Central Alaska contains a wide variety of pre-, syn-, and post -accretionary mineral deposits that are related to the growth and evolution of the north-west North American continental margin. Withinpre-accretionary terranes, the Devonian-Carboniferous, carbonate platform-hosted MVT zinc-lead deposits of the Kandik and Reef Ridge districts in central Alaska, and the Devonian-Mississippian volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) polymetallic deposits of the Bonnifield, and Delta mineral belts of eastern Interior Alaska have received the most exploration interest to date. Syn-accretionary rift related, mafic and ultramafic sill swarms and zoned plutons of the Kluane-Nikolai igneous belt are currently being explored for Ni-Cu-Co-PGE deposits. Syn-accretionary granitoid complexes in the PurcellMountains, Illinois Creek, and Sitylemenkat areas have been explored for uranium-REE-gold, and tin-silver mineralization respectivelyPost-accretionary granitoid intrusions and associated volcanic fields that range in age from mid-Cretaceous to early Tertiary contain significant gold-silver-polymetallic resources in the East Central Alaska, Hogatza, and Kuskokwim Mineral belts. Collectively the three main post-accretionary plutonic/volcanic belts of central Alaska are part of the Tintina Gold Province, where exploration since 1990has identified about 848 tonnes gold.

Falconbridge, a major base metal producer in the Sudbury Basin of Ontario, identified a need to find a safe and cost effective replacement for welded-wire mesh used to support loose ground during underground nickel mining. Falconbridge took a methodical approach to the concept of a spray-on liner as a screen replacement proving the strength characteristics of the liner as a safe, cost effective, and suitable method of supporting ground. Compact, hydraulic mixing and spraying equipment have been developed and are in use at the Fraser mine. The Tekflex material has been approved as a wire-mesh replacement and has been in use since November1998.

The mining industry, like most other industries, has had a difficult couple of years. What are your thoughts on the industry?s direction in the next few years? I am bullish on our industry. There is no question in my mind that the quality of life we enjoy today is largely a result of our past successes in the minerals and mining sector. I am equally certain that the sustainability of that quality of life and the aspirations of the rest of the world to attain that same level of lifestyle will depend hugely on our future successes and will be the driver for our industry to continue to excel and prosper. Surely, there are going to be challenges along the way. These challenges are not only from the public, regulators and various governing bodies, but also from our industry?s own self regulating efforts. However, we have demonstrated throughout the past several decades that we have the capability to meet these challenges head on and come out ahead.

The mining industry in northern Ontario is known mostly for its huge nickel deposits. Inco’s and Falconbridge’s nickel mines in the Sudbury Basin are the best known. And with nickel prices being what they are, interest in the region continues. And how. Inco and Falconbridge want to merge. Teck Cominco wants Inco, but without Falconbridge. Xstrata made a hostile bid for Falconbridge, which Falconbridge rejected. And, in June, Phelps Dodge trumped them all when it made an approximately US$40-billion friendly offer for Inco and Falconbridge in a two-part deal.

Enhanced gravity separation appears to be one of the most promising methods for processing all types of <200-µm coal feeds and tailings. Systems based on this technology are reviewed, and the results of investigations based on C900 Multi-Gravity Separator tests conducted to assess the treatment of <200-µm, extremely difficult-to-wash coal settling pond tailings are presented. Multi-Gravity Separator processing tests of ultra-fine tailings with a high clay particle size content (22.6% <10 µm and 60.1% <40 µm) and a 69.56% ash content show that this material can be effectively treated after desliming (<10 µm) of clay-size particles to produce a coal with a 20.6% ash at a separator combustible material recovery of 69.3%. Desliming is shown to be critical in reducing coal ash content and combustible material recovery. Similar improvements are anticipated in the recovery and separation pro-cesses for other enhanced gravity separation systems from the desliming of feeds. Although not a conventional form of treating Multi-Gravity Separator data, the existence of well-defined polynomial relationships based on the product of drum shake amplitude and shake frequency relative to product coal recovery, product ash content and yields at varying wash water flows is demonstrated. Low-amplitude and intermediate- to high-frequency bed agitation are shown to produce optimum ash reduction results.

Groundwater inflows during construction pose one of the greatest risks to the successful completion of tunnel projects. Inflows can result in safety concerns, difficulty in mining and ground support, impact sensitive environmental habitats, create surface settlement and increase costs. Adequately planned pre-excavation grouting programs benefit both the Owner and Contractor in reducing risks and controlling project costs and potential schedule delays. This paper outlines strategic guidelines for assessment of site conditions for pre-excavation grouting hard rock tunnels. It also describes the design of pre-excavation grouting programs with respect to project requirements.

The attapulgite industry saw a year of solid growth after a weaker 2003. Demand was up between 5 percent and 6 percent driven by almost all of the key markets. Construction continued to show record new housing demand, assisted by continued low interest rates. That drove strong growth in construction related markets like coatings, tape joint compounds and other construction materials applications. The agricultural markets rebounded modestly to increase sales for suspension fertilizers, animal feeds and pesticide carriers. Oil drilling also showed strong growth due to high oil and gas prices. Sales to molecular sieve applications grew due to petrochemical and construction demand. The export markets were assisted by further depreciation of the dollar. The only weak area was in nonagricultural granular sorbents, where other sorbent materials continued to dominate.

"Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) occurs in many countries around the world, and provides a source of livelihood to many impoverished local people in areas where it occurs. This paper reports the role of female participants and reasons why they engage in ASM. Field visits were made to 12 ASM sites located in the Tarkwa Mining District of Ghana to conduct interviews with male diggers and female participants. It was observed that over 100 women between the ages of 18 and 50 participate in ASM for survival. They engage in ASM largely because they have no alternative employable skills and income sources. These female participants depend on ASM to sustain the lives of their dependents. INTRODUCTION Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) conventionally involves use of rudimentary tools (such as picks, shovels, chisels and hammers) to exploit precious minerals and metals from the ground. It has been a major source of livelihood to many impoverished local people for more than a century. In many instances, it is the only source of income to indigenous people who have no alternative employable skills. The World Bank estimated that more than 100 million people around the world benefit from ASM which largely occurs in developing countries in Asia, Africa, Oceania, and South and Central America (World Bank, 2013). Cobalt, which is used in lithium-ion batteries to power cellphones, laptop computers, and electric vehicles, is largely produced by artisanal miners in Congo (The Washington Post, 2016). In Sudan, ASM is a significant contributor to the national economy, accounting for about 85% of total gold extracted yearly from 2010 to 2015 (Ibrahim, 2015). Also, according to the Embassy of Sierra Leone in Washington DC, USA, 90% of mineral export in Sierra Leone can be attributed to thriving artisanal diamond mining in the country (Sierra Leone Embassy, 2016). In Ghana, the ASM sector was recognized by government as a multimillion industrial activity, and through a series of initiatives, it was legalized by promulgating the Small Scale Gold Mining Law of 1989 (PNDCL 218). Presently, artisanal mining is widely practiced in two forms: licensed (registered), sometimes referred to as formal ASM, and unregistered (informal or illegal) operations, popularly called “galamsey”, a name believed to have been derived from “gather and sell” by ancient miners who could not communicate in the English language with European/British miners. The ASM sector in Ghana, like other countries, has seen a rise in female participation over the years. A report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) indicated that women account for about 15% of total workforce in ASM in Ghana, and up to 50% in Africa (ILO, 1999). Other researchers have also estimated women participants in ASM to be between 30 and 70% in Africa (Hinton et al., 2003a; Hinton et al. 2003b; Hilson, 2002). Presently, there is no reliable data from Ghanaian authorities on number of females engaged in ASM. However, data obtained from 15 ASM sites suggest that at least 40% of the employees are women. It is expected that a similar trend exists across ASM operations in Ghana."

Every year, severe injuries and fatalities occur when a miner is struck or pinned by a continuous mining machine, shuttle car, scoop or other piece of mobile mining equipment. Proximity detection systems offer a means to prevent these types of injuries and fatalities by sensing the presence of a miner and disabling machine motion. Although hundreds of these systems are installed and in use in operating coal mines, the influence that coal has on the electromagnetic fields associated with these systems has never been rigorously quantified. NIOSH researchers have conducted tests to measure whether the proximity of coal has a significant influence on a popular design of proximity detection system. The system tested utilizes a low frequency magnetic field generator that would be mounted on the mining machine. At the NIOSH Safety Research Coal Mine in Pittsburgh, researchers measured the performance of a simplified proximity detection system of this type first on the surface then underground at varying distances from a coal face. Analysis of these measurements shows that the presence of coal does not have a measurable impact. While benchmarking the integrated finite-volume code MULTIFLO against the analytical solution of Philip et al. (1989) for cylindrical underground openings, we found numerical simulation of dripping threshold flux consistently higher than the analytical solution for both rectangular and unstructured grids. The magnitude of error is proportional to the alpha parameter characterizing capillarity. This may bias estimates of repository performance towards non-conservatism.

Traditional fine grinding mills in mineral processing relied on the use of steel medium for particle size reduction. The successful development of the Isa Mill(a horizontal stirred mill with 3000 litres of net chamber volume and 1120 kW rated motor power)adopted a novel product separator design that has led to a major revision of medium use in fine grinding. The Isa Mill separator has also successfully operated with a wide variety of medium types such as silica sands, river gravel, smelter slag, run-of-mine ore fractions and steel shots, with size ranges from 0.5 to 10 mm. A great flexibility of the Isa Mill operations has been achieved for processing a feed as coarse as 120 um to a product as fine as 5 µm. This paper discusses the performance of two inert grinding media used in the Isa Mills in Mount Isa Mines of Australia for processing galena and sphalerite bearing ores to below 10 microns. They are the copper reverberatory furnace slag (CRFS)and the heavy medium plant rejects (HMPR). A methodology was also demonstrated for comparing the medium performance and for scaling up the Isa Mills from a 1.5-litre laboratory batch mill to a full scale 3000-litre mill.

The underground construction for the Phase I Combined Sewer Overflow(CSO) Project is on an impressive scale by any measure, appearing more so in a midsize city like Providence, RI. The Narragansett Bay Commission recently completed $350 mil-lion in construction to improve the water quality in Narragansett Bay. This project included a number of serious challenges, delays, and disputes. Looking back on this complex project completed within budget, it is hard to consider the work as anything other than a success. Along the way, this outcome did not always appear certain.

ABSTRACT Health and safety indicators help mine sites predict the likelihood of an event, advance initiatives to control risks, and track progress. Although useful to encourage organizations to work together, executing such risk assessments comes with challenges. This paper focuses on one trona mine’s experience in the development and implementation of a field level risk assessment program to help its entire organization understand and manage risk to an acceptable level. Through a transformational process of ongoing support and communication, Solvay Green River fostered a culture of trust and safety grounded in risk assessment, safety interactions, and hazard correction. The application of consistent risk assessment (RA) tools was critical to create a participatory workforce that not only talks about safety, but actively identifies energies that contribute to hazards and potential incidents. In this paper, reflecting on the mine’s process of RA implementation provides examples of likely barriers that sites may encounter when trying to document and manage risks. As discussed, consistent efforts to establish a participatory risk management program are worth the initial struggle to ultimately reduce incidents. INTRODUCTION Work-related health and safety (H&S) incidents often account for lost days on the job, contributing to organizational/financial and personal/social burdens [1-2]. Accompanying research demonstrates that risk and ambiguity around risk contribute to almost every decision that individuals make throughout the day [3-4]. In response, understanding individual attitudes toward risk has been unquestionably linked to predicting H&S behavior [5]. Although an obvious need exists to identify more comprehensive methods to assess and mitigate potential hazards, some argue that risk management is not given adequate attention in occupational H&S [6]. Additionally, research suggests that a current lack of knowledge, skills, and motivation are primary barriers to mitigating workplace risks [3-6]. Therefore, enhancing knowledge and awareness around risk-based decisions, including individuals’ abilities to understand, measure, and assign levels of risk to determine an appropriate response, is increasingly important in hazardous environments to predict and prevent incidents. This paper focuses on tailored approaches to field level risk assessment (FLRA), measurement, and common barriers to participating in such activities. The authors use a trona mine in Green River, Wyoming, as a case study to illustrate how the organization overcame widespread and site-specific challenges to implement a proactive risk management program. By discussing the mine’s tailored FLRA program, this case study contributes to the literature by first, providing examples of critical components that need to be in place to ensure successful risk management and second, context for continuous quality improvement that can foster a higher level of trust and empowerment on site."

Coal production in the United States in 2007 totaled 1.03 Gt (1,145.6 million st), according to preliminary data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) (Ta-ble 1). This is a decrease of 1.5 percent, or 15.6 Mt (17.2 million st) from the 2006 record level of 1.05 Gt (1,162.7 million st). Although coal production declined in 2007, U.S. total coal consumption increased for the year. Coal consumption in 2007 in the electric power sector was higher by 1.9 percent, while coking coal consumption decreased by 1.1 percent and the other industrial sector declined by 5 percent. (Note: all percentage change calculations are done at the short-tons level.) U.S. coal exports were significantly higher in 2007, while coal imports remained at about the same level. Total coal stocks increased slightly during the year, as some consumers continued to rebuild their stockpiles that had been seriously depleted in 2005 due to transportation issues. The growth in coal consumption during the year was primarily a result of the weather-related increases in the demand for electricity in 2007. Preliminary data show that total generation in the electric power sector (electric utilities and independent power producers) in the United States grew in 2007. Coal-based generation also increased, resulting in a 17.9-Mt (19.8-million-st) increase in coal consumed in the electric power sector. Coal use in the nonelectricity sector decreased by 3.8 percent to 74.7 Mt (82.4 million st). In the international markets in 2007, U.S. coal exports increased to levels not seen in recent years while coal imports were mostly static. U.S. coal exports totaled 53.7 Mt (59.2 million st), an increase of 8.6 Mt (9.5 million st) above 2006. Coal imports in 2007 ended the year at 32.9 Mt (36.3 million st), 91 kt (100,000 st) higher than in 2006. Coal prices in 2007 were split, with most domestic prices higher for the year while the international prices were overall lower. Predictive maintenance technologies including vibration analysis, tribology, infrared thermography, ultrasonic detection, and electrical measurements have been applied to large electric mining shovels. The predictive program was initiated on the P&H Model 2300 and 4100 electric shovels. The utilization of these technologies has shown the potential for improving electric mining shovel availability and minimizing maintenance costs. Predictive technologies provide the tools to assess machinery condition. Availability is enhanced by the condition based planning of component replacement. Maintenance costs are minimized by focusing resources through condition based prioritization.

The prevention of acid mine drainage (AMD) in situ is more attractive than down-gradient treatment alternatives that do not involve source control. AMD source control can be achieved by shifting the microbial activity in the sulfidic rock from pyrite oxidation to anaerobic heterotrophic activity. This is achieved by adding biodegradable organic carbon amendments to the sulfidic rock. This technique was applied to an abandoned coal mine pool in Pennsylvania. The pool had a pH of 3.0 to 3.5. Following treatment, near-neutral pH and decreased effluent heavy metal concentrations were achieved. In situ bioremediation by the enhancement of bacterial iron and sulfate reduction is a promising technology for AMD prevention.

The Gumuskoy silver mine, owned by the Etibank, in the province of Kutahya, Turkey, has been operating since 1987 with primary, secondary and tertiary crushers, and two parallel single stage ball mill circuits. Continuing problems with crushing and feeding of the ore to the ball mills, because of the moisture retaining and sticky nature of the ore, prompted an investigation into the possibility of converting the grinding circuit to an autogenous or semiautogenous grinding circuit. This would remove the bottleneck associated with the secondary and tertiary crushing. At the same time the target feedrate is to be raised from 140 t/h to 175 t/h. This paper demonstrates the response of five ore types, and blends of ore types in an onsite pilot plant test program, and also suggests how the variations can be handled in a SAG mill/ball mill circuit incorporating just one of the present ball mills.

Independent of the method chosen to forecast production, an accurate method to project metal extraction is needed in order to accommodate leach cycles that exceed leach data on hand and thus be able to accurately forecast production. Metal extraction data must be developed for each ore type identified in the deposit in order to apply the correct rate of leaching when a specific ore is being treated. Curve fitting is used to model the rate of disengagement of metal into the pregnant solution. This paper provides a description of a curve fitting algorithm developed by Mr. John T. Bartlett, inventor of the METSIM™ process simulation program. A methodology is provided by which the metallurgical data developed is evaluated to determine if accurate projections may be made from the data. A criteria has been developed to help determine when a column experiment may be terminated.
