It is common practice in the beneficiation of iron ore ultrafines to apply reverse flotation, and hence float the gangue minerals, leaving behind a high-grade iron ore product. Given the difficulty in floating particles finer than 20 μm, especially those finer than 10 μm, it is necessary to subject the feed to desliming ahead of flotation. There are two problems with this approach. Firstly, given the known inefficiencies of cyclones, desliming needs to be aggressively applied to particle sizes upwards of 45 μm to ensure all the offending ultrafine gangue is removed. Secondly, desliming also removes a significant portion of the valuable iron ore. Thus, a significant portion of the ultrafines, including the iron ore, is lost to the tailings. This paper examines the direct flotation of iron ore fines using the Reflux Flotation Cell. The RFC operates using a concentrated bubbly zone, in the absence of a conventional froth zone, for delivering strong counter current washing through an inverted fluidised bed of bubbles ahead of the product discharge. A system of parallel inclined channels in the lower part of the cell provides enhanced segregation of the bubbles from the tailings, preventing the loss of air bubbles into the tailings. Experiments conducted under semi-batch conditions produced encouraging results with concentrates of ~65% Fe grade in a single flotation stage. Comparatively, up to five successive batch flotation stages were required when using a laboratory scale batch mechanical flotation cell to achieve similar Fe grades. For a given grade, lower Fe recoveries were typically achieved by the RFC. This was attributed to the effective prevention of ultrafine particles succumbing to hydraulic entrainment under a positive bias flux, as well as an increasing feed volume involved in the semi-batch operation using inverted fluidisation water for cleaning. Overall, similar grade-recovery curves were produced, however, significantly higher grades were obtained by the RFC and with fewer separation stages. "The FASTMELT ® process was developed as an alternative to blast furnace ironmaking; in this process, high-quality molten iron is produced using direct reduction followed by high-temperature slag/metal separation. In this study, iron recovery and phosphorus removal from oolitic highphosphorus haematite using the FASTMELT® process was investigated. The performance of two reducing agents, coal and wood char, was compared. Direct reduction experiments indicated that with optimized reductant addition, the ore-char and ore-coal briquettes attained metallization values of 82% and 78%, respectively, and residual carbon contents of 0.24 and 2.35%, respectively. The slag/metal separation experiments revealed that molten iron containing 0.41% phosphorus and 0.021% silicon (by mass) was produced from optimally reduced ore-char briquettes, and molten iron containing 0.78% phosphorus and 0.91% silicon from optimally reduced ore–coal briquettes. The study indicates that carbonaceous materials with high CO2 reactivity are suitable for use in the FASTMELT ® process for phosphorus removal and iron recovery from oolitic high-phosphorus haematite. IntroductionIn China, the general depletion of iron-rich mineral reserves has led to many efforts to exploit low-grade and refractory ironcontaining resources for ironmaking (Liu et al., 2014). The efficient utilization of the highphosphorus oolitic haematite resources in central China has received considerable attention. The available resources of this material total approximately 3.0 billion tons. The oolitic units in the ore exhibit an onionlike structure with phosphorus-containing gangue layers of 2–10 µm thickness. The best concentrate produced from these resources contains approximately 50% iron (Fe) and 0.8–1.2% phosphorus (P) (by mass) (Ai, Yu, and Wei, 2009; Song et al., 2013; Wu, Wen, and Cen, 2011). Further removal of phosphorus from these ores using conventional beneficiation methods is not possible."

The project report is based on vacation work done by the writer at the Khutala Colliery during December/January 2009?2010. The purpose of this report is to explain and describe the design process in a multi-seam mine design for coal extraction at the Khutala Colliery. The multi-seam design will focus on the No. 2 and No. 4 seams as these are the seams that are currently being mined by underground methods at Khutala Colliery. The seam thicknesses and the parting thickness between the seams provide suitable conditions for designing a multi-seam mine design. An investigation into the pillar design aspects is carried out followed by a numerical modelling analysis of various scenarios. This analysis validates the first principles approach provided by multi-seam design guidelines. The design results from the analysis of the selected pillar design indicate sufficient parting for primitive conditions between seams, thus illuminating the need for superimposing in-panel pillars. This multi-seam mine design confirms the potential for the extraction of coal in a new panel. The design indicates that significant amounts of power station coal are present and suitable for extraction by room and pillar mining methods. The panel block indicates 401 625 tonnes of ROM coal. This block has a life of panel that will be mined just over a 4-month period. This 4-month period is assumed to mined at a production rate of 48 000 tonnes per month. Reinforcement and surface support are part of an integrated system that transfers and shares loaduntil the excavation surface is stabilized or until the ground support system fails. Steel mesh is the most popular primary surface support element in underground hard rock mines in Canada. Mesh straps are a secondary surface support that provide additional containment as they distribute the load between and across the reinforcement elements. This investigation addresses the role of steel properties, and in particular steel chemistry, in the long-term performance of mesh and mesh straps when exposed to an aggressive corrosive environment. It reports on comparative accelerated corrosion studies to compare the resistance to corrosion of different surface support elements. This has significant implications on the choice of surface support and the anticipated rehabilitation requirements.

"Double oxide films (bifilms) are significant defects in light alloy castings that occur when, during melt handling, the oxidized surface of the melt is folded over onto itself and then entrained into the liquid metal, encapsulating a portion of the local atmosphere. These defects create crevices in the final castings and have been shown to decrease tensile and fatigue properties, and also to increase their scatter, making casting properties unreproducible and unreliable. This paper reports on two different experiments performed to study the behaviour of such defects in Al alloys. In the first experiment and as a proxy for a bifilm, air bubbles were held in an Al-5Mg alloy melt for varying periods of time before the melt was allowed to solidify. The composition of the gas content of the bubbles was subsequently analysed using mass spectrometry to ascertain how it changed with time. In the other experiment the influence of the age of bifilms on the mechanical properties of Al-5Mg castings was assessed by holding castings in the liquid state for different times before solidification, followed by mechanical property testing and SEM and EDX studies of the fracture surfaces of tensile test bars. This research could provide a better understanding of the behaviour of double oxide film defects, and may lead to the development of new techniques by which these defects could be eliminated, or at least deactivated, in light alloy castings. Introduction One of the major structural defects affecting the reproducibility of mechanical properties of aluminium castings is the double oxide film defect (El-Sayed and Essa, 2017; El-Sayed and Ghazy, 2017). This type of defect is usually created as a result of poor filling system design. Owing to the very high reactivity of liquid Al-Mg alloy with oxygen in the air, the surface of the liquid metal can be considered to be permanently coated with an oxide film (Weigel and Fromm, 1990). As a consequence of surface turbulence, the oxidized metal surface can become folded over onto itself, but not fused, and then submerged into the bulk liquid, with a portion of the mould atmosphere being entrapped within it (Campbell, 2003; Al- Sayed, 2016; El-Sayed, Hassanin, and Essa, 2016)."

A progressive karst formation and its influence upon engineered structures in the ‘phil-karst’ rock mass draw a tunnel engineer’s special attention to a long-term stability and the maintenance issues. Karst sinkholes of any size beneath the railway bed cause train wrecks or long interruptions in train traffic during rehabilitation work. The collapse of cave roof, called a ‘doline’, is in general connected to the cave by the gradual dissolving of the rock, developing into subsidence and sink-holes. The principal conclusions obtained from the field experiments are as follows: It is found that the development of karst cavity shows a relationship with a structural geological line and it is necessary to define the dominant directions of joint and geological layer (formation). The relation-ship between the water flow and joint direction can be used as an indicator of cavity presence in their direction. In addition the direction of in-situ stress can play a role in the development of karst cavities. A risk map of karst scenario is produced for the tunnel supporting systems with rock type classifications in water-soluble karstic rock mass. Eine fortschrittliche Karst-Formung und sein Einfluß auf angelegten Strukturen in der Phil-Karst-Felsenmasse wecken einem Tunnelingenieur eine besondere Aufmerksamkeit zu einer langfristigen Stabilität und der Wartungsausgaben auf. Karstensinkhöhlen in irgendeinen Größen unter dem Eisenbahnbett sind die Ursache der Zugeszerstörung oder der langen Unterbrechungen in Zugverkehr während Rehabilitationsarbeit. Der Zusammenbruch von Höhlendach, d.h. ein “doline”, ist im allgemeinen an die Höhle, die durch das allmähliche Auflösen des Felsen zu entstehen ist und sich in die Subsidence und Sinkhöhlen entwickeln, angeschlossen. Die Hauptschlüsse, die von Feldenprüfungen erhalten wurden, sind folgendermaßen: es wird gefunden, daß die Entwicklung von Karstenhöhlung eine Beziehung mit einer strukturellen geologischen Linie zeigt und es notwendig ist, die vorherrschenden Richtungen von Gelenk und geologischer Schicht (die Formung) zu definieren. Die Beziehung zwischen dem Wasserablauf und der gemeinschaftlichen Richtung kann als ein Anzeiger von Höhlungsanwesenheit in ihrer Richtung benutzt werden. Zusätzlich kann die Richtung von In-Situ-Spannung eine Rolle in der Entwicklung der Karstenhöhlungen spielen. Für das Tunnelunterstützungssystem, welches mit Felsentypenklassifizierungen in wasserlöslicher Karstic-Felsenmasse, ist eine Risikokarte von Karstenszenar hergestellt. Une formation progressive de karst et son influence sur les structures tracées dans la masse de roche "phil-karst" retiennent l'attention particulière des ingénieurs de tunnel aux problèmes de la stabilité à long terme et du maintien. Les creux de karst de toute la taille sous le chemin de fer causent les accidents de trains ou de longues interruptions pendant le travail de réhabilitaion. L'effondrement du plafond de caverne qui s'appelle "doline" s'est, en général, connecté à la caverne par dissolution progressive de la roche, en devenant l'affaissement et les creux. Les conclusions importantes venant des experimentations sur le terrain sont suivants: d'abord, le développement de la cavité de karst montre le rapport avec la ligne géologique de la structure et il est nécessaire de définir les directions dominantes du joint et la couche(formation) géologique. La relation entre l'écoulement de l'eau et la direction du joint peut être utilisé comme un indicateur de la présence de la cavité dans leur direction. De plus, la direction sur place peut contribuer au développement des cavités de karst. Le plan risqué de karst s'est produit pour le système d'appui du tunnel avec les classifications du type de roche dans la masse de roche karstique qui est soluble dans l'eau.

Photometric sorting of ore on a South African gold mine by N. J. KEYS. B.E. Met. (Queensland) (Visitor). R. J. GORDON. (Visitor). And N. F. PEVERETT. B.Sc. (Eng.) (Wits) (Fellow) This paper concerns the development and application of a high-throughput, multi-stream photometric sorting machine developed for the South African gold mines. It is now believed that this sorter and its progeny may be found suitable for a large proportion of all possible sorting applications. A laser-light source and sensitive photomultiplier are employed in a scanning system to detect light reflected from the surfaces of rocks passing through the sorting zone. Electronic circuitry then analyses the photomultiplier signal, which represents the varying intensity of the reflected light, and produces control signals to actuate the appropriate valves of an array of air-blast rejection devices to remove from the feed certain particles selected by the analysing process. Typical throughput per machine ranges from 50 t/h for a minus 60mm plus 30mm feed to 200 t/h for minus 150mm plus 70mm material.

"Ferrochrome (FeCr) is vital for the production of stainless and high-alloy ferritic steels, since it is the only source of new Cr units. FeCr production is an energy-intensive process. The pelletized chromite prereduction process is most likely the FeCr production process with the lowest specific electricity consumption (SEC), i.e. MWh/t, currently in operation. However, due to increases in costs, efficiency, and environmental pressures, FeCr producers are attempting to lower their overall energy consumption even further. Recently, it was proven that pre-oxidation of chromite ore prior to pelletization and prereduction significantly decreases both the SEC and lumpy carbonaceous reductants required for smelting. This paper presents the first attempt at conceptualizing the technoeconomic feasibility of integrating chromite pre-oxidation into the prereduction process. Financial modelling yielded a net present value (NPV) at a 10% discount rate of approximately R900 million and an internal rate of return (IRR) of approximatelyy 30.5% after tax, suggesting that the implementation of pre-oxidation prior to pellet prereduction may be financially viable. Sensitivity analysis indicated that the parameter with the greatest influence on project NPV and IRR is the level of prereduction. This indicates that the relationship between maintaining the optimum pre-oxidation temperature and the degree of prereduction is critical for maximium process efficiency. IntroductionStainless steel is a crucial alloy in modern society. Virgin chromium (Cr) units used in the manufacturing of stainless steel are obtained from ferrochrome (FeCr) – a relatively crude alloy consisting predominantly of Cr and iron (Fe) (Murthy, Tripathy, and Kumar, 2011; Beukes, van Zyl, and Ras, 2012). FeCr is produced mainly by the carbothermic reduction of chromite ore in submerged arc furnaces (SAFs) and direct current arc furnaces (DCFs) (Neizel et al., 2013; Beukes, Dawson, and van Zyl, 2010; Dwarapudi et al., 2013). The energy required to heat, smelt, and reduce the chromite ore to the metallized state is supplied by electricity (Pan, 2013). FeCr production is an energy-intensive process, with a specific electricity consumption (SEC) varying from 2.4 MWh/t to more than 4.0 MWh/t FeCr produced, depending on the process applied (Pan, 2013; Neizel et al., 2013). Daavittila, Honkaniemi, and Jokinen (2004) stated that the typical operational costs of FeCr smelters can be divided into four categories, i.e. chromite ore (30%), carbonaceous reductant (20%), electricity (30%), and other production costs (20%). This makes electricity consumption the joint largest factor that influences operational costs in FeCr production."

Over many decades, numerous feasibility studies have demonstrated, that the production of sulphuric acid remains the most viable option of sulphur recovery from smelter off gas and abatement of SO2 emissions to the atmosphere. This is particularly more pronounced as smaller but more concentrated off-gas flows are to be treated from smelters, and enhanced sulphuric acid processes become available. Off-gas handling systems represent a significant capital and operating cost burden to the metallurgical operation. Modern pyrometallurgical smelter processes for sulphide ores based on the use of oxygen-enriched air, produce relatively small off-gas flows with high SO2 concentrations in the smelter gas of 30?60%-vol. of SO2. This is a prerequisite for substantial cost reductions in the smelter off-gas handling and treatment system. As an alternative to sulphuric acid production, numerous scrubbing concepts with alkali or dual-alkali combinations as well as organic absorbents have been proposed. Also the reduction of the SO2 to elemental sulphur has frequently been studied. Very few of those alternative processes have been built in industrial scale, but all were generally characterized by none-sustainable operation due to cost reasons, problems with issues related to chemicals used and by-products or poor availability. Thus the traditional concept of converting the SO2 to sulphuric acid is most common, although regarded as uneconomic, but is at least a proven, environmentally sustainable and reliable way of sulphur gas processing. With the high acid price levels these days, operating companies are even able to generate significant revenue with their otherwise ?fatal? acid. Even though smelter gas is available at high SO2 concentrations, in a conventional acid plant one would add large amounts of air to dilute the gas down to a suitable concentration of 12?13 (14) %-vol. SO2. Dealing with higher SO2 concentrations in smelter acid plants is not feasible, as the gas exit temperature of the catalytic oxidation step would exceed the allowable limit for the catalyst. Hence those conventional acid plants are characterized by the use of large equipment, i.e. high capital cost, high energy consumption and limited flexibility. The newly developed LUREC® process can handle off-gas with significantly higher gas concentrations, even in excess of 25%-vol. SO2. It is entirely based on well-proven equipment and unit operations. The first industrial application, operating with 16?18%-vol. SO2 will be presented in this paper, along with the fundamentals of the process. It will be demonstrated that the process requires inherently lower capital cost, fewer operating costs, and offers better energy recovery and lower emissions as compared to conventional design. While most existing smelter acid plants would have some built-in spare capacity, any significant increase of smelter capacity, say of 30%, can basically not be accommodated without installing an additional parallel new acid plant unit. An add-on LUREC® module can remove any such restriction, while simultaneously debottlenecking the existing acid plant. The paper also discusses the present status of the add-on technology for smelter acid plant expansions with respect to technical boundary conditions of different process alternatives as well as economic and environmental aspects. Application of the LUREC® process to modern smelter acid plants operating with high SO2 gas concentration, will lead to a substantial reduction of the specific size of the gas processing equipment and equivalent savings in capital and operating cost. The LUREC® process is patented worldwide by OUTOTEC.

Carbonatites are generally competent rock masses with rock mass rating class II rating 60–74. In spite of their competency, they tend to be affected by weak features like manganese-iron veins and/or in situ rock damage due to brecciation associated with carbonatite complexes. Rock slope failure in such hard rocks is complex since such structures within the rock mass form weak links that could potentially control slope instability. In this contribution, a numerical simulation using phase2 v 7.0 was carried out to investigate the influence of in situ rock damage on the stability of mine pit walls. The outcome reveals that, the existence of breccia in the competent rock mass has the capability to reduce the slope stability performance particularly at gentle dipping angles of emplacement in close range to the slope toe. However, as the emplacement position of breccia moves away from the pit wall, the stability performance increases at gentle dipping angle <50º. On the contrary, at the dipping angle of 50° the performance of slope reduced, and at steeper angles >50° the impact becomes negligible. Thus, from a series of analyses, mine design in brecciated rock masses, the ratio of 1:5 between the breccia distance from slope toe and pit depth should be implemented to counter its impact, and if the breccia is within or close to the pit limit, a deliberate effort must be made to mine it out.

In this study, we review the role of mechanical activation in the pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical, and electrometallurgical processing of titanium feedstock. Mechanical activation has been shown to decrease the activation energy of chemical reactions, thus enhancing process efficiency and product quality by reducing processing time and energy consumption. Pyrometallurgical processing is energy-intensive and time-consuming. Hydrometallurgy is costly, requires high-grade feed material, and generates toxic waste. Waste generation and process complexity are the major drawbacks of electrometallurgy and solvent extraction. Bioleaching via a mechanically activated pyrometallurgical process can be identified as an alternative method, but the lengthy processing time is the major disadvantage. Mechanically activated titanium concentrate can be used in a finely tuned combined metallurgical process to overcome the challenges and drawbacks in these technologies.

The Council for Geoscience (CGS) performed a macroseismic investigation following the occurrence of an earthquake in the Boksburg area on 11 June 2023. The event had a magnitude of ML 4.4 and a focal mechanism that showed the event as having strike-slip motion along a northwest-southeast oriented fault. The event resulted in aftershocks, some of which occurred away from the causative fault in the east in an area without a mapped fault. However, the cluster of past events in that area suggests that there is an active fault. Due to the size of the main earthquake, a macroseismic survey was conducted to determine its impact on the community in the region. Analysis of observed data obtained from questionnaires resulted in the creation of 153 intensity data points. Their distribution showed high intensity values close to the earthquake source area. However, the investigation highlighted a number of anomalies, such as the higher than expected intensity values observed far from the event epicentre. It could be that these anomalies are caused by site conditions, for example, amplification of ground motion due to thick soil layers.

Matte tapping is one of the most critical operations of a matte smelter. Every smelter has developed particular matte tapping practices and tap-hole repair strategies that are often based on the experience of the smelter personnel. As a result, very little information has been published on these critical topics. This paper aims at providing the information gathered from a survey conducted in the PGM and Ni industries on matte tapping practices and tap-hole maintenance strategies for different PGM-Ni matte smelting operations.

"In low-carbon energy-efficient basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steelmaking processes, limestone partly or completely replaces the active lime. The effects of limestone calcination temperature (1200–1500°C) and time (5–15 minutes) on lime reactivity and CaO grain size were investigated. The reactivity was evaluated by titration with hydrochloric acid, and the CaO grain size was analysed using scanning electron microscopy. The results revealed that for calcination temperatures higher than 1300°C, the reactivity reached a maximum and then decreased . The higher the temperature, the earlier the peak of reactivity appears. The CaO grains grow with increasing temperature and time, which leads to the decrease of reactivity. Notably, the effects of temperature on CaO grain size and reactivity are more marked than that of time. To obtain active lime calcined at ultra-high temperature by flash heating, the calcination conditions should be 1300–1400°C for 10–15 minutes, or 1400–1500°C for 8–10 minutes. IntroductionLime is one of the most important slag-making materials for dephosphorization and desulphurization in the basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steelmaking process. The reactivity of lime is a measure of its capability to take part in slag-making. Lime having a reactivity of more than 300.0 mL (4 N HCl), determined by hydrochloric acid titration is generally referred to as active lime (Rusjan et al., 2007; Zeman, 2008). At present, the active lime used for BOF processes comes primarily from a kiln or shaft kiln, where limestone is preheated at 700– 900°C, and then calcined at 1050–1200°C (Drenhaus et al., 2010; Oates, 2007)."

Eutectic freeze crystallisation is a novel separation technique that can be applied to treat brine solutions such as reverse osmosis retentates, which are often a mixture of different inorganic salts. The treatment of calcium sulphate-rich brine solutions through eutectic freeze crystallisation has resulted in gypsum scale formation on the walls of the crystallisers and ancillary equipment. In order to prevent gypsum scaling on equipment surfaces, it is essential to understand the mechanism of gypsum scaling on cold surfaces. This paper focused on the interaction between gypsum crystallisation in the bulk solution and scaling on the crystalliser walls in the presence of gypsum seeds. A cooled, U-shaped stainless-steel tube suspended in the saturated solution was employed as the scaling surface. Preliminary results showed that the scale layer was predominantly composed of needle-type and hexagonal prismatic crystals. The rate of scale deposition was highest during the first 24 hours, thereafter it decreased. A thin scale layer was observed to have coated the tube within the first hour of the experiment. Seeding, using reagent grade gypsum crystals, was effective in reducing scale layer formation through providing a surface for growth. The highest scale reduction, 81%, was realised at a seed loading of 0.50 g/L. At a high seed loading of 4.01 g/L, the seed material adhered to the tube.
