ABSTRACT: Some residential areas of the iron basin of Lorraine (in the North-East of France) are affected by noxious gas emissions (under oxygenated, carbon dioxide loaded and radon loaded gas mixtures). Site investigations showed that the gas flow was mainly due to natural thermal air circulation between old mines and the external atmosphere. The main hazards associated with this flow of gas and its potential accumulation in confined volumes within buildings are asphyxiation and intoxication. A further study is in progress in order to better understand the origin of the gas generation within the old iron mine workings. Following the first hypothesis, the carbon dioxide emission is mainly due to the specific hydro-geo-chemical process associating the pyrite oxidation with the acid dissolution of carbonates. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Einige Wohngebiete der Eisenmulde Lothringen (im Nordöst Frankreich) werden von Ausgasung gesundsheitsschädlichen sauerstoffarmen Mischungen, die mit Kohlendioxid und Radon beladen sind, betroffen. Untersuchungen am Ort haben gezeigt, wie diese Gasstroemung von natürlichem thermischen Luftumlauf zwischen den alten Bergwerken und der externen Atmosphäre ausgelöst wird. Erstickung und Vergiftung sind die wichtigste Risiken, die mit dieser Gasströmung und ihrer möglichen Speicherung in begrenzten Lokalen zusammenhängen. Eine weitere Untersuchung wird durchgefuehrt so dass man die Herkunft der Gaserzeugung in den alten Grubenräume besser versteht. Der ersten Hypothese folgend, Ausgasung von Kohlensäure liegt vor allem an dem hydro-geo-chemischen Prozess, der Pyritrösten mit der säuren Auflösung von Karbonate verbindet SCHLÜSSELWÖRTER: Gas, Ausgasung, Bergwerk, Strömung, Pyrit RESUME: Certaines agglomérations du bassin ferrifère lorrain (au Nord-Est de la France) sont affectées par des émanations de mélanges gazeux sous-oxygénés et chargés en certains gaz nocifs (dioxyde de carbone, radon…). Les investigations effectuées in situ ont montré que les écoulements gazeux à l’origine de ces émanations sont liées au phénomène de tirage naturel entre les anciens travaux miniers et la surface. Les principaux risques engendrés par ces émanations de gaz et son accumulation possible dans des endroits confinés sont l’asphyxie et l’intoxication. Une étude est en cours afin d’expliquer l’origine de la modification de l’air au sein des vieux travaux miniers. Les émissions de dioxyde de carbone seraient dues à des processus hydro-geo-chimiques associant l’oxydation de la pyrite et la dissolution de carbonates. Over the past two years Anglo Platinum made use of the specialist skills of Cyest Corporation to develop a Mine Optimization Tool (MOT) to enhance the current suite of in house mine planning tools and processes. The application was built in a multidimensional modelling environment developed by Cyest called CarbonL. This has allowed complex modelling that is transparent to the business users and therefore is not prone to the ?black box? approach that generally exists with these types of complex tools. The purpose of the MOT is to have an integrated software tool that can schedule production activities by half level for a shaft complex, while at the same time integrating the economics concomitant with that schedule. The tool allows the user to configure all activities relevant to the selected mining method, define the mine design parameters and geological parameters, define scheduling rules and then schedule all activities. This allows the user to test various production strategies and schedules very quickly and easily in terms of shaft value, costs and revenue profiles, labour complement and production ramp up so as to determine the option that best fits the overall strategy. This allows assessments of multiple scenarios in a relatively short period of time, after which only the best option is taken forward for graphic design and scheduling. This paper discusses briefly the rationale behind the Mine Optimisation Tool and the underlying workings of the modules that comprise the tool. It also covers the life cycle of this tool from the original prototype through to the final Mine Optimisation Tool software and discusses the positioning of the final tool.

The approximately 2800 Ma old Ventersdorp Contact Reef is a unique Witwatersrand orebody, from which about 6% of the world?s gold production is derived. A major portion of this production is mined at depths exceeding 2500 m and deepest levels of mining are at about 3600 m. The orebody?s hangingwall consists of volcanic rocks. This differs from the older Witwatersrand orebodies, which have quartzitic hangingwalls. The thickness of the Ventersdorp Contact Reef is generally about 1.20 m, but is highly variable, at an average dip of about 18°. A pronounced unconformity beneath this orebody is also expressed by varying footwall rock type characteristics and frequent rolling of the reef plane. These rolls follow topographic variations of the palaeo-surface. More geological than rock mechanics studies were performed on the Ventersdorp Contact Reef prior to 1992. Recently, however, a multidisciplinary team comprising various rock engineering and geological disciplines has delineated geotechnical areas by a novel technique. Geotechnical areas are defined by distinct footwall/hangingwall rock assemblages. The presence of three footwall and two hangingwall rock types results in the definition of six geotechnical areas across a distance exceeding 60 km, including about 10 gold mines. Distinct rock mass behaviour has been documented in three of the six geotechnically defined areas. Different rock mass behaviour is expressed by features such as mining-induced fracturing, closure rates, fall of ground characteristics and seismic character. Some geological features override the rock mass behaviour as defined for the individual geotechnical areas. These are undulations of the orebody or the frequency, characteristics and attitude of major discontinuities. It is concluded that the concept of geotechnically subdividing orebodies is not only important for facies delineation and the associated grade, but also needs to be considered for safety aspects, in determining factors such as the appropriate support to be employed.

The roasting of sulphide ores and concentrates is often the first step in the production of metals or chemicals. In many processes, the production of sulphuric acid is viewed as a by-product, while in some plants production is an important economic factor. Regardless of the purpose, a pyrite roasting plant consists of mainly three plant sections: roasting, gas cleaning and sulphuric acid. With the addition of air, the pyrite concentrates are transformed into solid oxides and gaseous sulphur dioxide at temperatures of 600 - 1000° C. After cleaning and cooling, the sulphur dioxide in the roasting gas is further processed to sulphuric acid. Two types of reactors are used depending on the application: stationary or circulating fluid bed . For over 60 years, Outotec has progressively been developing the principle of fluidised bed technology in several different reactor types for a multitude of process applications. The versatility of the fluidised bed reactor system has manifested itself in the treatment of minerals, including solid fuels, and for metallurgical processes both in the ferrous and non-ferrous fields. Process applications have included roasting, calcining, combustion and charring of coals, as well as off-gas treatment. This paper provides a summary of the pyrite roasting technology currently used along with a simple cost comparison of pyrite roasting and sulphur burning processes.

The 1,000 MW Hydro Power Station Masjed-e-Soleiman (formerly called Godar-e-Landar) in Iran is under construction since 1992. The rock engineering aspects of the major underground structure, i.e. the powerhouse cavern shall be reported on in detail. The geotechnical investigations are described and results given. The results of several geotechnical analyses are presented. The designed and executed rock support is given. A description of the monitoring systems and typical measurement results obtained during and after excavation are presented. The lessons learnt during construction of the Stage-I powerhouse cavern were applied on the extension of the powerhouse cavern, which is to house an additional 1000 MW. Details regarding the unexpected behaviour of the Mudstones are given. Die 1000 MW Wasserkraftanlage Masjed-e-Soleiman (vormals Godar-e-Landar genannt) befindet sich seit 1992 in Bau. Dieser Artikel berichtet im Detail über die felsbaulichen Aspekte der Untertagebauwerke, insb. der Maschinenkaverne. Die geotechnischen Untersuchungen werden beschrieben und deren Ergebnisse wie die Ergebnisse verschiedener Berechnungen werden präsentiert. Die geplante und die ausgeführte Felssicherung wird angegeben. Die eingebauten Überwachungseinrichtungen werden beschrieben und typische Ergebnisse während des Aushubs und danach werden dargestellt. Die Erfahrungen beim Aushub der Kaverne der Stufe I wurden beim Entwurf der Kaverne der Erweiterungsstufe II, die weitere 1000 MW beherbergen wird, berücksichtigt. Details zum unerwarteten Verhalten des Schluff-/Tonsteins werden angegeben. La centrale hydroélectrique de Masjed-e-Soleiman (dénommée anciennement Godar-e-Landar), d’une puissance de 1.000 MW, est en construction depuis 1992. Un rapport détaillé sera présenté sur les aspects relatifs à la construction en enrochements de l’aménagement souterrain principal, à savoir la caverne abritant la salle des machines. Une description des investigations géotechniques réalisées y est fournie ainsi que les résultats correspondants. En outre sont présentés les résultats de plusieurs analyses géotechniques. L’ancrage dans la roche tel que projeté et réalisé est présenté. Une description des systèmes de contrôle ainsi que les résultats de mesures typiques obtenus au cours des travaux d’excavation sont donnés. Les leçons tirées lors de la construction de la Phase 1 de la caverne de la salle des machines furent appliquées à l’extension de la caverne de la salle des machines, qui doit abriter une unité supplémentaire d’une puissance de 1.000 MW. Par ailleurs, des détails sont donnés sur le comportement inattendu des argilites.

The design and operation of coal preparation plants are governed by the inherent quality of the raw coal to be processed, market specifications and the saleable tonnage requirements. Topography influences the layout of the plant but does not affect the process design. The coal market comprises many sectors, each having specific requirements with respect to both size and quality. In turn, these have led to different levels of preparation and the development of specific types of coal preparation plant design. Developments in processing techniques and processing equipment have also influenced the design and now give the preparation engineer numerous permutations in process and equipment selection. This paper gives an overview of the coal industry in general and summarizes some of the developments in the design of plants and technical developments in the areas of dense medium processing, fine coal treatment and equipment design.

The northern KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) coastal dune cordon, South Africa, extends from north of Durban into Mozambique. The Quaternary dune cordon, which can be up to 2 km wide, comprises a series of stacked, unconsolidated dunes that in places attain a height of over 100 m. Mining of the dunes produces much of the world’s supply of ilmenite, rutile and zircon. This paper documents the age of zircon grains separated from dune units, identifies likely source rocks and presents an evolutionary history for the dune cordon. Between 30 and 60 detrital zircon grains from three distinct units from the northern KZN coastal dunes were analysed for U/Pb isotopic ages using the SHRIMP II at the Australian National University. The samples represent units from the base (ca. 250 ka; luminescence age1),middle (ca. 190 ka2) and upper (ca. 20 ka2) portions of the coastal dune cordon. Zircon grain ages identify three source populations: (1) a 1 000 to 1 200 Ma group correlated to the Natal Metamorphic Province, (2) a 500 to 650 Ma group representing a Pan-African belt, which may correlate to the Mozambique Belt and (3) a ca. 650 to 800 Ma group of unknown provenance. Surprisingly, the presently exposed basement, comprising the Kaapvaal Craton and Archaean volcano-sedimentary sequences, has not supplied a significant amount of zircon grains (< 5%).This suggests that unroofing of basement rocks in the region has only occurred during the last 20ka. In addition, the absence of zircon grains younger than 500 Ma indicates that the bulk of zirconis not reworked from the Karoo Supergroup cover succession, but may be sourced by reworking of the Natal Group sandstones.

The ability of an explosive to break rock is influenced considerably by the extent of confinement in the blasthole. It is believed that confinement is improved by the use of adequate stemming. The aim of this paper is to present the results of the first and second stages of developing a stemming performance testing rig for small diameter boreholes. The rig was used to compare and contrast the performance of different designs of products. The results showed that different stemming products have differences in terms of their functionality, which can have a major impact on the efficiency of rock breaking. Two test procedures were used, one through the exclusive use of compressed air and the second using a purpose-built high pressure test rig with small quantities of explosives. Both tests were used to identify and evaluate the ability of various stemming products to resist the escape of explosive gas through the collar of a blasthole. An investigation was done to determine the types of stemming products most commonly used in South African underground hard rock mines, and these products were used during the tests. The first stage of tests using compressed air only did not prove adequate to predict with certainty the pressure behaviour in the borehole of a particular product under high pressure conditions. The purpose-built high pressure test rig also did not prove to be a very effective tool to test stemming products under high pressure conditions. The test rig incorporated only the effect of gas pressure on the stemming product, and excluded the effect of the shock wave. This study therefore proved that to take into account only the gas pressure generated in the blasthole is not sufficient to effectively test stemming product performance.

The ferroalloys industry has generated historically substantial solid waste. The accumulated waste causes serious problems to the environment. However, it is possible to transform the solid waste into an environment-friendly resource to serve the human being. Consequently, the construction of plants that are ?environment-friendly? and that accommodate ?recycling? has become a target of most ferroalloy producers in the world to ensure sustainable development. This paper introduces the practice of Shanxi Jiaocheng Yiwang Ferroalloys Works, the biggest manganese metal producer in China, in the development of an ?environment-friendly and recycling? process. The process includes power generation using coal gangue, waste from local coal mines; hollow bricks manufacture using slag and fly ash from the power station; cement production using slag from ferroalloy smelting; recovery of ferrous and non-ferrous elements in the dust from the furnace gas cleaning system; application of silica dust in construction and so on. The final objective of the plant is to realize zero discharge of solid waste. The profit of the ?environment-friendly and recycling? process compensates in part for the operational expense of the environment facilities.

Solids suspension influences the quality of mixing and energy requirement in a solid-liquid system, both of which determine the efficiency of industrial processes such as nickel precipitation. Nickel solids concentration distribution in a stirred tank was investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and experimental methods. The concentration distribution of the nickel solids was compared with that of sand and glass. The laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) method was used to measure the velocity field for the liquid-only system and an optical technique was employed to determine the axial solids concentration distribution. Regions of in homogeneity in the tank were identified. It was found that, for a given solids loading, the solids concentration distribution depended on both particle size and particle size distribution. High solids loadings were investigated and a difference in the concentration distribution pattern was obtained with nickel, flint glass and sand particles. The CFD simulation results highlighted problems that could be associated with some conventional experimental methods of determining solids concentration distribution in a stirred tank. Transalloys produces 160 000 tons of SiMn per annum from five AC submerged-arc furnaces. The lime-ore melt from two AC open-arc furnaces is contacted with SiMn to produce 50 000 tons of medium carbon FeMn per annum. Metallics in the slag are reclaimed in a jigging plant, which has been in operation since 1999. The flow of materials between the jigging plant and furnaces has been optimised. The amount of recycle slag in the feed of the SiMn furnaces has been decreased by more than 30% which still provides satisfactory stability of the furnace operation. The jigging plant has absorbed all the additional slag generated, to recover SiMn metal. A review of the raw materials used and operating parameters for SiMn production was also undertaken. Slag to metal ratios were decreased by more than 30% by reducing the slag recycle, removing magnesite from the recipe and introducing high-grade ore. Electrode penetration was improved by reducing coke levels and by utilising more reactive coal. The pitch circle diameter (PCD) was reduced to get a better operating stability on furnace no 5 using the MINSTRAL Control System. Energy consumption on the furnaces improved by more than 15% while SiMn production increased as a result by more than 18%.

"A mineral resource royalty is payment to the holder of mineral rights for the utilization of the mineral resource. In South Africa, this payment is made to the State as holder of the mineral rights (The Mineral and Petroleum Resources Royalty Act of 2008). The principle purpose of this research paper is to identify if the State is benefitting from the mineral resource royalty by considering its impact on seven individual Witwatersrand gold mines.For this study, a simple financial optimiser model was created in Microsoft Excel that links the ore flow, block listing and the cash flow (excluding or including the cost of the mineral resource royalty). Mixed integer linear programing (the Excel Solver function) is utilised to optimise either profit or NPV (at 9% and 12%) by adjusting the cut-off grade.The impact on each of the seven mines mine was different but overall R7.9 billion is estimated to be paid in mineral resource royalty over their expected remaining lives. Due to the cost of the mineral resource royalty and increasing the cut-off grades, the total revenue decreases by R10 billion. A significant portion of this lost revenue would have been paid to the State in the forms of other taxation including company income tax which decreases by R2.8 billion. It is recommended that an industry wide investigation be conducted to determine if the resource royalty is adding to the State’s revenue, or destroying value including premature job losses. IntroductionTaxation of mining companies has become a very topical subject in the context of the postapartheid South African economy. There have been increasing calls for equitable re-distribution of mineral asset wealth for the benefit of all South African citizens and not just to an elite few. As part of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MRDPA) of 2002, the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Royalty Act of 2008 was introduced and came into effect in 2010 (South African Revenue Services, 2008). A mineral royalty is payment to the holder of mineral rights for the utilization of the mineral resource. In the case where the holder of the mineral right is the State, then this payment is made to the State (Cawood, 1999). Studies on the potential impact of the mineral resource royalty on the minerals industry have been conducted during the formulation of the Act and subesquently. These include Cawood and Macfarlane (2003), who suggested a cap of no more than 3% (Cawood and Macfarlane, 2003), as well as Cawood (2011), who predicted rising cut-off grades and thus reducing mineral reserves. In 2013, Grobler completed a Masters in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences at the University of Pretoria and concluded that the impact of the mineral resource royalty on the economy is positive. She stated that the royalty has caused operating expenses to increase, but this does not appear to be significant. Furthermore, she stated that the royalty has not affected the way the mining industry operates (Grobler, 2014)."

Main ore pass systems should last the life of a mine, and too often expensive and hazardous remedial measures are required to repair a damaged ore pass in an attempt to extend its life. In order to maximize the life expectancy of all ore passes at Moab Khotsong, ?wearing blocks? and ?softer support? systems, combined with basic rock engineering principles, have been implemented. Failure of an ore pass can have severe financial implications, both indirectly because the ore pass cannot deliver the broken rock either from level to level or directly in the shaft ore pass system to the required level for tramming to take place, and directly due to the cost of the repair work that is required. Several factors need to betaken into consideration so that production interruptions are eliminated or minimized. Investigations of damaged ore passes at Moab Khotsong and surrounding mines revealed some interesting mechanisms of damage, and some innovative methods of reducing or eliminating the damage have been implemented at Moab Khotsong. The system design was based on 30 years, experience in main shaft rock passes. The design was to counteract scaling, hang-ups and dust problems associated with main rock passes, and the objective was to increase the life of rockpasses. These problems, including the initial design aspects to try and eliminate the repair measures, are discussed in detail.

In the United States, chromium has been consumed in three major markets: chemical, metallurgical, and refractory. The predominant end use for chromium in the United States is in the metallurgical market as an alloying element in the production of stainless steel. In addition to being a major stainless steel-producing country, the United States is a major world producer of chromium-containing chemicals and has used substantial amounts of chromite ore for refractory applications. Chromium use is not easily further subdivided within the chemical and refractory industries because there is insufficient publicly available information to do so; however, chromium use can be subdivided among metallurgical industry uses based on the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported shipments of stainless steel by market classification (agricultural, aircraft, automotive, etc.). It is the goal of this study to determine the distribution of U.S. chromium apparent consumption among major markets in the United States. The distribution is expressed in the form of dimensionless fractions that are computed based on documented chromium consumption by major market. The distribution of chromium among markets within the metallurgical market is computed in a similar manner. Distribution factors are first computed for the major markets, then for markets that are subdivisions of the metallurgical market. The distribution of chromium among major markets has changed substantially over the time period of analysis. The fraction of chromium consumed by the metallurgical market has increased while that of the chemical and refractory markets has declined. Within the metallurgical market, the service industry market accounts for the greatest fraction of chromium consumption followed by transportation. Electrical, machinery, and fabricated products markets account for a substantial share of the metallurgical chromium consumption.

The latter half of the 20th century has seen the proliferation of a series of codes to address commodity needs which were brought about by rapidly advancing technologies and the globalization of markets and consumerism. This paper addresses the specific needs and the origin of this surge and presents these codes in the context they were developed. It also compares the main codes or groups of codes and elaborates upon their strengths and weaknesses. Three main categories of codes are identified, namely: codes for reporting to international agencies, codes addressing government needs and, finally, codes for the investors and the stock market. Codes governed by international agencies usually relate to strategic commodities which have highly specialized fields of usage like nuclear power generation where international cooperation is eventually the only viable approach for both the development of technologies and their applications. Codes for reporting to governments address the necessity of each state to exploit their mineral potential profitably and to secure the preservation of wealth for future generations. Reporting to investors is experiencing a considerable popularity as of late because of globalization in mining and the growing need for outside financing of mining projects, whose capital requirements are getting out of reach for the average mid-cap mining company. All these codes have advantages and shortcomings dictated by the specific circumstances under which they were developed, therefore necessitating the definition and implementation of some kind of international standard whereby investments and the spread of information across political boundaries would be facilitated. Though none of these codes might ever become international in the true sense of the word because of significantly different legislations at national level, a step that would greatly contribute to the cross-border disclosure of information would be the reciprocal recognition of competent persons by the major mining countries, including China and Russia. It is also becoming essential that financial institutions and investors be properly advised on mining projects by reporting reserves and resources in a transparent and responsible way with the relevant public disclosures being compiled by professionals who take full responsibility for their submissions. The roof of the Sishen cave is being mined in order to exploit 6.8Mt of high grade ore. The cavity is filled with quartzite backfill in order to support the roof in the event of collapse. The cave dips at approximately 37o, is 260m along dip and 70m along strike and has a total volume of 261,391m3. GPS and optical monitoring techniques were attempted to detect subsidence but proved to be impractical. The GroundProbe Slope Stability Radar (SSR) uses differential interferometry to measure sub millimetre movement in a rock face. The SSR was applied in a non production situation and detected subsidences of 38mm/day before visual signs of instability were detected. The rate of deformation detected was slowing as a result of the roof coming to rest on underlying backfill. Monitoring during production drilling detected a sudden subsidence of 18.6mm/hour which resulted in the evacuation of personnel from the area. Further inspection of data showed that the rate of deformation was slowing and production was allowed to continue without further incident. The SSR has helped dispel the fears of workers and has proven that subsidence can be accurately measured and delineated with the SSR.
