The vertical distribution of platinum-group elements (PGE) in the Merensky and UG2 chromitite Reefs is highly variable, but does follow certain general patterns that allow the testing of geological models. In the Merensky reef, historically popular geological representations and interpretations have suggested that the mineralization occurs in a pegmatitic pyroxenite bounded by two chromitite layers. However, there are now enough published exceptions to this relationship to expose its fallacy. The vertical distribution of the PGE depends largely upon the separation between these two chromitite layers or the absence of one chromitite layer. Where separation is small or only one chromitite layer is present, there is considerable PGE mineralization in the footwall below the pyroxenite and lower chromitite layer. With increasing separation between the two chromitites, the mineral¬ization occurs progressively higher in the succession, and tends to track the upper chromitite layer. The view presented here is that the entire Merensky package is comprised of three events of magma emplacement, in which each has produced variable reaction with, and erosion of, the footwall, causing recrystallization of pyroxenite into pegmatitic pyroxenite. The magma then produced a chromitite layer followed by pyroxenite. Each chromitite layer is associated with some mineralization, which was extensively complemented by the subsequent formation of a sulphide liquid carrying PGE that trickled down through about 1 m of permeable crystal pile. The sulphide liquid formed after, not coincident with, the pyroxenite layers. The distribution of PGE in the UG2 chromitite shows up to three upward depletion sequences of PGE, also suggesting three events. The PGE are associated only with the chromite. The contribution from a sulphide liquid is considered to have been minimal for two reasons. Cu and Ni are extremely low in the UG2 which would not be expected if sulphides had been present. Also, by analogy with the Merensky, downward trickling of sulphides would have caused some PGE to be present in the footwall. There are some PGE in the footwall, but only where remnants of chromitite occur, and the hanging wall is lacking in PGE. In the northeastern Bushveld the UG2 chromitite is thinner than elsewhere, and there is a UG3 chromitite layer, not present elsewhere, that has a high Pt/Pd ratio. It is surmized that in the rest of the Bushveld the UG3 only appears to be absent because it has merged with the UG2 to produce the high Pt concentration at the top of the composite UG2. The non-accumulation of the package of pyroxenite-norite-anorthosite between the UG2 and UG3 in the northeastern Bushveld, which is not seen elsewhere, creates an interesting challenge to the formation of silicate layering in the complex. The paper presents sensitivity analysis for a dynamic model of submerged arc silicon furnaces. The model we study, called ?Simod?, was developed by Elkem in cooperation with NTNU and Sintef. It is today a much used tool in Elkem for operator training and analysis of the dynamic behaviour of the silicon production process. The aim of our work is to bring the simulator tool closer to industrial practice, and construct a mechanism to adapt the model to the behaviour of a running process, online. The paper presents the results of the sensitivity analysis that has been undertaken for important parameters in the Simod model. The parameters associated with the process inputs are electric power loss, loss of fixed C and reactivity of carbon. The output signals that have been investigated are fed quartz, tapped silicon and silica. The paper also interprets the results of the sensitivity analysis in a process operation context.

Traditional risk quantification methods provide little information on the sources of risk, and tend to produce static over-conservative evaluations, which do not account for changes in the performance of the project. Capital investment decisions for large mining projects require more complex risk evaluation models that include the value of flexibility and the different risk levels associated with uncertainty on project variables (price, grade, dilution, and production rates, among many other). In this context, real option valuation (ROV) methods have proven potential to quantify the risk associated with such variables and integrate alternative scenarios and management strategies into the evaluation process. In this paper, a risk quantification model is developed that successfully quantifies the risk associated with dilution, as a function of production rate. This model is then validated in a case study on the Chuquicamata Underground Mine project. Keywords real options, risk management, risk quantification, dilution, minine planning.

The corrosion behaviour of a high-quality rebonded magnesia-chromite refractory in contact with a vacuum oxygen decarburization (VOD) slag with high Al2O3content (15?20 mass per cent) is investigated under VOD process conditions by rotating finger tests in a vacuum induction furnace. The refractory degradation mechanisms are studied by the characterization of corroded microstructures using scanning electron microscopy, equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy. In 2000 Ferroatlantica started a project with the aim to develop a new casting machine for silicon and other ferroalloys. Until now, it has been cast more than 25.000 tons of silicon for the chemical and metallurgical market. This system has improved the process yield, productivity and product quality which place?s Ferroatlantica at the top of technology development in this field. After the first presentation of the Ferroatlantica?s casting machine at Infacon X, we would like to show the improvements in the control which have permitted us to increase the lifetime of the copper and to obtain, at the end of the machine, the right product size for the customer avoiding the current necessity of crushing and sizing the lumpy metal. Furthermore, we have improved the system in relation to the obtaining of smaller granulometries at the end of casting machine. Not only is this kind of machine cost competitive for special silicon applications but also for other normal ferroalloys with different specifications of size and thickness.

A series of measurements of induced stress by the Compact Conical-ended Borehole Overcoring (CCBO) technique was performed within rock mass around a tunnel excavated in a region that an underground powerhouse is constructed under high initial rock stress. In the measurements, a phenomenon of core disking was observed during overcoring. The selecting method of strain data uninfluenced by the core disking was proposed, using X-ray CT scanner. Then, the state of induced stress determined from the selected strain data was discussed, comparing with the state of initial stress. Eine Serie von Messungen von induzierter Belastung mit kompaktem konisch-beendetem Überbohrverfahren (CCBO) wurde in Felsmassen um einen Tunnel ausgeführt, der in einer Region gebohrt wurde wo ein unterirdisches Kraftwert unter hoher anfänglicher Felsbelastung gebaut wird. Bei den Messungen wurde beim Überbohrverfahren ein Phänomen des Core Disking beobachtet. Die gewählte Methode der Belastungsdaten, unbeeinflusst durch Core Disking wurde vorgeschlagen, unter Verwendung von Röntgen-CT-Scanner. Dann wurde der Zustand der induzierten Belastung aus den gewählten Belastungsdaten diskutiert, unter Vergleich mit der ursprünglichen Belastung. Une série de mesures de contrainte induite effectuée avec la technique de forage de sur-carottage compacte à embout conique a été exécutée dans la masse rocheuse autour d'un tunnel excavé dans une région de construction d'une centrale électrique souterraine sous haute contrainte de roche initiale. Au cours des mesures, un phénomène de discage de carotte a été observé pendant le sur-carottage. La méthode de sélection des données de contrainte non influencée par le discage de carotte a été proposée, en utilisant un scanneur de tomographie calculée aux rayons X. Il s'ensuit que l'état de contrainte induite provoquée et déterminé à partir des données de la contrainte sélectionnées a été traitée, en effectuant une comparaison avec l'état de contrainte initiale.

Vanadium-based sulphuric acid catalyst has been utilized to oxidize SO2 to SO3 since the early 1900?s. This versatile product displaced the expensive and easily-poisoned platinum-based catalyst in nearly all applications by the 1930?s. MECS has been manufacturing the vanadium-based catalyst since 1925 and today is the leading supplier in the world of sulphuric acid catalysts in a variety of forms. Currently, MECS has world-wide customer/technical support for the catalyst as well as a dedicated catalyst manufacturing plant in Martinez, California. MECS also has a strong technical and research and development program dedicated to creating new and improved products and services. This paper will describe some of the technical details of vanadium-based sulphuric acid catalysts as well as offering a unique look into how caesium-promoted MECS catalysts can be used in single and double absorption acid plants, and off-gas plants running on irregular gas feeds, to reduce emissions and pre-heater run times. An update on MECS technical services extended for use in characterizing converter performance is also presented.

This paper describes the research and development programme to develop a prototype underground auger mining system aimed at developing and demonstrating an underground auger mining system able to provide economic access to thinner (<1.8 m) coal reserves of South Africa. Data concerning the performance of modern coal augers under South African coal mining conditions were gained from a proven surface auger which operated across a range of coal types. These data were analysed and considered in conjunction with historical information regarding previous attempts at building underground augers dating back to the 1950s. Drawing on these data a prototype underground auger mining system, the BryDet BUA 600 underground coal recovery auger, was designed and manufactured by the BryDet Development Corporation in collaboration with Eskom and Cutting Edge Technology Pty Ltd with support from Anglo Coal and the Ingwe Coal Corporation Ltd. The prototype BryDet BUA 600 underground coal recovery auger commenced trials in March 2000 at the Matla Mine near Witbank in South Africa. The initial trials were undertaken in an open cut to facilitate the commissioning and training associated with a prototype mining machine. A total of 30 holes was augered in the box cut before the machine moved underground. The prototype BUA 600 first achieved the target penetration depth of 80 m in its third hole. The prototype BUA 600 is a new underground mining system which has passed early testing with ?flying colours? and could provide access to extensive underground coal reserves unmineable by conventional mining techniques both in South Africa and elsewhere around the world.

Mintek together with Middelburg Steel & Alloys, developed the DC arc furnace process for the production of ferroalloys with the expressed objective of smelting ore fines (<1mm) without the need for agglomeration. In the case of ferrochrome production, the DC arc furnace, being a semi-open bath operation, loses radiant energy directly from the bath to the furnace roof and sidewalls above the melt. This energy loss is reflected in a higher electrical energy usage per ton of alloy than for a submerged-arc operation smelting lumpy ores or sintered pellets. The difference increases still further when pre-heated sintered pellet feed is used in a submerged-arc operation. This shortcoming of the DC arc furnace can however be overcome by preheating the feed to the furnace in a fluidized bed or flash reactor fuelled by cold furnace off-gas. In addition to fluidization and preheating testwork, various preheating flowsheets with associated mass and energy balances have been developed and compared from a techno-economic viewpoint. The three major advantages identified were: a) fluidized beds can preheat ores and fluxes up to 950°C without sticking and defluidizing, b) the open bath DC arc furnace does not require expensive coke or char to maintain the burden porosity and, c) the capital cost associated with the milling, pelletising and sintering plant falls away since ore fines are used directly.

Laser metal deposition (LMD) is an additive manufacturing technique whereby a stream of metal powder is consolidated by a focused laser beam on the surface of a substrate or engineering component. The interaction zone between the laser beam and powder particles is scanned superficially, generating tracks of deposited material. The tracks are overlapped in a deposition strategy in accordance with slices of a CAD model. Successive layers of material are built up to fabricate a near net shape part. In this work, the technique is used to fabricate metal matrix composites (MMCs) by using an elementally blended feedstock combining metal and ceramic powders in the melt pool, which melt and solidify to create the required morphology. Ti6Al4V + TiC MMCs were produced with 10, 20, and 30 vol.% reinforcing ceramic, and Zr + TiC MMCs were fabricated with 10, 20, and 30 vol.% TiC. The deposited thin walls were analysed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and indentation testing. In both systems, the analysis revealed the presence of partially melted TiC particles embedded in the metal matrix along with fine dendrites of re-solidified ceramic. The dendritic structures in the Ti-based composites were confirmed as TiC, whereas in the Zr-based composite the Zr metal reacts with theTiC to form ZrC, leaving Ti in solid solution. Both the MMCs show an increase in microhardness with increasing ceramic (carbide)content, reaching a peak HV0.1 value of 500 in the Zr- based MMC and HV0.1 of 550 in the Ti based MMC.

Titanium nitride in upgraded nitrided ilmenite (bulk of iron removed) can selectively be chlorinated to produce titanium tetrachloride. Except for iron, most other components present during this low temperature (ca. 200°C) chlorination reaction will not react with chlorine. It is therefore necessary to remove as much iron as possible from the nitrided ilmenite. Hydrochloric acid leaching is a possible process route to remove metallic iron from nitrided ilmenite without excessive dissolution of species like titanium nitride and calcium oxide. Calcium oxide dissolution results in unrecoverable acid consumption. The leachability of nitrided ilmenite in hydrochloric acid was evaluated by determining the dissolution of species like aluminium, calcium, titanium and magnesium in a batch leach reactor for 60 minutes at 90°C under reflux conditions. The hydrochloric acid concentration (11%, 18% and 25%), initial acid-to-iron mole ratio (2:1, 2.5:1 and 3.3:1), and solid-to-liquid mass ratio (1:8.33 to 1:2.13) were varied. The results indicate that a hydrochloric acid concentration of 25 wt% supplied in a 2:1 acid-to-iron mole ratio would produce the most favourable upgraded nitrided ilmenite product. The dissolution of iron in this solution reached 97 per cent after only 60 minutes. The total dissolution of calcium and titanium species was 0.01 and 0.11 wt% respectively. Hydrochloric acid can therefore be used as lixiviant to remove metallic iron from nitrided ilmenite. Mechanisation of mining operations is not a new concept in the world of mining. Machinery has been developed, manufactured and used for many decades in massive orebodies and coal mines, both locally and abroad. Because of their size and the huge tonnages available, massive ore bodies lend themselves very easily to mechanisation. However, little progress in mechanisation has been made in narrow tabular orebodies in South Africa. The equipment available for narrow tabular orebodies requires excavations of a size that introduce large volumes of waste dilution. Nevertheless, it is essential for South African miners to experiment with mechanisation and to find a solution to the problem. This address looks at current conventional mining methods and compares them to bord-and-pillar type mining methods. Off-reef mechanisation is also touched on. It then looks at different hybridised mining methods that are being used, i.e. a mixture of conventional mining and mechanisation. It finally looks at future prospects for mechanisation in narrow tabular orebodies.

Tin plating operations are of a complex nature due to the many operational variables that need to be controlled in order to create a product of required quality. The work in this report lays the basics for the control of a halogen plating operation based on the DuPont tinplating set-up with regard to the chemical make-up of the plating solution, as well as operational variables such as temperature and current density. To evaluate these aspects of the process, a rotating cathode Hull-cell set-up was used. This allowed for a laboratory scale plating arrangement that simulates industry closely with regard to chemical and hydro-dynamic considerations. Typical industry accepted standards were obtained for the values of operational variables and a ?baseline? test was conducted employing these standards. All subsequent tests conducted were benchmarked against this baseline result. A large suite of results was obtained in which it was found that changes could be made to the industry accepted norm which would improve on the stability of the operation and therefore the quality of the final tin-plated product. Examples of these results are: an increase in stannous tin concentration, an increase in sodium chloride concentration and a slightly elevated plating temperature. In addition, conditions were found that must be avoided to prevent instability and poor product quality.

Deep-hole blasting operations in opencast mines are always associated with some annoyance to the surrounding areas in terms of ground vibration, noise, flyrock, etc. These become more severe when underground mines run parallel to them. Blasting in opencast mines may pose danger to the underground mines in terms of roof/side failures, damage of water dams, isolation/ventilation stoppings and other underground installations. The paper discusses a case study in India on the impact of deep-hole blasting in Ramagundam Opencast Project ? III on the stability of various water dams of GDK-6B Incline coal mine operating in close proximity. The stability of underground water dams of GDK-6B Incline mine was endangered due to deep-hole blasting at OCP-III. There were 15 water dams in seam 3 and 16 dams in seam 4 of the underground mine. The physical strength tests using a Schmidt Hammer instrument were carried out in all the 15 water dams of No. 3 seam and 16 water dams of No. 4 seam. The test revealed that there is a decrease in compressive strength values of three dams of seam 3, namely 6A, 6B and 7. Theose three dams were also directly connected to the water source. Water seepage was also observed from the surfaces of the three dams. However, they were found to be stable in accordance with their design parameters and damage point of view while considering a threshold value of ground vibration as 25 mm/s. It was found that the value of tensile stress generated by a vibration of 25 mm/s was much lower (i.e. 0.171N/mm2) than the tensile strength of the two weakest concrete dams (1.85 N/mm2). Ten experimental blasts were conducted at different working benches of the opencast mine and the ground vibration data were recorded in roof and pillars near various underground water dams. The maximum value of vibration data recorded was 5.9 mm/s in roof near dam no. 1 in seam 3 with the dominant peak frequency of 22 Hz. No adverse effect on either of the dams was observed after that blast. During the period of study, no deterioration/adverse impact was found in any dam of the mine. Based on the results of the study and the analyses of the data, optimized blast design parameters and explosives weight per delay were suggested for the opencast mine to maintain the safety of the underground water dams. Mapping of exposed rock walls provides data on geological features such as joints, bedding planes, faults etc critical to the economics and the safety of mine operations. Traditional, manual methods of mapping can be time consuming, error prone and limited in their coverage. New methods have been developed to map exposed faces remotely and safely however the benefits of these methods are only fully realised when exposed structures can be quickly and easily mapped using automated methods. This paper describes the application of an automated method of analysis of 3D images that provides users with the capacity to map exposed structures automatically. The method is based on the use of vector classification methods used in some neural network systems and provides rapid and reliable identification of exposed planes. CSIRO Exploration and Mining is applying these methods to 3D images for a range of applications from pit mapping to machine automation.

The kinetics of MnO reduction from high carbon ferromanganese slag was investigated using a sessile drop technique at 1600 ºC. The effects of reductant type, ambient atmosphere and slag composition on the MnO reduction were illuminated. Two different types of industrial reductants (ground to a particle size of 44 to 106micron and pressed to pellets) were used as substrates for small slag droplets of varying composition, which were reacted in a CO or Ar atmosphere with the reaction studied in-situ. The cross sections of the reacted slag-carbon samples were subsequently studied by EPMA to find the extent of MnO reduction as a function of reaction time. It was found that the rate of MnO reduction is affected by both the type of reductant, the ambient atmosphere and the presence of metallic components in the slag. Higher reduction rates were obtained for charcoal than for coke as reductant while a CO atmosphere unexpectedly yielded faster MnO reduction than an Ar atmosphere. It was also found that metal prills in the initial slag will increase the rate ofMnO reduction.

"The robust nature of alumina refractory materials presents opportunities for their in-process reclaiming and re-use in non-critical applications. Virgin refractories can be substituted with different quantities of reclaimed materials without compromising the quality of the refractory products. In this study, the effect of reclaimed bauxite on andalusite-containing refractory castables for tundish applications was investigated. The recycled bauxite was formulated in different proportions to replace virgin andalusite in the castables. Standard tests were conducted to evaluate the physical, physicochemical, and thermochemical properties of the formulated products. Static corrosion tests were conducted using tundish slag in order to simulate the actual operating conditions. The results show that the standard flow behaviour, open porosity, and bulk density of samples containing up to 22 mass% reclaimed bauxite were comparable to those of the reference castable. However, high-temperature properties such as static corrosion at 1400°C and hot modulus of rupture at 1500°C indicated that there is an upper constraint to the amount of substitution. The study demonstrated direct potential savings of up to 10% when the reclaimed alumina replacement ratio was increased to 22 mass%. IntroductionAlumina-based refractories can be classified into low-alumina, containing less than 50% Al2O3, and high-alumina or bauxite, containing between 50 and 90% Al2O3. High-alumina refractories have widespread applications in high-temperature metal extraction processes due to their outstanding thermochemical and thermomechanical properties and stability (Rebouillat and Rigaud, 2002; Frulli, 2016). The typical chemical composition of refractory-grade bauxite consists of 85–90 wt.% Al2O3, 5–10 wt.% SiO2, 1–2wt.% Fe2O3, 3–4 wt.% TiO2, 0.4–0.8 wt.% CaO + MgO, and 0.20–0.8 wt.% K2O + Na2O (Nyoka et al., 2013). The thermochemical and thermomechanical properties of bauxite-based refractories rely principally on the conversion of the contained silica and alumina to the highly stable corundum (?-Al2O3) and mullite (3Al2O3· 2SiO2) phases (Rebouillat and Rigaud, 2002; Hill and Sehnke, 2006; Garbers-Craig, 2008; Frulli, 2016)."

Potgietersrust Platinums Ltd (PPRust) is Anglo Platinum?s only open pit operation. The major slope stability concern at PPRust is rapid, small-scale brittle failure on the west wall of Sandsloot open pit. In order to improve safety and mine more economically, a comprehensive slope monitoring strategy has been implemented. In the last 3 years four new state-of-the-art monitoring systems have been installed namely an ISSI microseismic monitoring system, a GeoMoS automated prism monitoring system, prismless Riegl laser scanners and a GroundProbe slope stability radar (SSR). Groundwater monitoring and visual monitoring have also been improved over the same time period. To complement the visual inspections, SiroVision digital photogrammetry is now used for predicting where future failures may occur. All these monitoring tools provide primary monitoring which is used to identify high risk areas. The SSR is then set up in that area to provide early warning of failure so evacuation can be successfully done. Fault tree analysis has proved that with this comprehensive slope monitoring strategy the geotechnical risk at PPRust is greatly reduced, allowing mining to continue safely and economically in challenging conditions.

The Bushveld Complex is economically significant and strategically important to South Africa, thus it is imperative that optimal extraction of platinum group metal (PGM) resources on the Bushveld Complex is achieved. Optimal extraction broadly requires that the maximum amount of ore is extracted by excavating and hauling the minimum amount of waste in the shortest possible time, at the least cost, and in the safest and most environmentally acceptable manner. In open-pit mine planning this entails among other things, minimizing the waste stripping ratio, whereas in underground mine planning it includes minimizing the metres of waste development. In conventional mining, the main development that is in waste or partly in waste and defines the mining grid pattern includes levels and raises. It was prudent to consider optimizing level and raise spacing in conventional mining because the method is a prevalent mining method on the Bushveld Complex accounting for nearly 70% of platinum production.
