Automation is a word whose meaning has been broadened by popular usage to include any labor saving device. We with restrict our usage to the replacement of human judgement by instrumental measurement and mathematical analysis in the control of industrial processes. Mineral concentration is an area which has resisted automation because of the great difficulty in developing measuring instruments which can exist in the rugged environment and can measure useful properties with acceptable accuracy. This is not the only factor limiting progress, but until recently it has been of over-whelming importance. The development of on-stream X-ray analysers, magnetic flowmeters and nuclear density meters for mineral slurries has eliminated this obvious barrier and is enabling us to locate and attack the less obvious problems which still limit our ability to automate concentrators. If we examine the history of automation in industries which are highly automated we find that it has usually gone through three distinct phases. The first phase has been regulation. This is the simplest form of control and involves manipulating some variable whose value is of no importance in order to maintain the value of some other variable which is important at a constant specified value in spite of disturbances which may occur in other variables which affect it. A simple example is the use of a control valve to maintain a constant flow of fluid in a line in spite of changes in pressure in the vessels at the ends of the line. Lynn lake, Manitoha, where Sherritt has operated a copper-nickel mine since 1954, is located north of the 56th parallel approximately SOO miles north of Winnipeg. Sherritt's new, 3,000 tpd, copper-zinc Fox Mine is situated 30 miles southwest of Lynn lake. This paper focuses on the Fox Mine concentrator, hut first some background information. Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited started mining operations as a copper-zinc producer in 1931 at Sherridon, Manitoba, 150 miles south of Lynn Lake. As Sherridon fizzled out development of a series of nickel-copper orebodies commenced at Lynn Lake. The Forward process was developed to treat the nickel concentrate from the Lynn concentrator. Sherritt's ammonia leaching process is now history and is expected to gain more prominence as pressure is applied to the mining industry for closer environmental control. But few are aware of the fact that the present Lynn Lake crushing plant and concentrator were dismantled in the autumn of 1951 and freighted from Sherridon by tractor train during the winters of 1952 and 1953. The copper-zinc orehody at Fox Mine was discovered early in 1961 by geophysical methods which included both airborne and ground surveys. It is part of a ,large body of massive and semi-massive sulphides consisting chiefly of pyrite; with chalcopyrite, sphalerite (containing 7-9% iron) and pyrrhotite in varying proportions which occur within a series of volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The total mineralized zone is a lenticular body with a minimum average length and width of 1,350 feet and 66 feet respectively, to the explored depth of 2,000 feet. The average sulphide content is 67%. Higher zinc zones are masses of pyrite grains cemented by sphalerite with lower than average copper content. Zones higher in copper and lower in zinc are slightly more quartzose. Gold and silver are present in small amounts roughly proportional to the copper content.

"INTRODUCTION An inherent aspect of any tunnelling project is ground risk: how it is identified, quantified and managed throughout the various stages of a project. Early identification of these risks, such as adverse ground conditions or potential obstructions is crucial; however specific identification of all risks will inevitably be limited by the extent of the desk study, ground investigation and accuracy of as-built information available, particularly in a densely populated urban environment such as London with a long and varied history of development. It is therefore crucial to have suitable plans and procedures in place for dealing with potential ground risk scenarios if they occur during construction work to ensure the safety of the workforce and to protect nearby critical assets. A number of experiences of potential ground risk were encountered during the Sprayed Concrete Lining (SCL) works on Crossrail contract C300/410 which was constructed by a joint venture of BAM Ferrovial Kier (BFK). The C300/410 works, undertaken in the heart of London, comprised of over 2.5km of SCL tunnels for Bond Street and Tottenham Court Road Stations and the Fisher Street crossover, as well as two 6.2km TBM tunnel drives between Royal Oak and Farringdon. BFK appointed Donaldson Associates as their SCL designers for the works; together they were responsible for excavation stability up to the point of ring closure. Despite the majority of SCL tunnelling works at Bond Street and Tottenham Court Road being through the favourable medium of London clay, there remained areas of local geotechnical challenges. Some of these were expected from the outset, some became apparent as works progressed from records of other nearby excavation works, and some were only encountered during tunnel excavation. Being located in the centre of London meant that there always remained a possibility of meeting some form of obstruction from previous structures. However, identification of all potential issues prior to the commencement of the works was challenging and proved to not be entirely possible. Through a series of case studies, this paper documents incidents where obstructions or adverse ground conditions arose. These scenarios all had the potential to cause safety risks, impact the tunnel design and/or construction methods and ultimately add time and cost to the works. The paper discusses how these challenges were overcome which utilised in part, a progressive risk reduction cycle, feeding back knowledge gained at all stages of construction into the approach for undertaking the works. It also examines what could be done in future to further reduce the ground risk through early identification, communication, education and appropriate contingency measures."

Careful consideration is given to the type of cleaning equipment and control sys- teas to be used when selecting circuits for wash-ing fine coal (28M x 0 size fraction). However, the desliming, declaying and sizing procedures required to ensure efficient operation normally are not evaluated in sufficient detail resulting in disappointing system performance. This paper details desliming and dewatering circuit design which is extremely effective based on recent test data. The circuit maintains control of the 28M x 0 (declayed) size fraction with minimal misplaced material and maximized circuit efficiency. A discussion of circuit design parameters and control systems, as well as results from the testing program, are included in this text.

[The two types of sulfide deposits in the Bathhurst Newcastle area are; (a) epignetic fissure deposits, and (b) massive sulfide deposits. Geological evidence has been variously interpreted to suggest a syngenetic origin, a source bed' origin, or a magmatic hydrothermal origin for the massive sulfide deposits. Sulfides disseminated through the black shales and argillites of the host rocks are enriched in S32 (mean value 22.34, S34. = 5.8 per mil) relative to the meteoritic standard of 22.21, and have a broad spread in range of values. S32/S34 ratios of sulfide minerals from the deposits occur in two distinct groups. The massive sulfide deposits exhibit ratios between 21.88 to 22.05, while the fissure deposits exhibit ratios between 22.18 and 22.21. These results suggest two separate sources for the sulfur, each, however, resulting in magmatic hydrthermal deposition because of the narrow spread of ratios in each group. Granite intrusive into the host rocks of the sulfide deposits have a mean K/A age of 386 ± 10 M.Y. Lead minerals in the sulfide deposits have a mean nodel lead age of 370±20 M. Y. Thus the lead minerals and the granite bodies were emplaced during the same major orogenic event. Sulfide minerals from magmatic hydrothermal deposit have a very narrow range of S32/S34 values, as do those of the Bathurst area. It seems reasonable, therefore, that well homogenized magmatic hydrothermal solutions are the most logical source of the sulfide deposits. Furthermore, the homogeneity of the lead isotopic abundance data gives strong independent evidence that the ores are of a magmatic hydrothermal origin.]

American Girl Mine is located in the Cargo Muchacho Mountains in the southeastern Imperial Valley of Southern California. Production from the current open pit mine and heap leach recovery system began in early 1989. Previous mining and gold recovery took place commencing in 1987 at the Padre Madre site, situated adjacent to the American Girl site to the southwest. In mid-1990, a 790-tonne-per-day underground gold mine and mill went into production. Approximately 6,500 troy ounces of gold per month are recovered from the combined open pit underground mine operation. Copper in the form of Azurite [Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2] and Malachite [Cu2CO3(OH)2] are abundant in the mined ores (Henshaw, 1942). The high solubility of these minerals in caustic cyanide solutions has a negative impact on carbon adsorption and electrowin processes. This paper presents the results of monitoring programs, process chemistry, and control changes introduced at American Girl Mine to abate production complications in the refinery and measures taken to minimize solution gold losses in the adsorption circuit(s).

Thermal damage is an urgent problem faced by deep mining. High-temperature rock mass, hot water and electromechanical equipment are the sources of the thermal damage. The increase in air temperature in mine tunnel is the result of fluid–solid coupling heat transfer from various heat sources. This paper takes a roadway with hot water and a mine car as the research object. Based on the Fluent, Static Structural and Steady-State Thermal modules in ANSYS, the thermal-fluid–structure coupling analysis in the roadway is carried out. It is found that the hot water has a significant effect on the thermal environment of the mine. Under the experimental parameters, the maximum heat flux density and equivalent elastic strain at the interface between the hot water and the rock are 9789.3 W/m2 and 0.00054532 m/m, respectively. The heat flux distribution in the rock area near the mine car does not change much, and the equivalent elastic strain value in this area is high. After the air is heated in the hot water area, the temperature curve changes gradually and then rises steadily. By changing the inlet air temperature parameter, it is found that the lower the inlet air temperature, the better the cooling effect, and the change of the inlet air temperature can change the air temperature field in the roadway as a whole. By changing the parameter of inlet air speed, it is found that higher wind speed brings better cooling effect, but with the increase in wind speed, the cooling effect of roadway thermal environment is very limited. When the wind speed increases from 5 m/s to 10 m/s, the air temperature of most measuring points drops by more than 2℃; when the wind speed increases from 15 m/s to 20 m/s, the air temperature of most measuring points drops below 0.7℃. After the wind speed reaches a certain value, the cooling effect of ventilation is very limited.

"The need to fill the void space or annulus created between an excavated tunnel or shaft and the final lining system has long been a requirement in underground construction. Most of those types of voids are created as a result of employing the two pass tunneling lining method. Filling of this void is called backfilling. For many years the materials used as backfill were primarily reinforced and non-reinforced concrete, sanded grout, neat cement grout, or blown-in sand/pea gravel. However, in the past 20 years the use of cellular grouts/cellular concrete as the backfill material has greatly increased. Most cellular grout is made of a mixture of water, Portland cement (with or without the addition of fly ash), a foaming agent and admixtures such as a water-reducer or superplasticizer.It is the authors’ preference to use the term cellular grout as opposed to cellular concrete since by ACI Concrete Terminology an ACI Standard (ACI CT 13), concrete contains aggregates. Normally cellular grout does not contain sand (finite aggregate), but almost never contain course aggregates.The authors believe there are several reasons for this increased use of cellular grout as backfill, such as:• The increase utilization of the various trenchless tunneling methods. Tunnels constructed using trenchless method tend to be smaller in size, excavated diameter or cross sectional area. Making man-entry for placing backfill from inside the secondary liner, utilizing pre-installed grout posts, more difficult if not impossible. It is these workspace restrictions that are the drivers as to when to utilize grout ports installed during the pipe/liner fabrication versus grout delivery pipes installed within the void/annulus space.• The ability of cellular backfills to be pumped and flow longer distances.• The unit weight of cellular grouts can be controlled by mix design and generally can range from 560 Kg/m3 (35 lbs/CF) to 1040 Kg/m3 (65 lbs/CF)."

Dawsonite bearing oil shale of Colorado's Green River Formation offers a unique and vast (6.5 billion tons of Al2O3) resource of easily extractable alumina. The processing methods required by the thermal reactions dawsonite and its oil shale carrier also require production of shale oil, soda ash, and nahcolite as marketable coproducts. These production methods are presented. The alumina production process is contrasted with the Bayer process to describe technical advantages of extraction of alumina from oil shale which may offset the problems associated with processing a relatively lean ore. While alumina production from oil shale requires development of new technology, the technical problems appear solvable. Only the political problems arising from the now onerous and completely unnecessary Federal oil-shale withdrawal appear less solvable.

The success of any industrial mineral project requires an accurate forecast of the demand fir the material as well as accurate projections of costs and prices. This paper develops a general method of predicting mineral requirements and applies it to the case of graphite. The basic method is to explain graphite consumption in each of its major uses by the output and manufacturing technology of the using industry. Once these underlying factors are determined, they can he projected to establish future requirements. This forecast is critical to the evaluation of a new source of supply, such as the graphite resources of Upper Michigan.

The Bulldog CIP plant treats the slime portion of current tailings and reclaimed flotation tailings from the adjoining 350 tpd (3.67 kg/s) silver-lead flotation mill. Changes to the dredge reclaimer, pulp storage tank and trash removal system have allowed an increase in tonnage treated to a sustained 460tpd (4.83kg/s). CIP feed is 3-4 oz/T Ag (102.9-137.1 ppm). Following conventional cyanidation, carbon is added to the slurry. Silver loaded carbon is stripped in atmospheric-pressure vessels using hot caustic cyanide. Silver recovery from this solution is by Zadra- type cells. Some of the modifications to the plant and operating techniques are discussed.

The Illinois State Geological Survey added Minerals Processing to its capabilities in 1966. Subsequently, the Minerals Processing Team and several Geologists collectively thought what neither would have thought of separately. The results included a number of projects. discussed here are: 1) The Utilization of the Fines from Kitty Litter as a Bonding Agent for Iron Ore Pellets; 2) Separating Plant Waste from a Commercial Silica Sand Producer into two marketable products, including a closely sized Silica Sand; 3) Marketable Feldspar Sand and Silica Sand from Dune Sands near the Kankakee River; and 4) A Method for Making Metallurgical Grade Fluorspar more desirable as Blast Furnace (Steel) Feed.

Since the mid 60's, several haul cycle simulation programs have been developed. However, most of these programs are believed to employ the continuous, rather than the discrete, event-oriented simulation approach to determine the haul cycle times. This paper describes the recently developed haul cycle simulation approach where time is advanced in varying amounts only as the system changes occur. This approach results in greater computational accuracy and increased computational efficiency. The program is written in FORTRAN and requires equipment performance curve and haul road profiles as input. Unique program capabilities include the handling of switchbacks and intersections. The program uses a master data file concept in which various haul road profiles found during the mine life can be simulated all in one job submission. The results of the model validation using the actual time study data provided by an open pit mine operator near Tucson, Arizona, are also described in this paper.

Watertightness is of central importance in hydraulic and underground structures but has always been associated with a risk, as demonstrated by the very high impact that water inflows have on the damage of linings and infrastructure (Howard, 1991; Sandrone and Labiouse, 2011). Concrete is vulnerable to groundwater and chemical contaminants in the soil. These can leach into the pores and cracks of the concrete and degrade its integrity, causing spalling and corroding the reinforcing steel. Moisture migrating into the building can also degrade structural elements over time and lead to mold and other hazards to occupants’ health. In this connection, the demands placed on the setup and detailed design of the seal depending on the negative influence by water on the one hand and on the other hand on the function of a construction in view to its watertightness classification. Thus, the reliable functioning of a seal is of particular significance in the case of traffic tunnels, which are not easily accessible for all subsequent repairs after the construction in seepage water and especially when located in a pressure water zone (risk–cost assessment). Requirements for the long-term efficiency and quality of underground structures have increased in recent decades. Today, the standard lifetime requirement for an underground infrastructure project is 100 to 120 years and, in some cases, even higher. This calls for high increased attention to the durability of the whole structure and of each individual element. Standards, which started as application guidelines given by the manufacturers, are available in the market since the 1980s and are constantly adapted to the current developments in various technical committees. Differentiations are made between: Manufactures application guidelines, case studies or published articles Test standards for the laboratory to guideline the testing procedures (air temperature, type of test equipment, dimensions, test speed, test duration, concentration, type of liquids, monitoring, tolerances, interpretation of results, documentation, etc.), developed by committees based on material and laboratory experts Application standards, which include test standards but also the related minimum performance requirements (values) for material, processing, and quality assurance (practical tolerances), developed by committees based on a wide range of experts (e.g., designers, construction companies, applicators, manufactures, owners, test institutes, quality engineers) and therefore also based on a wide field of experience, different views and up-dated case studies. AngloGold Ashanti operates the world`s deepest mine, Mponeng gold mine, in South Africa. A vast refrigeration and ventilation system provides acceptable working conditions 3800m below surface at 60°C rock temperature. In such a system, optimisation and assessment of modifications becomes very difficult. With that in mind, a research project was launched to determine whether recently developed system simulation technology can be applied to a mine as vast and complex as Mponeng. Using the techniques and methods as implemented in FLOWNEX software, it was indeed proven to be possible to do a mine-wide combined simulation of compressed air flow, ventilation air psychrometry and refrigeration water systems. Interactions between the various streams included heat transfer, pressure drop, evaporation and condensation. The simulation model was used in a parametric study to test various water flow and temperature operating points for the refrigeration system. It was found that, given current limitations, the mine refrigeration system is running fairly close to optimal but with some opportunities for improvement. The simulation model also provided useful insight for future changes or extensions to the system.

For the REM (Réseau Express Métropolitain) project, a 2500 m tunnel was built using a tunnel boring machine (TBM) under the Montreal Pierre Elliott Trudeau Airport (ADM). Although the geology under the Montreal Airport (ADM) would have been suitable for an excavation with a hard rock machine, the rst section reuired an earth pressure balance (EPB) TBM due to the soft soil located under wetlands. After excavating 280 m, the TBM was blocked in a transition zone of unconsolidated, water-bearing soils directly above the underlying bedrock. A free air intervention was not possible due to these geological conditions. After several failed attempts to create a slurry cake for hyperbaric interventions, a ground freezing system was designed and implemented, incorporating angled pipes drilled from outside the wetlands to directly in front of the cutterhead. This paper discusses the engineering reuired to form a frozen, water-tight zone in front of the cutterhead using liuid nitrogen. It also describes the complex method of replacing the disc cutters while holding the ground freezing system active in a manner protecting the health and safety of the workers.

The development and testing by the Bureau of Mines of a prototype crib and cable conveyor for handling large rocks are discussed, and possible modifications of the concept for a production model are examined.

Phosphate rock is the primary source of phosphorus, an element necessary to all forms of life--plant, animal, and human. While phosphorus finds many uses in everyday life, it is an irreplaceable ingredient in all complete plant foods. With the present need for intensive farming, the fertility of the soil can be maintained only by external additions supplied by mines or other sources. A major consideration in any mining operation is to establish the economic and ecological impact of the development on the local population as well as the national interest. The Commodity Data Summaries, as published by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), is a ready reference concerning the importance of phosphate to the national and local interest. The summary of domestic and world pro¬duction is given in Table 1. During 19722 the demand for marketable phosphate rock exceeded the supply in the United States and the rest of the world. Domestic and world reserves are more than adequate to meet furture demands. Phosphate rock prices firmed and export prices increased, reflecting the change from oversupply to a shortage of phosphatic fertilizers. Demand is expected to exceed supply through 1973. New fertilizer plant capacity planned for 1973-74 will increase the production of phosphate rock by more than 5 million tons in the United States. Morocco and Spanish Sahara are scheduled to increase their production to 18 and 3 million tpy, respectively, within 2 to 3 years. The domestic phosphate rock production for 1972 was 40.8 million tons and 1973 was 42.1 million tons.' Industry, with government-supported programs, will emphasize restoration of mined land and solution of the colloidal slime disposal problem in Florida. The foregoing information comes by courtesy of The Division of Nonmetallic Minerals of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, January 1973. The summary gives a great deal of information but does not give a complete picture. There are many supporting industries which contrib¬ute to the area in which the mines are located. The figures shown in Table 1 deal with concentrates. To produce such concentrates many more tons of waste overburden and ore must be moved. Because of the competitive nature of the phosphate rock industry, data on concentration ratios not only are difficult to obtain but also are not for publication by companies. The concentration ratios vary from one mine to the next in Florida as well as in Tennessee and the western United States. To produce 42.4 million tons of phos¬phate rock in the United States required moving about 350 to 400 million tons of material. Domestic Industry. In 1972 some 26 firms and the Tennessee Valley Authority produced phosphate rock, with several firms produc¬ing from more than one mine. The distribution of marketable phos¬phate rock production was: Florida and North Carolina 82%; Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming 13%; and Missouri and Tennessee 5%. The value of this production was $223 million. The principal consuming classifications were: agriculture 75%, soaps and detergents 5%, plating and polishing 3%, animal feed supplements 4%, and miscellaneous applications 13%. Over 5,000 firms processed end-prod¬ucts for agricultural purposes. Uses of Phosphate Rock. The tendency in the United States has been to produce more phosphoric acid by the wet process, while the production of electric furnace phosphorus, triple superphosphate, and ordinary superphosphate has been on the decline. Exports of phosphate rock have been on the increase for several years and in 1971 reached 33% of total production. However, export sales of phos¬phate rock are expected to decline in the years ahead, both in total tons of sales and in percentage of production as domestic sales increase (see Table 2). The description and chemistry involved in the production of phos¬phate fertilizers is too complicated to be presented here. The Waggaman13 book is a very thorough reference on the subject involv¬ing production, utilization, and chemistry. The various operations generally have chemical plants near the dry plants or ship to associated chemical plants for further processing. Wet rock, dry rock, and ground dry rock of various grades are sold. In addition various grades of calcined phosphate rock, including defluorinated phosphate rock for animal food supplements, are pro¬duced. Various grades of phosphoric acid, superphosphate, triple suerphosphate, as well as diammonium phosphate, are produced. For two consecutive years the author and his wife have been fortunate enough to have been invited by the Peoples Republic of China to work with Chinese geologists of the Geological Bureau of the Ministry of Metallurgical Industries (MMI). Our visits, each of which lasted 7-8 weeks, took us to northwestern Sichuan, central Anhui, and much of Hebei Province, as shown in the accompanying drawing. We were asked to evaluate, criticize, and offer suggestions on the exploration and mining techniques used by the Chinese. Our commission both years was centered on gold, although we were also to visit other operations when the opportunity arose. In 1986, the visit primarily concerned with disseminated "Carlin" type gold deposits; in 1987, with "Greenstone" type gold deposits. Gold has been targeted by the Chinese as a metal of importance to the nation. Several governmental agencies have received direction and budgets to seek and develop gold properties. Besides the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry, gold is being sought by the Ministry of Geology, the China Gold Corporation, and reportedly the Peoples Army. There is considerable competition among these agencies. It is not uncommon to find two or more agencies working in the same general area. However, communication between the groups is minimal. Last year, we toured a small mine at Bambishan. We could see a diamond drill across the valley. The rig belonged to another Ministry and my guides voiced their curiosity to know what their competitors were finding. Mining, too, is not the monolithic bureaucracy that most Westerners anticipate in China. There are various levels of mining. These differ not only in sophistication, but in ownership. First, for small deposits the state allows "Peoples Mines". These can be owned and worked by individuals. The individual owner-miner may hire relatives or neighbors and give them a wage or he may turn the mine into a joint ownership situation. They

The Delaware County Regional Water Quality Control Authority (DELCORA) will be adding tunnel infrastructure to its wastewater conveyance system. This program involves the construction of a conveyance/storage tunnel and related facilities. The proposed 12- foot to 14-foot (±) finished diameter, TBM mined deep rock tunnel spans over 8.5 miles and lies approximately 80 ft-120 ft below the surface. The system is connected to the surface by at least five vertical online shafts and one offline shaft with associated 800ft long adit. This paper provides project details including data on the geologic conditions in which the tunnel will be constructed.
