In the exploitation of porphyry-type deposits, the quality of the ore is mostly defined according to its grade. Besides the simplest distinction, ore-waste, several grade categories may exist and they correspond to the different ways in which the ore is further processed. At the time of mining the selection of the different categories is done from extensive information available from blast holes. But planning has to be done before this information is available and it is necessary for the geologist to forecast, from exploration and development data alone, the possible outcome of the selection done later on a block, a level, or the whole deposit and ultimately predict the ore reserves and value of the deposit. A good statement of this problem has been presented at the 1976 AIME annual meeting by Williamson and Hueller (1976). They have shown that, if the cut-off values are directly applied to the estimated grade of blocks, a gross overestimation of the recovered tonnage of ore (14%) will occur. This problem, now termed "the vanishing tons problem" (DaVid, 1977) seems to be common in many open-pit operations and it has been explained several times (DaVid, 1972; Huijbregts, 1975). In order to solve it l.Jilliamson and Mueller proposed a solution based on compiling masses and masses of blast hole data available from mined-out portions of the deposit. They derived empirical correction factors which provide for every block, given its estimated grade, the expected tonnage and average -grade of each category of material within that block. The purpose of our work is to repeat the same exercise but ignoring the blast holes data i.e. we want to derive the correction factors from the only DOH data. Doing this, we are more in the real conditions where the valuation of the mine and are reserve analysis has to be made before production actually starts. Gold Fields Operating Co.-Chimney Creek has conducted numerous ore reserve modeling studies In order to optimize the estimates of the gold grades and tonnage distributions. Improved models continue to be produced for the major pits which Increase confidence levels required by Gold Fields management and provide the basis for more accurate long and intermediate term mine planning. Various kriging and non-kriging estimation techniques are used at Gold Fields -Chimney Creek Mine. This paper reviews the modeling histories and, current procedures used to construct these models with particular emphasis on the North Pit deposit.

"The use of recycled water in flotation has significant effects on flotation and selectivity because the recycled water contains many dissolved compounds and ions that alter the chemistry of the system. In this study, the effects of calcium, magnesium and sulfate, which are abundant components in recycled water, were investigated on galena, sphalerite and pyrite flotation using pure minerals and a complex sulfide ore by conducting bench-scale flotation, microflotation and zeta potential measurements. The bench-scale flotation tests indicated that higher recoveries of galena and sphalerite are obtained when water is recycled, due to higher concentrations of ions in recycled water. However, there was a critical ion concentration for galena recovery. The microflotation tests showed that galena recoveries at different pHs in recycled water are lower than in tap and distilled water. Pure sphalerite recoveries improved in recycled water in the bench-scale test with ore. Pure pyrite was depressed with recycled water as well. Zeta potentials became less negative with increased calcium and magnesium ion concentrations due to their adsorptions, and the presence of sulfate ions was seen to increase the negative charges of sphalerite and pyrite, conversely for galena. IntroductionWater is among the most important elements for mining and mineral processing. The distance to water sources is one of the major factors for mine site selection. The mining and mineral processing sector needs and consumes large quantities of water. In Chile in 2014, the copper mining sector alone consumed 12.7 m3/s fresh water for 1.189 tons of ore processing, and recycled 74 percent of the consumed water (Chilean Copper Commission, 2015). A plant that does not reuse or recycle any water will require 1.9 to 3.0 m3 of water per ton of ore processed (Gunson et al., 2012). Many stages of mineral processing, such as grinding, gravity concentration, dense medium separation, wet magnetic separation, flotation and hydrometallurgical operations, use large volumes of water (Schumann, Levay and Ametov, 2009).In mineral processing plants, the process water is recycled from the tailings dams, thickener overflows, and dewatering and filtration units. Wet concentration processes can require large quantities of water. Flotation, the most common process, typically takes place at 25 to 35 percent solids by mass. Most flotation plants practice at least some water reuse and recycled. Modern mines and mineral processing operations generally aim for zero water release (Levay, Smart and Skinner, 2001). In most cases, water quality has been found to affect flotation performance, and this interaction remains under investigation."

Measurements of the electrophoretic mobility of bastnaesite in aqueous solutions of sodium nitrate reveal that the isoelectric point (iep) of this cerium fluocarbonate occurs at about pH 9.3. These results also indicate that the pH affects significantly the electrophoretic mobility of bastnaesite, which becomes more positive as the pH decreases and more negative as the pH increases from the iep. Computations of solid-solution equilibria for the bastnaesite-H2O system closed to the atmosphere as a function of pH indicate that cerium fluoride precipitates in acidic solutions, whereas cerium hydroxide precipitates in alkaline solutions. When the initial amount of bastnaesite is fixed at 0.05 wt.% (the solids concentration used for electrokinetic experiments), these computations reveal that bastnaesite is the only solid phase in the pH range from 5.75 to 8.55, it coexists with CeF3(s) between pH 5.22 and pH 5.74, and with Ce(OH)3(s) between pH 8.56 and pH 10.12. Cerium fluoride and cerium hydroxide are the only solid phase below pH 5.2 and above pH 10.2, respectively. According to these computations, the dissolution-precipitation processes that occur when bastnaesite is equilibrated in aqueous solutions at different pH values determine the solid phases present in the system. In turn, these processes must affect the electrokinetic potential at the solid-solution interface, and they must be considered for explaining electrokinetic measurements as a function of pH when bastnaesite is the original solid phase in aqueous suspensions.

The study aimed to evaluate the separation performance of a full-scale continuous centrifugal concentrator in the reconcentration of fine hematite from high-gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) concentrate in a tailings recovery plant, and to investigate the usefulness of the technology in industrial applications. The effect of changing the operating variables on concentrate grade and recovery was studied. The results indicate that among the variables considered in the study (water spray pressure, centrifugal acceleration, feed volume flow rate, feed percent solids and the reciprocation and spacing of water sprays), the change in centrifugal acceleration affects the recovery the most and continuous concentration can be achieved only when the water spray has a sufficient pressure. In addition, the reciprocation and spacing of the water sprays have a significant influence on the concentrate grade. Although performance of the full-scale concentrator is slightly inferior to pilot-scale trials, due to limitations in the scale-up design and the fluctuations of feed material characteristics, this concentrator provides a potential way to achieve continuous concentration and obtain a high-grade concentrate from tailings.

"In this paper, recent progress with respect to the flotation chemistry of soluble salt minerals is reviewed, and some of the more relevant issues including the hydration states of ions, the interfacial phenomena of salt surfaces and the flotation behavior of selected soluble salts are discussed. Due to the high solubility, the flotation of most soluble salts has to be carried out in their saturated brines. Anecdotal evidence has suggested that the hydration states of the ions have significant influence on the physicochemical properties of the solutions, the surface charge and wetting characteristics of the minerals, the collector adsorption states and, further, the flotation behavior of the soluble salts. In this regard, reviewing past research findings, efforts are made to establish a correlation between the ion hydration states with the flotation behavior of the soluble salts. Further, advances in understanding the significance of colloid adsorption involved in the soluble salt flotation process are addressed, and future research efforts to understand the soluble salt flotation chemistry are suggested.IntroductionSoluble salt minerals are essential raw materials for the production of a variety of commodities, fertilizers, potassium hydroxide, soda ash, magnesium compounds and other chemicals. These soluble mineral resources can be processed using flotation technology and, currently, more than 80% percent of the world’s potash is produced by the selective flotation of KCl crystals (sylvite) from other salt crystals, predominately NaCl (halite) and other more complex salts (Searls, 1990). Despite the successful application of flotation technology in the potash industry, the mechanisms for collector adsorption on soluble salts have not yet been fully understood and, therefore, have been of considerable interest to flotation researchers for many decades."

Sedimentation is used to clarify process effluents or to thicken process slurries. The sedimentation cycle of a suspension is presented as a settling curve. This curve is simply a plot of the height of the interface between the settled suspension and clear liquor versus time. Figure 1 shows a series of graduate cylinders which contain a suspension at various stages in its settling cycle. Cylinder 1 shows the suspension completely mixed at time zero. After a brief period of time (see cylinder 2), the suspension is observed to settle from its initial height Ho to height H1, leaving behind a volume of clear (or turbid) liquor, called the supernatant. The interface between the supernatant and suspension is termed the mud line. It is also possible to distinguish at the bottom of the cylinder a layer of sludge representing solids which have settled from the suspension. The interface between it and the suspension is called the sludge line. The sludge line moves upward in the cylinder.

From a mining point of view the Portland Cement Industry falls logically into the Industrial Minerals Division. Portland Cement manufacture requires four principal materials, lime, silica, alumina and iron. The usual source of lime is limestone. Silica sources include clay, shale, quartz, sandstone and sand. Alumina is usually provided by selecting a silica source with a suitable alumina content such as clay and shale. "Cement Rock" is occasionally found in which all four ingredients are found in natural combination or sufficiently close that only minor adjustments are required. In the absence of iron oxides a white cement can be produced. All raw materials used in Canada contain some iron and in most plants further minor quantities of iron are added to promote fluxing, hence the typical grey colour of Portland cement. The modern period in cement manufacturing started in 1824 when Joseph Aspdin of England patented a process for the manufacture of a modified hydraulic cement which he called "Portland Cement". Hydraulic cements are cements that harden under water. Although natural cements, made by calcining and grinding natural argillaceous limestone were produced in Canada as early as the 1830's, Portland cement was not produced in Canada until 1890, about 18 years after it was first made in the United States.

The energy situation the world faced during the decade of the Seventies resulted in actions throughout the free world to reduce its dependence on OPEC oil. Many nations heeded the indicators early in that decade and commenced efforts to reduce their oil requirements. Those nations which did not heed these warnings had the message brought to them more emphatically in the last portion of the decade with the further rapid and continuing rise in prices of OPEC oil. Furthermore, the demonstrated unstable nature of large oil-producing countries has made it clear to all free world nations that their energy demands of the future must be provided for by some more stable and assured supply. Now, early in the decade of the Eighties, we see the need for expanded use of coal as an energy supply to be essential. The result in 1980 and 1981 has been a great increase in demand for steam coal worldwide. In essence, a new business for the United States has developed in steam coal export. In the United States, the large growth in foreign demand for our steam coal is now well recognized and documented. A major impediment in meeting this growing demand became abundantly clear in 1980. This impediment is the congestion existing at U.S. coal export ports. With the recognition of this constraint, a plethora of activity has been observed in announcements for alleviating the problem by improving and expanding current export port facilities. In addition to improvement and expansion, an abundance of totally new facilities has been announced in an effort to find ways to meet this large demand in the new business of steam coal export. This is needed; and hopefully, many of these plans will be translated into action. While total implementation of all stated plans is not expected, much of the implementation depends upon large- scale dredging, large waterside ground storage sites, and improved handling equipments in the conventional type of export ports. The time and capital required for implementation is great, and environmental problems associated with dredging are substantial. Host significantly, and unfortunately, implementation that does include dredging our ports will still not permit use of the truly large colliers of 140,000 DWT and greater, which are evolving as the "state of the art" in long-distance sea transport.

INTRODUCTION How accurate are past and present employee radondaughter exposure records of underground uranium miners employed in the United States? This often-debated question is essential for future substantiation of safe exposure limits. An apparent discrepancy between company-reported exposures and Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) projected exposures was detected in 1977. For these reasons a need for an updated comparison of these exposure data was indicated. This paper gives some of the conclusions of the earlier study and compares more recent exposure records compiled by the Atomic Industrial Forum, Inc., with projected exposures based on sampling by Federal mine inspectors. EARLIER STUDY In its 1977 Annual Report (U.S. Department of the Interior, 1978), MSHA's predecessor, the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA), reported that there was "an apparent discrepancy between Federal inspection results and company records." Both company records and MESA's projections from samples taken during routine Federal inspections indicated reductions in the average exposure of underground uranium miners from 1975 to 1977, but the MESA projections were over 4 times higher than the company-reported averages. This apparent discrepancy however, was based on a comparison of exposure data reported for all U.S. underground uranium miners. This projection more closely represented the average exposure of U.S. underground uranium mine production workers who worked 1,500 hours or more during the year. Exposures of such workers are reported each year by the Atomic Industrial Forum, Inc. (AIF) in summaries of exposure data reported to the AIF by uranium mining companies throughout the United States. (The AIF exposure summary for 1979 appears as tables A-1 and A-2 in the appendix of this paper.) Assuming that the average exposure for each exposure range category is the midpoint of each exposure range category, table 1 compares the estimated average exposures for U.S. underground uranium mine production workers who worked underground 1,500 hours or more each year in 1975 through 1977 with the exposures projected by MESA for those years. Slade, 1977, explained some of the discrepancy between company records and MESA projections of miners' average radon-daughter exposures as follows: 1) Concentrations of radon daughters in some work areas can vary greatly during any one day. A variation from 0.3 WL to 17.0 WL has been measured in the same stope on the same day. 2) Seemingly simple abatement problems indicated by the regular Federal and State inspections were solved simply by manipulating the mine ventilation. 3) The methods used by mine operators to compute cumulative exposures were such that high radiation readings were seldom or never reflected in the records. For example, a work area sampled on Monday indicated a radon-daughter level equal to 0.2 WL and this was recorded. It was sampled again on Wednesday of the following week and the level was 2.2 WL. The miners were withdrawn or told to fix the ventilation, and when this was accomplished the area was sampled and found to be at 0.2 WL again. Although the miners could have been working in the higher concentration up to 6 days, this reading might never be reflected in their records. If it was recorded, only a fraction of the day on which it was discovered would be entered into the cumulative exposure calculation (time-weighted average). 4) Some of the mines visited used a mine average radiation concentration, and every employee working underground was given the same exposure per unit of time spent underground. As a result of the 1977 study, more stringent sampling and recordkeeping standards were proposed and public hearings held in 1977. The resulting new and revised health standards on radon-daughter sampling and exposure recordkeeping became effective August 30, 1979 (Mine Safety and Health Administration, 1979). Prior to these new regulations, radondaughter sampling requirements were on an "as often as necessary" basis (Code of Federal Regulations, 1978). The new regulations required practically all active work areas in underground mines to be sampled at least once every 2 weeks, with many areas requiring weekly sampling. Arch Mineral has developed several computer programs that aid the surface mine planning function. These programs are utilized to perform long term projections for various area or semi-area stripping operations. The program generated reports include yardage, tonnage, quality and ratio information for the user-specified time periods. The projections are used to anticipate the annual budget, to compare alternative mine plans and to analyze acquisition candidates. The programs are user friendly, fast and accurate. Geological Grid File Two data files must be set-up and used in conjunction with the mine planning programs. These are a geological data file and a general input file.

The current study investigates sericite clay as an alternative source of potash and alumina. The alumina and potash content in the sericite is approximately 35 and 10%, respectively, compared with 50–55% in bauxite ore. Muscovite and illite phases are stable, and direct leaching is found to be ineffective. Here, planetary ball milling was performed, which provided dissociation of stable phases to relatively reactive phases. The milling led to a five-fold increase in the surface area, resulting in enhanced leaching kinetics even at low acid concentration. The statistical design obtained optimal conditions of 8 h of milling followed by leaching in 1.73 M HCl at 75 °C, yielding 82% alumina extraction in precipitate with 85% purity in γ-alumina form and 63% potassium dissolution in sylvinite phase. The yield of the precipitate was ~65–68%, and the acid leach residue contained primarily silica.

In room and pillar mining a large number of working points are arranged to follow a mining pattern. Geological and roof control problems can be overcome or their effect minimized by varying this pattern. Longwall mining on the other hand, fixes the mining pattern for anyone panel. This aspect of longwall mining leads to constancy, so that a well-conceived organization, ventilation, dust and roof control systems lead to daily repetition and subsequent simplicity of control. All the same, a fixed mining pattern calls for a very careful consideration and selection of design parameters. (Ref. 1.)

Four different types of fire suppression systems were evaluated in large-scale fire experiments to study the effect of air velocity on their effectiveness in extinguishing conveyor belt fires. The four different types of suppression system were water sprinkler, deluge-type water spray and two different dry chemical fire suppression systems. The large-scale fire tests were conducted with 1.8-m- (72-in.)-wide fire-resistant rubber belt that met the Mine Safety and Health Administration flame resistant requirement specified in Title 30, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 18, section 18.65 (also known as the 2G Flame Test). Each fire suppression system was tested at air velocities of 152 - 168 m (500–550 ft) per minute (mpm) and 411 - 457 mpm (1,350 - 1,500 fpm). Two tests were conducted at both air velocities for each fire suppression system. Both of the water-based fire suppression systems were able to suppress the fire to the point that a miner could extinguish it with a fire extinguisher. However, the amount of water needed to suppress the fire to the point where a miner could walk up to and extinguish any smoldering belting was greater than the current MSHA regulations required. MSHA regulations only require 10 minutes of water supply for a suppression system. In the test setup, neither of these systems would have suppressed the fire had the water been turned off to the system after 10 minutes. The dry chemical suppression systems produced mixed results. Dry chemical suppression system A did not suppress the conveyor belt fire at either air velocity. Dry chemical system B suppressed the fire at 152 mpm (500 fpm) air velocity, but produced mixed results at the higher air velocity. Details are presented on the large-scale fire test setup, arrangement of the fire suppression systems and conclusions regarding the effect of air velocity on fire suppression system design and performance.

Natural sodium sulfate is obtained from both brines and solid deposits. The brines almost always contain other salts with sodium chloride predominating. They may be obtained from surface occurrences, such as Great Salt Lake or from shallow subterranean deposits. Althought many sodium sulfate minerals are known to exist, only three are of commercial significance. These are thenardite, the anhydrous salt; mirabilite, the decahydrate; and glauberite, the double salt of sodium and calcium sulfate. The reader is referred to Weisman (1983) for details on mineralogy and geology of sodium sulfate minerals. Sodium sulfate deposits, either in the form of brine or solid minerals, are found in many parts of the world. Natural sources, by far, provide the primary supply of commercial grades in Canada, Mexico, Spain, and probably in the U.S.S.R., Chile, Argentina, and Turkey. In the United States, production of natural material and synthetic (including by-product) are about equal in volume and have been for many years.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the Co and Mn resource of the West-Central Arkansas District, including field investigations, mineralogical characterization, beneficiation, and hydrometallurgical tests. The deposits occur within the Ouachita Mountains and are con-trolled structurally, occurring along the axes of anticlines making up the mountain ridges. Brecciated novaculite is cemented with a mixture of Mn oxides, primarily cryptomelane and psilome-lane. Cobalt is concentrated within a particular Mn oxide phase, lithiophorite. Chemical analyses on head samples reported up to 25 pct Mn and 0.17 pct Co. Magnetic separation yielded products with up to 41 pct Mn and 0.22 pct Co at recoveries of 95 pct Mn and 93 pct Co.

The objective of this study was to assess the health and environmental impacts of fluidized-bed combustion (FBC) of coal, specifically as applied to baseload generation of electrical energy by utilities. The study* was a short-term effort that based its analyses on information derived from the experience of the group or quickly obtained from the literature. The approach was to compare Atmospheric Fluidized-Bed Combustion (AFBC) and Pressurized Fluidized-Bed Combustion (PFBC) with two current technologies: low-sulfur coal combustion (LSC) and flue gas desulfurization (FGD) used with high-sulfur coals. A wet-limestone process was selected as the FGD technology. The impacts compared involved not only health and environment but also sociology, resource use, and dollar cost. Conditions for comparison were centered around a nominal date of 1988, when initial operation of commercial AFBC plants may occur. The PFBC has a later introductory date, a nominal 1995 (its impacts relative to other competitive technologies now in the R&D stages were not compared.)

This paper presents sulfur isotope data obtained for the deposits and country rocks of the Bailadores and Aroa Mining District, Venezuela. The study is a part of an extensive geochemical investigation of the mineralized belts that has as their aim the elucidation of the genesis of ores. The Bailadores deposits are located at about 600 Km. west-southwest of Caracas, or about 10 Km. southeast of the Town of Bailadores, Merida State (Fig. 1). The mine concession is held by the Ministry of Mines and Hydrocarbons (De Lima I, De Lima II and La Cascade areas). In a straight distance the mine is about 90 Km. southwest of Merida, the capital of Mérida State. From Mérida to Bailadores, through La Victoria and Tovar, it takes 3 hour by car. From Bailadores to the mine site it is about 40 minutes by jeep. The Aroa deposits are located at 4 Km. east of Aroa Village, Yaracuy State, about 220 Km. west of Caracas. It is 83 Km. from San Felipe, the capital of Yaracuy State to the mine (Fig.2). The mine is about 600 m above sea level, situated on the northern foot of the E-W trending Andes. The topography of the mine are shows a mature stage and is somewhat rugged. As the climate is warm and humid, the area is thicky covered with jungle.

Recently, liquid carbon dioxide (L-CO2) blasting technology has attracted attention due to its good fracturing effect and safety performance, especially in coal seam permeability improvement. This paper analyzes the blasting effect of L-CO2 based on experiments and studies the fracturing mechanism from the perspective of stress wave action via theoretical analysis and peridynamic simulations. The results indicate that L-CO2 blasting achieves a good fracturing effect without forming a crush zone, and the loading rate and strength of the stress wave are key factors.
