Introduction A resource of more than 122 Gt (134 billion st) of minable trona and mixed trona and halite underlies an area of about 3400 km2 (1300 sq miles) west of Green River, WY (Culbertson, in preparation) (Fig. 1). In 1982, the total domestic consumption of soda ash (refined trona) was 6 Mt (6.7 million st) (Kostick, 1983). About 90% of this came from Wyoming trona. This enormous deposit occurs in the Wilkins Peak Member of the Green River Formation that is of Eocene age. This formation is derived from sediments deposited in a large lake named Gosiute. Lake Gosiute occupied the Green River Basin in southwestern Wyoming some 38 to 54 million years ago. The Wilkins Peak Member represents a restricted, evaporite-rich cycle of deposition when the trona deposits were formed. A total of 42 trona beds are known. Of these, 25 are of sufficient thickness and extent to be considered minable (Culbertson, in preparation). The production of sodium compounds from the trona deposits in the Wilkins Peak Member began in 1896 when wells were drilled within the present boundaries of the town of Green River. The purpose of the drilling was for extraction of sodium carbonate brines. Sodium carbonate (sal soda) was removed from these brines at a plant in Green River. Bedded trona was discovered in 1938 in a core from an oil well drilled south of Westvaco. In 1947, the underground mining of trona began. Production has continued from 1948 to date. Currently, five companies are mining trona and producing soda ash from the Wilkins Peak Member in Wyoming. Additionally, Allied Chemical Co. mines and processes trona for Church and Dwight's sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) operation in Green River. Competition in the soda ash industry depends primarily on the efficiency of mining and refining, allowing for lower-cost production. Newer plants and mine designs should increase efficiency. Solution mining holds promise as an even lower-cost method of mining. Employment in the soda ash industry is declining since the newer mining and refining methods are less labor intensive. Declines in employment, however, may be offset as production increases. Due to the large resource, the availability of minable trona should not be a problem for perhaps hundreds of years. Due to improved, stringent safety regulations, many modern road tunnels are statistically safer, per kilometer, than above ground roadways. However, the public perception and reaction in the event of a serious tunnel fire is very different to that associated with a surface incident. Vehicle fires in road and rail tunnels are recognized to represent an immediate and extreme danger to the patrons of those systems. Unlike workers in the mining and civil construction industries, the general public are neither trained nor equipped to fight fires or evacuate under deteriorating smoke conditions. Accordingly, for the majority of modern transportation tunnels the ventilation infrastructure is sized on the requirement to control the combustion products from worst-case fire scenarios and to provide a tenable evacuation route for the tunnel users. It is common for these same emergency ventilation systems to be employed, often in a reduced capacity, for other operating modes such as the dilution of pollutants during congested traffic conditions. This is one of the fundamental differences to mine ventilation, where primary ventilation systems are not typically sized based on fire scenarios. This paper presents an overview of the subject of fires in vehicular tunnels. This includes a brief history of major transportation tunnel fires followed by a discussion on the resulting legislation and standards that govern the design and operation of tunnel emergency ventilation systems. A summary is provided on the common criteria, theory, and design techniques that are employed during tunnel emergency ventilation systems design. Information is provided on fire detection and suppression, with a discussion on the growing acceptance of wet suppression as a means to mitigate major fires in road tunnels worldwide.

Ventilation planning in trackless metal mining is often taken for granted. This paper highlights the trials of planning and executing the ventilation design for Bog Zone at the Lisheen Mine. Ventilation planning for Bog Zone started at the feasibility study stage in 2003; subsequent design changes continued until 2006. In August 2006, the development of the Bog Zone ore body was accelerated through the use of contractors; in addition, the Lisheen equipment fleet was revised based on a larger load and haul fleet. As a result, the circuit was reviewed in terms of changes in design conditions and best practices. This review resulted in a 40% increase of total airflow required to mine Bog Zone. Resources utilized to design the circuit include: external review, computer modeling, and in-house Lisheen planning and operational staff review. The final ventilation design configuration was adopted in 2007, after modeling and evaluating 30 different scenarios, resulting in a better distribution of airflow, optimized secondary escape way, reduced contaminants, and a total power reduction. The value of investment in computer modeling of primary ventilation circuit and planning for staged implementation should never be underestimated.

The South Lake Union Pipelines contract for King County Wastewater Treatment Division and Seattle Public Utilities in Seattle, Washington included three 1.8 m (72-in)inside diameter microtunneled pipeline segments totaling about 793 m (2,600 lf).Tunnel alignments were within street right-of-way of heavily traveled urban roadways. Project challenges recognized in the design included: high groundwater levels; contaminated soil and groundwater; variable soil conditions, including fill; and timber piles and other obstructions remaining from historic land uses. The tunnels were built using a Lovat MTS Microtunneling machine, beginning in spring 2003. Conditions encountered during construction presented additional challenges beyond those anticipated in the design process, and were successfully addressed by the owners, designer, and construction management consultant all working with the contractor. Problems included highly variable soil conditions, cracking of reinforced concrete pipe joints during pipe jacking, a timber pile trestle uncovered during shaft construction, and obstructions encountered in the second and third microtunnel runs.

Traditionally, mineral sands are evaluated by preparing several mineral products using a combination of heavy liquid-, magnetic-, and electrostatic methods. Whole-rock assays (WRA) are then conducted on ilmenite, rutile and zircon products in order to determine trace element contents, which may affect project feasibility. Combined methods can be time consuming, expensive and even outdated due to the use of banned and toxic chemicals such as clerici solution. Coupled with large field-sample quantities, these procedures can potentially introduce unacceptable sampling and related errors. Modern mineralogical analysis techniques can provide complete mineralogical inventories on a single THM product, reducing the amount of processing involved in satisfactory characterization of early exploration samples. A small exploration sample can be processed to produce a small THM concentrate using readily available gravity/density methods. In turn, the THM product is submitted for Whole Rock Analysis (WRA) and mineralogical inspection by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and microscopic evaluation. Modal mineralogy and textural data can be determined using optical methods, automated image analysis, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) based systems. Benefits of automation are reproducibility and the capability of rapidly analysing thousands of particles as opposed to manual optical methods. Automated systems include the use of Automated Digital Image Analysis (ADIS), and SEM-based systems such as the Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) and QemSCAN. For detailed mineral chemistry, microanalysis techniques ranging from electron microprobe (EMPA) to Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry and Laser Ablation Mass-Induced Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (LAM-ICP-MS) are used. Examples of these automated and analytical methods are presented. ADIS at SGS-Lakefield Research uses optical characteristics to identify and measure mineral species in THM samples; rutile, pseudorutile, ilmenite and leucoxene can be distinguished. Analysis of a single THM product provides bulk modal mineralogy and grain size distribution of particles and the individual mineral grains. Textural information is also obtained detailing mineral associations as well as degree of alteration. Where textural and chemical resolution renders mineral identification ambiguous, SEM-based methods offer better resolution. Examples of this ambiguity are shown in this paper, which leads to QemSCAN as the preferred method where within-grain variability is concerned. Sampling and measurement strategies are followed to meet study objectives, providing a value-added framework for a sequential, cost-effective strategy, which will meet due diligence and bankable accreditation criteria. Studying a THM product by electron microprobe and LAMICP-MS may reveal potential fatal flaws related to mineral chemistry. Low detection limits in the range of 200 to 500ppm are possible using electron microprobe analysis for suitable matrixes (U, Th in zircon). For the detection of ultra low level elemental contaminants, LAM ICPMS is the most accurate method of evaluation. Elements including U, Th, La, Ce, Nb, and V in Ti-minerals can be determined down to 50 ppm.

As the popularity of precast concrete segmental linings for tunnels is growing in North America, some problems related to grouting of, and near, these linings are starting to appear. The installation of a segmental lining behind a TBM requires that the annular space around the lining be quickly filled with grout to prevent collapse of the ground. In practice, the filling of the annulus is frequently delayed and takes place a distance behind the machine typically via grout ports centrally located in the segments. If partial collapse of the annulus has occurred, it may become necessary to use higher grouting pressures in an attempt to distribute the grout. There have been several occasions where these increased pressures have caused damage to the tunnel linings. Similarly, compaction grouting adjacent to a tunnel lining can cause damage. This paper quantifies the effects of such grouting on a typical precast lining.

In the processing industries, it is well known that particle shape is an important factor which determines the behavior of particulate systems. For example, system properties of technological significance including rheology, suspension stability, agglomeration, packing, permeability…etc, are affected by particle shape. In this regard, characterization and analysis of particle shape is essential for more detailed understanding and improved development of particulate processes. In general, it is clear that the behavior of these systems depends on the statistical characteristics of particle shape. Remarkably few techniques exist to predict the mechanical and hydrodynamic behavior of an irregularly shaped particle or a population of irregularly shaped particles for that matter. The lack of models and correlations can be attributed to the wide variety and complexity of particle shapes, the difficulty of defining shape descriptors suitable for modeling, the limitations of measuring shape, and the lack of classifying techniques to characterize particle shape. In this paper, we present information on how 3D particle shape can be measured, characterized, and analyzed using cone-beam X-ray microtomography (XMT).

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted laboratory and field tests to evaluate the effectiveness of dust collector bags for reducing dust liberation and operator exposure from a roof bolter?s dust collection system. The laboratory tests evaluated the bag?s effectiveness to contain dust and the effect on canister filter loading in both a bag and bagless condition. The dust emissions from the collector?s exhaust were also measured in each condition during laboratory testing. Laboratory results show that nearly 100 percent of the test dust fed into the collector was captured by the dust bags. Loading and pressure drop on the dust collector?s canister filter is greatly decreased when using the bags, enabling longer periods of drilling without filter removal/cleaning. The field results showed that, even though dust standards were met, respirable dust in exhausted emissions was reduced around the bolter. Laboratory and field results show that benefits from use of the bags are realized in all areas of operator exposure.

Compagnie Miniere Esperance (CME), a mining company based in French Guyana, operates a gold primary ore body in open pit. The ore is processed through crushing, grinding and gravity separation. Tailings are stored in a ?fine? pond. Analyses of the fine ponds proved a residual gold grade sufficient for a chemical treatment. However, direct cyanidation would require a too large installation, regarding the local conditions (accessibility, supplying and rainforest meteorological conditions). It has been then decided to test the feasibility of a pre-concentration using flotation. Lab tests have been carried out by SGS Lakefield (Canada) in March 2007, which proves the technical feasibility. Therefore, CME asked Caspeo to: ? Carry out an on-site flotation pilot campaign. ? Design an industrial flotation circuit. The tailings reprocessing will contribute to a better tailings management and a dry up of the gold resource, limiting the risk of illegal mining after remediation of the CME site. CME MINE The Esperance gold mine is located in French Guyana, in the vicinity of several gold deposits as Omaï, Rosebel or Camp Caïman, holded by Iamgold and Newmont. These main gold deposits are located on the figure 1. Esperance was put into operation in the early 90?s. The first years were devoted to the mining of alluvial gold in the gravel of the Esperance Creek. Since then, operation was led in the primary gold deposit. Annual production is on average 254kg for a total production in fifteen years of 4300kg. Geology Esperance deposit is located in the greenstone belt of the Guyana Shield. Mineralization is in tectonic contact between sedimentary basin of Maroni and a granitic massif. Clastic series, composed of conglomerate and lamina sandstone, overlie a volcano-sedimentary basement (series called "Paramaca"). The area is strongly folded by shear movements, resulting from granite deposit. Gold is in interlacing quartz veins intersecting the clastic series. Gold is present in association with pyrite. Other elements, as silver or arsenic, are in negligible quantity. Exploitation The Maroni River is the only access to the Esperance mine. Only the saprolite and a part of the transition rock are extracted in the open pit. Excavation works are done using shovels Hyundai 450 (4 units) and haulage works using articulated dumpers Terex TA35 (4 units). These two sorts of equipments are presented figure 2. Mill The mill is composed of crushing and grinding processing plants. After gravity concentration, both plants produce tailings that are stored in two ponds: the first pond contains coarse product which segregates the particles crushed to 2mm upstream and settled clays downstream; the second pond contains the fine product made of particles ground to 200µm. These two ponds, bordered by dams and diversion canals, are located on former alluvial sites of Esperance Creek (see figure 3). [ ] The CME mill is currently producing gold concentrate, with a global recovery of about 67%. The ore is crushed by one jaw crusher and two hammer crushers. The health & safety of all workers in an underground environment is paramount to the success of our operations. The diesel emission reduction projects are key to improving such an environment. However, care must be taken to reduce the risk to personnel during such tests and prevent exposure to other hazards. VALE Inco works in a close partnership with its unionized employees, manufactures, suppliers, researchers and government officials to ensure projects are done safely and efficiently to successful completion. The Creighton Mine Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) project is an example of such a project that is currently under way to evaluate new and innovative technology that will further our search for improved environment for our workplace. This paper will discuss the issues and processes that are followed to ensure Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) field tests are conducted safely and productively.

Asking the question, “What do the world’s leading corporations and cutting-edge practitioners of sustainability put forth to guide a given mine site for planning and action toward ‘sustainability’?”, this paper explores the spectrum of methodologies and mindsets in available literature, then constructs an example for the large near-closure facility at Kennecott Utah Copper. Values, opportunities and constraints spring from physical, unutilized byproducts, from critical ecosystems and wildlife populations, from location relative to those ecosystems and proximate communities, and from the political will to perform adequate feasibility investigations. Patience, determination and thoroughness are imperative. Identifying most productive and, simultaneously, most protective and restorative, practical methods to approach ‘sustainability’ has become a central mission of industry and business, worldwide. A survey of recent international initiatives finds no single approach that establishes either a readily adaptable methodology or an appropriate set of ‘attention’ points, or agenda, to guide individual mining operations at specific locations toward the elusive but essential goal of ‘sustainable’ mining. Untying this convoluted knot of contending factors requires willingness to recognize and work within ecological constraints for community long-term needs. Occasionally, the task requires the sword of Alexander the Great. Through integration that is unflinchingly honest ethically, culturally, economically, ecologically and scientifically, fully cognizant of place and community at whatever scales are of greatest significance, and integrative of both problem-response and opportunity, we may envision a mineral extraction and beneficiation future that achieves the best, most nearly sustainable, results possible. Industrial ecology (IE), with its clear emphasis on community, ecosystems, and sustainable economic stimulation, presents a sufficiently broad and adaptable discipline to facilitate planning and management toward sustainable mining. The creation of sustainable jobs encapsulates IE’s analogy to the niche survival strategies of organisms in nature. Open to common-sense recognition of faults and opportunities at appropriate scales, IE is less a discipline or prescribed methodology than a mindset, willing to be rigorously scientific when science is imperative, but also willing to exercise “art” when creativity or community engagement are needed. IE is also capable of future-looking compassion for peoples and nature. Looking beyond what has occurred to date, the case of Kennecott Utah Copper provides ample illustration of possibilities for community economic development, environmental management, and significant initiatives beneficial at regional and planetary scales, to become recognizable as deserving of the label, ‘sustainable.’ Through what this researcher terms “whole mine, whole region, whole planet” thinking, strategies become visible and subject to serious consideration, presenting a path to best possible accomplishment in mining. Constituting a maximal broadening of mining’s “traditional” scope, the integrative approach proposed here is the ‘paradigm shift’ being made by many other industries around the world. In aggregate, these steps are the only hope for avoidance of environmental, social and economic risks that threaten to curtail resource development and impair mining companies’ ‘social license to operate.’

The Fifth International Heavy Minerals Conference (HMC) was held Oct. 16-19, 2005, at the Marriott Sawgrass Resort in Ponte Vedra, FL. With SME as sponsor, the 2005 conference marked the first time that the HMC was held in North America. The conference is held every two years and provides an important forum for professionals in the heavy minerals and related industries to meet and discuss issues related to heavy mineral exploration, mining, processing and marketing. Previous locations included Australia and South Africa. The conference consisted of technical presentations, field trips to heavy mineral operations, a trade show and social activities. It was appropriate that Ponte Vedra was selected as the location for the conference. Ponte Vedra, located on the Atlantic Coast 17 km (10 miles) southeast of Jacksonville, FL, is the birthplace of heavy minerals mining in North America. Ponte Vedra beaches were mined from 1916 to 1929 in what was then called Mineral City. Though Ponte Vedra is now a golf and beach resort, there are still four heavy mineral mines operating within an hour’s drive. Today the Ponte Vedra Country Club and Golf Course is situated in the center of the former mining site.

Along with increased production from longwall units has come the likelihood of increased worker noise exposures. In recent years, equipment has become larger, more powerful, and noisier than its predecessors. For these reasons, the Mining Division of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is investigating worker noise exposure on longwall faces and researching possible solutions to reduce this exposure. Part of this research effort involves studying the effect of covering the underside of longwall shields with acoustical material to reduce reverberating noise along the face. Experiments using acoustical absorptive insulation to cover the undersides of the shields, shearer body, and the shield supports were conducted at the full scale simulated long-wall test facility located at the Pittsburgh Research Center. Sound levels were recorded every 1.5 m [5 fl] along a 15.2 m [50 ft] section of the simulated face for all of the conditions tested. The analysis of the data indicated that a 2.0-3.0 dBA noise reduction was achieved between the shearer drums and a 4.0-5.5 MA attenuation was attained upwind of the headgate drum.

Minerals contribute to the U.S. gross domestic prod-uct (GDP) at several levels?mining, processing and manufacturing finished products. In 2008, the estimated growth rate for the real GDP of the United States was 1.1 percent and the nominal GDP was about $14.3 trillion (Table 1). Trends in various sectors of the domestic economy are often reflected in mineral production and consumption rates. For instance, continued declines in the U.S. housing market during 2008 were reflected in further reductions in the production and consumption of cement, clays, construction sand and gravel and crushed stone (mineral commodities that are used almost exclusively in construction), and those associated with the related manufacture of goods, such as ceramic tile, heating and air conditioning equipment, paint, plumbing and sanitaryware, roofing, wiring and wallboard ? all used by the housing industry. The widespread effects of the slowing domestic economy became more apparent in the last three to six months of 2008 when prices for many mineral commodities declined sharply after reaching record highs earlier in the year, indicating significantly lower demand for those materials or products containing them.

In open pit mine planning and design, push back mine sequencing is widely used for long-term production planning. In push back design, a series of nested pits is generated and then considered as possible push backs with regard to the minimum push back width requirements. These nested pits are produced by parameterizing on one economic parameters like commodity price, mining or processing cost, stripping ratio etc. The most important characterization of these push backs is that the inner most push back has the highest value per ton, the second inner most push back has the second highest value per ton and so on. These nested pits are generated based on the best estimates of grade within a representation of the ore body in a three dimensional matrix form. Therefore, the inherent uncertainty associated with reserve estimation (for our discussion grade uncertainty) is not taken into account when push backs are designed. These methods do not attempt to establish which part of the deposit is likely to be worth most. This paper introduced a new algorithm that incorporates ore grade uncertainty during push back design process. The suggested strategy tries to seek to schedule risky blocks later in the extraction sequence.

I.H. 635 (LBJ Freeway) was constructed as a loop freeway around the city of Dallas in the late 1960s and early 1970s with a design capacity of 160,000 vehicles per day (vpd). Today’s facility is carrying over 270,000 vpd. To help mitigate community concerns with regard to right-of-way issues, noise, safety, and traffic disruption, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is planning a number of significant improvements. The West Section improvements include the construction of managed HOV/Toll lanes. Within this 8-mile section, TxDOT is planning two mined tunnels(1.5 and 1.9 miles long) beneath the LBJ Freeway. The mined tunnels will connect to cut-and-cover box sections in both the east and west directions. This paper presents an overview of the project development from the design schematic, through the geotechnical investigations, into the current design stage. The project is being planned for implementation by use of a Comprehensive Development Agreement.

This paper presents tunnel design considerations for the SR75/282 Transportation Corridor Project in Coronado, California. The project is managed by the City of Coronado in cooperation with Caltrans and the US Navy and may include a one-mile long twin-tunnel section with two options: a 36.5 foot diameter twin-bored tunnel or a twin cut-and-cover box. The alignment crosses the Coronado Fault, and design provisions were needed at the fault crossing to maintain life safety and prevent rapid inundation of the tunnel in the event of fault rupture. These provisions are discussed along with considerations related to liquefaction and ground shaking. The project is currently in the planning stage with construction to start around 2012.

Elemental analysis of slurry streams using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) has long been employed. However, detector technology has limited the application of XRF devices. Using detector technology employed on NASA's Mars Pathfinder to analyze soil samples, Process Control, Inc. has developed an on-line analyzer to mount on a sampling system. The prototype XRF elemental analyzer was installed at Detroit Edison's Monroe Power Plant in January, 1998 and has been employed to monitor feedstock quality. A slurry system has been developed for flotation control. This paper describes the testing of the analyzer using the new, draft ISO standard for evaluating the performance of online analyzers (ISO/DIS15239).
