"What will the mine of the future look like? Will it resemble the current operations that supply the world with the products it needs to function, or will it be something totally different? How will the demands from the communities that are most affected by mining operations shape the mine of the future? How will technology and innovation be used to help miners reach deposits that are getting harder to access, and what are the dangers of this new world? Who will work at the mine of the future, and what will that work look like?These are questions that do not yet have definitive answers, but they are questions that need to be asked for the mining industry to move into a future that is as filled with uncertainty and challenge as it is with promise and opportunity.On Feb. 16, the 2015 SME Annual Conference and Expo and the 117th CMA National Western Mining Association conference began with a keynote address, "The mine of the future: Forecasting opportunities and challenges for the global mining industry." Panelists from five sectors of the mining industry participated in the session, which was followed by the conference and expo, that in large part, were also trying to answer the question of what the mine of the future will look like.In coming months, Mining Engineering will continue the discussions and answer some of the questions submitted by members of the 2,000-person audience during the keynote address in a monthly feature called, "Predicting the Mine of the Future," and in Thought Leaders Podcasts with the panelists and other industry experts."

One of the fundamental issues having a great influence on the safety of operations performed in underground mines is the support of workings which should assure their stability in a given geological setting and mining-technical conditions during the life of their use. The process of designing and planning support for roadways may use analytical and empirical, as well as numerical methods. In view of the rapid increase in the data processing capacity of computers and the development of more and more enhanced software for numerical modeling, it seems to be advantageous to use numerical methods in searching for design solutions ? especially in the case of non-typical mining and geological conditions and in cases that need to take into consideration a great number of factors. The assessment of rock mass quality is of basic significance in designing mine supports. Fractures, dividing the rock mass into blocks, have an essential influence on the stability of the rock mass and underground construction. This paper presents examples of the fundamental underground investigations on the rock mass conducted by the Department of Extraction Technologies and Mining Supports of the Central Mining Institute in Poland, such as: penetrometric tests, introscopic examination, laboratory testing of rock samples and ground penetrating radar. Moreover, this contribution also presents examples of applications of three-dimensional numerical modeling for the purposes of stress-strain analysis of the rock mass around mine workings and computer-aided support design by means of FLAC3D (developed by Itasca) and Cosmos/M (developed by Structural Research and Analysis Corporation).

This paper discusses the utilization of automation to increase productivity of continuous miners. Automation techniques are used during the design stage to decrease the time required and ensure the accuracy of the design. This is followed by automated manufacturing processes to reduce manufacturing time and improve the quality and consistency of parts. Combined, the result is a more reliable machine which can provide ongoing production capability. With the use of automation to enhance operator effectiveness and monitoring machine condition the productivity of machines is also improved.

As all of us know, the "heat" is on for western coal. The need for western coal is critical if the nation is to reach the goals of Project Independence by 1985. Without the development of western coal, the goals will not be met. It's that simple! That's because 50 percent of our nation's coal reserves lie in the states of North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah. And surface mining is the key to unlocking these reserves. Of the nine states in the coal provinces, five-Wyoming, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota and Arizona-are the best examples since surface mining accounts for 88 to 100 percent of the coal mined in each of these states. Collectively, their annual production more than doubled between 1969 and 1972, rising to 35 million tons per year. And, taken individually, each state's production has more than doubled, also. Total annual production from these five key states could very well exceed 180 million tons per year by 1980-four times the 1972 production level. The biggest producer among the five is Wyoming. Wyoming's production tripled since 1969 to nearly 14 million tons in 1973. So the heat is on for western coal, especially from Wyoming. Now we come to the question of how to mine this increasingly precious mineral. What are the available methods? First, let's take a brief look at several characteristics of western coal deposits.

What is your personal view and assessment of the overall health of the industry in the current global economy? The economic outlook remains soft for the near future and, although the global economy is showing signs of recovery, uncertainty has tempered the pace of recovery. In addition to uncertainty, we are still facing significant economic challenges in many parts of the world, including Europe and the United States. The rapid expansion of China?s economy has recently slowed, further contributing to the sense of uncertainty in the overall health of the global economy. This situation is both a blessing and a curse, depending on which sector of the mining industry we are considering. For example, coal, industrial minerals, aggregates, base metal and precious metals markets are impacted by different forces and drivers and will experience different outcomes within the same economic environment. Let me give a few concrete examples to illustrate this concept. The prevailing economic uncertainty that I have just described tends to drive investors toward safe havens. Gold has historically been viewed as a safe haven and as long as investors shy away from traditional investments, gold prices will remain high and gold mining companies will continue to expand and invest capital in their operations. The same sluggish economy that drives gold prices higher has the opposite effect on other segments of the minerals industry. A great example of this is industrial minerals and aggregates used in construction. The markets that consume these minerals have contracted significantly over the past five years. The outlook for this segment is poor, as the glut of available housing continues to inhibit demand for new construction and, thus, many industrial minerals. In addition to this, the federal government?s lack of political will to enact long-term legislation funding transportation and infrastructure projects continues to be a drag on the U.S. aggregates industry.

Coal supply analysis has since about 1973 become a major activity of many scholars and consulting firms. The present paper is an effort to explain in as nontechnical fashion as possible the state of the art and what implications, if any, the research has for those actually engaged in producing coal or regulating the industry. l The discussion stresses the coal supply side of the models and makes limited comments about other elements in the analysis. To orient the appraisal, it is desirable to recall the features of coal supply that an adequate model should capture. The first considerations are the locational aspects of the industry. Transportation costs can, in some cases, exceed the production costs of coal, and thus any adequate model must incorporate a treatment of the economics of transporting coal from one location to another. A second major issue is that of the heterogeneity of coal; models should treat as well as possible such key differences among coals as their Btu and sulfur content. Third, we recognize that, with given technology and labor, capital, and supply costs, an expansion of the supply of a given type of coal in a specific region will occur only if prices rise. This is the familiar proposition of textbook economics that supply is an increasing function of price. Finally, over time, changes in technology, input cost, and depletion interact to cause changes in the price of given amounts of coal. Economics represents the net effect of this process by a shift over time in the supply curve. During the 1950s and 1960s, the trend was to reduce the production costs of a given output; subsequently costs rose sharply.

Mine seismicity is influenced by the mechanical properties of both near-seam rocks and overburden and the prudent selection of mining methods and mine layout designs. Using finite-difference modeling, experience in many U.S. mines and measurements of the pressure arch width, the author has reviewed the engineering design factors that control seismicity in room-and-pillar retreat operations for stiff stratigraphic conditions in deep western U.S. mines. By back analyzing the overburden response in now understood to have been inadequately designed historic room-and-pillar mine, the overburden collapse mechanism is addressed as well as the need for improvements in designs including panel and barrier pillar widths, and sequence of retreat.

"INTRODUCTION Twin Metals Minnesota (TMM) (operating as a joint venture between Duluth Metals and Antofagasta PLC) assumed control of the property in 2010. Amec became involved with the project in 2011 and in 2012 incorporated additional drilling in order to update historic resource estimates. The Maturi geological model and resource estimate was updated in 2014 to incorporate additional information obtained during 2013 and 2014 drill campaigns. In 2017, Amec was purchased by the Wood Group and is now known as Wood. Geology The Twin Metals Minnesota (TMM) Maturi, Maturi Southwest, Birch Lake, and Spruce Road properties are located in northeastern Minnesota (Figure 1). This talk discussed the Maturi deposit only, although all four deposits share similarities. The following geology is summarized from Peterson and Severson (2002).Maturi lies within the Superior Province of the Canadian Shield which is exposed in central and northeastern Minnesota and extends northward into Ontario. In eastern Minnesota, the Midcontinent Rift System developed during crustal scale extension in the Mesoproterozoic Era. The rift system is traceable, as exposures of mantle-derived tholeiitic to subalkaline mafic lava flows, intrusives, and rift-filling fluvial sedimentary rocks, and in the subsurface as a gravity anomaly (high), from the eastern end of Lake Superior, arcing west across the lake basin, and extending south-southwest to northeastern Kansas. Intrusion of the Duluth Complex, circa 1,108 - 1,099 Ma, was related to rifting and is co-genetic with the North Shore Volcanic Group mafic volcanic rocks that form the hanging wall of the Duluth Complex to the east. Cu-Ni-precious metals (PM) mineralization including Pt, Pd, Au and Ag within the Duluth Complex is hosted by mafic to ultramafic intrusive rocks that are part of the overall intrusive complex. The Duluth Complex is defined as a more or less continuous mass of mafic to felsic plutonic rocks that extends northeastward for more than 170 miles (275 km) in an arcuate fashion from Duluth nearly to Grand Portage in Minnesota. It is bounded by a footwall of Paleoproterozoic sedimentary rocks and Archean granite-greenstone terranes (Peterson and Severson, 2002), and a hanging wall largely of comagmatic anorthosite, rift related flood basalts, and hypabyssal intrusions of the Beaver Bay Complex. Mineralization is hosted in the basal mineralized zone (BMZ) of the South Kawishiwi Intrusion (SKI). The SKI magmas intruded sub-horizontally between hangingwall Anorthositic Series (AN) rocks and footwall granitic rocks of the Neoarchean Giants Range batholith (GRB). The new 9300 TPD sinter plant being built for China Steel Corporation is incorporating the latest computer technology for plant control systems. The control system will use a central computer and distributed micro-processors to control instrument loops and switching logic in the blending yard and sintering plant. All plant functions, including combustion and fan controls, will be controlled by remote microprocessors located throughout the plant, and connected by a communications link to the centrally located computer and control room. The design, programming, construction and operation of a microprocessor based control system presents new challenges to the control engineer. With microprocessors in the control system, more power exists in the individual control loop and many supervisory functions may be added at the loop level. The specification of the microprocessor system and the resolution of hardware design and control system design can lead to development of powerful systems capable of higher level control and optimization functions

In October 2000, temporary seismographic stations were installed above the Trail Mountain Mine, Emery County, Utah, USA to supplement a regional network. Over seven months, 1826 mining-induced seismic events were recorded with a magnitude range of M 0 to M 2.2 (Arabasz et al., 2002, 2005). Routine event locations for this dataset cluster around the longwall mining activity during the recording interval. However, applying a double difference relocation technique to the routine locations significantly improves the correlation between mining activity and event location. The resulting relocations depend greatly on station distribution and the number of arrival time picks. We use this dense temporary array to assess station distribution requirements for applying the double difference technique at other mines by systematically removing data from available stations, thus simulating sparser networks. The insight gained using the Trail Mountain dataset is used to develop a metric for assessing the usefulness of above-mine networks and to develop a tool for expanding seismic network coverage. To verify the appropriateness of these tools for wider application, we examine data from two additional mines located in the western United States. Improving the relative locations of mining-induced seismic events highlights the association of these events with active portions of the mine. Clusters, regions of quiescence and relative timing of events can be used by mine operators to assess hazard, optimize production, and evaluate performance of mine plans. The lessons learned from this study may be used in future network design to improve accuracy of event locations at other mines.

The quality of water in mine pit lakes depends in part on the physical limnology, including such factors as thermal and chemical stratification, turnover and the development of anoxic conditions with depth. Limnologic data collected from four existing pit lakes in Montana and Saskatchewan indicate that pit lakes develop a thermocline (temperature stratification) in the upper 10 to 30 m (33 to 100 ft) of the water column. Two o f the pit lakes, 26- and 55-m (85 and 180 ft) deep, undergo seasonal turnover of the entire water column, whereas two deeper, pit lakes, 110 and 240-m (360- to 790 ft) deep, undergo seasonal turnover of only the upper portion of the water column. In the deeper lakes, seasonal mixing does not extend through the entire water column, and a distinct chemocline develops with depth.

The conversion of organic matter to petroleum by hydrothermal activity is an easy process, occurring in nature in many types of environments. Geologically immature organic matter of marine sediments is being altered by this process in Guaymas Basin (Gulf of California), Escanaba Trough and Middle Valley (northeast Pacific), Bransfield Strait (Antarctica), and Atlantis 11 and Kebrit Deeps (Red Sea). Contemporary organic detritus and viable microorganisms are also converted in part to petroleum-like products by the same process when present to become entrained, as for example on the East Pacific Rise at 13o N and 21o N and on the mid-Atlantic Ridge at 26oN. The hydrocarbon products (methane to asphalt) generated in all these areas have been elucidated in terms of composition, organic matter sources, and analogy to reservoir petroleum. This petroleum represents a major input of carbon to the primary chemosynthetic productivity of hydrothermal vent systems and may be important to interactions with metals in hydrothermal ore formation.

This project will expand sanitary sewer within the City of Columbus. It consists of 2.5 mile long, 72-inch finished diameter pipe grouted inside 10.8-foot diameter tunnel excavation in shale. This paper describes the multi-faceted geotechnical exploration to minimize the underground risks. The tunnel will cross below a buried valley with minimum cover of highly weathered rock. The risk mitigation to cross the valley includes contingencies and cost allowances. Provisions to prevent impact on adjacent groundwater resources will be described. Latest construction updates will be provided including contractor alternate shaft support and pre-excavation probing to mitigate tunneling risk below the valley.

"The International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) is a nonprofit organization that represents all aspects of the tunneling and underground space industry worldwide. Next year, the ITA will be holding its annual World Tunnel Congress (WTC) in San Francisco, CA, April 22-28, 2016. The ITA’s mission is to be the leading international organization advancing the entire industry and promoting the use of tunnels and underground space through knowledge-sharing and application of technology. This article updates a series of articles about the ITA prepared in 2007 by Harvey Parker, former president of the ITA, in anticipation of the next WTC in San Francisco.ITA accomplishes its goals through a range of activities that includes organizing conferences, workshops and meetings, working group and committee studies, training, experiments and other activities. ITA is also involved in the publication of proceedings, reports, and guideline documents as well as facilitating interaction among its membership and with sister organizations and decision makers. ITA currently includes 73 member nations and several hundred affiliate members, including 15 prime sponsors and 63 supporters. ITA’s membership is comprised of member nations as well as sponsors and affiliate members.The United States has had a prominent role in ITA since its 1974 inception, when it was formed as a result of a worldwide survey conducted in the early 1970s by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Bill Lucke, from the U.S., who was in charge of tunnels for the U.S. Federal Railroad Administration, was a member of the organizing committee that created ITA and became a vice president of ITA. This paper summarizes the Bureau of Reclamation's experience in the use of boring machines to excavate six major tunnels on the Bureau's water resources development projects in the western United States. The summary of experience is presented as a compilation of brief case studies for each of the six tunnels. Each compilation presents data on the tunnel dimensions, geological characteristics of the excavated rock, the tunneling machine used, machine operation, muck handling, method of tunnel support, ventilation system, and related information. The listing of the six tunnels in Table 1 reflects a diversity of tunnel lengths and diameters. However, despite this diversity of dimensions as well as the variety of rock encountered during excavation, the six tunnels have one major characteristic in common: their excavation was significantly expedited by the use of boring machines. Beginning with the 10,079-foot-long Tunnel No. 1 on the Navajo Indian Irrigation Project in New Mexico - the Bureau's first tunnel to be excavated by a boring machine - the boring machines, or "moles," have demonstrated their effectiveness in rapid and economical tunnel excavation. Tunnel No. 1, virtually 2 miles long, was bored through in 9 months, an unprecedented achievement in Bureau engineering experience, as compared with tunnels previously excavated by conventional means. The rheological behavior of high concentrated coal -water slurry (cws), a new liquid fuel, is an important factor in the preparation, transportation and combustion. The conventional viscosimeters designed for Use with true fluids are not suitable to the measurement of the rheological behavior of cws. So that a special viscosimeter of tube type for cws was designed and set up in .laboratory. Experiments using two kinds of cws from two provinces from P. R. Olfna were conducted. It is found from test results that the experimental cws possess the rheological character of Bingham fluid and there is the existence of the wall effects which causes the measurement errors. In our former paper published the wall effects were discussed III the light of methods of Odroyd and Jastrzerbsiki to make the correction of the experimental results. But a number of tests are necessary to meet the need of determining the slip coefficient. In this paper the models of the wall slip velocity and the thickness of the slip layer of Bingham fluid were proposed III in theoretical approach which were satisfactorily used in the correction of the measured results of the rheological character of cws.

Peru has become an established mining country. The industry and industry-related businesses account for a significant amount of the country´s revenue, on state and local levels. But like other countries with thriving mining industries, Peru has seen its mining industry revenues fall off in recent years due to a lackluster global economy. And the mining industry in Peru must also deal with increasing concerns about mining?s environmental impacts, local community and other social issues, as well as a regulatory environment that has placed more restrictions on what miners can do. That said, the Peruvian government is beginning to realize how important mining and natural resource development is to building the nation?s economy, improving its infrastructure and lifting its population out of poverty. The government support was evident during the Perumin 2013 mining convention, held in September in Arequipa. In addition to Peru?s President Ollanta Humala speaking at the closing ceremony, the country?s ministers of Energy and Mines, and Economy and Finance participated in the event, as well as numerous other federal and state authorities. Perumin is put on by the Instituto de Ingenieros de Minas del Peru (IIMP, or Peruvian Institute of Mine Engineers). The 31st edition of the convention, billed as the ?world?s largest mining convention? by the IIMP, this event was led by Abraham Chahuan CEO of Antamina and Romulo Mucho (SME member) as president of IIMP, attracted about 118,000 participants from more than 48 countries. This was more than the anticipated 75,000 attendance and well past the 51,000 people who attended the 2011 convention. The last edition of PERUMIN was led by the CEO of Compañía Minera Antamina, Abraham Chahuan and Rómulo Mucho (SME member) and representative of the IIMP. The event attracted more than 1,000 journalists from all over the world, the IIMP said. A total of 2,213 booths from equipment and machinery supplying companies from the five continents were present at the Mining Technology Exhibition (Extemin), including companies from the United States, Canada, China, South Africa, Germany, Australia, Brazil and Chile, among others. The convention has grown so large in recent years, that the IIMP shifted its location from Tecsup vocational school in Arequipa to the Cerro Juli Convention Center. The venue is 116 percent larger than Tecsup, the IIMP reported, covering about 20 ha (40 acres). It was reported by Latinomineria magazine that about 10 million Peruvian soles were invested in the new venue to create a world-class events center. It was also estimated that the event generated more than 234 million soles to Arequipa?s economy.

As virgin coal reserves dwindle, more and more mines are being opened in areas with previous mining. As addressed in this conference before, there are solutions available for designing mines extracting coal from reserves with known underground workings above or below the target seam. Often times, however, mining begins with limited knowledge of the underground workings. Even with careful planning, the proposed design has limited success because the ?facts? as presented during planning turn out not to be as accurate as one would like. At National Coal?s Mine #14, mining the Walnut Mountain seam, after driving the main entries in some 34 crosscuts, it was found during routine mine examinations that the pillars had separated from the roof in a few areas of the mains. Immediate roof conditions proved to be sound but questions arose concerning the stability of the main roof and floor. Core tests were done to better determine the rock strengths and characteristics. The paper presents the ideology used to tackle the effects of mining over old works in an operating coal mine. This paper discusses the analysis of the symptoms observed and the steps taken to ensure that this pillar separation was caused by the underlying old workings and that the separation was expected and controllable.

Of all the industrial clay minerals, attapulgite probably enjoys the widest variety of applications. A review published over three years ago by Haden and Schwint (18) cited some 80 individual uses, a list which continues to grow. In its near half-century of commercial life, attapulgite has received a generous share of research study and patent development effort, both on the part of producers as well as consumers. This work has been divided between understanding the mineral's structure or properties and applying it to specific end-uses. Naturally, information gained from the former has pointed toward opportunities in the latter. References of particular significance are cited throughout the text. Attapulgite's variety of uses derives from the unique three-dimensional structure and needle-shaped particle form of this crystalline hydrated magnesium aluminum silicate. Its inherent colloidal and sorptive properties are well known, and distinguish it from its sister clay minerals. Attapulgite is characterized by its high surface area, porosity, sorptivity, and decolorizing power. Its slips or slurries are viscous and thixotropic, however, unlike bentonite are not flocculated by electrolytes. In Table I are compared the general properties of attapulgite, bentonite, and kaolin. The properties in Table I are documented in greater detail by the wealth of scientific literature which has been published on the composition (14)(15), structure (6)(16), surface (16)(4)(22)(24), adsorption (31)(4)(5)(25), rheology (10-11)(12)(13)(26)(27)(32), plasticity (30) (31), and chemistry (23)(3)(7) of attapulgite. Attapulgite is the principal mineral constituent (70 to 80%) of attapulgite clay as it is commercially produced in the Georgia-Florida area of the United States. As mined, this clay also contains 10 to 1S% montmorillonite, sepiolite, and other clays; 4 to 8% quartz, and 1 to 5% calcite or dolomite. Shield leg pressure data from all shields and shearer locationwith time stamp from a mechanized longwall face are monitored and recorded in a surface computer. These data contain random noise due to power failure, leakage of legs, bad sensor reading and other maintenance or geo-mechanical problems. An algorithm is developed to detect mining cycle parameters such as setting and final pressures and duration of the cycle from these data for the analysis of periodic roof weighting phenomena. The intensities and persistence of periodic roof weighting are the vital information to the mine management to take judicious decision on longwall operation. The paper presents details of the algorithm which identifies 96% of mining cycles from the noisy data belonging to consecutive 5 months or 410 m of face advancement. Based on this analysis, 2 types of periodic roof weighting phenomena are detected, namely, (i) normal type—having peak intensity of 75 to 90% of yield pressure, interval of occurrences of about 10 to 15 m with persistence of 3 to 4 m and (ii) severe type—peak intensity over 90% of yield pressure, interval of 25 to 40 m with persistence of over 10 m. It is envisaged that these phenomena have direct relationship with main roof thickness, its overhung length and material properties.
