Mining activity in South America is a growing enterprise. One of difficulties found in many areas of the South American continent, especially in north Chile and south Peru, is the shortage of water supply. In order to overcome this difficulty some mining companies proposed to transport the water from Pacific Ocean up to the mountains. This can be accomplished by the use of stainless steel pipelines, but this is a cost prohibitive solution and is also subject to severe pitting corrosion in a saline environment. The use of mild steel may be a lower cost solution than stainless steel as the material of construction for pipelines but it is subject to corrosion anyway. The corrosion in this case can be internal or external corrosion although cathodic protection as well preventive maintenance usually is enough to mitigate external corrosion without the need to shut down the pipeline. The same is not true about the prevention of internal corrosion. It is not practical, sometimes not even possible, shutdown a pipeline to carry out an inspection and fix sections where potential failures are detected. It is possible avoid corrosion caused by sea water within the mild steel pipelines by applying a proper chemical program designed to virtually eliminate dissolved oxygen in the water commonly called deaeration.1 This type of treatment obviously involves additional capital investment since it requires the construction of one deaerator with the first pumping station and additional equipment at each point where the water can come into contact with oxygen. Deaerators will increase operational costs and subsequent injection of chemicals will be required in the case of multiple degasification facilities thus increasing the consumption of chemicals. grams based on oxygen scavengers, the objective of the present study is to develop a new water treatment capable of preventing mild steel corrosion in aerated sea water. Advances in the technology of abrasion resistant irons and steels, which could help in combating abrasion and wear in mining operations, are reviewed. Nodular irons alloyed with nickel or copper and molybdenum, with acicular, bainitic or bainitic-martensicic microstructures are described. These alloy irons combine excellent castability and relatively easy machinabilitv with good resistance to wear. Recent progress in the development of high chromium molybdenum alloy irons is outlined, by which high temperature heat treatment of massive castings can be eliminated, alloy costs can be reduced and cracking problems avoided. Data is also given on the erosion-corrosion resistance of these irons. Trends in the development of improved cast steels are outlined. Factors influencing the toughness and abrasion resistance of manganese steels are considered. The 6% Mn 1% Mo manganese steels are shown to have a useful combination of toughness and abrasion resistance. Composite castings are seen as a means of com- bating abrasion in applications involving severe impact. A brief appraisal is given of recently developed martensitic wrought steels with improved weldability.

Sixty years ago, underground coal mining was the most hazardous job in the United States. Roof falls were a big part of the problem. They killed about 100 miners every year, more than all other causes put together. Fast forward half a century to 2016, which is the first year ever with zero roof fall fatalities. Just three miners were killed by roof falls during the following 6 years. How was this historic goal achieved? This paper starts with a modern analysis of the causes of the roof fall fatalities in 1968. Then it follows the reductions over time by category, using snapshots of the fatalities occurring in subsequent decades. Along the way, it evaluates the influence of the regulatory environment, changing mining methods, and better ground control technology. The paper shows that in 1968, more than half of roof fall fatalities at large mines were attributable to an inadequate safety culture. The immediate effect of the 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act was to reduce the riskiest activities, like needlessly going under unsupported roof. Other hazards, like large roof falls, required technological developments before they were brought under control. Roof control plans, which the U.S. Bureau of Mines had been advocating since the 1920s, played a significant role throughout the process.

In the development of the ultimate pit limits for a narrow ore body, pa¬rameters necessary in the design of a functional, or working, pit become highly sensitive factors in the determination of ore reserve levels and their associated waste to ore stripping ratios. Through the use of geologic cross sections, ore reserves can be roughly calculated by utilizing a straight line approximation for pit wall slopes. The optimum position of the pit floor can be substantially altered from such a preliminary design though with the introduction of functional mining parameters, such as a ramping network, and working bench heights, berm widths, and bench to bench wall angles. Originally a computer program was developed to quickly evaluate changes in cross-section pit design with minimal alteration of input data. After developing a satisfactory technique of cross-section evaluation which incorporates working mine parameters, an optimization algorithm, or procedure, was developed and included in the program to eliminate much of the tedious manual decision-making required in determining the optimum location of the pit floor on each cross section. Optimization in this case implies the maximum profit pit. When pit and processing costs are defined or hypothesized, this computer program can be used to design the maximum profit pit, constrained by the recognized functional mining parameters. A second way of stating the optimization is that the program can be used to develop a pit design which minimizes waste stripping at any desired ore reserve level. The basic method of cross-section evaluation parallels present manual methods. Program input is a combination of data obtained directly from cross sections developed for, geological interpretation and pit design parameters selected by the mine planner. As a result it is easy for the mine planner to comprehend what the program is accomplishing, and thus participate in the development of the computer assisted design.

Reverse cationic flotation is the most widely utilized flotation method for concentrating iron ore. In this process, quartz is often floated with ether amines (R?(OCH2)3?NH2) partially neutralized with acetic acid. However, it is well known that the cationic flotation of quartz does not work well if a certain amount of slime is present in the ore slurry. To improve flotation performance, starch is often added to the flotation feed to selectively flocculate and depress the iron minerals and sodium silicate is used to disperse the silica gangue. The present study was conducted to improve the efficiency of iron ore flotation by the use of a new type of depressant for clay and iron minerals, Georgia Pacific (GP) clay binder. The GP clay binder minimizes slime adsorption on quartz and hematite particles by agglomerating clay particles to reduce their surface area. It also helps depress hematite flotation due to its unique chelating action on iron ions. The results from this study show that the GP clay binder is an effective depressant in iron ore flotation. When it was used as a substitute for corn starch, it increased concentrate grade from 60.78% to 67.67% and increased iron recovery from 71.96% to 72.90%. The combined use of GP clay binder with corn starch produced even better flotation performance, increasing iron recovery to 78.15%, while the concentrate grade remained stable at 67.08%. In the mining industry and particularly in the processing plants, we use some large and unusual equipment. Understanding what it is and what it does is important to good operations, but how do you teach a new employee. When I started out in this field, the information on the processing equipment was easy to come by. Equipment manufacturers readily supplied it; their salesmen, often engineers themselves, knew how important the availability of this information was. Old engineers used their notebooks to train the new engineers. Over time this has changed. Equipment manufacturers have changed hands or gone out of business, and often the older engineers are gone. As a start in reversing this, this presentation will be an introduction to sizing, selecting, and operation of some of this equipment, in particular gravity separating equipment. Major portions of this have been excerpted from A Mining Engineers Notebook: Mineral processing (2).

The impact of the computer revolution--so pervasive in some industries--has been less startling in the mining industry. Computer techniques have been used successfully to provide drill hole calculations, contour maps, and a variety of conventional maintenance scheduling, and accounting applications. But it is our experience that the real economic payoffs lie in the engineering application of computers to mine planning and the use of systems engineering techniques for mine operations. Since 1964, Newmont Mining Corporation has been engaged in systematic research and development of computer techniques in a variety of mine planning applications. The general objective in using computers has been twofold: first, to arrive at a viable, near-optimum plan for mining a particular orebody, and second, to decrease the financial investment by reducing the man-hours required for mine planning. Three major phases in the evolution of these computer techniques for mine planning are discernible. In phase one, the machine capability for duplicating manual drafting and contour mapping was developed. The necessity of including all recognized geologic characteristics is obvious. Capability for properly incorporating structure, stratigraphic trends, and other geological features was a significant aspect of phase one development.

This research sought to facilitate improved stakeholder analysis in mining by providing further insights into the preferences of local community members using discrete choice theory. While recent research has demonstrated the usefulness of discrete choice theory in mining stakeholder analysis, no previous work has examined which discrete choice model (DCM) is most suitable. This paper provides a research note on a case study in a mining community that was performed to compare three DCMs. After a thorough examination of the benefits and deficiencies of all models, this study concludes that the conditional logit model stratified by questions is the most useful DCM for mining stakeholder analysis. The recommendation is based on the usefulness and accuracy (ability to match the survey data) of this model.

There is no doubt that the dominant future source of gold will be the so-called refractory ores, especially those with gold in a pyrite/arsenopyrite matrix. Minproc Engineers is taking an active role in establishing detailed design criteria for a number of apparently competing processes. This involves generating a detailed understanding of the metallurgy involved, systematic pilot plant testing, and the application of advanced engineering technologies. This presentation outlines the approach adopted by Minproc as well as the design criteria for several current projects.

This paper describes a commercial installation of a sophisticated instrumentation and control system designed to maximize the performance of heavy medium cyclones. Samples of plant feed and its products were collected and analyzed for ash content so that measures of efficiency could be determined for plant operation under (1) manual control and (2) automatic (computer) control. The heavy medium cyclone control strategy and its digital computer implementation are discussed in detail. The sample results are analyzed and the economic benefits of automatic control are discussed. Results from the initial data sets quantify the economic benefits of automatic closed-loop control; viz, increased recovery and reduced clean coal variability have been clearly demonstrated.

The Natural Gas Act, of 1938, which put interstate pipelines under the jurisdiction of the Federal Power Commission, did not place a protective competitive shield around such companies - nor does any provision of the act guarantee them a profit. Natural-gas pipelines are competitive with each other and also with the coal and oil industries. Gas distributing companies must compete not only with the coal and oil industries, but also with the electric industry. Natural gas has captured markets from oil, which had taken them from coal. Oil men contend that gas prices have: been, held to an artifically low level by regulation. The electric industry is moving into the space-heating market, which pleases the coal people because the coal industry's largest customer since losing the railroads to dieselization has been the electric companies. The coal industry is attempting to monopolize the industrial and electric generating market through government intervention, and this is being done under the guise of concern for the national welfare through advocation of a "National Fuels Policy purporting to, further the cause of fuel conservation. Such a policy is contrary to American principles and would result in the individual's loss of freedom of choice and ultimately, in less reserves of preferred fuels because of diminished exploration efforts.

Throughout all segments of the United States mining industry, 163 independent contractor employees were fatally injured between 1990 and 1997. Factors that contributed to these injuries were identified after reviewing descriptive information contained in Mine Safety and Health Administration fatality reports for each of the incidents. Thirty-three unique contributing factors were identified and multiple factors were noted for each fatality. Those most frequently discerned were "failure to follow `standard operating procedures"', (35% of the fatalities), "poor positioning of employee" (26% of the fatalities) and "failure to maintain equipment" (23% of the fatalities). Contributing factors were then associated with the accident and job classifications of the victims. Factors having the highest frequencies in the top five accident classifications where most fatalities occurred were as follows: powered haulage - "failure to maintain equipment"; machinery - "poor positioning of employee"; slip/fall of person - "inadequate fall protection" and "failure to wear safety line"; electrical - "equipment contact with power line"; and falling/rolling/sliding rock - "poor positioning of employee. " Among the job classifications in which most fatalities occurred, leading contributing factors were as follows: truck driver - "failure to follow standard operating procedures" and "poor positioning of employee"; laborer/utility man/pumper - "poor positioning of employee"; mechanic/ repairman and welder - "failure to follow standard operating procedures." Recommendations for utilizing contributing factor information as a basis for safety training are proposed. Training programs may be developed that inform independent contractor employees of factors which, in the past, have contributed to fatal injuries in their job classifications. Then, by combining this information with contributing factors identified in "related" accident classifications, a truly focused training intervention that addresses very specific workplace hazards may he developed.

The model originally proposed by Austin, et al., has been modified in the light of further investigation of the breakage laws in SAG milling. The model uses a fully-mixed reactor for short L/D mills and calculates the breakage of small particles by the nipping action of balls and pebbles. The autogenous self-breakage of larger lumps is treated as an effective means of fast breaking rock and much slower breaking rock. Experiments show that fast autogenous breakage can be treated as a first-order breakage with an overall specific breakage rate which incorporates fracture and chipping. Similarly, slow breakage incorporates fracture and abrasion. Autogenous breakage is cushioned by the accumulation of fine material. Simulation results are compared to results from tests in a 2 m diameter continuous pilot-scale SAG mill. Future work is discussed.

During recent years there has been a great deal of confusion in the North American mining industry with the introduction of new comminution terminology and claims (without substantiative evidence), for various types of equipment in this field. The authors will attempt to clarify the terminology used, and where possible, give illustrations of plant practice with actual operational and pilot plant data. This is considered necessary in order to obtain a clear picture of the comparison of such equipment to the revolutionary change that the Aerofall Mill has brought to the mining industry.

In 1971, the Minerals Division of The Superior Oil Company acquired exploration rights to an unpatented claim group in the Superior (Pioneer), Arizona mining district, lying west of the Concentrator fault. This major post-mineral fault displaces the Magma vein-fault, which is mined in the Magma Mine at Superior, Arizona. The Magma vein-fault and the enclosing section of pre-mineral rocks consisting of Paleozoic and younger Precambrian sediments and diabase, is overlain by a thick section of post-mineral rocks, consisting of the Gila conglomerate, the Apache Leap dacite, and the Whitetail conglomerate. Geologic information on the thickness and attitudes of the rocks obtained from previous diamond drilling indicated that the section of post-mineral rocks might be from 3,000 to over 4,010 feet thick in the target area. (Figure 1) The Magma vein-fault is a steeply dipping vein which has produced nearly a billion dollars of copper, zinc, silver, and gold. It has been mined continuously for nearly 10,000 feet along the strike and nearly 5,000, feet vertically down the dip. It ranges from less than a foot to over 50 feet wide and contains sulfide mineralization con¬sisting of pyrite, chalcopyrite, bornite, and chalcocite.

A small scale continuous flotation cell was designed and constructed at Noranda Technology Centre to develop a mobile testing flotation circuit located next to the production circuit. This mobile small scale flotation pilot plant can easily and economically be set up at any circuit in a mill and used to evaluate and predict plant performance against a given flotation condition. The main feature of the cell, beside the provisions of automatic pulp level and feed rate control, is to provide a reduced surface to volume ratio approaching to that of an industrial machine. This paper describes the basic design and the results of various testwork carried out to date including aeration, conditioning, reagents, recirculation, flotation gas, etc. are presented in comparison with the plant production results.

In this study, the leaching rate of molybdenite concentrate was evaluated in sulfuric medium, and the influence of the diverse oxidants including hydrogen peroxide, manganese oxide, copper sulfate on the leaching rate was studied. Also, the effect of the addition of the ethylene glycol to the hydrogen peroxide was studied and results showed that with the addition of ethylene glycol, the leaching rate is increased 55% from 41% up to 80.3%. The optimum condition is achieved as 0.7 M of H2SO4, 4.4 M of H2O2, and 3.5 M of EG at 30 °C within 4 h of leaching time and 500 rpm. Also, inserting the oxygen with the pressure of 6 bar to the leaching autoclave, the leaching rate is increased more up to 86.4%. Finally, the leaching process was studied kinetically and the determined mode of controlling factor was specified based on the activation energy which equals 46.252 kJ/mole indicating the chemical reaction mode.

The limited lifespan, ever-growing demand, and significant lithium and cobalt content are responsible factors for the immediate recycling of discarded lithium-ion batteries. Discharged batteries were dismantled, segregated, and size reduced to recover cathode and anode material. The active cathode material comprises LiCoO2 (65.8%) and LiMn2O4 (34.2%) and was carbothermal reduced with recovered graphite in a microwave furnace followed by water leaching and magnetic separation. A Box Behnken statistical experimental design is used for process optimization. Both cobalt and manganese report to magnetic fraction, whereas graphite and lithium carbonate report to non-magnetic fraction and solution crystal respectively. The final product comprises of cobalt 73% and manganese of 14% with process yield of 36% and saturation magnetization of 76 emu/g.
