A questionnaire was sent out to three classes of mines to determine the extent of the heat problem in U.S. and Foreign underground mines. The following list shows the replies received from this questionnaire, however not all the known hot mines in the US replied. A complete listing of the results can be seen in Appendix I. 1) US coal mines - 37 replies 2) US non coal mines - 23 replies 3) Foreign non coal mines - 36 replies. At the present time there are approximately eleven non coal and one coal mine in the US experiencing heat problems which require special efforts to maintain an acceptable working place climate. However since the survey was completed some of them have been placed on standby. The Mine Safety & Health Administration (MSHA) does not have any specific regulations relating to heat stress. Informally the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists guidelines are followed which use wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) with values ranging from 26.7°C to 31.1°C for a moderate workload, and different rest regimes. An MSHA report (Misaqi 1976) recommended that conditions should not exceed 26.1°C WBGT for men and 24.4°C WBGT for women. However, quite recently the organizations involved with planning two of the proposed nuclear waste repositories in the United States, have opted for the criteria of an air cooling power of 300 w/m2, and a WBGT of 27'C respectively.

"This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2016 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature, SNL Metals & Mining (SNL), an offering of S&P Global Market Intelligence (New York, NY), and specialists in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Minerals Information Center. Three types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. dollars provided by SNL; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2016 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events and legislation that affected exploration activities including economic, social and political conditions, which were derived from published sources and discussions with USGS and industry specialists. Commodity and regional compilations are presented in this summary. Because multiple sources were used to develop commodity and regional compilations, statistics may vary depending on the source and type of data that are being reported. The SNL data summarize budget estimates for worldwide exploration activities in 2016 for 30 nonfuel mineral commodities and metal alloys, based on company surveys. Surveys focused on precious metals (gold, platinumgroup platinumgroup metals (PGMs) and silver), base metals, (cobalt, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, tin and zinc), bulk commodities (bauxite, chromite, iron ore, manganese, phosphate and potash) and other commodities (aluminum, antimony, diamond, graphite, heavy-mineral sands, lithium, niobium, rare-earth elements (REEs), scandium, tantalum, tungsten, uranium, vanadium and yttrium). Information on uranium exploration activities was included in SNL’s survey for the first time in 2007. Data on lithium, niobium, phosphate, potash, REE and tungsten were compiled for the first time in 2010, and scandium, vanadium and yttrium were added in 2014 because of their increased topical significance. Since 1999, companies with exploration budgets of $100,000 and greater were included in the SNL surveys. SNL budget estimates exclude coal, and oil and gas. The 2016 SNL mining company survey compilation was reported by SNL to include an estimated 95 percent of the world’s nonfuel mineral exploration budgets. The 5 percent that was not covered was accounted for by companies that chose not to participate in the SNL survey, private companies that do not publish their budget data and government-funded exploration activities."

It is unlikely that improvement in truck efficiency and capacity can fully offset the effects of inflation, fuel cost/shortages, and increasing haul distances as in the past. Therefore, investigations of haulage systems less sensitive to these problems are warranted. Thus, this Bureau of Mines contract research study on alternative continuous haulage systems was prepared. This study identifies the physical, economic, and technological parameters in the application of continuous haulage systems with special attention to under pit slope conveyors and skip hoisting systems. The evaluation data were gathered from extensive literature searches, European/North American mine visits, and industry comments. The study concludes that continuous underground haulage is a viable method within the proper geometric configurations.

The USBH Mining Systems and Ground Control Generic Research Center funded a project leading to the improved planning of airflow and refrigeration in underground mines experiencing hot working conditions. The project was broken down into approximately five phases: 1. Visiting some of the known hot mines in the U.S. and sending out a questionnaire to determine other mines which might be experiencing hot working conditions in the future. 2. Choosing two mines in which to conduct measurements to determine the insitu rock thermal conductivity and diffusivity, and comparing these values with laboratory determined values. 3. Investigating computer programs available for mine climate simulation, and testing these programs with case study examples from the two mines where the rock thermal properties were measured. 4. Considering improved ways of estimating the wetness factor and experimenting with the use of heat flux meters to more directly measure the rock heat inflow into the airstream. 5. Applying the results of these investigations to simulating the climate for future mine development and production areas at the two- mines. The project is approximately two thirds completed. At the time of writing, the insitu measurements at one of the mines are still being recorded. This paper will be describing the procedures and results of the insitu rock thermal property measurements, and give a brief description of some of the simulated results obtained for a mechanised cut and fill stope case study from the Homestake Gold Hine in South Dakota.

Organized efforts toward the prevention of injuries and occupational diseases have been of comparatively recent origin in the mining industry, dating generally from the beginning of this century. Mining-and particularly underground mining- is more hazardous in many respects than most other major industries, and continual and increasing attention has been given to its health and safety aspects. The importance of the physical well-being of those engaged in mining was recognized by Agricola, who, after describing the hazards encountered in 16th century mining operations, stated that "Some of these evils, as well as certain other things, are the reason why pits are occasionally abandoned." In the past 50 yr particularly, mine managements and labor organizations, separately or collectively, have mounted productive efforts toward the prevention of accidents and industry-associated diseases and illnesses. A statistical study of this period indicates that increasing awareness coupled with the endeavors of all concerned agencies has resulted in decreasing frequency of occurrences of injuries and illnesses. In recent years particularly the mining industry has used the services of safety engineers, industrial hygienists, inspectors, ventilation engineers and other specializing in locating and correcting deficiencies affecting the welfare of employees. Concurrently, the labor movement has incorporated into its organization individuals working in the fields of health and safety, many devoting full time to these responsibilities. Others serve in behalf of their fellow workmen as on-the-job safety representatives. Most authorities agree that accidents are caused by (1) unsafe acts, (2) unsafe conditions and, exceptionally, (3) Acts of God. The "unsafe act" often is cited as the prime cause. but many accidents, and attendant injuries, are the result of a blend of "unsafe acts" and "unsafe conditions," with each chargeable in varying proportions. It therefore is necessary to consider both the physical elements of the mine plant and the training, mental attributes and actions of all personnel involved. Analysis of an accident, if based on hasty reconnaissance and unduly hurried questioning, seldom will disclose more than surface causes and consequently will result in inadequate measures to prevent repetition. Mining involves unavoidable and calculated risks, as in all facets of life. It is most important then that men employed in mining be schooled in the hazards and develop fully the ability to evaluate and minimize risks. The environment, of underground mining often is harsh and strange compared to the more natural surface conditions man has learned to cope with as a part of established life patterns. The miner. therefore, must adapt to unusual situations and conditions and must develop a mental attitude permitting acceptance of change. 3.1-INDUSTRY-AFFILIATED SAFETY AGENCIES L. S. The Pyke asbestos deposits were discovered by Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd., in 1969 during the course of base metal exploration on the South Island of New Zealand. Extensive occurrences of chrysotile asbestos were found associated with the Red Mountain Ultramafics in the headwaters of the Pyke River, and to the north and south along the ultramafic belt for a distance of 70 kilometers. Surface evaluation and drilling by Kennecott in 1970 and 1971 identified numerous small deposits of good grade fibre in the Little Red Hills between the Pyke and Barrier Rivers. Additional drilling and three adits have been completed by other companies since that time. The property is presently held by Lime and Marble, Ltd. Of Nelson, New Zealand, and Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd. This paper will present the regional and local setting of the asbestos deposits, including the geology and nature of mineralization. In addition, the exploration methods used by Kennecott in the discovery and evaluation of these deposits will be outlined. Subsequent work by other companies will be mentioned, but not described in any detail. This subsequent work did not alter Kennecott's conclusions or produce any serious changes in the interpretation of geology and mineralization. The author acknowledges the contribution of the many employees of Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd., who have been involved in the project, particularly Ramon Farmer, N. G. Comer, and A. W. McConie, who were responsible for completion of field work and reporting on the project. The responsibility for the conclusions and interpretations of this report are solely that of the author and result from his involvement in discovery of the deposits and management of the exploration program.

Considerable controversy seems to exist over the extent and nature of information that should be provided in design-build type contracts. Much of this controversy may relate to the types of owners, ranging from private industry to state and federal agencies that are implementing design-build. Philosophies for the development of geotechnical information ranges from no information to a thorough investigation approaching that needed for final design. Several recent projects, such as the Channel Tunnel in Europe, Whittier Tunnel in Alaska, Tren Urbano in Puerto Rico, and Sound Transit in Seattle have taken varying approaches to providing and interpreting geotechnical information for bidders. The pros and cons of these various methods are discussed and assessed.

Historically, as for most reagents used in flotation, the wide-spread use of dialkyl dithiophosphinates as collectors in practical applications has preceded a detailed scientific understanding of how they work. Dialkyl dithiophosphinates are a technologically and commercially important class of collectors used in the flotation processing of Cu-Au, complex polymetallic, and precious metal ores. Plant usage has demonstrated that dithiophosphinates exhibit higher selectivity and flotation rates for Cu sulfides, galena, and precious metal values in the presence of other gangue sulfides, than the traditionally used collectors such as dialkyl dithiophosphates and xanthates. They also have an attractive health, safety, and environmental (HSE) profile. Although dithiophosphinates received little attention in the past in the flotation research community, recently, there has been significant interest in this chemistry, and numerous studies have been conducted to understand the fundamental interactions of dithiophosphinates with several base metal sulfides and precious metals. A critical overview of fundamental studies, laboratory ore flotation, and plant practice of dithiophosphinates is given in this paper. The findings from these studies are rationalized and explained by drawing on concepts and insights from coordination chemistry. A comparison between the interactions with various minerals and metals of dithiophosphinate and dithiophosphate analogues brings out some of the subtleties that seemingly minor changes in collector chemistry can make. The critical overview and analysis given here is useful in identifying gaps in knowledge regarding this important class of compounds. This in turn can provide a basis for the design of studies to advance our understanding of dithiophosphinate flotation performance.

In early June, Rio Tinto?s chief executive officer Tom Albanese said that he expected demand for iron ore, aluminum and copper to double in the next 15 years. Driven by global industrialization and urbanization, Albanese said during his company?s annual general meeting that to meet the demand in 2030, the additional supply required will be equivalent to replicating the iron ore output of Australia?s Pilbara region every five years, adding another aluminum production complex the size of Canada?s Saguenay every nine months and developing another copper mine the size of Escondida, in Chile, each year.

"Construction of large facilities underground in urban areas has many advantages. In order to show the advantages, a case study of the Norsborg metro depot in Stockholm Sweden has been made. The Norsborg metro depot will be the largest and most modern underground metro depot in northern Europe. The depot has been built in hard rock in an urban area with small impact on the environment and local residents. The paper describes how it is possible to build underground facilities in a cost efficient way and take care of the challenges regarding working environment that comes with locating a permanent working place underground. INTRODUCTION The Stockholm area is one of the five fastest growing regions in Europe and home to more than a fifth of Sweden's population on just two percent of Sweden's surface. The population is growing rapidly, with about 35,000 people per year and is expected to reach 2.6 million in 2030. In order to meet the development and enable continued growth, housing projects and expansion of infrastructure need to keep the same pace; this is an easy conclusion to make but much more difficult to realize in practice. The main challenge is to accomplish development in a sustainable and efficient manner, minimizing the use of resources and land. By constructing facilities underground more urban space will be made available for development and/or for greening of city centers. Considering sustainability factors such as land value in decision making for placing of structures or facilities, underground locations could become a first choice alternative. During 2015 and 2016, several major underground infrastructure projects in the city of Stockholm will start, including a 14 km sewage tunnel and an 18 km by-pass highway tunnel. Furthermore the Stockholm metro system is currently undergoing the largest expansion since the 1970’s, a 19 kilometers extension of the metro system including new trains and new stations is planned. During 2013 - 2015 Skanska Sweden took part in the construction of a new metro depot placed underground in the southern part of Stockholm; the Norsborg metro depot. This is a top modern urban underground facility that in 2017 will serve as depot for 17 new metro trains. The project was selected for “Outstanding Project of The Year” at the ITA Tunneling Awards 2015."

The 30th annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards Banquet and Fundraiser sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest (MFSW) will be held at the JW Marriott Star Pass Resort, Tucson, AZ on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012. Each year, one living inductee, two recipients of Medals of Merit and up to five honorees from mining history are chosen by the MFSW for their outstanding contributions to the mining industry. Gregory H. Boyce will be the guest of honor, featured speaker and inductee into the American Mining Hall of Fame. Boyce, chairman and chief executive office of Peabody Energy, is being honored for his leadership in the coal industry.

Ground falls in longwall gateroad entries remain a concern in modern longwall operations. The gateroads are subject to changing horizontal and vertical ground stress induced by longwall extraction. These stress changes can result in failure of the strata around an entry leading to large deformations of the entry roof, floor, and ribs. The gateroad support systems are required to control the failed strata while maintaining safe access to the longwall face and unimpeded ventilation. This paper presents research that was conducted to better understand the stability issues in gateroad excavations and to develop procedures for evaluating support and layout alternatives for longwall gateroads. Using the results of a field-monitoring program and numerical model analysis of case histories, a conceptual model of gateroad support needs was developed. The conceptual model formed the basis for developing a set of equations that can be used to estimate likely roof sag and support loading for given roof geology and longwall-induced loading conditions. The developed equations were used to compare predicted gateroad stability to field study results, showing satisfactory agreement. The calculation procedures are used to demonstrate their application in assessing support alternatives at a case study mine. It is concluded that the developed analysis procedures provide realistic assessments of likely ground stability and can be used to evaluate alternative gateroad support systems at operating longwall mines.

The National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) program since 1974 has been designed to accomplish a comprehensive coverage of the 48 conterminous States and Alaska to evaluate the total uranium resources of the USA. This resource base includes both ore reserves and potential resources. Techniques include airborne radiometric and magnetic surveys, by hydrogeochemical surveys, surface and subsurface geologic studies, and the application of improved geochemical exploration and resource assessment methods (Table 1). In brief review, the current status of each of the five basic NURE elements is as follows: In the Aerial Surveys, in the conterminous 48 states, the flying has been completed in 89 of the NTMS 10 x 2° NURE quadrangles, and is in progress in 39 more (Figure 1). Complete quadrangle data have already been open filed for 46 additional quadrangles, for a total of 174 for which data gathering is either complete or in progress. In Alaska, the flying is complete in 42 quadrangles, and quadrangle data have been open filed for 34 more, for a total of 76 (Figure 2).

Zinc ferrite ( ZnFe2O4) is a by-product of non-ferrous metal production and is considered a promising source of raw zinc. The most efficient way to extract zinc from its ferrite is via acidic extraction, specifically leaching by hydrochloric acid. A comparative study of synthetic zinc ferrite hydrochloric acid leaching in isopropanol, aqueous, and the mixed solvent was performed. Zinc ferrite was obtained by sintering a zinc and iron (III) oxide mixture. Crushed samples were subjected to leaching in 1 M HCl at 323, 333, and 353 K and pulp density of 1 g/100 mL. The dissolution of zinc and iron into solution in organic media reached 77% at 353 K, while in an aqueous environment this value was 65%. The activation energy of 70.0 kJ/ mol was found for the leaching process in an isopropanol environment, which is lower than that in an aqueous solution by 15%. The more efficient leaching effect of isopropanol is attributed to the lower dielectric constant of the alcohol which increases the affinity of chloride anions for zinc and iron cations at leaching.

"With seven new applications for plans of work for exploration in the international Seabed Area approved by the Council during its twentieth session of the International Seabed Authority, 26 total approvals have been made by the Council up to date. Among them, three contracts were made with COMRA. On 8 August 2014, China Minmetals Corporation submitted another application to the Authority for approval of a plan of work for exploration for polymetallic nodules in the Area, which is also sponsored by the Government of the People’s Republic of China.China is one of the main contributors to the international seabed regime. The Presentation will describe China’s activities in the Area, such as exploration, technology development, environmental protection and policy making.JIAOLONG is a submersible with capacity of 7000 meters. JIAOLONG’s sea trials were carefully made in 4 years, from 2009 through 2012 and it successfully dove to a depth of 7062m in June 2012 at Mariana trench. A so called "Test Application Phase" started thereafter, and is planned to last for 3-4 years. Two cruises and 4 legs have already been made since then. A wide-range of findings were obtained during dives in South China Sea, and in COMRA’s Exploration Contract Areas for polymetallic nodules and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts. This presentation will reveal the colorful findings."

"Location. The copper mines of Michigan are all in the northern part of that state on the Keweenaw Peninsula, which extends from the (Michigan) mainland for about seventy miles northeasterly toward the middle of Lake Superior. The mines occur in a belt or zone occupying the central portion of the peninsula from end to end.. The most productive mines for many years past have been those located not far from the city of Houghton in' the central part of the zone, in a section extending about ten miles southwest of Houghton and fifteen miles northeast. The most important mines in order of location, from the northeast to south¬west, are the following: Mohawk, Ahmeek, Allouez, North Kearsarge, Wolverine, South Kearsarge, Centennial, Calumet. and Hecla, Osceola, Franklin, Quincy, Hancock, Isle Royale, Superior, Baltic, Trimountain, and Champion. The first three named are in Keweenaw county and all of the others are in Houghton county. Still farther to the southwest are the Lake, Mass, Adventure, Michigan, Victoria, and White Pine mines. These are in Ontonagon county.History. The exploitation of these copper mines extends back into prehistoric times. There is little evidence that the American Indians carried on mining operations in this region in the period shortly before the advent of white men, but there is abundant evidence that the ancestors of the Indians, •or some earlier inhabitants of the region, carried on primitive mining operations. For example, Mr. S. O. Knapp, Agent of the Minne¬sota Mining Company, in the winter of 1847-48, made the first discovery of prehistoric mining. "This paper presents some studies on recovering valuable elements from Chinese coal by-products, including coal combustion fly ash, stone coal ash, and coal flotation tailings. Both commercialized technologies and economic potential recovery methods are described in this study. Magnetically stabilized air-dense medium fluidized bed separation, tribo-electrostatic separation, froth flotation, and hydrometallurgical methods are discussed in recovering various valuable elements in Chinese coal by-products from different coalfields. These valuable elements include iron, carbon, aluminum, rare earth elements, lithium, gallium, germanium, uranium, titanium, scandium, silicon, vanadium and phosphorus, etc. The ultimate goal is to fully utilize all valuable elements in coal by-product. Each component within coal by-product should be efficiently segregated to its highest value. INTRODUCTION Coal is mainly composed of energy-producing elements carbon and hydrogen. In addition to these elements, coal usually contains many other valuable elements, including iron, aluminum, silicon, rare earth elements, lithium, gallium, germanium, vanadium, uranium, titanium, scandium, and phosphorus, etc. These coal-associated elements are significantly enriched in coal combustion by-product fly ash because of majority of main components, carbon and hydrogen elements, being removed. Table 1 provides the chemical composition range of the main elements oxides in 12 Chinese fly ash samples collected from coal power plants located in Northeast China, Northwest China, Southwest China, and Southeast China. It can be seen from Table 1 that the major mineral components of different ashes are similar, but the bulk chemistry of different fly ashes may vary widely due to the changes of ratios of the mineral components in different coals. The major mineral components in various Chinese coal combustion fly ash are silicates, iron oxides, and unburned carbon."

As the basis for the State of Minnesota's Regional Copper-Nickel Study environmental evaluation, hypothetical mine models were developed ranging in ore capacity from 5.35 to 20.00 x 106 mtpy. Open pit and underground mining operations were defined utilizing conventional methods of ore extraction. Processing of the copper-nickel sulfide material involved conventional bulk flotation of the valuable minerals, with maximum water recycle And tailing disposal. Flash smelting and electrolytic refining of the concentrate resulted in 0.10 x 106 mtpy copper plus nickel metal, plus associated cobalt and precious metals. Variations in model parameters allowed environmental trade-offs to be identified.

The "Old Reliable" four million pound blast in March of 1972 marked the opening, as far as is known, of serious efforts to commercialize the In Situ concept. That was a coyote shot, and it was followed by three blasts at McAlester Fuel's "Zonia" operation which were surface hole shots. As the only individual who had a principal part in all four shots, it seems to be appropriate to present experiences in the developments and evolutions of the in Situ method of ore extraction. Some of the problems will be described, along with proposals for management of such projects in the future.
