The design of the predriven recovery room is not an easy task, because the stress distribution in the barrier pillar, standing supports, fender pillar and the immediate roof is changing as the longwall face approaches the predriven recovery room. An analytical approach is proposed to determine the stress distribution in the barrier pillars, fender pillars, standing supports and immediate roof of the recovery room based on the fracture mechanics approach. Based on the developed mathematical model, a stand-alone computer program has been developed to facilitate the required computations. The parameters such as overburden depth, recovery room width, mining height, shield and standing support capacities are incorporated into this program to access the feasibilities of predriven recovery room designs. Compared to the finite element method previously employed, this analytical approach offers the same, if not better, accuracy without requiring expensive computer hardware and software or specialized expertise.

During the next 15 years, US coal production is expected to double, with the increased production evenly divided between the East and the West. Along with greater production, coal export markets should increase dramatically from East, West, and Gulf Coast ports. The annual overseas export capacity of US coal-loading terminals is expected to rise from 147.1 Mt (162.1 million st) in 1981 to a minimum of 278.1 Mt (306.6 million st) in 1985, according to the US Maritime Administration. Increased coal production and use will lead to more development of import and export terminals, a vital link in the coal transportation chain. With continually escalating capital costs and the competitive markets that the terminals will serve, a well designed and efficient terminal is necessary. This article begins a two-part series that presents concepts presently used in coal export terminal design. Part I looks at site selection factors and equipment needs, while Part II will examine environmental considerations in building a terminal as well as typical capital and operating costs. The world is nearing the end of the oil era. In a few years oil will not be available to sustain the growth rate and increasing standard of living we have known in our lifetime. The big question is what energy era are we moving into? With the decline of readily available oil reserves and rapidly increasing prices, many countries are trying to switch to alternate energy forms. While intensive efforts to find new oil reserves continue, alternate energy sources such as natural gas, coal, synthetic fuels, nuclear, hydroelectric, solar, and wind power are being developed. Recent indications are that coal is expected to bridge the energy gap over the next 25-30 years until the technology and economics of the alternate energy forms reach satisfactory levels. Use of coal for energy is receiving strong attention due to its long-term availability (200-300 years minimum), relative ease of development, and its low cost per unit of power produced. By the year 2000, it is expected that 25% of world energy supply will be met by direct coal combustion and possibly another 5-10% by synthetic fuel from coal. Coal's expanding share in the world energy market, along with an increase in coking coal requirements, will result in a large increase in the world's seaborne coal trade. Recent statistics and projections for the future are shown in Table 1. This phenomenal development rate includes increases in both coking and thermal coal requirements. Because of the rapid increase of seaborne coal trade during the last 10 years and the even greater projected increase of trade to 2000, various sectors of the coal industry are faced with enormous technical challenges and huge investments in equipment, land, transportation systems, and port facilities. Very large bulk terminals are under development throughout the world. Latest surveys indicate that there are about 30 new coal export and import terminals under consideration and at least 30 existing terminals have expansion programs planned or underway. With the high cost of borrowed capital and rapid inflation rates there is great emphasis on new planning and design techniques to minimize capital and operating costs of coal transportation systems. Terminals A total coal supply system can be considered to consist of one or more mines; a train, barge, truck, or other haulage system; an export terminal; a fleet of bulk carriers; a receiving terminal; and possibly, local inland distribution networks that include barges and railways. Terminals, though only a small link in the total transportation system, play a key role in overall system efficiency. At ports or inland distribution centers, terminals act as transportation links bringing trains, ships, barges, or trucks together for cargo transfer and temporary storage. A well-designed terminal can provide maximum independence between two modes of transportation and optimum freedom for intermodal interference. A terminal acts as a buffer between the two transportation modes by providing sufficient storage capacity so a ship need not wait for its cargo on, for example, a train-by-train basis, but can load immediately from the ready stock. Similarly, a train need not wait for a ship to unload its contents but can dump immediately into storage. The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, conducted field tests on acidic copper tailing as part of its program to devise, improve, and demonstrate technology for stabilizing mining and mineral processing wastes. Results will be presented from successful 1/8-acre and 1-1/2-acre demonstration revegetation plots established in 1973 and 1974 on an abandoned copper tailing pond located on public land adjacent to Holden Village, Wash. The tailing was neutralized with treatments of either dolomitic lime or limerock and fertilized with processed sewage sludge and/or commercial fertilizer. Plant growth covering 60 percent of the surface was achieved on both test plots. Regar brome, Tegmar intermediate wheatgrass, and tall wheatgrass provided the best plant growth and surface coverage. In neutralizing the tailing, the target pH of 6.8 was not achieved; however, good plant growth occurred in areas where the pH ranged from 2.9 to 5.8.

"Point cloud technology is now an indispensable tool in geological and geotechnical data collection, interpretation and analysis. Open-pit and underground mines of all sizes are regularly collecting point cloud data as laser scanning (LiDAR) and photogrammetry surveying devices have become affordable and the workflows fast and efficient. Past challenges of large data processing and manipulation are gone with recent technological advancements in computer hardware and software. These innovations reduce file sizes, ease rendering requirements and allow for the implementation of real-time 3D viewers and surface meshing tools. With its ability to remotely and safely, rapidly and accurately extract large quantities of georeferenced and 3D-oriented data, point cloud technology provides numerous applications to the geomechanical field. The list of uses is continuously growing. This article specifically focuses on digital outcrop modeling and digital terrain engineering. Point clouds. The high-resolution and increasing availability of point cloud technology is rapidly improving open-pit and underground mines’ investigation, interpretation and characterization of site geology and rock mass properties (Kemeny et al., 2015; Lyons-Baral, 2012). LiDAR and photogrammetry are common remote sensing methods employed to measure the coordinates of surfaces in three dimensions (3D), providing the X, Y and Z locations and typically the reflective intensity and/or the visible three-band color of each point (Fig. 1).LiDAR uses either a time-of-flight or phase-shift measurement of a laser beam reflected off targeted surfaces and received back into the device.Photogrammetry generates point clouds by merging multiple overlapping photographs and uses stereographic plotting to define the locations of object points in 3D space. These methods can be deployed from airplanes, unpiloted aerial systems (UAS or drones), tripods, land vehicles and even in a mobile backpack shown in Fig. 2. RADAR, Total Station-Prism and other remote sensing systems also offer very precise “point clouds,” but this article does not address these due to their higher cost and lower versatility and mobility."

"The U.S. Geological Survey and Natural Resources Canada conducted a study on the net import reliance of each North American country, and the impact of North American trade on the net import reliance of 12 nonfuel mineral commodities that are associated with advanced technology products: cadmium, cobalt, gallium, germanium, graphite, indium, lithium, nickel, rare earth elements, selenium, silver and tellurium. The combined results for North America, using 2014 data, showed greatly reduced net import reliance for nearly all of the commodities evaluated, which is largely the result of pooling the resources of production and recovery in Canada and Mexico of materials that are consumed in the United States. This study highlights the mitigation of potential supply risk for critical materials that results from trade within the North American trade bloc. IntroductionMultiple metrics and definitions exist for what constitutes a critical material, but there is broad acknowledgment that a mineral commodity may be considered critical if, among other factors, its production is geographically concentrated, if it has few or no substitutes, or if the country of origin is politically unstable. Numerous governmental and independent researchers have proposed methods of investigating criticality, with differing priorities such as economic resilience or strategic military supplies (European Commission, 2014; Graedel et al., 2015; U.S. National Science and Technology Council Subcommittee on Critical and Strategic Mineral Supply Chains, 2016). While criticality really depends on who is asking the question, and despite the differing priorities, there are several commodities that are commonly found to be of concern. In particular, some critical or potentially critical materials are used increasingly in advanced technologies, or they have complicated supply chains because they are coproduced or are produced in controlled markets.Commodities for which imports are required to satisfy domestic demand are those for which the importing country is net import reliant. An understanding of how health and safety management systems (HSMS) reduce worksite injuries, illnesses and fatalities may be gained in studying the behaviors of health and safety leaders. These leaders bear the accountability for identifying, understanding and managing the risks of a mining operation. More importantly, they have to transfer this knowledge of perception, recognition and response to risks in the mining environment to their workers. The leaders’ efforts to build and maintain a mining operation’s workforce that consistently executes safe work practices may be captured through more than just lagging indicators of health and safety performance. This exploratory study interviewed six leaders in occupations such as site-level safety supervisors, mine superintendents and/or general managers at surface and underground stone, sand and gravel and metal/nonmetal mine sites throughout the United States, with employee populations ranging from 40 to 175. In exploring leaders’ perspectives on how they systematically manage health and safety, examples such as approaches to task training, handling near-miss incidents, identifying future leaders and providing workers with feedback offer insights into how leaders translate their knowledge and management of site-level risks to others.

In the analysis of comminution processes, it is necessary to have a detailed knowledge of such sub-processes as: (i) The transportation of the particles to the zone where they are stressed, (ii) The stressing of the particles to a level high enough for breakage, (iii) The removal of the fragments that are smaller than the limit size from the grinding zone, and (iv) The prevention of agglomeration of the fine fragments. The breakage phenomena of particles is the most difficult sub-process to understand. It can be understood only by applying the principles of fracture physics to obtain information about the stress-strain field in particles which are loaded either by compression or by impact, and by using this theoretical knowledge to interpret experimental results obtained from single particle crushing studies. It is not only of academic interest to know how a particle breaks, but also it is important for practical applications because it provides a basis for evaluating both the direction and limitation for any potential comminution improvement.

In the hard-rock mining industry, the generation of fines during blasting is an important issue because it has a significant effect on production processes. Although various approaches have been used to estimate fines generation in recent decades, as a practical matter, measuring the amount of fines is nearly impossible given the technical limitations and the scale of mine blasts. In this study, a dynamic PPV damagemodel was developed and applied to predict fines generation as a result of blasting. This modified version of the crushed zone model (CZM) considers dynamic rock properties and peak particle velocity (PPV), which represents the induced stress in blasting. Dynamic rock-fracturing tests were conducted using a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) to determine the parameters that represent the relationships between rock strength and strain rate as well as the relationships between fines amount and strain rate in the model. A case study was conducted that entailed determining the radius of the crushed zone for given blast designs and rock properties and then measuring the fines amount within this crushed zone. This case study indicated that the dynamic PPV model can provide a rough estimate of fines generation for given dynamic rock properties and blast design parameters and that this method has the potential to be a useful indicator, or index, of fines generation.

The mechanisms involved in the adsorption of modified thiol-type collectors on sulfide minerals have been investigated in the present work. These collectors belong to the broad classes of thionocarbamates, thioureas, thiophosphates and thiophosphinates. They differ significantly from the traditionally used thiol-type collectors, such as xanthates and dithiophosphates, in terms of structural features that involve either the introduction of an additional oxygen donor or the alteration of electron densities on donor atoms. Electrochemical studies suggest that the adsorption of these classes of collectors is probably the result of a coupled reaction of the EC-type, involving an initial electron transfer step (E), followed immediately by a chemical reaction (C). Thus, the overall adsorption process is controlled by both the E, and pK of the system. The role of structural features in changing the interaction of the donor atoms with sulfide minerals is also discussed.

For efficient management of operations, mining companies are required to be able to predict potential scenarios for main market factors. Competitive advantage and value creation are established through managing the value chain well. The mining value chain is usually faced with challenges from various shifts in commodity markets as well as ongoing uncertainties. Therefore, there is a need for accurate analysis of data from the markets, for the prediction of commodities, for instance, Precious Group Metals (PGM). The main objective of this research work is to apply machine learning methodologies with the aim to identify patterns and trends in the Precious Group Metals, and thereafter analyze and predict the future trends of these markets. Numerous machine learning models are applied to a dataset consisting of 15 years of daily price for eight precious metals namely Platinum, Palladium, Rhodium, Ruthenium, Osmium, Indium, Silver, and Gold. The results reveal the patterns and trends within the data sets and that different machine learning methods could be suited for the prediction of market prices for each of the PGMs. The application of an amalgamation of various machine learning methods may result in more accurate predictions of the PGM markets. Accurate prediction of market prices for PGMs will possibly result in unlocking untapped sources of value in the mining industry.

A critical path approach is presented for the problem of mine ventilation net- works where regulators and fans are employed to control the airflow distribution which is preassigned. The problem is a classic one which arises in mine ventilation planning. By identifying the analogy between the network for controlled flow and that for CPPI, the applications of the well known CPM technique to the ventilation network problem become straight- forward. The mathematical formulation of the problem is presented and the solutions are illustrated with examples. The effect of booster fans on the total air power consumed in a ventilation network are also discussed.

The mobility of gold and silver metals from refractory ores is very low due to free metal ions in their bodies that bind the transportable and free metal molecules or they are encapsulated in minerals such as sulfides, arsenosulfides, carbonaceous, and clayey materials which make it difficult to extract them. As known from the literature, the enrichment of oxide refractory gold, silver ores, Ag, and Au-rich flotation concentrated from sulfur refractory ores can be leached in the chloride-hypochlorite solutions. In this work, the leaching approach was studied to extract silver ions from refractory ores in the presence of hypochlorite media under high pressure. The mineralogical and scanning electron microscopy analysis of the sample indicated that the silver was encapsulated in barite and quartz minerals in fine sizes. In order to obtain the optimum leaching conditions for the silver ore, the effects of several parameters, namely, temperature, leaching time, NaCl and NaOCl concentration, solid ratio, and particle size on the leaching recovery were investigated in detail. The leaching experiments showed that the highest silver recovery of 62.35% was obtained under the following conditions: temperature of 150 °C, oxygen pressure of 1800 kPa, leaching time of 2 h, concentrations of 2 mol/dm3 and 0.4 mol/dm3 for NaCl and NaOCl, respectively, the solid ratio of 30%, and particle size (d80) 15 μm. The results obtained from this study indicated that the enrichment of refractory silver ores to extract the silver encapsulated in barite and quartz minerals could be possible in the chlorite-hypochlorite under high pressure, a relatively shorter leaching time compared to conventional cyanide leaching.

INTRODUCTION Rapidly increasing capacities of equipment used to load and handle material at the face require improved haulage equipment and better methods of transporting the mined materials or "muck" to the shaft or slope and out of the mine to the processing plant on the surface. Increasingly, those transportation demands are being satisfied with underground belt conveyors. Such con¬veyors provide the most readily available, most efficient, and most reliable method of carrying materials in a continuous and rapid flow from the face loading equip¬ment to the surface plant. Almost universally, belt con¬veyors are used in coal mines and those nonmetallic and metallic mines operating in relatively flat bedded deposits. Belt conveyors are available in a wide range of capacities, mainly limited by belt width, belt speed, and weight of the material to be transported. They can be used on the level, on grades, on the surface, or under¬ground. They provide a rapid and constant flow of material, transporting the material as quickly as it is mined. Length of belt conveyors is almost unlimited. Where the haulage distance exceeds the practical capacity of a single conveyor unit, two or more conveyors can be used in series. Single conveyors more than 1.6 km (1.0 mile) long are common; multiple-unit conveyors in series operation are transporting materials over distances exceeding 16.1 km (10 miles). Depending upon mate¬rials being transported, job conditions, cost of the terrain being spanned, and alternative haulage methods avail¬able, conveyors can be conceivably economical for even greater distances. Table 1 lists maximum belt speeds recommended for most materials, relating belt speeds to belt widths. Table 2 lists capacities of typical conveyors of various widths and speeds, transporting commonly mined mate¬rials of various weights. ADVANTAGES OF CONVEYOR SYSTEMS For several years after their initial introduction, belt conveyors were available only with rigid side frames or a supporting structure of steel and concrete. That con¬struction limited underground applications, due to the cost and relative inconvenience of extending or retract¬ing the belt conveyor in the confined underground environment. However, during the last 20 years, wire-¬rope side-frame belt conveyors, as shown in Fig. 1, have become widely used in underground applications. Even wider use can be anticipated with their application to the fast movement of materials in surface mining operations. Advantages of the wire-rope side-frame belt con¬veyors were realized first in panel or section belt haulage in coal mines. Soon afterward, use of those conveyors was extended to gathering and main-line haulage. The mobility of the wire-rope side-frame conveyor is the principal reason for its success. The conveyor can be extended, retracted, dismantled, moved, and reassembled easily, even in relatively confined under¬ground spaces. The intermediate structure consists of rope support stands, wire-rope side frames, wire-rope tie-off stands, and the necessary carrying idlers and return idlers. An important and very attractive feature is the ability to suspend the conveyor from the roof in an underground mine, as shown in Fig. 2, leaving more room for improved housekeeping and allowing passage of face-service equipment, haulage vehicles, and other mining equipment. The conveyor's open construction allows quick and easy visual inspection of its com¬ponents for failures or malfunctions; it also facilitates checking and correcting conveyor-belt alignment. Other advantages contributing to the attractiveness and widespread application of wire-rope side-frame conveyors in main-line, slope, and surface installations include: lower capital costs, lower installation costs, lower maintenance costs, reduced impact on idlers and belting, reduced spillage and minimal cleanup, improved conformation to undulating terrain or mine bottoms, and the ability to span most obstacles without heavy structural support. CONVEYOR CLASSIFICATIONS Underground belt conveyors are classified normally according to their function. Generally, conveyors are classified into one of four main categories: 1) Panel or section conveyors normally receive the material to be transported directly from the face-haulage equipment. 2) Gathering conveyors are secondary haulage units that usually receive material from two or more panel conveyors. 3) Main-line conveyors transport all the material mined in the underground operations to the slope or shaft. Normally, they receive the material from two or more gathering conveyors. 4) Slope conveyors generally operate in tandem with the main-line conveyor, providing continuous Table 1. The evolution of Inco's Selective Reduction Smelting Process as practised today is described, beginning with the initial laboratory experiments on small samples to the processing of large bulk samples through pilot plant equipment. For both the Guatemalan and Indonesian (Soroako) ores, the initial screening tests using hydro-, vapo-, and pyro-metallurgical processes showed that the latter was the most promising both metallurgically and economically. Later, larger scale tests confirmed the earlier testwork.

"The City of Ottawa’s Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel consists of two interconnected tunnels totaling 6.2 km with a diameter of 3m including access shafts and hydraulic structures which connect to the City’s most critical sewers. This tunnel will be built 15m to 30m below ground in the downtown core adjacent to, and crossing below, the Light Rail Tunnel, which introduces additional considerations in terms of sequencing and risk mitigation. The City embarked on a unique Procurement Process to address the risks involved with a large tunnel project and those associated with tunneling below downtown, underneath and adjacent to UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and connecting to live critical sewers. This paper describes the unique procurement approach employed and the contractual risk mitigation measures developed to provide the best value while minimizing risk. Specific features include Market Sounding, using a Fairness Commissioner, Contractor Prequalification and Risk Mitigation Measures in the Tender documents. INTRODUCTION This paper describes how the City of Ottawa (the City) and the project design team developed a strategic Procurement Process and Tender that incorporated industry best practices for technical and contractual risk management for the Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel (CSST) project. The process was unique in that, while it employed a systematic review of project risks, it also solicited input from industry, stakeholders and provincial and federal partners to develop the request for Tender for this traditional design-bid-build project. Key drivers for this approach were initiated from the City’s concerns for cost control, cost certainty and overall project risk mitigation. To address these concerns, the City implemented the risk review and mitigation process right from the project design team selection. It was critical that the project design team embraced this risk management philosophy and carried it through each phase of the project. This paper serves as an excellent resource for municipalities or other owners embarking on a similar tunnel project, on how to properly apply industry best practices and the benefits of using them."

"Most of the gold produced worldwide is still obtained by cyanidation, in spite of the difficulties encountered in the processing of some gold ores such as the dissolution of copper-bearing minerals in cyanide solutions. The leached copper forms complexes with cyanide and causes several operating problems, which have led to the development of copper removal/recovery processes, among them the industrially accepted SART process (sulfidization, acidification, recycling and thickening). Although the SART process is in use in gold production plants around the world, new challenges are appearing with the continuous varying of the mineralogy of ores (such as higher copper grades, changing the solution composition and complexity). The optimal SART operating conditions for a specific solution are not the same when the composition of the solution changes; consequently, the efficiency of this process can decrease.The present study is a thermodynamic approach, corroborated by laboratory experiments, to explain how the main variables of the process affect the efficiency of copper precipitation as cuprous sulfide (Cu2S). The variables considered were pH value, copper concentration, cyanide/copper molar ratio and sulfur/copper molar ratio, all of which werevaried within the limits encountered in typical cyanidation solutions presenting the problem of copper.It was found that the variable that most affects the efficiency of the process was the pH value, since poor or no control of it can cause cuprous sulfide redissolution. The S/Cu molar ratio is also important: raising this ratio increases copper removal, but high ratios will also cause sulfide and cyanide losses. The effect of changing the CN/Cu molar ratio was negligible between 4 and 8. This complex can be retrieved from the solution by adsorption on activated carbon or by zinc precipitation. Although the use of cyanide represents an issue to health and the environment, there are technologies for its management and treatment that can be easily applied.
