (DFN) model is developed based on mine site core log data to predict the horizontal and vertical permeabilities from the surface to the top of the caved zone at a longwall mining site in southwestern Pennsylvania. One hundred DFN realizations were generated to determine permeabilities for the isolated zone over an abutment pillar after mining the second panel. The results from this study show that the vertical and horizontal permeabilities from the DFN model agree closely with field measurements, which indicates that the resultant permeability obtained from the field measurements is representative of the predicted permeabilities. With this agreement, the aperture data for other zones of the mine could be obtained from the geomechanical model — specifically, for the fractured zone over the gob. Based on the successful validation of this model, this model could be further developed to predict the permeability of the fractured zone over the gob with fracture aperture obtained from the geomechanical analysis. This will complete the fracture characterization of the overburden, which could be used to predict potential shale gas flow to the mine in the event of a breach. This prediction could provide information on the associated risk of a casing breach and determination of methods to proactively prevent such an occurrence.

INTRODUCTION The Tokyo metropolitan region, inclusive of the three neighboring prefectures (Kanagawa, Chiba and Saitama), has the highest concentration of population and industry in Japan; with an area of 13,500 km2 or only 3.6 percent of the national land, but a population of 31.8 million or 26 percent of the national total, and a Gross Regional Product (GRP) of146 trillion yen (US$1.33 trillion) or 36 percent of the overall GDP of Japan as of 1990. Tokyo Bay, embraced by the metropolitan region as shown in Figure 1 (a), (b), is open to the Pacific Ocean as a marine gateway and is ringed by large cities and coastal industrial zones together with port facilities, all constituting a concentration of prime importance for socio-economic activities. The Trans-Tokyo Bay Highway (TTB highway), which crosses Tokyo Bay and provides a direct transportation link between the west and east sides of the bay, has long been a sort of “dream-come-true” project in Japan. As shown in Figure 2, linked to the Tokyo Bay Shore Highway, Metropolitan Inter-city Expressway, Tokyo Outer Ring Road, Tateyama Express-way, and others, it will play an important role as an integral part of the regional highway network to help promote spatial redistribution and multi polarization of urban functions, thus strengthening cooperation between cities and restructuring the metropolitan region. The TTB Highway is a project of 15.1 km in length designed as a toll highway to cross the bay by tunnel and bridge, and will require ten years to complete at a total cost of more than 1,438 billion yen (US$13.077 billion). Following more than 20 years of feasibility and environmental assessment studies, construction of this giant offshore highway project commenced in May 1989 as the first large-scale highway project with private-sector participation under the prevailing Road Law in Japan, and is now steadily proceeding toward the goal of completion in fiscal1997. This report outlines the entire TTB Highway project, including the waterproofing measures against high water pressure and the rapid construction method applied in the construction of shield tunnel sections.

INTRODUCTION The principle line of the Caracas Metro is located generally along the most important east-west traffic corridor of the city from the yards and shops in Propatria at the western extremity to Petare, and eventually beyond to Palo Verde at the eastern end, a route distance of 21 kilometers. There will be 23 stations along the alignment, underground, at grade and elevated, and the line is forecast to handle 1,209,100 passengers daily by the year 2000 with a travel time of 29 minutes between Propatria and Petare. This principle line was divided into three sections for design purposes: Propatria-Fuerzas Armadas, Section I, Fuerzas Armadas-Chacaito, Section II and Chacaito-Petare, Section III. These sections were further subdivided into subsections for construction purposes. The Venezuelan Government, through its Caracas Metro Office in the Ministry of Public Works, awarded design contracts in sections to PARSONS BRINCKERHOFF-TUDOR-BECHTEL for Propatria-Fuerzas Armadas, Section I, OCOIDESA-GRID-APM for Fuerzas Armadas-Chacaito, Section II and OCOIDESA GRID-APM for Chacaito-Petare, Section III. Construction contracts were awarded by international bidding and work is now underway, by joint venture organizations of Venezuelan and foreign firms. The first two sections are under the administration of a company of Engineer/Inspectors in each section. The construction supervision of contracts in the first section is under the administration of the Venezuelan firm, Gómez-Celis-Herrera, (GCH) Engineers, acting under contract to the new C.A. Metro de Caracas that replaced ' the former Office of the Metro. The Propatria-Fuerzas Armadas section, approximately seven kilometers long, consists in part of the 2,951 linear meters of twin-bore

In longwall mining, ventilation is considered one of the more effective means for controlling gases and dust. In order to study longwall ventilation in a controlled environment, researchers built a unique physical model called the Longwall Instrumented Aerodynamic Model (LIAM) in a laboratory at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) campus. LIAM is a 1:30 scale physical model geometrically designed to simulate a single longwall panel with a three-entry headgate and tailgate configuration, along with three back bleeder entries. It consists of a twopart heterogeneous gob that simulates a less compacted unconsolidated zone and more compacted consolidated zone. It has a footprint of 8.94 m (29 ft.) by 4.88 m (16 ft.), with a simulated face length of 220 m (720 ft.) in full scale. LIAM is built with critical details of the face, gob, and mining machinery. It is instrumented with pressure gauges, flow anemometers, temperature probes, a fan, and a data acquisition system. Scaling relationships are derived on the basis of Reynolds and Richardson numbers to preserve the physical and dynamic similitude. This paper discusses the findings from a study conducted in the LIAM to investigate the gob-face interaction, airflow patterns within the gob, and airflow dynamics on the face for varying roof caving characteristics. Results are discussed to show the impact of caving behind the shields on longwall ventilation.

Loudoun Water is currently implementing a quarry to reservoir conversion that will improve water supply reliability in periods of drought and flexibility in water supply operations when turbidity in its Potomac River supplies are high. The Milestone Reservoir Project consists of an inter-tie to the existing Potomac River Pipeline; new pipeline and tunnel; and a pumped intake and outlet works. Planned construction involves significant risks due to underground conditions which includes hard, igneous rock and high groundwater at the creek crossing. In addition, the site is constrained by Goose Creek, an adjacent residence, active mining in a quarry next to the new reservoir, public use of adjacent park space, and the Washington and Old Dominion Trail. Working with these constraints will require close coordination with active mining operations and public and private property owners. Safety of personnel involved with construction also represents a concern with quarry high walls over 30 meters in height near the planned construction. In consideration of key projects risks, Loudoun Water determined that an innovative CMAR delivery approach provided the best opportunity to achieve its goals in quality, innovation, front-end cost and schedule certainty, and operational flexibility and reliability. What matters most to Loudoun Water is the value in having a builder participate in the design process where key decisions can be made based on consideration of risks, cost, schedule, quality, and operability and maintainability of the system. While a progressive design-build delivery model may have produced similar outcomes, Loudoun Water had already invested in substantial development of the design for the work, and ultimately, CMAR provided Loudoun Water the opportunity to retain the partnership with the design team while gaining valuable input from a contractor. Among the challenges with CMAR in the Commonwealth of Virginia is a substantial limitation on self-performance corresponding to 10 percent of the construction value of the work. A significant industry outreach program was initiated by Loudoun Water to encourage participation with incentives in contract terms that allowed for the CMAR Contractor to make a reasonable profit. This paper reviews the CMAR procurement process and discusses contract incentives that were adopted to promote the work within the constraints of contract law in Virginia.

A key deliverable of the study was information to de-risk the perception of SMS mining for investors the minerals, and that deep-sea mining of SMS material is technically feasible, commercially viable and can safely be managed as a sustainable marine resource industry. INTRODUCTION On April 14, 1994, the joint venture of Kiewit Construction Company and Kenny Construction Company was awarded a 76 million dollar contract for the construction of the New Hampshire Avenue Tunnels in Washington D.C. The Notice to Proceed was given on May16, 1994 and scheduled completion is September 1997. This project is one of five contracts for the Mid-City E Line as part of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA)Greenbelt Route. Once completed, the Mid-City E Line subway tunnels will connect service between the U Street-Cardozo and Fort Totten stations (See Figure 1). The New Hampshire Avenue Tunnels project consists of approximately 6800 feet of twin single track subway tunnels, three vertical shafts, associated utility work and comprehensive restoration work. Section E4b involved two methods of tunneling along the project alignment. The first method consisted of the well known soft ground open face shield driven tunnel and the second method consisted of tunnels driven using the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) . The NATM section of twin tunnels begins at the Buchanan Vent Shaft and proceeds approximately 2630 feet under Rock Creek Cemetery, including the Farragut Emergency Access Shaft and connects approximately 390 feet beyond to the existing Fort Totten running tunnels (See Figure 2). Special considerations had to be given to the portion of the tunnel alignment which passed beneath Rock Creek Cemetery. The analyses and subsequent selection of the tunnel support system were based on anticipated geological conditions and the sensitive tunnel alignment. The New Hampshire Avenue Tunnels project was the second soft ground NATM project in Washington D.C. The first, by no coincidence, was completed at the adjacent Fort Totten Station and Running Tunnels Project by Mergentime/Hochtief, AJV. Currently, on a nearby WMATA jobsite, the J.F. Shea Construction Company has started a third NATM soft ground tunnel. Nonspecific airway hyperresponsiveness is a central feature of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and has been associated with atopy in the presence of environmental exposures such as smoking. Coal miners may develop emphysema and lung function decrements related to their dust exposure. To investigate the roles of airway responsiveness and atopy in these effects, we evaluated the relationships among smoking, a history of hay fever or seasonal rhinitis, and airway responsiveness (AR) in a group of underground bituminous coal miners and nonmining controls. All subjects had a normal baseline percent predicted FEV1. Increased airway responsiveness was defined as a 15% or greater decrease in FEV1 following methacholine inhalation. 85 miners (45%) and 99 controls (46%) were current smokers, 59 miners (31%) and 55 controls (26%) were lifetime nonsmokers; former smokers were excluded from further analysis. Overall, 25% of 144 miners included in this analysis had increased AR, as opposed to 29% of 155 controls. Thirty-seven percent of both miners and controls had a history of seasonal rhinitis. Significantly fewer miners (15%) had a history of hay fever compared to controls (25%, p< 0.05). Figure 1 shows the prevalence of increased airway responsiveness in miners and controls in association with hay fever. In both smoking and non smoking miners the presence of a hay fever history was significantly (p < 0.05) associated with a higher prevalence of increased AR. Little effect was seen in smoking (p = 0.827) and nonsmoking (p = 0.940) controls. Figure 2 shows a similar higher prevalence of increased AR associated with symptoms of seasonal rhinitis in the mining group. This was significant (p < 0.01) only in the smoking miners. No effect was noted in the controls. These data suggest that the association of a history of hay fever or seasonal rhinitis symptoms with increased airway responsiveness may be more common in coal mining, compared to non-dusty occupations. Although the implication of these data are unclear, further study of miners with a history of hay fever or seasonal rhinitis is warranted. Between 2005 and 2021, surface mining haul trucks were involved in 54 fatal incidents in the United States [1]. Collision warning and avoidance systems (CXS) can help haul truck operators navigate their route safely. The evaluation of CXS object detection performance for surface mining haul trucks relies on the positional accuracy of the ground truth instrument. As part of a holistic approach, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) characterized the accuracy of a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) that serves as the ground truth instrument to determine object position and velocity in CXS object detection performance testing. We used precision surveying equipment to establish ground truth points for comparison with GNSS data collected for static positional measurements and reduced-scale straightline vehicle dynamic tests. We conducted these tests with real-time kinematics (RTK) and then satellite-based augmentation systems (SBAS). For the dynamic tests, we measured a distance error of 1.34 m (4.40 ft) using RTK and 1.50 m (4.92 ft) using an SBAS. This research will provide CXS manufacturers and CXS researchers a basis for evaluating the positional accuracy of CXS. Note that we did not evaluate any CXS in this experiment.

Since the advent of longwall mining systems in the United States, mine operators are increasingly relying on methane drainage techniques to supplement the ventilation system. The most commonly used technique is the vertical gob borehole. The number and spacing of vertical gob boreholes per panel is generally based on experience and underground conditions. To design a more efficient methane drainage systems, mine operators must accurately determine methane gas produced. Thus, mine operators must monitor gas flow and methane gas concentration on every vertical gob borehole on active panels at least once or twice during each 8-hr shift. As the mine grows, it is possible to have more than one operating longwall and many vertical gob boreholes. Thus, daily visits to each vertical gob borehole site can become very time consuming. During weekends when methane gas concentrations typically drop because there is no mining activity, borehole sites may not be visited. To obtain accurate gas flow data, a gob borehole monitoring system was designed and constructed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM). Gas flow, methane gas concentration, gas temperature, barometric pressure, and vacuum pressure of the exhaust fan are the parameters collected by the system. The system also includes circuitry for automatic shutdown of the exhaust fan and an alarm system before an unsafe condition is created. Telemetry components were also integrated into the system to allow for transmission of borehole data to the mine office. As a test, the system was installed and operated on a vertical gob borehole for six months. Test results indicated that intermittent measurements with hand-held instruments from vertical gob boreholes were always higher than gas flows measurements made by the gob gas analyzer system. This paper describes the system components, operational characteristics, and the results of the test program.
