Today?s modern mining operations have literally dozens of applications and systems generating data whose information very often, are not crossed or centralized for operational decisions. In remote locations, the information and situation awareness is typically limited to the location itself. In addition, access to that information is limited to a small, select group of personnel that have received training on how to interpret the results. When the situation affects another area of the mine then information is relayed to the applicable areas involved. Few workers have time to analyze the situation thoroughly, to see how it affects the mines symbiotic relationship within all areas of production. If the capability to correlate and measure events and situations that affect your overall key performance indicators are not in place, the opportunity to identify process improvement becomes more difficult.

Smooth roll crushers are widely used as secondary crushers, operating most effectively when set for size reductions in a ratio between 3 or 4 to I. The feed supplied to these units varies from 13 to 102 mm in size and the product obtained ranges from 13 mm to about 20 mesh. Smooth roll crushers produce very few fines and absolutely no oversize. The diameter otfhe rolls varies with the clearance between them, feed size, and the coefficient of internal friction ofmaterial to be crushed, Detailed calculations of this relationship may be found in Unit operations of Chemical Engineering, (McCabe, W. The Apex Tunnel is part of the Southern Nevada Water Authority?s proposed Clark, Lincoln, and White Pine Counties Groundwater Development Project. The project is intended to develop unused Nevada groundwater for meeting the water needs of Southern Nevada and would involve over 322 km (200 mi) of water transmission facilities. The Apex Tunnel, as currently conceived by ongoing planning and environmental analyses, would extend 2804 m (9,200 ft) through a structurally complex terrain of Paleozoic carbonate rocks and younger basin fill deposits and will traverse both public and private lands. Several faults cross the tunnel study area, juxtaposing rocks of varying lithology and degree of folding, and creating intervals of differing rock conditions along the tunnel alignment. This paper discusses how the geotechnical program was developed to be flexible and allow for rapid implementation of revisions based on new knowledge that became available during program execution, resulting in more effective decision making and enhanced value from the geologic investigation during the planning phase of the project.

There will be about 300 raise boring machines used worldwide by late 1981, attesting to the acceptance of this drilling system by the mining and construction industries. Over the past few years, many articles have cited the advantages of raise boring: •improved safety; •faster completion of the raise; •elimination of sublevels; •cost reductions; •better structural characteristics of the opening; •labor reduction; and •noise abatement. The relative importance of each advantage varies from mine to mine. When analyzing the total economics of raising, each advantage must be considered. The factors having the most effect on economics are fixed costs, direct costs, and comparative savings versus conventional methods.

A damaged outlet pipe beneath Lenihan Dam has restricted reservoir discharges, severely constraining the owner?s groundwater recharge program. The solution, a new outlet pipeline through the dam?s right abutment, includes an approximately12.2-m-deep (40-ft-deep) shaft and 618.7-m-long, 4.3-m-diameter (2,030-ft long, 14-ft-diameter) tunnel mined in Franciscan melange composed of hard blocks of rock and soft clayey matrix. Alternating road header with drill and blast operations and using steel ribs and shotcrete have proven a flexible combination for handling the variable ground conditions. Excavating the shaft and connecting it to the tunnel require lowering the reservoir for five months, during which time careful construction sequencing and use of a tunnel plug eliminate the risk of an uncontrolled discharge.

Na-feldspar (albite) and K-feldspar (microcline or orthoclase) are major feldspar minerals with identical crystal structures and physicochemical properties. Flotation appears to be a unique method of separating these minerals. Fundamental studies on amine/feldspar system in the presence of monovalent salts showed that separation of these feldspar minerals by flotation is possible at certain concentration of monovalent salts in HF medium and natural pH. A comparison between natural pH and HF medium indicates that the latter provides a better selectivity at the expense of higher collector requirement. A general mechanism for both systems involving an ion exchange between the uncommon ions and adsorption of the common ions is proposed to be responsible for creating differences in the charge of albite and microcline unto which amine adsorbs.

While tunneling in Europe has been a tradition for centuries, many companies and countries have embraced tunnel innovation with considerable vigor and creativity. Indeed, local needs and site conditions have provided the initiative for improved means, methods, materials and equipment to complete progressively more challenging projects. Many recently completed tunnels have expanded tunneling technology and contributed to the development of highly specialized and productive equipment ? such as the mixed-mode tunnel boring ma-chine (TBM) presently in operation at the SOCATOP A- [ ] 86 road tunnel and the high-pressure slurry TBMs for the Westerschelde Tunnel in the Netherlands and Hollandsas near Malmo, Sweden. This paper describes some of the key technologies employed by European tunnel builders and designers including the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), advanced earth pressure-balanced (EPB) machines, pres-sure-faced (slurry) tunneling machines as well as ?hybrid? or mixed-mode TBMs. While these tunneling methods and equipment generally involve significant equipment investment, they may also involve highly trained, experienced and specialized tunneling and support crews as well as materials and tools specifically developed to supplement or complement tunneling performance. For example, mechanized pipe arch placement substantially improves ground support measures and NATM advance and on larger tunnel cross-sections.

Introduction Coal has always been China's predominant energy resource. The country ranks among the three richest countries in coal reserves in the world, next to the US and the Soviet Union. According to China's Ministry of Coal Industry (MCI), coal accounted for about 72% of the total national energy consumption. Despite efforts to increase the output of oil and hydropower, coal is predicted to remain dominant on the energy scene by increasing its share to 77% by the turn of the century. To match the rapid growth in the agricultural and industrial sectors, MCI has targeted the coal industry to double coal output from 600 Mt/a (660 million stpy) in 1981 to 1.2 Gt/a (1.3 billion stpy) by the year 2000. How is this goal to be achieved? According to MCI, it will be accomplished by: • building new underground and surface mines with a total output of 400 Mt/a (440 million stpy); • increasing the output of existing state-controlled mines from the present 344 Mt/a (368 million stpy) to 400 Mt/a (440 million stpy); and • developing and increasing the output of small, local mines run by province, county, and production brigade from the present 276 Mt/a (304 million stpy) to 400 Mt/a (440 million stpy). Building new underground and surface mines New underground coal mines will be developed in areas where the coal industry has already made headway and infrastructures currently exist. This is to optimize hardpressed capital spending on investment. Ten existing coal production bases were selected in nine different provinces that met these requirements. The underground mines scheduled to be constructed in stages at he existing coal production bases will have a total output of 200 Mt/a (220 million stpy) by the end of the century. Regarding surface mines, four mines in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and one in Shanxi province have been earmarked for construction during the same period. By the year 2000, these surface mines are expected to produce 200 Mt/a (220 million stpy). Foreign equipment, machinery, and surface mine stripping technology were all involved in different degrees in the development of the five new surface mines. Some have signed joint venture agreements. Occidental Petroleum Corp. is in a joint venture with China in developing Ping-shou's 15 Mt/a (16.5 million stpy) Antaibao No. 1 open-pit. The Shentou power station, situated nearby, is anticipated to consume 3.2 Mt/a (3.5 million stpy) of the coal it produces. Some is designated for export. Increasing output There are 554 state-controlled mines that have been in operation since before 1980. They produce 344 Mt/a (379 million stpy). To increase capacity, MCI has laid out some guidelines. • Coal prospecting near existing mines must be given top priority and intensified so that workable reserves can be increased. This would lengthen the mines' useful life. • Many mines and slopes that were constructed during the 1950s are very small and densely populated. German manufacturer DBT signed a contract to supply a sixth automated-plow long-wall system to Shenyang Coal in Liaoning province in northeastern China. This most recent order occurred just weeks after DBT signed a contract to deliver a fifth automated-plow longwall system to Datong Coal in Shanxi province. The plow will go into service at Shenyang Coal’s Hongyang Mine. Mining conditions at the mine, coupled with DBT’s advanced automated-plow technology, means that the system has the potential to become one of the world’s most productive thin-seam longwalls.

Introduction The February and April 1984 issues of MINING ENGINEERING have already provided introduction to the long-range planning efforts of the Society of Mining Engineers (SME). These efforts are intended to provide the basis for effectively maintaining and improving the Society in the face of the changes that are besetting the mineral industry. This requires that SME recognize what changes are occurring and determine how these will impact the membership. Then a plan must be developed and implemented so that the Society successfully meets the challenges of the next decade. The Board of Directors has charged the Long Range Planning Commission with the responsibility for meeting these goals. This article provides a summary of the work done by the Management and Organization Committee of the Long-Range Planning Commission. This committee's task was to analyze the Society's current organizational structure and management process. Then a set of recommended improvements was to be developed. In doing this, the Committee has been careful to operate under that popular axiom, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Thus, changes were not proposed simply for the sake of change, but only where the present system appeared to be less effective than desired. Bases For Action The Committee began by establishing a set of premises about SME and its membership. These premises provided the bases for subsequent actions and recommendations by the Committee. Highlights from the premises included: • The Society should be run on a business-like basis. However, its "business" is that of a not-for-profit scientific, technical, and educational public institution. SME enables professionals involved in or associated with the mineral industry to serve the public purpose of benefitting mankind. • The Society operates as a national (US) organization with transnational (worldwide) interests. It recognizes its obligation to make its goods and services available to minerals professionals throughout the world. In addition, the Society recognizes its obligation to translate technology for the "lay" public, who then also become users of its goods and services. • The Society's Board of Directors is the policy-making body of SME and has final approval of all programs. These responsibilities will become greater when the Society becomes a separate corporation. • At present, the Society provides the following goods and services: publications, meetings/programming/short courses, academic education support, information dissemination - internal and external, and individual member services. • Planning is an ongoing process. It is best performed on a decentralized basis. That is, each major service category should have a responsible group authorized to conduct planning for that category, subject to the Society's master plan and the Board's approval. • The Society is privileged to have highly qualified and motivated members who volunteer their time and efforts on behalf of the Society. The best of these volunteers should rise to the highest positions of leadership - the Presidency of the Society and Institute (AIME). • The Sooiety is strongly committed to the protection and promotion of the history, traditions, and identity of AIME and the use of AIME as the unifying forum for the Constituent Societies. Identification of Potential Problems Once the premises about the Society and its membership were well in hand, the committee began examining the many facets of SME's organizational structure and management process. This was done in order to identify problems or potential problems in these areas. After considerable review and discussion, 10 areas of potential concern were called out for more detailed study and possible recommendations for improvement. These 10 areas include: • A lack of continuity at the Board level and among officers due to the established turnover policy. • A series of subboards that serve, by practice, to diffuse management authority and accountability, rather than enhance it. • A question as to whether the dissemination of information has been adequately planned, organized, and staffed. • An apparent illogical divisional organization. Two divisions are discipline oriented and two are commodity oriented. • A regional organization that does not adequately fulfill its purposes. • Uncertainties about the per-

Thiobacillus ferrooxidans bacteria were used in this work to study the effect of bacterial adaptation on the bioleaching of three iron-bearing sulfide minerals, namely, pyrite, chalcopyrite and arsenopyrite. The change in the pH during the bioleaching process was observed and the mechanism of the bacterial action were discussed. It was found that bacterial adaptation prior to bioleaching, enhanced the degree of sulfide leaching by 2-4 folds over that of non-adapted bacteria. A1 so the bacterial activity was enhanced by 2-4.8 folds. The pH of leaching solutions was decreased by the increase in both adaptation period and bioleaching time. It was also concluded that the mechanisms of bioleaching of iron-bearing sulfide minerals involved both the direct and indirect bacterial action simultaneously.

The Rasmussen Ridge phosphate mine is owned by Agrium CPO and operated by a unit of Washington Group International. The mine, located in southeastern Idaho, received the Idaho Inter-Agency Reclamation Award from the Idaho Department of Lands. The phosphate mine, located northeast of Soda Springs, was honored for “Excellence in Ongoing Operations, Soft Rock Mines over 75Acres.” Charles Ross is Agrium CPO’s plant manager. He said, “We are honored to receive this award. This recognizes the commitment and dedication of our employees toward the protection of the environment. I am really proud of the people that work at the mine.”

The extractive industries addition to the International Valuation Standards (IVS) is scheduled for publication in the next edition of the IVS book in January 2005. This will provide guidance for valuation of minerals and petroleum industry assets of all types for all appraisal uses. It will provide asset valuation support to the International Financial Reporting Standards for the stock markets of the world, and a global umbrella standard which can be supplemented for local needs by institutes and regulators. This paper discusses implementation of the IVS within the minerals industry and important issues that the industry should confront.

An assessment of U.S. western hardrock miners? noise exposures was conducted as part of a multi-year National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) survey of noise exposures in each sector of the mining industry. Noise from selected mining equipment and operator noise exposures were measured, analyzed and tabulated for dissemination to the participating sites and are being used to direct NIOSH research and interventions to address the greatest noise hazards. Eighty-two noise dosimeter measurements were obtained, along with time-motion studies as the miners operated hardrock mining machines. Of the operators, 96% had daily noise doses that exceeded the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration?s (MSHA) permissible exposure level. The average gold miner dosages while operating the following equipment were: haul trucks - 261%, load-haul-dumps (LHDs) - 235%, single boom drills - 221%, bolters - 214% and dual boom drills - 163%. The worst exposure level was a silver miner with a daily dose of 873%. Time-motion data showed that this miner?s exposure accumulated most rapidly while operating a jackleg drill. These results will be used to help prioritize noise control development by NIOSH and other partners.

Some large-scale mining companies in Ghana have adopted proactive management strategies in dealing with small-scale (galamsey) miners who have encroached on their concessions. This has been mainly achieved by ceding portions of the concessions held by the companies to the Minerals Commission of Ghana for licensing to the small-scale miners. This development has created an amicable relationship between the mining companies concerned and the galamsey miners in their host community. Ghana’s small-scale gold and diamond industry The small-scale gold and diamond mining industry in Ghana has existed for many centuries as an informal sector. Since the regularization of the activities of small-scale mining in 1989, two types of small-scale miners have emerged — legal and illegal.

The roasting and gas handling circuits at Goldstrikes' new Roasting Facility incorporate proven technologies in a unique combination. During the design of the plant, every effort was made to utilize the best available unit operations from the perspective of capital, environment and operating costs. The roaster utilizes Freeport-McMoRan whole ore roasting technology with pure oxygen as the oxidizing gas. This process was chosen based on its proven application on Carlin-type carbonaceous ores. An extensive gas cleaning train follows the roaster and comprises direct cooling, dust scrubbing, indirect cooling, wet electrostatic precipitation, mercury scrubbing, SO2 scrubbing, CO incineration and NOX reduction.

A number of important international events took place in 2001 in the development and evolution of mineral valuation standards internationally. In Canada, the CIMVal Committee released a draft discussion paper for public and industry comment on principles to guide the development of the planned Canadian mineral property valuation standard. The International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) received comments on its Extractive Industries Issues Paper. IASB will decide whether the financial statements of public mining and petroleum companies will be allowed to provide the value of mineral and petroleum assets on a current value basis instead of an historic cost basis. The author led the Extractive Industries Task Force of the International Valuation Standards Committee (IVSC) in developing its submission to IASB. IVSC intends to develop an extractive industries valuation section for its International Valuation Standards, which could support the planned IASB standard. In Australia, AusIMM has carried out an in-depth review of its highly regarded VALMIN Code. The AusIMM's MICA subdivision organized the VALMIN ‘01 Conference in Sydney, Australia, with a range of international and current issues papers published in the VALMIN ‘01 book. Considerable support for the IVSC initiative was evident at this conference. The results of the review of the extractive industries submissions to the IASB are expected to be released in early 2002. The CMMI Congress in Cairns, Australia in May 2002 is likely to prove to be an important forum for continued discussion of the development and implementation of international standards and qualifications for mineral valuation. The outcomes and implications of these events are discussed.

The Devil?s Slide portion of Highway 1 between Pacifica and Montara is often closed due to the instability of the adjacent slopes. Following many years of public input and careful evaluation of alternatives, Devil?s Slide will be by-passed via two inland tunnels, providing a safe, dependable highway between Pacifica and Montara. For the twin tunnels, each 9m diameter tube will accommodate only one traffic lane. Each tunnel tube will accommodate a 3.6 meter roadway, 0.6 meter and 2.4 meter inside and outside shoulders respectively, and 1.2 meter walkways on each side. Cross passages will connect the bores at about 120 meter intervals and jet fans will provide tunnel ventilation. The twin tunnels are approximately 1,250 meter long and 9 meter wide. Excavation will progress from south to north using tunneling techniques that rely on inherent rock strength for support known as the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). Both tunnels will be excavated at the same time, one tunnel face approximately 40 meters ahead of the other. Staggering the tunnels reduces the likelihood of damage from blasting in alternate tunnels. The work schedule is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week resulting in a 24-month timetable to break through to the north portal.

When mining accidents occur, workers often become trapped and/or incapacitated. Current rescue operations can be dangerous and too slow to produce favorable outcomes. Currently, no method exists for rescue crews to scout ahead at critical times to assess the situation. Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), through a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) sponsored program has developed the Gemini-Scout mine rescue platform. The Gemini-Scout was created to assist in underground mine rescue missions. It has been designed to go into potentially hazardous environments to assess the conditions (structural, air quality, temperature). In addition, it will enable two-way communications with potential survivors prior to human rescue teams being able to enter the area. The Gemini platform is a dual tracked-chassis design, which gives the robot excellent mobility in unstructured environments. The design includes a passive 2-degree of freedom joint between two identical bodies allowing for ±30deg of pitch and roll. In addition to the base mobility platform, the Gemini-Scout incorporates many other features to help it succeed in its underground mission. The electronics are mounted in explosion proof housings to ensure safe operations in hazardous gas environments. The platform is also able to operate in up to 18in of standing water with its elevated pan/tilt cameras for navigation. A four-channel video link and Two-way audio on the vehicle help to ensure located survivors can communicate with the robot operators. The platform also incorporates a Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approved multi-gas sensor to monitor air quality. SNL believes that this technology is broad enough to be appealing to other first responders, such as police, firefighters and medical personnel. Gemini could easily be fitted to handle earthquake and fire scenarios, and it could provide relief in currently inaccessible situations.

This paper describes the design and construction of a 22.86 m (75 ft) long jacked tunnel, which was successfully installed, despite difficult mixed face conditions at Metro-North’s Westport Station, in Connecticut in the fall of 2003. The tunnel utilized what is believed to be, the first application of a steel grillage system within the United States. This grillage was installed before the jacking started and allowed the tunnel to be jacked under four live railway tracks, which included the Acela high speed line, without affecting train operations. The clearance between the top of the tunnel and the rails was only 0.9 m (3 ft).
