The main constituent of the feed to the "Sulphide Section" (31 t/h), in the F. Sartori Plant (6000 tid) of the Miniere di Mon)eponi(Sardinia), is the ore of the Campo Pisano -Funtanaperda Mine (1 ? Difficulties have always been experienced in the treatment of this ore, owing to the extramely fine Pyrite-Sphalerite intergrowth and to the high Pyrite and soluble salts contents. The first mentioned difficulty was overcome with a rather complex flowsheet (see fig.1A and lB)(2); the others with a reagent combination that required a pH of 11 in a pulp loaded with soluble salts. This meant high consumption of alkalizer, and also of the other reagents; furthermore the alkalizer had to be mainly NaOH with only minor amounts of lime, because the latter tended to depress not only the pyrite but also the middlings, which were supposed to float. With dialchylditiophosphate alone as a collector, a lower pH could have been used, but a certain amount of amylxanthate was indispensable to promote flotation of the middlings. On the other hand, a bulk-flotation of sphalerite and pyrite at low pH could not be very advantageous on account of the high pyrite content in the feed(3).

Using an approach based on the theory of similitude, the author develops a general equation and related concepts that provide new insights to an old problem. The load-bearing capacity (strength) of a square, rectangular, or cylindrical prism of a brittle material such as rock, coal, or concrete is expressed as the mathematical product of a size effect, a shape effect, and a function of the mechanical properties (deformability, cleat/joint spacing, and friction) of the pillar, roof and floor materials. Through an application of multivariate statistical analysis, the results of assorted tests and observations of failed pillars can be combined into a fundamental scaling equation, which provides a unified, consistent approach to the estimation of mine pillar strength. The form of the equation is sufficiently general to be able to incorporate refinements in the characterization of the basis factors, as they become available through future experimentation and analysis.

Passive treatment of mine drainage using constructed wetlands has been employed on coal and metal mine sites since about 1985. The technology has advanced significantly since then; there are currently over 600 of these systems treating coal mine drainage in the Eastern U.S. at flow rates of hundreds of liters per minute. Passive treatment performance at three metal mines discussed in this paper has been positive for a wide variety of flows, water chemistry, and climates. The sites include a high-altitude underground copper mine, acidic seepage from a gold heap leach pad, and pumped effluent from an active underground lead mine in Missouri.

Block cave mining method poses unique ventilation challenges compared to other underground metal mining methods. This research study focuses on assessing the airflow behavior in regulated airflow distribution systems by developing a 1:100 scaled block cave experimental model and a numerical model. This study also investigated gas flow behavior under various airflow conditions. Based on our findings, we observed that reduction in particle size and porosity of caved materials, decrease in cave footprint, and closure of undercut drifts would increase cave airflow resistance. The increased airflow is found beneficial for gas dilution regardless of its source locations, while the regulated airflow distribution system might deteriorate gas dilution situation when the source is located in the extraction drifts.

The Romanian mining industry, especially salt mining, is going through a restructuring phase taking into account the Environment Acquis of the European Union1. In order to preserve the centuries-old salt mines and to develop new ones, in the same salt rock deposit, the long term stability assessment of the saline complex is very important. This case study refers to the Praid salt mine, which includes old salt mines, with impressive sizes, located above the new mines, with activity in progress, in order to provide the means and solutions for efficient conservation and sustainable exploitation for the salt resources. The DKRControl method and FLAC 3D code were used in order to assess the confidence level for the computed prediction of the stability of the salt mine complex salt.

Boreholes are used for many purposes in mining operations, petroleum engineering, and construction works. Numerous factors affect the performance of drilling equipment. Researchers continue to work on the variable drilling parameters that can be adjusted in order to reach more efficient drilling operations. Penetration rate is an essential indicator in drillability analysis and estimating. This parameter is of great importance in mining projects. There are almost no models that can estimate the penetration rate for core drilling operations. Under the abovementioned circumstances, this paper focuses on developing models that allow estimating the penetration rate based on rock material properties. During the conduct of this study, drilling experiments under 11 different pressure forces were performed on 8 different rock units, and the equations which estimated the penetration rate depending on the physico-mechanical properties of the rock samples were derived. Experiments were carried out under different pressure forces to investigate the effect of the pressure force on the derived estimation models. The obtained results allowed deriving equations that ensured estimating the penetration rate based on the physico-mechanical properties of the rocks and the applied pressure force. Using these equations, the penetration rate in core drilling operations can be estimated.

The Phelps Dodge Corporation's Morenci Concentrator includes facilities for coarse crushing, fine crushing, grinding, flotation, tailing, disposal, concentrate filtering, and drying. The Morenci Concentrator daily throughput is in excess of 60, 000 tons. The ore milled is mainly a medium-hard monzonite porphyry in which the principal sulfide minerals are chalcocite and pyrite. The ore is transported by rail from the Open Pit Mine to the primary crushing plant located at the concentrator site. Ore is side-dumped from 80¬ton railroad cars into a sixty-inch gyratory crusher. The ore is then conveyed to a. 12, 000 ton coarse ore storage bin. Fine crushing is accomplished by four parallel lines of conventionally stacked crushers in open circuit. Each unit consists of one seven-foot standard cone followed by two seven-foot shortheads. Ti% product of the fine crushing plant is distributed by two tripper cars across a fine ore storage bin. The crushed ore is then fed by variable speed belt feeders into thirty parallel, single stage, closed circuit grinding units. Each of the 30 grinding units consists of one 6' x 23' conditioning drum, one 10' x 10' ha l mill and two 54" duplex spiral classifiers as principal equipment. The dry ore is fed into the conditioning drum with water to dilute the ore to a slurry of approximately 78% solids by weight. An aqueous solution of ammonium sulfide is also added to the conditioning drum. The ammonium sulfide primarily acts as a sulfidizing agent. The ore slurry containing the naturally occurring sulfide copper minerals and the sulfidized copper minerals discharges into the feed scoop box of the ball mill, where milk of lime, collector and-.dilution water are added. The ball mill product slurry is gravity fed: to the classifier pool where water is added to obtain the desired classifier overflow product

The unit-train concept of moving raw materials .is considered by many railroad men as the most signifigant contribution to reducing rail freight costs since the introduction of the diesel locomotive. The idea, which involves assigning railroad equipment to only one haul and keeping the equipment rolling results in the maximum utilization of equipment. For example before the unit train was plaged in servige on coal hauled to one of Mid. Continent's customers, about 900 cars and 9 locomotives were needed to move the coal requirements for this plant, compared with. 250 cars and 6 locomotives used by the present scheduling of unit trains. If the economics of unit-train movements are to be achieved, coal companies no longer can use railroad cars as small storage bins on wheels to accumulate their coal in trainload shipments, but, rather, must build large bins which incorporate facilities for the rapid loading of railroad cars in a minimum length of time. In this manner railroad equipment is operated at a high degree of efficiency 'with consequent dollar savings. After negotiations between Mid-Continent, the customers and the Railroad, it was decided a unit train loadout and storage facility at Carbondale was required in order to reduce the delivered price of coal to the customers and thereby contribute to the reduction in the cost of manufacturing steel. Carbondale was selected as the bin site location, because the cost of constructing a railroad to Redstone could not be justified for the tonnages anticipated.

The Bureau of Mines measured the geochemical changes as H2S04 was used for in situ uranium leaching by Rocky Mountain Energy Company near Casper, Wyoming. Cores and ground water were analyzed before leaching. Water samples were taken from observation wells located between injection and production wells as the leach solution was brought up to full strength in several steps. Measurements were made of pH, Eh, temperature, conductivity, total dissolved solids, dissolved oxygen, HC03, U, V, Na, K, Ca, Mg, SO4, C1, Mo, Mn, Fe, Al, Si, F, P, As, and Se. The data were gathered to assist in geochemical modeling of leaching and to study the potential environmental effects of acid leaching. Environmental considerations appear favorable. For example, the concentration of Se, a toxic element often found in uranium deposits, stayed below the EPA standard for drinking water.

The Purpose of the Paper It is fitting that the first paper of a session on the Financial Aspects of Mining should be on the basic data upon which any financial discussion of a mining project must be based. The history of a mining project starts with exploration in an area considered geologically favorable for mineralization and culminates in the discovery of a body of valuable mineral material commonly known as a mineral deposit. Subsequently more detailed exploration establishes the approximate size, shape, tonnage and average grade of the deposit by surface and/or underground drilling, -surface trenching and/or underground workings. Some preliminary metallurgical testing and other studies, as required, are made at this time. Development work is then carried out to provide representative samples for determining flowsheet and metallurgical balances, preparing the deposit for production and establishing more firmly the grade and mining characteristics of the deposit. A feasibility study is then made of the engineering aspects of the project including the estimation of operating coats, the capital required to place the deposit into production, profit and return on investment. The present study has been conducted in surface limestone mine to select the controllable blasting design parameters affecting the peak particle velocity (PPV) for assessment of ground vibration. The study aims at using two prominent statistical tools, namely, principal component analysis (PCA) and stepwise selection and elimination (SSE) techniques for identifying the key controllable parameters affecting the PPV. For determining the correlation coefficient between blasting design parameters and PPV from 44 field scale trial blasts, multi-variate linear regression (MLR) technique was done. It was found that the PCA and SSE eliminated a huge number of controllable parameters to identify the most important parameters, affecting the PPV. The PCA eliminated 6 number of parameters while SSE eliminated 5 number of parameters, and the coefficients of determination (R2) obtained were 0.616 and 0.584 for PCA and SSE respectively. The predictor equations were evolved, and these equations were used to validate the PPV results for another set of 21 field scale trial blasts. The predictor equations have been found to be fairly accurate in predicting the PPV values. Further, the PCA technique provides very near prediction of PPV with high degree of correlation in comparison to SSE technique. The paper highlights the role of state-of-art statistical tools in selecting the blasting design parameters affecting the PPV in field-scale blasting.

In 1976, a decision was made to install a conveying system to transport ore 10.3 km (6.4 miles) from the new Eisenhower Partnership Mine to Twin Buttes. The system, supplied and installed by Cable Belt Limited, of England, represents a radical departure from conventional conveyor systems. The driving tension is applied through two endless wire ropes while the belt acts only as the carrying medium. Features of the system are a single 2240 kw (3000 hp) drive and a 60° angle bend. Construction was completed in two years. Full production was attained after several months' operation.

Surface dependent processes, such as froth flotation and flocculation, are important or potentially important techniques for combating some of the current major problems in coal preparation. In order to correctly apply or imporve a surface dependent process, it is of paramount importance to understand the interfacial phenomenon, especially the double layer properties, exhibited by the solid. The specific objective of this research was to determine the properties of the bituminous coal/liquid interface by an electrokinetic method, streaming potential, and to relate the findings, wherever possible, to the existing unit operations of froth flotation and flocculation. The electrokinetic properties of both the whole coal and its lithotypes were investigated. As part of the total investigation, the role played in the double layer by the reagents commonly employed in the surface dependent process was also established (1). These data will be presented at a latter date.

The paper investigates the effects of calcination for thermal activation and intensive milling for mechanical activation on aluminum recovery by acid leaching of pyrophyllite ore enriched via attrition scrubbing and froth flotation. The study compares these methods in terms of energy consumption and aluminum recovery, concluding that mechanical activation is more economical and environmentally friendly.

"Foreword by Emily SarverAssistant professor, Mining and Minerals Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VAThe Mineral Processing Division hosted its fifth Student Poster Contest during the 2014 SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Salt Lake City, UT – and, by all accounts, it was a huge success! This year, the contest more than doubled in numbers of individual entries and schools represented. A total of 30 students participated, including 23 graduates and 7 undergraduates, representing 13 US and international institutions: Colorado School of Mines, Michigan Tech, Missouri University of Science and Technology, Montana Tech, New Mexico Tech, South Dakota School of Mines, University of Kentucky, University of Utah, Virginia Tech, West Virginia University, Autonomous University of Chihuahua (Mexico), UNAL Medellin (Colombia), University of British Columbia (Canada). In addition to constructing their posters, students submitted abstracts and gave short oral presentations highlighting their research. Based on tallied scores from all three components of the contest, the judging panel selected 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners at the undergraduate and graduate levels, which were announced during the MPD Luncheon on February 26.In the undergraduate division, University of Utah’s Lucas Pich was awarded the 1st place prize for his poster “Solid-liquid mixing studies in lab-scale flotation tank using electrical resistance tomography.” His extended abstract is included in this issue of Minerals & Metallurgical Processing. Joshua Chidester, also of Utah, won 2nd place for his poster presenting “Evaluation of detectors for radiotracer RTD measurement by MCNP.” And Lucas Rojas-Mendoza, of UNAL Medellin, took 3rd place for his poster on “Preg-robbing in Colombian gold ores.”In the graduate division, 1st place went to Caelen Anderson, of the Colorado School of Mines, who also placed in this contest in 2012 and 2013! The 2nd and 3rd place prizes were awarded to Jacob McDonald and Joseph Halt, respectively, both of Michigan Tech. Extended abstracts describing the work of these up-and-coming researchers are also included in this issue.The 2014 Contest was chaired by Emily Sarver (Virginia Tech) and Lisa Schlink (Freeport-McMoran Copper and Gold, Inc.). An effective technique to minimize miners? respirable dust and diesel exposure on mobile mining equipment is to place mine operators in enclosed cabs with designed filtration and pressurization systems. Many factors affect the performance of these enclosed cab systems, and one of the most significant factors is the effectiveness of the filtration system. High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA)-type filters are typically used because they are highly efficient at capturing all types and sizes of particles, including those in the submicron range such as diesel particulate matter (DPM). However, in laboratory tests, minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) 16 filters have proven to be highly efficient for capturing DPM and respirable dust. Also, MERV 16 filters can be less restrictive to cab airflow and less expensive than HEPA filters. To verify their effectiveness in the field, MERV 16 filters were used in the enclosed cab filtration system on a face drill and roof bolting mining machine and tested at an underground limestone mine. Test results showed that DPM and respirable dust concentrations were reduced by more than 90% when the cabs were properly sealed. However, when the cab door was opened periodically throughout the shift, the reduction efficiency of the MERV 16 filters was reduced to 80% on average.

Abstract. The commercial importance of hydroxyoximes as extractants for copper has given impetus to basic studies on the chemistry of metal extraction by these compounds. The discovery of accelerator compounds which produce catalytic effects on hydroxyoxime extraction rates has led to mechanistic studies of these rate processes. While these studies have highlighted the importance of interfacial chemical reactions in the extraction process, it is not yet possible to unambiguously describe the mechanisms of metal extraction in these systems or the associated catalytic effects. This paper reviews progress in understanding the mechanism of metal extraction by hydroxyoximes.

People are our most valuable resource. It is as true today as any point in mining history as we face unprecedented personnel shortages aggravated by a workforce that is aging, significant generational gaps and difficulties recruiting younger professionals all amidst increasing global mineral demand. The educational system has a similar, but slightly contrary problem. Many historically strong mining engineering programs have died. Now, fewer mining oriented universities are trying to produce more students in order to meet the demand. Moreover, their situation is aggravated by a similarly aging workforce, a general lack of mid-career PhD?s with the interest and field experience to teach effectively, an extremely slow hiring and funding process, and an inability to be competitive against private industry compensation packages. The traditional instructional model, while not necessarily broken, is most certainly dated, and can penalize programs and students where schools do not have in-house expertise in a given topic. Mining companies, like Rio Tinto, have the opportunity, if not necessarily the obligation, to positively influence how this model works. Educational Partnerships may be the key. This paper will address some observations, and possibilities, associated with Rio Tinto?s efforts in this area.

Coal refuse slurry impoundments are dams constructed of coarse coal refuse to impound fine refuse (slurry) and water (25-30% solids). Both products are waste from coal preparation plants. A number of these structures in West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Kentucky were investigated to determine embankment stability. During the investigation a variety of embankment designs were encountered. The investigation determined the soil and geological characteristics of the embankments and the sites. This was accomplished by a test drilling and monitor installation (observation wells and piezometers) program, geologic study, and large scale mapping which allowed sub-surface profiles of the embankments to be constructed. The laboratory testing program concentrated on textural classification of the coal refuse, permeability and determining strength parameters to be utilized in the stability analyses. For the stability analyses, the Modified Fellinius Slip Circle, Simplified Bishop Slip Circle and Analysis for Translational Failure -were utilized. In all stability analyses hydrostatic pressure and earthquake were considered. This investigation indicated that 62% of the embankments analyzed are in a stable condition. The coal seam mined, the type of roof rock, and the gradation of the refuse influence the degree of compaction obtainable and the permeability of refuse. The shear strength of coal refuse appears to be controlled by its composition, moisture content, degree of compaction, amount and grain size of fines present. This investigation demonstrated these em¬bankments should not be treated as pure state-of-the-art dams; consideration must be given to the particular properties of coal refuse and the total refuse disposal system. Refuse dim slurry impoundments generally lack the site se- lection phase that is standard practice with siting most other types of dams.
