13.1-SUBSIDENCE AND GROUND MOVEMENT ROBERT STEFANKO 13.1.1-SUBSIDENCE AND FAILURE This treatment of subsidence and ground movement will be confined to subsidence control for limiting surface damage by assessing the significant parameters affecting ground movements during mining to optimize mining techniques. The material will be equally applicable to evaporite mining as well as coal but will not deal with block caving or similar systems where failure is deliberately induced and surface protection is not necessary or provided. When an underground opening is established, the original equilibrium is disturbed with resultant stress concentrations. While many factors are involved in opening stability, the span (W) undoubtedly is one of the most important factors in failure. Assuming it is relatively small, the overlying rock strata can bridge across the opening and little if any movement or convergence of top and bottom will occur. However, as the span increases, a point is reached where the stress in the overlying rock strata exceeds some strength value of the rock, and the top breaks. If the opening span is limited to some subcritical value (-We) and/or is at great depth (D), a pseudo-arch will form, achielring stability before rupture occurs to the surface. The boundary of this arch is thought to approximate an ellipse in form with the major axis vertical and equal to four times W, although there has been little field research to substantiate this theory. However, if the width of this opening is increased at this horizon to some critical value (W,) or the same span is created in a shallower seam, the overlying strata ill progressively rupture to the surface and the characteristic subsidence trough is formed (Fig. 13-1) The area of the surface affected is much greater than the area of the seam extracted, depending on the "angle of draw" (a), which is the angle between a vertical line from the edge of the opening and another line extended to a point at which subsidence tails out to zero. This angle has been found to be about 35° in Europe but is rather academic, being a function of instrument precision in detecting subsidence. Since the subsidence effect is so small at any point beyond n 25° angle, this latter may be considered the practical limit of subsidence. Further- more, indications are that the angle of draw varies with depth and nature of the strata.' In a field study over a 1,000-ft-deep potash mine in New Mexico, the maximum angle of draw was found to be 51.5°.2 So far, only a single opening has been considered. However, the width of the excavation applies to any complex mining system of entries, rooms and longwalls as long as the seam has been fully extracted and the width represents the distance from one solid rib to another. It will be noted that the amount of vertical displacement varies from point to point on the surface (s), but the maximum subsidence for a given trough occurs at the center (S). This latter value may not he equal to the maximum possible subsidence (Sm) which occurs only if a critical or super- critical (+W,) width has been exceeded (Fig. 13-1). Substantial surface damage can result when subsidence occurs. Factors affecting the amount and type of ground movement are: thickness and properties of the seam, angle of draw, width of excavation, depth and type of overburden, inclinations of strata and surface, and the amount of support left in the gob. Mineral Development Agreements (MDA?s) are a cooperative mechanism in Canada by which the federal and individual provincial governments can coordinate their scientific, techno- logical and market development resources in order to implement measures designed to stimulate mineral exploration and development by the private sector; the objective, ultimately, being to increase the mineral industry?s contribution to provincial economies. In the latest round of MDA?s, which was initiated in 1984, a significant number of planned activities relate to industrial minerals. This paper will describe the nature and importance of MDA's in Canada and will outline the wide range of activities taking place with respect to industrial minerals.

This study provides an effective determination process of the interface microstructural parameters in the numerical modelling of the mechanical interaction between two different geomaterials involved with frictional-bonded interfaces, such as the interaction between backfill columns and the surrounding rocks, or the soil-structure interaction, by using the coupled finite-difference and discrete-element (FD-DE) method. Three-dimensional numerical direct shear tests were conducted on the coupled FD-DE model of the combined rock-cemented rockfill (R-CRF) specimens with the frictional-bonded interface. With the microstructural parameters determined, the macro-mechanical properties of the interface of the coupled model were calibrated to well fit with the theoretical values of the combined specimen under the direct shear condition assumed according to the Mohr–Coulomb strength criterion. Evident elastoplastic shear behaviour was observed on the interfaces, and excellent agreement was attained between the shapes of the theoretical and simulated shear stress-displacement curves of the coupled models at different servo-controlled normal stresses. Particulate-scale force chains inside the DE model of the CRF specimen were highly consistent with the force contour on the FD model of the rock specimen, demonstrating the shear stress evolution of the coupled model at different shear displacements. Parametric studies verified the effects of the deformation properties of the interface parallel bonds on the shape of shear stress-displacement curves of the coupled models. The test results validated the feasibility and rationality of the coupled FD-DE method for modelling the combined specimens with frictional-bonded interfaces or joints. Furthermore, this study provides valuable numerical modelling experience for investigating the shear behaviour at the interface between cemented backfill columns and surrounding walls by using the coupled FD-DE method.

The Tessenderlo-Kerley Leachprocess has been shown to be effective in the removal of residual copper from molybdenite concentrates. Concentrates of varying mineralogy, including those containing relatively large amounts of chalcopyrite, have been successfully leached on laboratory and pilot plant scales. The lixiviant system is ammonia andammonium bisulfite with air / oxygen addition. An abrasive is added which greatly enhances the kinetics, and it is subsequently screened out and reused. The dissolved copper is easily recovered using existing technology. Extraction profiles, reagent consumptions, and mineralogical data are presented.

The Westerly Storage Tunnel is a 25-foot diameter segmentally lined storage tunnel that is a major component of the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District's Project Clean Lake that is designed to capture 39 million gallons of untreated CSO overflows from entering Lake Erie. During the final stages of the project completion, a large-scale rock fallout incident occurred during the final lining installation operations at the down-stream end of the tunnel that extended beyond the designed primary support system. This paper outlines the level of coordination and collaboration between the Owner, Designer and Contractor to remediate the situation safely, quickly and effectively.

In 2015, 40 longwall mines provided nearly 60 percent of U.S. underground coal production. During this time, about 80 percent of ground-fall-related fatalities occurred in areas where the mine roof was supported. In an attempt to better understand the status quo of current longwall support practices in the United States, during a period between 2010 and 2017, researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) visited a sample of 25 longwall mines representing nearly 50 percent of the currently active longwall mines operating in all of the major U.S. longwall producing regions. The data presented here indicate that the types and amount of roof support being installed in modern U.S. longwall mines have reduced ground-fall accident and injury rates to levels never seen before. However, the complete elimination of unintended roof falls in U.S. longwall mines has remained elusive. The data in this paper can be used by mine operators and engineers to determine where their chosen type and density of roof support occur on the spectrum of observations contained in this database. Additionally, this data can be used to enhance, supplement and support additional research on longwall gateroad support systems.

BRS, Inc. has utilized Carlson's Natural RegradeTM software to design the reclamation and stabilization of abandoned open pit uranium mine spoils, AML Project 16N, located in the Gas Hills Uranium District in central Wyoming. This work was completed for the State of Wyoming's Abandoned Mine Land Program (AML) on preSMCRA (Surface Mining Reclamation and Control Act) sites for which no reclamation obligation existed. The project successfully stabilized an eroding spoil dump, enhanced the local view shed, created habitat diversity and provided a significant source of fill material for open pit highwall hazard mitigation efforts. Additionally, the project served to evaluate innovative reclamation design methods, engineering software and grade control technology. This project was nominated for a National Association of Abandoned Mine Land Programs award by the State of Wyoming. The results of this project will be presented as a case history of the Natural RegradeTM approach to surface mine reclamation. Based on the successful application of this new mine reclamation technology on the AML 16N Project, reclamation designs for spoils associated with planned underground uranium mine operations at the Velvet Mine in the Lisbon Valley Uranium District of Utah for Uranium One USA, Inc have been prepared and will be presented. Critical elements will be the encapsulation of unsuitable materials, long term hydrologic stability, and sequencing and staging of ore and mine waste for final reclamation surface construction. The goal of the Uranium One Velvet Project will be to apply best available technology to reclamation planning and fully integrate the reclamation design with the mine planning. Benefits of the approach should include improved public and regulatory perception of the project, facilitate mine permit approvals and the eventual timely release of reclamation bonds, as it is anticipated the stable landform created through this process will result in more rapid stabilization of the site to pre-mine geomorphic conditions. NATURAL REGRADETM CASE STUDY AML Project 16N, D-9 and K Pit Reclamation Project, is located in an intensely disturbed area of the West Gas Hills Uranium Mining District in Fremont County, Wyoming. The overall design calls for the placement of approximately 7 million cubic yards of backfill materials in the D9 and K Pits, imported from adjacent mine spoils including the Central Spoils, and from local highwall excavation. Figure 1 shows the location of the Central Spoils excavation area, as well as the D9 and K Pits fill area. The entire project is located on public lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management, Lander, Wyoming District Office. No access controls are in place at the abandoned mine sites. The public lands are administered under a multiple use land policy including grazing of range land, public recreation, active mining and exploration, and oil and gas. The project site is located along Fremont County Road No. 5, which is a moderately well traveled road. Reclamation of the numerous and large abandoned open pits in the Gas Hills Uranium District has reduced the risk of death or injury to the public. Site History and Background The Gas Hills Uranium District was mined by multiple companies during the period from 1955 to 1981. The uranium was hosted in the Wind River formation, a sequence of soft sedimentary layers of interbedded sandstone, clayey shales, and conglomerates. Uranium was precipitated out of ground water in classic roll front deposits, which are found from very near surface to depths greater than 400 feet. Prior to the enactment of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA), very little reclamation work was performed when mines were abandoned or closed. The State of Wyoming Abandoned Mine Lands Program has worked to mitigate hazards associated with large open pits, control migration of unsuitable materials and restore watershed functionality of lands in the district. Additional reclamation is being performed by mining companies on bonded lands. Figure 2, Gas Hills Uranium District aerial photograph, shows the extent of the mining disturbance in the district. [ ] Project Hazards and Concerns The purpose of AML Project 16N is to mitigate hazardous conditions and risk to the public associated with open pit highwalls and toxic, acid forming, and /or radioactive mine waste materials. The D9 and K Pits are contiguous open pits characterized by an 8,800 foot long hazardous highwall that averages over 200 feet tall. The application of gob-side entry retaining (GER) in steeply pitching seam longwall mining with a hard roof has always been a difficult problem. Based on the simplified roof beam mechanical model, the traditional gob-side entry retaining by packing (GERP) roof structure evolution process and its problems with use in steeply pitching seams are analyzed. Therefore, based on the unique characteristics of the gangue rolling and accumulating in the steeply pitching seam, this contribution proposes an innovative method of gob-side entry retaining by roof cutting (GERRC) in steeply pitching seam and details its technical process. The roof structures of the GERRC and the GERP are compared. Taking the Chang Gouyu Coal Mine as a case study, field experiments were carried out. This research finds that the GERRC can both overcome the impact of rolling gangue on roadside support and make the rolling and stacking gangue become a roadside support. The roof structure of the GERRC is in a one-time statically indeterminate state, which is conducive to the stability of the roadway. In the field test, the total displacement of the roadway roof and floor is 97 mm, the supporting pressure of the serried single props is less than 28 MPa, and the props have no obvious bending phenomenon.

Communication was the buzzword for health and safety products at the 2008 MINExpo, and it is still important in 2012. Products unveiled following the Miner Act in 2006 have been upgraded and improved. Saving lives and reducing injuries through better leadership, planning and practice is the goal of every mine professional.

The percentage depletion deduction on Federal Income Tax Returns under the provisions of the 1939 Internal Revenue Code and of Sections 611 to Section 615, inclusive, of the revenue act of 1954, have created innumerable administrative difficulties, and a new interpretation of "gross income from the property" in that the Courts have expanded the ideas of what constitutes "gross income from the property" to a degree unheard of and unthought of prior to the enactment of these two codes. Originally, under the Revenue Acts of 1917, 1918, and 1920 depletion was allowable, based upon mine valuations as of March 1, 1913; if the mine was owned prior to March 1, 1913; upon cost, as of the date of acquisition if purchased subsequent to March 1, 1913; and upon a "discovery" basis if the mine was discovered after March 1, 1913, The "jab" for mine valuations as of March 1, 1913 and for discovery valuations and depletion was not as bad as it has been made out to be. Thousands of valuations and estimates of reserves were made and agreed upon between taxpayers and Internal Revenue Service engineers and as the years went on the answers have been found to be "reasonable." However, human nature being what it is each case was a battle of wits - of a sort - and many resulted in severe differences of opinion and litigation. As tax rates increased the situation was not bettered. I could talk for several hours on this phase of depletion but it is all past now andwould not give any real service or better understanding of the matter.

Grupo Acera, HYLSA originated in 1942 when Hojalata y Lamina began operations to supply steel strip for the Cuauhtémoc Brewery, the parent company. Production began in April, 1943 with growth accelerated because of World War II. By 1948 the company was producing its own steel from electric furnaces charged with scrap iron. Further expansion was hampered by the fluctuations in availability, price and quality of scrap iron. As a result, a search was made for a suitable process to enable HYLSA to satisfy its need for a reliable source of feed for its steel-making facilities. Their relatively low iron requirements at the time did not justify the very high capital investments required using the conventional blast furnace method. Processes which by-passed the blast furnaces were very much in their infancy and were not commercially tested. HYLSA then undertook an investigation of the direct reduction processes, knowing full well that much larger companies in other countries had investigated several processes but their work had not established a trend toward direct reduction or any particular process. However, after much effort and persistence HYLSA arrived at a process which suited their conditions. By using Mexican iron ore and natural gas they developed the now well-known H. y L. Process to produce sponge iron. Concurrent with the start of investigations which led to the H. y L. Process, HYLSA began an exploration program for a suitable source of iron ore. Thus in 1951, Cia. The project involves the construction of a new aqueduct tunnel by an Earth Pressure Balance TBM tunnel for the Novaliches-Balara Aqueduct No 4 (NBAQ4) project in Metro Manila. It comprises a 7.3 km long and 3.1 m internal diameter tunnel that can deliver up to 1,000 MLD of raw water and the tunnel passes under urban residential and urban populated areas adjacent to and along Commonwealth Avenue. A new reservoir intake structure was constructed in the La Mesa reservoir by a cofferdam and the TBM breakthrough connected the reservoir to the outlet surge shaft structure and the downstream pipe network system connecting to the Balara Water Treatment Plant. The TBM incorporated a double articulated head configuration to allow tight 80 m radius curves to navigate some of the difficult alignment considerations. The alignment passed very close to some existing foundations for MRT7 and needed to clear several tight curves to remain within government land ownership. The project excavated through the local Guadalupe weak rock formations and there was minimal ground movements observed as a result of the work.

"Highwall miners have been widely used to extract additional coal reserves from existing surface operations, particularly on contour operations in the Appalachian coalfields. Using a continuous miner cutting head, coal may be extracted from significant depths (such as 150 m), leaving behind an array of web and barrier pillars with the purpose of maintaining highwall stability. This method inherently involves elevated risks to both equipment and personnel due to proximity to and increased exposure time near highwalls. As a result, modern operations should actively design web and barrier pillars to maximize extraction while providing adequate stability. The ARMPS-HWM software, an empirical-based program created for the design of web and barrier pillars at highwall mining operations, is one such approach. The calculated stability factor is compared with empirically established guidelines produced from examining case histories.The ARMPS-HWM program is a handy tool for initial design, but understanding the site’s structurally significant geologic features and geomechanical behavior is important and may potentially increase extraction. We created a two-dimensional numerical model using FLAC3D and calibrated it to ensure pillar strength, closely following the Mark- Bieniawski formula for a typical range of pillar geometries and overburden properties. The development of pillar stresses along a highwall panel was then numerically investigated as mining progressed, and the stress distribution between barrier pillars was found to be asymmetric, which can result in an over-design of the closeout web pillars if tributary area loading is assumed. Finally, the importance of adequate barrier pillar stability is highlighted."

Oxide gold reserves are being rapidly depleted, especially in regions with long histories of gold mining, such as the Black Hills of South Dakota. However, these districts often have substantial additional deposits, where gold is refractory. It is not amenable to traditional cyanide extraction due to the presence of sulfide minerals that encapsulate or otherwise preclude the economic extraction of the gold. Several technologies have been developed to render refractory sulfide deposits amenable to traditional cyanide processing. These include roasting and pressure autoclaving. Unfortunately, these oxidation processes require substantial capital investment and incur significant operating costs. Microorganisms that obtain energy for their life processes by the oxidation of iron sulfides can be used to treat gold-bearing refractory sulfide minerals. As the bacteria convert the sulfide to sulfate, they expose any gold associated with the sulfide matrix. This makes the gold amenable to cyanide extraction.

As the Federal government along with individual states continue to grapple with the job of refining a comprehensive energy policy, coal continually stands out as an energy source which heralds a combination of old and new capabilities like an energy planners prophecy, but which is plagued with serious environmental constraints. To determine what level of coal utilization is ultimately possible for states East of the Mississippi, whose high sulfur content coal presents the most paramount of challenges, one must consider product availability, via existing transportation modes, the developing industrial markets and the ability of coal to meet the challenge of becoming an environmentally acceptable fuel. Gasification is emerging as a form of utilization, which during the next twenty years stands a good chance of being able to meet the challenge of making coal an environmentally clean, easily transport-able and usable fuel. It can be argued that, of all the potential ways of utilizing high sulfur coal, coal gasification is perhaps the most expensive, the most financially risky and carries environmental liabilities of its own. Synthetic gas and oil markets will undeniably be a function of price and demand, which, for the purposes of this paper, I'm assuming will begin to merge in the late 1980's and into the 1990's. This is also presuming that public utility commissions will allow favorable price structure ruling so that gasified coal products can be rolled into their respective rate base, much the same as synthetic natural gas from petroleum by-products are currently being priced. The comparative economic markets of coal to gas pro-duct have plenty of time to mature. There is an approximate twelve-year lead time needed to bring coal gasification plants on line which will be able to compete in the market place for natural gas and oil customers.

This paper explores the impact of the significant difference between the number of geochemical assays conducted for grade estimation and the number of comminution tests performed for throughput and performance forecasting. Both grade and throughput are key factors in determining the project. We analysed 154 feasibility study reports to assess the impact of sample frequency for comminution test work on project revenue. This disparity in size between assay and comminution data arises because geological and resource-grade risks cannot be managed without extensive geochemical testing, whereas comminution risks are traditionally mitigated through design methods and the use of contingencies. This approach is partly due to the relatively high cost and large sample requirements associated with traditional comminution tests. Our analysis demonstrates that insufficient comminution sampling and testing leads to uncertainties in throughput forecasts, creating significant financial risks. Data from the feasibility studies show that a 1% change in mill throughput can result in up to a 5% variation in Net Present Value (NPV), underscoring the sensitivity of project economics to operational performance. Building on previous work, we reference studies that reveal how low frequency of comminution testing can increase uncertainty in mill throughput forecasts and increase financial risks. We propose an approach that optimises the number of comminution samples tested to enhance forecast accuracy and reduce NPV variance. By adopting this approach, mining projects can improve financial reliability and mitigate risks associated with underperformance in SAG and AG mill-based operations.

During harsh weather conditions, the presence of fog, dust in the environment degrades the image’s quality, which affects the visibility of drivers of heavy earth-moving machinery in opencast mines. Due to low visibility, mining operations cannot be carried out as drivers are easily prone to accidents. This paper proposes a technique that includes developing a vision enhancement system called perceptive driving assistant system for increasing visibility of real-time video of the road in front of the vehicle for operators of heavy earth-moving machinery at opencast mines during harsh weather conditions to overcome the problem. The system consists of high-quality Internet Protocol cameras and thermal cameras for real-time image processing and other well-defined devices, which is quite capable of enhancing the visibility of the image, outlining edges of the road, and detecting obstacles present on the path of operators for smooth driving and reducing threat of accidents. A high-speed graphical processing unit has been used for quality-performance parallel computing, which is well suited for real-time operations to empower fast real-time operations. The calculated frame per second (fps) of image enhancement, object detection, and edge detection is 17.91, 15.91, and 25.09 fps, respectively. The actual frame rate is 26.07 fps, and after applying the algorithm, the final frame rate is 19.65 fps. The calculated accuracy of the object detection model is 81.23%. Field trials indicate that the developed system has performed adequately during foggy weather.

American Electric Power Company (AEP operates 31 coal mines in three states, and some 26 electric generating stations (19 coal-fired) located in the Ohio River Basin. Normally the system burns over 36,071,600 tonnes (40,000,000 tons) of coal and generates in excess of 3.6 X 1018 J (100 billion kwh) of electricity per year. In 1975, AEP, in response to the progressively more stringent air quality requirements of the clean air act, acquired large low-sulfur reserves in Carbon County, Utah (Figure 1. Location Map). Price River Coal Company (PRCC) is the operator OF this multi-seam complex, which is part of the Book Cliffs coalfield at an elevation exceeding 1,829 m (6,000 ft.). The topography is mountainous and divided by numerous canyons. Flat areas are at a premium (Figure 2. Castle Gate Area). Modern high production longwall mining takes in some top and bottom waste, and in this particular operation, it amounts to about 14% of the ROM tonnage.

The Zarafshan/Newmont Joint Venture operates the Muruntau heap leach project, located in the Kyzylkum desert of central Uzbekistan. The mine produces more than 12.4 t/a (400,000 oz/year) of gold from low-grade oxide ore stockpiles adjacent to the Muruntau open pit. It is op¬erated by the Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Combine and is one of the largest gold resources known (Fig. 1). Since commissioning in 1995, total heap leach production has exceeded 21 t (675,000 oz). The joint venture uses four-stage crushing and screening to produce a final product for heap leaching, Merrill-Crowe processing and local refining.

The Otjikoto Gold Mine in the Republic of Namibia is located approximately 300 kilometers north of the capital city of Windhoek. The project features surface mining with a modern gravity/carbon-in-pulp mill for ore treatment and recovery of gold. Initial mill design capacity was 2.5 million tonne per annum but then expanded after 9 months of operation to 3.1 million tonne per annum. The technical steps to establish the Otjikoto mill design from process selection in the due diligence stage, through flowsheet development in the feasibility study followed by detailed engineering design are reviewed in this paper along with mill performance during start-up and in 2019.
