Significant effort was made in 2003 and 2004 to upgrade the existing instrumentation and process control infrastructure at the Phelps Dodge Bagdad copper concentrator. Specifically, • cameras were installed on the feed belt for online image analysis data, • ultrasonic level sensors were installed for froth height and sump level control, • a trial froth image system was installed on one of the rougher rows, and • a new expert system to tie everything together was integrated and tuned in-house. Control philosophy, observations, opinions, and general tips and tricks are discussed with the hope of assisting other plant personnel and expert system integrators.

The following are some of his thoughts on uranium?s place in the global energy picture. ME: What are Energy Fuels Resources? thoughts on the global nuclear power industry? Steele: The global nuclear power industry is a major contributor to the electrical needs of the world. Though generation by nuclear reactors has primarily attracted attention through the reactor accidents at Three Mile Island and Chernobyl, nuclear power continues to quietly and safely provide power to a growing and power-hungry world population. As of March 2008, 30 countries were operating 439 nuclear power reactors. Nuclear power plants provided about 15 percent of the world?s electricity production in 2007. France leads the world in nuclear utilization, with 77 percent of its power coming from nuclear plants. And Lithuania, Slovakia and Belgium each derive more than 50 percent of their power needs from nuclear plants. For much of the developed world, nuclear generation has already been contributing significantly to the supply of electricity. Additionally, 34 new nuclear plants are under construction in 14 countries. Leading the rush to build new nuclear generating plants are China, Russia and India. Each of these countries is building six new nuclear power plants. These 18 plants, totaling almost 12,000 MW of generation capacity, will require about 7.25 kt (16 million lbs) of U3O8 for their initial fuel load and will consume about 2.45 kt/a (5.4 million lbs/year) for the rest of their operating lives. The rest of the world, outside of the United States, has used nuclear power as a viable and economic generation alternative since the commercialization of utility nuclear reactors. And current activity supports the strong future of the nuclear alternative internationally.

A sociotechnical system (STS) creates a framework that allows an examination of how social and technical factors affect organizational outcomes within a specific environmental context. STS has been rigorously studied with a primary research focus addressing worker-technology interactions. Although these interactions are important, the social processes and interactions that occur whenever any technical or environmental change is introduced into the system have been undervalued. If social processes are better understood, mining organizations could efficiently prepare and stabilize for such changes. With this goal in mind, we sought to extend STS theory through applying principles of meta-design to analyze the results of two case study interventions. Specifically, we studied the impact of an unregulated dust control technology (the Helmet-CAM) and a regulated dust control technology (the Continuous Personal Dust Monitor) on factors within an STS including employees’ knowledge of, communication about, and use of technology to mitigate respirable dust sources. The results are presented in a way that first, addresses the overarching principles of meta-design STS including organizational participation, flexibility, and communication and second, examines how technology implementation processes differ when the organization is complying with a formal, higher-level requirement. Results show that a prominent focus on the social factors within an STS framework could help reduce unpredictability on the technical side and may improve communication within the system to help reduce adoption time, especially if and when accompanying a new, formal work process.

From the massive equipment that moves the earth, to the parts that keep the equipment moving, it was all on display for more than 35,000 people who at-tended MinExpo 2008 at the Las Vegas Convention Center Sept. 22-24. In the largest show in the illustrious history of MinExpo, the success of the recent commodity boom was reflected in the more than 55,700 hm2 (600,000 sq ft) of floor space that was jam-packed with nearly 1,300 vendors. Among them, the makers of the industry?s largest machines, displaying their latest and greatest trucks, shovels, excavators, drills and other mining equipment. During the nearly decade-long commodities boom, equipment makers have worked hard to keep up with demand while also investing heavily in research and development. The beneficiaries of this R&D is the end user who saw first-hand at MinExpo 2008 the many advances that have already been made in safety, comfort and productivity from all the manufacturers. R&D has also helped spark more talk of automation, which is being used already at some of the world?s largest mines. Caterpillar and Komatsu have worked with the technology in surface mining and Bucyrus and Sandvik are among the industry leaders applying the science of automation to underground mines. Technology has in-creased greatly since the idea of moving massive equipment remotely was first knocked around and the idea of entire fleets operating around the clock seems to be getting closer to reality. But, until that happens, MinExpo attendees were treated to a show that featured some of the most impressive current machines the industry has to offer. In the largest booth space of the convention, Caterpillar (www.cat.com) displayed the culmination of an ambitious $280-million dollar investment, with the introduction of its new mining fleet of four new trucks. The F-series was un-veiled with common features in safety, cabs, engines, frames and bodies and Tier 2 compliant engines. The F series also features a return to the electric drive option. ?When our customers asked us for improvements to our mining trucks, we responded by making a record investment in every single truck in our line, as well as the increased capacity to produce more of them,? said Cater-pillar group president Stu Levenick. ?New technologies have allowed us to make trucks more reliable, easier to maintain and more friendly to the operator and to the environment.? The 793-series is in the 218- to 227-t (240- to 250-st) class that will be available in both mechanical (793F) and electric (793F ac) versions. The electric drive-only 313- t (345-st) 795F was also introduced, while the flagship 797B truck is in the process of being replaced by the new 797F mechanical drive, maintaining its 345- to 363-t (380- to 400-st) target payload. Completing Caterpillar?s new mining truck line will be new versions of the 785 and 789 mechanical drive trucks. The next generation of trucks will be phased into production during the next two years, with the Cat ac drive models expected to go into production in late 2010. Anecdotal evidence suggests that re-entering a sealed heating poses a significant hazard, whereby the original heating is rejuvenated at an accelerated rate forcing withdrawal and re-sealing of the area. Bulk-scale laboratory experiments using a two-metre column confirm these mine site observations. A high volatile bituminous coal from New South Wales, Australia was allowed to develop a significant hot spot before being inerted with nitrogen and allowed to cool. Air was then allowed back into the coal after the nitrogen was turned off and a hot spot developed almost immediately at the same location as the original hot spot before it quickly migrated towards the air source within a day. Two more re-entries were simulated. Each successive re-entry developed a broader hot spot and took longer to reach thermal runaway. These results clearly show the behaviour that can be expected when trying to recover a section of an underground coal mine that has been sealed due to a spontaneous combustion event.

Many mining companies apply ergonomic principles, but it is done either informally and/or reactively. Examples of an informal approach include replacing worn equipment, such as seats, with models that have ergonomic features, or modifying tasks to eliminate safety hazards that will also reduce risk factor exposures that may result in musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). A reactive approach is followed when modifying a task/equipment after an MSD occurs. Neither one of these approaches involves a systematic method of proactively applying ergonomic principles to actually prevent injuries or illnesses. This paper will discuss how Vulcan Materials Company applied ergonomic principles and the interventions implemented to reduce risk factor exposures.

The 20th Century saw the modern mining industry enriched by one outstanding method of extracting of mineral resources called Borehole Mining (BHM). Mean while, despite its successful track record in wide ranging locales, few specialists are yet aware of this technology. The intent of this article is to introduce borehole mining to a wider spectrum of drilling and mining professionals. The BHM method is based on in-situ water jet cutting of rock mass. On Fig. 1 the schematic of the method is presented. The borehole mining tool 1 is lowered into the borehole 2 and high pressure water 3 is pumped down. At the bottom part of the tool, one portion of that water comes out through the hydromonitor nozzle 4 in a shape of water jet 5 and cuts the material 6 creating slurry 7. The other portion of high pressure water then comes to the hydroelevator 8 (jet pump, eductor) which produces a vacuum. When the slurry reaches this vacuum zone, the eductor sucks the slurry and pumps it up to the surface, where rock parts are separated from water in a tank 9 or a pond and clarified water is pumped down again closing the re-circulating BHM water supply system. The borehole mining tool is suspended on a drill rig tower 10 which allows the tool to rotate and move vertically along the borehole axis. While extracting rock mass, underground caverns (stopes) 11 are created. If necessary, compressed air 12 can be injected to the raising slurry flow to create an airlift effect. Also, a secondary agent 13 (such as oil, foam, etc.) can be added to the stope through the gap between the tool and the casing. As seen from the illustration, BHM is the remote mining method of extracting of mineral resources through boreholes by high pressure water jets.

Accurate estimation of equipment costs is a key factor in feasibility study and evaluation of design alternatives of mining projects. In this paper, capital and operation costs of backhoe loaders are estimated using multiple linear regression (MLR), based on principle component analysis (PCA). These cost functions are consisted of five independent variables; bucket size, digging depth, dump height, weight and horse power. The MLR is conducted in two steps. At the first correlation between independent variables is omitted using PCA technique. Thereafter, MLR functions are established using selected significant PCs and total cost functions are constituted as functions of initial variables. At the end, accuracy of functions are evaluated using mean absolute error rate method.

In 2004, the engineers at the Deer Creek Mine located near Huntington, Utah initiated the ventilation planning to exploit a remote area of the mine?s reserves. This area was located under a mountain which would not allow for the incorporation of an additional shaft or portal access near the proposed longwall panels. With this constraint along with the desire to maintain a two entry gate road system and the expected condition of frequent coal wash outs a ventilation plan was established. Different options were examined that included; increasing the current exhaust fan power, adding another exhaust fan installation, converting the ventilation fans in the active portion of the mine to a forcing system, and modifying the ventilation system in the active area of the mine to a push-pull system. The push-pull ventilation system was ultimately selected. This paper details the design process of the ventilation system upgrade, the procurement process for the new fans, and the new fan startup testing.

Introduction This paper attempts to summarize some of the major criticisms of drug testing. Eight problems with drug testing are discussed. These are: • It does not measure something employers have a reasonable need to know, • It is a distortion of priorities, • Drug use is not known to be associated with increased risk of occupational injuries, • Drug testing is proposed as a dangerously simplistic solution to poorly conceived problems, • In the absence of safeguards, it is unacceptably inaccurate, • In the absence of treatment commitments and confidentiality protection for persons dependent on drugs, it is an unethical practice of medicine, • Drug testing is an invasion of privacy, and • It will have a negative effect on treatment of persons with drug or alcohol dependencies. Employers' need to know It does not measure something employers have a reasonable need to know. It is reasonable for employers and fellow workers to want to know if workers are functionally impaired (intoxicated) while on the job. Drug testing does not measure impairment. It measures the concentration of drug metabolities in urine or blood. Unlike measurements of blood alcohol concentration (BAC), drug metabolites are not correlated with impairment or intoxication. They indicate only drug use in the one to two weeks before a urine sample. And, in some instances, they indicate chronic use. Impairment caused by drug use, on the other hand, occurs immediately and declines rapidly within hours. Drug metabolites may linger for days afterwards. Drug metabolite concentrations in urine are a function of (Morgan, 1984; Schartz and Hawks, 1985; MMWR, 1983): • the amount and purity of drug consumed before taking the test, • when the drug was consumed, • whether the person was a chronic user, in which case a certain amount of drug metabolites would be stored in body fat and slowly released, • the person's metabolic rate, and • for metabolites in urine, any dilution effects of urine. INTRODUCTION Soft, near normally consolidated clays generally provide ideal conditions for tunneling using Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) shields. It is easy to turn the clay into a low permeability, viscous spoil that can be pressurized to maintain the required face pres-sure. Despite this, there are records of relatively large, and often quite variable, surface settlements over EPB driven tunnels in soft clay. To understand this variation it is necessary to identify the various factors that contribute to settlement. Tunnels in soft clay are ideal for study these effects in the field, as an unsupported void will close almost immediately, due to the low shear strength of the soil. In the short term, deformation in a soft clay will occur at constant volume, so short term surface settlements can be related to movements at tunnel level. In this paper, data will be used from EPB driven tunnels in Singapore marine clay. In all of the cases discussed the lining consisted of precast concreted segmental rings erected in the tail of the shield. The marine clay in Singapore has been studied, among others, by Tanaka et al.(2001). The clay typically has a plasticity index of 40 to 60, and the undrained shear strength (SU ) can be derived from: SU = 0.22 svo' where svo' is the current vertical effective stress. Figure 1 shows a summary of undrained strength/depth plots used for design on two sections of Singapore’s North East Line. The stability of a tunnel in clay can be assessed by comparing the stability number (N) of the tunnel with the stability number at total collapse (NTC). The stability number can be calculated from the equation: N = (?Z + q – Pt)/SU where: ? = the average unit weight of the ground above the springline of the tunnel Z = the depth to the springline of the tunnel from the ground surface q = the surcharge Pt = the support pressure within the tunnel The stability number at total collapse depends on the size, geometry and depth of the tunnel, and typically ranges between 5 and 9. Charts for assessing the number at total collapse are provided in Kimura and Mair (1981), based on the testing of model tunnels in a geotechnical centrifuge. INTRODUCTION When divers discovered that sections of a tunnel housing the pipeline that conveys wastewater from the Charleston Peninsula to the Plum Island Wastewater Treatment Facility had caved in, the Charleston Commissioners of Public Works(CPW) moved quickly to determine a long term solution for the city’s collection system, immediately focusing on the Ashley River sewer tunnel along the western boundary of the peninsula. Working with the Charleston community, as well as federal, state, and local officials, CPW developed a fast track yet long life design that can be used as a model for underground construction of tunnels in urban areas. The paper that follows summarizes key aspects of the Ashley River sewer tunnel project. HISTORICAL CHARLESTON Charleston, South Carolina is a culturally significant and historic city that was originally settled in 1670. There are over 100 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places within the Charleston area. Additionally, the first shots of the American Civil War were fired at Fort Sumter in the Charleston Harbor in 1861. As one can imagine, tourism generates significant business for the area with over 1.5 million people visiting Charleston each year. No project, especially one that requires digging, is done within the old city on the Charleston peninsula without careful planning. Many precautions are necessary to prevent damage or disruption to the historical properties. The Ashley River sewer tunnel project is exclusively in the old city. A lot of work was done during the design phase to minimize the impact to historical properties. Some of this work included: an archeological study (where pre-digs were monitored at all shaft sites by an archeologist); a building/structure assessment study (where structures near a shaft site were completely surveyed and cataloged); and an environmental study.

Cortez Gold Mines is completing a Feasibility Study for a new open pit gold mine in north central NV. The production schedule calls for a peak in material movement. This schedule is based on current operational efficiencies and equipment parameters observed at the company’s existing open pit operation. To mitigate risks of over/under predicting production, simulation modeling was used to validate the loading and haulage requirements during the peak production period. The advantage of simulation is the ability to provide a realistic model of a mining operation based on scheduled, and unscheduled random events during the period under analysis.

"Collecting mineral resources from the seabed using a seafloor crawling robot is the firststep in the mining operation. The second-step is lifting the collected ore up to the water surface. For lifting through a riser pipe, prevention of pipe clogging (flow assurance) and economic and eco-friendly up-transferring is of the utmost concern.During collection of mineral ores, the production rate can be highly variable because of the variability in the distribution of the mineral deposit, variations in seafloor topography, fluctuations robot speed, and variations in performance of the mining robot, etc. Direct transfer of the collected ore to the riser pipe might cause unpredictable and serious problems such as over-loading of the lift pump, reduction in the life of the equipment, pipe clogging, severe increase of down-time, critical damage of equipment, further propagation of damages, and total failure after all.As a counter measure to these potential problems, a buffer station has been adopted, which is capable of storing the collected ore for a certain time and simultaneously regulating the transfer of the ore into the riser pipe. A pilot buffer has been developed by KRISO/KIOST (see Fig. 1)."

Weathered mine waste consists of oxidized primary minerals and chemically unstable secondary phases that can be sources of readily soluble metals and acid rock drainage. Elevated concentrations of metals such as Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn are observed in deionized water-based leachate solutions derived from complex sedex and Cu-Pb-Zn mine wastes. Leachate (USGS FLT) from the Elizabeth mine, a massive sulfide deposit, has a pH of 3.4 and high concentrations of Al (16700 ug/L), Cu (440 ug/L), and Zn (8620 ug/L). Leachate from the sedex Faro mine has a pH of 3.5 and high concentrations of Al (2040 ug/L), Cu (1930 ug/L), Pb (2080 ug/L), and Zn (52900 ug/L). In contrast, higher-pH leachates produced from tailings of polymetallic vein deposits have order of magnitude lower metal concentrations. These data indicate that highly soluble secondary mineral phases exist at the surface of waste material where the samples were collected. Sulfide minerals from all sites exhibit differential degrees of weathering, from dissolution etched grain rims, to rinds of secondary minerals, to skeletal remnants. These microscale mineral-dissolution textures enhance weathering and metal leachability of waste material. Besides the formation of secondary minerals, sulfide grains from dried tailings samples may be coated by amorphous Fe-Al-Si minerals that also adsorb metals such as Cu, Ni, and Zn.

In order to search for a more economical and effective roasting additive for extracting vanadium from stone coal and solve the question of the disposal of PVC waste, PVC waste was proposed as a novel roasting additive to enhance extraction of vanadium from stone coal and realize the comprehensive utilization of resources. By adding this roasting additive, the leaching rate of vanadium reached 94.5% under the conditions that the PVC waste addition was 10 wt%, the roasting temperature was 800 °C, the roasting time was 1 h, the sulfuric acid concentration was 15 vol%, the liquid-to-solid ratio was 1.5 cm3 /g, the leaching temperature was 95 °C, and leaching time was 4 h, which increased by 8.4% compared with that of blank roasting. The thermodynamics calculation showed that the decomposition reaction of mica was performed easier with the participation of HCl produced by pyrolysis of PVC. Meanwhile, The SEM-EDS and aperture test analyses demonstrated that more cracks and voids appeared in the roasted sample by roasting with PVC waste, which could facilitate the release and extraction of vanadium. Additionally, the TG-DSC analyses indicated that PVC could provide large amounts of heat for the roasting process to promote the decarbonization and roasting efficiency of stone coal because of its high calorific value.

Timber support of mine openings continues to be an effective system for ground support, due to its avail¬ability, flexibility, and ease of installation. Timber support of mine openings as a primary method to support loose rock has been replaced to a large extent by rockbolting and by filling systems. How¬ever, the many designs of square-set timber and varia¬tions of crib and stull support that have been developed to suit many stope configurations have proven reliable over many years of application. Integrated in modern excavation and stoping methods, timber remains an im¬portant ground support material for today's mines. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF TIMBER SYSTEMS Timber, when used as a part of the total support system, is recognized for its unique support properties. More than a cover to prevent minor falls of ground, timber systems have been carefully designed to provide adequate support with sufficient compressive qualities to achieve a safe working environment in extremely diffi¬cult ground conditions. In some cases, a timber support method is designed to yield while retaining its protec¬tive support qualities. Little or no initial investment in equipment or plant is required for incorporating timber into the mining support system. Low cost cutoff saws and portable chain saws are sufficient equipment for effective use of dimen¬sioned (sawed) or round (stull) timber support. Until recently, small sawmills of various complexity were com¬mon at mine surface plants. Sawmills at the mine sites have generally been replaced by timber vendors' mills. Suppliers have been able to use efficient cutting and lumber handling methods to reduce the cost of mine timbers. Most suppliers will package dimensioned mine timber into bundles that are suitable for handling down mine shafts and on level conveyances. The principal disadvantage of timber as a support method is higher material cost and labor cost associated with its labor-intensive installation. Furthermore, stand¬ing timber reserves of mine quality wood are in short supply in some areas, and heavy competition exists for alternative uses of the timber supplies. Vendors are reluctant to supply large cross section dimension tim¬bers relatively free of defects. Some mine operations require 4.8-m (16-ft) lengths of firm timber over 0.09 m2 (144 sq in.) in section and these are difficult to obtain in large quantities. APPLICATION OF TIMBER FOR MINE SUPPORTS Timber used in mine support has been cut from many species of trees. A firm hardwood with physical properties similar to western Douglas fir has been pre¬ferred in the US. Other harder and softer woods, how¬ever, have been used when readily available or where the specific strength or crushing quality of the wood is a desired specification of the support system design. Hard¬ wood, commonly oak, has been used where maximum crushing resistance is required. Mahogany and fir are widely used for shaft guide timber. Normally, timber is used with its core axis parallel to the long axis of the timber dimension. However, in some cases, it is placed normal to its core in a "butt" log position, so as to provide maximum resistance to abrasion of the ore passage adjacent to the cut end of the block. By selective placement of timber block¬ing, controlled resistance to ground closure can be achieved which will prevent early failure of primary sup¬port members of the timber structure. Timber is widely used in modern mining operations as a construction member for chute-lip support. These designs are tailored to each operation to conform to the dimensions of the haulage equipment being used. As a construction material, wood requires none of the spe¬cial equipment necessary for placement of concrete or steel support. Placement of these alternate support ma¬terials requires carefully dimensioned and engineered excavation for their installation. Wood can be easily sawed to fit on location. The successful use of timber in heavy ground de¬pends on the careful and accurate placement of block¬ing and bracing to achieve the controlled yielding re¬sistance needed to support the mine opening. Similarly, frequency, size, and placement of top and bottom block¬ing stulls in flat-bedded deposits are carefully determined to provide adequate support at the mining face. Con¬trolled caving through failure of the stulls may be required as the scope retreats from the earlier mined-out sections. The support program must achieve both of these dimensionless qualities by specification of stull frequency and size. The utility of the square set-system of ground sup¬port and timber support is described in Chap. 2, re¬printed from US Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6691. Four examples of effective use of timber for support of stoping and other mine openings are pre¬sented in other chapters in this section. The Gilman mine's use of Mitchell slice stoping described in Chap. 3 is an early modification of the square-set mining system. This application proved reli¬able for heavy ground and overcame some of the dis¬advantages of conventional square-set timber. Chap. 4 describes the Burgin mine's use of timber with other reinforcement material. This combination of materials achieved high strength and control with yielding com¬ponent members necessary for heavy, squeezing ground. Chap. 5 describes the Bunker Hill mine's use of square¬set timber in a new configuration that provides an effi¬cient and safe support for stoping using small load¬haul-dump (LHD) mobile equipment. Diesel engine particulate matter pollution is a matter of concern currently in underground mines worldwide. A number of real-time Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) monitors have been developed in recent years; two of these by the National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) in the US. One, the D-PDM, is based on an adaption of the successful NIOSH?s Personal Dust Monitor (PDM) unit which is being taken up very successfully for mine respirable dust monitoring. The D-PDM measures all particulate matter within a sub-micron range as classified nominally at 0.8 micrometers by a purpose developed cyclone. The other, the FLIR Airtec, measures the Elemental Carbon (EC) component of DPM by a laser scattering approach. Both instruments have been evaluated underground in robustness and reliability testing in coal mines by the authors. Real time DPM monitors allow greater understanding of the sources and levels of DPM pollution in underground activities. They allow engineering evaluations to determine how conditions can be improved or mining personnel relocated to lower concentration levels. Studies are discussed that examine DPM concentrations from vehicles under varying ventilation conditions. Some of these concern tests undertaken during high activity longwall face moves. They focus on evaluating DPM during the various phases of the face Chock Shield moves. An initiative in some mines has been to limit the number of vehicles in the mining section or panel by the use of a Tag Board or Traffic Controller at the panel travel road entrance to manage exhaust DPM and gases. Diesel tags or tokens are used to control the number of vehicles entering a section or panel and so limit level of pollution. Summation of DPM levels from points monitored throughout a panel demonstrates increasing DPM levels from influence of additional equipment in series within the ventilation circuit. An alternative approach is to invest in underground continuous real-time monitoring of exhaust gases, DPM and section air quantity and integrate this information to determine whether an additional vehicle can enter without exceeding diesel target limit. This optimizes the access of diesel vehicles and replaces the existing manual tag board system. Real-time DPM monitoring allows the industry to pin-point high exposure zones such as those encountered where various vehicles work in areas of constrained or difficult ventilation. Identification of high DPM zones allows efficient modification of mine ventilation, operator positioning and other work practices to reduce underground miners? exposures.
